Dynamite Comics and Disney Comics Announce Prequel “Gargoyles: Dark Ages” Mini-Series Slated For June 2023.
Dynamite Comics and Disney Comics   announced today an exciting new miniseries event that will continue to expand their hit comic, Gargoyles Gargoyles: Dark Ages will feature a journey into the past and the Manhattan Clan’s origin story, thanks to franchise creator Greg Weisman.  Weisman is joined by artist Drew Moss (”Vampirella/Red Sonja, Copperhead”) and letterer Jeff Eckleberry. The book also offers a perfect entry point for newcomers to the franchise and comic series.
Dark Ages will have covers featuring younger visions of iconic characters, with a new mix of artists separate from the main series to offer fans and collectors more unique portrayals of the cast. Legendary artist Clayton Crain (Venom, Spider-Man) leads the way, alongside Alan Quah, Mirka Andolfo, Kenya Danino, and Erica Henderson. Unique and limited edition variants feature an action figure-inspired piece, some pitch artwork from the TV show, and covers by both Jae Lee and interior artist Moss.
Gargoyles: Dark Ages #1
July 2023
Written By Greg Weisman Art By  Drew Moss
As Goliath’s narration explained, “One thousand years ago, Superstition and the Sword ruled. It was an Age of Darkness. It was a World of Fear.” For a time, the Gargoyles of that era lived peacefully alongside humans, each species having sworn to protect the other. But that truce didn’t last, and in 994, the Gargoyle Clan was cursed to sleep as stone statues for a millennium – until they eventually awoke in modern Manhattan. Gargoyles: Dark Ages, set in the year 971, depicts the origins of the Gargoyle-Human Alliance – some twenty-plus years before things came to a bad end. In this never-before-explored era, monsters still come in all shapes and sizes, forcing Gargoyles and Humans to work together to repel the forces of evil, which threaten to bring the Alliance down, from both without and within.
I have ALL these stories that I’ve wanted to tell for decades now, so I pitched a number of ideas to Dynamite and Disney, and this is the one that excited everyone the most,” said Weisman. “This is an exciting era for the Gargoyle Clan (not to mention an exciting time in Scottish History), and I’m thrilled we’ll all have a chance to explore it together.
“I really enjoyed the show back in the ’90s and was super excited to be even considered for this project,” said Moss. “I am trying to do interior art traditionally, so this allows me to do some washes and other things that allow me to get my hands dirty. I hope to stay true to the art from the show while infusing my own art style to it.”
In addition to the first issue having an oversized 24-page story, each issue of Dark Ages will also feature four pages of complementary prose storytelling by Weisman with spot illustrations. This extra material will allow him to tap into corners of the mythos in a way that will amplify the impact of the entire series. The series will also feature high-quality cardstock covers on each variant. At 40 total pages, Gargoyles: Dark Ages #1 will be the next ultimate celebration of Disney’s iconic franchise.

Tag Game
I was tagged by @adverbian so I’ll give it a go! I’m going to subtract the data from the fic I’m listed as co-creator on though, because I only provided art for it. ❤️
How many works to you have on ao3?
11
What’s your total ao3 word count?
356,295 - I’m a long fic person. 🫠
What fandoms do you write for?
Good Omens
Top five fics by kudos:
Queen of Hell - Crowley becomes the Queen of Hell to avert the second coming. Explores his past relationship as Lucifer’s lover.
The Last Dance - A 1941 speculative piece of Aziraphale’s apology dance.
Why Does the Ortolan Sing? - Human AU where Crowley is a busker at the coffee shop that Azira falls in love with. Crowley is already in a toxic relationship with a mobster.
One Vision - My first fic and my take on the Second Coming. Ends in South Down with a cat.
The Devil’s Love - Pre-fall Crowley doesn’t realize Lucifer’s plans for him, and Aziraphale has a crush.
Do you respond to comment?
I try to. Sometimes it takes me a couple days to work up the spoons for it, but I love receiving comments! I try and say more than just a thank you, but at the very least I try and do that.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I’ve written so much angst, I can’t really say what someone else would consider the angstiest ending.
I have two pre-fall fics: The Devil’s Love and The Queen’s Fall, so obviously that is going to end in angst. I’ve had the most people comment that The Last Dance broke their hearts. Technically Do It Again is a hopeful ending, but… Well, archive warnings exist for a reason. 🙃
What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Probably my first fic, One Vision. It was how I dealt with the end of s2, so it was pretty positive. I’ve since embraced the angst, although I still tend to end things positively.
Do you get hate on fics?
Not yet…
Do you write smut?
I’ve written smut scenes in very plot-heavy fics. Still rather new to it, but my latest has really pushed me further into it. I can only write it when I’m dead tired, for some reason…
Craziest crossover:
I’ve been quite taken with Red Sonja Crowley… I posted Battle Raiments and Camping Gear, but didn’t list Red Sonja as a fandom because it’s just clothes. 😅 They are crack art posts, but I guess they are crossovers.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Doubt it.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but that would be cool!
Have you ever co-written a fic?
I’m listed as co-creator on Tale of the Sea Bucca, but I only did art. I joined the Drabble for the GOAD Writer’s Guild celebration, so that was a kind of mini co-writing thing.
All-time favorite ship?
Aziraphale/Crowley for life. They’re the only reason I’m writing fics. I enjoy writing Crowley/Lucifer simply because it’s rife with angst.
What a WIP you want to finish, but probably won’t?
I usually only write one thing at a time, with the exception of Queen of Hell, which I wrote outlined all three parts at the same time.
What are your writing strengths?
I’ve been told recently that I’m great at presenting the mental effect a toxic relationship has on someone without it devolving into torture porn. That means a lot, because I’ve tried handling it with fineness. I’ve also been asked if I was Neil Gaiman because I made someone hate God and feel for Satan. 😆
What are your writing weaknesses?
I feel like my smut could be better. Honestly, don’t get me started on my weaknesses or I won’t stop.
Thoughts on dialog in another language.
Cool! I’m not confident enough to do it myself, but big props to those who have.
First fandom you wrote for:
As a kid, I think I wrote X Files fan fics during study hall, but never posted anywhere. Mostly about John Doggett dying and Mulder coming back. 🙃
Favorite fics you’ve written:
Even though I don’t normally read human AU, I’m really enjoying writing Why Does the Ortolan Sing? because of the depth to the story itself. I adore my Crowley in the Queen of Hell series and the dynamic between Lucifer and Aziraphale. I want to write them again, but I don’t have a story yet.
I haven’t re-read it for a while, but I was really proud of The Last Dance. It’s also the only fic I’ve written that I’ve seen recommended to others, which is an honor.
I have no one to tag, because everyone I know has probably already been tagged. 😅

