NASCAR Numerology: How NASCAR's Current Teams Got Their Numbers: Part Five.
Alright guys, we've gotten to the last part of this little miniseries.
Today we're covering:
Front Row Motorsports, who run the #34 Ford for Michael McDowell and the #38 for Todd Gilliland in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series.
Legacy Motor Club, who run the #42 Toyota for John Hunter Nemechek and the historic #43 for Erik Jones.
and JTG Daugherty Racing, who run the #47 Chevrolet for Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
Fittingly, we get to end on representation for all three brands.
Front Row Motorsports debuted in 2004, running the #92 Ford on a partial schedule with drivers like Brad Teague, Tony Raines, and Stanton Barrett, but they would fail to qualify for any races. Furthermore, the Mach 1 Motorsports team ran the #98/#96 car that year, splitting time between Ford and Dodge, and running drivers such as Todd and Geoff Bodine, Larry Gunselman, Derrike Cope, Chad Chaffin, and Randy LaJoie.
This team did manage to make some races (keyword: some) and in 2005, Mach 1 would attempt the full schedule with a #34 Chevrolet while another slew of drivers (mainly LaJoie, Chaffin, and PJ Jones) but by the end of 2005, the team was up for sale. Front Row Motorsports would buy this #34 car, as well as Mach 1's shop, and build their team around it.
Often running as a start-and-park team with a revolving door of drivers, Front Row finally got some stability in 2009, with John Andretti driving the #34, and dragging it up to three top twenty finishes, at Daytona, Loudon, and Fontana.
Andretti left after the 2010 Daytona 500, but the top twenty streak remained, with Travis Kvapil scoring an 18th at Talladega and Kevin Conway a 14th at the summer Daytona race.
David Gilliland (Todd's father) ran the full 2011 season and scored a third place at the Daytona 500, building on the results of the last three years to make Front Row Motorsports a proper contender on the superspeedways.
For 2012, Gilliland was moved to the #38 (more on that later) while David Ragan took over the #34. This car would top off FRM's superspeedway streak by winning the 2013 Aaron's 499 at Talladega.
Ragan would leave FRM after the 2015 Daytona 500 to get the opportunity to fill in for the injured Kyle Busch, so that season was a bit of a revolving door for the #34 yet again. Yet, for 2016, they got a technical alliance with Roush Fenway Racing in exchange for running Roush development driver Chris Buescher.
And Chris Buescher would win the 2016 Pennsylvania 400 for them on a Monday after a rainy weekend followed by a foggy weekend led to a segmented and ultimately shortened race. It took a bit of luck, but it got FRM its second win, and the first that wasn't on a superspeedway.
Chris Buescher went to JTG Daugherty of all places for 2017 (more on that later), so FRM hired Landon Cassill, without much success, before signing Michael McDowell for 2018.
McDowell has seen FRM become a legitimate team, winning the 2021 Daytona 500 and the 2023 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard at the IMS Road Course. Furthermore, in 2024, now in alliance with Team Penske, Front Row Motorsports is no longer an ironic name, as McDowell has started first or second multiple times this season, including at Daytona, Atlanta, and even Gateway, the latter two being pole positions.
Michael McDowell, however, will be moving to the Spire Motorsports #71 for 2025.
FRM has built their numbering scheme off of the #34, running other cars such as the #35, #37, and most commonly the #36, but its second full time car has been the #38.
Driven by David Gilliland from 2012-2015 and son Todd Gilliand ever since 2022, the car has also seen drives from Landon Cassill, David Ragan (in a return to FRM), John-Hunter Nemechek, Anthony Alfredo, and Zane Smith. With four top tens and a further ten top twenties, 2024 has thus far been the most successful season to date for the #38.
FRM will run a third full time car in 2025, having bought a charter from SHR, and has signed SHR's Noah Gragson, but it is unknown was number he will run. FRM ran the #36 this season for Kaz Grala, but Bob Jenkins says he's not married to this numbering scheme. Still, even numbers in the mid-30s are as close to consistent numbering as FRM has ever gotten, so I hope they do decide to stick with the #36.
Onto Legacy Motor Club.
First things first, this team is a Frankenstein's Monster mess of forgotten NASCAR teams in hilarious fashion. Petty Enterprises, officially ran from 1949 to 2008, when sponsorship could not be found, leading to the team merging with Gillett-Evernham Motorsports for 2009. Gillett-Evernham Motorsports consisted of Evernham Motorsports, the former Dodge factory team that ran the #9 and the #19, MBV Motorsports (which was essentially the #10 car owned by Valvoline at this point), and money from George Gillett, who was at the time the controversial owner of the Montreal Canadiens and Liverpool FC.
