#243.? - “Raging Bolt” is an enigmatic Pokemon theorized by leading researchers to either be an ancient precursor of Raikou or even a parallel version of Raikou from another timeline; however, the true origin of this Pokemon remains unknown. A wild and powerful creature, Raging Bolt is said to incinerate everything around it by cloaking the skies with dark clouds before employing its elongated neck to deliver devastating lightning strikes upon its targets. If certain researchers are to be believed, it is possible that over a long period of time, Raging Bolt evolved as a species to become the smaller and more nimble Raikou that is known as Legend in modern times. As the species develops a shorter neck and tighter gait, they become faster and more physical powerful with the trade-off of less-intense lightning and other special attacks. Their mere roar splits the air like crashing thunder.
Named: “Raging Bolt” - - ? - - Raikou

hello ninjago fandom, i know i said that i'd post about how to play hide and seek with an oni, but i'm afraid i got brainrot for the subject of today's post.
so, for today's traditional oni lore, i'll be telling you all about the two oni gods, Raijin and Fūjin!!
Raijin and Fūjin are potentially the first two oni ever created, as they were born from the corpse of Izanami, the goddess of death, who created oni. (you can learn more about her here) They escaped Yomi when Izanagi (Izanami's husband) escaped after finding Izanami's corpse.
Fūjin was the God of Wind. He is traditionally described as having green skin and red hair, and wearing a leopard or tiger loincloth. On his shoulder he carries a large bag full of winds, called '風袋' or 'Kazebuko'. He has also been referred to as Fūten. He is often depicted beside his twin brother, Raijin.
Raijin was the God of Thunder, Lightning, and Storms. Unlike Fūjin, he doesn't seem to have a particular physical appearance. He is occasionally depicted with paper white skin or red skin, depending on the artist, though even these depictions seem to agree that he has black hair. He is often depicted surrounded by taiko drums or den den daiko drums, which have tomoe symbols on them. It is said that when he beats them, it creates thunder. Raijin is also often said to have three fingers, each representing the past, present, and future. He is also referred to as 'Raiden-Sama', 'Kaminari-Sama', 'Narukami', 'Raikou', and 'Kamowakeikazuchi-no-kami'.
Raijin had a son, too, called Raitaro. Raitaro, unlike his father and uncle, he seemed to look fully human, but he does have a legend surrounding him. He too is a god of thunder, and he lived in a grand palace in the clouds with his father, Raijin. Raijin loved Raitaro deeply. The two would often pass the time by looking down at humanity, and Raitaro especially enjoyed watching the children and their parents. One day, Raijin asked Raitaro to look well upon the land. Raitaro saw noble lords and their armies fighting over land, and then a beautiful princess, priests in their temples, and finally a poor farming couple who were childless.
Raijin then asked Raitaro to choose where he would like to inhabit the earth. Raitaro chose the farmers, much to his father's pride. That day at noon, a grand thunderstorm rolled in to the farmers, Bimbo's, land. Bimbo sang Raijin's praises, delighted at the rain that would save his crops after the long drought they had just suffered. The sky was alive with booms of thunder and the spark of lightning. It struck the ground, frighteningly near the peasant. At this, the poor farmer cowered and prayed: "Kwannon have mercy on a sinful soul, for now the Thunder Dragon has me indeed" (Kwannon was the goddess of mercy)
The lightning didn't harm him, it seemed, instead a small baby laid where the lightning had struck; this was Raitaro. Bimbo took Raitaro home to his wife, and the skies cleared and the sun shone brightly upon the drenched land. Bimbo and his wife took Raitaro in as their own son, and he was said to be the happiest and tallest boy in the land. He worked the rice fields at a mere ten years old, with all the ability of a grown man, and he was amazing at predicting the weather, which made Bimbo's crops flourish.
Eventually, Raitaro's eighteenth birthday came, and all were celebrating, except for Raitaro. When Bimbo's wife asked why he was so forlorn, Raitaro explained that he had to go home, back to the heavens and his father. Bimbo and his wife were distraught, but Raitaro explained to them that they had taught him how to suffer, to labour, and to love, and that he was now more learned that the other gods. Raitaro returned to Raiden, who received his beloved son with great joy. Bimbo and his wife were comforted by the fact that soon they would be with Raitaro again, in the heavens above.
