Kazu lay sprawled across the couch, staring blankly at the ceiling of Jun’s apartment. The faint hum of the refrigerator was the only sound breaking the stillness. He sighed, shifting his head to the side, his dark hair falling into his eyes. boredom clung to him like a second skin. Jun, his boyfriend, was stuck in a meeting—something about suppliers for his restaurant, Le Moon's. With no plans and nothing to do, the day stretched out endlessly before him.
Then, a spark flickered in his mind. He sat up slowly, a grin tugging at his lips. Jun’s kitchen. It wasn’t just any kitchen, it was a treasure trove of ingredients, a playground for someone like Kazu who loved to experiment. Jun owned Le Moon's, a cozy little restaurant known for its bold flavors and creative dishes, so his home kitchen was stocked with everything from exotic spices to fresh fruits. Why not mess around and make something new? Something Jun could maybe even put on the menu one day.
Kazu shuffled into the kitchen, tying his hair back with a loose elastic he found on the counter. The space smelled faintly of lemongrass and garlic from whatever Jun had cooked last night. He opened the fridge, scanning the shelves. A pink guava sat nestled between a carton of milk and a jar of pickled radishes. Perfect. Guava juice was sweet, refreshing, familiar. But Kazu wasn’t in the mood for familiar. He wanted something with a kick.
He grabbed the guava, a knife, and a cutting board, then set to work slicing the fruit, its juicy flesh staining his fingers a faint pink. He tossed the pieces into a blender, adding a splash of water to help it along. As the machine whirred, he tapped his foot, thinking. Sugar? No, too predictable. Lime? Maybe. Then his eyes landed on a small jar tucked beside the stove, chili flakes. Jun used them in some of his spicier dishes at Le Moon. Kazu’s grin widened. Why not?
He poured the blended guava juice into a tall glass, the vibrant pink liquid catching the light. Then, with a reckless sort of glee, he sprinkled in a pinch of chili flakes, then another, because Kazu never did anything halfway. He stirred it with a spoon, watching the tiny red flecks swirl into the juice like embers in a sunset. It looked wild. It looked alive.
He took a sip.
The sweetness hit first, bright and tropical, coating his tongue. Then came the heat, a slow burn that crept up the back of his throat, sharp and surprising. His eyes widened. It was strange. It was chaotic. It was… kind of good? He took another sip, letting the flavors wrestle in his mouth. The guava’s softness clashed with the chili’s fire, but somehow, they worked together, like a dance where one partner kept stepping on the other’s toes, but they still moved in rhythm.
Kazu laughed to himself, imagining Jun’s face when he got home. “Babe, I made you a drink,” he’d say, handing over the glass. Jun would probably raise an eyebrow, take a cautious sip, and then either praise him or tease him mercilessly. Maybe both. Either way, Kazu couldn’t wait to find out.
He set the glass down, already plotting his next move. Maybe a dash of salt? Or a squeeze of lime to cut through the heat? The afternoon didn’t seem so boring anymore. With Jun’s kitchen at his disposal, Kazu had all the time in the world to play.
