So about basic tailoring... This might be an easy to answer and dumb question but I feel slightly overwhelmed when I go to google this myself.. where do you start learning? Ideally for as little money as possible. Clothes are difficult to fit to my body type and I have some items I would like to repair so i really need this.
Don't apologize, I'm always happy to get asks! Number 1 piece of advice: don't be afraid to be dumb. I've only been sewing for two years; I had to Google how to thread a needle and it took me three days to learn how to thread a bobbin on a machine.
This got very long so the rest is below the cut
In my experience, a good-sized spool of machine thread usually costs about three dollars. If your local grocery store sells general merchandise, they might have some common colors in a "sewing center" section, which will almost definitely be cheaper than if you go to a dedicated sewing shop. They might even sell sewing kits with basic supplies. Hand sewing thread tends to be cheaper than machine thread. You can use machine thread for hand sewing, but you can’t use hand-sewing thread on a machine. If your hands tremble a lot or you're not confident, some places sell pre-threaded needles.
There are a lot of sewing supplies available, but you really don't need much to get started:
thread that's roughly the same color as your fabric
some pins
sharp needle that's big enough for you to comfortably thread and small enough to not poke way bigger holes in the fabric than the thread warrants
a pair of scissors. They don't even need to be fabric scissors! I used regular craft scissors for a year and a half until I found some fabric scissors on clearance. You're not going to be cutting fabric as a beginner anyway, just thread.
One rule for baby’s first repair/tailoring job: make it reversible. You’re going to make mistakes. You’re not going to start out knowing everything there is to know. You can always cut threads or take off buttons, but you can’t un-cut fabric or magically reverse huge holes.
For tailoring: find a piece of clothing you like. I recommend starting with a no-frills sleeveless shirt with non-adjustable straps. Buy it to fit the biggest/widest part of your body. The looser it fits, the more room you have for adjustments.
Put it on inside-out, figure out where it’s too big, fold the fabric in, and pin it in place. Carefully take the shirt off, lay it out flat, thread your needle, consult a video tutorial on how to prepare the needle and thread for sewing (never forget that double knot), make the first stitch where the knot of thread won’t irritate your skin, and sew the fold in place.
When in doubt, leave more room than expected, because your body is constantly changing to accommodate your organs’ various activities; something that barely fits you when you first wake up is going to be causing actual pain by midday.
Small jobs that are low-risk and can help boost your confidence: shortening tank top straps (fold fabric over and sew in place), reinforcing or re-attaching buttons, and doing simple hems (cuff fabric, fold over twice, and sew in place) on pajama pants. Fuzzy fabrics tend to be very forgiving and naturally hide messy stitches.
If you need fabric, do not automatically head to the fabric store. Yes, they’ll have a huge variety, but it’ll be sold at a premium and you’ll have to machine-wash your fabric before using it to remove the shrinking (an additive that helps the fabric lay flat on the bolt). Look in thrift stores and garage sales.
You can get a lot of mileage out of a men’s extra-large T-shirt. If you need more fabric than that, look for secondhand sheet sets. They’re the closest thing you can get to straight-off-the-bolt fabric that isn’t sold as an expensive hobby product, plus there’s some elastic in the fitted sheet. I’m currently in the process of making a dress with a circle skirt using fabric from a 4-piece twin sheet set I thrifted for sixteen bucks. Buying that much fabric at a fabric store would’ve cost several times more.
If you’re still worried, take a breath. Whatever you don’t know, you will learn. Google is a powerful tool and YouTube has heaps of tutorials. The worst that can happen is that you make a mistake. Mistakes can be fixed. Mistakes are how you learn. The worst mistakes often make great stories.
TL;DR: you only need four things, buy clothing to fit the largest part of your body, get cheap fabric from thrift stores, and don’t be afraid to make stupid mistakes!

Life in numbers
For many years my entire life has been revolved around numbers.
How many calories are in this? How many slices should I eat? How much weight have I lost/gained? What size pants am I now? How many days until I can binge again? How many hours since I last ate? It's only 11am, that's too early for breakfast. It's past 6PM, I shouldn't eat anymore.
Numbers mean so much to me. They are the centre of my every thought. Food following a close - almost equal - second place in my fuzzy brain.
