Ok so I got nothing done yesterday except the project update and filing my nails. In my defense, the novel-length fic I was reading was really good and brought me lots of joy.

I have spent the past half an hour working on my own fic so that I could get it out of my system, though this has made me even more excited to work on it and I hope I can keep that excitement up this evening. With any luck I'll be able to edit this chapter and post it tonight!

Also in my defense of yesterday's zero output, I started looking for a new job, which I do every once in a while when the ennui gets to be too much.

My thought is that if I transition away from being a software engineer and go to being a product manager I would have all the same bullshit I'm dealing with now but with none of the inferiority anguish I feel from being a shit programmer. I have a few options in this regard:

Apply for a product manager role I don't necessarily want just to have the interviewing practice and see if I can get such a job.

Attempt to transition to a similar role at my current company to see if I even like it.

Put my nose to the grindstone and become a better programmer even though every bone in my body is screaming that while I am capable of this, I do not want to do this.

At the moment I want to do option 2 though I suppose I should also make more of an effort at option 3. Regardless I think I'm giving myself until next March for a few reasons:

I don't want to give back my new work laptop and it will officially become mine in March 2024.

All of my stock options will have vested by then and I will have had the opportunity to exercise as much of them as possible (need to get on this this year actually so taxes are less of a headache).

I will have gone through another review cycle which, according to my last one, means I might get promoted if I get my ass in gear since the only thing holding me back is how slowly I deliver completed projects, a fixable thing.

The length of time will give me a chance to "design my work life" (as per that book of the same name that I will be going through) and see, in the most risk-averse way possible, if I even like the work required of a product manager. To that end there are a few things I can start doing now that I know of without even going through that book's work sheets, such as attending my working group's assessment meeting tomorrow and maybe checking out the work done by the current product team, of which I am not 100% certain that we even have one as such. All of this I will record in the incredible Japanese notebook/bullet journal with my incredible Japanese pen (pictured above) that I bought on my work trip to Tokyo two weeks ago (just another thing to be grateful for about this job - I get to go on awesome trips!)

Unlike the rest of the cinematic hellfire club, January Jones as Emma Frost physically embodied the comic character. In addition, she exuded the ice queen persona to the letter. So, imagine my incredulity at the negative reaction most of First Class fandom had towards the actress. Granted, these are the same people with the tendency to think Famke Jennson did more for Jean Grey than cement her as the most boring, unfaithful murderess in cinema. Seriously, Lifetime's casting agents do better on $2 TV budgets.

As with all the actors, I never previously knew of January Jones, including her all too fitting role on Mad Men. While I admit to not having the comics etched into my memory, I do know that Emma is a cold master manipulator. Stylish, classy, confident, and always working towards her own agenda. Her femininity is not a hindrance but a valuable asset. The 90s animated version of her illustrated this well. Yet, comic Emma also has this underlining nurturing side and resentment of homo sapiens for what they did to her young mutant hellions. Another 90s gem, the Generation X tv movie, showed that part of her flawlessly. FC focused on her darker side, but January Jones displayed great range and potential. She was introduced at the same time as Rose Byrne's Moira Mactaggert and with less screen time, January stood out. Rose Byrne is a capable actress and I still kept forgetting Moira was even there.

There are problems with Emma, but that falls on the writers, not January. Yes, Emma is traditionally the sexy femme fatale of the hellfire club, but what was up with her playing pet wench to Sebastian Shaw? Waiting around in an easily escapable government cell until the next mutant man makes her an offer. Even in the 90s *animated* show, she wouldn't let herself get reduced to some replaceable sex toy. She's a queen, for crying out loud!

Obviously, this direction with Emma was part of the production team's very shallow attempt to address 1960s sexism. So, a regular homo sapien like Moira can climb the ladder of the CIA but the powerful mental mutant basically serves as a live-in hooker? Keep in mind that Emma has two advantages over Charles. She doesn't have a moral code as a telepath and she packs a secondary mutation. In addition to being durable, sparkly prettiness, her diamond form boosts her combat skills and gives her shielding from other telepaths. What in the world is she doing on minion duty with wind boy and the demon of stinky brimstone poofing? Don't even get me started on the ancient nazi whose sage wisdom concocts a plot to take over the world in a fashion that even actual 1960s comic strip villains would call unforgivably stupid! Slapping on some last-minute insult to injury, Emma ends up joining Shaw's protege. The dude who just found out mutants existed 5 minutes ago and who strapped her to a bed and strangled her barely 2 minutes ago!...

