An Unexpected Valentine
Book: Open Heart (Book 2)
Pairing: Rafael Aveiro x F!MC (Carrie Valentine)
Featuring: Bryce Lahela, "Vovo" Aveiro
Rating: Teen
Category: Fluff
Summary: It's Raf and Carrie's first Valentine's Day together, and he has planned a perfect day for them, but nothing ever goes according to plan. But by the end of the day, Raf is sure of one thing, it's the perfect Valentine's Day, and he has the only Valentine he'll ever need.
Words: 2067
A/N: This one is going out to @twinkleallnight, who requested a fic for her favorite, Rafael. I hope I did it justice for you. And a special thank you to the lovely @missameliep for helping me with the Brazillian cultural references. You are a gem, and we're all lucky to have you in the fandom! Participating in @choices-february2023 Day 14 Valentine's Day
It was Valentine’s Day morning at Edenbrook Hospital, and every nook and cranny seemed to be adorned in pink and red. Balloons, streamers, flowers, cupcakes … even the staff’s attire seemed to be prescribed by Cupid himself. The HR Department had a long-standing joke that making it impossible to forget the day was an employee benefit, leading to happy partners throughout Boston. Just one more service they offered to the community!
But one employee needed no reminder. Rafael Aveiro had been meticulously planning this day from the moment he told Carrie Valentine those three little words, and then she said them back. He was a romantic at heart, so he would have made a fuss over Valentine’s Day even if it wasn’t named after his girlfriend. Carrie always laughed and explained that wasn’t how the holiday got its name, but Raf refused to accept it. A celebration of love for all? Of course. But for him, the day was dedicated to his Carrie; now, it was his favorite holiday of all.
He had worked the overnight shift and was getting ready to leave Edenbrook, knowing Carrie would arrive shortly after he left. While he couldn’t be there to greet her, a bouquet of red roses and a box filled with chocolate-covered strawberries would. Later, he arranged for lunch to be delivered from her favorite bistro in Back Bay. Then tonight, he would pick her up at seven, and the real celebration would begin.
His excitement morphed into an ever-present smile on his face. Nothing was bringing him down today. The hospital’s gift shop was opening as he passed by, and he couldn’t resist slipping to buy one more thing. A small, pink teddy bear for Carrie was under one arm, and a bouquet of flowers for Vovo was under the other when he heard a familiar voice beckoning from behind.
“Awww, Raf… you shouldn’t have! I told you, darling. You’re all the gift I need!”
Raf could feel the megawatt smile before he saw it.
“Then you’ll be delighted to know they’re not for you, Bryce.”
Bryce gasped and grabbed his chest in mock horror. “Now my day is ruined! But,” he continued, admiring the gifts in Raf’s hands, “at least you’re taking care of Carrie, so you’re off the hook.”
“Well, one is for Carrie, and the other is for my Vovo.”
“Ah, so you’ll have two happy ladies today! What are your plans tonight? Anything big?”
“I’m taking Carrie to Oliveira’s Steakhouse for dinner, Café Brazil for dessert, and then dancing at this little club I found on Tremont.”
“Nice! Is it a surprise?”
“Mmmm, I have surprises planned for her during the night, but she knows what we’re doing. You know Carrie, she doesn’t like big surprises.”
“Well, it sounds like a great. I suppose me third wheeling is out of the question.”
“Any other night, I’d be happy to have you join us, but tonight, it’s our first Valentine’s Day, and this is all about Carrie and me… so….”
“I was only teasing,” Bryce grinned, “but now you have to take me next week!”
Raf laughed heartily as he walked away. “That’s a deal!”
~~~~~
The door of Raf’s car was already open when his phone rang, and the grin on his face left no doubt as to who was calling.
“Happy Valentine’s day, meu amor!”
“Raf!” Carrie gushed. “I can’t believe you did all this!”
“I didn’t do enough. You like?”
“I love! Everything is beautiful, and right now, I’m the envy of everyone on the 9th floor!”