So already, you had the Petty #43, Petty #45, Evernham #9, Evernham #19, and Valvoline #10 merging into one team, but for 2010, they also bought Yates Racing to take over Paul Menard and his #98 Ford. This allowed the entire team to switch from Dodge to Ford.
So come 2010, the team is running the #9, #19, #43, and #98 with relics from three different numbering schemes remaining in the team. It's freaking awesome.
The #19 and #98 went away after 2010, leaving the team with the #9 and the #43.
The #9 was initially their most successful car, with Kasey Kahne winning Sonoma 2009 and Fall Atlanta 2009 with the team, before Australian Marcos Ambrose won Watkins Glen for the team in 2011 and 2012.
The #43 would, to its credit, with the 2014 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona with Aric Almirola, and it would become the team's only car after 2016.
After the 2021 season, GMS Racing, a truck team, bought into Petty, becoming Petty GMS. Ahead of the 2023 season, the team became Legacy Motor Club, with Jimmie Johnson buying in, Richard Petty chasing out, and Maury Gallagher of GMS becoming majority owner. Petty remained involved a spokesman for the team, however.
So, finally, onto their numbers. They run the #43 and have since practically the beginning of time, because that was Richard Petty's number? Why, well, that actually takes us to their second car, the #42, which was Lee Petty's number.
Why did Lee Petty pick the #42? Legend has it was the first two numbers in his license plate.
So, Lee Petty ran the #42, his son Richard ran the #43, Richard's son Kyle would eventually run the #44, and Kyle's son Adam would run the #45. Each generation building on the last. When Adam died, Kyle took over the #45 in his memory.
Thad Moffitt in the Truck series is a grandson of Richard Petty through Petty's youngest daughter Rebecca, and he continues this trend by running the #46.
In any case, when Petty GMS bought a second car in 2022, they chose to run the #42 - recently vacated by Chip Ganassi - reuniting the original two Petty numbers.
This arrangement continued as Petty became Legacy and eventually switched to Toyota for 2024. Currently the #43 is driven by Erik Jones, who won Darlington in it in 2022, and the #42 by John Hunter Nemechek.
Also, fun fact, Kyle Petty drove the #42 at Team SABCO (which would eventually become Chip Ganassi Racing) from 1989 to 1996, so it was a Petty number even when it wasn't.
And now JTG Daugherty Racing. It started in 2007, running a second car (#47) in alliance with the Wood Brothers. I cannot find any specific reason for the #47, only that Tad Geschickter ran a #47 Busch car ever since 1996, so maybe it was an availability thing. In any case, they ran the #47 and made their Cup debut in 2007, with Ken Schrader and Jon Wood each trying and failing to qualify for a race.
The #47 managed a few starts in 2008 with Marcos Ambrose, finishing third at the Glen, which prompted JTG to split with the Wood Brothers to try and go full time for the 2009 season with Ambrose in a #47 Toyota. This lasted two years before Mabrose moved to the aforementioned Richard Petty Motorsports, with JTG instead drafting in Bobby Labonte.
They would sign AJ Allmendinger in 2013 as Labonte began scaling back his races, and with AJ full time in 2014, they'd win at Watkins Glen. Allmendinger would last until 2018, when Ryan Preece was hired for that car, but then Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was chosen for 2020. Ricky would win the 2023 Daytona 500 with the team.
JTG Daugherty also briefly has a second car, the #37 - ten less than #47, also apparently Tad used this number in college sports - the #37 ran with Chris Buescher for 2017, 2018, and 2019, before running with Ryan Preece for 2020 and 2021.
This brings up another interesting aspect of JTG Daugherty Racing - despite the fact that they're a Chevy team, they kinda have this unique relationship with RFK Racing. First of all, Chris Buescher was a Roush development driver. Second of all, that #37 car for Buescher was run on the charter for Roush's #16.
Third, was that when Roush took Chris Buescher back for the 2020 season, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. then went the other way, going from the Roush #17 to the JTG Daugherty #47.
Oh, and as recently as 2023, JTG Daugherty's pit crew was on loan from Roush. Yeah, odd.