This is the good X-movie, right? *Sigh* yes....

I swear, sexism abounds in pretty much everybody but Charles. No, enjoying the company of women and having a protective nature towards them does not a chauvinist make. As seen with his respect for Moira and inclusion of young girl mutants, Charles does not see women as inferior. If anything, he sees them as the more cherished sex. But look at Shaw, Erik, and these writers. Shaw and Erik are classic predators. They groom with fake charm and flattery to cover their obvious abusive tendencies then recruit women into a harem at best or end them when they become inconvenient at worst.

Regardless, January's portrayal of Emma left such an impression with me that I included her in my on-going series FC inspired. She became the first female mentor of the fledging X-Men, third in rank after Erik and Charles.

That brief moment on the boat in FC when the telepaths crossed minds? Despite Emma being the enemy, Charles' reaction to her was notably different than with the other mutant abilities. When he met Raven, he was gleeful and protective. When he met Angel, he offered her a job with a no-nudity policy. When he sensed Emma, he came off as not only taken aback with captivation but aroused by the female telepath. He was also surprisingly and unashamedly quick to declare he would be of no help to the CIA with her. Maybe it's just me, but it seemed like Charles needed to 'calm himself down' a bit. Hm, I wonder if saving Erik was actually his second reason for plunging into freezing cold water....

Unfortunately, January's potential as Emma would never be realized. Because unfit parents Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg regained full custody of the franchise and killed her. The potent, diamond encased telepath and favorite daughter of one of the wealthiest families in America was murdered completely off-screen. Decide for yourselves if that was more or less dignified than the metal-bending, nazi-hunting son of Abraham-Isaak-and-Jakob being held captive like an incompetent little Hebrew National weenie.

Although, it is reasonable to deduce that homo sapiens stepped up their game after losing an entire CIA department to mutant terrorism. Seriously, Pearl Harbor, 9/11- do you *know* what happens to outside threats that force Americans to cast aside our polarizing politics in the name of patriotism? The same thing that's happened to every one of them. Do not eff with us.

As for Emma, despite FC offering so little, I still walked away with a solid understanding of her character and potential backstory. Why the heck would she go along with Shaw's idiotic endeavour? Between Frost Family fallout and the gruesome loss of her hellions, Emma was plain done with humanity altogether and opted for a lifestyle of apathetic hedonism. It would explain why she seems so content to sit back and watch the world burn in-between chaos-causing career opportunities. Or you can believe- as Matthew Vaughn undoubtedly does- that she's just an unambitious, man-dependent, patriarchy-persecuted rent-a-hoe. Whichever narrative suits your personal agenda.

Wait, I just realized they tried to give Emma's rightful storyline to flippin Raven. Yeah, if Emma spent dofp using her powers and endless financial resources in an earth-scorching vendetta to liberate mutants it would've made actual sense. As someone who worked on mutant teams long before them, she would honestly be a believable foil to Charles and Erik. Maybe even include a chance for Emma to be humanized and redeemed without it costing her life. I know X-movies have a fetish for pointlessly killing off characters, but dare to step out of the box. Emma possibly could've joined Charles to help re-build the X-Men. Even convince Erik to further the mutant cause without destroying national landmarks or whimpering off to Poland. Take some responsibility for her poor choices and attempt to rectify things. But no, don't use the more experienced female mutant known to take part in the X-Men in certain versions. No, utilize Charles Xavier's spoiled, easily influenced kid sister known to be a self-serving villainess and deadbeat mom as the vehicle for your superficial empowerment message. Too bad January didn't land a once-in-a-lifetime leading role in a YA novel series turned film franchise like Jenni Law did.

What would I do if I had to kill a complete stranger in cold blood or else my own family would die? Would I be able to live with myself in either situation?

Would I saw through my own leg with a hacksaw risking shock and bleeding to death in order to escape being chained up in a dungeon where I would die a slow and agonizing death?

What truly interested me however, was watching how simple it was for jigsaw to create a set of circumstances that caused seemingly good people to do evil things that you would NEVER think they were capable of.

A simple post, pic, or video leads to huge arguments, threats, and sometimes, even worse.

Protests are turning violent, monuments are being destroyed, and now people everywhere are walking on eggshells scared to offend someone with an opinion.

