The German arms manufacturing giant Rheinmetall is building a factory in Ukraine. In addition to being a practical way to support Ukraine's fight against aggression by Putin's Russia, it shows that foreign companies have economic confidence in Ukraine.
The German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall will open an armored vehicle plant in Ukraine within the next 12 weeks, the company's CEO Armin Papperger told CNN in an interview published on July 10. The concern's director also announced plans to train Ukrainian staff to maintain tanks and other armored vehicles produced in that factory. "(Ukrainians) have to help themselves — if they always have to wait (for) Europeans or Americans (to) help them over the next 10 or 20 years… that is not possible," Papperger said. Rheinmetall's CEO revealed that the planned factory will be located in western Ukraine, protected from Russian strikes.
Ukrainians have shown themselves to be highly motivated, extremely resourceful, and creative. After the war the country could become an economic powerhouse like South Korea.
NATO membership for Ukraine is tricky because of Article 5 in the treaty. It stipulates that an attack on one NATO member is an attack on all and that all member countries would be obliged to respond to such an an attack. So NATO membership for Ukraine before the end of Putin's unprovoked war would result in a NATO-Russia conflict.
So NATO has found a way around this by creating the NATO-Ukraine Council. As the name implies, the council includes the NATO countries plus Ukraine; Article 5 does not come into play with this council. I'm still not familiar with all the details but it seems a little like an engagement prior to a marriage – with no wedding date being set.
NATO Latest: Zelenskiy Calls NATO Summit a ‘Great Success’
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the NATO summit was successful in providing Ukraine with security commitments after softening his earlier criticism of the alliance’s steps toward offering his country a path toward membership.  The G-7 said it would provide commitments to Kyiv on the sidelines of the second day of the NATO leaders’ summit in Vilnius, where the defense alliance agreed on package of measures aimed at deepening ties with Kyiv and underlining the alliance’s long-term support. The allies pledged multi-year assistance to Ukraine; created a new NATO-Ukraine Council, which will meet later Wednesday; and sped up the process that will allow Ukraine to join NATO. US President Joe Biden met with Zelenskiy, who had criticized the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Tuesday for not having set a clear timeline for Ukrainian accession.
