Twisted Wonderland Birthdates/Birthyears, In Order.

A comprehensive list of each TWST character’s exact birthdate, in order, down to the year + their ages. This will be going off of Twisted Wonderland’s release date, (2020), and not the current year (2023 at the time of writing). Contains chapter 7 spoilers.

- I’m aware that the Japanese school year starts in April instead of September, but for some reason my brain refused to process this so I ended up doing these based around the school year cut-off being September. I decided to post it anyway, since I’m pretty sure most of it’s still accurate, though I may do a Japanese version at some point!

Silver – Unknown, 1621. Chosen date is May 15th, 2003. (299 - 300 Years Old, mentally 16 - 18).

~Ortho’s age is anonymous, so I had to do some speculations and maths here. I’m going to assume that R!Ortho was 8 years old at the date of his death, and that Idia constructed O!Ortho when he was around 10. This would give their parents plenty of time to start caring about Robortho before the pair left for Night Raven. I’m going to assume that O!Ortho is either 3 years old with the mental state of an 11 year old, or 3 years old with the mental state of a 16 year old (since he joined the first years, albeit as a special exception). Personally I’m leaning more towards the former.

~If Lilia was 300 years old during the war and Silver was a baby at the time (seemingly 0 - 1 years old) then that would mean that his birthyear falls somewhere between 1620 - 1622, most likely 1621. Lilia also states that the day he found Silver was the day that he decided for Silver's birthday, meaning that the odds of May 15th being his real birthday are 1/365. During Silver's identity crisis dream we see what he looked like on the day that Lilia found him, which we've established was May 15th, and he looks to be roughly 6 months old.

It's possible that Lilia thought of this and decided to consider this Silver's 1st birthday, but if that were the case, there's a good 50% chance that Silver has actually been awake for 16 years of his life, which would actually be very clever since Aurora was 16. In the reverse, if Lilia decided to treat the day he found Silver as the day he was born, then there's a 50% chance that Silver is actually 18. Basically what I'm saying is I haven't got a fucking clue-)

We don’t know the whole story

Although Harry and Taylor have never said when they met or started dating, often assumed to have met At the March 2012 Kids Choice Awards, because it was the first time we saw them together. 2 weeks after the awards Justin Bieber said a superstar liked Harry, but didn't name Taylor or say they met at the awards. I have a post about the Kids Choice awards/IKYWT Secret message and Harry's Jacket here.

A source close to Taylor later said to Vanity Fair he had chased her for a year, before the started dating, which was also before he kissed Emily Ostily on the 21 April 2012 and Taylor posted about infidelities to Instagram on 23 April 2012 (which doesn't make sense if they met 24 days earlier).

That would indicate they had met by March 2011. Which is likely as they were in the same city and locations throughout 2011. In 2014 Taylor told Rolling Stone:

"People think they know the whole narrative of my life, I think maybe that line is there to remind people that there are really big things they don’t know about."

As Taylor said to Time Magazine in 2023 and Harry said to Howard Stern in 2019 it's not in their interests for a new relationship to be public before they are solid.  In Harry's words 'it's never benefited me' for a relationship to be public. In 2011 people were sent death threats for having dinner with him. It's no wonder they were hidden for most of that time.  Special thanks to @cntfightmydemonsthyknowhowtoswim for help with this. 31 January - Fearless won AOY & CA Grammy

27 March - Harry styles auditions for xfactor

23 July - One direction formed on X factor.

23 October - Taylor first seen with Jake at snl taping, sung monologue song

25 October - Speak Now released.

12 December - X factor semi final, 1D third, Syco signed One Direction for £2 million, each boy was only paid an initial £8,000. Maybe signed on the 13th.

13 December - Jake not at Taylor’s birthday, in January announce broke up in December. It was 7 weeks.

2011

4 January - Taylor seen in LA on the 5th January then not again for a month.

25-30 January 1D fly to Los Angeles. The Sun reported they were in US meeting writers and producers to start recording. It's likely they first met here.

5 February - Taylor seen for first time in a month, in LA, wearing the Key necklace in LA. It later appeared in the I knew you were trouble music video (4:45) and was sold as merchandise, there was a key for Fearless too, but it stopped after this.

19 February - 9 April; X-Factor live tour. TS tour break 20 & 21, 20th was X Factor O2 show.

1 March - Harry left Manchester hotel and arrived Sheffield

3 March - Harry pokemon white/black

7, 9 March - Harry Liverpool

10, 11, 12, 13 March - Harry in Manchester

17 - 30 March - Speak Now in Europe. Taylor wrote ATW

15 March - one direction Birmingham show, fans see boys leaving on the 16th then have 4 day weekend where he is not seen.

16 March - Taylor's Lover Journal talks about Paris, seeing castles, 4th grade and career anxiety over the Mean video. She talks about visiting having visited Neuschwanstein Castle that later appears in Bejewelled MV.

16 - 19 march Taylor seen in Paris

17 March - Taylor plays speak now in Paris at Zénith de Paris, in park bordered by Canal Saint-Denis, (technically) outside Saint-Denis.  Holy ground's secret message is “when you came to the show in SD” later the film clips for Begin Again, EHC, Falling and LOT tour images all reference canals in Paris. Taylor plays Soul Sister / Fearless mash-up for the first time that show. Soul Sister was Harry's first X-Factor Audition song. She plays the mash-up on/off for the rest of the tour and on the DVD.