People are going to war with each other over masks, race, politics, beliefs, etc. Even the smallest thing seems to push some people over the edge.

Doesn’t it seem like people are turning against each other, and the true nature of many are coming out front and canter for everyone to see?

Could there be an “evil genius mastermind(s)” or “Jigsaw(s)” out there taking these events and using them as a catalyst to have the people in our country turn on each other?

Even if something like this were possible. Why, would anyone want this to happen? Who would want this to happen?

One possible candidate is another country.

If you are reading this and you live in America, I want you to think about something.

The U.S.     is regularly and rightly so called the “Land of the free” and the “Land of     Opportunity.”

There are many other things the U.S. leads the world in but here’s my point. When you are the top dog at something, especially the top dog at something as important as the economy, influence, and money, you better believe others will be gunning for you and trying to overtake you, often by any means possible.

There’s an old saying that goes something like, “The higher you climb the pole, the bigger the target on your back” or “the more your ass is exposed” and I believe there is a lot of truth to this.

Imagine for a second that this were true. To beat the U.S. if you are another country. You can’t just do it face to face. David didn’t fight Goliath in bare knuckled hand to hand combat. The U.S. is full of smart people, the defence/military budget is 100 times larger than any other country, and has been for decades. The only way to win if someone wanted to, would have to be “very strategically.”

If you’ve ever watched the movie “War of the Worlds,” the story is that Aliens that have been living under the ground for thousands of years come up and start killing everyone by the millions. No weapon, missile, or gun can even scratch them, let alone kill them. Just when it seems humanity is about to be wiped out for good and nothing will work. The aliens start dying out. We find that it wasn’t a weapon that did the job, but a virus. A virus harmless to humans, as we have evolved and developed immunity over the centuries, but deadly to them. A microscopic virus caused the Aliens bodies to attack itself leading to their death. Isn’t that fascinating: The Aliens perished, not from an exterior attack, but rather from within.

Another issue that we are dealing with in the U.S. is the fact we are a relatively new country in terms of history and others know this. We don’t have thousands of years of history and tradition that we have built upon. As with most cultures in their early days, ours too was built on conquest, treachery, oppression, and often times brutal savagery. This is not a new concept unique to the U.S.

The difference with the U.S. from other countries however, is that we are much more fragile and so “new,” that many of the wounds of the past still feel fresh to people since our country as a whole only dates back a few hundred years.

Why is all of this important? 

Well, because in my fictional world, these events would make a perfect recipe for an outside country with the ambition to be the largest economy or power in the world to get there, not by conquering us, but rather by having us conquer and destroy ourselves from within. Not to mention it’s much easier to do this than one would think. Given an “event” or “some events” happen that can be used as a catalyst. (AKA Coronavirus, George Floyd, Donald Trump and election time.)

Unlike Jigsaw, who had to create extremely elaborate environments that needed to be well thought out, planned, and executed perfectly with zero room for error, all someone or some group would need to do here is feed the fire that has already started with more fuel.

What’s the fuel? False Harmful Information.

How do you feed the fire?  Spreading False Harmful Information Quickly.

Posting     false negativity on social media where uninformed people will see it,     believe it, and become angry based on misinformation.

Feeding     the anger by sharing anything and as much as possible that which is     relevant to the core of the anger.

I can’t tell you how many so called “facts,” I read, posts I see, and articles I watch that when I just dig a little deeper and do some research, I realize are so totally and completely wrong. But by then it doesn’t matter. The damage has been done. I look at the comments and see that most people are believing it and it has been shared 57,000 times already.

We all know people who get emotional and share things, regardless of whether it is true or not. But have you ever thought or asked yourself. Who first posted it? Where did it originate? What was that person/person’s intention? 

Think about how dangerous that could become.

With social media being global, think about how EASY it would be for ANYONE, ANYWHERE in the world to create content designed to turn people against each other.

My point is to compare the ACTUAL events of what is going on in the US to the premise of the movie “SAW.”

What if Jigsaw was another country or countries, and what if the intended target is the entire United States?

I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS THE CASE, OR THIS IS WHAT’S HAPPENING. MAYBE IT’S NOT ANOTHER COUNTRY, BUT RATHER JUST ANGRY PEOPLE SPREAD OUT ALL OVER THAT ARE FULL OF HATE, AND GET JOY IN PEOPLE DESTROYING EACH OTHER. 