Party Crasher: Session Zero
Prologue to an interactive vore story series
"Let us gather to honor and remember our fallen friend Lycaea. Her mind was as keen as her aim was true, and she was ever a loyal companion. She will always be remembered by the remaining Dawnhollow Dunces, and her faithful mecha-steed, Murdertronic 9000." Astrid held the painted miniature up and finished her solemn pronouncement. The others at the table cast down their eyes respectfully. The unicorn set the mini down in the middle of the map of the group's last battle. "Alina, she was your character. Any final comments?"
The fox seated beside her smiled and shook her head, the light catching on the green-tinted sunglass lenses she wore even indoors. "Just that I'm proud of her. Going out on her own terms, giving the Gloaming King the middle finger. We should all be so lucky."
"Using angel blood in the explosive was inspired," Evonne said, and the rest nodded and murmured agreement.
Astrid raised an eyebrow. It was rare for the blue-haired doe to pay a genuine compliment to anyone, but she had seemed truly moved by the artistry when Alina had revealed her character's crowning achievement last session. Astrid would have expected Evonne to start feigning snores the second the fox pulled out actual blueprints. Maybe the party was growing closer. Or maybe Evonne just admired the sadism involved in Alina's idea for getting that much ichor out of a celestial. Okay, yeah, now that she thought about it, that was definitely it.
Oh well, whatever kept the players engaged.
Astrid looked around at the group. Her party, and a few friends who'd shown up for the epilogue session, just to spectate. And have cake, of course.
There was Alina on her left, a slender woman with red fur and green streaks in her pulled-up hair that matched her lenses. The little necklace of bright plastic skulls she wore clacking together as she animately explained that the angel siphon was based on a device she'd built for an experiment in real life earlier this month.
Next to her sat Sonja, looking a bit sickened. Though it was unclear if that was due to Alina's detailed description or the state of her stomach. The tall draft horse had been experiencing significant discomfort for the last few sessions on account of having an entire guy in her gut. That wasn't anything special in this group. Almost everyone here had shown up with a 'passenger' in varying digestive states at one time or another. But Sonja's guts were one of the least equipped of the bunch to deal with predatory dalliances, and had been gnawing away at the same person for about a whole month. The other girls had been referring to the lump beneath her sweater as her boyfriend and, much to her embarrassment, had actually managed to have a few conversations with him in the time between showing up and starting to game.
At the far end of the table was Prin. The wolf's leather jacket hung off the back of her chair, the front two legs of which were off the ground as she rocked back, idly texting on her phone. As the reminiscing died down, she looked up, brushed aside her violet bangs, and asked, "Soooo, we going to send Lycaea to Valhalla by way of the goat now?"
One seat over, opposite Sonja, the goat in question blushed and clutched the edge of the table. Aspen played the party cleric, but that wasn't why it was on her to deliver last rights. No, that was a result of her real life talents. "Um, I guess if you're all done saying goodbye. . ." She trailed off in a small voice.
"Oh, is she gonna do the thing? Vanilla said, walking back over to stand behind Prin with a slice of cake on her plate. The white rabbit had an athletic build and, not counting her ears, stood only about as tall as Prin sitting down. "I've never actually seen it." She wrapped her arms around the wolf's neck, and fed Prin a slice of her cake as she rested her head on her shoulder. The wolf and rabbit were on-again-off-again . . . something . . . and right now they were on. They'd probably go back to being bitter rivals in a few weeks, which Astrid at least found preferable, but for now the unicorn had to endure them being all lovey-dovey.
"Aspen always helps us say goodbye to a character," Astrid explained, and gave Alina's mini to Evonne, who passed it to Aspen, who wiped a spot of drool from her lips before receiving it reverently.
"I think it's cool you guys are still doing that," Cecily said from where she sat with Kinsey, a little off from the rest of the group. The lynx and the lioness weren't part of the party, but Cecily had been in the campaign before this one. She'd had to leave when her streaming took off and there was too much schedule clash. She turned to Kinsey and explained, "When your character dies in Astrid's game, Aspen here gets to eat your mini. She's like a little goat-shaped trash compactor."
"Oh, more gets put into her than trash," Prin said, and there were a few snickers around the table. "Remember the vampire's castle?"
"What happened at the vampire's castle?" Kinsey asked, leaning in and pushing up her glasses. The lioness was becoming more interested by the second as the conversation wore on, especially when she saw how much this teasing was causing the plump and pretty goat to blush. Her ears were practically steaming. She was so cute! Kinsey didn't even realize she was licking her lips.
Evonne wrapped an arm around Aspen, who squeaked in surprise at the contact but didn't pull away. "Oh, Aspen here got charmed by the lady of the castle and her cleric became the Countess's personal bloodbag. But Aspen got to do some sucking as well, didn't you girl?"
"Y-Yes," Aspen said, her face on fire now.
"It took us three sessions to find what we needed to break the spell, and until then, Aspen spent her game nights under the table," Evonne finished with a wink.
"Ohhhhh I SO wish I had more nights free so I could play with you guys," Kinsey breathed, adjusting the hem of her skirt.
"They could've saved her much sooner," Astrid said smugly. "But I wish they'd dawdled even longer. Having Aspen's head between my thighs was doing wonders for my creative energy."
"Great hoofrest, too," Evonne added fondly.
"And she never once made a mess!" Astrid finished with a laugh.
"N-No gag reflex. . ." Aspen murmured, somehow shy and proud at once.
"Speaking of which," Sonja cut in impatiently as she shifted in her creaking seat. Her stomach warbled and bubbled with complaints as faint lumps moved beneath her sweater. "We should probably get on with it, right?"
"Yeah. Bye Lycaea. You were so much fun. I hope there are demolitions in heaven," Alina said.
"Yeah, I REALLY don't think she's going to heaven," Sonja said under her breath, then gritted her teeth and rubbed at her stomach as her 'date' weakly shifted to make himself more comfortable inside.
Everyone watched as Aspen lifted up the painted mini of the artificer with shaking hands, then popped it into her mouth like a piece of candy. She rolled it on her tongue, eyes fluttering as she tasted the paint and pushed her tongue into all the nooks and crevices, rough and smooth, that made up her magical armor. A hush had settled over the room, broken only by the irritable rumblings of Sonja's gut. Aspen didn't bother to chew, of course. She swallowed in one fluid move, rolling her tongue back and feeling the width of the base and the pointed edges of the plastic sculpt jut into her throat. It slowly sank, a lump visible in her neck, and the goat swayed side to side, a soft moan displaced by Alina's avatar sinking irrevocably into her belly. As she came back to reality, licking her chops, she felt everyone's attention again and shrank down in her chair.
Kinsey spoke first. "So, ah, how many is that this campaign?" She clasped her hands on her lap to conceal her growing interest. It didn't stop Cecily from noticing and giving her thigh a squeeze.
"Well," Prin said, sitting up and kissing Vanilla on the cheek, "there's been three deaths, but that's only the second mini Aspen got to eat. I died when we were level . . . 8 or 9? And the rest of the Dunces managed to resurrect me. But when Evonne lost her bard to a dragon she decided to move on and try out a druid. So we let her first character stay dead. And there's not enough left of Lycaea after the explosion, and it's the end of the game anyway, so. . . That's two on the goat hips."
"Aww, you didn't want to be on the goat hips?" Vanilla teased, playfully nibbling her ear.
"Oh, shut up," Prin said with an equally playful growl.
~
The conversation meandered for a while longer, with everyone reminiscing, and the slices of cake and the bowls of chips all dwindled. Soda cans and cider bottles littered the table, then got pushed toward Aspen, who did her thing, sending the recycling crumpling and clinking down her gullet and into her swelling tummy, causing Kinsey to squirm ever more. There was a lot to talk about. It had been a wild, twisty, epic story they'd all made together. And it was late when it all finally calmed down enough for a silence to linger, and in that silence Alina asked, "So what's next?"
The group looked to their game master. Astrid absolutely ate up the anticipation. "I've got a few ideas. . ."
Evonne spoke up. "Actually, I wanted to run something by you nerds before we get into all that." The doe leaned forward. "I've been telling one of my friends about our game for a little while, and she took an interest. I told her I'd run it by all of you, since we were starting a new campaign soon. Her name's Portia. I could add her to our chat, maybe? I think you'd all enjoy getting to know her."
"Oh oh oh!" Prin said, jumping up. Her tail wagged. "Thanks for saying something! I've got someone I want to bring too. Her name's Charlie. We work out together. She's awesome, really funny—"
"Well, hang on now," Evonne started, feeling like this was getting further away from her thing. Then Aspen piped up as well.
"I-I've been talking to my friend Livie, and I told her I'd see if there was a spot for her to-UUURP!" She covered her mouth in surprise. Though the metal-and-sugar taste that came up was not unwelcome.
"Wait, Livie from the coffee place on the way?" Prin asked, and Aspen nodded eagerly. "She's hot. We could totally—!"
Evonne started to say something again, but Astrid put up her hands. "Wait, wait wait wait. Look, we've got five players now. I could do six. I think. But eight is asking a lot. You need to decide among yourselves, somehow. I'd offer to choose, but you know I'm traveling the next couple of weeks. Besides, I'd probably just eat them all anyhow. Most of my restraint gets used up on you girls."
Cecily had been quiet for a while, but now she sat herself on the edge of the table near Astrid. "Now that's an idea," she said, dancing her fingers teasingly up the unicorn's horn. She tossed her hair as she turned toward Evonne and the others who'd spoken up. "Any of your friends people-eaters?" The lynx smiled very fangedly as she waited for the others to process her meaning. "We're all top of the food chain around here. Anyone who sits at this table giving off prey animal vibes isn't going to last long anyway. Hell, back when Astrid was running for me, Prin, Sonja, and Aspen, the goat would kick off a feeding frenzy every couple months. So unless your nominations can miraculously come back just like her, or hold their own, I wouldn't go getting attached."
Alina rubbed her chin. "Mm. You're thinking we pit them against each other. Decide that way. I like it!"
"You're asking them to sacrifice their friends?" Vanilla asked, though she didn't seem as aghast as she could be.
Prin cracked her knuckles. "Only if we think they'd lose. And I don't think Charlie would lose."
Vanilla's ears tilted back. "Wait, Charlie's a predator? She's so . . . small. And that's coming from me."
"I stopped underestimating the small and hungry a long time ago. You haven't been working out with us as long, Vanilla. You haven't seen her come in with prey-weight to trim down. We haven't talked about it, but . . . I get the vibe from her. I'm worried about Aspen's barrista, though. Livie seems like a sweetheart. She should probably sit this one out."
Aspen flushed. "A-Actually, she's had me a couple times now? She's more dangerous than people give her credit for. She's got a collection like yours, Prin. I guess, if she loses, I'd miss adding to it. . . But I'll be trading up if I get to be eaten by whoever beats her, so it's okay?"
"Evonne?" At Astrid's word, everyone turned toward the doe.
Evonne blinked. "Huh? Oh. Yeah, sure, whatever. I don't care."
"You just. . . You seemed so excited for us to meet Portia a second ago?" Sonja said, rubbing her gut.
"Nah, I was just trying to get her here so she'd be easier to eat. But this tournament thing sounds fun, so why not?"
"Three people is a pretty lousy tournament," Vanilla said. "I suppose . . . I could suggest someone for the running, too."
In the end, everyone but Astrid had someone to offer, and a bracket was drawn up. Eight unwitting souls. A series of blind dates. One survivor. The girls clustered eagerly around the table as dice were rolled to decide the matchups.
Welcome to Party Crasher, an interactive vore saga! You decide who becomes girlmush and who lives to see another day. Stay tuned for Round 1, Livie vs. Portia (part 1 of 2). Coming soon!

