Wordplay Wednesday: Oxidation and Reduction
As a geologist, I use the words oxidation and reduction a lot. For example:
Tumblr media
These rocks have gone through oxidation.
Tumblr media
Or this rock contains reduction spots.
But what do I mean when I say these things? Primarily, this has to do with iron and its properties (but other elements can be oxidized or reduced too). Iron is super reactive with oxygen, like best friends who go everywhere together. However, what iron isn't aware of is that oxygen isn't a good friend.
Reduction is the opposite of oxidation. It is the gaining of electrons. So, if one element is being oxidized, another is being reduced.
Tumblr media
Making sense so far? Here is what the reaction for rust (which is what happened to those red rocks above) looks like:
Tumblr media
Copper also oxidizes. A great example is the Statue of Liberty.
Tumblr media
So the next time you pass by red cliffs you can sound super smart to your friends and family by telling them that those cliffs have been oxidized.
Tune in tomorrow for a look at the father of mineralogy. Fossilize you later!

It's always math and English rivalry, why doesn't anyone see the true rivalry: English and science. Cuz hoooo boy let me tell you as someone who likes English, every time chemistry tries to tell me that reduction means you GAIN an election, I lose my mind a little bit. Do not even get me started on entropy and the word spontaneous

Here’s Why and How to Shift from a Sugar to a Fat-Burning Metabolism
Regardless of age, when our body is fat-adapted, it can effortlessly generate energy from sugar and fat, giving us a better metabolic position and a defined body.  A long time ago, when struggling with metabolic issues, I learned that anthropological studies indicated that humans survived famines and evolved by gaining fat-adapted bodies. When studying mechanisms, I found that gluconeogenesis…

Pocket ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential) tester
Tumblr media
A Pocket ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential) tester is a portable device used to measure the ORP of a solution. ORP is a measure of the ability of a solution to act as an oxidizing or reducing agent. In practical terms, it indicates the potential for electron transfer in a chemical reaction. The device has electrode that is immersed in the solution being tested. When the electrode comes into contact with the solution, it generates a voltage that is proportional to the ORP of the solution. The device then converts this voltage into a numerical ORP value. The ORP value is usually displayed on a digital screen.Connector-BNC;ORP measurement range(-999) to 999 mV;ORP accuracy-± 2 mV;ORP calibration points-1 point (only for relative mV mode) for more visit labtron

Oxidation-reduction | Redox
Before going into details of antioxidants, let us know what oxidation is so we can understand it clearly. It will help us to understand antioxidants. Oxidation is the addition of oxygen to a substrate or the removal of hydrogen or electrons from a substance. Oxidation = substrate + oxygen = substrate – hydrogen = substrate – electron. It is clear from its definition that oxygen is not…