Raijin did not only have a mother, brother, and a son, but he had pets, too. Raiju, meaning thunder beast/animal, were most commonly depicted as white blue dogs or wolves, wrapped in lightning. They could also come in other forms, such as leopards, foxes, weasels, panthers, cats, tigers, ferrets, and tanukis, but again, the wolf and dog forms are the most popular. Usually, Raiju were calm beasts, but they'd become aggressive and agitated during thunderstorms. They tend to leap around in trees, fields, and even buildings, leaving lightning strikes as they go. Some Raiju tend to sleep in human navels, which causes Raijin to strike the Raiju with lightning in order to wake it up, unfortunately killing the human it was sleeping in. As a result, it's a common superstition to hide your navel when it's thundering in Japan.
I think that Raijin and Fujin are so cool 😭😭 even if Fujin has basically no content compared to his twin :(
Raitaro and Raijin remind me of Lloyd and Garmadon in their particular myth,, they're so cute
i also LOVE raiju. storm wolves??? hell yeah. garmadon you can have a pet wolf raiju after the merge. as a treat.
i can also see the ninja being more than mildly terrified when wu very cryptically tells them 'if you hear thunder, hide your navels.'
other oni lore
what repels oni, how oni were created, oni and cannibalism, kijin/source oni, traditional oni weapons, traditional oni stories, oni gods of thunder and wind
feel free to leave any questions in my ask box!!

9 Fandom Peeps to Get to Know Better
Tagged by @olyollyoxenfree! Thanks for the tag!
3 Ships I Like: I guess I'll pick the last 3 I've been thinking about. Satoru/Iroha from Wonderful Precure they are soooo sweet together and I can't believe they're canon 😭
Because of the 3Z Ginpachi-sensei anime coming up, there's been an influx of new merch, and the 2025 calendar gave my rare pair some crumbs, so I've been back on my HijiShin business for a hot second.
Since the second season came out, I'm watching 4Kota, so back to the LanTris mines that only consist of 4 teenagers and me, I guess.
First Ship Ever: I've been shipping for so long, even before I even knew what shipping was. I think my earliest ship is from Pokemon, maybe Kenta/Marina from the Raikou Legend of Thunder special, but I'm going to give a shout out to my OTP that consumed me the most in my preteen years, Yusuke/Botan from Yu Yu Hakusho.
Last Song You Heard: Today's Idolish7 Heardle, (SPOILER) Sogo's birthday song Crescendo.
Favorite Childhood Book: I'm pretty sure I didn't read this as a child, maybe a teen, but Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech. I always pull this title out when asked what my favorite book is, but it's been a billion years since I've read it.
Currently Reading: Unfortunately I don't really read books anymore, and I'm not actually a fan of manga unless I have to. Does reading someone's translations of the Ginpachi sensei 3Z novels count?
Currently Watching: I have some baking videos by Hidamari Cooking on youtube as background noise right now, but I was watching 4Kota season 2 earlier
Currently Consuming: Nothing, I had dinner a while ago, a hamburg bento from work.
Currently Craving: Something sweet. Specifically a biscuit cookie with a thin layer of chocolate.
I tag… uhhhh grabbing the latest few moots on my activies @moondove330, @featherlystar @beaubambabey @lyraeon @seaprincessminami @pollyannaisms @i-want-the-rock-i-need-the-rock @dryicecubes

Welcome back to my series discussing the real-life inspirations for all legendary and mythical Pokémon. Today I’ll be covering gen II. For previous entries see gen I, all starters, all fish, and all non-fish aquatics.
The legendary beasts were a first in in the series for being legendary Pokémon that are actually the subject of legend. They were three Pokémon who were killed in the brass tower burned down, but were then resurrected by Ho-Oh. Each one represents one of the events involved in the burning of the tower. I personally like the theory that they were the gen I eeveeloutions before being revived. While the beasts are very cool, I don’t know if I can forgive them for introducing the roaming legendaries mechanic to the game. I’m going to hold off on covering the paradox beasts for now because I haven’t decided if I’m going to cover the paradox Pokémon at all and we haven’t seen paradox Entei yet.
