REVIEW
Her Princess at Midnight by Erica Ridley
Regency Fairy Tales #2
Short sapphic retelling of a favorite fairy tale that I believe would appeal to Young Adults and be a great read for them. Since the storyline is so well known, a lot of detail is probably not needed though if a person did NOT know the Cinderella tale, more might have helped and given more depth.
I liked Princess Ammalia the best in the story and enjoyed the way she put the stepsisters and their mother in place while tending to Cynthia/Cinderella. The prince had potential while dancing with Cynthia but returned to his truer nature when he found out what his father’s plans for him for the future would be.
All in all, this was a quick easy read of a well-known tale that had a few twists and two women who found their happily ever after. It is not my favorite of this author’s books, but still a nice way to spend the evening.
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
BLURB
What if Cinderella fell for the handsome prince’s… sister? Cynthia lives a life of drudgery, toiling for her stepmother and stepsisters without receiving gratitude or pay. Every day is the same… until a royal retinue sweeps into town, inviting every unwed maiden to vie for the hand of the visiting prince. The moment she lays eyes on the prince’s beautiful sister, Cynthia is smitten. She’s never been to a ball, and she’s determined not to miss this one. But when her family refuses to allow her to attend—not that Cynthia even has a gown to wear—it will take a miracle to escape the attic and catch the eye of the princess who holds the key to her heart!

KotLC Fandom Gift Exchange: Poll 2
The first poll has decided that the July exchange will focus on a specific AU! (If you're not sure what an exchange is, check out that first post.)
I've selected a variety of AUs that will allow a range of interpretations. I'd be happy for any of these to be the theme!
Character AU Options
These can take place in any setting (e.g. the human world, the Lost Cities, etc.) or time period, but some characters are changed from canon.
Human AU: Characters that aren't canonically human are now human. This encompasses a lot of things!
Species Swap AU: The characters are now a different species (EXCEPT human). They could be something that's not in the series at all, like mermaids or ghosts, or could become a different canon species, like ogres or gnomes.
Ruler AU: Characters that aren't canonically rulers are now rulers. This could be either Lost Cities rulers (councillors, monarchs, etc.) or human rulers (presidents, monarchs, etc.)
Criminal AU: Characters that were previously on the "good" side are now on the "bad" side. They could be in the Neverseen, be supervillains, be assassins, or anything else.
Setting AU Options
The characters can be the same or modified to fit the setting, but the story no longer takes place in the canon world.
Fairy Tale AU: The characters are now in a fairy tale. This could be an existing one or an original one.
Hollywood AU: The characters are now in Hollywood. They could be actors, reality TV stars, singers, dancers, influencers, or whatever else you'd like.
Domestic/Mundane AU: The characters are taken out of the action of the story to a more mundane setting. This could be family life, working a human job like retail, going on a road trip, or whatever else.
Science Fiction AU: It's now a science fiction story. Think gadgets and machines, aliens, cyberpunk, and the like.
Time Period AU Options
These are similar to setting AUs, but specifically involve time periods of the human world. You could still set them in the Lost Cities, but show how the Lost Cities are different during these times as well (especially considering that they were formerly more connected to the human world).
Medieval AU: The story takes place in the (typically European) Middle Ages.
Old Britain AU: The story takes place during the Regency or Victorian era of British history (think Jane Austen or Emily Brontë).
Feel free to advocate for the theme you want!

