I think one of the slept on things that makes The Secret History feel like a real world is Donna Tartt's willingness to introduce a character that is just never brought up again (or brought up once or twice again.)
Because i'm real life, not every person you meet is going to have significance in your life. Not everyone is going to change that plot. Think about the teacher that takes over when Julian leaves. Or the farmer who claims to have seen Bunny. Or Richard's one night stand. Even the man stalking Henry and Bunny in Italy doesn't show up later.
And not only does this fill the gaps in the world, it absolutely helps build suspense. You never know if a character might have significance later, because there's simply no pattern to follow. It keeps you guessing.
Did I mention I started rereading The Secret History

Hi, Howdy! Hey! I really love your novel!! I got a little confused by the 4 day, may maybe you help me please? who is it? why we got the bad end staying the night in Ren’s apartment and he disappear of the home screen? I can’t understand “unset memory” game, sorry if I wrote smth wrong or smth sounds rude, I swear that I didn’t mean it if happened, I’m really a fan of the novel, I’ve been playing the game since day 1 or 2 I guess, probably day 1, english isn’t my first language, but I tried lol
⌞♥⌝ I hope you don't mind me answering these as bullet points!! ^^
"It" will be revealed later in the game! So I won't reveal too much right now.
You can only get the Dead End in Day 4 by staying at Ren's apartment — the rest of your choices before that don't matter. I'd also pay closer attention to the black smoke and Ren's reaction towards it!
Ren disappears from the home screen because he promised to help the player out (and stop them from getting the Dead End again). Try replaying the game again from the beginning for a surprise!
"Unsent Memories" was another visual novel (initially being written by @10chimes / @unsentmemory, though the project has since been dropped and handed back to me /pos) and is set in the same universe as 14 Days With You. Its storyline and characters are completely separate from 14DWY, so you don't have to worry about them while playing 14DWY.
#I don't think a lot of people know this but River was originally my OC lmao#Obviously BEFORE Jesse picked him up and turned him into an entirely different character /pos#We originally planned for Riv and Ren to have a Billy and Stu dynamic; except River would pretend to be a himbo—#— The same way Ren would pretend to be some Normal Empathetic Guy™️ kjgskg#River was also going to be a lovesick serial killer who incapacitated Bunny so that they'd stay with & depend on him forever#Also because Jesse and I wanted to have a ''same production factory; different yandere'' kind of vibe with Riv and Ren (and their dynamic)#Like... Ren puts Angel above himself and craves THEIR satisfaction whereas River cares about himself and prioritises HIS own satisfaction#Ren would hit his best friend (River) with a car if it meant keeping Angel happy & by his side forever#River would hit Bunny with a car if it meant keeping them by his side forever (thus making him happy)#But!! After everything that's happened in the yandere community; Jesse (understandably) wanted to get away from that kind of environment#So he's since dropped Unsent Memories and hasn't really got any plans to work on it again or return to da yan vn circle#I'm also continuing to write 14DWY the way it was originally planned (with 2017!River only getting a brief cameo to serve up some lore </3)#—But I'm lowkey holding out just in case Jesse ever considers returning hehe :3 I like their version of River and I wanna do him justice#Until then though?? I'll yearnfully clutch my locket and wait for my lover to return from war.... (she has a literal 9-5 job now) /hj /p#GKJSDG I scrolled up and??? NOT ME RANTING IN THE TAGS AGAIN?????????? WHY DO I UNINTENTIONALLY YAP SO MUCH#I will 🤫🤐 now#💌 — answered.#💖 — 14 days with queue.#🖤 — shut up sai.#to be tagged later#weird0nerd

so i just got to watch some of the Lockwood & Co. show and the funniest difference between book and screen to me is when Lucy first speaks with the skull. Like, in the show, the skull says her name and she just passes out. But in the books, it gets all mysterious with saying things like "life is in deth and death is in life, and everything that was fixed now is fluid" and Lucy side-eyes it and just says "goodbye" before grabbing her doughnuts and leaving it behind.