Raikou is electric type and represents the lightning that struck the brass tower and started the fire. It’s also definitely the least utilized of the beasts. Entei gets a movie and Suicune gets to be a cover legendary but poor Raikou gets left behind. Anyway, it’s based on the raijū, a creature from Shinto mythology. The Raijū is the companion of Raijin, the god of thunderstorms. It is normally calm and peaceful, but during storms it will fly around as a ball of lightning and its roars sound like thunder. It is normally depicted as a dog or wolf, but can also be depicted as a huge variety of animals and mythical creatures. That’s pretty much a dead ringer for Raikou, but there’s still more. Raikou may also draw form the Nue, a chimera from Japanese mythology that is usually described as at least part tiger and can transform into a cloud and go flying around. In terms of real-life inspirations, Raikou is also based on Smilodon, the most famous genus of saber-toothed cats. These are commonly called saber-toothed tigers, which fits with Raikou being yellow (which is kind of like orange) with black stripes. Raikou’s shiny also makes it look more tiger-like.
Tumblr media
(image: a depiction of a raijū as an abstract beast not clearly resembling any real animal. The source given fro this image was Ban Koko's Kanda-Jihitsu but when I looked that up the only references I could find to that work were the citations attached to this image)
Tumblr media
(image: paleoart of a Smilodon depicting it as a large, thick-bodied cat with a short tail, brownish coat covered in spots, and protruding fangs from its mouth. Source)
Entei is fire type and represents the fire that burned down the brass tower. It looks like a combination short-muzzled dog and big cat and is based heavily on Barong, a heroic panther spirit from Balinese mythology. Barong is the leader of the forces of good who battles the demon queen Rangda in a struggle between good and evil. Entei’s shagginess around the head and neck resembles a lion’s mane and lions are associated with strength in many cultures. There is also a connection between lions and fire as in alchemy, a lion is used as a symbol representing the sun. Dogs also feature in Entei’s character design, especially saint bernards, who are large, strong, and shaggy dogs with shorter muzzles. Entei’s design is meant to look like an erupting volcano, with its fur being the base of the volcano, the plates on its back being rock broken open, the smoke emerging from its back being smoke, and its red and yellow facial markings being lava.
Tumblr media
(image: a Balinese statue or effigy of Barong, depicting it as a large quadruped covered in shaggy fur with a cat-like face and decorated with a crown and jewlery)
Suicune is water type and represents the rain that extinguished the brass tower’s fire. It’s the hardest one to pin down a relationship to a real animal, but the designer said it was designed with leopards in mind. The leopard design plus Suicune’s connection to the north wind references Fūjin, the Shinto god of the wind, who wears a leopard skin. Fūjin and Raijin are commonly seen together, giving a close relationship between Suicune and Raikou. Suicune’s mane looks like an aurora and its ribbon-like tails move in a way that seems like waves or gusts of wind. Mythologically, Suicune draws from the qilin, a mythical Chinese creature. Descriptions of the qilin vary, but they are always depicted as ungulates (hooved animals) and in many stories can walk on top of water like Suicune. Chinese qilins are usually depicted as draconic and may have one or two horns. Suicune splits the difference by having two horns that fuse together. The Japanese version of the qilin, the kirin, is usually depicted as more deer-like, which more closely fits the clearly mammalian Suicune.
Tumblr media
(image: a stature of a qilin at the Summer Palace in Beijing. It depicted as a quadruped with a horde-like body plan and hooves, but reptilian scales. its head looks cat-like, with a beard, long barbels from the snout, and small antlers)
The tower duo started the trend of having version-exclusive legendaries on the box art of the games. Despite this, legendarries being important to the plot wasn’t a thing until gen III, therefore the tower duo don’t have as much attention and lore as the box art legendaries that would follow. In theory they are both birds and their name comes from how they used to roost on top of the bell tower and brass tower until the brass tower burned down, causing them to leave. They are also both related to a legendary trio, with Ho-Oh being the creator of the legendary beasts and Lugia being made into a mediator for the legendary birds by the 2nd movie.
