Other Appalachias: A Booklist
As requested, the anti-Hillbilly Elegy booklist, plus annotations! When possible I tried to include books that were by Appalachians and got at lesser-known aspects of Appalachian life and identity, especially modern Appalachian life. When creating the original list I was also limited by books that were in the library network I work at, which is a) a public library and b) not actually located in Appalachia. Yâall get some bonus titles that werenât in my library - hopefully theyâll be in yours.
A note: I have not read every single book on this list! This is the nature of creating booklists as a librarian. I trust the sources I used to find them, but if thereâs something on here that youâre like âoh I read this and it sucks actually,â let me know. And if thereâs a particular aspect youâd like more books on, also let me know!
General
Appalachian Reckoning: A Region Responds to Hillbilly Elegy (Anthony Harkins and Meredith McCarroll, eds)
What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia by Elizabeth Catte
If you read any two books on this list (especially if you arenât from Appalachia!) make it these two. The first one is a collection of essays and photographs, the second by a single author, but both are fantastic for the basics of âhey was your entire idea of a huge stretch of the US defined by Deliverance and some NYT op-eds? perhaps it should not beâÂ
Appalachian Fall: Dispatches from Coal Country on What's Ailing America by Jeff Young
Leans a little more âplight of the white working classâ than I absolutely love, but this talks a lot about contemporary workersâ rights and local activism in Appalachia and is a good counter to Vanceâs narrative of âeverybody sits on their ass all the time.â
Belonging: A Culture of Place by bell hooks
Hey did you know bell hooks was from Kentucky? bell hooks was from Kentucky! As always her writing is deeply insightful about who is allowed to claim a place and what it means to have roots.Â
Rx Appalachia: Stories of Treatment and Survival in Rural Kentucky by Lesly-Marie BuerÂ
The opioid crisis has defined the region (much as alcoholism came to during Prohibition); unlike a lot of writing on the topic, this lets people tell their own stories.Â
Race and Sexuality
Another Appalachia: Coming Up Queer and Indian in a Mountain Place by Neema Avashia
Excellent counter to the narrative of Appalachia as unrelentingly white, and also painfully good writing on what happens when the folks you grew up counting on let you down.Â
Loving Mountains, Loving Men: Memoirs of a Gay Appalachian by Jeff Mann
This 2005 memoir got a re-release in 2023, and thank god because it makes me cry. Really beautiful writing on what it means to come back to a place and carve out a space for yourself.
Y'all Means All: The Emerging Voices Queering Appalachia (Z. Zane McNeill, ed.)Â
Another essay collection! There will be more; I like an essay collection for getting a sense of a subject beyond a single voice. Touches on everything from disability to race to Mothman.Â
Deviant Hollers: Queering Appalachian Ecologies for a Sustainable Future, Zane McNeill and Rebecca Scott, eds.Â
This wide-ranging collection of essays wasnât on the original list because itâs pretty hard to come by (academic queer theory is not a bastion of your average public library collection.) Just based on the table of contents I am going to try and get my hands on a copy ASAP.Â
Gone Home: Race and Roots through Appalachia by Karida L. Brown
Focuses specifically on Harlan County, Kentucky, drawing on a ton of oral history interviews of Black residents to talk about the Great Migration, Blackness in Appalachia, and identity formation in the region and beyond.
Beginning Again: Stories of Movement and Migration in Appalachia, Katrina M. Powell, ed.Â
This just came out in June! In a place so often defined by how many generations of your family have lived there, itâs worth considering who gets removed from that story. Â
Their Determination to Remain: A Cherokee Community's Resistance to the Trail of Tears in North Carolina by Lance Greene
The history of Appalachia is pretty obviously incomplete without talking about the policies of Indian Removal. Greene tackles a tangled story of assimilation and cultural survival.Â
Even As We Breathe by Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle
The only fiction book on this list, but the main goal of the list was to let Appalachia speak for itself. Clapsaddle is a member of the Eastern band of Cherokee; the novel, set in western NC during the 1940s, talks about (in)justice, assimilation, and belonging.Â
History, Labor, and Environment
You canât talk about the history of Appalachia without talking about coal, and you canât talk about coal without talking about labor, and you also canât talk about coal without talking about the environment.Â
Ramp Hollow: The Ordeal of Appalachia by Steven StollÂ
An economic/environmental overview of Appalachia covering the shift from homesteading to resource extraction. To understand whatâs happening economically in 2024 you need to understand what happened economically in 1750-1850, and this gives a general and fairly accessible throughline.Â
The Battle of Blair Mountain: The Story of America's Largest Labor Uprising by Robert Shogan
An older book on the most famous event of the West Virginia Mine Wars, but is a very readable narrative that also touches on Blair Mountainâs wider context. Â
Written in Blood: Courage and Corruption in the Appalachian War of Extraction, Wess Harris, ed.Â
A much more in-depth look at specific aspects of the Mine Wars and labor history, rather than a general overview, but worth reading for its coverage of more recent events (it didnât end with Blair!)