So yeah, that is all 36 chartered teams for the 2024 NASCAR Cup series and the story of a couple other numbers that are relevant to the story. I hope you guys enjoyed all that, but I think I'm gonna write about some other motorsports for a little while. The blog has been a bit NASCAR heavy lately and this week added a whole five extra blogposts to it.
I do enjoy blabbing on about NASCAR, but I also enjoy blabbing on about MotoGP and Indycar. Formula One is also a sport that exists.

CINCINNATI -- Deshaun Watson showed up in a black tuxedo for his first NFL start. From his snazzy bowtie to his game-turning scramble, he did it all his style.
The rookie ran 49 yards for a touchdown and led the Houston Texans' depleted offense to a late clinching field goal in a 13-9 victory over the Cincinnati Bengalson Thursday night.
"I was just trying to make a play, I found a hole and broke away," he said.
Yes, it was that easy.
Watson showed up in a black tuxedo -- it was his 22nd birthday, no less -- and showed the flash that helped him lead Clemson to a national title last season. He avoided the rush and ran 49 yards for a 10-3 lead late in the first half, dashing past befuddled defenders.
Some birthday.
"The first start on my birthday was pretty emotional," said Watson, wearing a Texans T-shirt to his postgame media availability.
The Texans (1-1) got the most out of their depleted offense, and then let their defense do the rest. The Bengals (0-2) have failed to score a touchdown in their two games to open a season for the first time in their 50 seasons.
The Bengals are the first team since the 1939 Eagles to open a season with two home games and fail to get in the end zone, according to information from the Elias Sports Bureau shared by ESPN.
"I am shocked," coach Marvin Lewis said.
Watson led a 13-play drive that set up Ka'imi Fairbairn's 42-yard field goal with 1:56 left. The Bengals got the ball, but turned it over near midfield on a fourth-down completion. After a punt, they ran one more play with 2 seconds left that didn't get far.
Cincinnati lost to the Ravens 20-0 at Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday, the first time in their history that they opened the season blanked at home. Andy Daltonthrew four interceptions and lost a fumble.
The Bengals managed only three field goals by Randy Bullock on Thursday. Dalton fell to 1-6 career against the Texans, including a pair of playoff losses. He was 20 of 35 for 224 yards with three sacks.
"Very surprised," receiver A.J. Green said. "We practice well, but when it comes to the game, we're out of character. I don't know what we're doing out there."
Watson directed an offense missing three tight ends because of concussions, along with receiver Will Fuller V and guard Jeff Allen. The Texans kept it simple, and Watson avoided the game-turning mistake despite heavy pressure from the Bengals.
Watson was 15 of 24 for 125 yards with three sacks and no interceptions. He ran five times for 67 yards. Watson became the first rookie quarterback to win his first start on the road in a prime-time game since the Eagles' Joe Webb in 2010, according to Elias.
The Bengals became the first team that opened the season with five scoreless quarters since the 2009 Rams, who went 1-15.
They thought they finally had a touchdown when Tyler Eifert caught a pass from Dalton in the end zone in the third quarter -- the videoboard broke into a touchdown song -- but the tight end had stepped out of bounds before making the catch, nullifying it. Cincinnati settled for its third field goal.
STATS
Texans CB Kareem Jackson got his first career sack. ... Watson's TD came on the longest run by a Texan since Arian Foster had a 51-yard run against the Jaguars in 2014. ... The Bengals went 76 minutes, 16 seconds before getting Bullock's field goal for their first points of the season.
OUCH!
On the final play with multiple laterals, Dalton got the ball back and threw it to center Russell Bodine, who was leveled by J.J. Watt to end the game.
"Zig-zag, zig-zag, zig-zag, tired, tired, tired," Watt said, describing the multi-lateral play. "Thank you for throwing it to the guy closest to me -- body slam."
WATT'S RETURN: That wasn't Watt's only emphatic play as he got back in form. He returned from a back injury that wiped out most of his 2016 season and managed only one tackle and one quarterback hit during an opening 29-7 loss to the Jaguars. On Thursday, he had six tackles, knocked down one pass and hit Dalton once.
TRADING JERSEYS
Watson and Bengals rookie running back Joe Mixon exchanged jerseys on the field after the game.
INJURIES
The Texans lost two cornerbacks. Johnathan Joseph hurt his right shoulder while making a tackle in the first half and didn't return. Kevin Johnson hurt his left knee in the third quarter and was out. The Texans already were missing LB Brian Cushing. He's in the NFL's concussion protocol and has been suspended 10 games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
Bengals: CB Adam "Pacman" Jones returned from his one-game NFL suspension for an offseason conviction and hurt his right elbow in the fourth quarter, but returned and finished the game.