Lugia is one of the most iconic legendary Pokémon as well as one of the weirdest. It is really hard to pin down what this thing is supposed to be. Lugia is the guardian of the sea and is associated with storms and the color silver. While it normally lives underwater, Lugia can breathe air as and fly. It is notoriously classified as a flying type and not a water type. Lugia really should be water/flying instead of psychic/flying. Lugia was designed for the 2nd movie and the designer was surprised to find out it got added to the games as well. What exactly Lugia is is a hard question to answer. It looks a bit like a short-necked plesiosaur or a penguin, which fits it being aquatic. Its name and color might come from beluga whales. Another possible source is Bahamut, a gigantic, monstrous fish from pre-Islamic Arabian mythology that was one of multiple creatures that carried around the world. An older name for Bahamut is Lutīyā, which certainly sounds like Lugia. Lugia looks vaguely draconic and may be based on Ryūjin, the Shinto sea god who was a dragon that lived at the bottom of the sea.
Tumblr media
(image: the painting Princess Tamatori Steals Ryujin's Jewels by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Ryujin is depicted as a serpentine, wingless dragon emerging from a wave)
Together with Ho-Oh, Lugia represent duality, which is frequently symbolized as a dragon and a phoenix. The dragon represents masculinity and yang while the phoenix represents femininity and yin.
As mentioned above, the theme of duality represented by the dragon and the phoenix inspired the tower duo. Lugia is the dragon while Ho-Oh is the phoenix. Or rather, it is the fenghuang, the immortal bird of Chinese legend that often gets translated to English as “phoenix”. The Japanese name for the fenghuang is hōō, which is pronounced the same as Ho-Oh. Both are said to have many colored feathers like Ho-Oh. While the fenghuang is sometimes associated with fire, the fire and immortality aspect of Ho-Oh seem to come from the western phoenix, famous for rising from its own ashes after death. Ho-Oh likely does this too as the Sacred Ashes item is apparently Ho-Oh’s ashes and can restore your party members from fainting. Pheonixes are often used to symbolize immortality and rebirth, which fits with Ho-Oh raising the legendary beasts from the dead. Other possible inspirations include the Slavic firebird or the three-legged crow.
Tumblr media
(image: a statue of a fenghuang from Nanning, China. It depicts a perched bird with a long neck and head crest pointing backwards. Its tail is that of a peacock's)
If Celebi had debuted after gen 6, it definitely would have been a fairy type because it is heavily based on fairies, nature spirits, and other mythical creatures. Celebi is based on nature spirits like the Greek dryads and Japanese kodama, but primarily the idea of kami. In the Japanese religion of Shinto, every object has an associated spirit or god called a kami that embodies that object. Celebi being a forest spirit and being found in a Shinto shrine clearly indicates that it is a kami if the forest, presumably Ilex Forest as that’s where its shrine is found. Celebi’s time traveling ability is likely a refence to fairy stores where someone will visit the land of the fairies for a little while, only to find out that years if not decades or centuries have passed in the brief time they were there. Or they may spend years there to find only minutes have passed back on Earth. Celebi’s physical appearance is a fairy mixed with a plant bulb. It’s worth noting that Celebi’s beta design clearly drew form Kokopelli,a god of trickery, fertility, and music worshipped amongst some Native American tribes of the southwest US. A depiction of Kokopelli has become a common symbol in the southwest US.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(images: left: three beta sprites for Celebi, with the first being an all-black silhouette of a cartoonish humanoid blowing a flute with long appeandages emerging from the back of the head, the second being a similar creature with short limbs and no flute now colored mostly orange, and the third being almost identical to the finished Celebi design. Right: the common modern depiction of Kokopelli, an all-black humanoid silhouette blowing a flute with multiple appeandages emerging from the back of the head.)

Fiore Folklore and Spirituality: Part 1- Legendary Beasts
Ok so before I can explain the thing with eevees, I need to start with the legendary beasts. I'm not an anthropologist, historian, or folklorist, so this is based on what I remember from school, and picked up living in Fiore all my life.
So in Fiore, like in nearby(ish) Johto, the primary pokemon worshiped have been the legendary beasts: Raikou, Entei and Suicune. And "worshiped" is definitely the correct word. There is a massive and elaborate temple dedicated to these three pokemon. It's somewhat defunct now, but the belief has far from died out.
Some people still outright worship these three pokemon in a way similar to deities. While the temple is no longer in regular use, people have at-home shrines, often featuring an item representing each pokemon (e.g. a candle, a cup of water, and a piece of metal; or volcanic rock, pearl, and fulgurite).
