I was planning to only make a celebration drawing this year, but I noticed the size is perfect for making red envelopes, sooo... I made some myself! I'll upload the pdf file on my Patreon. Although I know most people who follow me probably don't celebrate the Lunar New Year haha :'D Still tho, HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!

Sewed and embroidered my own red envelope this year. Did a couching stitch with a metallic gold thread. I don't know if I'll keep doing this for the next 11 years. We'll see!

In Chinese New Year, we're Chinese people have tradition of giving Red Envelope with money inside the envelope. The person who give Hong Bao at Chinese New Year event is from married person to unmarried family members.

Wrapping lucky money in red envelopes is expected to bestow more happiness and blessings on the receivers.

What’s written on red envelopes (红包)?

Let’s celebrate the Year of the Rabbit (兔年) by reading some hongbaos! I recently found a bunch of old hongbaos that I have received over the years. I had already taken the money out, but I guess I set the envelopes aside.

Probably the most common character and most important thing to know is: 福 fú - good fortune / happiness / luck This character is so ubiquitous that there is even a subreddit called r/itisalwaysfu. You will see 福 on some of the red envelopes below.

万事胜意 | 萬事勝意 wànshìshèngyì - may everything be better than you wish

一帆风顺 | 一帆風順 yìfānfēngshùn - to go smoothly / to have favorable wind all the way / have a nice trip

大吉大利 dàjídàlì - luck and prosperity / great luck, great profit

心想事成 xīnxiǎngshìchéng - to have one's wishes come true

万事如意 | 萬事如意 wànshìrúyì - may things go according to your wishes

富贵花开 | 富貴花開 fùguì huākāi - riches and honor, flowers bloom

迎春接福 yíngchūn jiēfú - welcome spring and receive good fortune

Paintings for the 2024 Grumpy Bert/Harman Projects Red Envelope show celebrating the Year of the Dragon. Artists painted on the ubiquitous red envelopes that the Chinese fill with money and give out as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. "Yangban Dragon" is inspired by a nobleman portrait I saw at the National Gallery in Seoul. 3.5x6.5" acylic painting on red Chinese new year paper envelope. If you didn't know, Koreans also celebrate lunar new year. The gallery asked a few artists to also paint big 18x36" paintings, so I painted mine in acrylic on wood panel. Dragons are associated with agriculture and rain and the show has a red theme so it seemed natural to paint the Korean heirloom peppers I grow on our roof every year.