Everything is revolved around numbers.
Today, I ate up to 620 calories of food until 7PM. Then I was out having dinner with a friend. I ordered the appetiser size of the chicken katsu, a small bowl of miso soup and a diet coke.
I thought that should be all. I may still be below 1200 calories - my daily calorie goal. But as dinner finished up, and I noticed the time, having only spent less than an hour with my friend, I knew we had to do something else. With it being the weekend, there wasn't much else we could do other than getting dessert.
A little bit of sweetness couldn't do too much harm right? I've been good all day. I've controlled my hunger and sweet cravings all day. I deserve this treat.
I will just offer to share so that I don't eat too much.
After dessert the sweet cravings would not go away. I bid farewell and we went our separate ways. I decided I deserved more sweets. I went to the closest grocery store and thought that a serving of "Hello Panda"s will satisfy and I shall make my way home.
The thing with living within the heart of the city is that venues close late, everything is within a walking distance and they are all terribly good at advertising.
I went to the store, walked through all the aisles and started my regular scan of calories, fats, carbs and sugar. Wanting to eat everything in sight, but putting everything back once I caught a glimpse of the nutrition numbers.
I noticed a woman doing the same, then it hits me that people are for sure watching me. They know I have a problem. They know why I'm checking the back of everything I pick up.
Upon realising that everything is too much, too many calories and carbs and fats and sugars. I opt for two mandarins, strawberries and a tub of zero sugar, 120 calories-a-tub ice cream.
Once I left the grocery store, I stumble upon an asian grocery store just across the previous store I was in. Perfect! They have the "Hello Pandas" conveniently displayed by the windows. I will buy a packet.
And so I do. Plus a packet of pea chips.
Making my way back home again I eat the "Hello Pandas". When I finish the snack, I think in my head that there is another asian grocery on the way, again.
I tell myself, if it's closed then it's the sign that should deter me from buying another snack.
I reach the store and it's closed. I'm disappointed, but a part of me is relieved.
But not a second longer I remember that conveniently, a convenience store is just by the crossing near my place. A packet of chips shouldn't hurt me.
So I buy some chips. Then finally I force myself to really go home now.
I shower, assemble the snacks I bought and begin a movie. In between snacks, I make a mug cake, melt some chocolate for the strawberries, grab some lollies from my pantry, eat some kimchi from the fridge. Every part of my brain is screaming at me.
Telling me just how disgusting I look. I avoid seeing reflections of my face, afraid to see that disgusting puffiness of my cheeks or the double chin adorning my already pimply cheeks and chin.
I refrain from body checking. But I still catch a glimpse. Knowing that my stomach is bloated, poking through my pajamas. I'm disgusted.
I hate the way my skin feels. The stiffness of my stomach because of how much I have gobbled down my throat. The feeling of my arms in the sleeves of my pyjama top.
I hate feeling weight. I hate feeling full.
But I also hate feeling hungry. Depleted of all energy.
There's no happy medium. I constantly think of food. Of how good a soft, sweet and moist cake would feel between my teeth right now.
I hate this. I want to have a good relationship with my body and food. I want to so badly eat, without feeling guilty after, without thinking of all these numbers that run through my head. Without thinking of how much I have to run to burn off all the calories I just consumed.
I want all of this, but I also want to be sick. I want to be sickly thin. I want people to look at me and think I'm small.
I don't want to be fat. I hate fat. I hate.
I hate telling people I don't like the taste of something, to make people think I'm a picky eater. When in reality, it's because I hate the amount of calories or carbs are in that food.
I hate ordering noodle soups just sip on the soup and leave the noodles aside. People telling me that I'm missing the best part. I know I am.
I love pasta, I love burgers, I love sushi, I love ice cream, I love pizza, I love cookies, I love cake, I love food. I love food. I love food. I love food.
But I hate weight. I hate calories, I hate fat, I hate sugar, I hate bloatedness. I hate being big, I hate not fitting into clothing. I hate. numbers.
I haven't had my period the past two months. People think it's stress. And maybe it is. But I know it's from not eating enough. While on holiday, I only ate about 1 proper meal a day. Only drinking a quarter of every drink I buy, taking about 3 spoons of food I order. And the majority of the food I ate were fruits. And now coming back home, I eat less than 1200 calories a day.
