Our new Modernism Beyond Metro-Land guidebook features many architects, working in a variety of styles and materials. Walter Segal’s work is unique among them for its focus on self building and use of timber. The borough of Lewisham was the first place to embrace his ideas, which have subsequently spread around the suburbs and beyond.
After a number of years designing small projects such as houses, flats and offices, largely in brick, Segal began to explore timber construction with a temporary annexe whilst his house in Highgate was being rebuilt, devising a self build system using widely available and low cost materials, in standard units. He saw how anybody could use the system to construct their own homes, and via the anarchist writer and architect Colin Ward, found a sympathetic reception at Lewisham Borough Council. They eventually allowed him some land to start building in Forest Hill, constructing 7 homes in what would be named Segal Close.
Other houses were built in Ormanton Road and Longton Avenue, Sydenham and Elstree Hill, Ravensbourne, all using the Segal method and producing houses built with timber frames and infill panels. Another plot of land was given over for self building in Honor Oak Park, where 13 two-storey timber houses were completed in 1986, and the street named Walter’s Way.
The borough’s own architects department also took inspiration from Segal's ideas, with the scheme at Brockley Park, next to Segal Close, designed by Geoffrey Wigfall, using mono pitched homes built in brick and finished with timber cladding and grass roofs. Some of the houses feature “pods” at the front, to be used for extra living or storage space, and the estate is grouped around a large green space.
Segal passed away in 1985 but his ideas persisted with self build projects appearing all around the capital's suburbs, with collaborator Jon Broome continuing the philosophy with his own practice Architype. Self-built projects can be found at Headway Gardens in Walthamstow, Parish Gardens in Greenwich, Eridge Green Close in Bromley and opposite Segal Close in Brockley Park, as well as at many other sites around the suburbs. Walter Segal’s self-build houses will have an extended section in our Modernism Beyond Metroland guidebook, now at 94% of its crowdfunding total. New Year’s Murder: Ben Henham
Bill Henham, 24, from Henfield in West Sussex, was beaten to death and then thrown off the balcony of a disused building in North Street, Brighton, in January 2020. Bill had been kicked, stamped on and hit with a wooden bannister before falling 11ft into a courtyard. A post-mortem examination revealed he suffered more than 60 injuries, including a brain haemorrhage, eleven rib fractures, extensive cuts and bruising to the scalp, face, and neck.
Bill had spent Christmas with his family in Henfield, West Sussex, but decided he wanted to see in the New Year in "lively" nearby Brighton. CCTV showed him leaving a seafront nightclub before a final sighting at 4.30am on New Year's Day in a shop near the squat. The student of digital film-making at Ravensbourne University in London was killed within hours of arriving at the party. He suffered "a sustained and significant" assault that left him with 60 injuries including multiple broken ribs and a brain injury. After a tip-off from a party-goer, police made arrests. Hawley was said to be "in charge of the squat". He laughed and joked about the attack and allegedly confessed to stripping Bill's body and dousing him in bleach. Hawley was seen with a bottle of the chemical and a cloth close to the small 13ft by 6ft room where Bill had just suffered a brutal assault. Others also boasted about their role after moving to a second squat party nearby. Meikle deleted two photos of Bill's body, one partially clothed and one naked, on his phone.
Dushane Meikle, 28, Gregory Hawley, 29, Lamech Gordon-Carew, 20, and Alize Spence, 18, were convicted on February 24. All four men had denied murdering Bill. At Hove Crown Court on Friday, May 20, all four were sentenced to life imprisonment. Hawley and Meikle are to serve a minimum of 25 years and Gordon-Carew and Spence are to serve a minimum of 18 years in prison.

"I’m Sumayyah Maryam Bailey and I am a MA film scholar at The University of Cambridge. Recently I graduated from Ravensbourne University London with a first class honours degree in Digital Film Production. I also recently entered my college snowball art competition in theme of opulence - I called my piece ‘The Oxymoron of Vintage Living’ and it focused on my experience as a #mixedracewoman wearing vintage clothes. I am an award-winning filmmaker, and autistic and asthmatic creator of the bookstagram and vintage fashion account, @sumaybay. I shot a film for the Wellcome Collection last year on chronic pain and I am currently writing on disability, specifically asthma, in film for my masters studies. It would be lovely to share my experience in academia to encourage fellow #mixedrace women and girls to never doubt themselves and better themselves academically. ✨" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ MY DM's ARE OPEN!!!