Unexpectedly Yours: Part 2
Fandom: Ted Lasso (Regency AU)
Pairing: Roy Kent x F!Reader
Summary: Lord Roy Kent still has yet to marry. He hates the notion that marriage is a way to ensure your status in society. You have delayed your debut to society for years because of the same idea. So what happens when two people who hate the idea of marriage are constantly drawn to each other?
Part 1
Tumblr media
You giggle as you watch Phoebe and Cece run around the room, "breathing fire" and roaring like a dragon.
"I'm going to eat you!" Cece roars in a deep voice, right into your face.
You fake scream, "No! Please! Don't eat me! I'll do anything!"
"Anything?" Phoebe asks in her own 'dragon' voice. When you nod, she goes, "Then you have to give me your kingdom so I can be a dragon king!"
"No! I can't let you have my kingdom!"
"Then we're going to eat you!" Phoebe and Cece creep towards you until Lord Kent "pops" up from behind a chaise lounge with a wooden sword in hand, "I'm here to save you, princess!" he explains in his raspy voice.
There's a small crown on his head and he looks a bit ridiculous to you, so you snicker a bit. He points his sword in your direction, "Shut it."
You roll your lips inward to hold back your laughter.
Cece and Phoebe turn to him, "Who are you?"
"I'm the prince..knight come to rescue the princess from you dragons," he points the wooden weapon towards the two little girls before him.
"You'll have to kill us to save her then!" Cece explains.
Lord Kent cocks a brow at your young cousin then looks at you. You give him a shrug. Sensing his hesitation, Phoebe speaks up, "You have to kill us, Uncle Roy. Stab us right through the heart!"
He looks at his niece in disbelief, "I'm not stabbing you, you odd girl."
She rolls her eyes, "It's just pretend, Uncle Roy. You're not going to hurt me. Besides, you can't save Princess Y/N if you don't kill us. Then she'll be dragon food!"
Cece and Phoebe bare their teeth and their "claws".
Lord Kent sighs and gently pokes Phoebe in the chest, "Stab." She exaggeratedly falls to the floor, her tongue sticking out to signal her death. He then pokes Cece in the chest, "Stab." She, too, exaggerates her death, similar to her new friend.
"My hero," you chuckle.
Lord Kent walks over the "dead bodies" of your cousin and his niece. He holds out his hand, "I've saved you, Princess Y/N," he says unenthusiastically as he pulls you from your place on the floor.
You snicker, "Thank you, Sir Kent. You're so very brave."
Cece opens her eyes, lifting her head up, "You have to kiss her too!"
"No, I don't," the viscount quickly says.
"Yes, you do! It's how all the fairy tales end!"
"No, they don't."
Phoebe's eyes open and she adds, "Yes, they do, Uncle Roy. Remember the one you told me last night? That ended with a kiss and they lived happily ever after! Do you not want a happily ever after?"
The viscount lets out a deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose, "Phoebe-"
"Just do it," you say, making him turn back to you, "It'll be quick."
"Fine," he grits, appearing as though kissing you is the worse thing in the world. You can't help but feel a bit saddened by this.
He faces his entire body towards you. He steps closer to you and begins leaning in, closer and closer until his lips hover over yours. Just as he's about to kiss you, the door to the room opens,
"Alright, my love, time- oh," It's Lord Kent's sister, "What's going on?" she looks at Lord Kent with a questioning gaze, eyes fluttering between you and him.
Lord Kent steps back, "Nothing."
"Mummy, can I please stay longer?" Phoebe begs as she scrambles from the floor.
"Unfortunately not, my love. We have to get ready for the ball tonight."
Phoebe grimaces, "Another ball?"
"Yes, another ball," Clara smooths down some of Phoebe's hair and then looks up to Lord Kent, "Brother, shall we or-"
"No. Let's go," he rushes from your side, walking past his sister and niece.
Clara clears her throat, "I apologize for him."
You shake your head, "No. It's alright," you curtsey, "Thank you for allowing Phoebe to spend time with Cecelia. They had a lot of fun."
"I'm sure we can plan another play date for them soon, Lady Y/N," she gives a small bow, "Enjoy the rest of your day."
"You as well."
You and Cece watch the Kents walk down the stairs and head out the door. Once gone, Cece looks up at you with a pout, "You didn't kiss. That means there's no happily ever after."
"It's alright, Cece. Some people just don't get a happily ever after."
___________________________
At the Ruthford Ball, Clara and Lord Kent walk around the ballroom, side by side.
"So...shall we discuss what I interrupted earlier?"
"It was nothing," Lord Kent grunts to his sister.
"Didn't look like it was nothing. Looked to me like you two were about to kiss," she says with a playful smirk.
"It's just pretend. We were pretending for the girls," Lord Kent explains, refusing to give his sister any satisfaction.
"You know, I hear that Lady Y/N is a very respectable woman, albeit she's not too fond marriage. Guess that's the one thing you two have in common."
Lord Kent sighs, stopping to face his sister, "What are you getting on about?"
She shrugs, "I think you two would be a fine match."
He scoffs, "She hates me."
Clara smirks, "Didn't seem like she hated you earlier. She looked very fixated on you."
"It was pretend," he grumbles, walking away from his sister, in desperate need of a drink.
As a server passes with a tray of flutes of champagne, he immediately grabs one. However, he isn't paying attention to where he was going and he bumps into someone...you.
The liquid spills over you, the glass shattering to the floor.
Nearby onlookers watch with curious gazes as you gasp and look up to see the perpetrator.
"Is this revenge?"
"Your new dress!" your mother cries out with a pout.
"Mama, it's fine."
"I can get you a new one." Lord Kent speaks up, causing your mother to realize he was the reason your new dress is soiled.
"O-oh. Lord Kent, I see the roles are reversed now."
"So it seems," he does his best to give your mother a polite look, "I can have the modiste make a new one for you."
You wave him off, "It's alr-"
"That would be lovely, Lord Kent. Thank you! My daughter very much appreciates it!" your mother speaks for you with such enthusiasm. She gives you a look that makes you speak up, "Yes. I'd very much appreciate it, Lord Kent," you give a slight bow and inwardly grimace. You hate that your mother makes you do this.
Lord Kent speaks up, "Lady Y/N, do you care much for the dress?"
"Pardon?" you look at him confused.
"Are you upset that I seemed to have ruined your new dress? And answer honestly, please."
You look down at your dress. You don't see any tears or stains. Just some slight dampness, "I wouldn't say you've ruined it, Lord Kent. I honestly don't believe I'd need a new dress since I won't be replacing this one."
"Very well. I apologize for not paying attention," he gives a bow.
"Thank you, my Lord. I apologize as well," you curtsey. You mouth, 'Thank you' to him and he nods.
"Aaaww your dress!" Keeley appears beside you with a pout.
You chuckle, "It's fine, Keeley."
"But you just got this one."
"It was an accident."
"Come on, let's try to dry it off," she takes your hand and guides you away from Lord Kent and your mother.
____________
Jamie, the nice friend that he is, put himself down on your dance card so he can be a buffer for the various men written on your card.
"Having fun?" he asks you with a knowing smirk.
You scowl, "I am not and you know it," you sigh, "But what about you?"
"Oh I'm having loads of fun," he gives you a look and it makes your eyes narrow at him.
"What's that look for?"
"Well, don't know if you've noticed, but a certain viscount has been looking at you a lot tonight."
"Who?"
"Lord Grumpy Face. When I turn us, just look over my shoulder and you'll see," Jamie turns you 180 degrees and you're facing the other direction. You look over his shoulder and your eyes meet Lord Kent's. His gaze doesn't waver, even when Jamie spins you and lifts you in the air for a moment.
You snort, "He must be admiring his handy work considering what he did with my dress."
"You keep telling yourself that, darling."
"He hates me."
"Don't seem that way," Jamie spins you around and the song ends. You all clap for the orchestra and Jamie leads you towards the beverage table where Keeley is waiting and watching.
"Have you noticed that Lord Kent keeps watching you?" she asks and Jamie smiles.
"I said the same thing."
"So I'm not hallucinating then?"
Jamie shakes his head at his love, "Not at all. Looks like Lord Grumpy Gramps has a soft spot for our new debutante."
You roll your eyes and groan, "Both of you, stop it. You're acting childish." You take Keeley's glass and down its contents. You hand it back to her and say, "I'm stepping out for air."
You make your way outside to the Ruthford's gardens. You like coming out here, remembering how you and Amelia Ruthford used to play hide and seek in the hedge maze.
You sit at the fountain near its entrance. You let the breeze cool off your body. You're playing with a loose thread on your glove when you here someone clearing their throat.
"Lord Kent," you immediately stand to curtsey.
He shakes his head, "Please, stop that. I hate it when people do that."
You smirk, "Good. Because I hate doing it," you plop back onto the fountain's edge.
Lord Kent slowly approaches the fountain, sitting a small distance from you, "Are you alright?"
"I'm just tired of all of this and I haven't even been out to society for long. I'm tired of the dancing, the socialization. I just want to be home, reading, or spending time with Cece. I want to be my own person, not some...cow being offered up to the highest bidder." You chuckle, shaking your head, "I'm sorry."
"No, no. Don't be. I like this side of you. I don't hear many women talking so freely and openly when they're around me. It's...nice."
You feel nervous. Being in Lord Kent's proximity again after what transpired earlier.
"I didn't expect you to be here," he says, filling the silence.
You sigh, "I didn't expect to be here either, but mother forced me to go. She says I need to take every opportunity to find a potential suitor."
"Any prospects?"
"None, just like the other balls before. Not that I'm actually paying attention to any of them." you get to your feet and move towards the hedge maze, "Have you been in one of these, Lord Kent?"
He follows you, stopping at the entrance and looking up at the high grown hedges, "Can't say I have. You?"
"Only this one. Plenty of times. I'd come here a lot to play with the Ruthford's daughter, Amelia. At first, it took forever for us to solve it. Lord Ruthford would have to come find us. But the more we did it, the more we remembered."
"Do you still remember?"
You look at him with a mischievous grin, "Guess we'll find out." You giggle as you rush inside, taking sharp turns.
"Y/N! Wait!" Lord Kent cries out for you as he heads into the maze. Already, he's lost you.
"This is stupid!"
"No it's not! It's fun! Ever had fun, Lord Kent? Or are you like all the boring Lords here?" your voice is near but not as close as Lord Kent thinks.
"Is there a short cut to this?" Lord Kent asks.
"Not at all. Lord Ruthford loves puzzles and hates cheaters."
"Fuck," Lord Kent curses and you tap him on the shoulder, startling him, "Fuck!"
You snicker, "Not very appropriate language to have around a lady, my Lord."
He looks at you completely unamused, "Get me out of here."
You roll your eyes, "Fine, You have no sense of adventure or fun, do you?"
"None."
"I feel sorry for you future wife," you mutter, leading Lord Kent with very turns, loops and eventually to the exit.
At the exit, you find Keeley and Jamie waiting for you with matching smirks.
"Something wrong?"
"Oh nothing. Have fun?"
"Pft, tried to. Lord Grumpy Gramps couldn't make it very far. Demanded lead him to the exit," you go over and loop your arm with Keeley's, "Is my mother looking for me?"
"No, but Mason Stanton is. He's next on your dance card, I believe?"
You groan, "Can I feign illness?"
"You did that the last time," Jamie says.
You look back around towards the entrance of the haze, spotting the fountain, "I got it." You pick up your skirt and starting running towards the fountains.
"What? What's happening?!" Keeley cries out after you.
You stop at the fountain's edge, looking over your shoulder to your friends and Lord Kent.
"Oh now your dress will definitely be ruined!"
You sit at the edge and squeal when you lean back, falling into the fountain.
You friends and Lord Kent rush over to you, watching as you make a big scene, "Oh no! My dress is ruined and I'm all wet! My night is over!"
Keeley was shaking her head while Jamie tried to stifle his laughter. Lord Kent merely stood there, a smirk on his face.
"You're so...odd," he says as he walks over to the fountain's edge, lending a hand out.
You take it and with a grin, pull him in.
Keeley gasps and Jamie bursts out into laughter.
"Y/N!" your mother comes running down from the manor, "What is going on?!" she's fuming.
You put on your best distressed expression, "I was admiring the fountain and I tripped over my skirt and fell in. Lord Kent tried helping me out but fell in as well."
Your mother looks at Keeley and Jamie, who nod in agreement, doing their best to hide their grins.
Your mother sighs, "Well hurry out of there. Don't want you to catch your death."
Lord Kent exits first, drenched to the bone. You try not to pay attention to how his clothes cling to him, showing off his toned body. He holds his hand out as you climb out. You thank him and waddle over to your mother, "We should probably go home now."
"Yes, we should. Come on," she wraps her arms around you, leading you back towards the manor.
Lord Kent, Keeley, and Jamie all remain right where you left them. Jamie pats Lord Kent on the shoulder, "Yeah, I don't think you could handle her, Lord Gramps."
Lord Kent glares at Jamie, growling, "Don't touch me." His attention turning back to your retreating figure.