To Live Here, You Have to Fight: How Women Led Appalachian Movements for Social Justice by Jessica Wilkerson
Focusing on the 60s-70s and LBJâs War on Poverty, a good discussion of historical grassroots organizing.
Digging Our Own Graves: Coal Miners & the Struggle Over Black Lung Disease by Barbara Allen Smith
Seminal text! First published in 1987, with an updated edition released in 2020.Â
Soul Full of Coal Dust: A Fight for Breath and Justice in Appalachia by Chris Hamby
After being mad about black lung in the 80s, you can also be mad about black lung today, because it didnât go anywhere.Â
Desperate: An Epic Battle for Clean Water and Justice in Appalachia by Kris Maher
Very âlegal thriller focused on one guy,â but extremely readable. A great book to get your liberal mom fired up. Â
Mountains Piled upon Mountains: Appalachian Nature Writing in the Anthropocene, Jessica Cory, ed.
This list has been almost entirely nonfiction, so here is some lovely prose about what folks love about the region with both literary nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Itâs got a wide geographic focus to boot.Â
Food and Culture
Appalachia on the Table: Representing Mountain Food and People by Erica Adams Locklear
Great deconstruction of how we talk about mountain food and culture (scandal! Sometimes great-grandmas used Bisquick.) Will make you hungry and also question what authenticity means and where your family recipes actually come from.Â
Making Our Future: Visionary Folklore and Everyday Culture in Appalachia by Emily Hilliard
West Virginia state folklorist Emily Hilliard talks about pro wrestling, Fallout 76, songwriting, and coal camps. Appalachia in the 21st century.Â
(Finally, a shoutout to the various bookstores whose lists I used as jumping-off points, especially Appalachian Mountain Books, City Lights Bookstore, Firestorm Books, and the Museum of the Cherokee People.)

So I know Iâm not Cristina, but here are some you might like based on that:
The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez (hard SF that almost reads like short stories, beautiful prose, can get pretty darkâthink Fifth Season)
Tell Me an Ending by Jo Harkin (actually also reads like interconnected short storiesâa memory-wiping company, but really about how we define ourselves and our relationships, tw suicide)
Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson (a SF world that feels like a fantasy world, kind of a coming of age story, tw rape)
The Unspoken Name by AK Larkwood (this oneâs less dark, just a sprawling high fantasy)
and then I feel like these are probably ones you already know about, but:
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie
The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland
i love getting tiktoks from fantasy book girlies and listening patiently to all of their recommendations like they're talking personally to me and then ignoring everything and only reading books cristina has recommended OR hard fantasy/scifi that have goodreads reviews like "took a while to get into" or "too difficult to follow"

Transgress your bodyâs borders, shed your skin, embrace your monstrous flesh. Freed of the shackles of the vulnerable female body, I will be reborn as a woman who devours.

Note
i think i was born with this pain. just like i was born with organs. or if not born with it then - as a woman - be destined to experience it.