21 March - Taylor in London Recording Studio wearing a rose dress key from IKYWT video. Taylor wore a Rose ring and Rose Dress the day before too.

22 March - Taylor shopping at Portobello Market and photographed at Alice in Wonderland themed store (Wonderland)

23 March - a Wednesday, Taylor wore white dress (Begin again cover) in London, Harry also in London before Nottingham show. Vanity Fair article later says they'd known each other for a year by March 2012. Harry return to hotel after performing at O2

6-12 June - 1D in Sweden, likely record What makes you Beautiful.

13-20 June - 1D has a break, Harry unseen, not active on social and reappears in LA on the 20th. Taylor also free 13 - 16 other than the 15th:

15 June - Taylor arm lyrics "“A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry, our rights, our wrongs.” – The Temper Trap, Sweet Disposition. Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Exactly one year later Harry got the lyrics from this song tattoo'ed.

17 June - Lover Journal Taylor wrote in her journal on way to Nashville “Something so unexpected and amazing happened recently... I’ve become blissfully happy with my life. Like, actually grateful for every second of the day. I've notice this onset for a while, but it's really hit me in the last week and especially since I wrote those 2 new songs. I'm happy I get to meet so many people on the road who make me feel like my music really matters to them.” One song may be State of Grace.

14 September - asked who was most confident with girls LT says "Definitely without a question say Harry, like Harry, no matter how long is known her, or who she is he will go up to her, like if it's a celebrity, like at the GQ Awards, [Niall adds "Like Pixie Lott] he will go up and sing their song and dance. It's like 100% Harold Styles." Harry then changes the conversation to silly names, Louis brings up GQ again and Harry mouths "Stop going' on about it" (9:50).

16 September - 1D Harper Collins London

18 September - Harry at G.A.Y. perform WMYB

21 September - Harry at GQ end of FW party

18 - 30 September - 1D in New York, filmed Gotta be You in Lake Placid NY 29 and SUNY 29 September. Speak now break 18, 21 - 23 September, shows other days. The film clip included scenes on a train, the SBT message is "when you were on the train", she wrote it sometime on a bus. Speak Now dates in Colorado, Utah and Georgia. However, 28 September is possibly an anniversary and in the Four hang out (31-33) Harry said gotta be you was his favourite 1D song of all, which Niall clapped and said “well done Taylor your boyfriends back”. Harry met Emily Ostilly.

30 September - 1D at Heathrow

4 October - At Bring 1D to me Munich, when asked about ‘Celebrity Dreamgirls’ Louis says "Celebrity dreamgirls um,  yeah like there's a lot of people I suppose that we think is HOT, like... Harry?" the look Zayn, Niall and Liam's expressions, and Louis this is not flirting, he is 'ribbing' Harry for making out with a famous person and sharing his secrets. Harry says his crush is Emma Watson, who the interviewer says has a crush on him,  H blushes and, not willing to let it go, Louis points out a love bite. Arm Lyrics “It’s easy saying nothing when there’s nothing to say” - KT Tunstall, “Fade Like A Shadow”

5 October - Taylor tweets “Leaving Little Rock, headed to New Orleans. Writing a song on a moving bus” in the album video (8:20) Taylor said she wrote sad beautiful tragic on a bus.

17 October - Harry goes to Ed Sheeran concert with Louis at Eleanor's university then not seen till rehearsals 2 weeks later.

19 October - Harry did a 10 min phone interview alone with Grimmy and said he was passing through Birmingham. There are voices in the background at the end.

20 October - Taylor played San Diego. Harry was not seen. He posted "Finally set the correct time on my Microwave..I feel like a new man." on Twitter.

24 October- Harry is coughing in an interview and looks and sounds unwell. It had snowed at the beach in Liverpool which is west.

✹ … ⥁ A MONTH IN LOOP NEWS: SEPTEMBER

Opening up the month with a much anticipated announcement in a not so ideal setting, New Wave Music saw itself corned to confirm LOOPiN's upcoming album after leaking of the comeback logo, tracklist and promotion schedule took place on September 11th.

'Internet War', the group's 4th full album according to the leaked content, is a half hyperpop inspired, half mellow PC pop devoted project set to introduce a new batch of units to the group - two trios and two duos, as seen on their pre-debut era. Aside from dual title tracks 'Jump' and 'Tell Me What To Do', the album will have 12 b-side tracks.

New Wave Music took to social media on the 12th to confirm the content as belonging to LOOPiN, and attaching an official date to the release: October 10th. Curiously enough, no commentary on legal consequences against the prossecutors of the information early released have been found on the statement, fueling rumors that the leak might have come from staff or even the members themselves in some unespected, unconventional form of marketing or preassure to actually release music - something LOOPiN hadn't done since April.

While the upcoming fictional survival show 'Show Me The One' is taking its time to unravel the official lineup on social media, a varieted amount of entertainment companies have already announced their compeating trainees - divited on the show on teams of multiples of 3s. New Wave Music made no different: on September 16th, the company shared a news outlet confirming trainees Dahyung (25), Chaeun (23) and Furumi (22) of Team RIIDEWAVEE as not only their 'Show Me The One' representatives, but also a third of the lineup of their future girl group, set to debut on the first semester of 2024.