SessKag Week 2024 Theme Breakdown
*
You'll find the week's prompts here!
*
Day 1
Canon Compliant
Canon compliant fics follow the canon exactly and don't alter the setting or canonical plot events too drastically. An example of a canon compliant fic would be for example a retelling of a specific scene from another character's point of view.
VS
Modern AU
Modern AU is a fic that takes place in a contemporary setting instead of the work's canonical setting. In SessKag, modern AU fics are typically set in modern day Japan. They can either still feature youkai and miko, or be all human AUs as well.
*
Day 2
Canon divergence
Canon divergence fics follow canon up to a point. They take place in the canon setting and may follow the canonical plotline fairly closely, before they began to spin off to their own direction. "What if Kikyo didn't die?" "What if Kagome never went back to the Feudal era?" "What if Kagome met Sesshoumaru first?" are all types of canon divergent fic scenarios.
VS
Historical AU
A fic that takes place in an alternative setting that's in a different time period than the canonical setting. For SessKag, this could be anything any other time period than Sengoku era and up to the 1990s. SessKag in Heian era? Meiji era? Regency England? Any other time is a fair game.
*
Day 3
Missing Episode
Missing episode, or a missing scene fic, is canon compliant fic that is set between specific canon events, but it is a moment that's never actually shown to the audience.
VS
Fusion AU
Fusion AUs are types of crossovers, where you take the plot and/or setting of Fandom 1 and the characters from Fandom 2 and mash it all up. If you see a fic described as "SessKag Star Wars AU" or "SessKag Pride and Prejudice AU", those are type of fusion fics.
*
Day 4
Pre-Canon
Pre-canon, or pastfic, is a fic that is set before the events of the canon. It could be a flashback or delve into the character's backstory.
VS
Fantasy/Scifi AU
Fantasy or Scifi AU could be any kind of AU that incorporates fantasy or scifi elements in it. It could be a fairy tale retelling, some kind of a Isekai scenario, a Fae/Werewolf/Vampire AU or a zombie apocalypse.
*
Day 5
Canon Reunion
Broadly, this could mean any canonical reunion scene. With SessKag, though, the type of canon divergent modern era reunion fics where Sesshoumaru and Kagome meet again in modern day after Kagome never returns to the Feudal era are popular, so I had those in mind when I chose this theme.
VS
All human AU
All human AU is an AU in which the characters that are not human in the canon (e.g. Sesshoumaru) are human. High school or College AUs are a popular type of an all human AU. An all human AU does not have to be set in a modern day, however.
*
Day 6
Post Canon
Post canon or a futurefic is a fic that takes place after the canon has ended, usually several years later.
VS
Royalty AU
Royalty AU is a type of an AU story in which one or several characters are a member of a royal family. Whether the story takes place in a historical, fantasy or contemporary setting is up to the writer. Tropes that go hand in hand with this type of AU are arranged marriage or bodyguard fics, for example.