forever going to believe in a version of the secret history where everything is fine in the end. a version where Bunny doesn’t find out about the murder, or maybe the murder never happens. maybe they all spend winter break at Francis’s house, and they eat grossly extravagant meals and drink too much wine and maybe Richard lets slip something about his real home and they all smother him with love like real friends do. maybe Bunny really does just die in a tragic hiking accident, or maybe he never dies at all. maybe Camilla says something so profound to Richard over a cup of wine sipped from teacups that he suddenly sees her as a person, as someone to cherish and not something to covet. maybe Henry and Richard become closer, maybe Charles and Camilla have a healthy sibling relationship. maybe Richard proposes, maybe Camilla says yes. and maybe, just maybe, when they’ve all graduated, they live happily. Bunny has married Marion and doesn’t contact the group anymore, except to send them Christmas cards full of photos of his children: all blond and round faced like he is, all cherub-faced angels like he never was. Francis doesn’t marry, but stays in his aunt’s house in the country; Richard and Camilla marry but never have children, they stay together and spend their days in Francis’s library and spend so much time with him they practically move in with him; Charles goes his own way, maybe he gets over his addiction and finds a sweet woman down south who promises that she’ll love him forever and no matter what; and Henry, he teaches at Hampden, in the same room Julian taught in before he passed, and he lets anyone study Greek if they want to because he longs more than anything to share the love of his life with anyone who will listen. little does he know that there have always been people listening, and a few in particular who still do.

Probably a lukewarm take, but other than the (lack of an) ending, the Laura and Ryan scenes are some of the worst written and conceived parts of The Quarry.
And this is completely separate from whether Ryan is interested in Dylan (he is, but that's another post and not important to this rant) or Kaitlyn; even if Ryan had no other potential relationships in the game, even if Laura wasn't practically married to Max, wearing his ring around her neck the entire time they're talking, it still would feel flat to me because nothing about it is earned.
Laura is on a killing spree with the single-minded goal of saving Max. She genuinely believes the only way to do that is to kill Chris Hackett. Even if you've made her argue with Max to the extent that they can, they're still a strong unit when she goes out to solve this werewolf thing once and for all. Even if you don't believe in love think their relationship would survive all this trauma, she deeply believes she owes it to him to rescue him, that is her entire guiding ethos during the game.
Ryan is going with her to try to keep that from happening because Chris has been his friend and mentor for years. We know Ryan has an absent mother, unmentioned father, and a potentially turbulent family life, and he's been coming to HQSC for so long that it feels like home to him, that Chris and his kids feel like family. Laura has already killed Kaylee. Even if Ryan completely bought into the werewolf thing by now, that would be a tough pill for him to swallow, given his reaction to her death.
Then, they fall in the titular Quarry and suddenly have the option to express a completely unearned sort of camaraderie with each other. Why is Laura asking Ryan about his love life in the first place? The question about him being single makes sense as a dig, but it doesn't make any sense for her to ask about him being a 'brooding and mysterious loner' because... she hasn't actually seen him do anything brooding or mysterious? How did she even get that impression? If Laura's got some kind of borderline psychic intuition then this is really the worst possible use of that ability--she should have foreseen her need to go to that motel and stay the fuck out of locked storm shelters instead.
It doesn't make a lick of sense for her to say that Kaitlyn looks up to him either. She hasn't seen that. Hell, we as players haven't even seen that! Kaitlyn seems generally tolerant of but unimpressed by Ryan. She has the option to be impatient with him multiple times and even get the chyron that she's ‘losing respect’ for him if he suggests she take the gun and go after Nick instead. This seems like an objectively good idea, since she's a much better shot than Ryan, a fact which the game keeps telling us despite refusing to give her a gun until the last possible second, though maybe the concern is that she'd have to drag Nick back to the campfire herself. (Honestly, I think Kaitlyn could do it, I think she's like a mighty ant who can lift many times her own weight, but that's not what this post is about.)
Ryan, for his part, shouldn't really be willing to talk about any of this with Laura either. He canonically doesn't even want to talk to his coworkers about his animation school decision (in the office scene with Dylan and at the campfire with Emma if you choose truth like a lunatic) and he's known them for at least two months, if not for years attending the same camp. But he met Laura a few hours ago and is suddenly willing to spill his guts about who he does or doesn't have a crush on and who does/doesn't have 'the hots' for him, despite the only experience they have together being her leaving his friend of several years dead facedown in a pool and expressing a strong desire to kill his father figure? I simply do not buy it.
I'm not sure if this was supposed to go along with the relationship system that they scrapped or what (there's not a single shred of Ryan and Laura stuff in the datamine that I've been able to find), but all it really serves to do is muddy the waters by trying to force some level of intimacy on Ryan and Laura before the big confrontation at the Hackett House. But that confrontation itself should have been the thing that forged that intimacy between them and allowed them to go on to fight Silas together.
Overall, I think it's a major sign that the back third of the game got a very rushed and, frankly, bad chop job (which we know is true) and that they struggled to tie the resulting loose threads off in a way that made any kind of narrative sense. It's a shame, because the writing in The Quarry is actually way better than most people give it credit for, it just wasn't allowed to pay off in a lot of ways that clearly were intended.
#the quarry#bunny rants#bunny rants about the quarry#I can see that Laura is an objectively good character but this makes me not fond of her#In the same way it seems to make a lot of people not fond of Ryan but I could never not be fond of Ryan#Laura & Ryan#ryan erzahler#laura kearney#imagine if the quarry was an actually finished game#sigh