While there's clear rumors of who two out of the three trainees might be - Dahyung is highly especulated to be former MIDNESTRA member Kim Dahyung, while Furumi can't be anyone else but Fukunaga Furumi, Nogizaka46 graduate and the younger sister of LOOPiN's Haruki -, Chaeun is still an unknown name.

We wish the girls good luck on the show and a successful debut!

On September 22th, Choi Sangwon, 41, was found and reported dead in a motel room in rural area Damyang by three witnesses - later confirmed as Idols by a minor south korean tabloid with no real evidence to back it, but a name prestigious enough for it to be taken as truth right away. Any further information on the identity of the alleged celebrities has yet to surface.

Sangwon, who had been a well known manager for multitple K-Pop acts such as 3rd gen leader boy group INPEAK (from 2011 to 2014), one hit wonder girl group Sweet-X (2015), LOOPiN (2016 to 2022) and more recently, rising girl group FairLand (2022). Taking the role of marketing adviser and trainee evaluator in the majority of the companies he worked for, he had a reputation as a creator of opportunities and great judge of star power.

Police confirmed the cause of death as suicide a day later.

Sangwon's passing seemed to put the final nail in the coffin for the future of Greater Sound Entertainment's FairLand.

Coming from a small company and making their debut in August 2021, FairLand finally gained momentun in February 2023 with the release of their third single, 'Rose Blossom', which gained popularity amoung korean netizens and charted for two entire months near the top 10 and 20 of various music platforms. However, the sixteth was placed on complete hiatus shortly after the end of 'Rose Blossom' promotions, with leader Sangah and maknae Ichiko being completly gone for the group's Youtube and Weverse content streamed from August onwards.

Greater Sound's official note on the disbandment, released on September 25th and personally signed off by CEO Lim Gahyun, reads as follows: "Hello, this is Greater Sound Entertainment's Lim Gahyun. It's with a heavy hearth that we come to you with the announcement of the end of FairLand. I want to make this an opportunity to personally thank the support that we have received in recent years from the general public and Landies. To the members, I'm sorry, and I love you. I hope all of you always, always knows that as truth. Please, keep showing support on the bright journeys of SANGAH, NAHYEON, SOOAH, MINJI, JAZZ and ICHIKO, which are far from over. We hope we all get to shine more brightly and safely from now on."

Not a single member has decided to stay under Greater Sound - which is rummored to terminate all operations on the following months.

LOOPiN member Haruki, who had been set to appear at Milan Fashion Week on the 26th as a guest of Vianfino, taking active duty as one of the ficitonal brand's declared muses and first global ambassador, took fans and media by surprise by not appearing in Italy.

Hours after the Vianfino runway started with Haruki's front row seat left empty, New Wave Music released a statment on the commotion, declaring that from now on, "all upcoming activities which will not involve or enrich 'Internet War' promotions directly, that taking in consideration not only Haruki's current public schedule, but of all the members of the group, have been indeterminantly cancelled' - which as far as we know of includes a Hanjae photoshoot for Esquire Korea alongside the cast of his newest drama series, J.J and Haegon's appearence on a late October episode of Return Of Superman, and a special fansign event for Gyujin's birthday on October 17th.

To quote the company's official note: "All the LOOPiN members have decided to prioritize their walk into a new era as a team. We ask the public's understanding and the respect of this personal choice taken by the group as a whole."

As expected, the public hasn't been convinced by New Wave Music's vague reasoning, with the majority of fans online suspecting some sort of punishment or ban being placed on the LOOPiN members - a theory highly supported by the quiet and unusual state of the members personal Instagram and Tiktok pages, all colecively not updated since the 24th.

Okay, let's talk about this

Sam Claflin + supporting Johnny Depp.

I'm using this screenshot purely as an example, not to attack the poster. It's the only screenshot I have re this topic, I've had it saved since April 2023. Last I checked, this account has been suspended from Twitter. (ETA it has now been re-instated.)

I'm not here to fight Sam's battles or argue; if you're determined to cancel Sam, don't let me stop you. If you, however, would like to know more on Sam's background and why he may have supported Johnny--read on.

What the above screenshot tells us is that Sam liked, and commented on, Depp's Instagram post celebrating the win of his defamation trial. Some time later, Sam deleted his comment, unliked the post and unfollowed Depp. (I didn't even know about all that as I'm not that deep into Instagram, but I can see Sam doesn't follow Depp and there is no like from him on that post. Anyway, you can check for yourselves.) I think there are worse crimes than liking a social media post and as Sam deleted the comment and unfollowed Johnny, he clearly realised his mistake. But this is not about that.

Sam and Johnny Depp

Sam started his career in 2010 in the mini series Pillars of the Earth. He had a couple more TV jobs, until he landed his first big movie role, which was Philip in Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides (the 4th instalment of the franchise). For Sam, this would have meant a lot--more than a lot. Sam comes from a normal background--by which I mean his parents are regular people and not in entertainment. His father makes dad jokes on social media. (His younger brother Joe is also an actor, but he's very low-key.) Like I keep saying, Sam's just a boy from Norwich, essentially the exact opposite of a nepo baby. He didn't even plan to become an actor in his childhood, his dream was to become a professional football (soccer) player. It was only after suffering ankle injuries that he switched to acting. What I'm saying is, for Sam to get a role next to a star of Johnny Depp's calibre would have been HUGE.