Note
re: 2023 new releases. hope you're ready for a long message because there were a lot.
hot new releases/things that were relatively popular
He Who Drowned The World, Shelley Parker Chan (Chinese mythological historical, very gay, very stabby a la Baru Cormorant. Book 2 of 2. A particular favorite of mine from this year)
Witch King, Martha Wells (New fantasy book by author of murderbot fame. I didn't actually click with this one but I'd be remiss to leave it off)
House With Good Bones, T Kingfisher (Southern gothic rose horror by the very talented Ursula Vernon)
Translation State, Ann Leckie (high sf alien horror regency romance. Wheeeeee. I had a lot of fun reading this. You can read it as a standalone, but you get deeper context if you've read the ancillary justice series, also highly recommended)
Will of the Many, James Islington (futuristic roman empire aesthetic rigged murder school. Not precisely good but appallingly catchy, I read all six hundred pages in pretty much one sitting. If you liked red rising you'll like this, if you hated red rising you will Not)
OH YEAH THE ACTUAL NEW MURDEBOT NOVEL (System Collapse)
A Power Unbound, Freya Marske (book 3 of 3, magic alt edwardian romances with murder. This is more romance proper but it's about equal with the action plot and Marske is very good. I don't think you've read these so you'd have to start at book 1)
Some Desperate Glory, Emily Tesh (The book that absolutely knocked my socks off, my pick for the best sff release of the year. I forget if I've already told you about this one)
Starling House, Alix Harrow (Southern gothic house drama. Similar feel to Ninth House or The Book of Night)
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, Shannon Chakraborty (Divorced lady pirate adventure-drama a la Arabian Nights.)
Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, Heather Fawcett (Charming, heavily fairy tale trope themed, vaguely reminiscent of the Lady Trent books)
more obscure new releases from this year that I thought were cool, but not in the Hot New Reads You Can't Miss Because Everyone's Read Them category
Under Fortunate Stars, Ren Hutchings (sf timey wimey space shenanigans with aliens. Immensely cool premise.)
Small Miracles, Olivia Atwater (fallen angel sent to tempt a too good mortal. Extremely charming)
The King Is Dead, Naomi Libicki (vaguely persian flavored fealty romance, very heavy to the fealty. Original, thorny, and intriguing)
The Deep Sky, Yume Kitasei (What if we terribly traumatized everyone going on a generation ship by making them go to viciously competitive boarding school together and then act surprised when a murder mystery occurs. Heads up that it's more interested in the human drama than the SF worldbuilding)
The Saint of Bright Doors, Vajra Chandrasekera (early modern fantasy world anti-imperialism fever dream narrated by a cult survivor. Brilliantly written, spectacularly original, one of the best books I read this year)
Things for 2024, content warning for being (obviously) things I haven't read and thus without quality control
The Warm Hands of Ghosts, Katherine Arden
The Familiar, Leigh Bardugo
The Dead Cat Tail Assassins, P Djeli Clark
Long Live Evil, Sarah Rees Brennan
Goddess of the River, Vaishnavi Patel
The Woods All Black, Lee Mandelo
Exordia, Seth Dickinson
A Sorceress Comes To Call, T Kingfisher
Running Close To The Wind, Alexandra Rowland
Wow tumblr just lets me keep writing words. I didn't think they let me have this many in asks. Oh, and pro tip-- keep an eye out for tordotcom's most anticipated upcoming books for the first six months of 2024. They should be publishing it within the next week or so and I always add masses of books to my tbr from there.
oh holy crap, thanks!! I'll have to check these out!
thoughts on a few of em:
He Who Drowned The World - still have to read She Who Became the Sun lol but hopefully I'll get to em next year!
Witch King - Martha Wells has been recced by like All my sci-fi mutuals now lmao I REALLY gotta get into her!
House With Good Bones - THIS ONE IS ACTUALLY ON MY SHELF!! I just didn't fucking read it this year whoops. Very excited for new Kingfisher
Starling House - I was on the fence about this one since I really didn't like Once and Future Witches, but those comparisons give me hope! I'll add it to the library list!
Some Desperate Glory and Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries are 2/3 of the books published in 2023 that I actually managed to read (the 3rd is The Woman in Me lmao), I can't remember if you recc'd Some Desperate Glory, but it was SOOOOOOOO GOOD OMFG
Small Miracles - my aunt has been trying to convince me to read Atwater for quite a while, I'll have to give this one a try!
The Saint of Bright Doors - I have this one on hold!! Saw a post for it a week or so ago and it sounds absolutely delightful!
The Familiar - SO SO EXCITED for this one! I hope Bardugo is maybe...slowly....extricating herself from the Grishaverse and going to write more books not related to it... (not that they're all bad, I loved the Six of Crows duology, I'm just not into it anymore and I reeeealllly like her adult books lol)
Running Close To The Wind - oh yay new Rowland! I still haven't read her last book (the one with the guy on the cover who looked EXACTLY like my boss to the point where it became an Office Meme that [Boss] Is A Gay Romance Cover Model, still meaning to get a UK version of it but haven't yet) but I'll have to look this one up!