Screwhead Fiction Double Feature: Army of Darkness: Ashes 2 Ashes Review: 50% Groovy (Comissioned by WeirdKev27)
Tumblr media
Happy Halloween ya Screwheads! Like last year we're taking a look at the evil dead courtsey of my good friend Kev, though trimmed down this time: we're only taking two looks at the king himself baby, but two that i'd be bound to eventually, both attempts to start an EviL Dead Universe from scratch. First up is Dynamite's Army of Darkness: Ashes 2 Ashes.
If your curious both why Army of Darkness of all three movies has such a sprawling comic line and why it dosen't bear the Evil Dead name as most media would from the 2010's onward that's simple: RIGHTS ISSUES BABYEEE! Much like another faviorite horror franchise of mine, Chucky, the rights are split due to Rami using a diffrent studio each time and while The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II eventually ended up lumped back together, Army of Darknesss so far hasn't, requiring coperation to use any of it's parts. As such Ash Vs the Evil dead choose to leave Army of Darkness out to avoid high costs on an already high budget show, and this comic exists as Universal or whoever owns the Army of Darkness brand could just lisence it out.
So thanks to the prologue these comics can use the cabin, the book, Linda, and all that but nothing specific from Evil Dead's 1 and 2, while having free reign to use anything from army of darkness. It's also why the now defunct Space Goat Publishing was able to make an Evil Dead II comic, which i'll be covering later this halloween season. Also tangentially related tangent but why HAVEN'T we had an Army of Darkness Vs Chucky crossover? I mean come on, the two are made for each other. We've honestly seen criminally few Chucky comics and general and given Ash has thrown hands with Herbert West, classic horror monsters and more, it only makes sense for the two to go at it. Come on someone anyone make this happen.
Speaking of publishing, to my suprise while i couldn't dig up much about these comics I did find out something fascinating: Dynamite, the comics company that publishes army of darkness comics to this very day, was BUILT on the back of this franchise. While they had to run it through Devils Due Publishing for the first two mini series their success lead to COUNTLESS more comics and Dynamtie getting more properties like Red Sonja, becoming a licensed comics machine over the years. Originals wise it's best known for Project Superpowers, an Alex Ross lead revival of various public domain golden age heroes and the Boys, aka the thing that haunts my nightmares at night after having to review it for Kev Last year.
Unlike Boom or IDW Dynamite is a company i'm not really experienced with, having not read an Army of Darkness comic till now as I hadn't seen the movie till last year, quite the screwhead I know. It dosen't seem to be a bad company and in fact will be publishing the Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck Comics this year, they just never seemed to have properties I cared about original or otherwise and I had to be paid to look at the boys for damn good reason
Tumblr media
Yeah that's also so those of you who only watched the show know it's JUST the comic. I hate having to specify every time.. but i'd also hate for the actually GOOD efforts those boys running the show are putting in to get mixed in with the sludgey source it comes from.
Rami and Campbell arne't involved in these, likely because they weren't asked and Campbell seems very unahppy his best friend wasn't remotely consulted and this just.. happened without his consent. I don't judget the comics nor those who worked on them for that, or even Dynamite as if you have a shot with the boomstick, one that ended up being the backbone of your comapny for a long time, I cna' tblame you for not firing it into some screwhead. I do blame Universal for being fucking awful in this case, so I got that going for me.
And thus with all this preamble out of the way we have Ashes 2 Ashes
Tumblr media
A 4 issue 2004 mini series picking up exactly where Army leaves off. It's written by Andy Hartnell, a comics writer known for writing the comic Danger Girl which I have not read and drawn by Nick Bradshaw. Hows it hold up almost 20 years later? Let's rev up our chainsawas and find out
We open cleverly, with the exact opening narration from Army of Darkness, covering a very truncated version of Evil Dead 2, i.e. Ash took Linda to the cabin, she didn't make it, he got sucked into a sky hole and wound up in the middle ages. The comic then recaps Army of Darkness itself. In short for anyone who missed my marathon of the films last year or is just a fan of this blog and is just reading this for completions sake, all two of you: Ash Williams was an average guy who went up with his girlfriend Shiela to a Cabin in the Woods wooo-oooo, only to accidently raise the dead. At least his car was fine. This was via the Necronomicon Ex Mortis, the book of the dead, an eldritch tome clearly made out of human skin that unleashes an army of darkness hoping to swallow humanities souls to take over the world, as you do. Ash was able to stop them the first time but got sucked into a sky hole and ended up in the past. After a breif touch of slavery and fighting in a gladiator pit, he worked to try and seal the book, failed specatucarliy and helped King Arthur kill a bunch of people, romanced a woman named SHiela and came back via some words having said them wrong. Thankfully this isnt' the directors cut so he did come back to present day.. but took some deadites with him, shooting one, making out with a lady.. and that's where our story picks up
In this version things aren't quite settled as Ash soon finds that the deadite he fought at the end isn't the only person to come back. The Wise Man, an old man who was basically their verison of Merlin has come to the present. In natural Ash Williams fashion he didn't say the magic words when going back to the present right.
This is also where my big issue reading these first two issues crops up: Nick Bradshaw's paneling. To explain here's a sample from this very scene)
Tumblr media
As you can see for some reason his panels go left to right, then right to left with no arrows or clear visual trickery to get yoru eyes to move that way. You CAN make going all around the page work but your eye HAS to be able to follow it or you get situations like this. It's why when most artist's do something like this it's for movement and to really spice things up , not for ash pushing an old man around. It's a problem that isn't in EVERY page but pops up way too often.
The art style itself is decent, but I do think lacks in places, as while I do think a cartoony art style can work for a comic adaptation of a live action work, as seen with IDW's awesome ghostbusters comics i'll hopefully get to cover at some point, the art here really just dosen't seem to have enough balance between realism and expression at times. It's not terrible, but it's not exactly amazing either and often undercuts just how horrific the deadites were which, even in the more comedic Army of Darkness, are one of the most iconic things about this franchise.
Story wise it's decent and the premise is out and out brilliant: See while Ash DID come back to S-Mart turns out he was a few days early, and he soon finds that out from the Wise Man .. and from seeing his past self and Shiela get in the Delta. It's simple but brilliant: Ash has a chance to undo everything if he can get there in time, but both the fact he NEEDS the loop to close as intended and send his past self back so Army of Darkness happens, and having to travel through the woods on a motorcyle with The Wise Man riding sidecar make it hard.
That said while the premise is great… the comic doesn't make full use of it. Part of this I understand: with the rights issues their hands were tied and thus they couldn't exactly have Ash having the full adventure he should via time travel, with basically all of Evil Dead 2 having to happen off panel for this to work.
Sadly another thing holding it back is charcterzation issues. The comic dosen't just take after Army of Darkness in what it can use but in how Ash is portrayed. There is a it of a gap between his personality in Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. In the former he's a bit of a goofus, but also badass, and understandably terrified. While the latter two carry on to Army of Darkness, he also takes a sharp detour into dumbass ville, the Ash of AOD being more impulsive, selfish and dumb, causing the entire second half simply by getting the words wrong. As such instead of having Ash properly reflect on his second chance to save linda we get the wiseman refering to her as the cure for his "beaver feaver"
Tumblr media
And him spewing out catchprhases, snark and suptidity. He's still Ash so we still get plenty of badassery including him destroying some woodland creature deadites on the way, and it's what keeps the comci from being out and out bad: while the art dosen't do it favors, ther'es still enough of the Rami-Style slapstick magic here and htere to go around> ti's not as good, again I don't think the artist quite got how to capture the deadites, but it's still not terrible.
So we end issue 1 with our heroes escaping and with issue 2 we jump forward a bit to the awesome equipment shed from Evil Dead 2, one of the most iconic locations. They even have the Freddy Kruger glove which kicks ass.. and provided a nice back door for later as while Ash hasn't gotten to fuck with the Chuck just yet, he did square off with Freddy and Jason, something I do intend to cover one of these days.