Check out this snippet of an interview with Joe Wicks (dated Spring 2021), where he talks about how nervous he was on the set:

No doubt he was starstruck about working with Depp. A quote from Sam's IMDb page: "Johnny Depp gave me the best advice. He said, 'Keep your feet on the ground. Stay grounded. Remember where you came from.'" It's something that must have resonated with Sam. Sure, Depp didn't come up with it, it is, after all, a good old common sense advice--but that doesn't matter, bc you always remember the person who gave you the good advice, even if it was not something they invented themselves.

Timeline-wise, POTC4 was released in 2011, which means it was probably filmed the previous year. So before Depp got into a relationship with Amber Heard.

Sam has, as you know, forged a respectable acting career for himself, but that POTC experience is something he would never forget. More than a decade later, he still goes back to it. And why not--you don't just let go of your first blockbuster that easily.

I seriously, SERIOUSLY, doubt Sam watched any of that notorious trial. He was filming Daisy Jones and The Six at that time and at least for a portion of the time he had his kids with him and homeschooled them.

Sam and Women

Sam has worked with female directors, as well as doing female-centric projects, or projects featuring strong female characters. (Whatever your opinion on how DJATS diverged from the book in this regard, he can hardly be blamed for it. Ask yourself instead why Reese Witherspoon, with her female character centred book club, let the male writers get away with what they did.)

And let's not forget that Sam is also, like Depp, divorced. Unlike the beloved pirate star, he has not a bad word to say about his ex-wife, Laura Haddock. "We're still a family." Laura is also an actress, you may know her from the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

Recently, Sophie Turner had to deal with being smeared in the media by her (soon-to-be)ex-husband. No such behaviour from Sam. Of course, you can argue that Sam's conduct in this matter should not be praised, bc it should be the default. Probably, I'm just pointing it out as it's relevant to the topic.

Sam and being down to earth

I always laugh about the fact that (nearly) all of Sam's interviews include the following 3 items: 1. Sam praising the people he works with, be it fellow actors or other crew, 2. Sam saying something self-deprecating and 3. Sam mentioning his kids, or the fact that he's a father. Read any of his interviews--or watch this, filmed by yours truly (sorry for the poor quality):

As I said above, Sam is from a regular family and started earning his own money from the age of 13. When he was at SXSW 2023, where they were served food, he cleared the dishes after himself [source].

Sam is not one of those big name Hollywood stars. I'm not sure he can even be called a Hollywood star. He could have been one, he could have been on the level of Marvel's Chrises, after playing Finnick in Hunger Games. But he chooses smaller, quieter projects. He maintains the just right level of fame that brings him enough money, while allowing him to keep his personal life private.

Sam being a dad:

Sam has also been open about struggling with his worth and his insecurity. I guess this circles back to Johnny Depp. When you don't know your true worth, you might believe certain people, who have been in the business for a long time, to be more than what they are. But I'm getting into some armchair psychology now, so let me end it here.

In conclusion, you could do worse than be a fan of Sam Claflin.

over the past couple of days i’ve seen some more theories concerning the h+o stunt, so i thought i would compile some of the information people have found and add some more detail, as well some of my own thoughts!

olivia + stunts

@/purplehazelwt on twitter found that olivia has a history doing pr stunts, especially where she is romantically linked to someone she’s doing a movie with.

exhibit a: olivia and her first husband announced their separation in early february 2011. on march 1st, 2011, she and ryan gosling were filmed on a “secret date” and numerous articles came out about them being a couple (link to some of these articles: here and here). they weren’t co-stars or working together on a movie, but ryan had an upcoming film called “crazy, stupid, love” that was released later in july 2011. olivia was also going to be in another upcoming film - more details in the next example.

exhibit b: olivia was in a movie called “in time” that was released in october 2011. justin timberlake was the male lead in the movie, and in april 2011 several articles came out about justin and olivia getting cozy in a nightclub, and of course speculation that they were a couple (link to some of these articles: here and here).

exhibit c: in june 2011, it was announced that olivia would be joining the cast of a movie called “the words”, in which bradley cooper is the male lead. in may 2011 (the month before), they were seen getting close and quite a few articles were released about them possibly being in a relationship (link to one of these articles: here).

olivia began dating her ex-fiancé, jason sudeikis, in november 2011, so she didn’t really get romantically linked to anyone for years, up until now. however, from the above examples, it shows that olivia has a history of doing pr stunts for projects she’s involved in, and that’s likely what’s happening right now with harry.

did olivia + jason really break up?