The Patriots are hoping Antonio Brown is Darrelle Revis 2.0, not Chad Ochocinco
Tumblr media
New England is signing the former Steeler and Raider wideout.
It makes so much sense. It makes no sense at all.
The Patriots reportedly signed former four-time All-Pro Antonio Brown Saturday, hours after the Raiders released him. In one move, the architect of the “Do You Job” Patriot Way snapped up the league’s most talked-about player after he was deemed too much for the most dysfunctional franchise in the NFL to handle.
And it could work out brilliantly.
For New England head coach Bill Belichick, signing Brown is another low-risk, high-reward reclamation project in a career filled with them. For the all-star wideout, it’s a chance to prove he can be a team player after forcing his way out of Oakland and Pittsburgh.

Brown reportedly signed a one year, $15 million deal with $9m guaranteed to join the Pats. While New England’s buy-low strategy may earn worthy comparisons to Randy Moss’s 2007 emancipation from Oakland, another former Patriot could be a better fit. The wideout’s contract more closely mirrors 2014’s one year, $12 million pact (with a $20 million team option the following season) for Darrelle Revis.
Revis took that deal looking to rehabilitate his value as a cornerback following a 2012 lost to injury and a fairly mediocre 2013. It worked brilliantly; the future Hall of Famer won his only Super Bowl ring with New England. Though the club declined the team option it never intended to invoke, Revis still signed a five-year, $70 million contract with the Jets after proving he was still an elite defender.
That will be Brown’s goal. There’s reason to believe he can get there.
The Patriots have the cap space to make this a negligible risk
Brown is guaranteed $9 million this fall. That’s a big number, but it fits cleanly within the cap space remaining on New England’s salary sheet for 2019. Brown joins the Pats as their fifth-highest paid player and has the option to finish the year with the team’s richest salary outside of Tom Brady if he can live up to the as-of-yet undefined bonuses and escalators in his contract.
If Brown fails to pan out, he can be released with zero repercussions on the team’s cap in 2020 or beyond. This is a very possible option. Belichick has never been shy about cutting players once they’ve outlived their usefulness or failed to make the impact he’d hoped. Russell Bodine, acquired from the Bills for a fifth-round pick August 30 and the team’s presumptive starter at center after David Andrews’ was placed on injured reserve, lasted barely a week before getting his walking papers.
There’s a massive difference between the Raiders’ ongoing sideshow and the French Foreign Legion camp the Patriots run. Brown pushed his boundaries in Oakland, leaning on the franchise’s less-than-strict culture — especially following the signings of Vontaze Burfict and Richie Incognito — to turn internal issues into external ones. That won’t fly in New England, a franchise used to assimilating talented-but-outspoken wideouts into their culture. Moss, who set a league record with 23 touchdown catches in 2007 is the prime example, but a 33-year-old Chad Ochocinco was also mostly a model citizen in Foxborough.
If he can fit that mold, there’s a chance Brown comes out with more money than he would have earned in Oakland in this whole saga. The outspoken wideout was set to earn $15.125 million with the Raiders this year. If he lives up to expectations in New England, he’ll make $15 million with the opportunity to negotiate a new contract — and new guarantees — in 2020. Even after a tumultuous preseason, Brown can still make the money he left behind in California. He might even be able to make more.
Two surprising decisions allowed the Patriots to add two former All-Pros to their WR corps
New England got a surprising boost this preseason when Josh Gordon’s indefinite suspension was lifted, clearing him to return to a depleted receiving corps. But if Gordon addresses the team’s biggest hole — a lack of targets for Tom Brady — a contributing Brown makes it one of the team’s biggest strengths.
Brown can’t be activated in time for the team’s Sunday night season opener against the Steelers and may ride the pine for a few weeks as he acclimated to a dense New England playbook. If — and, given Brown’s past six months, if appears to be the correct word rather than “when” — the former Steeler and Raider takes the field, he’ll be a boon for Tom Brady. Two months ago, the Patriots planned on building their aerial offense around a receiver who does his best work in the slot (Julian Edelman) with little established depth around him. Then they added a field-stretching deep threat who opens up every intermediate route in the playbook with Gordon’s return. Now they’ll add Brown, who can line up almost anywhere in the offense and burn you regardless of the route he’s given.