Until now, I just ate everything in sight.
But tomorrow that's changing. Even though I want a healthy body. I'm not thin enough. I'm going between 52-53kgs and I want to be in the 40s. September I am taking back control. I am going to lose that weight.

Tumblr media
1 - When was the last time you spent over $100 in one transaction? What did you buy? I don't remember, honestly. Maybe a beach ride or something like that? Most of my transactions are between £5-75.
2 - Do you sleep with a stuffed animal? Would you judge a grown adult for doing so? Yeah, my stuffed bear and no, of course I wouldn't. I really don't see the issue with having a comfort "item" of sorts.
3 - Would you describe yourself as fashion-conscious, or do you just wear whatever feels comfortable? I wear whatever's comfortable but of course (like everyone) I'm influenced by what's available in the shops or by what I see online.
4 - The last time you got up from where you’re sitting, where did you go and what did you do? Uh well, I only just sat here for the first time since I got up this morning lol. I was on the sofa earlier and got up to give the animals their evening treats, get ready for bed and come upstairs.
5 - Would you rather read an erotic novel or watch an erotic film? Read an erotic novel.
6 - Who taught you how to tell the time on a proper analogue clock? I think it was probably my dad.
7 - What’s your favourite way to make your home smell good? Do you spend a lot of money on making this happen? Scented wax melts and well, I guess so, but when you break it down it probably costs 50p per day which isn't much really. But I buy in bulk maybe 2-3 times a year and spend £50 or so.
8 - How long have you had the computer/tablet you’re currently using? Does it need replacing or upgrading? About four months, so no.
9 - When you’re home alone, do you make sure all your doors are kept locked? The front door locks automatically when you close it, but the back door is always unlocked if we're in the house.
10 - How often do you light candles? Do you just like regular ones or do you prefer scented ones or ones that make pretty patterns when they melt? I light candles everyday as my wax burner runs on those little tea light things.
11 - Are you any good at taking care of plants? I've never tried to.
12 - How many surveys have you taken so far today? Will you take anymore surveys today once you’ve finished this one? This is the second one. I might take a couple more after, it depends how I'm feeling.
13 - What are the main two colours in the room you’re currently in? Did you pick these colours out yourself? Purple and white, and yes.
14 - What was the last hot drink you consumed? What about cold drink? I had a coffee when I got home from work at lunchtime, and I had a Pepsi Max when I got back from my evening visits/jobs.
15 - Do you have piercings anywhere except your ears? How many and what are they? I have seven piercings in my ears as well as my nose and belly button, but I suspect the latter is closed up now.
16 - Do you prefer taking baths or showers? How come? Showers, but our shower is broken so it's baths for now.
17 - What time do you need to wake up tomorrow morning? What is it that you have to be up for? 8am and work. I have a cat visit, three dog walks and then an evening cat visit and a horse visit too.
18 - If you work, how often do you get paid? Would you prefer to get paid more or less often? I run my own business and people pay me as/when, really. Mostly it's weekly, but some pay daily or monthly too.
19 - What does your favourite pair of pyjamas look like? Do you wear them to sleep or just to be comfy around the house? I never wear pajamas. I sleep in like, an over-sized t-shirt (plus leggings if it's freezing) and then if I'm just lazing at home I'll wear leggings and a top.
20 - How often do you wake up in the night needing a pee? Once or twice. I can probably count on one hand the amount of times in my life that I've ever slept through the night lol.
21 - What apps do you use the most on your phone? TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and various games.
22 - Do you prefer cats or dogs? Do you own any of either? I love both. I don't feel the need to put myself in either category. We have two cats, a kitten and a dog, yes.
23 - Do you have one of those fridges that has an ice-maker in the front? If not, would you find one useful? No, but I house-sit for work and one of the houses I stay in has one and I use it CONSTANTLY lol.
24 - Do you like wearing hats? What’s your favourite style? No. It's a sensory thing. I hate having my head/ears covered. 25 - If you live in a household with pets, who is responsible for their care - both in terms of finance and the physical tasks involved? That would be me, really. I pay for everything - food, insurance, vet visits, treats, toys, equipment - I walk the dog 5 days a week too but Mike does do weekends. The cats don't need much looking after but I do all the feeding, litter trays etc.
