This butterfly flutters among a vibrant rainbow of other LGBT butterflies, each representing different identities within the queer community.

i do love a good bit of haunting the narrative as horror but i also love it when the haunting is a source of comfort, a way of keeping your memories of the dead alive. animals or plants that call to mind someone you lost, articles of clothing or accessories that belonged to the deceased being worn by their loved ones (and subtle hints at the context of their relationship - a ring on a chain for lovers parted, a necklace or handmade bracelet for friends, a distinctive blade or engraved armor plating for brothers in arms, etc.), a treasured keepsake or beloved pet passed down for safekeeping, children who remind you so much of their parents. i am not immune to grief expressed through tokens of remembrance and love.

➵ BOKUTO KOUTAROU
summary : From fated bike accident to shaving in your shared bathroom. tags : domestic fluff, mention of blood (nothing dramatic, I promise!) a/n : this has been a fic that I once wanted to post but my idiotic ass accidentally deleted it months ago, and I really did not have the enegry to rewrite it until now. also. Bokuto's skin is as soft as a baby's bottom.
Everyone has scars that ornament their skin; small ones, big ones, some of them are nastier than others, some of them might carry dark memories with them while others hide unknown stories behind themselves. Bokuto is not an exception.
The light stretchmarks along his inner thighs and the outer edge of his chest, the small light line on his thumb that's still healing and fading after he had accidentally cut himself while pealing potatoes last week. Don't get me even started on his knees, littered with multiple teeny tiny scars. The latter ones being small childhood keepsakes, every single of them a consequence of his naive curiosity and numerous escapades.
However, there is this one scar that's so small, barely noticeable yet it carries so much importance to the athlete. It's right underneath his chin, barely an inch long, but every time he looks in the mirror, especially when he shaves, he can't help but smile at the sight of the little token of remembrance.
"Shit, shit, shit! Coach Takeyuki's going to kill us." Bokuto breathlessly groaned, his hair being pushed back by the wind as he tried to pedal as fast as possible without hitting any obstacles (people. to be exact).
"Bokuto-san, you are going to kill us." Akaashi corrected, tightening his grip on the rear seat on which he was sitting on, rethinking all his recent life decisions that had led him to this exact situation; praying that his senpai would slow down at least a tiny bit on the next turn.
Thanks to Bokuto's suddenly not-functioning alarm, and sisters who had taken over the bathroom, the second year had gotten out of his house at least twenty minutes later than usual. And of course, Akaashi, being the ever so loyal and reliable kohai, had been waiting the entire time for his friend.
So when the two of them had realized that they'd be way too late for their volleyball practice, Bokuto had the amazing idea to simply take his bike.
And so here the they were, one driving like a mad man while the other one prayed they would not get in trouble. But you know how they say; if it’s meant to be it will be. And in this case, not even prayers were able to stop what was about to happen.
The sound of an all too sweet laugh suddenly caught Bokuto’s attention, followed by a shock of (h/c) hair until he dashed past you, eyes meeting for merely few seconds. Though, it was definitely more than enough for him to tell that you were pretty, gorgeous even. Your hair looked so soft and silky, eyes so beautiful he swore if they’d be the only thing he could stare at, he'd do it.
Your expression was also cute. The way your forehead wrinkled slightly with your furrowed eyebrows before your eyes shut open… oh, were you shouting something? Were you shouting at him? Shit, did he already mess up?! -
"Watch out!"
And when your voice finally pulled him out of his day dream, Bokuto realized that Akaashi was also being quite loud, which was not an all too usual occurrence. As he finally focused his gaze on the road ahead of him, he realized that, in fact, there was no road anymore. It was long gone and replaced by the all too well known walls that surrounded Fukurodani High.
In a matter of seconds, they crashed against the grey brick-wall, the bike and both its passengers flying to the ground. Akaashi groaned as he slowly got up while rubbing his aching rear, his white training jacket stained with mud and dirt.
Bokuto, on the other hand, had accepted the possibility that he had probably died because the way you crouched in front of him, holding a napkin against his bleeding chin, it could only mean that his soul had arisen to paradise and that you were an angel. That could be the only possible explanation, right?
"Are you okay? Feeling nauseous or dizzy?" you asked worriedly, the cloth in your hand slowly but surely getting soaked with his blood. "We should get him to the infirmary." It was only then that you realized that the raven haired boy who had also been involved in this accident, was your classmate.
"Akaashi-kun! Did you get hurt?"
After he had reassured you that he was fine besides the few scratches, you helped Akaashi heave his friend up (who was anything but lightweight).
Bokuto remembers your gentle eyes, and the worried glimmer in them as if it were yesterday. How your expression turned into one of confusion when he asked you if you'd like to swing by during their volleyball practice as soon as the school nurse had patched him up.
"G'morning." you yawn as you step inside the bathroom, tiredly rubbing the sleep out of your eyes, and interrupting your boyfriend's little nostalgic moment. "Morning, pretty. Did ya sleep well?"
You hum contently at the short peck against your cheek, and somehow it's only then that you notice Bokuto's black little toilet bag sitting on the countertop, his razor and shaving cream ready to be used. The sleep instantly leaves your body as you gasp enthusiastically and perch yourself on the countertop, Bokuto eyeing you with the same warmth in his gaze. Watching you grab the cream and ushering him to get closer with the same eagerness of a seven year old who's about to do her favorite doll's hair.
"Alright, alright!" his shoulders shake as he chuckles at your antics. You tug at his arms until he's settled between your legs, his hands finding purchase on your thighs, thumbs tenderly rubbing shapes along your skin while you start applying the white foamy substance along his jaws. A squeak sounds through the tiled room once he gives your thighs a tickling squeeze, your whiney and drawn out "Kou!" only spreading his grin further.
"You have to admit, 'm pretty good at this." you speak pridefully, gliding the razor along his skin with gentle and careful strokes with one hand while the other's nestled beneath his chin, guiding his head the way you want it.
"I don't think there's anything you're not good at." Bokuto claims, his smug and still with shaving cream stained face getting too close to your own for your liking. "Beside parallel parking maybe."
"Really funny. Baby, wait. No! You still have some-"
Yet in a blink of an eye, his hand is resting on your nape, his lips doing their work an planting pecks all over your cheeks as well as bits of the shaving cream. You've accepted fate, enduring his sweet yet messy kisses, and your brows scrunching in disgust at the bitter taste of chemicals when the last kiss lands on your lips.
"Happy now?" you chide falsely annoyed, yanking the towel from the towel rail, and wiping your face. "You could've waited until I was done!"
"Nope." Bokuto shakes his head lightly, the self-sufficient grin on his face seeming not wanting to leave for today, as he rests his forehead against yours. You're about to shove him off you. That's until you hear him say, "You know I can't wait when it comes to you."