Imagine being offended by someone interpreting the rebirth of a heavy set character as... heavy set. 💀
I've made it clear multiple times that I was asked to make my version of Bunny heavy set so that young girls who are heavier set feel seen. Bunny is the perfect representation for this in the form of a rebirth. If you think there's something wrong with people being a bit husky that's a you problem.

I am not going to entertain why you don’t want your age in your bio. That’s your preference. If you want to see my blog, my mature content, and the mature content I reblog, my preference is you have an age or age range publicly visible. It’s that fucking simple. Grow up.

Honestly Henry did commit horrible and inexcusable and unforgivable acts but it doesn't mean that every single thing he ever did for the entire book had to be out of ill intent.
He didn't save Richard during Winter to get him to trust him, he saved him because Richard was his friend he found freezing to death in an attic. He wasn't manipulating Camilla, he loved her and was trying to protect her and prevent her abusive brother from hurting her any more. He killed himself for a lot of different reasons but one of them was that it really was the only remaining way he could find to get everyone out of trouble and make things somewhat right again.
He surely was detached, and while he generally didn't feel as strongly as other people and even suppressed his own emotions to try and always be as rational as possible, it's not like he was completely incapable of feeling anything at all. In his own aloof way, he did care for them. I think that it's really the fact that despite everything there was some good in all of them that makes them so compelling, Henry included.
#i'll even go as far as to say that henry felt the strongest remorse out of all of them for bunny's death#but that's a whole other rant lol#i'm not even a henry apologist i just think he's a way more interesting and complex character than evil killer manipulator#of course people hate him if that's all you think he is#but there's more to him!!!#the secret history#tsh#henry winter#🌻

The Happy Bunny Tavern, a small joint nestled in the middle of nowhere, trees seemingly sprouting from its log walls and golden lanterns. Bunnies of all kinds are employed to carry drinks, take orders, and be anything short of a table to house a customers tankard of ale.
Even then, it was common for the weakest of bunny barmaids to be yanked by their ears and placed under a bounty hunter's boots as a footstool. The pub hosted mostly a series of regulars or dangerous drifters, patrons finding suspicion in any newcomers who were too bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to fit in.
Whether they be half-human hybrids or full pure-bloods under a black hood to keep their disguise, creatures of all kinds came to relish in the bars established cinnamon whiskey and cute bar staff who weren’t unfamiliar to being used and abused. Even the tavern’s owner, a vicious grim burgundy stoat who was no stranger to a few scars, was quite verbally profound when it came to ordering around her staff. She had amped up their marketability over the years, changing regular tan uniforms to hiked up shorts that showed off the staffs bunny tails, and bows clipped to each pointy ear, often which the right of a bunny waiter’s is cut in order to show their domestication to the tavern.
You were new, looking for any job you’d be hired for, a poor preyed creature who was turned away for being too lithe,” not enough muscle on your bones”, as each potential employer put it. But maybe no job was better than this job, a slave to your boss and any lowlife who walked in the door wanting a bunny playtoy. Whether it was sitting on a silvertailed wolf’s lap to nurse their drunken kisses and laps at your cute neck, or strung up on the dart board for sly weasels to throw pins and needles at, you were the equivalent of a stressball for any assassin, bounty hunter, or prey seller looking for a harmless treat to sink their teeth and claws into.
And you, a new sight for sore eyes, easily became a house favorite amongst those most sadistic. You were lucky when they only wanted company, or perhaps to see your cheeks puff out from tugging at the base of your ears, but the worst of the worst came when your least favorite customer, a thinly sharp coyote entered the tavern to request your presence to drink with him. You’d be down a cup of ale, room spinning and hazy-eyed whilst forced to put on a shameful strip show for him, his claws raking at your apron and thumbing your hiccupping mouth. The laughs and warm hands that smelled of dirt and dried blood became familiar, thin eyes of every canine, feline and aviary creature that wanted you for themselves digging into you.
At least the pay was nice, even if you had to pick yourself up in pieces after every shift.
#ripped the tavern name straight off of kung fu panda 4 and I have NO regrets#ik the reader bunny trope is overused but ill be honest I am IN LOVE with it and it always makes me giddy#kn1ves rants#knives rants#writing#x reader#reader inserts#yandere#self insert#reader insert#yandere imagines#fem reader#male yandere#yandere x reader#male reader#gn reader#gender neutral reader#x gn reader#x you#monsters#monster fucker#monster lover#terato#monster romance#monster fucking#teratophillia#x reader imagine#bunny reader#rambles#x reader smut

Carnists be like "oh don't worry about picking up your bunny when there's missiles, your life is more important than this sentient being who you decided to care for who is as helpless as a human toddler."
How the fuck is human life more important morally? How?
Fucking selfish, speciesist morons.

