palestinian poets: yahya hassan
yahya hassan was a poet and political activist, a stateless palestinian with a danish passport. he grew up in an abusive household in gellerup parken, a housing project with a large migrant population on the outskirts of aarhus, the second-largest city in denmark. beginning as a teenager he had multiple run-ins with the danish criminal legal system and state institutions. as such he was passionate about criticizing both denmark and his own palestinian community for failing his generation.
his eponymous first collection of poems, published in in 2013 when he was only eighteen years old, sold over 120,000 copies, and he received wide acclaim and frequently performed his work at public readings. but his anger against the way islam was practiced in his own community also had him receiving backlash. you can read more about his life and the way he and his work was received in this lit hub article by jamal mahjoub.
his second poetry collection, yahya hassan 2, was released a few months before his untimely passing at the age of 24, on april 29th, 2020.

Damn. Saw your post about being a minority POC in Denmark and how you've always got confused with Middle Eastern people, Muslims, or... Catholics? Feels like a toil to get through.
Does make me wanna ask about your stance on the "where are you from?" question. I know it's a question with justifiable bad rep, especially when that person does see themselves as part of the local community, their looks be damned. But I also know I would love to ask something like this because I wanna learn about that person's life thoughts and experiences.
If I were to ask you something like this in real life, Pie, how would you wish I would go about my wording? So that the answers elicited from you will be interesting, it will tell me more about you, feel cordial, and make you feel comfortable?
My go-to answer for this question involves taking as long as physically possible to give the person the answer that they want. I know they only ask it because they want to know why I'm brown, so I take forever to actually get there. A very normal outcome is this:
Them: where are you from?
Me: a town about a 15 minute's drive from here
T: where are you originally from?
M: well, I used to live in a different region of the country, I think my accent is mostly gone though
T: before that?
M: before we moved to Denmark then my family lived in England, that's where I was born, but I only lived there for about 3 years
T: where are your parents from?
M: my dad was born and raised in Denmark
T: and your mom?
M: oh, she's Brazilian
They stop asking questions after I finally say my mom's Brazilian lol
Also in regards to religion, most Danes really do not know much about other religions. They know there's Christians and they think there's just protestants and catholics. Most aren't even aware that they're lutherins!! They also know of Muslims and Jews but nothing about the actual religions. I know some Danes know of Ramadan, but that's mostly only if they have an Islamic classmate.
Growing up, I was constantly asked "why aren't you getting confirmed?" so I'd have to explain that I'm not a protestant or a catholic. They'd always get surprised and insist there's only two types of Christians and I'd said there's tens of thousands of denominations. At that point, they get confused and bored and give up before I can do my spiel about my very tiny denomination

Saudi Arabia strongly condemns desecration of Holy Quran in Denmark
A man reciting the Holy Quran as others gather to have their iftar meal on the first day of Ramadan at Prince Turki bin Abdullah mosque in Riyadh on June 29, 2014. — Reuters Saudi Arabia on Sunday strongly condemned the abhorrent act of the desecration of the Holy Quran during the holy month of Ramadan by an extremist group in Denmark in front of the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen. Quote
Danish spring eats my whole soul with sunny days and cherry blossoms Flirting with the longing of hot summer nights where everybody is in love where we forget all the bad politics, It is the season where you bathe your hair in oils, turmeric face masks, And cumin in salads, The season where Ramadan is A love poem Danish Ramadan heals my soul With spring rain and full moons Where sacrificing the body is the least One can do for the afterworld's beauty For the Most Merciful Creator Riding on the bike through Copenhagen Like a local Like I am more than an immigrant with eyes on my mouth, they will ask me if I need saving But do they not know that we will never be thankful until our Palestine is returned to us Until we can break the fast with a Palestinian date without feeling the pain in its sweetness Until my Afghans can fall asleep in silk, And eat Kabuli Pulao in Kabul without dreaming of Europe Until we can pronounce the name of these countries Without agony? Danish Ramadan in the spring, at the local bazaar looking for the fruitful watermelon, Looking for my mother’s eyes, Asking for the red lentils, Wondering how did I became a woman? When I am not even the half of my mother’s sacrifices I would never sell my hunger for this city, but sometimes I wonder what would feel like to take everything without asking Without considering my heritage, Without considering their values? What about my values? Danish Ramadan, I fall in love with the man of my dreams, Holding hands in the moonlight, Driving all over Nørrebro, at night it feels like we are in our homeland, like a palm tree might grow out of peace here Where the night is the most you get out of your day Where the old uncles are drinking Turkish tea, and asking you to recite your favorite prayer And you will always recite the most love-full prayer, the one where The Creator is introduced as Ar-Rahmanul Rahim Danish spring with moody weather, Like women who are exempted from fasting, eating cake in the brightness of the day That put more salt in their men’s food out of love, out of mercy Breaking the fast at sunset while your wife’s eyes shine brighter than the sunrise And we meet again at Fajr, where we slow-dance in our Abayas and you ask me if I will be this gentle for the rest of our lives? There is so much fever in the world, but this Holy Month reminds us of my Lord’s promises and I promise my husband that indeed I will be gentle for the rest of our lives

Growing up means growing resentful of Halloween's invasion of my culture and trampling of my native traditions. Why did I see Halloween stuff at Flying Tiger two days ago??? 1) it's not even September, 2) IT'S DENMARK, HALLOWEEN IS AN ANGLO HOLIDAY. THE STORES DON'T EVEN CELEBRATE RAMADAN EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE LIKE A 5% MUSLIM POPULATION, WHY DO THEY CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN. I HAVE MET 3 AMERICAN RESIDENTS IN MY 24 YEARS OF LIVING HERE AND ONE OF THEM IS MY OWN DAD. I HAVE NEVER MET A BRIT WHO RESIDED HERE.
Can't use my cobweb tote in October because people will think I'm celebrating Halloween like some kind of anglo. I'm not! The only spooky/supernatural/costume-y holidays I observe are Fastelavn, Sankthans, Allehelgen, and the spooky days of Christmas.