FFXIV Write 2023 Day 6: Ring
“What is all that?” Zero asked as Aeryn set a box on the table. Y’shtola looked up from her own work at Aeryn’s desk, a brow raised.
“A box of my mother’s things,” Aeryn said. “My sister had it brought from Davarresh, since I’m staying in the city…pretty much indefinitely, when in Thavnair. It’s more convenient.”
“Your mother does not need these things?”
Aeryn paused. “My mother died due to an illness several years ago.”
“...Oh.” Zero thought for a moment. “I am sorry.”
Aeryn smiled. “Thank you. It’s all right; I never explained.” She frowned at a small jewelry box among the keepsakes. She picked it up and opened it, showing a gold band with the tiniest of colored gem chips in it, connected by etching to make them look like flowers on a looping vine.
Y’shtola came over to the table, taking a break. “What is that? It looks like—”
“Her wedding ring,” Aeryn said.
—
It was a sunny day, and a good day; Mama was sitting with her on the patio, taking in the fresh warm air. They talked about everything and nothing, simple pleasant conversation; Aeryn’s studies, family gossip, speculation about the trade caravan currently wending its way through Vanaspati and how they missed being on it. Eventually it turned to older memories, things Aeryn could barely remember as Mama told stories of far-away Coerthas and Aeryn’s first father.
“We have so few keepsakes of that time,” Mama sighed. “Everything was lost in the fire, the dragon’s breath was so fierce.” She twisted the ring on her own finger, the light catching the miniscule gem chips. It was looser than it should have been; her hands were thin these days.
Aeryn shrugged, unconcerned. It bothered Zaine and Mama far more than her; she was content to hear their stories. Then again, she carried in a pocket the little worn toy soldier Zaine had left with her, before he went off to Eorzea. Without her.
Mama thought for a moment, then pulled the wedding ring off her hand, holding it out to Aeryn. “Here; I want you to have this. As a keepsake.”
Aeryn’s brow furrowed. “But Mama—”
“The fires that will consume my body won’t be so hot as a dragon’s,” she said quietly. “A remembrance, of what your father and I had, once upon a time.”
Aeryn reluctantly took the band, holding it in her hand. Such a simple thing, still warm to the touch. She nodded, but did not put it on.
Later, after Mama had passed and her ashes interred, Aeryn put the ring in a little jewelry box in her room, left open to show it off and letting the light catch the tiny gems. There were sometimes days she would pick the wedding band up, running her thumb over the design and recalling stories, before putting it away again.
When deciding what few items to take with her to Eorzea, the toy soldier had remained in her pocket, but the ring she did not want to risk being lost or stolen, and so left on the shelf of more recent keepsakes her mother had left her, in her childhood bedroom.
—
“Aeryn,” Y’shtola’s voice, sounding strained, cut through. “Your Echo shared the memory,” she said.
Aeryn blinked, looking at Zero grimacing and Y’shtola holding her own head. “I’m sorry. Still getting used to how that works.” Venat’s brief lessons and learning how to further use her Echo had opened up her still often involuntary abilities. Would that the lessons had included how to make the Echo behave itself, given how sensitive hers was to akasa.
“You’re ambivalent about the ring, even now,” Zero noted.
The Echo of Alberic’s memory rose in her mind, of what her father had truly been. “It’s complicated,” Aeryn said.
She put the ring back in the box. “Its mate was lost to dragonfire when my first father died; maybe someday I’ll figure out what to do with this lonely little band. For now, it’s a reminder of a few old stories, and happy times.”
Times when she had seen it glinting on Mama’s hand, tucking her own hair behind her ears, or how it sparkled near Aeryn’s eyes when her mother wiped her face as a child. Mama had worn it even after marrying Papa and while wearing his bracelet, to “keep both my loves close, especially for my children’s sake.”
Aeryn’s memories of Corran Striker were dim, and mostly belonged to other people—in one unfortunate case, literally. She did not want to associate the ring with him, when everything about it reminded her of her mother.
“First father?” Zero asked.
“Guess it’s time to explain family structures,” Aeryn said. “You somewhat recall your own mother, but the rest seems to be a bit confusing, right?” At Zero’s nod, Aeryn smiled. “I can speak to Hyurs, and Y’shtola’s here to explain Miqo’te; we can make a lesson of it.”
“Indeed,” Y’shtola said quietly, giving Aeryn a sympathetic look.
Aeryn put the open jewelry box on a shelf, to let the lamp and sunlight occasionally catch on the tiny gems, where she could see it and sometimes take it out and run her thumb over the design, and think about her Mama’s love and stories.