Written for: 2020 Captain America/Iron Man Big Bang

Written for: Cap-IronMan Bingo
Summary: In 14th century Scotland, Steve is a child with an imaginary friend that lives in a nearby river, the site of many drownings and horrific discoveries. His Nan claims it to be the work of a kelpie. Steve doesn’t believe her of course. Kelpies are a myth, old wives tales to keep children from playing near swiftly-moving streams and young women from entertaining the company of handsome strangers. However, as he grows, Steve realizes that the young man in the water may not be quite as imaginary nor as innocuous as he once believed. For the Cap-IronMan Bingo 2019 Round 2 – AU: Fairy Tale Creatures.

Written for: 2017 Captain America/Iron Man Holiday Exchange

Let Us Not Forget This by citsiurtlanu (@citsiurtlanu) (Iron Man Noir | General Audiences | Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings | 36,040 words)
Written for: Captain America/Iron Man Reverse Bang 2017
Summary: Steve Rogers knew, knows, will know Tony Stark, the adventurer, the scientist, the futurist. And Tony Stark - well, he's not really fond of the idea of this Captain America fellow being assigned to tag along as he, Rhodey, Pepper, and Jarvis race to find a powerful relic before the Nazis do, but he just has to go with it. What he doesn't - and can't - realize is how deeply Cap is tied into his life in ways he can barely even understand. Also available as a podfic read by DuendeVerde4 (@duendeverde4)
Before the Darkness Swallows You by Veldeia (@veldeia) (616 | Mature | Graphic Depictions Of Violence | 30,837 words)
Written for: Captain America/Iron Man Reverse Bang 2016
Summary: Steve was gone. Tony was all alone in the dark, the blackness of the damp, rock-walled corridor only occasionally broken by the fluttering fluorescent lamps in the ceiling. He wasn’t afraid of the dark. An abandoned mine was by no means the scariest environment he’d ended up in. Still, he’d have been crazy not to be afraid of what lurked in these shadows.
The Unlikely Wingman by Sineala (@sineala) (616 | General Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply | 1,074 words)
Written for: Cap-IronMan Bingo
Summary: Clint doesn't see why he should have to follow Captain America's orders. But he also doesn't see why Captain America should have to sit around looking miserably lonely, either.
Think of This as Solving Problems (That Should Never Have Occurred) by Sineala (@sineala) (616 | Teen And Up Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply | 35,216 words)
Written for: 2015 Captain America/Iron Man Holiday Exchange
Summary: No one knows Tony is Iron Man. Then Tony gets amnesia, and literally no one knows Tony is Iron Man.
Got You Under My Skin by BlossomsintheMist (@blossomsinthemist) (Ults | Explicit | No Archive Warnings Apply | 26,115 words)
Written for: Captain America/Iron Man Reverse Bang 2014
Summary: “I’d be happy to show you a good time,” Tony said, smiling a little obscurely, Steve thought, as if to himself, but still with that warm, knowing look, affectionate and oddly fond, “any time you want.” Steve Rogers goes to Tony Stark's birthday party. Things progress from there, with a lot of flirtiness leading to propositions, and propositions leading to, well, what comes next, and Steve isn't even sure what he wants after that. Set in the Marvel Ultimate Universe, and written for the 2014 Cap_Ironman Reverse Big Bang. Art by wiredoll, here.

Bring & Buy at Tokyo Boom
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On November the 12th my local lolita community organised a bring & buy event and I was part of the working team! A bring & buy is a specialized kind of flea market: you drop off the things you want to sell with us (the lolita association) and we sell the items. There's a small fee (1€) for each item you drop off. At the end you collect your money for the sold items or get your items back (if they haven't sold). The small fee goes towards our association, we use it towards events.
I knew we were announcing our upcoming Teaparty at the bring & buy event (will be on June 8th 2024), which will be called "Royal Symphony of Roses". This highwaist-skirt of mine is called "The Empress' New Clothes" (after the fairy tale) and also has a lots of roses in it's print, so I decided to wear this skirt in honour of our upcoming teaparty!
I had lots of fun working at the b & b event and it also was a great success! The owners of Tokyo Boom (the restaurant) were also happy and we will hold further events there! ^_^
I bought two gorgeous headpieces for myself. The black one was an immediate must buy and I pondered a bit about buying the white one (because I have no similar black ones, but vaguely similar light-coloured ones), but then my friend offered me a discount and I couldn't resist any longer on the white one!
[id]Picture 1: A mirrored picture of Amy (me), posing in a chair in front of a big Daruma statue. Amy is a young, fat, white woman with glasses and long brown hair worn in two long braids. She's looking very relaxed and laid-back in this picture, as well as confident. She's leaning back in the chair and has her feet crossed over, which you can only see from the angle of her brown-and-gold accentuated boots. She's wearing a thrifted soft pink top and a soft pink cardigan with buttons over it on the top. The cardigan is tucked into her high waist rock, that's also very light in colour. The background colour of the skirt's fabric is off-white/beige and it's adorned with many flowers and portraits of vaguely regency looking women and men in uniform. There are also ships and letters scattered throughout the print. The print seems like a love story, set at sea. The skirt is finished with pale pink tulle lace with flowers on it. The grey tights don't totally match, but sometimes we have to work with what we have.
Picture 2 & 3: Two very similar close-up selfies of two friends: left is Amy (me) and right is my friend @bright-eyes-hope. My friend has an arm over my shoulder and we're both smiling at the camera.
Amy is a young, fat, white woman with glasses and long brown hair. She's wearing an off-white flower crown, further decorated with pink flowers. She's wearing a soft pink cardigan. My friend is a young, thing, white woman with glassed and short red hair in a kind of pixie cut. They're wearing a black bow in their hair and a black hoodie with cats on it.
Picture 4: A picture of the two lovely headpieces (black and white), that I bought at the bring & buy. Laying above them is the flower crown I wore for this event. The flower crown is offwhite and I further decorated it with single pink roses (to match the pink lace of my skirt). See picture 5 for a description of the black headpiece, as that one also shows it better/in clearer detail. The white headpiece is by Triple Fortune and features one big white bow with "Triple Fortune" written in gold, as well as multiple white roses and decorative pearls. Multiple asymmetric white veils drape down from the headpiece. The black and white headpieces are both so lovely!
Picture 5: A close-up of a lovely round headpiece by Atelier Pierrot. It's made from black lace, with black roses and black little satin ribbon bows around the rim. Some white pearls give the headpiece a bit of sparkle and further glamour.
Picture 6: The unmirrored original version of picture 1![/id]