So how would prospective opponents plan against that? Who gets double-teamed in a three-wideout set of Brown-Gordon-Edelman? When would you dare inch your safeties close to the line of scrimmage knowing the Patriots now have two different receivers who could toast you over the top, and a slot wizard who can fill the gaps they leave in their wake?
There are concerns, of course. Brown effectively complained his way out of Oakland. With that came a sustained absence in the preseason and concerns not only about his role off the field but potential rust on it. Even so, his production on the field — a track record of big games and consistent performance — made this a worthwhile gamble for Belichick.
While Brown is 31 years old, his 2018 showed no signs of slowing down. In 15 games he had 104 catches for 1,294 yards and a league-high 15 touchdowns. Even if his production drops off, he’ll still be a valued weapon for a Patriots team that looked like it hadn’t done enough to surround Brady with talent headed into the 2019 season.
The Patriots know what Antonio Brown brings to the table; in six career games against New England, Brown had 450 receiving yards and four touchdowns — the equivalent of a 1,200-yard, 11-touchdown regular season. Belichick is sticking his neck out for a very un-Patriot Way player because he knows exactly what he’s capable of on the field. After months of wondering how Brady and his cohort would react to Rob Gronkowski’s departure, New England found a way to add another All-Pro to an often-devastating aerial attack.
These gambles haven’t always paid off for Belichick and his team, but they’ve never cost much after crapping out. Brown will make a hefty sum to suit up in red, white, and blue this season. He also knows he’ll be watched more closely than ever before and that the runway he tore through in Oakland is the shortest he’s ever seen in New England.
This could be an amazing preseason win for the Patriots, but even if the signing blows up in their faces it’ll only be an M-80 instead of a rocket launcher.

2017 Bengals Preseason Week 1: Top 5 Questions
Tumblr media
The Bengals will start the preseason against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As we come closer to the game, let’s look at the top five questions, in no particular order, that is being asked before the first game in the preseason.
AROUND COVER32
The Latest: Packers release troubled, DT, Letroy Guion
Around the NFL: HOF RB, Ladainian Tomlinson, proves he is still in a class all of his own
What’s Trending: Jets’ DE, Sheldon Richardson, takes shots at Brandon Marshall
Looking Ahead: Patriots’ offense set up well for QB transition after 2018
Game Preview: Preseason Week 1: Bears vs Broncos game preview
What’s going on with Joe Mixon?
The latest draft of the Bengals depth chart, Joe Mixon is placed as the number four back. Now, this could be because the Bengals are hiding their official starting lineup, or they still want to see what they have in the rookie. The first option seems more plausible. Mixon has been making great strides learning the playbook and keeping up with the first string in training camp. Joe Mixon and Jeremy Hill are rumored to be competing for the starting slot at running back.
What will the offensive line look like?
This question has been surrounding the Bengals since free agency. Losing Andrew Whitworth and Kevin Zeitler was devastating. To make matters worse, the Bengals almost neglected offensive linemen in the draft. Offensive line coach Paul Alexander stated there is still work to be done, but he likes what he sees. While Clint Boling, Andre Smith, and Russell Bodine are decent players, the line as a whole will need to step it up if they don’t want to be rated in the bottom five for offensive lines this year.
Who will be the kicker?
For now, this is Randy Bullock. The competition is fierce in training camp. However, Bullock still holds a slight edge over Jake Elliott. Special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons still has a positive outlook on Elliott and so does Cincy nation. Both kickers are considered average. Do the Bengals want to continue with the kicker they paid a high price for in the offseason? Or, do they want to go with the rookie that has similar traits for pennies on the dollar? This game may paint a better picture, but don’t expect this decision to be immediately after Friday.
Is AJ McCarron being traded to Denver?
Denver Broncos general manager John Elway was quick to extinguish this rumor. No. And he did not dance around the answer either. Elway has expressed that he has faith in his quarterbacks. Being a two-time super bowl quarterback champion, I would take his word for it. However, Sandy Clough states that a close source in the Bengals’ camp is saying both teams are trying to make a deal. Consider this fake news until real evidence is provided.
What is the biggest weakness right now as a whole?
Biggest weakness is a combination of the punt returner and the offensive line. The Bengals have been looking to utilize John Ross for punt returning. However, Ross hasn’t returned a punt since his freshman year at the University of Washington. Ross is still learning the mechanics and footwork for returning punts. This is expected to be cleaned up rather quickly as the Bengals have been placing a high focus on this for him.