There could be thousands of “JIGSAW’S out there who are just stirring up things for their own personal enjoyment.

Is it actually happening? Maybe.

Should we at least consider the fact that it IS happening? I think so.

Are the issues going on real? Of course they are. 

The problem is not that these issues aren’t real, but why they are turning into something a thousand times bigger. I think one of the main reason these issues are getting out of hand and turning violent, angry, and dangerous, is because of the sinister acts of bad people who want to take a bad situation, and make it infinitely worse.

To add insult to injury. If it’s true and it is happening, it would be almost impossible to know who is doing it, who started it vs. who is exacerbating it, and where they are doing it from.

It’s kind of like “Jigsaw” is also “The Invisible Man.”

AGAIN, AND PLEASE HEAR ME,

I am not saying all of this is happening, and I am not someone who believes in the million conspiracies out there.

What I want you to think about is. How realistic it “could” be that outside influences are taking the events of 2020 and using them to destroy a country from within. Kind of interesting when you think about it.

Have you ever watched an episode of Law and Order or CSI and thought to yourself. Wow that was freaking clever! I wonder if these shows give anyone ideas in real life.

If you do, then it isn’t too farfetched of a thought to wonder if “SAW” is really happening, only to a much larger scale.

Whatever, Reeve could not pinpoint the truth of the matter and he was nearly too exhausted to even fathom it out more. Was he mad with grief, taking on another’s pain as if it were his own? Or was he frustrated, cast into shifting sands of doubt by another’s action whom he had trusted? 

Had trusted, placed value upon and held respect for deep within. Only to be shown something opposite, completely anathema, to that internal construct he had built up around the other. So that was it. He felt betrayed. Felt like he did not know anything anymore. Not Veld, not Shinra. Not even himself.  

Frowning, Reeve concentrated instead on what he had set out to do. That was Alder on board, an old drinking buddy of his Da. Bit shaky now, but every bit as mentally capable as he had always been. Reynir too, the man from Icicle that Reeve had met at a conference one year, strong as an ox, with a temperament to match it. They lived down here now, downtrodden by the multitude of life’s fickle fancy. 

And by the summons, Reeve could feel it now. The dead in Kalm on the other hand, would never feel again.

He still had to reach out to Calla, Hebe and the others. A discrete team of tradespeople, out of opportunities, but not out of skills and all too ready to jump at any sliver of fortune Shinra deigned to bestow upon them. It was off the books, of course. That was the stipulation. Though there had been blank assurances the Urban Planning Department budget will balance at the next cycle regardless. The thought made him laugh, bitter as it bubbled in his throat.

Matching seamlessly in with the beleaguered squalor around him, Reeve slumped heavily down onto a rickety bench and placed his head in his hands. He did not notice the familiar figure passing by, although the woman had an almost innate habit of standing out. At least she used to. Reeve did not recognise this new world. It was not the world he works so hard for.

Cottagecore Films (pt. 11)

A Little Princess (1995)

starring Liesel Matthews, Liam Cunningham, Vanessa Chester, Eleanor Bron

synopsis

I was extremely disappointed in this film, to put it lightly. The story itself was beautiful, but that is thanks exclusively to the novel on which it was based. The movie itself utterly failed to convey the magic and timelessness of the book. The acting was flat, emotionless, and forced at every point, from every actor (except for maybe Cunningham, but he was absent for half of it). One would think a gaggle of girls would have some form of natural chemistry, whether pulling them together or apart, but not a single child actor portrayed even the remotest semblance of a relationship to another. (Note: I describe in my review of Pan’s Labyrinth what quality acting from a child looks like, for reference.) Even Matthews and Cunningham could not pass a believable father-daughter relationship, despite the story being about that. As far as emotional acting, the adults were just as bad as the children. They couldn’t even feign a single moment of joy, sadness, or anger, regardless of the context. I actually laughed for the entire scene during which Sara nearly died because of how bad the acting from the adults was. At least Chester seemed somewhat worried; Bron and the nameless police officers stood around so vacantly it looked like they forgot what was happening. I really was appalled by the abysmal acting, especially when so much was handed to them in the story. I want to preface my next point by saying that yes, I know computer animation was still a work in progress in the 90s. But this was horrifyingly awful. I have never once, not in my entire life, seen CGI as terrible as the monster in Sara’s stories. I nearly gave up on the entire movie within the first five minutes because of that monster. And it kept showing up, which absolutely ruined whatever favor I tried to hold for this movie. If you don’t have the budget, which this film clearly didn’t, don’t try to animate a monster. It’s that simple. I wish I had more words for it but it was truly so atrocious that I’m at a loss. Any good will I hold for this movie is due to my fondness for the story (no credit to the film), the settings (while not exceptional, they were fairly pretty), and Liam Cunningham’s acting. 2/10