Have a little Legend age regression fic as a gift because you're a good person :]
It surprised nobody that Legend woke up feeling little. His nightmares had been worse than usual the night before, and his screams of agony hadn't only been from emotional pain. So, in a way, many breathed a sigh of relief that the protective fog of childhood had swept over their brother's mind.
Sky awoke to the feeling of spindly arms strong with lithe muscle circling around his arm, and the sound of muffled sobbing by his shoulder. Instantly, he knew who it was. Legend, his little brother, the snazzy veteran with a soft bunny's heart, now a child's mind in a weathered adult body.
"Hi there, little bunny. Do you wanna cuddle?" Sky whispered softly, his voice slightly gravelly due to it being early morning.
Legend raised his head, revealing bloodshot eyes filled with tears and pain. The boy barely spared a second to nod before he flung his arms around Sky's waist and burrowed his face into the soft, squishy fat of the older man's chest. He let out a small, happy noise when Sky sleepily held him close, weaving fingers through his strawberry blonde locks. Though, it didn't calm the gentle shivers that wracked through Legend's body, nor the tears that seeped into the other man's tunic.
"Everything okay?" Sky whispered, shifting a little to cover them both with his sailcloth.
"Mmmh... 'urts." Legend groaned, voice muffled by the chest he's resting on, but pained.
"Oh, poor thing..." Sky ducked his head forward, planting a gentle kiss on his brother's hairline. If anything, it made the boy cling to him harder, weeping openly now.
"It's okay, sweetie... you can cry, you're safe. It's okay..."
"I- I dun'- I don'wanna hurt... can- can you make th'urt go 'way?" Legend sobbed, voice shaking and hitching. His shoulders shuddered with every breath, eyes squinting open as he looked up at Sky.
Another presence approached slowly. With a signature smell of hay and goats with an undertone of dark magic, Twilight carefully sat down beside the pair.
"Hey hun, could ya drink this for me? It'll make ya feel better, promise!" Twilight said softly, offering a small potion vial housing a light pink elixr. Legend's go-to pain killer for when his joints were acting up.
Legend lifted his face off Sky's chest and eyed the liquid suspiciously. His nose scrunched with disgust. "Taste bad..."
"Mhm, I know, honey, I know. But if you drink it, you won' be in pain no more." Twilight's soft tone sank with pity. Then he leaned down, whispering like he was telling a secret. "If ya drink it, I'll ask Wild to make some apple crumble. Deal?"
Legend lay there for a few more seconds, and both Sky and Twilight waited patiently. Things took a little longer to process in his little mindset, but nobody minded. They just waited in silence as the cogs turned in his head, and he eventually pushed himself up, snatched the vial out of Twilight's hands, and downed it in one gulp. He gagged a little before he flopped down, back onto the mattress Sky had become.
They half expected Legend to say something else, but he'd already passed out again.
"Guess we're not moving anywhere today, huh?" Sky whispered with no amnosity behind his words, merely running a hand up and down Legend's spine in a way he hoped was soothing. Judging by his content sigh, it was effective.
"I'll go let the old man and the captain know. Get some rest, Sky." Twilight whispered back, ruffling Legend's hair affectionately and patting Sky on the shoulder.
So he did, slipping quickly into a peaceful slumber. For all he liked his personal space, Legend was actually quite a good hugger.
...
Poke.
"Sky." Poke.
"Sky! Wake up!" Pokepokepokepoke-
"Mmgh?" He groaned, half opening an eye to find Legend staring at him, face almost uncomfortably close. His face was poked again. "Oh, hi! D'ya need anything?"
"Can-" Legend paused, biting his lip and looking away. He shuffled backwards slightly.
"Hm? What's up, buddy?" Sky propped himself up with his elbows, tilting his head slightly.
"Can-youtellmeastoryplease-" He spoke quickly, looking away afterwards.
Sky's heart melted, and he barely resisted the urge to scoop the veteran up like a remlit and plop him on his lap. Instead, he just gave the boy a soft smile. "Of course! Have I ever told you about the time-"
And then he delved into a story- age appropriate, of course- and though it was fairly tame, Sky's deep storytelling voice carried across camp and before long, most of the chain had gathered around.