@/whosheisss on twitter raised the theory that olivia and jason sudeikis (her  ex-fiancé) didn’t break up. a quick history of their relationship: as i said before, they began dating in november 2011, then they got engaged in january 2013. they have two children together, and in november 2020 they announced that they had broken up earlier that year. here’s why their break up might not have been real:

olivia and jason’s split was announced in a people exclusive article (link: here) on november 13, 2020, where a source close to them told people magazine that olivia and jason had split earlier in 2020, but they were on good terms and were co-parenting well.

the source said they split in early 2020, so maybe around january to march. but in august, jason did an interview with access hollywood and said this (link: here):

and in august he also did an interview with et where he said olivia helped inspire his new show (link: here):

on september 9 and 16, jason and olivia were papped at a beach in malibu, where they were laughing, hugging, playing and looking like they were having a lot of fun (link to september 9 pictures: here)

in october, jason went on the drew barrymore show (link: here) and said this:

on november 16, olivia and jason were seen embracing and getting pretty close, 3 days after their split was announced. in the pictures, she was also still wearing her engagement ring (link to article: here):

on december 20, olivia and jason were seen sharing a “long and loving embrace” (as just jared puts it). olivia was also holding jason’s face into her hands and “staring deep into jason’s eyes” (again, just jared’s words and not mine) and essentially looking like they were still very close (link to article & more pictures: here):

and of course, olivia was seen still wearing her engagement ring in the recent pap pics with harry:

olivia was also seen going to jason’s house on january 4th (link: here).

obviously, pictures of olivia and jason meeting up and hugging don’t necessarily mean they’re still together, as the breakup article stated they were still on good terms. however, the way jason was talking about olivia in interviews and the fact that olivia still wears her engagement ring suggests they might not have broken up at all and their breakup is a publicity stunt.

recently, there have been articles about jason being heartbroken about harry and olivia and him being willing to repair things with olivia (link: here). and of course there was this anon:

it does seem very plausible that olivia and jason never broke up, but they announced that they did and coordinated this stunt with harry. if jason is going to start “fighting for the love of his life and his family” and he and olivia get back together, it would bring a lot of publicity to all parties involved (jason, olivia and harry), so it would be a win-win situation for everyone - theoretically, anyway.

the timing

as mentioned before, olivia and jason’s split was announced in november 2020, even though they had apparently split in early 2020 and were still acting like a couple before and after the announcement. the pap pics of harry and olivia are theorized to have been taken in november, as the wedding venue and the restaurants in santa barbara where they were seen have been closed for a while because of the pandemic. so, if the pap pictures were taken in november then released in january, and olivia and jason’s split was announced in november as well, it definitely looks like this is a planned publicity stunt and olivia and jason might not have broken up at all.

why they want publicity

so if all of this is an elaborate stunt to get harry, jason and olivia publicity, what is it for? olivia and harry have dwd of course, and since olivia is directing and acting in it, plus it’s got well-known celebrities like harry, florence pugh, chris pine, etc. in the cast, it makes sense her team would want to hype up this movie. besides just promoting dwd, harry is also nominated for 3 grammys this year. the ceremony was originally scheduled for january 31st but was pushed to march 14th recently. but since this stunt was likely thought of in november 2020, they wouldn’t have known that and assumed the ceremony would be in january. as for jason, he co-writes and stars in an apple tv+ show called “ted lasso”. the first season was released in august 2020 and apparently the production of the second season could be starting this month, so he’d want to promote his show too, especially since he’s the star.

this could also help distract people from the babygate situation, a theory that @/ONLYGOLDENN on twitter raised. basically, recently louis flew to la and people are speculating it might be because of briana’s court case, which supposedly will be happening on january 20th. people have also been theorizing that louis may get involved in the case and take a paternity test and babygate could be ending - in any case, things may be happening soon and this stunt with harry and olivia might be trying to distract people.

conclusion

Kpop/Cpop Obsessions Post, Ver 5.2

I’ve been long overdue making a new version of this post, and with some recent time with friends spent getting to know a bunch of new groups that I’d not been previously familiar with among 4th gen Kpop, it seems like a good time to finally make a new one.

EDIT 1 [2022/5/28]: I’ve not comeback to this for a while because I’ve been swamped in first year teaching, but I’m in a contemplative mood tonight, and it’s a long weekend, so I’m going through and adding/adjusting some things.

EDIT 2 [2023/2/13]: I’ve not come back to this for a while again (oops). Life sure is. I’m going to go through and add/adjust some things, and hopefully get this a little (a lot) more up to date.

The goal of this post is to go over which groups and solo artists I like a lot and will post about. Some of these artists go long stretches without doing much before cropping back up, so don’t be surprised if there’s not much from them on my blog for a while and then there is a sudden avalanche.

I’m going to try to add a favorite MV (and favorite song if my favorite song doesn’t have an MV) and bias(es) to show what makes me like the group a little more.

The rest is under a cut for length. (I am also always happy to chat about these groups, so feel free to shoot me an ask or a message about them!)

KPOP

I’m switching back to starting with Kpop for this iteration of the post because while it’s a newer love for me than Cpop, it’s also a much more accessible to me love than Cpop (despite speaking a reasonable amount of Mandarin and next to no Korean). I didn’t get into Kpop until around 2011 (in contrast to 1999 for Cpop), but man is it just a lot more present on things like YouTube and Spotify.

Boy Groups

This is going to be a mix of some old favorites and some new favorites, but I’ve been quite impressed with a lot of the 4th gen boy groups. I’m focusing on at least somewhat active groups in this post, but there are a lot of older groups that if they suddenly reemerged to activity I would be very excited for.