Hair wreath. Hairwork jewelry grew out of the desire to keep a remembrance of a loved one who had died, as it was common practice to clip a lock of a loved one’s hair as a keepsake.
In 1850 Godey’s Lady’s Book introduced the craft of hairwork to American women, and the creation of hairwork brooches, wreaths, bracelets, and other items became a popular pastime; though not always used as a memorial. source

remembrance
for @sapphicmarauding july 19 prompt: nostalgia
pairing: emmalily / wc: 241
Summer belongs in the past, Emma has decided. All of the smiles and laughter and happiness are things of a bygone era, not meant to be experienced ever again.
She has a box in the back of her closet, filled with photos and keepsakes; photographs of Lily on the beach, a seashell she found on the sand and gave to Emma, a bunch of guitar picks that she doesn't use anymore because she sold her guitar during a bad week when she couldn't stand to look at it anymore. Lily had put stickers on it, left her mark on it, so it didn't belong solely to Emma anymore but to the both of them, and she had wanted it gone.
Now, about a month later, she wants it back.
It's been two years and everytime july comes around she sinks into a sea of memories, waves of nostalgia crashing against her. Lily when they first met in the summer between first and second year, Lily when they first kissed in the summer between fifth and sixth, Lily when they joined a war the summer after their seventh year and Lily in the next summer when they last spoke to each other.
Summer belongs to Lily, in Emma's mind. And Lily isn't here anymore, isn't hers anymore.
So once a year she goes into hiding, leaves her brother in charge of her shop, and spends three months remembering all that she's lost.