Legend stuck close by Sky, who'd taken a break from dramatic storytelling to eat an omelette, as all of the others took it in turns to tell tales of their lives. Wind told epic adventures of endless oceans and ancient sages (nobody questioned when it brought Time to tears). Wild shared frankly insane moments from his adventure, from tumbling down snowy mountains after his shield broke to diving into Death Mountain to tame a giant possessed robot. Time spoke of playing games with mysterious children within the Moon (nobody believed it for a second).
Hours passed this way, just laughing and telling life stories. It was almost enough to just pretend Legend had regressed only because he'd been feeling little and not because nightmares had woken him up screaming many times that night. The veteran showed no signs of recollection; he was happy, content to just be little and let his brothers care for him. He sat patiently while Wind and Warriors braided flowers into his hair, speaking very little but making excited noises whenever pleased. Wind couldn't imagine anything other than his little sister, but the comparison made his heart melt regardless.
Eventually, Wild had decided to start making the promised apple crumble. His plan had initially been to just slip away and make it in peace, but Legend had other plans.
"I wanna help! Can I cut the apples?" He asked earnestly, poking his head over Wild's shoulder.
"Sure! Just be very careful, okay? Don't be afraid to ask for help." Wild responded with a warm smile, handing the little veteran an apple and one of his blunter knives.
Legend nodded eagerly and scurried off. He placed the apple in his lap and chopped it with very precise cuts considering his mental age. It was good! He went back and forth to Wild with handfuls of chopped apple. Until he cut himself.
It had been an accident; he got carried away and cut too far and sliced the skin of his palm. At first, Legend just stared. Staring...
Then he burst into tears, cupping the injured hand with the other and holding them close to his chest.
"Woah- hey buddy, you okay?" Hyrule, being the closest, rushed over to help. His hands hovered awkwardly, with him not being used to dealing with crying children.
"M-m-my- my hand!" Legend wailed, turning to Hyrule with tears in his eyes. His little state... isn't good with handling pain.
"Hey, hey, it's okay! Gimme your hand, I'll show you something cool." Hyrule offered his hand, keeping a smile on his face. This tone seemed to work whenever Twilight cared for little Legend, so hopefully it'll be good-?
Sniffing, Legend slowly put his hurt hand in Hyrule's. With a small hum from the curly haired traveller, his palm lit up in a refreshing mint hue and all pain evaporated from the (admittedly small) wound. Legend watched in wonder, eyes sparkling. Hyrule just smiled and gave it a small, gentle kiss. What he wasn't expecting was for Legend to flop forward into his arms, face buried in the crook of his neck and the veteran's own arms latched around his waist.
"Thankyou!" Legend's voice, a little muffled, called out. His previous fear was replaced by warmth and an intense need to hug someone, but Hyrule didn't mind.
By now Wild had enough apples for now, so set them all in his cooking pot with a generous amount of brown sugar and cinnamon. Stirring occasionally, he let the mixture simmer over a low flame while he crumbled together flour, sugar, and butter. By the time it'd reached a nice consistency, the apple chunks had softened and the sugar had melted them slightly into a bubbling mixture. Deciding it's good enough, Wild crumbled the now crumbly dough over the top, finishing it off with brown sugar and oats. He then threw a little dirt over the fire, placing another pot over the top and placing ashes on top of that.
By the time he'd turned around, the scene was completely changed. Hyrule was gently rocking Legend back and forth while the boy clung to him happily, the traveller awkwardly looking to Wind for confirmation he was doing something right. Four and Sky sat beside eachother under a tree, with Four reading a book while Sky carved something out of wood. Warriors and Twilight were... wrestling??? For some reason, and Time was goading them on instead of stopping them.
You know what? Not his circus, not his monkeys. Actually, what is a monkey...? Ah whatever. Wild decided to just sit by Hyrule, Legend, and Wind. He contemplated just taking a nap, but decided against it. A burnt apple crumble would probably crumble (heh) Legend's fragile mental state into dust.
...
Long story short, everyone loved it. Legend burst into tears again and hugged Wild so tight he might've bruised a rib, but did he care? Absolutely not. He made his brother happy, and that's what mattered.
In fact, it was enough to soothe the veteran into a light snooze, which ended up trapping Wild. But, upon waking, Legend decided that maybe he was ready to be an adult again.
He can finally take on his responsibilities, knowing his brothers have his back.