“I’m the only one they should be jealous of… because I have you.”
“Raf… I adore you! This Valentine’s Day is already better than all twenty-six I had before combined, and I haven’t even seen you yet!”
“We’ll fix that tonight.”
“I can’t wait! I’m dying for you to see the dress I bought!”
“Not as much as I’m dying to see it,” he assured as Carrie giggled.
“We’re staying at your place after our date, right? Will your roommate be home?”
“No. He will be with his girlfriend in Somerville, so it’s just you and me.”
“Good,” Carrie purred. “Then I can’t wait until you see what's under my dress, too.”
“Carrie, I’m about to go into my Vovo’s house… could we, uh, maybe save this conversation for later.”
“Sure! I don’t want Vovo seeing you in… that… condition!” She laughed, “But as much as I’m looking forward to the after-party, I can’t wait for our date!”
“You do love Oliveira’s….”
“I do!” she enthused. “But I love everything you planned, and I just want to be all around Boston with you on my arm. Nothing means more to me. I can’t wait for seven o’clock!”
“Neither can I, meu amor.”
Raf jumped out of the car as soon as he hung up. As much as he wanted to get to his apartment and sleep, he had one more stop to make. He barely stepped onto Vovo’s driveway when he heard Roberto Carlos's tunes blasting… even with the doors and windows closed. Once inside, he had to chuckle, seeing his grandmother singing Chegaste, the perfect duet.
“Vovo,” Raf smiled, “Jennifer Lopez is nothing compared to you!” Pulling the flowers out from behind his back, he wrapped his grandmother in a tight hug. “Feliz Dia dos Namorados, Vovo.”
“Ai meu anjo!” She cried. “You are so good to me!”
“I learned that from you because you’re so good to me.”
“And this year…you’re so happy, meu filho. No?”
The grin on his face answered for him, but he still replied. “I really am.”
“Good! Then you should eat! Come to the kitchen! I’ll feed you.”
“You would have fed me if I said I wasn’t happy, too,” he smiled.
“Of course!” Vovo insisted. “I would have fed you more!”
Exhausted, Raf hadn’t noticed the pleasant aroma that filled the home, but once in the kitchen, it was unmistakable.
“Vovo, what are you making? It smells delicious!”
“That’s because it is delicious, Rafa! When have I made you anything you didn’t enjoy?”
“Never!” He lifted the lid off a pot, and his mouth watered. “Is this?”
“Feijoada. But I’m also making steak, arroz e feijoa….”
“Are you having a party I didn’t know of?”
“It is a party. It’s not every day I get to meet the woman my grandson loves!”
Raf coughed on his coffee, and Vovo patted his back to assist him.
“Rafa, esta bem?”
“Yes, it just… went down the wrong way.”
“That’s because you’re tired, me anjo. Go home and get some rest. I’ll make sure everything is perfect for tonight!”
“Vovo… uh… when did I say we were coming here tonight?”
“When you said you were taking Carrie out for the best Brazillian food in Boston! I’m so touched that you want to introduce us on Valentine’s Day. Estou tao animado!”
“Yes… well, it is very exciting, Vovo….” he trailed.
“What time will you be here for dinner?”
“Well… Vovo… actually….” he stammered, looking around the kitchen overflowing with more food than three people could possibly eat, he didn’t have the heart to tell her no. “Uhm, Carrie is working today, so let me check the time with her, and I’ll let you know.”
“Maravilhoso! I am looking forward to it!”
~~~~~
Raf’s mind raced the whole ride home; his heart completely torn. He went to call Bryce for advice, but he remembered he was in surgery all day. All the plans he had meticulously made were unraveling before his eyes. With Carrie so excited, the thought of disappointing her made his stomach churn. He couldn’t let that happen. But Vovo was so happy and working so hard. How could he hurt her? He let out a frustrated sigh as he entered his apartment, plopping down on the couch as soon as he walked in. He was determined to figure something out, but the overnight shift caught up to him, and the only thing that came to him was sleep. Hours later, he woke with a startle when a phone call woke him.
