5/ The murder of Peter Lumberg: an arrest

5/ The murder of Peter Lumberg: an arrest
Tumblr media
With Inspector Durham still away, Sub-Inspector Bowen presided over the investigation into Peter Lumberg’s murder. Percy Le Vaux remained the main person of interest. A magisterial inquiry opened into the homicide, but police swooped in to arrest a witness even before the completion of the proceedings.
The story of a Cairns murder, the attempted framing of an innocent First Nations man, the sexual assault on a young constable by one of Queensland’s most senior cops and a suicide. The Queensland Police hushed up this story. It stayed hidden for over a century before this writer found the documentation that shows these crimes were the tip of a torrid, tropical iceberg. The story of taboo sex, blackmail, a serial killer and the police and government corruption that enabled the cover-up.

5/ An arrest
1905 was not a good year to be a friend or relative of Percy Le Vaux.
The year began with the unexpected death of his wife Blanche’s 54-year-old father. Dr O’Brien attributed the death to bronchopneumonia and heart failure.
Louis Severin left no will. His oldest daughter Pauline took on the role as executor of his estate and, after sufficient pestering from Percy, gave Blanche £300 despite the pair’s animosity. This was a good amount of money — one hundred times the Inspector of Nuisances’ weekly wage. Percy banked the money for Blanche, who then fell seriously ill with an undiagnosed complaint.
“In March, my husband drew up a will for me by which I left all real and personal estate to him. I was very ill at the time. My father had put some property in my name.”
Blanche went to Townsville for treatment by Dr Bacot, North Queensland’s most respected doctor. After Townsville, she travelled to Mareeba and spent a fortnight in hospital there under Dr Savage.
Peter Lumberg lived at the time in a shed in the yard of one of his houses, neighbouring the Le Vaux’s.  He was also struck down with a mysterious ailment. He got better for a while, but then fell ill again.
Peter diagnosed his own complaint. Terminal cancer. He paid Nurse Stephens to call regularly and Dr O’Brien also made occasional shed calls.
Neither disputed the old man’s self-diagnosis. Everyone waited for the illness to run its course. Dr O’Brien and Nurse Stephens suggested he move to the hospital. But Peter thought if he went into hospital, he might never come out.
Peter decided to move out of the shed and into somewhere more comfortable, something that did not please Blanche Le Vaux.
“Lumberg then came into a room on the ground floor of my house. The nurse told me Peter was downstairs, and he was pretty bad. I said to her, ‘We can never get rid of old Peter. I won’t have Peter dying in my house’.”
Blanche instructed Nurse Stephens to ask Peter to leave.
Nevertheless, at Percy’s prompting, the old man made a will, leaving everything to Blanche, with Percy as executor.
Then, while Percy Le Vaux was away for a while, Peter began to feel better. In fact, a police detective later noted a pattern. Peter and Blanche both seemed to recover during Percy’s absences from Cairns but then go downhill on his return. However, no one noticed at the time — including the man most qualified to do so — Dr O’Brien.
Peter eventually gave up on O’Brien and headed for Townsville, where he sought a second opinion from Dr Bacot. No cancer, said Bacot, just indigestion. And just like that, the dying man recovered.
With his health recovered, Peter moved back into a downstairs room at the Le Vaux house.
Meanwhile, Percy Le Vaux’s life was a constant whirl of travel, drink and argument. Undeterred by his loss in the 1904 election, he travelled to towns around the north, publicising his likely candidacy in future polls. He drank seven days a week, often with Peter Lumberg, Alfred Chisholm and Marston Mayers. Peter was no longer a notorious drunk, usually sticking to shandies, but he still constantly in Percy’s company.
Percy argued with anyone and everyone, sometimes obviously drunk in court. Then came the murder of his best friend.
On Friday, September 8, 1905, a magisterial inquiry opened into the death of Peter Lumberg.
Acting Sergeant McGuire testified first. He listed the wounds observed on the body and estimated the time of death as about 12 hours before he first saw the body, around midnight the night before.
However, the next witness begged to differ. Dr O’Brien gave the time of death as at least 24 hours before his examination, sometime before 1 pm Monday. In the weeks to come, he would elaborate on his reasoning.
“In my opinion, the body had been dead more than 24 hours. The place was an exposed place. Rigor mortis was well marked. The dry mass of blood alongside the head had reached the stage of decomposition, and it would take at least 24 hours to reach that.
“The abdomen was extended with gas, and the characteristic green colour of the decomposition reached to the navel. On opening the abdomen, the characteristic smell of advanced decomposition was present. I think 24 hours was the minimum time; 48 hours might be the maximum. I doubt if it were more.
“The minimum time in which rigor mortis would become well marked at that time would be from five to ten hours. I am referring to climatic conditions when I say at that time. The probability is that decomposition would set in quicker in a weak man. In my opinion, the deceased must have been dead before 1 on Monday afternoon.”
That conflicted not only with Acting Sergeant McGuire’s estimated time of death but with evidence Dr Webster later gave regarding the death of Charlie Jamaica at Aloomba on the same date. Charlie was 36, almost half Peter Lumberg’s age.  Dr Webster noted that he enjoyed good health — if you ignored the bullet shot into his heart. Charlie’s body was less exposed to the elements than Peter’s, lying not in a swamp but under a shop veranda. Webster noted rigor mortis and estimated the time of death as 12 hours before, which corresponded with witness testimony of the time of the shooting
Rigor mortis can occur as soon as four hours after death and begins to pass within hours. It occurs more quickly in hotter temperatures, in older people and after violent deaths. Doctors knew this in 1905. Well, most did. It seems Dr O’Brien never read Post Mortem Examinations with Especial Reference to Medico-Legal Practice by Professor Rudolph Virchow, the father of modern pathology. A shame. There was at least one copy in Cairns. Louis Severin, whose death certificate O’Brien signed in January, owned a copy.
Richard Alfred O’Brien graduated Melbourne University in 1902 and arrived in Cairns in 1904 as the youthful protégé of Queensland’s first Commissioner for Public Health, the highly regarded Dr Ham. After that first visit, O’Brien resigned his government position and returned to Cairns in 1905 to take up private practice.
At 27, he was young. The Morning Post called him ‘a very young man indeed’, and the paper did not intend that as a compliment. In his time in Cairns, Dr O’Brien, who would go on to become an internationally renowned bacteriologist, proved a self-assured young man who did not take kindly to criticism or disagreement. The good doctor went for the throat of anyone who questioned his judgment, whether a patient, the local Ambulance Brigade or even the Cairns Municipal Council.
He also misled the inquiry on the subject of the blood on Le Vaux’s tomahawk found at the crime scene. When Detective Constable Seymour asked O’Brien if the blood came from a chook, he agreed it did. But he can’t have known. It takes more than a glance to differentiate between human and poultry blood. An examination with a microscope will offer some certainty. O’Brien boasted of owning the first microscope in Cairns he didn’t take it to the swamp that day. Nor did he use it to examine the suspected murder weapons in subsequent weeks, convinced of the accuracy of his original judgments.
By the time Percy Le Vaux took the stand at the magisterial inquiry, he seemed aware of the suspicions surrounding his recent actions.