i donât know if suffering as such is our biological destiny (mostly because it means that if you donât hurt properly, then you arenât a ârealâ woman) but your message really made me think about it -- how maybe suffering isnât biologically determined but is by society, like being a woman will always hurt while patriarchy is in place --
anyway,Â
âI think that writing about women goes hand in hand with horror writing. The female body is a nexus of pain almost by design (that by-now ubiquitous line from Fleabag: âwomen are born with pain built in, it's our physical destinyâ), but it is also potentially monstrousâan object traditionally subjugated, both for its presumed weakness and its perceived threat.â Julia Armfield
âThe moment we start talking about wounded women, we risk transforming their suffering from an aspect of the female experience into an element of the female constitutionââperhaps its finest, frailest consummation. The ancient Greek Menander once said: âWoman is a pain that never goes away.â He probably just meant women were trouble, but his words hold a more sinister suggestion: the possibility that being a woman requires being in pain, that pain is the unending glue and prerequisite of female consciousness.â Leslie Jamison
âAfter dreaming of Emily Dickinson, I buy a collection in the hope of divining some message from the patron saint of sad girls. Pain has an element of blank; / It cannot recollect / When it began, or if there were / A day when it was not.
Maybe she is telling me that pain was sort of lurking inside my body all along, natural. Mother Nature. Gaia, Dione, Virgin Carrie, when shall I be reborn?â Rebecca Harkins-Cross

While most Brits may know the Profumo Affair as the political scandal that rocked Harold Macmillanâs government in the early 1960s, few have ever been privy to the perspective of 19-year-old Christine Keeler, whose brief sexual relationship with then Secretary of State John Profumo is credited to have been the epicentre of that governmentâs eventual undoing.
The story, which re-entered headlines in 2017 upon Keelerâs death, is ripe for telling in the current climate â one that looks more favourably on her point of view, according to writer Amanda Coe (Apple Tree Yard, Black Narcissus), who carried out exhaustive research into Keelerâs life around the time of the scandal.
âThe [material] that is undiscovered has to do with her perspective, which is what would it feel like to be a teenage girl who comes from a very limited and damaged background and is suddenly the most famous woman in the country?â says Coe.
âIn a sense, the tabloids created the story and that is something thatâs in the mix of the drama â how she was encouraged to perform a certain version of events she got trapped in and that other people became collateral damage to.â
The Trial Of Christine Keeler is the first project to emerge from Keshet Internationalâs $55m drama fund for English-language drama, launched last year. The drama stars newcomer Sophie Cookson as Keeler, while Ben Miles is Profumo and James Norton plays Stephen Ward, who was in the orbit of the affair as part of the inner circle.
Producer Rebecca Ferguson adds that the team was suggested male directors, but she was determined to secure a female director. âI wanted [Andrea Harkin] from the get-go,â she explains.
âItâs not that men canât direct women, but there is a definite distinction between the male and female gaze. Andrea has brought an intimacy and poetry to this.â
The project is to air on BBC One in the new year.

Ian Flemingâs James Bond #001
Ian Fleming's James Bond #001 Dynamite Entertainment 2019 Written by Vita Ayala & Danny Lore Illustrated by Eric Gapstur Coloured by Roshan Kurichiyanil & Rebecca Nalty Lettered by Ariana Harkins   A fresh take on the worldâs greatest secret agent. When a priceless piece of art is found to be fake, investigations lead down a rabbit hole of international crime and corruption. But what the hell does James Bond know about the world of art forgery?   I am always up for a new take and version of James Bond. After all with each new actor portraying him in film we get a new take so it's only natural that it happen here as well. We open up here with a very classic James encounter and it literally starts thing off with a bang. It grabs the readers' attention, piques their curiosity and draws them in to see if we get to know what that scenario actually took place.   The main story starts off with a very modern day rant in a sue happy culture. While I get it, it's now and current, it's just a shame that we have this culture now and it has seeped into the books we read. Entitlement due to money and these Nouveau Riche are the worst of the lot. Regardless it does set things up for an interesting encounter here with this guy and the introduction of a pair of characters who show a lot of promise! The idea behind them is interesting and I have no idea if they actually represent a real company or not but at this stage their partnership is something makes complete sense to me and I look forward to seeing how their role in all this continues to play out.   The way that we see the story & plot development through the sequence of events that unfold as well as how the reader learns information is superbly done. The way we see the events and how they flow through the book is smart and intelligently done so that we see the thinking process and it isn't just one jump to the next in thinking it's deduction and logic and that is exciting to me. The character development is fantastic as we see these new characters and get this great sense of who they are and what they can do. The personalities we see are so very well presented and it's really a joy to meet these folks. The pacing here is good and strong and follows the sequence of events nicely so that the ebb & flow that is created and the twists and turns we see keep the reader fascinated.   I like the interiors here. The linework and how we see it utilised with the varying weights to bring out this attention to detail is really nice to see. Also special shout out to whomever did the paintings in this one because what we see at the Dayton Keene Museum did an absolutely amazing job with them. Now I have to say the faces, facial expressions and body language are magnificently rendered and really show off this attitude and further the characterisation in ways that can only be done visually. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a really solid, strong eye for storytelling. I will say this more often than not, I would like to see more backgrounds being utilised throughout. Too many blank spaces for me since when we do see them they really enhance the moments and bring a great sense of size and scope to the book. The colour work here is delightful. I like the shading and the highlights that we see here. Some absolutely great colour choices as well and there are those moments where the gradation of hues and tones are in play that I think are amazing, when they break into the apartment for example. â   I am down for this, ante up, all in you name it and I am there. This has me all kinds of excited by the new characters and whatever role James will end up playing in all this. I love the unexpected and I love when risks are taken and this is the perfect opportunity to do just that. These folks have gone out and done something new and different with the character and I couldn't be any happier to be reading this title. Intelligently written and delightfully illustrated this is the beginning of a James Bond run you need to be a part of!