Ash rechainsaws his hand , having used the prostetic from AOD he built till now, which I admit is anothe rlost opprotunity as they don't homage the shot from evil dead II of him putting it together but him emerging ready to go only to nearly chop off the wiseman's head is classic evil dead stuff and helps make up for it.
What sadly can't be made up for is him seeing Linda again and trying to save her.. onlyf or it to turn out to be the evil dead. And then snap into trying to kill her like the love of his life turning evil on him AGAIN is no big deal. Sa'll good bro.
See this is where trying to use the style of writing fo AOD for EVERYTHING really weakens the film. Dont' get me wrong, while I prefer Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness isn't bad at all, and i'ts more goofy adventure movie tone likely meshes well later down the line: you can have ash do weird shit like team up with Barrack Obama and Xena, fight Herbet West or hunt down dracula. That's fine. Those stories likely fit the tone of AOD. But you really can't go back to the cabin and try to act like none of that shit hurt ash or traumtized him. He lost all his friends, and Scotty, the love of his life, and then MORE people on top of that. While Evil Dead II was more of a comedy April's death was played for horror and it was still scary and heartwrenching at times. You can ballance the pathos of Ash'es torment by the dead with him getting into a looney tunes battles with his own hand. It can be done. It's why this franchise keeps coming back from the dead again and again and I don't judge all the comics after this on this one and look forward to trying some. Trying to put dumb horny action hero ash in the palce of tormented but still awesome goofy hero ash just dosen't work.
We do get a decent if flawed sequence next, and one that explains the title and you likely saw coming: Ash Vs Ash, with Past!Ash assuming Present!Ash is a cabin hallucination. It's a good setup for a fight and gives us this amazing image
Tumblr media
And has plenty of great moments, from Past!Ash cutting off his future selfs chainsaw hand, to the old wiseman fumbling around, to a dual wielding past ash … ramming himself into a corner. IT's great stuff. Problem is they DON'T really make the two ashes that easy to tell apart. initially I thought there were NO differences but Past!Ash has his shirt torn. But the two still look so similar it's very hard to tell whose who aside from the dialogue, which for an action scene isn't really ideal. It was easier to follow this go round but I shoudln't need an instruction manual to read a comic book.
That said this is where the comic goes from very clumsy, hard to follow and wasting opportunity to fun and enjoyable. The first issue and 2/3 of an issue aren't TERRIBLE, but this last half is more suited for the wacky tone their going for while still not forgetting how seroius or horrifying this situation is. Ash bumbles with the book.. and instead sends them to the alternate ending, a horrible wasteland ruled by the dead. There's also some slave women because this was the early 2000's and every other comic assumed you needed boobs in there or geeks would throw it out a window or something.
It does work well to both impart on Ash "Hey moron, shit be serious", and to trust the wiseman. We also get this gem of a line
Tumblr media
So ash agrees to follow his lead to finding the sealing place of the necronomicon, then he'll do the hard part. So they plan to book a plane , with a great line from Ash...
Tumblr media
While ash's evil hand from the past follows them.
We start issue 3 with the story all about how the Wisemans life got flip turned upside down. WHy he didn't tell Ash on the drive to the woods or from the woods to the plane, I don't know. It's simple yet horrific: thanks to Ash's time shenanigans EVERYONE from army of darkness but him got possed, includnig SHiela whose in a skimpy outfit because again, need that boob quota or shit's going out windows I guess. At presnt in a plane Ash is destracted by a creature on the wing which Wise Man oddly dosen't take seriously but at least goes to the pilots.. giving us THIS franchise all time great gag
Tumblr media
Like I said , the back half of the story picks things up, and really fits the comedic tone way better, witht he wiseman accidently blowing a hole in the plane and our heroes finding an unsettling face growing out of a tree stump
Tumblr media
Freshly Cooked Face leads them in the right direction to some cliffs, and we get a nice heart to heart between Ash and the Wiseman, with Ash admitting he may not be able to protect him, while the Wise Man assures him "I shall not die by your hand for int he past or the future I shall always be your friend" which is both sweet… and poor phrasing as he gets stabbed in the back by the hand Knowby style. It's heartbreaking, as Ash silently digs his grave for two panels.. and then .. we get this
Tumblr media
THIS is what I wanted from the first half: Ash dealing with the sheer weight of what he's been going through for the last few days. And not just this story: given the timeline the events of the Evil Dead Trilogy ALL occured over a week at MOST, with the first two occuring over TWO DAYS. Remember in that timespan everyone Ash knows dies, and even cutting it down to just Linda as Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness did, and this comic goes with, he lost the love of his life, had to fight his hand, went insane, got possed, got unpossed, and watched a bunch of people die, then got flung back in time, enslaved, fought more deadites, and came back only to set of fthese events. The guy has had maybe a few moments to relax over this nightmare of a day. So him breaking down again felt.. right. He lost someone AGAIN, coudln't save someone AGAIN and by god if he coudlnt' do that much he'll fucking end this if nothing else.
We soon get some fun but enough time was spent on him mourning Wise Man that it dosen't feel like mood whiplash. We get Ash Indying it up, which i'm happy for: i'm sure had Rami had the budget he would've done somethign like this and Bruce still got to fight a mummy with the previously covered Bubba Hotep, but ash growing a giant beard then fightin ga buncho f mummies just.. reallyf its with the franchise. As does more hand slapstick of course. We also catch up with past ash as he finishes army of darkness… and as his hand slinks of to become MUMMY EVIL ASH
Tumblr media
This is what I meant: you either gotta go full tilt rediculous, if still with some depth or sink into the horror and while they tried doing the former it dosen't work with a cabin in the woods, as said cabin has so much trauma for Ash it's weird he's not more phased by this. In contrast S-Marts Employee of the month carving his way through deadite mummies? MUMMY Ash? That.. that is truly
Tumblr media
So we're onto the final issue, with Ash trying to force his way through a puzzle. Naturally this results in no air, and I mean how's he going to breathe with no air, how can he hear when we ain't there, no air. No air. Also little green ash's because FUCK YES.
Ash eventually puts the book in a slot for it but the ole Williams Luck strickes again adn it instead takes things outside.. and he's too busy to go play fetch as Mummy ash has rasied an army of the dead, and while we get a cool fight between the two including Ash suckering The Bad Ash with his mechanical fist, he's soon overwhelmed as they beg him to join us and die. He quickly plan chainsaw's his way out of it but by the The Bad Ash has the book.
Just as it looks it for Ash… cue… Ash as hsi past self rides in with Arthur, the Wise Man and a whole fuckload of guys on horses to turn the tide, stabbing his evil self in the back. Wait shoudlnt' this be called Ashes 2 Ashes Funk 3 Ashes? Eh, Sematnics I guess. The two ashes time merge and we get a kickass battle as Arthur clears the way for his best bro Ash.
With the Wise Man's advice, ash creates a ring of fire to cast the present day book into hell, cleverly using the gas cap from his chainsaw to ignite it aroudn the bad ash, sending him and his minons straight to hell…. and into one pissed off Imps office I assume.
So we end with everyone going back in.. and Ash being ash forgot to toss the book in. We also get a great bit of the wiseman, when ash dosen't show his alternate future self, realizing he's dead. Ash rides off into over a hundred more issues as we end this series.
Ashes 2 Ashes is a VERY uneven mini series: The first half wastes a BRILLIANT premise both due to rights issues out of it's control and tonal issues VERY much in it's control and has very messy paneling in a few spots, but the second half is a fun, kickass adventure tale in the style of Army of Darkness that more than makes up for it. The art is passable, nothing special but nothing that drags it down. Overall if your curious it's a quick and fun enough read to be worth the time and not a half bad way to kick things off. Not the best start these comics could've asked for, but still pretty groovy. Next time we take a look at another attempt to start over again with only one movie to go off of later this month. Until then follow for more reviews, consider joining my patreon, sorry I havne't been read morning lately (I didn't know the whole continue reading thing was just on the dash, my bad, ) and thanks for reading.