26 - What’s your opinion on leggings as pants? >> I wear leggings as pants all the time? what even is there to say about it <<<Same. I don’t care. <--- exactly.
27 - Have you ever driven in bare feet or do you think that’s too dangerous? Yeah, I used to when I worked a 40 minute drive away. My feet would be so hot and sweaty in shoes that it was uncomfortable (again, sensory issues) so being bare foot was way more comfortable. It's not illegal here either.
28 - Have you ever walked out of a job before? What were the circumstances and did you ever go back? Hmm, not exactly, but I did (twice) hand in my notice and leave. I never went back to either. I left the first one for personal reasons (relationship breakdown) and the second for MH reasons.
29 - Do you collect anything? Are these things worth money or are they practical/sentimental items? Just wax melts - they're just things I like to have, I guess.
30 - Do you have anything hanging from your ceiling apart from lights? No.

SLEEP MEME
Type of bed: Rio has whatever bed is available at the HPA dorms - I assume it's decently sized, maybe a Japanese double (a bit bigger than an American full) or a Japanese queen (narrower than an American queen, but not too much smaller). At her parents' house in Sapporo, she has a double. When she was really little, she shared a bedroom with her middle brother, Kazuya. When her oldest brother, Noriaki, moved out, Kazuya took his room, leaving the other room for Rio alone, until she left for HPA.
Number of blankets: Many, many blankets, although she doesn't necessarily use them all. Rio is about maximum coziness, so in addition to her top sheet and comforter, she probably has like, a knitted blanket, and some thin (mostly-useless) one that's official anime goods. Depending on how deeply she's sleeping, she might have wrapped herself up in all of the blankets and sheets in a powerful cocoon.
Number of pillows: At least one big, comfy pillow, and two smaller fuzzy ones for cuddling with, or just sort of as decoration. She has considered getting a dakimakura but is a little embarrassed, even if she probably wouldn't get a lewd one. Maybe someday.
Type of clothing: Given the choice, a loose, comfy sweater or a sleep shirt, plus some pajama pants (probably branded with some kind of character or media property, not unlike what's referenced here. However, Rio is the kind of person to not get enough sleep, or overwork herself, which means she's extremely likely to fall asleep in the middle of the day, or just crawl into bed in her regular clothes and take a nap.
Does it matter where they sleep? Nope. Obviously, she prefers a bed, but if Rio is sleepy enough (and she often is), she can sleep anywhere. She has pretty regularly fallen asleep at her work desk in her lab, or at her desk in her dorm room, next to (or on top of) her laptop.
What do they do if they cannot fall asleep? This isn't a problem for Rio basically ever. Rather than 'can't fall asleep,' it's more often the case that Rio loses track of time, or puts off sleep, and in those cases, it's usually because she's reading manga or light novels, playing her Switch, or at her computer playing Genshin Impact, Critically Acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, or any of the hundreds of game in her Steam backlog.
Frequent dreams / nightmares: Rio doesn't necessarily remember the specifics of the car accident that took the lives of her parents, but it's her most common nightmare, easily. Others are embarrassing herself at a scientific conference or presentation, falling, or all her teeth falling out, a lot of the common nightmares. When it comes to positive dreams, they're usually things like dreaming about dates or otherwise spending time with her partner, climate change and environmental problems being Solved Forever so she can become a hikikomori and never have to work again, or flying with a bunch of birds.
Deep slumber or naps? Rio is truly dead to the world when she is sleeping. If she is sleeping, it is deep, whether that's at a normal hour, or at a random afternoon hour. She does nap a lot, because her poor time management skills and general problem with staying up too late means she loses the opportunity for unbroken nighttime sleep, and has to just catch up where she can.
When do they sleep? Ehhhhhh it's hard to say specifically. Even on good nights, she stays up until 2-3 playing games or reading, and often sleeps until around 11, or even noon if she doesn't have anything super pressing to do. Otherwise, her sleeping is "whenever she's able to do so."