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)

TW: blood, mild gore, torture, racism against indigenous people

starring Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Clive Owen, Abbie Cornish, Jordi Mollà, Samantha Morton

This film is the sequel to Elizabeth (1998) (see part 10 of my film reviews), which continues the story of Queen Elizabeth I as her rule progresses. Tensions between Catholic Spain and Protestant England grow ever greater, escalating to treasonous plots and assassination attempts. Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, and King Philip II of Spain conspire to depose Elizabeth and place Mary on the throne, restoring Catholicism as the national religion. Even as these events lead to war between the two superpowers, the court provides no sense of stability as new faces and new stresses surround the Virgin Queen. She forms a strong friendship with the pirate Walter Raleigh upon his return trip from the New World, where he seeks to establish colonies under the English flag. However, his stay is extended greatly when Elizabeth’s selfishness and pride take over, and are only broken down in the face of battle when she puts him at the forefront of the British navy. Outnumbered, Elizabeth will need Raleigh’s loyalty and cunning, along with the unwavering loyalty of her people, if they wish to survive the Spanish onslaught.

While still a drama, this film proved to be much more war-oriented than its predecessor, but I’m not sure it did either as well. I liked the deeper look this film gave us into the Elizabeth’s mind, especially with her social and emotional conflicts. They remind us that she is still human, despite the somewhat cold appearance the first film gave her at the end. She is more mature, and even more prideful, but there’s still a limit to what she can take as a person. I think the first film gave a better portrayal of her complicated mind, but this was a solid continuation of what years of ruling can do. I also liked how much detail they put into Raleigh’s character, which the first film didn’t do as well with its secondary characters. We got to know more about him, even if he did still feel somewhat surface-level. I think the dramatic aspects could have felt more high-stakes than they did, especially for the characters who were actually in danger. Even though so many characters were actively committing treason, I only felt that level of tension with one: Mary Stuart. Her death was particularly elegant and laden with symbolism, and even though I knew the outcome historically the scene still delivered the anxiety it was meant to. The others simply didn’t have the same delivery. Even the assassination attempt didn’t project any kind of concern, regardless of one’s historical knowledge. The war focus was a fairly different take than the first had, which I appreciated. The film established a strong balance between the tensions in England, Scotland, and Spain, and did a good job making the stakes very clear for each group. Given the uncritically positive stance on England that this film takes, I would have expected the film to villainize Spain a little more to form a stronger dichotomy between the two rulers, but Spain was presented rather neutrally to the audience. The Spanish ruler and nobles didn’t have much character, despite being the antagonist. As for that uncritical positivity regarding England, I do have a bit more to say. Although to an extent it makes sense that the film would lean in favor of England, given its content and the point of view from which the story is told, it became overbearing at times. England could do no wrong in this film, despite children dying in battle, indigenous people being humiliated and dehumanized for show, talk about slavery, and a complete disregard for the suffering of non-white and non-Protestant groups. In contrast, the first film heavily criticized England, from Mary of Guise shaming Elizabeth for sending young children to war, to Elizabeth frowning upon Walsingham’s torture methods (granted she never stopped them, but she didn’t approve as readily as she did in this film), and so on. Although England in truth did all of these things without rebuke, the film could have handled it more gracefully and came across less like propaganda, at the very least. 5/10

Loving Vincent (2017)

TW: suicide (action offscreen, death onscreen)

Sensory Warning: movement of the impressionistic paintings can be very disorienting for those with sensory processing difficulties. I had to break from watching multiple times so as not to become ill.

This fully hand-painted animated film follows Armand Roulin, a young man with a severe temper, on his way to deliver Vincent Van Gogh’s last letter to a living recipient. When he reaches the town where Vincent died, he begins speaking to a variety of villagers with their own stories about the artist, and their own theories about how he died. Armand tries to piece the puzzle together, wondering if the death was not a suicide as claimed, but rather something more sinister.