He came with his alibi ready.
But it seems he planned his defence based on Acting Sergeant McGuire’s estimated time of death. Percy’s alibi was for Monday night.
Although he usually slept in a separate room, Percy claimed that on Monday night, he slept with his wife.
However, McGuire’s estimated time of death had been superseded by O’Brien’s, and it was now accepted the murder occurred before 1 pm Monday.
But Percy Le Vaux was unsure of his movements that day. He remembered visiting various hotels and drinking but not who served him or who he talked to.
The magistrate and Sub-Inspector Bowen pressed him for facts.
During the lunch break, a panicked Percy returned to his office, spoke to his clerk and examined his correspondence in an attempt to piece together his movements the previous Monday.
After lunch, he detailed his movements.
He began the day with a stroll to work at 8.30 am, before quenching his thirst with a whisky at the Strand Hotel at 10 am, and another at the Mining Exchange.
After squeezing in an hour’s work, he revisited the Mining Exchange before popping into the Federal and then the Court House Hotels for yet more refreshing beverages. He headed home for lunch from 1.30 pm till 2.30 pm.
On his return, he slaved diligently over book-work for an exhausting hour and a half, before accompanying a friend for another invigorating brew at the Mining Exchange, and thence home for dinner at 6 pm.
After dinner, he tottered off to the Club House Hotel, before heading with a different friend to the Crown, from whence they decided to visit Lumberg at his camp. Not finding him there, they stopped off at the nearby Royal.  Admirably, after leaving there, they walked straight by the Queen’s, but their willpower deserted them when they reached the Crown. Their thirst still unsated after a couple of drinks there, they moved on to the Club House for their final nightcap.
Percy obviously understood the need to remain hydrated in the topics.
Sub-Inspector Bowen questioned Percy about Peter’s real estate holdings. He wanted to know why Percy had gone months without paying his rent. Percy explained that Lumberg intended leaving the house to Blanche Le Vaux who he’d known since childhood and regarded as a daughter. (That same Blanche Le Vaux who complained constantly about Peter’s dirty habits and asked Nurse Stephens to ask him to find somewhere else to live when she thought he might die of cancer under her roof.)
Sub-Inspector Bowen asked about Percy’s black tweed suit with white stripes. It was the lawyer’s best suit and most commonly worn, until the days after the murder.
Percy explained that on the Thursday before the murder, he came to blows in the street with Lionel Draper, the husband of Blanche’s unloved sister Pauline. He suffered a nosebleed, and Blanche, who usually paid to have her laundry done, washed and pressed the suit herself to remove the blood.
Ler Vaux was walking with Peter Lumberg at the time of the fight. A neighbour testified that later that night, the pair argued, apparently over Le Vaux’s temper.  Le Vaux denied the neighbour’s testimony that he screamed abuse at his elderly landlord, including, “You God Damned old scoundrel, I’ll screw your neck.”
Nevertheless, the next morning, Peter moved many of his possessions from under Le Vaux’s house to the bush camp across the road from Mrs Dunwoodie’s Royal Hotel.
On Monday night, while drinking at the Crown Hotel, Le Vaux and Marston Mayers saw an article in the Charters Towers Telegraph about Le Vaux’s recent visit to the town. The article mentioned Peter and the pair decided to take the paper to the camp of the barely literate miner.
Not finding him in the tent, they left the paper on Peter’s bed in the tent and went over the road for a drink at the Royal.
Percy took advantage of his time in the dock to sing the praises of his dead friend and assure onlookers of their steadfast friendship.
“Deceased was the most intimate friend I had in Cairns, and he was a man who thought a good deal of me. He had a great liking for me and there was hardly a day when he was in Cairns passed that he did not call on me or inquire after me. He always looked upon my place as a home.
“When he was up the country, and heard of my standing for the Cook Electorate, he came down at his own expense and went with me to the Cook in order to influence the old miners in my favour.
“He always consulted me before he did any business. He had also a great regard for Mrs Le Vaux and had known her since she was a baby. When I spoke to him about the arrears of rent deceased said he would not charge rent. The house is Mrs Le Vaux’s, and as he made it his home, he did not see why he should charge any rent. He did not want to charge me at all. I have no knowledge of Lumberg ever having an enemy. He was an inoffensive old man. He was very stubborn when once he took an idea into his head. I never heard him say he was afraid of anyone. He was fond of roving about.”
The inquiry continued for a few days with witnesses testifying that Peter spoke discreetly of wanting to cut his lawyer and ‘most intimate friend’ from his life.
“I am full up of it. Le Vaux is no good. I wish I had nothing to do with him,” he told a night watchman a few weeks before his death. On the Friday before his death: “I am being humbugged by Le Vaux. I wish I had nothing to do with the bloody thing.”
Then, as Le Vaux left the inquiry one afternoon, First-class Constable Seymour stepped in front of him.
“From instructions received from Sub-Inspector Bowen, I arrest you for the wilful murder of Peter Lumberg.”
“Good gracious!” said Le Vaux, trembling and tears welling in his eyes.
“This is the cruellest thing that has ever happened to me. I am as innocent as anyone can be. It is awful. Good gracious!

I was lookin' back to see if she was lookin' back...
Yesterday Alex, Mum and I celebrated...
It's been one year since Alex and I arrived at Mum's place in Ocean Shores, NSW Australia.
If you've read my earlier blogs in 2020, you'll know that we had a lot of trouble getting home. Between the government and airlines, at one point it looked like we'd never get here; we were stranded. I was living in constant worry, stress and hopelessness - in fact, we all were: Alex's family in Germany and Mum's family down under.
Our July 2020 flights were cancelled or rescheduled many times, and eventually we decided to buy new, more expensive flights, on another airline through an agency, which gave us some assurances we'd be on the flight. Our new flights booked and confirmed for early September.
We flew Frankfurt to Adelaide, which was not our original plan. Adelaide had no COVID, and the chance of getting on a flight and getting into the country was higher than say, Brisbane, or Sydney. We could quarantine in Adelaide for 2 weeks and then fly on to Brisbane, which is closer to Ocean Shores.
That was like.... so last year...
This area where we now live is known as the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, and when we arrived at Mum's there was no COVID in the area. We are only about 35 minutes south of the Queensland border, about 8 hours north of the big smoke, Sydney.
Now, a year on, COVID has arrived here.
It's been biting at the heals of tourists and essential workers travelling north since Sydney went into lockdown a couple of months ago.
It's not our idea of a good time.
Right now it's school holidays, which is meant to be 2 weeks of families holidaying in caravan parks and hotels, an essential part of this tourist attraction mecca. Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads, and surrounds are usually very popular places; so popular that most locals complain about how busy it gets here during the holidays. You just can't get a parking sport anywhere!
The Northern Rivers was locked down for about 6 weeks through August into September because cases from Sydney were getting into regional NSW. These regional areas affected by COVID weren't near here, but they made a blanket rule for everywhere outside of Sydney, just to be on the safe side.
Honestly, I don't blame them for the rule, regional outback Australia can't cope with COVID, there's few hospitals, beds, or COVID experience in the scrub and farm land.
Anyhow, I digress...