“Oh, shit!” He looked at his watch and panicked. He had less than one hour to get Carrie. Flying into the shower to begin getting ready, he didn’t even recall his dilemma. But on the drive to pick up Carrie, it all came back to him.
This would explain why he found himself standing on the steps to her apartment, sweating, despite the cold temperature. Anxious, even though he had been looking forward to this night for months. And full of dread… because there was no good way to work this out. But when Carrie opened the door, his mind settled for a moment.
He loved Carrie for her heart, but right now, he was reminded that the outside was every bit as beautiful as the inside. Her chestnut brown hair flowed over her delicate shoulders, and her red lips were the same hue as her dress. But it was her eyes that won him over, those big brown eyes that had held him captive from the moment they met. If Rafael Aveiro had any problems at that moment, they were all washed away.
“Wow…” he gasped as he took her hand. “You look…. You look….”
Carrie gently spun around, allowing the red silk skirt to swirl all around her before falling into his arms.
“Please tell me that loss of words is because you’re overwhelmed with joy, not that you hope I’ll be heading back inside to change,” she giggled.
“I wouldn’t allow it!” He grinned, “You are perfection and… wow… you’re my date!”
“All night long,” she beamed…. and with her words, his dilemma came rushing back. There was no hiding it; the worry was etched on his face.
“Raf?” Carrie asked, a worry line forming between her brows. “Did I say something wrong?”
He startled at the concerned expression on her face; he didn’t take months to plan this night for her to look that way.
“No! My love, not at all,” he pulled her into his arms for a warm embrace, “it’s just….”
Carrie pulled back just a bit and stared into his eyes. “Just?”
“I’m afraid I have to start our date by doing something that will break my Vovo’s heart.”
“What?” Carrie asked. “I don’t understand. Does she not want you to be with me?”
“Quite the contrary….”
Raf conveyed the story. Explaining how the confusion began and that he had only learned of the misunderstanding earlier that day. He described Vovo’s kitchen, overflowing with food, and how excited she had been. But, she’d understand, he assured. He’d explain, even at this later hour, that it was a misunderstanding… even though it broke his heart.
When he finished speaking, he found Carrie standing before him, her arms firmly crossed in front of her chest.
“Rafael,” she said sternly. “There is only one way to rectify this situation, and it is not canceling with Vovo; it’s canceling our reservation at Oliveira’s.”
“It… what? But you’ve been looking forward to our date?”
“Of course I do!” she insisted. “But I want the best Brazillian food in Boston, and by your own word, the only place to get that is in your Vovo’s dining room.”
“You mean, you want to go to Vovo’s? For our Valentine's Day date?”
“Raf, I’d be honored… as long as it’s all right with you. I know being introduced to your family is a big deal in your culture, and if you’re not ready to take that step with me, I understand. But otherwise….”
Carrie’s words were stopped, replaced by a little squeal as Raf spun her around in his arms.
“Are you kidding me? I don’t know what I was thinking; this is the perfect Valentine’s Day, after all. You are the love of my life, and it would be my honor to introduce you to my grandmother… on this… the holiday devoted to you.”
“Would you stop?” She laughed, reaching into his pants pocket to pull out his phone. “Then you better call the restaurant… you have a reservation to cancel. And make it quick!”
“Why?”
“Because we have to stop at the bakery. I’m not showing up at your grandmother’s house empty-handed.”
She didn’t get to say another word as Raf’s lips captured hers.
“Happy Valentine's Day, meu amor. The first of many more to come.”