I joke but I was a Spawn guy growing up. Angela didn't do much in the 100 issues I read (mostly because of the rights debacle with Gaiman. The most I remember her doing was assisting Spawn during his final battle against Malebogia before dying & Spawn taking her body to the Angels before telling them to stuff it.
I think she had something to do with Medival Spawn too but the collections I owned didn't have her first appearance or her mini-series.
neat!
I only read a few issues of Spawn here and there. None with Angela in them.
I thought Angela was kind of corny at first, looking like some combination of Red Sonja and Vampirella in that scant outfit… but I came to really like her in Guardians and really liked her solo series.

The Secret Garden - Modern TV show pilot.
Okay let me explain - idea isnt finished but i gotta explain what im up too. I am a HUGGGGGE secret garden fan - top favourite novel ever since i was little, adore the bbc mini series, the animated film, the 1993 film was just beautiful... but the new film had a few things that just didnt work for me (real magic being the main one.... the magic being real just ruined what the theme of the book was.) so in talking about it with a pal we got chatting about how we'd adapt the book and i thought what about a moderniseation - like the Misselthwaite Archives but more!
So i sat down and tried just that; this is the opening main scenes but yeah thoughts?

Into The Garden
EPISODE 101 - Welcome to Misselthwaite
Written by; Sarah R Cubitt
ACT ONE
FADE IN:
EXT. LONDON - night
A downpour of rain. Rumble of thunder.
A High-End hotel. Lit up. Bustling with business.
Bell-boys with umbrella’s usher people hurriedly into the building from their car’s. Everyone is in high spirits.
UPBEAT music is softly playing from an upper Suite.
LAUGHTER and the CLINK of glasses. A celebratory party in full swing.
INT. high-end hotel - mary’s room - Night
Darkened hotel bedroom.
Unmade bed. An antique vase of SINGULAR RED ROSES - the only personal touch.
From the light of the cracked open door, the sounds of music and laughter increase.
INT. high-end hotel - upper suite floor - Night
A young girl, dressing gown and slippers on, sat in shadow at the top of the grand stairs.
MARY LENNOX (then 16), a stubborn, rebellious girl, is watching in interest as well-dressed adults glide into a large party. Her gaze on two figures in particular.
MRS ROSALIND LENNOX, who is meeting and greeting guests. In her element. Dressed to the nines, the bell of the ball. The most beautiful woman there - and she knows it.
Stiffly stood next to her is OFFICER ALBERT LENNOX, in military uniform. Clearly uncomfortable.
Albert glances up and spots Mary watching from the bannister. A genuine smile creeps onto his face. He winks to her - having caught her watching.
Mary smiles at this attention.
Rosalind follows his gaze up. She sees straight through Mary.
Mary’s smile drops.
Rosalind puts a hand on Albert’s arm.
Albert’s face falls as he turns his attention back to the guests.
Mary gets to her feet, scowling down at her mother, before moving off.
INT. high-end hotel - master bedroom SUITE - Night
A door CREAKS open. A sliver of light.
Mary tiptoes in, she looks around curiously.
An extravagant room.
Unlike Mary’s room, this one feels lived in. Clothes scattered about, a cluttered vanity, bed unmade. Personal touches everywhere.
Mary passes a table overflowing with photos in shiny frames. Mainly photos of Rosalind and Albert at events, or Rosalind on modelling shoots. The only photos of Mary are in older frames pushed to the back, hidden, and only her father is present in them with her.
Mary wanders over to the cluttered vanity.
Mary investigates her mother's things - greedily taking in the small glimpse into her mother's glamorous life.
Mary opens a music box. Waltz of the Flowers plays. An empty space where a dancer would be - forcefully snapped.
Among the bits and bobs inside is a FOLDED PICTURE.
Mary glances at the door. Just in case. No one is coming.
Tentatively Mary picks up the picture and unfolds it.
The picture shows FOUR PEOPLE stood in a garden, an ENGLISH MANOR house in the background. Young Rosalind and Albert are smiling happily with two others. A female, hair windswept, wide grin, arm looped with Albert’s, LILY LENNOX, and a male, smartly dressed, sickly pale, walking cane in hand, ARCHIBALD CRAVEN, looking adoringly at Lily.
Mary turns the photo, written on the back; “Lily and Archie’s engagement”.
MARY (whisper) So you’re my Aunt Lily
Mary drinks the photo hypnotized, her focus entirely on her Aunt - the family link between the two clear. Mary could be her double if she wasn’t so sour.
Mary is broken from her trance as someone approaches the room angrily.
ROSALIND (off-screen) Honestly, the things I do for that bloody vulture of a woman.
Mary dives under the bed to hide.
From under the bed; a pair of Louboutin heels and the bottom of a silk gown enter the room, expertly navigating their way to the vanity.
Mary peers out to watch her mother.
Rosalind throws back her head. Downing her drink. Clattered down the empty champagne flute on the vanity.
Studying the vanity, noting the music box is open.
A dark look crosses her face.
Rosalind bangs shut the music box. Music cuts off.
Rosalind lets out a sigh, forcing herself to relax before she glances at her reflection - taking in her perfect appearance.
KNOCK KNOCK.
UNKNOWN MALE Everything alright Mrs Lennox? Your husband sent me to find you.
Rosalind looks around flustered. A shadowy figure is seen by the room’s door.
Rosalind picks up an EXPENSIVE looking bracelet.
ROSALIND Oh, here it is! Sonja said she wanted to see what Berty bought me for our anniversary.
Rosalind lets out fake laugh before elegantly leaving the room.
The door CLICKS shut.
Mary lets out a breath.
Mary scrambles out from under the bed.
Mary CREAKS open the room door. She checks the hallway. Empty.
INT. high-end hotel - upper suite floor - Night
Swiftly Mary creeps back into her room.
INT. high-end hotel - mary’s room - Night
The room door is left ajar.
Mary’s eyes flutter shut to the sounds of the music and laughter, clutching the photo she found to her chest.
INT. high end hotel - mary’s room - Night
FLASH of lighting. THUNDEROUS rain.
SCREAMS are heard from downstairs.
Mary scrambles from her bed in a sleepy daze.
From the crack of the door she sees…
People frantically running from room to room.
BANGING. SCREAMING. CHAOS.
Backing up in fear she runs to her bed. Hiding in the duvet, her hands to her ears willing the noise to stop.
Images blur and distort as if Mary has purposefully forgotten what happened exactly…
Screams are heard from all sides. Things clattering to the ground in people’s rush to escape.
Siren’s blaring. Camera’s flashing. Utter chaotic panic.
An echo of a voice is heard above the rest, frantic, but weakening.
ALBERT (echoing/worried) Mary! My Mary! Mary!!
The echoing of the voice gets louder and starts to change…
AGATHA CRAWFORD (annoyed) Mary. Mary Lennox.
INT. train carriage - late Afternoon
AGATHA CRAWFORD Mary Lennox! Wake up girl!
Mary (now 17) bolts awake with a start.
Mary glances around. She is in a train carriage. There are no screams of terror, just screams of young children.
Mary’s uneven breathing calms. She is safe.
Agatha’s attention is now on her squabbling children.
Mary’s shoulders slump as she falls back against her seat.
She glances at Agatha’s LOUD children with a look of disgust.
Mary rubs at her eyes before glancing at the window.
EXT. ENGLISH countryside - late Afternoon
A train is seen racing through the frost-covered countryside. Miles and miles of brown farmland on one side and a cliff with the sea crashing angrily on the other.
INT. train carriage - late Afternoon
AGATHA CRAWFORD For goodness sake girl, our station is next. Get your things together.
Mary whips her head around and scowls at the older woman.
Agatha misses the look due to another fight breaking out between her boys.
YOUNG GIRL Do you like it?
Mary looks around for the voice.
Sat opposite her is a small girl - adorably cute with pigtails.
Mary shoots her a confused look.
The little girl points out the window to the countryside.
YOUNG GIRL Out there. Mama says it's different from where you come from.
MARY (bluntly) No. I hate it.
Mary’s American accent is clearly heard.
The little girl looks shocked - not the expected answer. Thankfully she is saved a response as -
AGATHA CRAWFORD (calling) Jessica dear, come here.
Agatha ushers the girl over. Agatha and the boy’s next to her now in jackets.
Jessica glances to Mary before scarpering over to her mother - who proceeds to put on her jacket.
Mary lets out a sigh. Glancing out the window once again before getting to her feet.
EXT. COASTAL train station PLATFORM - late Afternoon
The train pulls into a station. Waves can be heard crashing in the distance.
Train doors open. A small crowd leave the train.
Wind whipping them all, causing people to pull jackets closer to them as they hurry off the platform.
Agatha and her children climb off. Agatha fussing them.
Mary climbs off behind the family.
Mary carries a single suitcase and hosting a backpack onto her shoulder. She glances around the bare-bones station. Unimpressed.
Agatha marches her children to the exit of the platform.
Agatha turns to see Mary isn’t following them.
AGATHA CRAWFORD For goodness sake girl, come on!
Agatha looks to her watch as she continues to off the platform.
Mary scowls but follows the woman and her children.
EXT. COASTAL train station - late Afternoon
Agatha and her children are stood at one end of the empty station entrance, and Mary is stood at the other - as far away as she could get from the family.
Agatha keeps looking at her watch then at the car park entrance - clearly expecting someone.
The two young boys next to her point to Mary before whispering to each other giggling.
The two start singing teasingly.
TWO YOUNG BOYS: (singing) Mary, Mary quite contrary, How does your garden grow? With silver bells, and cockle shells, And pretty maids all in a row.
Little Jessica can’t help but giggle at her brother’s teasing.
Mary glares at them all.
The two boys seem happy at getting a reaction. Laughing and continuing louder.
Little Jessica joins in. Quietly, heart not in it.
CHILDREN; (singing, louder) Mary, Mary quite contrary, How does your garden grow? With silver bells, and cockle shells, And pretty maids all in a row.
Mary scowls, rummaging through her bag. Pulling out headphones putting them in to drown out their singing.
Suddenly, a LAND ROVER rumbles into the car park.
The children’s singing trails off.
Mary pulls out one of the headphones. Eyes on the car.
The Land Rover SCREECHES to a stop. The engine switches off.
SARAH MEDLOCK, late early 40s, A formidable woman.