After those 6 weeks or so in lockdown, they lifted the restrictions here in the northern rivers (and other areas of NSW).
And now, after 2 weeks, lockdown is back on...
There are a couple of cases in the area. Snap lockdowns are the government's preferred method of containing outbreaks. Lockdown areas wherever cases pop up for a week or two (or longer) to limit exposure.
It reminds me constantly that life can change quickly at any time. I have decided I will not waste time once this current lockdown has ended (who knows when that will be). I will visit friends, family, and musicians who live close by. I want to see as many folks as quickly as possible, before another lockdown kicks in.
Besides the boring, never ending tale of COVID, there have been a few things happening this past year...
Alex has been working consistently in the real estate industry since her temporary visa kicked in late last year.
Her first job was a few more miles away than any of us locals would consider driving, and the position wasn't as enjoyable or rewarding as she had first hoped. She really dived in the deep end, and while she didn't drown, she probably needed a few swimming lessons before the attempt. It was a life lesson, one she took on board, and when a new job came up closer to home, she nailed the interview (as she always does), and hasn't looked back.
The 2nd job is less than half the distance away, strictly 9 to 5 and in a company which she enjoys. There's a strong company structure, good work ethic, and entertaining colleagues. Her supervisors, colleagues, and managers are all very supportive; I think she'll be sitting tight on this one for a while.
Alex has also found her creative side again, scrap book journalling, instant camera photography, and some kind of couples diary/journal/photo book too. It's become an almost nightly affair of focusing, creating, and having something to show for it fairly quickly. She's very proud of her work, and it's something she does just for herself. I don't expect you'll get a chance to see a photo of what she's done, and she likes it like that.
I had a bit of work late in 2020 and early 2021, nothing special really, but wait until the premier!! It's interesting to think that some day soon I'll be able to go to the cinema and see my ugly mug on the big screen (even if it will most likely be out of focus). I'll be on Netflix too.
Having the opportunity to be an extra on film and TV was a real boost for my confidence after being off stage for so long. I felt creative, met some great people, made some friends, and had a few bucks in my pocket. Happy days.
By jumping into an industry I hadn't been in before right after arriving here, it reminded me that Australia has a lot to offer. I found myself comparing Germany and Australia, and Australia often feels like it comes up short. This was a chance to prove to myself that there are adventures awaiting here down under.
So, I decided to go back to school.
The last time I was in a class room was in 1998!! I am studying a Diploma of Counselling, and am currently half way through my studies. I've found it very challenging, but have passed every assessment so far, and gained some handy skills too. I have a good connection with my teachers, and I really enjoy the company of my classmates; some of which I can even call friends.
I chose counselling for a few reasons, but the first step was really just a process of elimination. Besides being a freelance professional musician for several years in Germany, I had worked in offices, shops, warehouses, kindergartens and various other jobs. While I could go back into IT or something similar, I wanted to use this opportunity to try something new.
I had my fair share of mental health issues in the past (and present). I thought maybe those experiences could help me connect with folks who need support as well. When looking at course options, the counselling course stood out. So now I'm making a mid life crisis gamble that I'll pass the course, and feel confident and knowledgeable enough to take on the role that many others have taken on for me over the years.
The course has helped me find a routine too, one that I didn't know I needed, until it happened. When you're jobless and unfocused, the mind wanders, the days pass. Now my mind is focused on study, and I feel better for it.
Up until the lockdown hit, we were in class 3 days a week and then I'd study from home 1 to 3 days a week. When lockdown hit, we had to go online. However, being on the computer so much has worn me out, and I really start to enjoy those rare days where I am not looking at a screen!
To be honest, it's been challenging every step of the way, and I even thought about quitting several times in the past few months. However, my confidence has steadily risen to each challenge and I felt better for it.
That's the kind of vicious circle I enjoy.
In July I had my first live show in 13 months! In fact, to date I've only had 3 since the pandemic started! Fingers crossed I can cross the border next month and add a 4th.
I was approached by Cherry Divine to play guitar for her. It's a relatively easy gig for me. The songs are fun rockabilly tunes, Cherry sings great, and she already has a band and gigs. I'm helping her write a few songs too, for her next album. I can't thank her enough for sparkin' the fire in me to keep music alive in my life; for a while there I thought it was all a thing of the past.
With the spark has come the possibility of “The Josh” solo band coming together. While the band isn't moving at any great speed (the recent 2nd lockdown kicked in right as I was about to arrange a rehearsal), I'm finally eager to get a band together. I miss playing live, and I miss having musicians in my life. I miss the spontaneity of a show, life on the road, and crowd reactions.
I've even started to write some new material, and get those ideas on “tape”, well, on the computer. Slow and steady, between studying, family, pets and surfing, music is coming back into my life, and it feels good.
Our family unit here is doing well. Alex and I have been under mum's roof and mum's care for a year now. There are some ups and downs, but mostly I'd say they're ups... The house is big enough to give all of us space, all of us get time outside of the house (except during lockdown, I was mostly stuck at home, but that's OK for me)...
Last night we couldn't go out for dinner, but we did have take away from the local Indian which was really good, and a special treat for us, we don't eat out often.
Alex and I plan to get away every 5-6 months for a visit to somewhere we haven't been. In March we were on the “Sunshine Coast” and checked out Australia Zoo, and in June we went south to the mid north coast to pick up BB Junior.
It's nice to get out and explore. A bit hard to do at the moment, with the restrictions, but we've agreed another trip away (before Christmas if possible) is in order. Those trips are part of the reason why I came home, to see some of Australia, and I'm lucky I get to make those experiences with Alex.
It's also nice to get away from it all. I know we live in a beautiful spot near the ocean, but here, at home, there's the computers, the life and routine, and getting away keeps us fresh and focused on each other. It's definitely something I look forward to!
Speaking of BB Junior, he's almost 7 months old now, and a real character. While he's not the easiest cat to train, I've been getting a few tricks out of him, and he enjoys his time outside, with his harness and long lead. He visits his cousin each week for play time, Charlie, who is another ragdoll of a family friend who loves to play chase all day long with Junior. Alex adores Junior, and Junior adores Alex; they can't wait to cuddle when she comes home from work. He's very vocal too, so even when everyone is at work, I have someone to talk to!
Losing our little boy Mijo was a real difficult experience. I know I've written about him before, but he deserves a mention here, as he was a big part of our first year here. He was full of character and strength, he and I bonded very quickly and not a day goes by I don't think of him. He also brought Alex and I closer together. When she chose him for me, and when he passed, and all points in between, he brought us closer.
I've been focused on sport a fair bit since getting back and settling in. I bought a RowErg, also known as a rowing machine, and I row about twice a week, in addition to riding my bicycle about twice a week. I try to surf every chance I get, which unfortunately ends up being only a few times a month. It's my goal to do something sporty to get my heart rate up every day, and of late, usually I get there too. I don't really do it for any other reason than I love to snack and I can't snack if I don't do sport!
A benefit of my sport/snack workout routine is it helps me stay calm and focused and connected with those I ride and surf with.