Ever the Worrier (With Good Reason) -- Rafael Aveiro x MC
“Ever the Worrier (With Good Reason)” -- Angst, I think
Rafael Aveiro x f!MC (Rosalie Valentina - I know Raf is Brazilian, but Ro is Mexican and Cuban)
Word count: 2512
Warnings: Mentions of blood, physical trauma, and other medical procedures. Mentions of death but no one dies ________________________________________________________________
Guess who finally wrote a fic again!! I wrote half of this at midnight when my laundry was drying, so it might be kinda clunky. Also I’m a mexican ass mf who loves telenovelas, and this is def a telenovela-y.
In this, Rafael and Rosalie are engaged. Rafael is victim to a freak accident at work and is rushed to the E.R., but Rosalie’s coworkers try and keep her from knowing he’s hurt. Enjoy! ________________________________________________________________ Dr. Rosalie Valentina had just finished up with a patient; a twenty-two-year-old with an epidermoid cyst under her right armpit. An injection of lidocaine, a small incision and some cotton packing later, and she was sent home just fine. It had been a relatively easy day in the hospital--a few broken bones, some lacerations of varying depths, a case of a middle-aged woman coughing up blood. Collecting discharge papers for the twenty-two-year-old from the receptionist desk, Rosalie’s attention was piqued as she heard hustling, yelling, and commotion coming from the ambulance bay. She set the papers down on the desk, hurrying over as she saw multiple doctors and nurses flood the stretcher as it was rolled through the automatic doors.
“How can I help?” Rosalie asked a nurse bustling by. The nurse paused, biting his lip.
“We’re okay. Just tend to your patients, doctor.” He went to move again.
“Wait! Clearly you’re not! You have Dr. Mirani and three residents all crowding around a stretcher. That’s not okay!”
“Just trust me, doctor. It’s okay.” The nurse nodded quickly before hurrying to the stretcher as it was pushed down the linoleum floors. Rosalie tried to see, tried to ask what people needed. She could easily sense Jackie hide the face of the patient on the stretcher, pumping the BVM over their mouth. Rosalie knew she was being pushy, and that she might get reprimanded for not being able to follow instruction, but in the pit of her stomach she felt that something was wrong.
“It was a freak accident. He was helping a car crash victim on the side of the road and a drunk driver side-swiped the two of them. Sent patient flying and killed the original victim on impact. He flew into an old fence on the side of the road and was impaled by an old fence post,” One of the paramedics rambled to Dr. Mirani, who took in all the information with a straight face. The paramedic looked ashy and queasy in shock.
Jackie hunching over the patient’s face wasn’t enough to hide from the thin wooden fence post running through the left side of patient. Despite seeing many things in the E.R., she felt queasy looking at the patient’s blood dried on the post, the coagulation collecting around where wood met torn flesh.
“BP’s 67/46 and dropping!” One of the nurses yelled, and Jackie looked up reflexively. When she looked up, Rosalie saw the face of the unconscious patient on the stretcher. Extreme blood loss couldn’t hide all the warmth of sun-kissed South American skin, and a swollen, beaten and bloody face couldn’t hide the sharpness of cheekbones or gentle curve of his mouth.
Dr. Mirani shouted something about contacting the blood bank upstairs, but half the sentence warbled in her brain and all she could register was a crackling static and blood rushing in her ears. All the blood in Rosalie’s body pooled in her feet, and she felt all the color drain from her face as she got an extreme headrush, one that knocked her unconscious and sent her tumbling to the floor.
“Get Aveiro to O.R. four! Emergency surgical team is already assembled!” ________________________________________________________________ She was in an emergency department patient room, one of the ones with the blue curtains separating the patient from the rest of the floor. But she wasn’t attending to a patient--she was the patient.
The lights of the room had never seemed so blinding to Rosalie before. Her eyes fluttered rapidly, getting adjusted to the light in the room. She looked around--at the ceiling tiles, at the warmed blanket draped over her body, the blood pressure clip on her finger, the IV in the back of her left hand, covered in clear tape. The plastic covering of the IV and the engagement ring on her finger glittered under the fluorescents.