This film was spectacularly breathtaking. The amount of work that went into painting every scene was awe-inspiring, and definitely sets the bar high for any other films of its kind. The team of artists that created this film represented Van Gogh’s unique art style exquisitely through their loving application of oil-based paints, and truly brought to life the emotion he put into his works. I wish I hadn’t struggled so much with the constant movement, as I feel I would have been able to appreciate the film in its entirety better, but as it was I struggled to pay attention to the story because the art style consumed too much of my sensory processing capabilities. As for the story, I thought it was interesting, but I found it lacking despite the incredible artwork. Foremost, after some cursory research, I discovered that the homicide theory on which this film was based was only acknowledge by one individual, and spurned by hundreds of others. Although the film leaves the verdict open-ended, both to Roulin and to the audience, the story itself seemed to lean into the homicide theory, then completely give up on it with no resolution, so it came across as fairly noncommittal. I won’t argue for or against the theory, as I don’t know nearly enough about Van Gogh to assert an opinion, but I’m somewhat unsettled by the amount of weight it gave to it without any kind of evidentiary support, only to dump it as if the writers changed their mind themselves. The pacing was also slow for a murder mystery, which is basically what the story turned out to be. I would much have preferred the film to cover Vincent’s life, or even the days/weeks leading up to his death, instead of only featuring him in other people’s flashbacks. This kind of existential impressionism should capture the life of its creator, not the mundane views of people who didn’t understand him or even hated him. There wasn’t anything wrong with the film, per se, but I wish the writing was given as much love as the art was. 7/10

I’ve decided to make a tier list, because...I’m bored. :)

Feel free to ask any questions or open a discussion of any of my rankings, Tier Lists are pretty subjective and I like seeing what other people’s opinions are. I’ve given my opinions here as well, so the post is fairly lengthy. 

Of special note, my 1-3 Star Tier Lists will be also factoring in Grails. Grails aren’t super important for 4 or 5 stars, but budget units greatly appreciate the extra stats due to their lower bases. 

1-star Tier List

This tier list will look at the 1-star Servants in the game and rank them based on overall usefulness. This includes both general content, farming, and Challenge quests. This list will also not look at these units in just budget teams, but also in teams will higher rarity units. There will also be a separate ranking for certain units if they are given grails, as stats are the overall limiter to the general usability to using 1-stars.

S-Rank: Top tier units that are very useful overall. Often have specific niches that are not seen in other units, or do what they do so well that they outclass almost every other unit.

A-Rank: Units who are very good at what they do. They are not at the pinnacle of usefulness as other Servants and may face some competition, but they will do their jobs well.

B-Rank: Units who are good, but may not be usable in every team or may be outclassed by other units. Do their jobs generally decently, but often have viable alternatives.

C-Rank: Units who are mediocre. They generally don't have a useful niche or have a lot of Servants who outclass them. Usually require support to be good.

D-Rank: Servants who are simply not good. They may have some usability, but are nonviable the majority of the time.

S-Rank Mozart: Mozart is by far and away the best 1 star. His 44% Arts card boost is very good, but it is his 50 critical star bomb that solidifies his niche, enabling a very large number of Servants to do a lot more damage than they normally will, especially Arts-based critical Servants. His second skill is total bunk and his NP is mediocre, but his other two skills really help hold him together and make him incredible. Mozart is not particularly boosted by Grails, since he's a support and support Servants don't rely on HP or ATK all too much.

A-Rank Mata Hari: Mata Hari is a very overlooked Servant, but she is one of the only 1-stars that truly shines regardless of stats. Her main niche is in simply damage boosting, with her skills providing a 40% Defense down to the opponent and her NP potentially providing an additional 20-30%. She can also potentially Charm, although its inconsistent, and inflicts Skill Seal, a decent debuff. Mata Hari can benefit from Grails if you want to use her for more overall damage, since her NP gain is good and she can rather easily get off multiple NPs, but it doesn't change her rank.

Spartacus: Spartacus is more of a low-A rank, but he's a very good unit for farming. He's an easily accessible Berserker with an AoE NP and a NP charge skill, making him very good for farming. He can be useful in general content and some Challenge Quest because his NP also ignores defense buffs. His myriad number of heals and his Guts do provide him some survivability. Grails do help Spartacus with survivability especially, but he doesn't get a large enough bonus in his damage to raise him up a rank.

