Black Blades
Thank you @notesfromnayeshi for showing interest in my notes, hope you'll have fun reading them!
Between the time I finished book two and started book three I managed to convince myself that yes, John is Jat'ibaye so I was really excited for them to meet and I was watching for their interaction like a hawk.
But first, the Glass Palace's gardens just screamed at me that I was right. I mean, the fresh air, and the lush flora in there? As an ecologist myself I think I have a pretty good idea about John's interest and it's right up his alley to try to bring new life to this dying world.
As expected he recognised Kyle but imagine my surprise when Jath'ibaye accused and straight up attacked him? I feel like most of the things he said flew over my head, because I'm missing the part about how he came to hate Kyle this much but I'm sure it will be cleared up later.
OH FUCK if Jath'ibaye is the Rifter that means JOHN IS THE RIFTER?? But I thought the Rifter was a destroyer of some kind and John doesn't seem like the type. I guess something seriously has to go wrong for him to change that much. I'm afraid and at the same time can't wait to find out what that is.
I was so heartbroken for Kyle in the later chapters, I expected him to regain some of his memories seeing John/Jath'ibaye. I know I was thinking a lot about the envelope he received in Nayeshi, and the command. Who sent it, how, what was the real meaning of it? Don't kill him, don't let him live, don't bring him here it's just a mess.
Let me just say that I admire Kyle for his ability to have a full on breakdown and not much later be able to drag himself out of it? I mean, I could use some of that for sure.
Chapter 26 finally confirmed everything I already suspected and you can't imagine how pleased it made me. This whole chapter is pure gold, the way they dance around each other, wanting to connect but somehow afraid and so so cautious with each other. I'd have loved to read more of these, they were so sweet.
Dayyid is such a shit, but what else is new. Not gonna lie, Ravishan is slowly growing on me with his innocent love for Jahn. I swear he can be so dense sometimes, not realising sooner what was Ravishan after. He also gives himself too much credit, becausedespite of all his big words and rational thinking and reasons we all know that it will not stop with only one kiss.

Hey, feel free to ignore this, but I sent that ask abt the rifter and I just finished book 6 and I thought you may be interested in like... Rifter discourse? If not you don't have to read this!!
The thing that amazes me about the rifter right now is the way that characters take shape throughout the story. I really like how we get Kyle's pov after we see John's view of Ravishan, because it gives a lot of context to his character - the way I saw Kyle in the beginning and the way I see him now are very different. It's the same way with John.
It's really as though we get to know them as people, not as characters, and the longer we spend with them, the fuller our idea of them becomes. I dig how we get to know them through each other and how it even recontextualizes previous parts of their own povs? At least it was like that for me.
And! I do like the romance now!! A lot!! Kyle's pov really ties it together for me. Not least because I like him as a character, but also because it puts him on equal ground with John? We only knew Ravishan through John, and he was such.. a figure?? in John's life - a person he really likes, and we see him as such, mainly?? Idk if this makes sense.
But then we finally get them on the same page!! I like their dynamic and the development of their relationship much more than that of John and Ravishan, because now we have a fuller measure of both of them, and their histories with each other are!! They make me feel things
Also just a side note the pace is really good? Every time I think to myself that there's going to be stalling before the fairly obvious plot point, there just isn't. It feels refreshing and keeps me invested all the way through!
Tldr the rifter really makes it worth your time!
yes yes yes yes 100% agree with everything you said!!! i dont even have anything to add. the recontextualization that goes on with their shifting povs and time shifts is soooo engaging to read, i've already said a dozen times over how the non-linear structure of the story is probably my favorite element. it's genuinely one of those series where i can't believe how interesting and high quality it is, and that we get to read it!! they both have so much depth to their characters and i absolutely love how we get to see them from different angles across so many years. it really lets us love them and know them both in equal measure like you said and i love that. i adore them. one of the stories of all time, to me.

I’ve been trying to learn how to paint digitally in a semi-realistic style. This is my second full-sclae piece and I fell like I’ve learned alot during the process of painting this.  The character Ravishan / Kyle / Kahlil from the Rifter series by Ginn Hale.

Ravishan looked up at him, as if he were startled, then slowly his expression melted into a radiant smile. John realized that part of what made Ravishan’s smiles so charming was the sense of surprised delight that they conveyed. He never seemed to expect happiness and that made giving it to him so much more of a pleasure.

The Shattered Gates
So I've read the first book, and here are my thoughts so far.
Thank you @kaerwrites for recommending this series, I'm already in love with the world, the characters and very interested to see how the story unfolds.
@deionora if you've also read it, I'd be very interested in your thoughts!
I'm gonna start with saying that my absolute favorite is Kyle, I love him with all my heart? At the beginning, all I could think about was how I didn't want his comfortable life to come to an end in our world. To not have to fulfill his task, destiny, fate, whatever it is. I just want him to eat good food and to finally see a picture of oatmeal, that's too much to ask for?
But at the same time, he is so badass and terrifying in the other world! The duality of him is very interesting, and it made him a favorite of mine. I mentioned before, but the way he speaks in riddles with the witch- I don't know what's up with them yet, but it was oddly charming in a way? I don't know how to say it but it, was very childlike? Like someone playing games with their sibling? It reminded me of another book that's very dear to me. One of the protagonists' has a talking skull in a jar, and they banter a lot, similar to them.
At the diner scene, when we got introduced to Laurie and Bill, not gonna lie, I was disappointed that the boys didn't get a one-on-one breakfast but ended up loving Laurie in the end, got goosebumps when she tried reading Kyle. I hope he'll not have to kill her in the end.
Also, what's up with John and nature? There is something very fishy going on the whole situation is sus so I'm keeping an eye on that. Originally I pictured John as someone more indoorsy, but I guess he knows a thing or two about surviving in the wilderness, considering he not only keeps himself but two others alive who are not doing so hot.
So, Ravishan huh? He is very sweet, I'll give you that, and seems innocent enough? I was laughing so much when he said that he doesn't want to be a milkman, and the way he greets Bill, “What’s up, my man?” He is very charming.
I'm still very confused about the main plot, that's why I'm not commenting much on that front, and will definitely need a reread because I'm pretty sure some parts flew way over my head. Like where Kyle ended up? I just hope we'll see his return, and it's not the author's way of saying well he failed at his task and writing him off like this.

“Then Jahn wasn´t such a bad choice?” “I suppose it wasn´t.” Ravishan reached past John to pull a spray of pine needles from the branch above them.
“So you saved the candidate´s life?” Ravishan pulled one of the needles loose from the rest, and after a moment, let it drop to the ground.
“I don´t know.” John shrugged. “He was pretty well guarded. He might have been fine without my help.” “The Issusha`im Oracles foresaw his death.” Ravishan shifted to face John, his hip and elbow resting lightly against the smooth alabaster. He leaned close, keeping his voice low “But you stopped it.” ________________________________________________________________ I don´t think I will ever stop screaming about just how good The rifter series by Ginn Hale is. I´m currently reading the books again for the third time and while I´m not too happy with how this turned out (because I have this very clear image of John and Ravishan in my mind) I just couldnt resist. Seriously, go read the rifter! ♥