I haven't asked Mum how she's feeling about having her middle aged son and his wife living with her recently. Maybe I should, but do I really wanna know the answer? Well, I think she's OK with it. After all, we drive her wherever she wishes! I suspect it goes a little deeper than that, and in all honesty, we enjoy each other's company.
Since Alex and I have been here, I'd like to think Mum has been living a little bit fuller life. I don't think her eyesight has deteriorated much in the past year, but we've been able to provide her with support, eyes to read the small print, driving and help with google, or something around the house. When Mum was diagnosed with celiac disease earlier this year, Alex took her shopping to check over the ingredients of Mum's favourite food, and when needed, found alternatives. It definitely made the transition to gluten free a little easier on Mum and it was a load off my mind that we were around to help her through that phase.
Winter 2021 was over before it even started. I forgot how warm this part of the world is, and I don't know why I own so many jackets! Returning from Europe, where I was wearing a jacket daily for about 9 months of the year, here it feels like, if it's really needed, and I mean if you're desperate, you might need one for 9 weeks of the year. I think the heater was on a handful of times, and the sun was shining just about every day.
I tell ya, it's some kind of paradise here.
It's been a bit difficult keeping up with our European friends and family. I sometimes find it hard to find the time to be proactive to contact the 20, 30 or more friends I'd like to keep in touch with regularly. I know our lives keep on keepin' on, but time passes by so quickly too, and next thing you know it's been 4 months since I last contacted you!
Sorry about that!
Don't take it personally, and I'll get back to you, eventually!
My overall mental health has improved over the year, I'd say it's become quite stable since I started the course. I mean, can't you tell? I write less and less in this blog, because I have less and less to process. I'm not sure if it's the fact there's a lot of self reflection that is inherently a part of doing that kind of mental health course, or if it's the routine of being a student or the new friends I've made and classmates I study with.
It could be that it's taken a year to come to terms with being back here, cause when I first arrived I felt uncomfortable, depressed and worn out... There were a lot of questions; is this a mid life crisis? What am I doing here? Will I ever feel good again? Is my music career over? What am I going to do now? Is Alex OK? Is Mum OK?
My journalling, blogging, and support from friends and family has helped a lot too this past year. Processing my thoughts in words, by clarifying and reflecting, has helped a lot. I've been trying to care for myself a bit more now and then too, I think people call it self care, sometimes I call it sport! Alex has helped me to recognise my achievements, however big or small, and focus less on what I haven't done.
I'm not perfect, but definitely improving.
I was hoping that Alex and I would be in a position to start looking at buying our own house around this time, a year in, but unfortunately, with one of us being a student and the ever rising cost of housing, we have to sit tight on that idea for a while longer. Sorry Mum, you're stuck with us.
There's been many smaller things happen during our first year here. Lots of moments of gratitude, love and support. There's some stuff we've forgotten, or that has been overtaken by something bigger. All in all, I'd say it's been a real rollercoaster home coming!
We're still here, a year on, still going strong, making motions, taking chances, being in love, talking shit, laughing, smiling, misbehaving and focusing... What more could we ask for?
Thank you for reading, for your support and love. I love you too.

As compared to North Queensland areas such as Brisbane and Townsville, real estate in Cairns is emerging as the property powerhouse. The whole of Australia has seen a large property boom in recent months. The Cairns region is of course no different, with record price increases being recorded for March 2021. Further, with the reopening of interstate travel and the hotter months past us, this area has a real competitive real estate edge when compared to other parts of the state. Paired with recent infrastructure developments, Cairns will become a hot spot for purchasing and selling property.

Twin Waters real estate
Twin Waters is a coastal suburb of Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland , Australia. Twin Waters had a population of just over 2,700 people. Twin Waters is the southernmost suburb of the North Shore and is a boutique residential community on a picturesque canal system. Surrounded by the waters of the Pacific Ocean, the Maroochydore River and the salt water canals, Twin Waters is a quiet paradise close to the middle of Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast airport. Residents of Twin Waters will enjoy a peaceful environment, including parks and walkways, the Maroochy River Conservation Area, fishing or boating on nearby rivers, golfing at the Twin Waters Golf Club or relaxing on the nearby beach. Twin Waters is bounded to the south by the Marooch River and to the south by the Coral Sea. The bulk of the river frontage is conserved within the Maroochy River Conservation Park, which covers more than 150 hectares and is managed primarily for the conservation of nature. Due to the L-shape of the suburbs, there are three distinct areas: northwest, southwest and southeast. The south-eastern part of the suburb is mainly occupied by the conservation park and the Twin Waters Resort - with its own lagoon. The northwest is occupied by the Twin Waters Golf Course, which has some residential development. The south-west has its own lagoon connected to the Maroochy River and is a mixture of residential development and a conservation park along the waterfront. Daydream as you float in warm water for countless hours, visit a day's spa or book a blissful massage to top off a wonderful day. You can play your golf game at the globally known Twin Waters Golf Club in the vicinity. And if you want a little more action, the excitement of the whole Sunshine Coast region is within easy reach, or you can place your towel on nearby Mudjimba Beach, Marcoola and Coolum Beach. ii.  biography  .
madeleine  kim  was  born  to  tae - min  and  min - ji  kim  during  the  summer  of  1996  in  sydney  ,  aus  .  tae - min  had  already  been  growing  a  fortune  as  he  was  one  of  the  top  real  estate  agents  within  the  city  of  ascot  .  min - ji  was  a  woman  who  wanted  everything  handed  to  her  ,  and  thus  ,  when  madeleine  was  two  her  parents  had  gotten  a  divorce  .  her  mother  went  off  to  marry  another  man  ,  and  she  hasn’t  seen  her  since  she  walked  out  with  her  louis  vuitton  suitcases  .
for  the  next  five  years  ,  tae - min  put  romance  on  the  back  burner  as  he  continued  to  build  his  real  estate  empire  .  eventually  ,  he  left  the  agency  he  was  working  with  to  open  his  own  ,  and  the  agency  was  an  instant  success  due  to  previous  clients  continuously  sending  their  referrals  to  him  .  the  agency  slowly  began  to  incorporate  custom  builds  into  their  system  ,  adding  on  to  the  empire  .
for  little  madeleine  ,   she  was  the  apple  of  her  father’s  eye  .  he  was  continuously  spoiling  her  and  getting  her  whatever  she  wanted  .  if  she  wanted  a  princess  themed  birthday  ,  then  she  was  getting  a  custom  made  dress  and  a  little  tiara  to  match  .  there  was  never  a  day  where  she  didn’t  get  everything  that  she  asked  for  ,  and  she  especially  would  always  clasp  her  hands  together  every  night  and  ask  to  not  have  a  new  mommy  .
sadly  ,  this  was  the  one  time  where  madeleine  didn’t  get  what  she  asked  for  as  she  was  soon  introduced  to  her  step - mother  ,  bo - ra  jeong  ,  when  she  was  thirteen  years  old  .  bo - ra  was  a  nasty  woman  ,  a  woman  who  didn’t  want  children  ,  and  believed  that  children  should  neither  be  seen  or  heard  .  although  madeleine  didn’t  know  her  biological  mother  ,  she  definitely  took  after  her  in  terms  of  personality  as  she  continuously  bumped  heads  with  her  step - mother  .  there  was  never  a  moment  where  the  two  weren’t  at  each  other’s  throats  ,  and  madeleine  was  especially  upset  with  her  father  for  never  taking  her  side  .