The offensive line is no great site either. As stated before, the line needs a lot of work. Luckily, the Bengals have brought in plenty of prospects to play with to find the right chemistry. It is important that they figure out who is starting sooner rather than later so they can become a cohesive unit. Expect a lot of changes on the line in the Tampa Bay game to determine who fits the system and who does not.
Synopsis
Tune in on Friday, August 11 to watch the Bengals take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The way we look at it, McCarron is here to stay, Mixon is just paying dues as a rookie, Elliott has competition, and the line has work to do. The first game will tell us a lot. Hopefully, it will have more positives than negatives.

Andy Dalton throws routes to John Ross soon after Bengals' apply Sunday - Cincinnati Bengals Web site
CINCINNATI — Lengthy soon after the Cincinnati Bengals experienced concluded their third apply of instruction camp, a few figures remained on 1 of the taking part in fields: quarterback Andy Dalton, rookie huge receiver John Ross and Dalton’s 3-year-previous son, Noah.
Dalton threw passes to Ross for about fifteen minutes with Noah chasing soon after him ahead of Dalton put Noah on his shoulders to signal some autographs for the remaining supporters in attendance.
Dalton mentioned he required to work with Ross precisely mainly because the receiver is nevertheless limited in what he can do. Ross experienced offseason labrum surgical procedures and has not been cleared to apply without the need of limitations. When Ross can do specific drills and field punts, he’s not doing any seven-on-seven, 9-on-seven or eleven-on-eleven drills nonetheless.
“Appropriate now he’s not in a position to get the reps that most people else is in a position to get,” Dalton mentioned. “There is the no speak to matter right now for him, so the only time you’re obtaining it is afterward. I was just attempting to take advantage of the extra minimal time that we can get, and just get that work in that we aren’t in a position to get in apply.”

Ross is nevertheless performing by means of some rookie expanding pains, dropping a number of passes on his to start with working day. He is also been performing on finding and obtaining his timing down while fielding punts.
Ross scored four touchdowns as a kickoff returner in higher education, but returned only four punts in the course of his freshman year at Washington.
Padded procedures: The Bengals wore shoulder pads for the to start with time Sunday, placing them 1 stage nearer to their preseason opener from the Buccaneers on Aug. eleven. They will put on full pads for their Monday afternoon apply.
“It’s a different stage, a different phase to what you’re doing in football and you’re attempting to make that development, finding out to play at the rear of our pads and fall our knees and have fantastic pad level,” coach Marvin Lewis mentioned. “We’ll see how the tape appears to be like.”
Overheard at camp: “seventy four, you’re on the ground a large amount!” — Lewis to right tackle Jake Fisher.
Kicking struggle: Jake Elliott and Randy Bullock every single attempted kicks on Sunday, with Jonathan Brown sitting out. Bullock did not overlook a kick and was fantastic from 28, 38, 33 and 35 yards he tried using the 33-yarder two times and created it both of those instances. Elliott was fantastic from 28, 38 and 35 yards he tried using the 33-yarder two times and missed the to start with 1. The Bengals blew the whistle on Elliott and Bullock’s 33-garden tries to test to distract them and get them to work by means of unique situations.
By two days, Bullock is eight-for-eight, Elliott is 4-for-5 and Brown is 2-for-3.