Some accept them as simply rare and powerful pokemon. Not holy, but worthy of respect/reverence.
And of course, there are people who don't believe in legendaries at all.
Even for people who don't literally believe in the legendary beasts, it's baked into the culture. A lot of swearing and oaths are based on Entei, Raikou and Suicune. As is common in many regions (e.g. Galar and Kanto) the triad of fire-water-electricity is a common motif: in fairy tales, in character trios in fiction, in counting rhymes and simple games. There is a weather phenomenon of loud winds that people call "Suicune's howling". Ball lightning (which is yet to have one distinct cause/scientific explanation) is traditionally attributed to Raikou.
Folklorically, the three beasts are associated with disasters, their origin legend being that they were pokemon resurrected by Ho-oh after a brass tower was hit by lightning, caught fire, and was put out by rain. In Fiore (and I'm sure elsewhere) Entei is associated with volcanic eruptions primarily, but has gained an association with wildfires as well. Raikou is naturally linked to thunder/lightning, and Suicune with flooding, rainstorms, and windstorms.
While "disasters" has a certainly negative connotation, that's not the attitude I've observed from believers. Much as the legendary beasts themselves were reborn from disaster, there's often a narrative or motif about life emerging from these wild natural phenomena.
I could be projecting, but it's something I see as very much fitting the ranger ethos, and it makes me wonder if worship of the legendary beasts culturally is part of what helped the Ranger Union get such a strong foothold here. A good ranger knows that wildfires are good for the health of the forest, that lightning helps make fertile soil (it's part of the nitrogen cycle!), that the floodplain is an important part of the ecosystem of a river. Whether at the spiritual or literal level, the goal is always to understand and live in balance with this phenomena.

Fictional character crushes I had while growing up Part 1
These are the lists of character crushes I had while growing up and explanation:
Tumblr media
Shou from Pretty rhythm aurora dream and dear my future
Shou, I had a crush on him in the first pretty rhythm series before the sequel and I like him because he likes a girl who does things unexpectantly even though he has a short temper, that is his flaw. He's also a great fashion designer of Prism Stone because his design outfits for girls are unique and trendy to wear.
Tumblr media
Syaoran Li from Cardcaptor Sakura
Syaoran Li was more of a tsunder character type but he was shy and mellowed down to be kinder which I love about him even though he was jerk to Sakura at the beginning, I did grow to love when he becomes kind to Sakura which change him every time she does something to him and cause him to blush.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tsubasa Li and Syaoran Li from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle
Syaoran Li reminds me from Cardcaptor Sakura only this time he's kinder, brave, and cares about other people minus the tsundere. While Tsusbasa Li is the same as Li Syaoran but the only difference is he can't protect those he cares about like his parents or his clones, but he still had Syaroan Li's personality minus the tsundere.
Tom MCcavity from Olivia series
I had a crush on Tom Mccavity because he was a jockster and is an optimist and always care for his friends which is why I like him.
Tumblr media
Luke Triton from Professor Layton
The moment I saw Luke Triton in the Katrielle Layton anime series that he grows up into an adult, I fell in love with him because of his looks and has grown from his childhood days with Professor Layton being mature and more gentlemen like.
Tumblr media
Jimmy/Kenta from Pokémon Legend of Thunder
Jimmy or Kenta I had a crush on him because he was a Pokemon trainer who wanted to help his hometown but he also helped a legendary Pokemon called Raikou which I like about him. He had a personality that is good because he wanted to help people and Pokemon, a bit like Ash but not a chosen one way.
Tumblr media
Ash Ketchum/Satoshi from Pokémon
I had a crush on Ash Ketchum during the advanced generation because he is brave, kind, selfless, determined, optimistic, and naïve but when it came to the black and white series he was a laughing stock and more like he forgot things he went through all his journey. Satoshi from XYZ what made me like him more and he was great. But as I grew up I loathe him and admire him now. I loathe him because he could not win a single Pokémon league and I admire him because he was kind to his friends and Pokémon as well as determined to win.  But after finding out he won a Pokemon league, I admired him, and my crush for him hadn't grown much except it was gone when I grew older.