thus  ,  madeleine  became  an  angry  girl  who  took  all  of  her  frustrations  out  elsewhere  .  during  her  high  school  years  is  when  madeleine  made  her  youtube  channel  .  originally  ,  it  could  have  been  seen  as  a  place  where  she  ranted  out  her  frustrations  about  her  step - mother  ,  but  she  primarily  liked  the  aspect  of  doing  something  creative  .  for  the  first  year  ,  she  transitioned  out  of  ranting  lol  and  into  doing  things  she  actually  enjoyed  .  she  often  talked  about  clothing  ,  hair  ,  and  makeup  ,  but  the  subscriber  count  was  very  slow  .
during  that  time  ,  madeleine  was  faking  being  ‘  relatable  ’  as  it  was  the  most  popular  way  to  grow  a  channel  ,  so  she  often  hid  the  designer  labels  in  her  bedroom  and  filmed  in  one  of  the  smaller  rooms  in  their  home  .  thanks  to  this  ,  her  subscriber  count  began  to  slow  ,  and  she  slowly  changed  back  to  her  actual  personality  where  she  began  to  show  off  the  things  she  or  her  father  purchased  for  her  .
it  was  in  2014  when  madeleine  graduated  from  high  school  ,  and  her  step - mother  pushed  for  her  to  move  out  .  madeleine  was  annoyed  by  this  ,  but  with  her  channel  growing  ,  she  knew  that  she  was  able  to  do  so  .  not  only  that  ,  but  she  now  had  access  to  the  money  that  her  father  had  been  saving  for  years  ,  so  madeleine  left  and  decided  to  make  toronto  her  new  home  .
as  an  eighteen  year  old  moving  to  a  new  country  ,  madeleine  decided  that  she  would  document  the  journey  through  a  series  on  her  channel  ,  which  aided  in  the  boost  in  her  follower  count  .  she  showed  the  process  of  finding  an  apartment  ,  purchasing  furniture  and  moving  in  ,  which  led  to  a  lot  of  chaotic  vlogs  and  people  really  enjoyed  seeing  her  personality  shine  through  .
madeleine  has  now  been  living  in  toronto  for  the  last  six  years  ,  and  has  been  gaining  subscribers  slowly  but  surely  .  although  she  does  weekly  vlogs  ,  she  still  does  sit  down  videos  for  makeup  ,  fashion  ,  and  hair  .
iii.  social  media  statistics  .
YOUTUBE  :  23.5m  subscribers  .
INSTAGRAM  :  21m  followers  .
TWITTER  :  9.8m  followers  .
TIKTOK  :  3.2m  followers  .
iv.  temperament  .
she’s  a  bitch  and  that’s  that  on  that  OUYHUYOIU  .  she’s  very  blunt  and  doesn’t  find  a  reason  to  hold  her  tongue  because  how  the  hell  else  is  she  supposed  to  get  what  she  wants  .  of  course  ,  she’s  really  easy  to  get  along  with  but  it’s  also  equally  as  easy  to  get  on  her  bad  side  ,  so  she  can  turn  into  an  asshole  real  quick  .
madeleine  has  a  HUGE  superiority  complex  ,  and  it’s  so  ugly  !  she  doesn’t  outright  brag  because  she’s  really  not  that  bad  ,  but  it’s  not  unheard  of  her  to  make  little  subtle  remarks  in  reference  to  the  amount  of  money  her  family  has  .  to  put  it  simply  ,  madeleine  is  the  mean  friend  .
she’s  a  person  who  likes  to  challenge  almost  everything  ,  so  she  has  a  habit  of  coming  off  as  someone  who  creates  chaos  just  for  the  sake  of  it  .  she’s  definitely  not  a  stone  cold  bitch  by  any  means  ,  but  depending  on  certain  situations  she  can  sometimes  lack  sympathy  /  compassion  and  will  straight  up  tell  someone  to  ‘  get  over  it  ’  .   she  might  not  be  the  one  to  start  arguments  ,  but  she  will  finish  them  .
v.  headcanons  .
she  is  never  without  her  vlogging  camera  !  she  always  has  extra  batteries  in  her  purse  just  in  case  ,  so  she’s  ready  to  whip  out  her  camera  whenever  the  moment  calls  for  one  .
madeleine  is  a  pot  stirrer  and  she  wears  that  badge  with  pride  .  do  NOT  tell  her  a  secret  because  she  is  not  one  to  be  trusted  with  such  information  .  she  will  spill  the  beans  ,  tote  the  news  to  her  friends  (  especially  if  she  doesn’t  like  you  )  ,  and  be  hella  shady  .  she  will  literally  spill  your  tea  and  own  the  fact  that  she  did  .
her  hair  is  canon  to  rosé’s  as  she  was  a  strawberry  blonde  for  a  very  long  time  before  dying  it  with  a  silver  tone  with  blue  highlights  .  has  a  habit  of  always  touching  her  hair  and  forever  has  a  scrunchie  in  her  bag  because  she  can’t  live  without  them  .
the  spare  bedroom  of  her  apartment  is  reserved  for  filming  ,  so  she  set  up  ‘  stations  ’  where  one  side  is  made  for  doing  makeup  videos  ,  another  is  used  for  fashion  /  standing  videos  ,  and  the  back  wall  is  where  she  films  sit  down  videos  .  she  mostly  loves  making  vlogs  ,  though  ,  and  she  does  weekly  videos  .
madeleine  is  calm  chaos  ,  which  is  the  best  way  to  explain  her  .  she  doesn’t  hold  her  tongue  (  per  her  headline  )  ,  and  she  doesn’t  really  hold  her  tongue  either  .  very  much  has  twitter  fingers  but  she  backs  it  up  .
vi.  wanted  connections  .
my  favorite  part  aka  plots  !  i  find  rich  kids  rps  having  room  for  plenty  of  stuff  ,  so  if  none  of  this  works  or  if  there’s  something  else  you  want  to  do  ,  please  let  me  know  !  all  of  these  plots  are  open  to  female  ,  male  ,  and  non - binary  pals  ,  so  if  something  interests  you  as  well  please  yell  at  me  about  it  because  i  love  yelling  about  plots  NJFBHDBSJHDS  .
give  me  an  ex - girlfriend  or  give  me  death  !  i’m  thinking  about  something  that  was  cute  and  soft  ,  someone  who  appeared  in  her  vlogs  a  lot  and  someone  who  her  subscribers  absolutely  adored  !  i’m  thinking  that  they  broke  up  on  relatively  mutual  /  good  terms  ,  so  they’ve  become  good  friends  since  their  break  up  !
due  to  her  personality  ,  i  wouldn’t  be  surprised  if  madeleine  found  herself  in  a  toxic  relationship  .  lots  of  back  and  forth  ,  lots  of  arguments  that  ended  in  them  quite  literally  kissing  and  making  up  ,  but  give  me  something  i’ll  dream  about  KNFDBSIFDS  .