Seventeen:

My all time favorite group! Seventeen is on the short list of Kpop groups that I have seen in concert, and their Ode to You concert was my first Kpop concert. I also went to Be The Sun. I have liked every single song that they’ve ever released, and that is saying something. For me to put a group into the “I like them” category, I have to consistently like at least some of their songs. Even on some of my other favorite groups, there are songs here and there that I’m just kind of “eh?” about, but that’s not been the case for Seventeen. They just fall right into that sound that I like (basically, I’m beginning to suspect that my musical tastes are very very similar to Woozi’s). I love their performance aspect as well, their dances and choreography are amazing, and they are just a lot of fun to follow. I was a little bit concerned with the Pledis move to Hybe, but I think that Woozi’s distinctive sound that carries through the vast majority of their music is keeping them right in my tastes. Favorite Members: Junhui (Jun), Wonwoo, Jihoon (Woozi) Favorite MV/Song: “Shadow,” “Don’t Wanna Cry,” “Home,” “Rock With You” (but the list honestly goes on)

OnlyOneOf:

It’s been a while since I’ve fallen into a group as hard and as fast as I fell into liking OnlyOneOf, and in many ways they were a catalyst for me really starting to get into new groups again. I love that starting with “libidO” they have been telling queer stories in their music and MVs consistently and with commitment. I’ll be attending their concert in SF in April 2023, and we are going to be driving 15 hours each way for it (give or take). They’ve been through a lot as a group, and they have risen to even more amazing heights for me. I love love love their solo series, and just the way that they tell stories and their engagement and involvement in their own art. Favorite Members: Rie, Junji Favorite MV/Song: “libidO,” “cOy,” honestly a lot more

Enhypen:

This is a group that I have more than one weird connection to, and I’m really glad that I deeply enjoy their music because I would feel weird not loving them as a group. The weird connection that I’ll talk about publically is that I followed Sunghoon’s skating career. The first time that I watched him skate (granted via stream) was when he was still a novice level skater, and it’s weird in a good/I’m proud of him way to see him all grown up in his new career. If we talk, I might discuss the more important connection privately. I love their music and their concepts! Favorite Members: Jay, Sunoo, Jungwon Favorite Songs: “Blessed-Cursed,” “I Need The Light”

Oneus:

So this is a group that I’ve liked at least some since debut. It took me a little while to really really get into them, despite consistently liking a lot of their music. There was a member who rubbed me the wrong way (guess who with my incredible track record of who leaves groups), and I hadn’t quite been hooked. With “Luna” I got super super into them, and then when the Malus album came out, that was on repeat. I got pointed at Seoho/Leedo covers at some point around there too, and I kind of desperately want more of that combo. Favorite Members: Seoho, Leedo, Hwanwoong Favorite Songs: “Luna,” “Same Scent,” “Life Is Beautiful,” literally the entire Malus album

Onewe:

I feel like I have to talk about them alongside their brother group. I’ve liked them since they were MAS 0094, and they’ve grown and evolved as musicians. They are my one Kpop band that I absolutely love, though I am passingly fond of several others. I have a lot of feelings about their music. Favorite Members: Dongmyeong, Harin Favorite Songs: “Veronica,” “AuRoRa,” “Beginning of Spring,” basically their entire discography?

Ateez:

I thought that they were pretty good at debut, liked some of their songs, but never really got super into them until recently. I’ve now done a full discography listen, determined that I like a lot of their stuff, but am also kind of glad that I got into them during Deja Vu era. It’s been a good era. I love how well rounded they are as a group, and I love how dramatic and well executed a lot of their sound is. Their storyline usage is fascinating, and I will continue to look forward to its development. Favorite Members: Seonghwa, Yeosang Favorite MV/Song: “Eternal Sunshine,” “Wave,” “Turbulence”

Golden Child:

This is a group whose music I’ve been quite fond of since debut, and I only really started getting into properly around 2021. I honestly can’t entirely explain that one because I’ve liked a lot of their music for a long time! They are so consistently good, and I really love watching them perform, but it just finally clicked this era for some reason (maybe people to talk Kpop stuff with, that’s my best guess). The vocal depth in this group is incredible and they just live in a set of sounds that I love. Woolim’s music production value is, per usual, very much a thing that I appreciate. Favorite Members: Y, Seungmin, Bomin, Joochan Favorite MV/Song: “DDARA,” “Pump It Up,” “Singing in the Rain,” “Spell,” “Burn It,” like most of their songs honestly?

E’last:

I’ve adored them since debut, and I’m glad that they still seem to be going strong despite the past few years. Their vocal line is so deep, I love their symphonic huge sound that they use, and they’re charming and ridiculous and delightful. They’re incredible dancers too, and it’s really interesting to see how they use choreography in conjunction with their music. Favorite Members: Won Hyuk, Baekgyul, Choi In, Seungyeop (yes I know that’s half the group, no I won’t narrow it down) Favorite MV/Song: uhhh, yes? “Tears of Chaos” I guess, “Shelter”

Tempest:

I was so excited for their debut, and they are off to a running start with incredible music and a really lovely team dynamic. I’ve pretty much liked all of their songs so far, and I’m very excited to see what else they end up doing at this point! Favorite Members: Hyuk, LEW, Hyeongseop, Hanbin Favorite MV/Song: “Taste the Feeling,” honestly most of their songs?