ARC REVIEW: Confounding Oaths by Alexis Hall
Tumblr media
4/5. Releases 8/27/24.
vibes: Shakespeare x Jane Austen, a man in uniform, WHIMSY
Heat Index: 2/10
The Basics:
Mr. John Caesar is escorting his sister Mary through the marriage mart--avoiding his parents' own desires to see him settle down, because, like, that's not John's goal. Things get a bit more complicated when Mary accidentally ends up with an evil fairy godmother, which leads John to work with Orestes James, a war hero who's ready to leap into action. (Perhaps in more ways than one.) As they attempt to rescue Mary, Orestes and John grow close; but even if they do live through this, is John ready to commit wholeheartedly to anyone?
The Review:
Another fun, whimsical, magically-narrated fairy tale/Jane Austen romcom from Alexis Hall! These books are quite unique, to be honest. Not only in terms of the narration--which is delightful--from Robin, a literal omnipresent immortal, but just... the world? Early in the book, we have a discussion about Jane Austen fandom and writing fanfic? From a couple of Regency-era girlies? It's so fun, so lighthearted, so completely itself.
And in general, Alexis can always write the fuck out of a book. The way he shifts between styles is honestly so impressive to me. Dude can turn a phrase, and that makes his books just... a pleasure to read for the sake of reading. The uniqueness of these particular novels only adds to it. (Do you need to read Mortal Follies before this one? Not exactly, but it might help; and to be real, you should just read it anyway, as it's a good work.)
Where I will say this book does fall a little behind MF for me is that the romance feels a bit less prominent. This is probably because John and Orestes are essentially trying to save someone for much of the book, whereas the last novel had more direct peril for the heroine. So it does feel a little more "save the day forward" versus "romance forward". Not that there isn't romance. There is, and it's lovely, and I also really liked that Alexis gave them breathing room and didn't act as if these were two guys lacking life experience simply because they were queer in a homophobic society.
Speaking of, both Orestes and John are Black (John is biracial) and this fantasy world of Hall's doesn't just throw racism out the door. It's not heavy, but it is thoughtful... and comes with a rather snarky remark alluding to the deplorable treatment of a certain duchess. And I did appreciate that. I don't know if Alexis was responding to some of the... less than perfect choices of a certain big time Regency romance show. I don't want to say he was. However, I did find this book's observations much more interesting and insightful.
The Sex:
This is a closed door romance--sex is definitely alluded to, but because our narrator is a third party, he doesn't just sit there and perv on everyone. Which makes sense. I support that choice. Alexis Hall is one of the only writers who can make closed door work for me.
All in all, this is a fluffy yet adventurous Regency-ish fantasy romance with a lot of humor, a good bit of sweetness, and a fuckton of wit. It's a good time, as most Alexis Hall books are a good time. Is it my absolute favorite of his? Maybe not, but a good book by Alexis Hall is better than a lot of other people's best books, to be real.
Thanks to NetGalley and Del Rey for providing me with a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

5 Favourite Fics I’ve written
rule: 5 favourite fics you’ve written and pass it on to 5 other writers
____
thank you @cursedvibes for the tag. it took me a while to do it because i don't really like the fics i've written, idk, writing for me is dealing with my adhd brain and the results never really make me happy they just give me relief. i think part of it is that i despise my writing style, the language, i have no turn of phrase. i find it unpleasant to read. but at the same time i like the process of planning a story and its setting. so the fics i will list are those which i really enjoyed making up a setting for, which i think have fun world building and/or plots/intrigues. these are from oldest to newest.
____
Fairytale kingdom, nightmare castle
it's my first fic ever, it's actually huge (157,059 words) but unfinished, i want to get back to it but it needs 2 action filled chapters and i'm scared of that. it's actually a killugon fic with canary as the third protagonist, hxh power system but in an empire/regency inspired aesthetic. it's very plot driven, world building heavy, has scenes from many povs. it has a courtly/political intrigue.
rating E
Levels
this fic is special to me because i made a friend through it. but also it's one of two fics on this list that are a vibe... like it kinda has a plot but it's mostly a vibe and to some extent a vague musing about the hxh story line plus a tribute to Blame! aesthetic. oh it's a killugon. it's also my one and only attempt at horror, it's not really scary or creepy, i can't do mood writing to save my life.
rating T
Conventional Wisdom
this fic is also basically a vibe, it's a fic i wrote during the pandemic and it's about loneliness and craving connection. it's also a killugon. this one is an urban fantasy au, gon's a magical creature killua is a human. i didn't set out to write them both ace in this fic, it just kinda turned out like that.
rating T
Trapped
this is me going against all my instincts honestly. i usually dislike fairy tale retellings and here i'm kinda writing one. granted i made it my comfort zone so it's as not fairytalesque as i could. but it has the trappings of the beauty and the beast. it's world building and plot heavy. it's a sukuita fic, also a pairing i never expected myself to like, even less to write for.
rating E
The Only One
this is another first one for me, when i really consciously and purposefully wrote a character to be quite ooc. i just needed that. it's also extremely tropey, royalty au, harem au (like it takes place in a harem, there isn't a harem of lovers to choose from), there are fabrics and linguistics, there's a palace intrigue. it's an author pleaser, i wrote it to make myself feel good. it's a sukuita fic, sweet and angsty.
rating E
____
Tagging, but only if you feel like it: @subdee, @voidcat-senket, @yuujispinkhair, @canzie-gumm, @ishouldgetatumbler