i  don’t  really  have  a  label  for  this  one  ,  but  something  that  was  highly  disapproved  by  their  friends  /  inner  circle  ?  this  would  require  a  little  more  plotting  just  to  get  dynamics  down  ,  but  i’m  just  picturing  something  where  when  they  made  it  official  their  friends  were  like  ‘  why  would  you  date  them  ?  ’  so  there  was  probably  a  lot  of  moments  where  they  felt  like  it  was  them  against  the  world  but  i  think  it  could  be  an  interesting  dynamic  to  write  !
the  way  that  madeleine  has  enemies  is  sickening  !  i’m  looking  for  something  where  they  genuinely  hate  one  another  and  there’s  no  chance  of  them  EVER  becoming  friends  .  i  have  no  clue  as  to  why  they  wouldn’t  be  friends  ,  but  i  want  is  please  .
some  collaborators  !  people  who  show  up  on  her  igtv  reels  every  so  often  or  even  in  her  youtube  videos  (  in  videos  like  ‘  what  my  friend  wears  to  fashion  week  ’  or  even  general  vlogs  )  ,  and  they  go  on  little  adventures  with  one  another  !  i  just  think  it  could  be  something  cute  and  fun  !

Clandestine Drug Lab Remediation
Tumblr media
MCS services include pre sampMould Samplingling, site remediation and post sampling to ensure your property can be safely re-occupied. MCS has the expertise, assessment skills, remediation ability and experience to totally resolve any issues you have in regards to Meth Lab clean-ups.
A clandestine drug laboratory (or ‘clan lab’) is any site associated with the process of attempting to manufacture illicit drugs. Most commonly, clan labs are located in residential rental properties.
Why are drug labs dangerous?
Drug labs produce a range of illicit drugs including:
Amphetamines and methylamphetamines — commonly referred to “speed” or “ice” and are highly addictive3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) — street name “ecstasy”Heroin and “home-bake” heroinLysergide (LSD)Gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) — street name “fantasy”Paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA)Other chemically-based dangerous substances
Drug labs in Australia can also include cocaine extractions, synthetic cannabis manufacture and indoor hydroponic cannabis. The drug “cooks” have little regard for themselves or the welfare and safety of the community.
These synthetic drugs are produced using highly toxic chemicals mixed together with other substances. Because of the mix of precursor chemicals and substances used in drug production, the resulting dangers are the generation of highly toxic fumes, poisonous gases, chemical vapours together with corrosive and flammable ingredient / by products which presents a real risk of explosion, flash burns and fire. The waste produced from drug labs may also cause harm to the occupants and the environment.
Exposure to the toxic by-products of these substances can cause immediate harm and can be life threatening. Prolonged exposure to chemicals used in drug labs may contribute to serious long term health issues (including brain, liver, kidney damage and cancer).
Even after the removal of a clandestine laboratory, residual chemical hazards from the toxic fumes and poisonous gases during production and the location where drugs are taken/consumed within the lab environment come into contact with the building structure and content items. The presence of clan lab residues inside a dwelling continues to pose a health and environmental threat to occupants (present plus future) and consequentially the property is considered a contaminated site and deemed unfit for human habitation.
Clan labs are usually set up in rental properties, meaning that future tenants are at greatest risk. Inhabiting the site of a former clandestine laboratory contaminated with a variety of chemical residues can result in serious health problems, particularly for children, elderly, individuals that have immune compromised health problems who are likely to be in contact with surfaces and furnishings containing these residues. This can leave the property owner or property manager at risk of legal action from tenants experiencing adverse health effects.

Brief Introduction to Registration Certificate
Tumblr media
Whether you remain in the process of getting a house for the first time or you are skilled in the art of buying and also selling home, you will certainly no doubt have heard your lawyer discuss the demand to acquire 'Property Certifications' at an onset in the conveyancing process.
Like much of the lawful jargon pertaining to the process of acquiring as well as offering residential or commercial property, it is most likely that many individuals have no suggestion what these certifications are as well as why they are necessary-- some people might think it is just a more cost that is included onto their expense and that these certificates offer no genuine purpose at the same time.
The truth of the matter is that acquiring and also reviewing property certificate is an essential element in any conveyancing process. Right here we have laid out for you the purpose of these certifications and why they are so essential.
So what exactly are residential or commercial property certificate?
In any kind of conveyancing transaction, the seller's lawyers have to offer residential or commercial property certifications to the purchaser's lawyer. These certificates offer as much as day information concerning the property.
There are two primary registration certificates:
-          Residential property Certificate.
-          Sale Agent Certificate.

Mostly they're nice guys
"Mostly they're nice guys, not crazy men," she says. "There are a lot of members looking for love. They want the connection. Some members want you to call their name. Or to talk to them while you dance and strip. I'm very honest with them - they know I have a boyfriend, and they know we are not going to have sex in real life."I teach them about fetishes - what a fetish is, why a person has one… We study Freud and a lot of psychology. And we study a book of gestures because women must be sensual, smart and beautiful.Lana is a graduate who worked in real estate until the global economic crash of 2008 plunged Romania into recession. That is when she first took up video-chat. Her first day in front of the camera has stayed with her.And as a cam girl, you won't know where it's coming from. You'll get your split — typically around 35-percent, but sometimes upwards of 70 — siphoned to you via an innocuous credit card processing site like CCBill, while the site takes the rest of the cut. However you earn that cut is up to you. Some sites, like Streamate, allow actual sex to the point of orgy, while others limit your act to a solo show. You can do whatever you think will earn cash in the form of dollars-per-minute private shows or instant "tips". That's the formula. You're up against tens of thousands of women (and men, to a lesser degree) offering the same product in varying versions. That's a tough stab at making a living, even with your clothes on.