Selene is the oldest known human mutant. Functionally immortal, her millennia-long life is attributed to her ability to drain the life essence from other beings to extend her own existence indefinitely. Her name derives from the ancient lunar deity Selene, daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia. Claiming to have already been old when modern mankind was just emerging, Selene was born over 17,000 years ago somewhere in what is now Central Europe, "after the Oceans swallowed Atlantis and before the rise of the Aryas". Her tribe's elders recognized her for what she was and commanded the entire tribe, including her own mother, to sacrifice their lives to feed her.[3]
Hyborian AgeEdit
Selene was revealed to have been an old enemy of the sorcerer Kulan Gath.[4] Kulan Gath was active during the Hyborian Age (before any recorded civilizations) and is known to have faced both Conan the Barbarian and Red Sonja. In fact, Sonja reportedly managed to kill him and his spirit would not manifest again until the modern era.[5] Thus, Selene was active at least as early as the Hyborian age.
Rome and EliphasEdit
Selene came to reside in Rome during the height of its empire. She approached Eliphas, a well-respected senator whose wife had left him for a general named Mascius. Selene offered him immortality in exchange for helping her kill and absorb every soul in Rome. Eliphas went about drawing pentagrams and performing rituals at several locations in the city, but warned a small girl to get her family out. The girl's father alerted the authorities and Eliphas and Selene were captured before the spell could be carried out. Just before they were burned at the stake Selene killed the guards. She then cursed Eliphas for his perceived betrayal with an eternal life of torture, transforming him into a vampire-like creature. Eliphas was buried alive for 700 years until a farmer discovered him in his field.[6]
Nova RomaEdit
In relatively recent times, Selene was trapped for centuries in the Amazon in the Romanesque town of Nova Roma. She was worshipped as a goddess and worked to maintain the isolation of the town so she could maintain control. Eliphas, having at some point in time changed his name to "Eli Bard," finally locates Selene in Nova Roma. Still in love with her despite her curse, Bard realizes that he must make an offering to her before he approaches her. She also was able to marry several times and have descendants, including Amara Aquilla. Her most recent known husband was Marcus Domitius Gallio, a senator of Nova Roma.
In Nova Roma, Selene attempted to kill Amara Aquilla. She knocked Amara into a lava pool, thereby releasing her latent mutant powers, as Magma. Selene fought and defeated Magma, and plotted to turn Danielle Moonstar into a psychic vampire like herself and conquer the world. Selene fought the New Mutants, and was cast into lava and buried alive.[7]
Becoming the Black QueenEdit
Selene directed her worshippers to undertake tasks that eventually allowed her to leave Nova Roma. She made her way to New York City, where she encountered Juggernaut at a bar. Selene planned to seduce and murder him, but was prevented when Wolverine manipulated a bar-room brawl between Juggernaut and Colossus. She then discovered the existence of Rachel Summers, whom she sought to turn into a slave only to be defeated by the X-Men. Prior to the X-Men saving her, Selene had tracked Rachel down to the home of a young man named Nicholas Damiano who had let the homeless Rachel spend the night at his place. Selene savagely murdered the young man, resulting in Rachel swearing revenge against Selene.[8]
With help from one of her worshippers, Friedrich Von Roehm, Selene made contact with the Hellfire Club and forced the group to take her on as the new Black Queen. She became critical in the X-Men's attempt to stop Kulan Gath, after he conquered New York City with a reality-altering spell though she ultimately attempted to doublecross the X-Men in order to steal Gath's talisman of power.[9]
Selene's time with the Hellfire Club was a turbulent time, due to her contempt for Sebastian Shaw and quite open desire to rule the Hellfire Club as its sole leader. This led Shaw and Emma Frost to conspire to kill Selene by manipulating and training the young mutant Firestar to assassinate her. This failed when Firestar realized what their plan.[10]
Selene and the Hellfire Club's relationship with the X-Men came to a head with Rachel Summers making an unauthorized assassination attempt on Selene. Wolverine felt honor-bound to prevent Rachel from becoming a murderer, and so, saved Selene's life by severely injuring Summers. Selene herself was enraged, and used the incident to force the Lords Cardinal to agree to hunt and kill Rachel. A battle over this issue immediately commenced between the X-Men and Lords Cardinal, but it was unexpectedly halted when it drew the attention of Nimrod, the super-sentinel who had murdered Selene's assistant Rhoem,[11] and was as bent on killing the X-Men and the Lords Cardinal. The Lords Cardinal and the X-Men hastily agreed to a truce, fighting well-enough to cause Nimrod to flee.
After this battle, in the pages of New Mutants, much was made about Selene having secret plans involving Nova Roma and Magma. Due to her love for Empath, Magma left the New Mutants to join the Hellions, only to be called home by her father to enter into an arranged marriage with a resident there. Magma's escort back home to Nova Roma turned out to be Empath, who ultimately decided to stay in the city with her. The two became lovers and Magma was freed from her arranged marriage plans so that she could be with him.[volume & issue needed]
Writer changes and the book's transition into X-Force caused the storyline to be aborted.[citation needed] Furthermore, it was revealed in New Warriors #31, via Empath, that Nova Roma was nothing more than an elaborate lie, concocted by Selene several decades prior. In a desperate bid to relive happier days in which she lived in ancient Rome, Selene arranged for hundreds of people to be kidnapped and taken to the jungles of the Amazon, to a city constructed per her designs. There she was somehow able to utterly brainwash her prisoners to believe themselves descendants of ancient Romans living in the Amazon. Magma was one of these kidnapped and brainwashed souls, according to Empath. The city was disbanded and the residents returned to their regular lives across the globe.
Years later, due to Chris Claremont wishing to undo writer Fabian Nieciza's dismantling of the concept of Nova Roma,[citation needed] Claremont ignored said story and wrote Magma as she had been originally. He later had Magma make cryptic references to having been manipulated into believing Nova Roma was a lie by parties unknown that sought to hurt Magma. Furthermore, the five-issue mini-series "New Mutants Forever" revealed that Claremont originally planned on revealing Magma to be Selene's granddaughter. This family connection would be stated as well (with no build-up) in New Mutants V3 #6-8, which had Selene resurrect Magma's teammate Cypher to try to kill Magma. Furthermore, it was strongly implied during "Necrosha" that Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost manipualted the Empath/Magma relationship in order to get Empath inside Nova Roma.[volume & issue needed] In the event that Selene struck first and eliminated both, Empath would then use his powers to dismantle the city via convincing the residents that their lives were lies concocted by Selene.
Selene ultimately was the deciding vote to vote Sebastian Shaw out of the Hellfire Club, when tension between Shaw and the newly recruited White King Magneto came to blows.[12] Unknown to Magneto or Emma Frost, however, Selene had decided that she no longer had any need for the Club and began plotting its destruction by gathering an army of young mutants, with help from the mutant omnipath known as the Gamesmaster, calling them the Upstarts. Under her authority, the Upstarts engaged in a killing spree that led to many presumed deaths (Magneto, Sebastian Shaw, Donald Pierce, and the Reavers), mortal injuries (Emma Frost), and outright deaths (the Hellions). Selene manipulated her young followers with the promise of a game, where each murder committed would land them points that would ultimately lead to them being granted a prize, described as "being the next best thing to immortality" by the Gamemaster. However, with another writer change, Selene's involvement with the Upstarts was cut short as she herself was betrayed by Trevor Fitzroy. Selene was kept in a torture device that repeatedly ripped her flesh from her body (to attract the attention of the Gamesmaster, who took advantage of the situation to proclaim himself the new leader of the Upstarts). She would be freed by Amanda Sefton, though the torture left her weak and scarred.[volume & issue needed]
Needing to replenish her power, Selene first attacked and killed the other surviving Externals. Though she was opposed by X-Force, she managed to complete the slaughter and knock out the mutants, until Cable arrived. Selene's attempt to absorb Cable's life backfired when she touched his techno-organic arm and she was forced to flee to maintain her power. Shortly afterwards, she tried to access the power of a mystical convergence using a Runestaff made from the roots of Yggdrasil, the Norse World Tree. She came to the Exploding Colossal Man festival in New Mexico, but was again opposed by X-Force, who managed to wrest the Runestaff away from her and destroy the Colossal Man mannequin it activated. Selene missed her opportunity for ultimate power and vowed vengeance on X-Force.[volume & issue needed]
She next appeared back in Brazil, where she had tracked Sunspot, along with Deviants posing as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. She lured Sunspot to her defense, and offered him a position of power in the Hellfire Club, which he refused, regardless of the illusions with which she tempted him. However, Sunspot went along with Selene to stop the Deviants in the Damocles Foundation from activating a Celestial Gatherer. Selene herself was attacked by the Sword strike team, but she managed to cast a spell that devolved them back to lizards. Along with the rest of X-Force, Selene was able to usurp control of the machinery that activated the Gatherer, but Moonstar and Arcadia destroyed the Celestial artifact before Selene could access its power.[volume & issue needed]
Selene then returned to her post as the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club, after striking a deal with the demon Blackheart and seemingly throwing out the rest of the Inner Circle. She offered Sunspot the position of Black Rook, which he initially refused but then accepted when Selene and Blackheart revealed that his doing so would allow them to resurrect the spirit of Juliana Sandoval, the girl who died saving Sunspot's life when he first joined the New Mutants. Sunspot had no choice to accept and become Selene's protégé.[volume & issue needed]
However, with Sebastian Shaw's return to the Hellfire Club, Selene was somehow trapped inside the catacombs under the Club. However, she gained limited mobility from an alliance with Donald Pierce. When the X-Men, including Rachel Summers arrived, during a membership change in the Hellfire Club, Selene plotted to use Rachel to completely free herself. She followed Rachel to Hong Kong via a transport portal and saved her from being corrupted by a telepathic agent of Courtney Ross, who was trying to become the next White Queen. This move was only a prelude to Selene taking over Rachel's mind, but Marvel Girl was too strong for Selene and expelled her, keeping Selene trapped for a time beneath the Hellfire Club headquarters.[volume & issue needed]
After M-DayEdit
Selene was one of the few mutants to retain her powers after the events of M-Day.[13]
Selene, disguised as an old woman, befriends Wither and they live together in Mutant Town.[14] She encourages him to use his powers and not be afraid of his natural gifts. She then asks him if he would use his powers to save his or her life. She had been killing a large number of people by draining their life-forces, and during her last feeding her disguise was spotted by a witness. She reveals to Wither that Laurie has died, while he was away. Later she is attacked by the police and managed to kill two of them before being shot multiple times. Wither arrives and kills the other two officers, only for Selene to drop her disguise, telling him she is immortal and that they are two of a kind and should be together. She tells Wither that she will be his queen if he agrees, then kisses him, and he consents.[15]
Eli Bard's offeringEdit
Selene's relationship with Eli Bard is explained by Warpath to the other members of X-Force. It is revealed he had originally planned to sacrifice the Purifiers to Selene but changed his plans upon seeing Bastion reprogram an offspring of Magus. Using the Technarch transmode virus he reanimated the corpses in the burial grounds of the Apache tribe that he had decimated decades earlier along with Caliban. He presented them to Selene for the purpose of finding other dead mutants and resurrecting them by the same means, so that Bard can sacrifice them and their powers to her.[16]
NecroshaEdit
Main article: Necrosha
One week before the event of Necrosha, Selene has the recently resurrected Destiny brought before her where she asks what her future holds.[17]
Selene returns to the place of her birth in central Europe, accompanied by new Inner Circle, consisting of Blink, Senyaka, Mortis, Wither, and Eli Bard. She sets her plan into motion of becoming a goddess with her Inner Circle; they go to the New York branch of the Hellfire Club, where they slaughter everyone present. Selene then targets others who she feels have obstructed, or otherwise failed, her in her quest for divinity, namely Sebastian Shaw, Donald Pierce, Emma Frost (against whom she especially holds a grudge because of Frost's use of the "Black Queen" codename when working for the Dark X-Men), the X-Men, and Magma. Caliban and Thunderbird then lead her to the ruins of Genosha. Selene dubs the ruins Necrosha and swears that her journey will end here.[18] While most of the resurrected mutants attack the X-Men and Utopia, Selene is seen with Eli Bard resurrecting the massacred residents of Genosha, with Cerebro detecting the rise of mutant numbers in millions (the first life-signs detected by Bastion's computers include Spoor, Katu, Unus, REM-RAM, Static, and Barnacle).[19] There is a major problem though: a lot of the deceased have been depowered, despite having been killed BEFORE M-day. Wither and Mortis explain what happened and the Coven begins to set up base at Necrosha. It turns out that Selene can't do the ritual yet, because Eli Bard lost the knife that was required to do it. She then dispatches her crew and they end up taking the knife back, capturing Warpath in the process. Once Bard gives Selene the knife and proclaims his eternal love for her, Selene stabs Eli, killing him (much to Wither's delight). Warpath is eventually rescued by the Vanisher but Selene absorbs the many souls around her, turning light blue and growing in size. She finally becomes the goddess she had sought to be for so long. Turning to her followers, she commands them to get her more souls.[20] Warpath was able to destroy Selene by plunging his dagger into her chest, after teaching X-Force the Ghost Dance, a ritual meant to kill evil spirits such as Selene. Shocked that her moment of godhood was taken away so quickly, Selene explodes into rays of light.[20]
Sometime after Selene's death, Blink attempted to resurrect the Black Queen. Blink was eventually stopped by Emma Frost and a small team of X-Men (consisting of Blindfold, Pixie, Husk, Warpath) along with former Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange who managed successfully to purge Blink of Selene's corrupted influence.[21]
ReturnEdit
It was later revealed that Selene's body and soul had been preserved as airborne particles and somehow stored in stasis in a vault located somewhere in New York City. Lady Deathstrike and the Enchantress gained access to the vault and through the newly enhanced magic granted to her by the sentient virus, Arkea, she was able to fully restore Selene to physical life for the purpose of adding her to the newly formed Sisterhood of Mutants.[22]
Power EliteEdit
In the aftermath of the "Secret Empire," Selene has publicly become head of the White House's "Task Force of Faith-Based Initiatives", and joined the "Power Elite", an alliance of powerful people including Thunderbolt Ross, Baron von Strucker, and Alexa Lukin.[23] She also assisted in the resurrection of Alexa's husband Aleksander Lukin who also joined the Power Elite. Though the side-effect also revived a remnant of the Red Skull's mind that was in Aleksander.[24]
Dawn of XEdit
Selene was eventually welcomed to the new mutant island of Krakoa, created by Xavier, Magneto and Moira. She entered through the teleportation gateway alongside other villainous and fractious mutants, who had been invited to join the nation in order to heal mutantdom and start over as a whole species together.[25]
Selene alongside Emplate, had been tasked by Xavier with measuring the amount of psychic energy that Krakoa would take from its inhabitants. A similar protocol was put in place for them both as they also need to nourish on mutants for survival.[