march books
the puppets of spelhurst 3/5 (not dicamillos strongest work i feel but i LOVE the illustrator)
the benefits of being an octopus 5/5 (deals SO well and bravely with the realities of growing up poor in the south as an eldest daughter. i wish i could give this book to every kid in a 90 mile radius of me.)
princess floralinda and the forty-flight tower 4/5 (LOVE a messed up fairy tale and this one was clever and gripping and made you THINK and i only wish it had been longer/we got to see some of the practical consequences of the end!!!!!)
maskerade 4/5 (pratchett is always a delight!)
every heart a doorway 5/5 (the first book i ever read to give me the word asexual AND a perfect 'what psychological torment would have plagued the pevensies, Actually' insight. NO NOTES)
a nobleman's guide to seducing a scoundrel 4/5 (it's hard to beat a kj charles and a re-read was even better!)
the skin and its girl ? DNF (i wanted to like this one! a fantastic cover and premise and i've been looking for more Palestinian books/authors but the text held you at such a remove that it felt impossible to feel anything for the characters or about the location! frustrating!)
the clementine complex 3.5/5 (a very fun and quick read with some distinctive mortimer-isms!)
one night in hartswood ? DNF (sorry to this man but i just couldn't get into this! might be a case of wrong time on my part as there was nothing wrong with the prose or characters)
life ceremony 3.5/5 (fascinatingly creepy and...intricate? the one about the reusable human parts will live in my brain forever i'm pretty sure. ty kai for the rec!)
clover hendry's day off 3.5/5 (this was a fun and pretty quick romp of a book! definitely recommend if you just want something light and breezy)
an accident of stars 2/5 (disappointing as i LOVED his other books but this one could have benefited quite a bit from a good editor as the ending left me feeling let down)
the sunlit man 4/5 (i cant help it!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love a brandon sanderson cosmere book! and WHAT a book. is it worth reading thousands upon thousands of pages for a two word pay off? .........if you're me: yes)
the ladies re-write the rules ? DNF (IRRITATING. stop imposing 21st century morals and patterns of behaviour on regency characters and then compounding the problem by having them GIVE UP their hard-won agency just to get married and lose it all anyway!)
mystic and rider 4/5 (LOVED this. a good old fashioned high fantasy adventure with a, wonder of wonders, actually well written and compelling romantic relationship. ty jamie for the rec!)
mislaid in parts half-known 5/5 (you've gotta cry. you just gotta.)
vita nostra 2/5 (if you ever want to re-live your worst scholastic/academia driven years as a living dream over and over absolutely read this book. beautiful prose and beautifully translated!)
the hollow places 4/5 (HELL yeah yet another author who knows how to take the 'wood between the worlds' premise and go OFF with it.)
the craft of love 3/5 (very sweet and sedately tender novella! love to see a well-researched and common-place (in the traditional sense) love story feat. queer people)
peter darling 2.5/5 (maybe if i had been obsessed with captain hook as a kid like this author clearly was i would have been more into this but. for some reason i'm so incredibly protective of Neverland for no reason at all that i resent any betrayal of it even though the book was absolutely fine and in fact far better than most 'sequels', authorized or not)
that's it so far! if you've read any of these please let me know your thoughts!

Cinderswift (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
When the PattyCake fellas set out to retell the classic rags-to-riches fairy tale of Cinderella, they turned to the music of Taylor Swift. Her songs' themes of overcoming detractors and self-doubt, learning from painful situations, and striving for a better life were a perfect fit for the story's narrative.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals – Cinderswift
performers: Leah Lowman (Cinderella); Matthew "Bucky" Buckner (Prince Charming / additional vocals); Andrea Stack (Lady Tremaine / additional vocals); Olivia Adkins (Anastasia Tremaine); Melanie Stringer (Drizella Tremaine); Rachel Copeland (fairy godmother); Michael Navarro (royal crier / coachman); Hannah Laird, Hannah Juliano, Layne Stein, & Tony Wakim (additional vocals)
original songs / performer: all songs by Taylor Swift — "Mean"; [0:32] "Style"; [0:55] "Shake It Off"; [1:30] "Bad Blood", feat. Kendrick Lamar; [1:50] "22"; [2:47] "Wildest Dreams"; [3:40] "I Knew You Were Trouble"; [3:55] "Love Story"
written by: "Mean" by Taylor Swift; "Style" by Taylor Swift, Max Martin, Karl "Shellback" Schuster, & Ali Payami; "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift, Max Martin, & Karl "Shellback" Schuster; "Bad Blood" by Taylor Swift, Max Martin, Karl "Shellback" Schuster, & Kendrick Lamar; "22" by Taylor Swift, Max Martin, & Karl "Shellback" Schuster; "Wildest Dreams" by Taylor Swift, Max Martin, & Karl "Shellback" Schuster; "I Knew You Were Trouble" by Taylor Swift, Max Martin, & Karl "Shellback" Schuster; "Love Story" by Taylor Swift
arranged by: Layne Stein & Tony Wakim
release date: 14 January 2017
My favorite bits:
Leah singing ♫ "You can take me do-o-own" ♫ on a descending run as she crouches to reach the tea set
Andrea's absolute poise and stillness as Lady Tremaine
the tiny mouse chorus 🐁 (Ah, so those are the additional vocals.)
all the ladies' 90s-tastic ballgowns
those crunchy minor chords during "Bad Blood"
Rachel's bouncy, trilling vibratto throughout "22"
combining the 1950 animated dance sequence with some of the Regency-era steps from Taylor's "Love Story" video during "Wildest Dreams"
transforming "I Knew You Were Trouble" from a rueful reflection into a sinister threat
Bucky and Leah's lovely harmonies in the final song