The curvy 21-year-old from Queensland says 'you can't just sit there, look pretty and take your clothes off,' – that customers want someone who is real, who they can form a relationship with. Are there any really common requests that you get?If you think cam girls — those flirty naked characters that plague porn site pop-up ads — are raking in easy money, you're right. If you think cam girls are bleakly stripping online out of desperation, you're also right. Peel away the sex and pixels and money and you're left with the cloudy truth about the internet's relationship status with these on-demand entertainers: it's complicated.A little research at mega-message boards like Stripper Web is fruitful — you'll pick up "Best Way to Recieve Money from Guys" muse in "Are you always beautious on cam?" And, of course, share war stories. One user started a thread spilling the most obnoxious, bigoted lines she'd recently been fed by "customers":
"There's a lot of burnout in this industry," Domino tells me over the phone from one of the three houses she owns in Wisconsin — one of them a lakefront property outside of Madison. She says it with a serious voice that sounds a little tired.I made $20AUD in ‘tokens’ (how payments were recorded via the site) my first night. 20 bucks for six hours of sitting around in my underwear, netflirting with dudes. It wasn’t much, but it was more than I’d make scrolling through Tinder looking for someone I actually wanted to bone IRL. I knew the way to make real money was either by going private (opening a private show chatroom that costs the user a certain amount per minute) or by spending many months on the site building up a following, just like any other chaser of internet work/fame!To investigate, I visited the biggest camming studio in the US, Studio 20 in Hollywood. A lot of times, when you sign onto a popular cam site, or when youre on a porn site and a camming ad pops up, it looks like the girls are camming from their bedrooms. Actually, though, a lot of the time, theyre camming from studios like Studio 20 that are basically these buildings filled with rooms decorated like bedrooms.Lana is a graduate who worked in real estate until the global economic crash of 2008 plunged Romania into recession. The first time I went private with
The first time I went private with a guy I freaked the fuck out. All he wrote was get naked. And so far all Id done in a chat room was flash my boobs for an influx of tokens. I froze up in stage fright and closed the room. In my group chat I wrote: Sorry, cam froze. And I logged off for the night.Eventually I got a bit more adventurous. I hula-hooped in my underwear while listening to the Arctic Monkeys. I also did yoga, livepainting with my back to the webcam in only a thong. I racked up a couple hundred bucks over a few days and cashed the cheque sent the next month. By this time I’d masturbated on camera for a few guys, but I was starting to get a little bit paranoid about my face appearing in an advert on another website somewhere and someone I knew seeing it. I have nothing against sex work, having worked in the industry three times now, but I don’t like the idea of say my boyfriend's brother or housemate or one of my own family members opening a webpage to a moving image of my face mid-orgasm purely because well, I don’t think my family would support that decision.Camming has become a huge part of the sex industry over the past decade, and it’s continuing to grow. There’s a lot of cam girls who now monetize and advertise through social media, so they're kind of the new "it girls" in a way—they’re rock stars, they’re influencers. Some of them have millions of followers on Instagram. It was after a shift at the club in Kings Cross I was dancing at that I sat on my bedroom floor and googled feminism and stripping. I was naked underneath my pink robe, hair extensions falling out, one eyelash stubbornly stuck on. I had been speaking with a friend that night on the phone during my break who had said something that I couldnt get out of my head. She told me that my job was degrading and asked me how I could call myself a feminist when I turn guys on for money.
Others aren't so lucky, she says, referring to her peers' dips into coerced sex and assault. "Guys who are in charge of these business, they don't respect the girls, because of this job. A girl who does this doesn't deserve to have respect — that's just the mentality. But at the same time, Anna downplays the prevalence of studio abuse as "exceptions", or even complete fabrications — ploys for sympathy and the money that might trickle with it.Yes, its very much like the girlfriend experience. But that also depends on what the webcam model is like and also what the person paying is like because everyone wants something different. Some sessions earn her $10 – others $2000 depending on how much the men on the other side of the screen are willing to give her in tips. Unlike many who work in the sex industry, Sandy Bell does not worry about her own security.

It is true that when I am up on stage I feel powerful. In my 7-inch heels and latex leotards and frilly skirts, my body feels beautiful in a way that I dont see it in everyday life, and I feel confident and empowered. When the music comes on, I go with it, when I dance it is natural and its fun. The money is ultimately what I am here for, but this isnt just something I do just to pay the rent. This is my art, and whilst I am making myself sexually desirable, nobody can objectify me, as I hold that power. I am in control, because I objectify myself, if you like.A little research at mega-message boards like Stripper Web is fruitful — you'll pick up "Best Way to Recieve Money from Guys" muse in "Are you always beautious on cam?" Update #21 – 1 week at “The Ocean Shores Resort”
Update #21 – 1 week at “The Ocean Shores Resort”
A week ago we left quarantine in Adelaide!!!
It's been another week of mixed emotions, but I have to say, for the first time in months, they've been mostly on the positive side of things.
Last Tuesday, we left the hotel without too much hassle. They'd given us a basic breakfast the night before to have first thing and they called us down early; luckily we were ready and down the stairs we went. Before you know it, we were in the hotel reception taking our masks off!
Adelaide and South Australia are COVID free, so no masks, no problems.
The checkout was quick (the big bill comes in a few weeks!!), the staff were awesome and the police informative. They all understand that quarantine is not easy on anyone, and they were patient with our questions and worries. We had won the jackpot of quarantine hotels: Pullman Adelaide and the staff helped make our stay tolerable.
Jumped in a taxi (with masks on cause we really weren't sure yet how to behave in the outside world) and off to the airport. We had to leave the hotel by 07:30, because another bus of incoming “Covicts” were coming in that morning. Our flight was at 11:50 up to Brisbane, so it was yet another waiting game to check in and fly. But first... coffee! (we actually bought a coffee from a coffee shop! Amazing!! It's the small things...).
The flight was about about 2/3's full, no masks.
Landing in Brisbane we had to do a border check, show our papers, explain where we had been and all that. The check was there to stop anyone who may have COVID from coming in without quarantining. Each State has slightly different rules, and they do change from time to time, depending on hotspots and COVID numbers. Because the flight was from Adelaide and we left the hotel directly to the airport, we made sure we had no problems entering Brisbane (Queensland). We definitely didn't want any chance of another 14 day hotel stay!!!
Our original plan was to fly into the Gold Coast airport, which is only about 35 minutes from Mum, but there were no flights on our leaving day, so we had to fly into Brisbane (which is 2 hours from Mum's). My cousin picked us up (bloody legend!). We were hungry, and we went directly to Yatala pies. This was the moment I started to realize we were almost home. The taste of home! (Yatala Pies is a well known bakery south of Brisbane, a regular stop for many).
My cousin could drive us as far as the QLD/NSW border. Once there, we walked across the border and Dave picked us up on the other side. A little complicated, but sure enough, the plan worked.
The whole experience felt like something out of the movies. Not that it was all “Hollywood”. It was more like: I can't believe this is finally happening. I wasn't really in the moment. Yet.
As we were getting close to “The Ocean Shores Resort” (which is the name we have for my Mum's house) I still didn't feel calm...
Anyhow, we arrived, and if you've seen our IG or FB Story on the day, you'd know that when I knocked on the front door, we had actually surprised Mum (a little early), and she couldn't find the front door key to let us in!! So our reunion started off with a scream and eventually a laugh!!
Mum did cry, but we all expected her to cry more... ;) Honestly, I think we both had cried too much the past 2 months, it was no longer needed. It was all about joy and happiness.
After meeting and hugging Alex (some more tears) we entered the house to find Mum had a “welcome home” sign and our picture up on the walls (lots of me and Alex, can't go wrong with that!!).
It was surreal.
A quick house tour for Alex and we settled down. Lots of chatting and catching up to do, and a roast dinner!
We'd made it.
The next morning (Wednesday), a son's work is never done and I was up early to take Mum to school. She's part of the support unit inside the primary school, working with kids with Autism.
Even though her eyesight is deteriorating, Mum can still work. Driving a car; that's out of the question. Reading the “use by date” on a packet of chips is almost impossible. Keeping an eye on children in the playground, developing their social skills or helping them with their school work (considering the text is usually quite large and the pictures bold) Mum can still do really well.
I've learnt she has figured out ways to cope with her eyes. She has a great memory, so once she's told something, she can remember it really well (like recipes for cooking etc). She's still a keen bargain hunter when it comes to shopping. I enjoy learning that she's kept her life as close to “normal” as possible, making small changes to the bigger things to keep her independence.
But it's those small things that are hard to do alone, which is why I'm here...
After dropping Mum off, Alex and I spent the morning of our first full day in Brunswick Heads. This is the town I lived in from the mid 80's until late 90's. I went to primary school here, learned to surf here, and know the old names of the shops (the hair dressers is now a surf shop, the butcher's is a cafe, the ice cream shop is a real estate agent and the bank has recently closed). Lots of changes for me, lots of new things for Alex.
We also went down to the beach, the south wall of the Brunswick River, where the river meets the ocean. We watched some waves. Taking in the salt air (I don't think I ever realized how salty the air is here until now).
It was a relaxing day.
But I still wasn't quite “here” in my head and heart. Leaving Dresden back in July, only to be delayed for 7 weeks, then another 2 weeks in quarantine, was going to take sometime to overcome.
Time to pick up Mum from school... Home... Unpack a little, dinner, chatting and a little TV.
Thursday morning, it was time for another radio interview. To finish off the 3 part story with ABC North Coast Radio I did another live interview with Joanne Shoebridge. I'm always nervous doing these kinds of things, even though in the music world, I've had to do interviews, they were never quite as personal as this.
After we dropped Mum off at school Thursday morning, we drove up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse and luckily got a park up close to the top.
I wanted to introduce Alex to the area as much as I could, without overwhelming her. Brunswick Heads, Ocean Shores, Mullumbimby and Byron Bay all played a big part of my childhood, and I wanted her to at least know these villages a little bit as early as possible. We'd covered Brunswick Heads and Ocean Shores a little, so now it was time for Byron Bay.
Bring on the whale watching!!
Within minutes of leaving the car, we could see whales jumping out and swimming around the cape. It was a wonderful morning. I'm so glad Alex got to see them (in fact I can't remember the last time I saw whales so close to the shore). They migrate each year around September/October, so it was perfect timing.
It was a special day for Alex...
The sun was shining, the whales were in plain sight and the tourists were kind enough to stay away from Byron Bay. COVID does have its benefits. Fewer people in these tourist spots isn't always bad (although I am quite aware the economy is suffering. The borders are opening up next week and it'll be very busy then).
Back into Ocean Shores, picked up Mum from school. Home... Dinner.. Chatting... Some TV...
Friday was the first day we had to do “stuff” in regards to living here permanently, and that was banking. So after dropping mum off at work, we drove into Mullumbimby “The Biggest Little Town In Australia”. I went to high school here.
Basically Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby are like Neustadt in Dresden. You can't walk down the street without seeing someone you know, stopping and chatting. It happened in Brunz the other day, I literally parked my car, and lo and behold an old high school friend came out of the video store to say hi... Or in Mullum, as we arrive at the bank I see an old friend who used to teach me rock n roll dancing (yeah, I can still cut a rug)... and even inside the bank, I said hi to a fella from my high school year, we hadn't seen each other since 1997.
It's a small world...
The banking took a bit longer than expected, after much back and forward we settled on our new bank accounts and how to arrange things going forward. While I've had an account here since I was very very young, I cancelled most of my stuff when I left in 2002, so now it was time to set up shop again, especially since I had my wife with me and we have a future to work towards...
We walked the street of Mullum, grabbed a coffee and we let the country hippy vibe soak in. Alex commented on how many folks don't wear shoes here and she can't believe how many new coffee shops there are for her to try (there's a lot more than when I was a kid).
Picked up Mum from school... School holidays for 2 weeks! Yippeee!!
Home... Dinner... Chatting... some TV...
Over the weekend we sorted out things around the house. Set up better internet Wifi around the house, the pool is in good condition after the winter sleep, cupboards got cleaned out and we unpacked and the car was washed (first time I've hand washed a car in over a decade!).
Sunday I watched Mark's live stream (from his front porch in upstate New York) and I felt inspired (he does that to me). So I am considering live streaming next week. I have a guitar and good internet, so why not? I just have to find time to practice ;) I'm thinking net Sunday evening here, which would be Sunday lunch time in Germany. If I don't get to it this Sunday, then maybe next Sunday... I'll keep you posted.
Overall the weather has been warm, often over 20 degrees. But the mornings are still quite chilly, with frosty dew on the golf course out back. It's not bad for coming out of winter...
Today, Monday, we went “up the coast”, to Tweed Heads.
First thing we tried to exchange my German license for a mandatory NSW (State) license, unfortunately I gotta wait for some back checks, no idea what I did 19 years ago in Melbourne, but they wanna check it out. So onwards to shopping...
Yes!!! We bought a coffee machine! Finally we can wake and with a press of a button get ourselves a cup of joe. It's the small things....
Helped mum with the grocery shopping. She knows her stuff. She knows where everything is in every shop, but sometimes she just needs me to reassure her what is actually written on the box or package!!!
So that's basically our first week...
We are settling in well. Alex and Mum get on like a house on fire. I often can't get a word in edgewise and I'm always outvoted!
I still miss Germany and I still miss Europe... (I always will). I miss a lot of the “past life”, but that's just cause Australia has moved on without me these past 18 years. Each day here I get a little closer to that homey feeling I used to have as a teenager (when I didn't know better).
In hindsight, the past 3 months wasn't too bad... We survived... But that's easy to say now...
When we were in the middle of it, it was really tough.
It was really hard packing up our lives into boxes. It was emotionally draining saying goodbye after goodbye to our wonderful friends. Playing my goodbye show was one of the musical highlights of my life, even if it was one of the saddest.
Then we were ready to leave...
As you all know, that didn't go according to plan.
That's when the really bad feelings crept in. You know it's one thing to know you gotta pack up and say goodbye to leave (you are prepared for that)... It's another when you're ready and the world says “nope, not yet”... and again and again that build up and let down was happening, and until the last 2 weeks in Germany, we had no idea why!
As some of you know, I'm not really good at spontaneity. I'm not good when the plan changes... It was tough... But...
When we took control of the situation and booked new flights, it helped a lot. We were back in control.
Quarantine was a difficult time, it got a little dark there. It brought with it, it's own set of challenges and a steep learning curve. I, for one, learnt a lot about pressure. I put too much pressure on myself. Since we arrived here, I have tried my best to relax more, in my own way at least. My to do lists are shorter...
Alex and I had already figured out how to survive the German lockdown, the packing up of our lives and clearing out the apartment. Then we had 2 months at her parents stuck in “limbo” and then 2 weeks stuck in a room together. Our marriage is really new, and we survived that without any damage to our relationship. Sure, we both have a few personal scars, but nothing a little love and tenderness wont fix. I'm proud of her, Alex has a lot of patience for me!
I'm really happy I am here to help Mum each day. Those small things will slowly become bigger things, but for now, it's great to be able to do “stuff” with her. That was always the plan, to be here in time, before things got really bad.
We've been posting often on our IG and FB stories, so I hope folks have seen the day to day happenings. I'm sure we'll continue with that, keeping you up to date visually.
I think I'll end these FB journals here, and switch over to Tumblr full time. The idea being that if you'd like to continue to read these long “new life” chronicles, I'll still post a link here when I do update there... Confused? Me too! ;)
Thanks everyone for your messages of support and love. We are very lucky, we have the best friends.... You guys rock! You're awesome! We love you.
Love