Berserker Unbound Creators Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato on Teaming Together Again, Future Creator-Owned Projects, and More By ADAM BARNHARDT - December 13, 2019 05:32 pm EST Not long after teaming up on Marvel's Thanos, comic creators Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato reteamed for Berserker Unbound, a gruesome creator-owned book the combines the world's of Conan the Barbarian with a modern superhero tale. The series' initial four-issue mini-series just wrapped and shortly after the calendar turns to 2020, Dark Horse will be releasing the entire story in a collected hardcover edition. Ahead of the release, ComicBook.com spoke with Lemire and Deodato through e-mail, and here's what they had to say about Berserker, creative liberties, and more! Jeff, you’ve got plenty of irons in the fire, right? Continually building out the Black Hammer-verse for Dark Horse, some projects for DC, and all loads of other creator-owned projects. With so many things of all shapes and sizes, where’s an idea like Berserker Unbound come from? Jeff Lemire: Berserker came from a simple desire to work with Mike again, and to do something different and fun that played to all of his strengths. I had never really done a fantasy-type story, and grew up watching reruns of the Conan and Red Sonja movies on Saturday afternoons when I was a kid. I thought it would be an interesting genre to play with and for Mike to bring to life. Mike, Berserker is one of the first projects you had the chance to work on after announcing you’d be leaving Marvel. Certainly, since it’s a creator-owned book, there are fewer requisites when dealing with the characters and making sure it’s on-brand and the like. Tell us a little bit about the freedoms involved with something like Berserker Unbound rather than doing, say Savage Avengers or Infinity Wars. Mike Deodato Jr.: I must confess, I was not used to so much creative freedom, and I loved it. Being able to decide whatever I wanna do with our character is so reassuring as an artist. I was definitely able—and felt willing—to experiment more than when I was working on other books. For the week of 17 June 2019
Quick Bits:
A Walk Through Hell #11 gives us a bit more insight into Shaw’s childhood and further fallout from the investigation, even as things seem to get nastier in the hell they’ve found themselves in. The fields of bones from Goran Sudžuka and Ive Svorcina are horrifying.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Age of X-Man: NextGen #5 is a bit of a gut punch for a final issue in this series. Some great art by Lucas Werneck and Jason Keith, though.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Aquaman #49 concludes the “Mother Shark” two-parter as Arthur gets answers on who he is and how he died. This is a huge one. Kelly Sue DeConnick, Viktor Bogdanovic, Jonathan Glapion, Daniel Henriques, Ryan Winn, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles do an incredible job with this story. Beautiful and heartbreaking.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Assassin Nation #4 has the remaining assassins possibly figure out the entire plan as they take down another crime boss in this penultimate issue. Kyle Starks, Erica Henderson, and Deron Bennett have been delivering a highly entertaining series here with great art and a wicked sense of humour. Every book needs a Fuck Tarkington.