The Baby Formula Crisis Worsens
By Emily Harkin, University of Iowa, Class of 2023
August 11, 2022
In February, Abbott Laboratories, known for its medical technology and health care products, issued a voluntary recall of several formula products, specifically Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare. [1] This recall was due to the possible contamination of baby formula with a type of fatal bacteria as well as additional health problems to infants, like necrotizing enterocolitis, from a mishandling of products in their factory within Sturgis, Michigan. This contamination has been the cause of over 30 federal court lawsuits. This recall of formula, in addition to the limit of baby formula production, has created a mass shortage of baby formula across the United States. [1]
The magnitude of cases has led to the creation of several actualized and possible MDLs the country. [1] MDLs, otherwise known as Multidistrict Litigation, are used in federal civil courts that help to reduce the magnitude of similar court cases for the purposes of efficacy. Legal battles in federal courts, rather than state courts are preferable for multi-million-dollar companies due to the defendant friendly leaning of federal courts.
Congressional Codification of MDLs in 28 U.S. Code § 1407 [4]
Up to June 15, there were 89 lawsuits in the federal MDL in Illinois. [2] Recently, there is a more accurate total of 97 lawsuits within the Chicago MDL with the claim of âpremature infants suffering from a disease called necrotizing enterocolitis after consuming cowâs milk-based formula.â [1] Although the number of lawsuits is increasing within the MDL, this type of litigation is support is encouraged by Abbott Laboratories who has stated a desire for the centralization of lawsuits to be sent to U.S. District Judge John Kness in Chicago who has previously reviewed company cases. [1] Within the Chicago MDL, litigation is already in process as a federal judge has ruled that Abbott Laboratories, is unable to use âsnap removalâ as a legal escape clause against its numerous allegations, specifically against their Similac baby formula product. Snap removal is a nicknamed removal of a state case to a federal court prior to a forum defendant. This is a circumvention around the âForumâs Defendant Ruleâs prohibition against removal,â which creates this legal loophole. The courts are very divided about whether this loophole is permittable or not. [3] In a simplified application of the term, the lawsuits against Abbott Laboratories a defendant can take the case of a state court docket before the plaintiff has the ability to have it served by the police department. [2] In the Chicago MDL, Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer in the Northern District of Illinois ruled that it was âabsurdâ reasoning, especially within Cook County âwhere service must be effected by the county sheriff.â Additionally, âshe wrote that the âproperly joined and servedâ language was intended to stop gamesmanship by plaintiffs, who might otherwise name a defendant in a lawsuit with no intention of serving it in order to bring it in a particular state court.â âAbbottâs interpretationâŠwould create a race between the Cook County Sheriff and forum-state defendants, totally divorced from plaintiffâs intent to properly serve and join those defendants,â she wrote.â âA few hours or even a few minutesâ difference in timing of service â a matter wholly outside plaintiffsâ control â cannot be a basis for federal court action,â the judge added.â [2] Additionally, Abbott argued that its products, Similac and others, âincrease the babiesâ chance of survivalâ as well as denying the allegations against them.