Stray Kids:

I’m going to say right now, this snuck up on me and hit me upside the head basically. I actually didn’t like them at debut, and I still don’t like their pre-late 2019 releases for mostly synesthesia related reasons (I smell/taste sounds, voices are often a pretty prominent flavor, and flavor composition changed in my favor). I love their rhythmic elements, and I am 100% sure I know which 3racha member I share the most music tastes with based on the fact that I like pretty much all of the songs that are his songs (it’s Han, this is probably going to be obvious if you’ve noticed anything that I’ve posted about them). From a musical standpoint, I love what they do rhythmically, and manage to have a noisy sound that works for me. I’m excited to see where they go in the future! I will note, Stray Kids can be hit and miss for me. I didn’t like anything in the Maxident album particularly, but I still love them a lot as a group, and they are incredible performers. I have seen them in concert during the Maniac tour in Seattle (got to be there for Seungmin realizing he could get the audience to swear, and that was the tipping point of him being fully on my bias list). Favorite Members: Han, Lee Know, Seungmin Favorite MV/Song: “Phobia,” “Neverending Story,” “Placebo,” “Thunderous,” “Winter Falls”

Others:

There are a bunch more boy groups that I like. Here’s a decent list of other ones that you might see me post (biases in parentheses): TXT (Huening Kai, Soobin), A.C.E. (Jun, Wow), The Boyz (Ju Haknyeon, New), WEi (Donghan, Seokhwa), Cravity (Minhee, Jungmo), Drippin (Hyeop, Changuk), BtoB (Hyunsik, Minhyuk), Pentagon (Yanan, Hui), and a decent number of others at least in passing. This list grows and changes over time, and I am mostly not listing disbanded/inactive groups that I will forever love.

Girl Groups

I’ve had some recent losses of groups on the girl groups front, so if it seems like some of these are less fleshed out than they sometimes are, that’s why. I’m focusing on at least somewhat active groups in this post, but there are a lot of older groups that if they suddenly reemerged to activity I would be very excited for. This also means that if a group has disbanded, they won’t be on here even if I’m still fond of them.

Rocket Punch:

I love their upbeat, bouncy style, and the members are all really charming I’m really looking forward to seeing how they will just get better and better as a group over time.  Favorite MV/Song: “Ring Ring” Favorite Members: Suyun, Yunkyeong

Everglow:

Again, this is a group where I really love their sound, and also really love their dance. I’m really curious to see where they go with their music as they get more established, but I enjoy their sort of style and concept a lot. Favorite MV/Song: “La Di Da” Favorite Members: Sihyeon, Yiren

Le Sserafim:

This is a group that I’ve been anticipating because I loved Yunjin on PD48, and I’ve been hoping to see her reach debut for a long time now. This was a spectacular debut for her, and I’m glad to see members of Iz*one get continuations to their careers. Favorite MV/Song: “Blue Flame” Favorite Members: Yunjin, Kazuha

Billlie:

As they’ve had a few comebacks, I’ve really fallen into adoring their music! I love the rock sound that they lean into, and I love their vocal depth as a team. Favorite MV/Song: “Ring Ma Bell” Favorite Members: Haram, Suhyeon

Dreamcatcher:

They’ve been on the verge of being on this list for a long time, but with me really starting to dig into their discography at last, and remembering just how consistently I like their sound, they belong here! Favorite MV/Song: “Maison,” “Vision” Favorite Members: Handong, Jiu

Others:

I also like a pretty wide array of girl groups. Some of the ones that spring to mind (biases in parentheses): WJSN (Dawon, Luda), (G)-idle (Yuqi), Mamamoo (Moonbyul), Lightsum (Chowon), and quite a few others including a lot of really strong recent (past year or so) debuts that I’m still forming full opinions of. Also, I’ve got to mention my favorite female soloists right now, Chungha and Lee Chaeyeon, and my favorite female duet Keembo (Kim Bohyung & Kim Boa).

CPOP

Cpop was my introduction to pop music properly with Jolin Tsai and Wang Leehom back in 1999 when they were just having their respective debuts. Both of them are artists that I still love. Cpop as an industry is much more rife with soloists than Kpop, so while I tend to actively prefer groups to soloists, there are a lot of soloists that I am really into in Cpop.

Some boy groups I love (biases in parentheses): Oner (Ling Chao), Nex7 (Zhengting), Uniq [technically also Kpop] (Wenhan), many of the ones that were connected to the various Idol Producer/Youth With You, Produce Camp seasons.

Some girl groups I love (biases in parentheses): There aren’t a lot of current girl groups I’m really invested in in Cpop, though I’d love to change that. I follow most of the groups connected to Youth With You or Produce 101/Produce Camp at some level.

Other soloists I love: Sunnee, Angela Hui, Li Yuchun, Liu Yuxin, a lot of the ones associated with the various IP/YWY, PD101/PC seasons.