Smith back again at right guard: Following 1 working day of taking part in right tackle with the second team, Andre Smith was back again at right guard with the to start with team, exactly where he has been taking part in all summer months. Cincinnati Bengals 2017 Draft Grade
Here is the grade for the Cincinnati Bengals 2017 Draft. Every player receives a small scouting report
The Bengals draft began with John Ross, wide receiver from Washington. Ross made news by running a record breaking 4.22 40 time at the Combine after a tremendous year at Washington where he consistently took the top off of opposing defenses, Ross has the ability to separate against every defense that he faces and has the ability to track the ball downfield with ease. However Ross is grossly undersized for an NFL receiver and has had several issues with injuries over his college career, while his slight frame could cause injuries as a pro and has been pushed around by larger defenders. Ross should start right off the bat as a rookie and take a safety and corner out of the equation due to his game breaking speed, though he might not get 1000 yards as a rookie his presence on the field will greatly help Andy Dalton and A.J. Green. The next selection for the Bengals is Oklahoma runningback Joe Mixon. Mixon has the athletic ability to be a top 10 pick in the draft and has shown the speed, power and elusiveness as a runner to start and be successful right away along with above average hands coming out of the backfield. However Mixon was taken off of several NFL draft boards after an incident in his freshman year where he struck a woman he was having an argument with, though he also was unable to take over as the main runner in the Oklahoma offense. Mixon has the skills of a 1st rounder but he is brought into a very crowded backfield in Cincinnati, however he has the tools to receive a very large amount of carries over his time for the Bengals. Don’t look for him to start as a rookie but he could get some work when Bernard and Hill need a breather. The next selection for the Bengals is Kansas State pass rusher Jordan Willis. Willis took the NFL by storm after a very impressive Combine and Senior Bowl where he showed the strength and burst to beat offensive tackles to the edge and could add some burst to the Bengals outside pass rush. However Willis was not as impressive on film, showing a lack of bend when attacking the edge while not showing the burst that he put on display at the Senior Bowl. Willis has the athleticism to be a good pass rusher but will likely need to start in a wide 9 in a limited role. Willis could turn into a very good defensive end due to his speed but will need time before he is an every down starter. The next pick of the Bengals is another pass rusher in Auburns Carl Lawson. Lawson shows the explosive speed, strength and bend of a very good outside pass rusher along with a top notch get-off and powerful and active hands with the speed to get around bigger tackles and the power to get under the pads of quicker tackles. However Lawson has had major issues with injuries including a hip injury and a tore ACL that has limited his playing time but he also lacks great length for an outside rusher with short arms and a smallish frame. Lawson was loved during the pre draft process with some scouts believing he could be as high as a late 1st round pick and if he stays injury free he could turn into a dominant rusher for the Bengals but he will likely need to limit his snaps to get the most out of his explosive rushing ability. The 2nd of the Bengals fourth round selections is Tennessee wide receiver Josh Malone. Malone brings very good size to the receiver position along with very good deep speed showing good stats with 972 yards receiving at 19.4 yards a reception. However Malone has some issues with his hands and only had one good statistical season during his last year. Malone doesn’t have consistent production but he has the size and speed to win jump balls deep down field. The last 4th round selection for the Bengals is Michigan defensive tackle, Ryan Glasgow. Glasgow was a large and powerful interior presence for the Wolverines with good pad level and strength to take up double teams in the Big 10. However Glasgow has issues as a pass rusher and was taken off of the field in passing situations and will likely continue to do so as a pro. Glasgow will likely find a place as a 2 down run stuffer for the Bengals due to his lack of ability to rush the passer though he could learn to be more efficient as an interior pass rusher. The next selection is Memphis kicker Jake Elliott. Elliott has shown very good accuracy over his career, especially when kicking extra points and shows good, but not elite power on kickoffs. Elliott has some issues with longer kicks with a career long of 56. Elliott should be the starting kicker for the Bengals due to his draft status and the uncertainty of Randy Bullock. The next pick is Utah offensive lineman J.J. Dielman. Dielman has experience at several spots on the offensive line that gives him a versatility that will allow him to work at center as well as tackle if asked to, more of a finesse player but has the agility to continually stay in front of defenders at the point of the attack. Dielman doesn’t have great length to stick at tackle and has had issues with overall strength along with an injury that limited his involvement in the Combine. Dielman has the opportunity to make the roster as the swing interior lineman but he could turn into a starting caliber center if Bodine is still inconsistent. The next pick for the Bengals is Oklahoma linebacker Jordan Evans. Evans has good size and great speed to the linebacker position that allows him to cover receivers and tight ends with ease and has the ability to elude blockers when asked to defend the run. Evans has issues when taking on blockers and lacks elite size to stay at middle linebacker at the pro level, will need to add strength to his frame. Evans should provide a great backup plan and should play the nickel linebacker position and special team player, though he could turn into a starter in a few years if he is able to show great coverage ability. The second 6th round selection is Brandon Wilson, an athlete from Houston. Similar to Brandon Williams from last year, Wilson is making the transition to defensive back and has shown off elite explosion and speed during the pro day and has shown ability to return kicks and play special teams at a very high level. Wilson lacks the technique of a defensive back and has a long way to go to become a starter with stiff hips and difficulty reading the receivers routes. Wilson will be a special teamer first and take his time to find his niche in and NFL system. The final pick of the Bengals is Buffalo tight end Mason Schreck. Schreck has good athleticism overall and has the ability to play as an inline tight end or move receiver and shows good hands as a receiver. However he will need to improve his strength overall since he was pushed around by larger linebackers, and will need to show more ability as a run blocker. Schreck will likely need to make the team as a special team player but he could make the roster if he shows good blocking ability. The Bengals draft took many people unprepared due to the selection of John Ross with the 1st round pick but they were able to add weapons on offense to make Andy Daltons life much easier while adding the outside pass rushing threat that they had lacked over the past couple of years. They took chances on athletic players late in the draft with the hope that they could play up to their potential later on. Overall the Bengals added a lot of talent to an already talented roster and despite the reach for Ross they were able to select several steals like Willis and Lawson. I think the Bengals more than deserve a B+ grade

In the nfl, the team with most rotten record gets the first pick, the team with profit from worst record gets 2nd pick etcetera. The reasoning is that the worst team needs essentially the most help so they get to pick out from any college player they in order to wholesale Cincinnati Bengals jerseys https://www.jerseyscincinnatibengals.com/cheap-Cincinnati-Bengals-NFL-Bodine-Russell-Birthdate-6-30-1992-jerseys-a274

5 winners and 4 losers from the Texans’ win over the Bengals
“Thursday Night Football” wasn’t pretty, but had its moments.