Trivia:
The opening dedication "For Dori" refers to Layne's youngest daughter, Doris, who was about six months old at the time of this video's publication.
This video was filmed at the Luxemore Grande Estate in Winter Park, which is primarily used for weddings and other large events. The venue coordination was handled by Jaimz Dillman, who had played Sarah Sanderson in PattyCake's "Hocus Heathens" Halloween video, and has continued to feature in their projects.
Leah has reprised her role as Cinderella in several episodes of PattyCake's "Princess Academy" series, as well as their "Disney Girls Like You" video in 2019, and their original piece "If the Shoe Fits" in 2023.
According to Bucky, there were many outtakes during the dance sequence because "the boots were big on me and that dress was ginormous".
The guys had known Bucky for many years prior to casting him in this project. He'd played the Wolfman opposite Tony's Dracula in the "Beetlejuice Revue" show at Universal Studios, and joined 4:2:Five as their new baritone when Layne switched over to vocal percussion in 2004.
A fan combined the audio from this project with footage from the 1950 Disney animated film to create a fantastic fanvid.
Many of the songs in this video were also later included in PattyCake's villainous Halloween offering for the year, "Look What You Made Me Brew".
Layne and Tony had previously sung a portion of "Bad Blood" in VoicePlay's "Aca Top 10 — Summer Hits 2015" countdown.
"I Knew You Were Trouble" was the foundation for VoicePlay's 2013 "Trouble" mashup music video with Rachel Potter, which led to them competing on The Sing-Off.
The dancers in the original "Shake It Off" music video include several of their fellow reality show veterans from So You Think You Can Dance — Phillip "PacMan" Chbeeb (s.5), Du-Shaunt "Fik-Shun" Stegall (s.10 winner), Jonathan "Legacy" Perez (s.6), & Melissa Sandvig (s.5).

Hi! I hope you don't mind me asking, but I've been interested in getting into Dimension 20 for a while, but with all the campaigns they did already, I find it a bit hard to understand which one to start with, so I thought I'd ask you, as you seem to know your stuff ! So I was wondering if there was a chronological order to some campaigns, if there was one you advised to start with, and where I could watch it. I hope this doesn't bother you, have a nice day ! ♥
This doesn't bother me at all, I love questions like this! And this is truly one of the worst weeks of my life, so thanks for the distraction <3
Short answer: d20 is divided into short and long seasons, long with the main cast (brennan dm'ing for lou, emily, murph, zac, ally, and siohban) and short sidequest seasons with different players, mostly dm'ed by Brennan but also with guest dms! You need a monthly/yearly subscription to dropout.tv to watch, but it's truly the best subscription service in my life, $6/month or 60/yr, with d20 putting out a 2 hour episode every week plus a half hour talk show in Adventuring Party (in addition to their other stellar comedy shows, Game Changer and Make Some Noise, especially). If you just want to dip your toes in and see if you like it, you can watch the first seasons of Fantasy High or The Unsleeping City for free on youtube
Long answer! Fantasy High is still to this day my favorite d20 property, it's teen adventurers at an adventuring academy in a sort of magical realism world. It's extremely funny and the first season was the first season of d20 so most of them are learning 5e after switching over from 3.5, although a few had no previous dnd experience. The second season is probably my favorite season of any tv show ever, and it's a great introduction to the main cast. Those characters will probably always be the closest to my heart in d20, they're all perfect to me.
The Unsleeping City is an urban fantasy series set in a magical New York that is also very good! There's again two seasons, and they are both well worth watching. The second season is again even better than the first, imo.
If you're getting into it because of Matt's season next month, then his The Ravening War series is a prequel to another main cast season, A Crown of Candy. ACOC is the biggest outlier in d20, which isn't ONLY a comedy show, but comedy is very much at the core of d20, but ACOC is a very, very emotionally heavy show. I loved it, but I have also never rewatched it since it took such a mental toll. It's a very high stakes, inter-party conflict, no resurrection magic world, and the entire cast had backup characters prepared in case of character death. It's very good, but not the best example of what the rest of d20 is like. If you've seen EXU Calamity, it is similar tonewise, just a longer campaign.
Then there's the two most recent main cast campaigns. A Starstruck Odyssey is a screwball scifi series set in a world created by Brennan's mom, Elaine Lee, who wrote the original Starstruck comics/play! It's very much a labor of love from him, and it was the first season the main cast filmed in person post-pandemic and the unhinged energy is truly off the charts. It was extremely good and would be a great starting point, no knowledge of the original Starstruck is necessary.
The most recent campaign is Neverafter, which is horror-inspired, but still very much a comedy. It's fairy tale inspired and I'm very sad it just ended because it was so good, although the ending was perfect.
Then there are the sidequests! My personal favorites of those are Mice and Murder, a murder mystery series set in an animal-populated turn of the century England, where the cast were all collegehumor alum so it was very funny and I love murder mysteries and think Brennan did an excellent job at it, and would frankly love another murder mystery season from him. A Court of Fey and Flowers from Aabria is another favorite, a fey-regency romance mashup that was absolutely perfect. The Seven is an all ladies/nonbinary season (dm'd by Brennan) that's technically a spinoff of Fantasy High so I would recommend watching it first, but also it stands alone if you don't mind spoilers for the main seasons.
So!! That was a very long answer, hopefully it was some help to you. You could really pick any season and be fine, and I hope you end up falling in love with d20! My personal recommendations would be to start with either Fantasy High or Starstruck, since I think they're the best examples of what the show is like overall. Good luck! Feel free to let me know what you think :)

Steph the excitement monster is back:)
I need you!
But first I truly hope this finds you well and happy and not so uncomfortably hot like we have it here in Germany.
But back to my " problem"
I always needed my boys in their natural environment and not outside the story BUT I remembered two pictures last night and suddenly felt the need to read the
" Performance in a leading role" series.
I started it and I'm in love all over again.
Do you know more AU Fics for me?
Please 🙏
But no Vampires or Penguins 😀
I really can't wait to dive into a new part of the Johnlock famdom.
Lots of love and sorry for my euphoria but it's hard to contain myself right now.
