2024 MOVIE LIST

I re-watched High Sierra (1941)
A truly classic crime film.
After getting out of a prison, an ex con yearns for a better life, but false into one last heist.
Directed by Raoul Walsh and co-written by the great John Huston, High Sierra is yet another fantastic Humphrey Bogart film.
It's a gorgeous looking film with tons to love about it. Whether it be the locations, the characters, the heavy amount of old time charisma, or the whole heap of criminal lingo filled dialogue. "High Sierra" is a classic and it's a classic for a reason.
Bogart is cool as ever. A character actor's face with a leading man's attitude. He's easy to root for and easy to admire. A criminal with a heart of gold.
Now, there is one glaring issue with the film by today's standards, and that's a bit of racism. Actor/Comedian Willie Best has the unenviable reputation of playing stereotypically lazy and simple black characters. He definitely lives up to that reputation here, and I cringed each time he was on screen, which thankfully wasn't all that often. The script is definitely to blame for this, with Best's character obviously written from a place of ignorance by a pair of white men.
When we talk about these films, with clear racists tropes, it's always a good idea to acknowledge the racism and call it out. We shouldn't toss away whole films or pieces of art, but we should recognize the history in which these films were made and what was wrong about that history.
"High Sierra", despite this flaw, is a fantastic and beautiful film. One I adored watching. It's another film in Bogart's filmography that defines him as an actor and a film icon.
The film is truly about a man wishing he could change, wishing he could find his dream, and realizing that it's too late.
It's a sad tale that deserves to be seen.
I deeply recommend this one.