Tumblr media
Peeta Mellark from Hunger Games
I had a crush on Peeta Mellark because of Katniss telling the readers she was in love with him making me fall in love with him as well but in a crushy way. Peeta is kind, likeable, charming, generous, selfless because of love, peaceful, gentle, good sense of humour, emotional as he can cry and has a temper. Peeta is sadly taken and married and wish I had a date with him and marry him off as well but he is meant to be with Katniss.
Tumblr media
Sekai Kamiki from Gundam Build Fighter Try
I had a crush on Sekai Kamiki because of his fiery temper to compete in the gundam competition and the fact that he is in a love triangle between two characters from the show that has feelings towards him. Yeah he is new to gundam, but he learns how to build one and make one of his own making him interesting.
Tumblr media
Dillon from Power Ranger RPM
I had a crush on Dillon because he was a mysterious guy who has a past that he couldn't remember and the fact that he is a cool brooding ranger making him an interesting power ranger. Also, the fact that he helps his fellow rangers even if he doesn't know his past, he will still help which is why I like him. Dillon is sadly taken by Summer the yellow ranger.
Tumblr media
Phill Diffy from Phill of the future
I had a crush on Phill because of his interest in past technology as well as how past of the modern world works but he's such a dork that I love him, though I admit he is taken as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Danny Fenton from Danny Phantom
Danny he is a typical teenager who is a hero who saves the world by stopping ghosts coming from other world and transferring them back to the ghost world, yes he's a stoner who wants to become an astronaut but I like the fact that he takes cares of his friends and family. I had a crush on him on how he treats family and friends and he's good with them.
Tumblr media
Kashino Makoto from Yumeiro Patissiere
I don't know why I end up having crushes on Tsunderes but damn Kashino was a fine guy even when he was a tsundere towards Ichigo which is why I had a crush on him because he is willing to help people who want to learn how to make cakes and have the same dream as him which is to become a patisseiere. Plus I like the fact that he was a blushing mess towards Ichigo which is why I had a crush on him. Kashino is taken and is married towards Ichigo so my dream of having him is zero.
Tumblr media
Eugeo from Sword Art Online Alicization
Eugeo, oh I had a crush on him because of his kind personality and the fact that he was the best boy who is calm and collective and not ahead of himself which is why I love him.
Tumblr media
Kirito/Kazuto Kirigaya from Sword Art Online
Kirito from SAO I had a crush on him because of how he is kind, yet a crybaby but still thinks of loved ones even when they're in danger, he would help them and try to get them to safely as possible. Kirito is taken as well because he's with Asuna who can cook.
Tumblr media
Watase Aoba from Buddy Complex
Aoba, he was stupid sometimes but heroic nonetheless and always seem to be positive even when something happened to him that seems dangerous he would always head on be courageous which I is why I had a crush on him. Okay besides his good looks his personality wise was the best though he is with Hinata at the end of the show which I wish I could have him but he's taken.
Tumblr media
Brandon Robert from Dork Diaries
I had a crush on Brandon because he was kind, didn't care about the popularity and always like photography taking pictures for the journalism and even musically talent.
Tumblr media
Kakeru Kogure from Onegai my melody
Okay Kakeru I can explain, he is cocky and teases but he learns his mistake and tries to be friendly towards girls and nice to them and treat them gifts even though he was a bully. I had a crush on him because he was kinder and learn from his mistakes.
Tumblr media
Luke Smith from The Sarah Jane Adventures
Luke, i had a crush on him not only based on his looks but his personality where he is intelligent, smart, helpful, supportive towards his friends and family and never fears his fears which is why I like him. But then I found out on an article he is gay, so that's over and done with.
Tumblr media
Terry McGinnis from Batman Beyond
I got a crush on Terry because he was a loner and he's always stopping the bad guys in gothan city and I was attracted him because he was mysterious and a bad boy I guess. I even like when he wore the bat suit, but damn he was good looking.

All about yokai: The Raijuu
When picking a yokai to feature in my stories, there are a few ways I go about it. For the raijuu it came via a legend, which in turn inspired the story The Cry of the Raijuu. The legend tells of the samurai Tachibana Dōsetsu who was sheltering under a tree during a storm. As lightning struck, he drew his sword to stop it, and once the smoke had cleared all that was left lay a dead raijuu. From then on he renamed his sword, Chidori, Raikiri which means “lightning cutter”. When I first read this, I loved it so much and wanted to write it badly. I didn’t want to go from the samurai’s perspective though, I wanted another view, of someone seeing such a great feat. And from this I needed to do a lot of research in both Tachibana Dōsetsu and the raijuu.