Barbarella/Dejah Thoris #4 is the end to what has been a great mini from Leah Williams,  Germán García, Addison Duke, and Crank! Very interesting use of time travel for this story.
| Published by Dynamite
Tumblr media
Batman #73 sees Tom King, Mikel Janín, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles reveal as to just how demented Thomas Wayne is in part four of “The Fall and the Fallen”. His motivation is understandable, but this is insane.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Black Badge #11 reveals a lot of the remaining secrets that we’ve guessed about previously as to what exactly is going on with the entire Black Badge organization. Maybe. I’m still expecting more twists from Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, and Jim Campbell when the series ends next issue.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Tumblr media
Captain America #11 sees Steve’s jailbreak from the Myrmidon in earnest, while Sharon and the Daughters of Liberty run the operation. Beautiful artwork from Adam Kubert and Matt Milla.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Daredevil #7 reminds us that Matt Murdock carries more guilt than an entire Catholic archdiocese. There’s a very compelling depth and complexity that Chip Zdarsky is bringing to this story, moving us away from the typical superheroics.

Tumblr media
Elephantmen 2261: The Pentalion Job #2 enacts the heist of the pentalions in the second part of this story from Richard Starkings and Alex Medellin. Hip Flask raises some interesting questions as all of the Bond actors seem to meet their end.

Tumblr media
Excellence #2 is another excellent issue. Brandon Thomas, Khary Randolph, Emilio Lopez, and Deron Bennett are developing Spencer and his history, his family, and relation with the hierarchy of the Aegis in a very compelling way.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Tumblr media
Fairlady #3 is the first issue that doesn’t really end “clean”. It’s still a single issue story, but the mystery remains and isn’t tidied up by the end. It’s another murder mystery, with an adventurer impersonating a Conan analogue. Like the previous issues, this is a great story from Brian Schirmer, Claudia Balboni, Shari Chankhamma, and David Bowman.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Faithless #3 continues to be very strange. Very, very strange. As Faith’s roommate is murdered by what seems like a wolf from her phone, her relationship with Poppy, and then she has sex with Poppy’s father. As I said, strange. I’m still not entirely sure what Brian Azzarello, Maria Llovet, and AndWorld Design are trying to do with this story.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Tumblr media
Gideon Falls #14 begins playing with time along with the alternate realities as Burke lands in a reality “closer to the centre” and is given a purpose to find “the five”. Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino, Dave Stewart, and Steve Wands are doing some amazing work here.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Guardians of the Galaxy #6 concludes “The Final Gauntlet” from Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, David Curiel, and Cory Petit as the Guardians, all of the Guardians, take on Hela and the Black Order to try to prevent the resurrection of Thanos. It’s suitably epic.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Hit-Girl: Season 2 #5 kicks off the “Hong Kong” arc from Daniel Way, Goran Parlov, Giada Marchisio, and Clem Robins. It may well be the arc with the most narration so far, but it doesn’t detract from the usual over-the-top violence and action in the start of this story of Mindy trying to take down the Liu Triad, with rather humorous results, it rather enhances it with some nice introspection.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Justice League #26 is part one of “Apex Predator” from James Tynion IV, Javier Fernandez, Hi-Fi, and Tom Napolitano. The Justice League are pitching to the stars in order to stem the tide of Perpetua’s plans and the impending Doom brought on by the “Year of the Villain”. But everyone’s wondering if it’s just shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Last Stop on the Red Line #2 is still very strange. Paul Maybury, Sam Lotfi, John Rauch, and Adam Pruett are crafting an intriguing murder mystery here as Torres and her new partner continue to try to solve the crimes on the subways, but it’s told through a very fluid, stylized way where we’re not sure what’s real and what’s just a character’s perception. It’s a very neat way to tell a story.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Little Bird #4 is maybe the most heartbreaking issue yet in this masterpiece from Darcy Van Poelgeest, Ian Bertram, Matt Hollingsworth, and Aditya Bidikar. There’s a lesson of survival, of children supplanting the parents, instilled here in the penultimate chapter as Little Bird and Gabriel have a bit of an understanding as siblings.

Middlewest #8 attempts to pick up the pieces after Abel’s outburst and near destruction of the travelling circus. Also, more of the sheer monster that his father is. Gorgeous artwork from Jorge Corona and Jean-Francois Beaulieu.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #7 is a number of vignettes with Miles checking in with family and Bombshell before setting up the next arc. Wonderful use of guest artists with Ron Ackins & Dexter Vines, Alitha E. Martinez, and Vanesa Del Rey providing segments as well as regular artist Javier Garrón.

Outpost Zero #10 explains all of the cats. It also gives a timeframe for the colony and a lot more questions as to why the old ship structure and tunnels were just completely abandoned by the colonists. Wonderful designs by Alexandre Tefenkgi.

Tumblr media
Pearl #10 takes an interesting detour for a bit into “real life” as Pearl tries to hold down a “normal” job. Then we get back to the fallout of her chopping off Mr. Miike’s fingers. Absolutely stunning artwork from Michael Gaydos, with some very interesting layouts.
| Published by DC Comics / Jinxworld
Tumblr media
Psi-Lords #1 is another great debut for Valiant. Fred Van Lente, Renato Guedes, and Dave Sharpe update one of the few Valiant properties that haven’t been brought back yet, with a bunch of seemingly newly activated psiots awakening in some kind of “Aztec sex dungeon”. The story keeps you off-balance from the beginning, adding a nice bit of mystery to what’s going on. And the artwork from Guedes is excellent.
| Published by Valiant
Tumblr media
Rat Queens #16 begins the run by the new creative team of Ryan Ferrier, Priscilla Petraites, and Marco Lesko in earnest, following on the special. The Queens are essentially tearing themselves apart at this stage and nothing seems to be able to go right.
| Published by Image / Shadowline

Rumble #13 tackles the next Scourge Knight and Timah learns an interesting fact about the bundle of joy growing inside her. Great art as always from David Rubín and Dave Stewart.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Savage Sword of Conan #6 is a single issue story from Meredith Finch, Luke Ross, Nolan Woodard, and Travis Lanham. It’s a captivating tale of revenge and Conan fighting through some insurmountable odds. Great art from Ross and Woodard.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Usagi Yojimbo #1 begins a new era at IDW...in colour. Tom Luth joins Stan Sakai for the interiors in the first part of “Bunraku”. While it is a bit odd not to be black and white, this is still masterful storytelling, building on some traditional Japanese culture and providing an intriguing supernatural mystery.

Warlord of Mars Attacks #1 begins another property crossover mini-series from Dynamite, this time mixing John Carter with the Mars Attacks aliens, from Jeff Parker, Dean Kotz, Omi Remalante, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Nice bits of humour.
| Published by Dynamite
Tumblr media
Wolverine: Infinity Watch #5 concludes this mini from Gerry Duggan, Andy MacDonald, Jordie Bellaire, and Cory Petit. It’s been a very entertaining follow-up to Infinity Wars, but it’s also served as a kind of weird clean-up to continuity that Marvel otherwise seems to have abandoned.