Since I’ve mentioned it a fair amount, here’s my quick thoughts on the various PD101 China/Produce Camp & Idol Producer/Youth With You season final groups:

Nine Percent Overall, I was pretty happy with the line up of this group, and they had some great songs. I posted a lot about Idol Producer while it was happening, so you can dig through old posts if you look for that tag. Favorite Members: Zhu Zhengting, You Zhangjing, Lin Yanjun

Rocket Girls I had some disappointments with this line up, but I was also incredibly happy that a few of my favorites made it through, somewhat against my expectations after Korean iterations of this show. Again, I posted about this heavily while it was airing. Favorite Members: Sunnee, Lai Meiyun

UNINE This was line up wise probably my favorite boys season across the board of Cpop competition shows of this genre to date. I loved the line up, and had a lot of thoughts and feelings about the show as it aired. Favorite Members: Li Wenhan, Li Zhenning, Yao Bonan (then known as Yao Mingming)

R1SE In contrast, I wasn’t super into this season. A lot of my favorites were eliminated kind of early, though the one that made it through to the final episode also made it through to the final group. Favorite Members: Zhao Lei

Bonbon Girls I went into this season feeling kind of jaded towards Produce Camp and not expecting much. Turned out that some of my favorites did quite well, and there were some really good stages. A really vocally rich season. Favorite Members: Chen Zhouxuan, Curley Gao

THE9 I came into this season with strong feelings about some of the contestants and really wanting to see them succeed, but not sure that there was much chance, in the case of the one who was my most favorite, knowing that she’d had both prior success and prior negative responses. It turns out that this final group was really delightful as a line up for me. Favorite Members: Liu Yuxin, Xie Keyin, Kiki, Lu Keran

INTO1 The concept of this season as a global season was interesting, and I thought that there were ways that it paid off well, and also ways that it turned out a little disappointing. There were some members that I was really happy with, but my absolute favorite contestant, while he surprised me in getting to the final had no real chance of making it into the group (Xue Bayi). Favorite Members: Liu Yu, Bo Yuan, Rikimaru, Lin Mo

IXFORM This season went from one of my favorites in some ways to a mess that almost ended up with no debut, and I still feel bad for the kids involved in the mess. I do quite like a lot of the final line up, though there are a good chunk of my favorites that didn’t make it. Not sure if that’s a bad thing for them all things considered. Favorite Members: Sun Yinghao, Liu Jun, Duan Xingxing

Liz Gets a Boyfriend (March 2010 - October 2010)

So it’s clear something was happening with TayLiz before this point due to all the cuddling and movie theater dates and sleeping in the same room and all that. However, as the Valentine’s Day shenanigans so clearly demonstrated for us, Taylor clearly didn’t see whatever was happening as a “real relationship.” Likely because of this lack of committment, and (according to L Chat rumors) Liz’s very conservative homophobic family, Liz starts pursuing a guy she likes.

Meet Jason. Currently he’s a photographer for touring acts in Nashville, but at one point, he, like Liz, was a struggling musician in Nashville, and Liz was INTO HIM. So let’s get into that:

4 March 2010 - Fearless in Tampa. Back on tour.

23 March 2010 - Liz starts flirting with Jason on Twitter:

1 April 2010 - Liz tweets about Taylor (note the TAY again):

3 April 2010 - Liz tweets at Taylor with an inside joke about a quick change room. It’s possible that they’re still hooking up/whatever while Liz is pursuing Jason, but clearly neither of them see it as a real relationship.

7 April 2010 - Taylor makes a joke about Liz on Twitter:

15 April 2010 - TayLiz and Caitlin are papped shopping together

16 April 2010 - TayLiz are papped shopping together in Beverley Hills

26 April 2010 -  Taylor posts the “Demonstrating my fine athletic skills and more” vlog. She dedicates a portion of the vlog to Liz and the background music of that part is a song called She by the band Parachute (Liz loves the band and is close friends with one of the members). Taylor wears her IKYWT shirt again.

30 April 2010 - Jason’s birthday. Liz tweets at him about it.

In the Journey to Fearless documentary for the Hub, Taylor and Liz bake a cake for a guy she likes and wants to be her boyfriend. Taylor seems generally supportive of it. I think it’s reasonable to assume this is referring to Jason:

4 May 2010 -   Liz tweets a link to Poison and Wine by the Civil Wars. 

The chorus of Poison and Wine goes “I don’t love you, but I always will.” Years and years after this, Liz will release a song called “I Don’t LV U Anymore” where the chorus goes “I don’t love you anymore, but I don’t love you any less.” This may be a reach, but to me this signals that Liz is moving on from Taylor.

To me, this reads as Taylor writing about all the mess TayLiz has turned into in the wake of JH and Jason. There are lines in Story of Us that are really similar to those in the unreleased song Battle/Let’s Go and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together where Taylor talks about a very messy very public fight and breakup that all of their friends were around for, as well as the person she’s singing about having another person they’re dating. This fits for this moment in time. They’ve just been on tour, and then together in the Bahamas, surrounded by coworkers, friends, and family, and Liz has started seeing someone else.

CONCLUSION: Liz is moving on. Taylor may or may not be happy about it. Speak Now is coming. So it makes sense that, whether for PR reasons, romantic reasons, or both, Taylor steps out with Jake Gyllenhaal in late October. And oh boy, is Liz about to be jealous:
