Chapter 1 – Frankie

I honestly hate my job. I let out a sigh as I sign out of my computer after my fourth 10 hour shift this week. I thought being an estate agent for Hamilton’s meant I could just show people around luxury homes in the countryside, tell them how amazing this opportunity is and then go home. In 1905, Cincinnati Vainly Hoped To Double Its Population In Just Five Years

Talk about optimism! In 1905, the Cincinnati Post ran a contest looking for ideas on how Cincinnati could increase its population to 600,000 in time for the 1910 census, only five years hence.

Although Cincinnati was still a growing city – no census marked a decrease in our city’s population until 1960 – any notion that the population might top half a million, much less 600,000 was beyond ambitious. It was flat-out crazy. Still, the progressive Cincinnati Post [16 November 1905] persisted, announcing monetary prizes for the best ideas on how to achieve a population explosion in a few short years.

“If someone should start a 600,000 club in Cincinnati, it would become the biggest organization in the world. This is evident in the fact that every one in Cincinnati, and nearly every one in Southern Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia, would join it. Not only are the people of Cincinnati interested for the greater city, but those outside the city also.”

In the event that folks needed a little incentive beyond civic pride, the Post offered monetary rewards for the best ideas on how to increase the city’s population to 600,000 by 1910. First prize was $50, second prize was $25 and five third prizes of $5 rounded out the awards. From November 1905 into mid-January 1906, the Post published ideas as they arrived and interviewed city dignitaries about the ingenuity of the contest.

Among the celebrities interviewed about the initiative was Joseph B. Foraker, former governor of Ohio and current U.S. Senator from Ohio. He told the Post [15 November 1905]:

“Keep building skyscrapers. One can scarcely realize the great change that has come to the city. Why, from my window they are jumping up until the city is looking like an oil field. They are filled, too, just as rapidly as they are built. Make room for the people, and they will come along.”

Compared to some of the other ideas submitted to the Post, Senator Foraker’s suggestion was rather tame.

J. Louis Bunn, a house painter, suggested rerouting the Ohio River from Coney Island to Sedamsville southward into Kentucky, so that Covington, Newport, Bellevue and Dayton would be transplanted to Ohio and therefore become part of Cincinnati.

Frank Boies, a shoe-cutter, was convinced that closing all saloons on Sunday would do the trick.

Harry Dilg, an express delivery driver, lobbied for more championship prize fights being hosted by Cincinnati.

A contestant who signed his entry “Stranger” made a list of obstacles to Cincinnati’s growth. Would Cincinnati ever achieve 600,000 population? According to “Stranger”:

“Not as long as the Traction Company is not compelled to give the people better service. Not as long as the sweeping of any old rubbish, especially paper, off the sidewalk and into the street is allowed. Not as long as property-owners or their agents are indifferent to the appearance of property that has become vacant. Not as long as corporations are not compelled to think of others as well as themselves. The worst case of this kind will be found in the so-called ‘waiting room’ at the foot of Art Hill, sometimes called the Lock-st. Incline. W. Kesley Schoepf [president of the Traction Company] would not think of using it as a garage for his automobile, yet he expects patrons to ‘wait’ in there until one of his 5-cent carriages that you are compelled to stand up in half the time comes along.”

No newspaper contest, of course, would be complete without an entry from an adorable schoolgirl. The Post [28 December 1905] prominently blazoned the ideas of 13-year-old Gladys Schultz of Linwood, who wrote her contribution in verse:

“Annex all the villages in Hamilton County; Give all small manufactories a bounty. Exempt from taxation all chattels; Help the businessman fight some of his battles. Tax real estate all it will stand – The banker can lend a helping hand. Fill the Mill Creek Valley above high-water mark. Build factories thereon with space for a park. An underground railway, with a boulevard top, Our unsightly canal will make a beautiful spot. A union depot for all railroads to come in, Will bring 600,000 by 1910!”

The Post encouraged contestants to submit multiple entries and John Miller, a harness maker, complied by compiling 36 ideas into a single entry. Mr. Miller [11 December 1905] covered quite a bit of territory with his suggestions, ranging from the mundane . . .

“22. For Cincinnati to send a letter of thanks to President Roosevelt and Secretary Taft for the good they did in the last election.”

. . . to the idealistic.:

“36. Abolish capital punishment.”

Along the way, Mr. Miller lobbied for more monuments, an eight-hour work day, honest elections, free schoolbooks in the public schools, more parks along the riverfront and better service at the city hospital.

The winner of the big $50 prize was Marion L. Pernice Jr., assistant advertising manager of the Fay & Egan Company, manufacturers of woodworking machinery. His suggestion boiled down to essentially one word: Advertise! Pernice suggested that all goods manufactured in Cincinnati be labeled “From Cincinnati” and that only goods manufactured in Cincinnati be eligible for that slogan. All suburban manufacturers would lobby for annexation to Cincinnati to carry that prestigious mark.

Alas, the contest did not achieve its stated goal. Cincinnati’s population in 1905, approximately 340,000, reached only 364,000 in 1910. Evan worse, the census of 1910 marked the first time since 1830 that Cincinnati was not ranked among the largest 10 cities in the United States. It would be 1950 before Cincinnati achieved 500,000 residents and 60 years of population decline followed until an uptick in the 2020 census.

And yet, no serious discussion about re-channeling the Ohio River.

Jessie and Sammy share a good relationship. They both talk over the walkie-talkie at night. Jessie read him stories. Lacy wakes up in the middle of the night and checks everyone whether they are asleep or not. Suddenly, she notices her fridge door is open, and everything inside messes around outside. He gets rejected again because of being laid off from Jacobson. Daniel gets positively denied, but he willingly lies to Lacy. He says they are getting back to him next week. At night, Lacy closes the door tightly and notices her sons are talking with each other with walkie. She sends them to sleep and falls asleep. At night, she wakes up having a bad dream and checks every room. Suddenly, she gets a shock seeing a sculpture made of her kitchen products. At night, who made this she doesn't understand. A hand touches her and her jumpscares. Nothing to be worried about; it was Sammy. Lacy asks Sammy who did this. Sammy tells the sandman has done it after leaving his room. Lacy stares at him, making a shocked face. Later in the morning, the police came to check. He says there is no forced entry. Police suspect two cases. One is maybe whoever is doing it has the key to the house, or it's someone in the house. Dad is saying no. No one from the house is doing it. Police say we got a case that their child is a sleep eater. She sleepwalks and eats all the food in the kitchen. Children do crazy things, so maybe your child is a little brilliant. A family comes to watch Lacy's house because she wants to sell it. The mom inhales her daughter as she has asthma. Lacy says her older son got it, too. Mom asks how she coped with it. Lacy says she worried a lot. They both laugh and discuss the house. Lacy asks about the interview at night, and Dani says he doesn't think he will make it. Lacy gets depressed because he lied to her. Dani says he didn't want to give her bad news, but Lacy doesn't buy that. She screams, and Sammy hears it. He contacts her brother, and Jessie tells him to sleep. Sammy thinks her father is going to leave. Suddenly, the alarm rang that night, and everyone woke up and went outside to check. Like every day, they find nothing but some strange things happen. The notice says the intruder tries to enter from every house gate. But that isn't possible, so it's a system malfunction. But Lacy sees every photo vanish from the photo frame. They don't understand what is happening. The following day, the police again blame their kids. Dani and Lacy sit with their kids to talk about this. Jessie says he was asleep, so he didn't take the photos. Sammy says that he didn't take it, but the sandman did it, and the sandman tells him not to tell anyone. Lace gets so scared he calls the police, and they start cleaning the house. Dani asks the police why this has happened. Police predict it could be some outbreak, or maybe it could be an environmental cause like a storm or lightning. Dani and Lacy sit with Sammy and ask gently why he is afraid in the park. Sammy says he can't remember anything, and at one point, he is not himself anymore. Dani decides they are going to the therapist tomorrow, and he will figure out how to manage the money. At night, Lacy wakes up at midnight and sees everything normal. She hears the sounds of someone talking while passing Sam's room. She goes into the room and sees a slick, shadowy figure and screams. She lights on and finds none. Dani runs into the room and asks what's happening. They find Sam nowhere in the house. Suddenly, Dani sees Sam getting outside. He rushes to him and hugs him. They rescue Sam and lie to him in bed. Dani asks Lacy if she saw someone then where he had gone, and he enters. Because everything was locked, and when Sam was outside, they had been closed too. Dan checks his ear and finds a lot of sores. Jessie is busy doing his secret thing. There is a girl who is their family friend. He tells her not to tell her mom and dad about this place. The girl asks what he can do for her. Jessie repeated the scene that he watched on TV. The girl reacts vigorously but understands Jessie is still a virgin and has never kissed a girl. So she calms herself down and kisses him. Jessie gets so freaking happy but gets a little scared while walking the road. Dani and Lacy place CCTV cameras in every room. At night, everyone is asleep, but Dan keeps him awakened for some hours but later falls asleep too. In the morning, Dan finds an exciting thing: every room's footage gets blurred periodically. After that, we see Lacy deal with her clients. Suddenly, her mouth gets stuck, and she can't talk and starts hitting her head suddenly on the front wall. When she wakes up, she gets relief because it was a nightmare. She takes a shower but surprisingly notices a wound in her head. At that moment, she gets a call saying her boss that the client complained to her about exactly what she saw in the nightmare. Pete, her boss, fires her up. She is going to request, but the line gets closed. The phone rings again, and this time, the environment agency. They say the birds are avian flu-negative. Usually, birds come from one direction, but these birds come from three different directions. Someone sent those towards your house. Lacy searches it on Google and finds if any country is conspiring against any government. It can't be the reason. And there is another reason why aliens visit the Earth. Lacy finds some photos on the internet, precisely like Sammy's drawing. Dan gets a job, and he gets flowers and beers for Lacy to enjoy the night. At night, Lacy doesn't find Dan; she comes downstairs and sees him standing outside. She gets in front of him and sees his mouth is wide open, and his nose is bleeding. Suddenly, he returns to the house and discovers himself in the kitchen, but he doesn't know how he got there. Lacy tells him what happened with her earlier and how these are happening. It's alien. A five-year-old whom Lacy finds on the internet vanished. They had been coming for weeks before it took place. Sam drew this same kind of thing. But Dan denies everything. He says just because we can't explain anything doesn't mean aliens are responsible. Sammy goes to the swimming pool with other kids. Shelly takes off her shirt, but she stops because everywhere in his body, there are a lot of marks of beating. Jessie was walking with Ratner. Rat asks him if he kisses her. He replies positively. Ratner motivates him to go downtown. Jessie doesn't like his suggestion. Suddenly, Ratner shoots him with a toy pistol. Jessie runs into the middle of the jungle and gets a seizure attack. The doctor says they have found geometrical shapes in his body. Dan gets furious at Ratner. He thinks he is responsible for his son's sickness. The doctors didn't know what it was, and they told us all we could do was wait until morning to see if he would be OK. That was the longest night of my life. I didn't know if I would kiss a child or bury one in the morning. However, it all turned out, no matter what I faced, I knew I would get through it because I had you.' They go to Doctor Pollard, who is an alien specialist. He asks them if they experienced any unexplained wounds or allergies, if they have blackouts, therefore whatever they have been experiencing the past days. He knows about everything. Dogs can sense aliens, so Lacy buys and keeps the dog with them. Dan buys a gun. They board every window. They stick together. At night, aliens come, and they all fight. Alien plays something on TV, and Lacy goes there. Aliens lock her and attack Sam and Jessie. Their father saves them and comes to Lacy, but in the end, they take Jessie but can't take Sam. They shift the house, and Lacy is organizing all the things. When arranging Jessie's things, she finds that aliens targeted Jessie, not Sam, because Jessie has an allergy, not Sam. Suddenly, the walkie-talkie responds, and they all look at it surprisingly.

Worldbuilding | What is the world like?

I'll skip the explanation for the current state of the world the story is set in and bring the focus in the first part of this post on to Sri Lanka's Negombo Lagoon.

Somewhere in in the early 2000's, a group of sly real estate agents and scheming businessmen with untold amounts of wealth sitting in their offshore bank accounts decided it would be a swell idea to create a special economic zone right in the middle of the Negombo Lagoon.

Was this a good idea?

No. For a lagoon such as this, rich in mangroves and migratory birds, it faces an unending list of problems. Losing the mangroves, which are a crucial part of the ecosystem means that the wide variety of plant and animal species are put in danger.

Was this idea profitable?

Yes. This proposal for an artificial island to support its own sovereign city meant it would essentially be a tax haven, and it indeed was.

Despite massive public uproar, a one-sided acquisition battle with the province council led to Negombo Lagoon's destiny to be set in stone. Very specific loopholes were exploited by the legal team of the local real estate giant, Lanka Properties, to make sure their elite teammates face minimal problem acquiring land here.

The sovereignty of the Lagoon City, was not given to them but stolen proudly. The common people of Sri Lanka couldn't do a thing as nothing the Lagoon administration did broke any of the laws.

Negombo Lagoon is located in the South West of Sri Lanka - it is a biologically diverse estuary-like lagoon (where the freshwater and saltwater eventually meet). Negombo lagoon is fed by multiple rivers including the Hamilton canal/Dutch Canal (popular during the Dutch colonial era). The array of aquatic and avian wildlife makes this lagoon a massive hub for one of Sri Lanka's main industries, which is the fishing industry.

Like many other coastal ecosystems, this lagoon faces environmental challenges, including pollution and habitat degradation. The newest addition to the list of problems was the approved proposal for an artificial island-city. Fun!

What state is the city in by the time the story is shown to the viewer?

So right now, the city is nearing its completion, and the wealthy are flocking to the Lagoon to begin life there. Upon the start of the story, there is a nationwide news coverage for the city's grand opening and inaugeration. The lagoon city being a self-governed state will prove to be a pain to deal with, bureaucratically speaking, with it being smack in the middle of Sri Lanka and the waterbody being a crucial element in the rural communities situated around the lagoon.

What's the culture like?

There's no real culture in this city. This is a heavily materialistic society where people must conform or suffer the consequences.

Revealed in an incident in the film, one of the main cast flipping off the helmet of the security guard at the border, and him snapping out, is my deliberate attempt to show to the viewers that there's dystopian elements like mind control, literal hive-mentality (collective conscious), and dehumanisation in play.

The population

The population is basically the same as modern day Sri Lanka. The year is 2030 and the population has dwindled, mostly because of the brain drain the island faces with the amount of graduates leaving the country. So that leaves only a small portion of the youth compared to the infant and elderly population.

So the population of the city, will mainly be comprised of middle-aged folk who are in the upper band of the society. Ethinicities and nationalities heavily vary, since immigrant elite also decided to buy luxury property in the Lagoon city.

As for kids ranged from 10-17, there's next to none in the city in my narrative.

NEW YORK — Ingrid Lewis-Martin told investigators she was innocent and the Department of Correction would “take care” of her after her arrest last month, according to court filings from last month.

“Corrections will take care of me,” Lewis-Martin, former chief adviser to the mayor, told investigators during her arrest processing, according to prosecutors. “I’ve been good to them.

“I’m not afraid. I know what I did and didn’t do,” she added, according to a filing, which didn’t make clear the context in which she spoke. “This is wrong. I have God and faith. I’ll tell the judge myself — I’m not guilty.”

Lewis-Martin was indicted in Manhattan Criminal Court in December on charges she orchestrated a $100,000 bribery scheme in which she sped up construction permits for two real estate businessmen in exchange for $100,000 in cash and checks to be spent on a Porsche and promises to invest in her son’s business ventures.

Lewis-Martin’s son, Glenn Martin II, overheard her talking to investigators and told her to “cállate la boca,” or shut your mouth, according to a separate filing.

Prosecutors intend to use the statements as trial evidence, Assistant District Attorney Guy Tardanico wrote in a letter to Arthur Aidala, Lewis-Martin’s attorney, on Dec. 30.

Neither Aidala nor Michael Cibella, an attorney for Martin II, immediately responded to a request for comment.

Lewis-Martin also apologized to her son, as well as to Raizada Vaid and Mayank Dwivedi, the real estate moguls, as she turned herself in.

“I’m sorry you’re both there because of me, because of who I am,” Lewis-Martin said, according to the filings, which were first reported by Politico.

The indictment came after months of investigation into the former top official in Mayor Eric Adams' office. In September, investigators with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office seized her phones and searched her Brooklyn home right after she returned to JFK Airport from a trip to Japan.

Also at the airport, federal agents also served her with a grand jury subpoena that required her testimony and documents in the probe that led to Adams’ indictment.

After being presented with the search warrant by the DA’s investigators, Lewis-Martin said: “So you’re the ones that have been listening to my phone. This is crazy. Who am I bribing? What is money laundering? Check my bank records.”

Lewis-Martin also stated that she would still be “going to the mayor’s arraignment,” according to the filings, though adding, “I don’t know how I’m going to get there.”

The mayor’s arraignment on corruption charges occurred the same day her phones were seized.

She also apologized to her travel companions who, like her, had their phones seized, including Cushman & Wakefield executive Diana Boutross and Jesse Hamilton, the city’s top real estate official.

“They’re only looking into you because of me and the mayor,” Lewis-Martin said, according to a filing.

As investigators carried out a search warrant at the home of Raizada “Pinky” Vaid, the businessman said to his wife that this was about “the woman and the mayor.”

Vaid also told an investigator his father used to tell him that “whenever you shake hands with a politician, it will cost you money,” according to a filing.