Arash: Arash is the premier farming Servant since his release. He has a good NP charge on his 3rd skill and a very powerful NP that gets even stronger with Overcharge. Even better, however, is that Arash's NP will kill Arash, allowing another Servant to come in without requiring the use of Plugsuit. This can be used as strategic times or to simply make farming easier. The main thing holding Arash back from being S-rank is that without any buffs, Arash's damage may not be enough, but Grails boost his damage enough to put him in S-rank if you decide to Grail him.

B-Rank Asterios: Asterios is quite possibly one of the most lop-sided units usability wise. Many newer Masters will probably find him to be overall very weak and have difficulties using him effectively, but with the right set-ups and certain enemies, Asterios may be a complete game-winner on his own. All three of his skills are good, but his NP is where he truly shines, massively reducing opponent's ATK and DEF. Asterios, however, relies on outside support or an enemy that has a high number of hit counters in order to be effective, which hampers his overall usefulness.

Grails boost Asterios' bulk and power, which not only makes him easier to use against more enemies but also allows him to do a lot of potential critical damage with his three skills. A grailed Asterios hence is low-A rank with Grails.

Sasaki Kojirou: Sasaki is an Assassin with a pretty decent power output. His NP will hit decently hard with its good damage numbers and a 20% Quick performance up, and he can do a fair amount of crit damage as well. Due to being a launch Quick servant however, and his low overall stats, he doesn't overly excel at this role compared to other Assassins. His most notable trait is his ability to ignore Evasion for 3 turns because of this. Grails, however, will massively boost his damage and make him a solid A-rank Servant, with both some survivability and damage.

Paul Bunyan: Bunyan was a little difficult to really pin down a ranking for. Bunyan isn't a particularly unique Servant in what she does, providing support and some damage potentially, but she doesn't really excel in either of those areas. Her potential with Buster crit Servants, providing three 20% buffs to their damage in Def down, Buster up, and Critical damage up, is rather notable, but it limits her ability to be used in different team comps. In addition, her very poor survivability makes her very difficult to use as actual damage. She's a high B-rank because of her support potential. Grails giving her extra HP and ATK pushes her into a low A-rank because it makes it more likely she can be used for farming and deal good enough damage.

Bartholomew Roberts: Bartholomew is similar to Bunyan in that he performs two roles: support, and damage dealing. Support wise he has a number of good tools, including Voyager of the Storm, a 40% crit buff for the entire party, and a crit rate down + 20 stars skill. His crit buff also reduces his crit star weight, meaning he can make Berserkers getting crits more consistent too. His support is a little scattered, however, which limits his usefulness there. He can do decent damage to Caster enemies and Bronze enemies thanks to his effective damage on his NP, which makes him a potentially useful farmer, but in specific scenarios.

Grails don't boost him enough to raise him into A-rank because of how specific Bartholomew is. This would change if he got an NP upgrade, however, since it would boost his damage to the point where he could consistently farm Bronze enemies of any class.

C-Rank Jason: Jason is pretty much the epitome of C-rank. He can either be used as a support Servant, and while his 3rd skill is very good, it only works on a very select group of Servants, and to adequately do any farming he'll need support and probably a team in which to enable 3-turn looping. His skillset is decent otherwise but nothing extraordinary. He does very mediocre damage on his own, only doing decent damage to Lancers.

Grails will boost Jason to a low B-rank. His damage will still not be very good, but he'll require less support to be usable and the Arts AoE Saber niche is very underfilled. An NP upgrade would help solidify Jason as a B-rank with Grails.

Charlotte Corday: This one really hurts me, but its the best place to rank her. She's better than Jason because she's at least capable of doing things on her own, but the problem isn't her own usability and more that her niche is oversaturated and she is outclassed by other Servants, more severely than Sasaki. She has a good survival skill with a 2 hit evasion, has the coveted combo of Pierce Invul and Ignore Def for 1 turn, can remove evasion buffs, and has the potential for high crit or NP damage. Corday's 3rd buff is very inconsistent, however, and because of this she benefits having a team built around any three of her buffs procing instead of just one. Her Atk up also has bad downtime which limits her face card damage. It wouldn't take much to make Charlotte B-rank, but she still faces stiff competition regardless.

Grails will boost Corday to B-rank, stabilizing her damage and giving her more HP to tank with. She can be a good boss killer, especially with support, but she still isn't noteworthy enough to compete with the other good Arts Assassins.