PF2e Homebrew Deity: The Rememberer
Alright. This started because of the Grave Robber background in PF2e, because I had this idea for a grave robber character who is fine with stealing wealth or even bodies, because the dead don’t need those anymore, but has a habit …
If something is obviously a keepsake, a memory of love or loss, they’ll take that and bring it to a shrine rather than selling it or destroying it. As their … their code, their gesture towards morality, but also their genuine personal belief about what’s important. They will steal every goddamn coin in your grave and sell your body for parts, because you’re dead and you don’t need them anymore, but they’ll carefully carry out your engraved ring or cheap wooden locket or braid of your child’s hair and put them somewhere holy, put them somewhere safe. The memory, the echo of love and loss, is the sacred part, everything else is just materials wasted on people who aren’t using them anymore.
And with that in mind … I wanted a deity to bring those keepsakes to. A specific shrine for a specific god for this grave robber to leave their sort-of-apologetic offerings in.
A deity for remembrance, for the preservation of memory, a deity who values names and cheap lockets and ancient love letters, and all the little minutiae of lost lives that those in the aftermath cling to. A deity … who will remember those who had none of that, nothing to leave and no one to leave it to, who will remember you, will promise to remember you, even if you die alone and unmourned. And maybe a deity who knows, quite exactly, what that feels like. Thus:
THE REMEMBERER
Neutral Deity of Remembrance
Realm: Labyrinth of Memory
Worshippers: Those in mourning, those who counsel the mourners, as well as some historians, archivists and occasionally archaeologists
Temples: Shrines of Memory, as well as some archives, libraries and museums
Symbol: Votive Candle
Once, the nameless deity known as The Rememberer was a mortal being, aeons ago, in the earliest days of creation. That mortal being died. Alone, forgotten, with no one to mourn and nothing to mark their passing. No sign remaining that they had ever walked the world. And that, more than anything else, was their grief, the desperate wound in their soul. So deep was that grief that it moved their soul even beyond death. First a spirit and then, slowly, a deity, emerged from that grief. Nameless, for their name had been forgotten, but not motiveless. They swore that no other would endure what they had endured. They would remember, and mourn, for all who passed beneath their aegis, until time ran dry and the world fell silent. This is their promise, and the promise of those who follow them. To remember your name. To help preserve your letters, or the braid of your hair, or the locket you made for someone you loved. To keep echoes of your passing, and help the world remember that once you existed. And, too, to help those who have lost you. To aid in mourning, in grief, in the knowledge of loss. All of these are the promise and preserve of the Rememberer.
Edicts: Preserve items of emotional significance, help others to grieve and mourn, mourn and remember those you encounter who die unremarked
Anathema: Destroy keepsakes or memorials, offer cruelty in response to grief
Follower Alignments: Any
DEVOTEE BENEFITS
Divine Ability: Intelligence or Wisdom
Divine Font: Heal
Divine Skill: Occultism
Favoured Weapon: Dagger
Domains: Knowledge, Repose, Sorrow, Vigil
Cleric Spells: 1st Object Reading, 2nd Empathic Link, 4th Morass of Ages
(For DnD 5e, I think the Knowledge and Peace domains will work. Possibly Twilight and/or Grave, but they’re a bit more of a stretch. This is memory, not death, and as much as I adore the Twilight domain, the abilities don’t really gel with the Rememberer)

I love the cut of my jib, always have. It's photogenic and people had been telling me that I'm beautiful all my life.
I used to scratch my head at people who asked for their photos to be deleted, or refused to pose for a photo in the first place. What was their problem? Didn't they want memories?
Used to...until I gained a shit ton of weight. Aquiring both a huge bosom and a protruding stomach. I'm short (160 cm on a good day). Which means that whenever I sit down, my boobs and my stomach melt together, making me look like a shapeless blob.
I hate it so much. For a moment there I would avoid having my pictures taken while sitting down. Until my 40th birthday came, which I spent with dear friends, sitting a lot and drinking and eating and being merry like a hobbit.
I forced myself to save some of those *unflattering* pictures. After looking at them for the umpteenth time, I do not care about my torso being a tub of lard anymore. Those are memories that I've made - keepsakes of a day when I was radiating with happiness. I'm not denying myself this remembrance of joy.
In 20 years I'll be 60 and looking at those photos of a smiling 40-yo woman I won't mind the sagginess, the unruly fat. I'll see someone who was still young - and enjoying herself to the fullest.
For those who needed to hear it today