So how did I pick my raijuu? First I looked into the most basic information I could find about the lightning beast.
Raijū
雷獣 - らいじゅう
Translation: Thunder beast I chose the spelling raijuu over raiju or raijū for two reasons. Firstly I was unsure how many people would understand the ū sound, as it’s not used in English. In Japanese it’s in place of an uu (and similarly the ō is in place of ou). I could have gone with the simpler raiju, however I’d love if people could pronounce the name as close to the japanese way, so I chose the full version raijuu.
Next I had to pick what type of animal the raijuu was. It is an embodiment of lightning in an animal form, though they have been likened to wolves, dogs, tanuki, and many other animals including even crustaceans. Other sources spoke of a white and blue wolf or dog wrapped in lightning, with a cry sounding like thunder.
Tumblr media
The Raijū as depicted in Ban Kōkē's Kanda-Jihitsu. I also looked in one of my favourite books Yokai by Koichi Yumoto and found this picture too.
Tumblr media
From Kaiki Denshōzushi by Motoyama Keisen, as seen in the book Yokai.
Deeper research led me also to popular culture and how they approached the raijuu or raijuu inspired creatures and that made me think of two things from my childhood (and adulthood in case of pokemon!). The pokemon Raikou and the digimon Garurumon.
Tumblr media
Raikou’s design includes a purple cloud-like mane, and it’s an electric type.
Tumblr media
Garurumon is not electric but does have the white and blue wolf shape.
Taking inspiration from it all, I ended up with my raijuu, a white wolf wrapped in blue lightning with black metallic claws which runs along the sky. I decided it can manipulate lightning, run with it, and it is drawn to the metallic nature of the claws. I imagined it’s fur to be coarse and rough, because if it was soft, the static would send mess with the fur. Beneath a coarse layer of fur would be a fluffier layer for warmth, as being high in the sky must be cold. Overall I thought it would be similar to a husky.
For the raijuu’s behaviour, I looked at my research again. It spoke of raijuu leaping around when agitated and striking trees, or creating mayhem wherever they landed. This feared creature comes across as very temperamental and uncontrollable, which fits their master well, Raijin. Raijin, the god of thunder and lightning owns raijuu as pets, and is said to awaken them during thunderstorms.
This leads to a wonderful piece of information I found and desperately wanted to add into my story, but unfortunately I couldn’t do it. Japanese superstition talks of raijuu burrowing into humans’ belly buttons to sleep or hide. And when they are woken up by Raijin, they can hurt the person, so during storms you should sleep on your stomach and/or cover your belly button when you hear thunder.
These feared creatures were quite the mystery to Japanese people, and as they could easily cause much destruction, I made sure to try and convey all that during my story. It was also said that whenever lightning struck, it was believed that a raijuu had been sent by the gods to punish them for some reason.
My poor protagonist ended up with the short straw really, as he wasn’t being punished for anything, he really didn’t do anything wrong. However he battled each challenge well, and Inari was watching with very curious eyes. She isn’t done with him yet.

#fanartfriday #raikoulegendofthunder #pokemonchronicles #copicmarkers #pokemonjohto #junichipokemon #kentapokemon #marinapokemon #questshipping #backshipping #pokemongoldsilver #pokemoncrystal With the news of Ash Ketchum retiring from Pokemon, I remembered I used to want a Pokemon series with these three characters from the Raikou Legend of Thunder special. Junichi/Jackson/Vincent, Kenta/Gold/Yoshie/Jimmy/Ethan, and Marina/Dani/Kris. There was quite a few dubbing name inconsistancies throughout the anime. During my teenage years, the male characters were on my "husbando" list. https://www.instagram.com/p/CmzWvqwP-gI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The first one is Hun, from the Raikou movie The Legend of Thunder. In English, Hun is never referred to with any pronouns specific to them (only ever referred to in groups like 'those guys'), and in multiple languages Hun is referred to its somewhat random whether Hun is referred to with he or she pronouns.