The Texans and Bengals faced off in the first real Thursday Night Football game of the season — filled with Color Rush uniforms and bad football.
Both teams came into the game having had miserable Week 1 games. The Texans benched Tom Savage in a 29-7 loss to the Jaguars, and the Bengals got shut out 20-0 against the Ravens. On a short week of rest, one team was going to come out feeling better about themselves, and the other, not so much.
Thursday, Deshaun Watson made his first start, and the Bengals were hoping to finally score their first touchdown of the season. That didn’t happen for the Bengals, whose only scores were a trio of field goals by Randy Bullock. They fell to the Texans 13-9 at home.
Here are the winners and losers from the matchup.
Winner: Being at the right place at the right time
John Ross — the NFL Combine’s 40-yard dash king — made his NFL debut on Thursday night. It didn’t get off to a great start. On his first touch, Kareem Jackson popped the ball loose.
It fell right into the hands of Jadeveon Clowney.
Clowney took the ball down to the 20-yard line, and the Texans soon got their first points of the game with a field goal.
Unfortunately for Ross, he wasn’t able to get a second chance at glory like Kareem Hunt did last week.
Loser: Texans defenders near A.J. Green
There weren’t a whole lot of Bengals highlights in this one. If there was going to be one, you had to figure it was going to come from A.J. Green.
But you may not have expected three Texans to be on him while making a leaping catch:
Green finished the game with five catches and 67 yards.
Loser: Not knowing your boundaries
The Bengals looked like they might actually score a touchdown at one point (they didn’t) until Tyler Eifert basically ruined it.
Eifert, who was wide open in the back of the end zone, was calling for the football. Except he was calling for it while he was out of bounds — way out of bounds.
He established himself back in, but you can’t be the first to touch the football after that, so he was called for illegal touching. The Bengals were forced to settle for a field goal because of it.
Winner: Geno Atkins welcoming the rook
Deshaun Watson was making his first NFL start on Thursday, and Geno Atkins gave him a taste of what getting swept off your feet by a two-time All-Pro feels like.
However ...
Winner: Answering a big hit with a big run
Watson, just as he’s done in the past, was able to answer that big hit with his first career rushing touchdown.
He took this one 49 yards to the house, as he weaved through the Bengals defense. He even got a nice stiff arm in there too.
That’s probably not going to be the last time we see that.
Loser: Getting taken off your feet by J.J. Watt
The Bengals got the ball back with seconds left. They did their best attempt to complete a Cal-Stanford miracle finish, but J.J. Watt is not as forgiving or helpful as a marching band.
Andy Dalton would get a mean mug for a receiver setting him up like that. If Russell Bodine did the same, you really couldn’t blame him. Watt shook his soul.
Loser: Sad fans
The Bengals have played eight quarters of football this season. They’ve gone eight quarters without scoring.
They were understandably upset:

— Hector Diaz (@iamHectorDiaz) September 15, 2017
Hector is correct, that sadness quadruple box doesn’t happen very often. But through two weeks of the NFL season, the Bengals have earned it.
Winner: Memes!
Andy Dalton played a bad game on Thursday night. He was 20-of-35 passing with 224 yards, with no touchdowns. The Bengals offense was just a drag to watch.
Dalton wasn’t happy with the game, and it showed, turning him into our first meme from Thursday Night Football:
