THE BRIDE WORE BLACK/ La Mariée était en noir (François Truffaut, 1968)
Saw Truffaut’s THE BRIDE WORE BLACK yesterday, a clear homage to Hitchcock in many ways but without any of the visual precision or flair one would normally expect of either filmmaker. I’m puzzled by this film. It’s a very enjoyable watch — according to Truffaut, an exercise in plot based on a novel by Cornell Woollrich — and it definitely works on that level. Plus, there’s Jeanne Moreau,…

What do you think the Montely crew vs team Dracula would do on Valentinas day? Who will have a date? Who is going to use this day as an excuse to eat lots of chocolate? Who will drawn their sorrow and wallow in self-pity?
Quincey and Larry will go out on a date together. likely to the park or a zoo and then dinner. Sherlock and Watson will probably also go out, though they won't actively acknowledge it's any kind of date.
Jekyll/Hyde is aromantic and doesn't really care about the holiday but he is sending flowers to any prominent or favored lady (and gentlemen) friends that he particularly likes. I see him considering sending chocolates but ending up eating them himself.
Selma is using the holiday as an excuse to bake heart shaped sweets for everyone. She'll pester Henry/Edward into helping her and he'll grumble but secretly enjoy himself.
Erik will be a little bitter, he can't stop wondering what Raoul and Christine are up to and while he hopes they're happy he's still going to feel kind of alone watching other couples. He will be drinking wine and listening to sad music until the holiday is over. Theo will hang out with him since she's doing pretty much the same thing. Though her vampirism is under control she still doesn't trust herself enough to try and date or hang out with anyone outside of the crew.
Adam may pick flowers and leave them for his friends, he'd busy himself with helping set up any festivities. If he is lucky enough to have a date of some kind he's going to do his best to dress up and let Watson instruct him on how to be a proper gentleman.
.... Dracula is indifferent to valentines day. He might find a fresh infant for his brides.
Carmilla and Laura are having a romantic evening in, there will be dancing and candlelight.
Griffin is gorging himself on chocolate he stole. He's not really concerned about dating but he has a bit of a sweet tooth so he's indulging. I can also see him enjoying the atmosphere and festivities.
Dorian Gray is waiting for love letters, wine, roses and candy to come flooding in. He may send a few gifts to some people who's favor he's trying to gain or he'll send gifts to one admirer for the sole purpose of making another jealous. Valentines day is for creating and basking in drama.
Dr Moreau will give his beast folk flowers and candy, not because he actually cares but because he understands that sometimes he needs to make them feel cared for or they might turn on him. Doesn't actually concern himself with Valentines day on a personal level.
Imhotep is a 3000 year old mummy, he predates Valentines day. But seeing everyone being romantic will make him feel a little sentimental and sad. He'll use it as an excuse to take a day off and work at his alchemy.

Jean-Claude Brialy, Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo in A Woman Is a Woman (Jean-Luc Godard, 1961)
Cast: Jean-Claude Brialy, Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo. Screenplay: Jean-Luc Godard, based on a story by Geneviève Cluny. Cinematography: Raoul Coutard. Production design: Bernard Evein. Film editing: Agnès Gullemot, Lila Herman. Music: Michel Legrand.
Orson Welles is often quoted as having said, when he saw the production facilities available to him at RKO, "This is the biggest electric train set any boy ever had!" I imagine Jean-Luc Godard saying something like that when he was told that he could make his second feature film, after the success of Breathless (1960), in color and Franscope (an anamorphic wide-screen process like Cinemascope). But of course Godard and his cinematographer, Raoul Coutard, had no intention of using the wide screen for its conventional purpose, the epic and spectacular. Instead, many of the tricks the director and the cinematographer pulled off in A Woman Is a Woman were playful ones, like filming the tiny, cramped apartment of Angela and Émile in a medium more suited to Versailles. The effect is not only slightly giddy, but it also serves to emphasize the difficulties the couple are having in their relationship. The movie is brightly inconsequential, the kind of colorful musicalized nonsense that Jacques Demy would master a few years later with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), using the same composer Godard does, Michel Legrand. The success of Breathless seems to have gone to Godard's head a bit: He enlists its star, Jean-Paul Belmondo, as the third leg of the movie's romantic triangle, and has him speak a line about not wanting to miss Breathless on TV. Belmondo also encounters Jeanne Moreau in a cameo bit, asking her how Jules and Jim is going -- Godard's fellow New Wave sensation, François Truffaut, was in the midst of filming it with Moreau. The best thing A Woman Is a Woman has going for it is Karina, who was about to become Godard's muse and for a while his wife.

Are there any art blogs out there that focus on the art of only a SINGLE artist?
I’ve gone through a frustrating cycle of following those blogs with the URLs like “artist-magritte”, “artist-serebriakova”, “artist-varo” etc. – and then always unfollowing them again, because for some inexplicable reason they’re constantly reblogging art by OTHER artists. That is not what I signed up for!!!
I want to follow blogs that each post ONLY the work of my favorite artists >:(
ETA: Curse Tumblr’s 30-tag limit. The tags reflect only a small selection of the people whose art I want on my dash.

'Jules and Jim' – François Truffaut's ménage-a-trois on HBO Max and Criterion Channel
‘Jules and Jim’ – François Truffaut’s ménage-a-trois on HBO Max and Criterion Channel
Jules and Jim (France, 1962), the third feature from French New Wave icon François Truffaut, may be named for the two best friends who become virtually inseparable in pre-World War I Paris but it is centered on Jeanne Moreau’s Catherine, the woman both men love. Adapted from the novel by Henri-Pierre Roche, Truffaut’s picture explores the thirty year friendship between Jules (Oskar Werner), a…

Jeanne Moreau, Henri Serre, and Oskar Werner in Jules and Jim (François Truffaut, 1962)
Cast: Jeanne Moreau, Oskar Werner, Henri Serre, Vanna Urbino, Serge Rezvani, Anny Nelsen, Sabine Haudepin, Marie Dubois, Michel Subor. Screenplay: François Truffaut, Jean Gruault, based on a novel by Henri-Pierre Roché. Cinematography: Raoul Coutard. Production design: Fred Capel. Film editing: Claudine Bouché. Music: Georges Delerue.
Catherine (Jeanne Moreau) is insane, and Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim (Henri Serre) love each other more than either of them loves Catherine. That's obviously a reductive way of looking at the movies' most famous ménage à trois, but it's my takeaway from the most recent viewing of Truffaut's masterpiece. Why is Catherine insane? one should ask. Because she's a free spirit trapped in a woman's body when freedom for women can be glimpsed but not fully achieved. Note how liberated she becomes when she dresses as a man, smoking a stogie (pace Dr. Freud, but sometimes a cigar is more than just a cigar) and providing a light for a strange man outside of a pissoir. And at no time do Jules and Jim find her more sexually desirable, I think. Naturally, she marries Jules, the more repressed of the two, and finds further liberation by cheating on him rather than falling into the socially respectable roles of wife and mother. As for the "bromance" of Jules and Jim, that too skirts societal disapproval: The narrator tells us that their friendship was much talked about. Even separated by a war that puts them on opposing sides, each worries that he may find himself killing the other. But they survive, only to find Catherine testing their friendship. That it survives the test until Catherine kills one of them is the film's deepest irony. And Catherine is never able to find the freedom she seeks, even after death: Her desire to have her ashes scattered to the winds is thwarted by "the regulations," as the narrator (Michel Subor) tells us. It is, of course, one of the great films, made so by Moreau's tremendous performance, by Georges Delerue's score, and by Raoul Coutard's cinematography, but most of all by Truffaut's direction and (with Jean Gruault) endlessly fascinating script. Even Jules and Catherine's daughter, Sabine, is perfectly presented: Sabine Haudepin is one of the least affected, least annoying child performers ever to appear on screen.

A la plage, Noirmoutiers by Raoul du Gardier
A student of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Raoul Du Gardier had Gustave Moreau as his master. Before being appointed 'painter of the Navy' in 1923, Du Gardier had already made a career as a painter in this genre, participating in the Salon since 1894. He is one of the "traveling painters" who scour the different continents, visiting Africa, Turkey, Madagascar and Réunion. During his travels, he happily performs seductive genre scenes with overwhelming clarity.