What could wake them up? Almost nothing. This is not an invitation to try, but if she's asleep, she can sleep through almost anything. Violently shaking her will eventually wake her up, as will like, loud, sustained alarms like a fire alarm, but anything short of that? She's staying out, sorry.

Clothing - Those #%*&^% Pajamas
I feel like progressing to Pajamas in this blog requires that I start out by addressing, on the whole, Eberjey Pajamas.
That is because if you have run even a single internet search for button-up pajamas for after a mastectomy, these pajamas (or one of their many clones) will appear, guaranteed.
The original pajamas are Straight Size Only (up to XL), so I can't comment on the quality or durability specifically, but I can synthesize data to decide they are almost certainly not worth paying Brand Name Prices for.
Since it's summer, I'm going to do all of these as shirt/short sets, but all of these come in shirts/pants, too.
Eberjey has several styles of pajamas in several different fabrics, but the ones in question are their Giselle pajamas, which look like this
Tumblr media
These pajamas are 95% modal, 5% spandex and they START at $128 for a shirt/shorts set like the one shown.
Modal is, of course, a cotton alternative that is pretty much rayon with a different thickness/drape and a lot more ad copy about how environmentally friendly it is (the truthfulness of which is a bit beyond the scope here but there's a lot of resources available). Tencel, one of the brand name modal fabrics, has (allegedly) an even better weight, drape, and environmental impact than regular no-name modal. Eberjey's pajamas are made from Tencel, not unbranded modal yarn.
I realize everyone is different, but I bought a pair of modal pajamas and I'm not really a fan. It feels really slick compared to cotton (almost greasy), has kind of a strange weight/drape in between a decent cotton and polyester, and it seems to almost naturally be cold compared to ambient air, which might be an advantage to some people in some situations but it's not really ideal for me.
Unlike a lot of lower-priced dupes, the other pajamas available that are dupes of Eberjey are all made of the same fabric, give or take (I suspect they are regular modal, not Tencel. I'm unsure if a layperson wearing pajamas would even be able to notice a difference).
Target's dupe is a perennial favorite for recovery from mastectomies of all types, and it's easy to see why. It comes up to a 4x (which looks like maybe a true 4x, according to the sizing chart) and has a variety of patterns if you're not looking for a vaguely gender neutral solid-with-piping Eberjey clone, and the shirt/shorts set is less than $25.
Land's End also sells a dupe (allegedly a true Tencel dupe, not just a regular modal one) up to a 3X. They don't have quite as many sizes or patterns as Target, but if you watch for sales you can get them for a bit cheaper than Target's version. These are the ones I bought, and I paid about $17 for a shirt/shorts set. I'm not a huge fan of modal in general, but they are wrinkle-free, comfortable, and fit me well in the 3x. They'll definitely get worn even if I have to pick and choose situations where I'd like to be a little colder.
If you absolutely, positively need the largest size range in this product, Amazon has a similar-but-not identical cotton/modal/elastane that goes up to 7X (though you may only have 1 or 2 color options above a 2X) for a similar price as the Target or Land's End.
I was shocked to discover, in the course of my research, that none of the shops I normally associate with vaguely trendy plus-sized women's clothing have dupes of these pajamas! I'm not ACTUALLY shocked (I feel like they're run by people who pick and choose which trends to follow based on what they think will make money, not actual popularity and market deficiencies, but again, not the scope of this write-up!) but I feel like it's a huge missed opportunity to sell something that's super popular in straight sizes so you can "match" your siblings or friends or or whatever or just have something that's on-trend and feels semi-expensive.
There's other options in the mid-range bracket—I know Gap sells near-dupes of these pajamas as well up to 2X (though they are sold as separates if that is a plus for you)—but they're more like 50% of Eberjey's prices instead of 20%, and most of the blatant Eberjey clones are nearly identical in price to the original. A lot of the dupes don't have any increased size ranger over Eberjey either (so no larger than an XL), which is an interesting choice but I'm no longer shocked by that sort of clownery anymore.
Will these last as long as the Eberjey pajamas? It's doubtful, but if you can buy 4 or 5 sets for the same price, I'm not sure it's a real concern.

The truth is WomanWithin's plus size clothing selection simply cannot be beat when it comes variety and affordable prices