Rosalie went through the events she remembered before her fainting. She remembered multiple doctors crowded around a stretcher rushing in from the ambulance bay, Jackie hunching over the patient’s face, the wooden post sticking out of the patient’s abdomen. And oh God, the patient.
Her favorite superhero, her fiance. Paramedic Rafael Aveiro, lying unconscious on a stretcher with a wooden post jutting up from his abdomen. Suddenly, she felt extremely queasy, and before she realized what was happening, she leaned over the side of the bed and vomited up the small amount of food she had in her stomach. Toast, shitty cafeteria coffee, a banana. And lots of stomach bile. She made a hissing noise, holding the blanket up to her runny nose, her throat and sinuses burning from throwing up.
Upon hearing her vomiting, Sienna pushed the curtain aside, peeking in the room. “Hey, Ro. You’re awake.” She gave a small smile, then looked at the vomit on the floor. “And queasy, I see.”
Rosalie looked Sienna dead in the eye. “Sienna, you’re my best friend. How’s Raf doing?”
Sienna frowned. “Still in surgery. You were only out for a minute or two, but we gave you a sedative to keep you asleep.”
“How long was I asleep for?”
“Two hours.”
“Two hours! Sienna-” Her heart monitor began to beep faster, and Sienna shushed her.
“It was for your own good and you know it, Ro.” Sienna walked toward her and sat on the side of her bed. “I don’t have any word on Rafael yet. But he’s in some of the best hands in the country. The world, even.”
Sienna reached forward and tucked a strand of Rosalie’s hair behind her ear. “We didn’t want you making yourself sick for hours on end,” she paused, looked at the vomit on the floor, and back at Rosalie, “Well, more than you already did.”
Rosalie couldn’t help but crack a tiny smile before her eyes welled up with tears. “I don’t know what I’ll do without him if he dies, Sienna. I think a part of me would die, too.”
Sienna took Rosalie’s right hand in hers--the one without the IV--and rubbed the pad of her thumb comfortingly along the back. “I know it’s scary. But all we can do right now is think good thoughts. Rafael is one of the luckiest men I know with all sorts of good karma. In my heart I know he has one of the highest chances of being okay. He has the best surgical doctors from every applicable department in that OR right now. He’s in the best hands possible.”
It was moments like these Rosalie was infinitely grateful for someone as wonderful as Sienna Trinh in her life. She was the kindest, most genuine person she had the pleasure of meeting, and she didn’t know how she would be able to get through this moment without her.
Sienna’s pager beeped and she hopped off the bed, checking it. “Mirani paged me. I’ll check in on you later and bring you something to eat, too. And I’ll send someone to clean up the mess.” She gave Rosalie a warm smile before disappearing into the organized chaos of the emergency department. Rosalie let her head fall back into the pillows of the hospital bed, tears in her eyes. She did her best to not think about Rafael, but all her mind was doing was replaying the scene over and over in her head where she looked from the wooden post up to Rafael’s unconscious face. The memory made her physically ill, and she had to suppress a gag once more. Subconsciously, she began to twist the engagement ring around her finger. Raf had bought it for her whilst visiting family in Brazil. It was beautiful--a golden band with a round cut black diamond surrounded by two round cut imperial topaz, which was a gemstone native to only a small mine in Minas Gerais. The topaz was when adorned with two small champagne diamonds, creating a formation looking similar to a flower.
Looking up at the ceiling, Rosalie did her best to take her mind of Rafael. She started finding designs in the plaster above, and she ended up drifting off before she knew it. ________________________________________________________________
A gentle hand on Rosalie’s shoulder shook her awake. She hummed her response, trying to force her eyes open, despite her sleepiness. “Hmm?”
“Ro,” Sienna said, softly. “Rafael’s out of surgery. He’s in the ICU, he’s stable. We think he’s going to make it.”
Even half-asleep, Rosalie registered what Sienna was saying and she felt tears well up in her eyes. This time, though, they were tears of joy, not anguish. She hadn’t ever been this happy, this relieved: not when she found out she got into one of the most prestigious medical schools on the East Coast; not when she found out her idol, Dr. Ethan Ramsey, hand-selected her application for a job at Edenbrook; not when she watched Rafael get down on one knee on a cobblestone bridge over the Charles River under the full moon and asked her to marry him. No, she had never been this happy before.
“Can I see him?” Rosalie whispered, looking up at Sienna.
“Technically no,” Sienna grinned. “But you’re a doctor. Maybe you’re just coming with me to help with his evaluation.”
“Sienna Trinh, I do love you.”
“I know, Ro.” She reached forward and took off the blood pressure clip, and peeled the tape off the back of her hand before grabbing gauze and removing her IV, taping a gauze square over the needle site. “I love you, too. He’s in room 408.”
Rosalie all but jumped off the bed, and Sienna stopped her to hand her a brown paper bag, full of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a bottle of water, and a brownie she baked last night. “Please consider walking. And eat on your way, will you?”
“Yes, Dr. Trinh.” Rosalie leaned forward to kiss her best friend’s cheek. She slipped her shoes on, which had been at the end of her bed, and pulled on the sweatshirt of hers Sienna retrieved from her locker. She gave Sienna a brief wave as she stepped out of the room, opening the paper bag to pull out the sandwich, wrapped in wax paper. Sienna liked to minimize her plastic use.
Trying to slink away from the doctors and nurses that would keep her from getting to her fiance faster, Rosalie got to the elevator and pressed the up button. Inside the elevator, watching the red light display each floor number was torture when it felt like they were minutes instead, minutes counting down to her seeing Rafael safe in the hospital bed.
The doors pulled open and she did her best to not speed out of the elevator, walking briskly as she navigated the quiet corridors, counting each room placard aloud to herself before finally getting to 408. Rosalie knocked briefly reflexively before opening the door slowly, cautiously. She peeked her head in first, then slinked the rest of the way in, her heart hurting as she saw Rafael laying on the hospital bed, peacefully asleep. It was eerily quiet, with nothing but the steady beep of the heart monitor and the hum of the machines echoing around the room.
His eyelashes were always so long, brushing his cheekbones under his eyelids. He had a few bruises on his cheek, and a cut held together by two butterfly bandages. A nasal cannula ran from his nose to the flowmeter in the wall. The light blue cotton linens were pulled up to his chest, and someone brought up one of the quilts from the on-call room and laid it atop the blanket, across his legs. His arms were by his sides, miscellaneous tubes sticking from different points within his hands and arms, covered in sticky tapes and wrapped in bandages, an oximeter on his fingertip. She hurried to his bedside, taking his hand gently in hers as tears welled up in her eyes.
“Raf,” She said softly, bringing his hand up to her lips gently as she pressed a kiss to the back of it. “You’re so stupidly brave. I always told you you had to take care of yourself on the job, too. You’re too selfless.” She sniffled, lowering her head and looking at his abdomen. It was covered by linens, but under it, she knew it was covered in bandages and stitches and plastic coverings.
“Sienna said the surgery went well. I know we’re just waiting for you to wake up. Once you wake up, we know you’ll be okay. You gotta do it for me, Rafael. Make it through this and wait on being stupid until we get married at least. Please.” She was half crying, half laughing as she pulled a chair from beside the bedside table, sitting down and resting her head on the bed beside him, still holding his hand.
For someone who had just slept for hours from a sedative, she was still exhausted, and before she knew it, the gentle hospital lullaby of monitors and machines were lulling her into sleep. ________________________________________________________________ When Rosalie woke up, she was surprised to hear the TV on. She blearily blinked the sleep from her eyes, looking up to see the screen on, playing a telenovela she had watched time and time again when she was stuck at home sick. She heard a quiet chuckle, and her head whipped around.
“For someone who was panicking over me, you’d think that when you wake up the first thing you’d look at is me.” Rafael had small, sleepy smile on his face. His eyes were droopy, full of exhaustion. But he was awake.
Rosalie had to keep herself from crying in excitement. “Raf! Oh, gracias a dios,” she took his hand in hers again, squeezing it gently to not irritate the tubing. “How are you feeling? I was so worried!”
He laughed before wincing, clutching his abdomen. Rosalie winced, too. “You sound like my avo. Ever the worrier, Rosalie.”
Rosalie’s jaw dropped. “¡Ni en pedo! Do you even know what happened to you? I was worried sick! Literally sick, Raf--I threw up all over the linoleum in the E.R.”
Rafael rolled his eyes affectionately, snorting. “I do, Ro. Dr. Mirani told me when I first woke up. He was a bit unhappy to see you slumped over my bed when I hadn’t been approved for visitors. He told me that you haven’t left the hospital in over a day. Why didn’t you go home?”
“And leave you here? What kind of fiancée would I be if I did that?”
“One that took care of herself.” He smiled softly. Although his exhaustion was evident, his smile still reached his eyes. It was Rosalie’s favorite smile of his. For someone who was constantly smiling, the gentle smiles that showed in the eyes more than the mouth was her absolute favorite. “I love you, princesa. Thank you for staying with me.”
“I love you too, Rafael. And I would stay in here for the rest of my life if it meant I could make sure you were doing okay.” ________________________________________________________________ Spanish translations: - “Gracias a dios!” -- Thank God - “¡Ni en pedo!” -- essentially “fat chance!” or “there’s no way!”

Alone (2.11 Rewrite)
Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Claire Evans) featuring Rafael Aviero and mentions of Raf x MC
Summary: A rewrite of 2.11
Word Count: 4,291
This whole day had been bad from the start. With what Claire found out was going on between the senator and his assistant Travis. To getting sprayed in with an unknown substance, along with some other people at the hospital who meant a lot to Claire or to people she is close with. Then watching the person she loved the most at the hospital look at her worried. Worried that she might die or that they wasted time because of him being an attending and her being a resident.
Watching Bobby die right in front of her, watching Danny and Travis get wheeled out of the room to different places, watching one of her best friends getting sicker than her and watching him miss his trip to Brazil because he felt the need to protect her was hard and scary. She felt that it was all her fault. Travis even said that it wouldn’t have been this way if she hadn’t stepped in, which she knew he was right.
It was her fault that Bobby’s kids would grow up without their father. It was her fault that Danny’s parents would lose their son. It was her fault that Sienna wouldn’t be able to get together with Danny. It was her fault for letting Rafael jump in and save her. It was her fault that Ethan and the other people in the hospital had to hear and witness this.
Even though Rafael was physically in the room with Claire, she still felt alone and trapped in a bubble. He was progressing at a faster pace than she was and they still had no clue as to what they were sprayed with and if there is even anything that could help them get rid of it. When the rest of the diagnostics team would come in and check up on them, it felt weird and unsettling.
While Claire’s friends and roommates were safely outside the sealed door. It felt that they were millions of miles away and that she was just dreaming that they were there. Ethan tried not to show any emotion around her in fear that it would hurt her to show sadness or worry, but she felt that having a stone expression was way worse. Claire felt that she was in a terrible nightmare that she would never be able to get out of. One that was bad for everyone.
While her friends tried to reassure her, Claire was still worried that they may never figure out what was wrong, especially since Sienna said that Travis had no idea what was in the can and there was no trace of it anywhere, except for inside their bodies. Even when the team came in to give them stuff to alleviate their symptoms, it didn’t help Claire with her worry. Knowing that the FBI was not going to give out any information to the team to help them, Claire kept falling down a worried path in her mind. They only had hours at most to find a cure and with the FBI claiming national security, a petition for them to release it would take weeks.
Claire’s worry only increased as time went on with Bobby already dead, Danny almost on his way there and both her and Rafael’s health declining quickly. With everyone so far, they have nine doctors working on figuring out what the toxin is. They have to cast a wide net of possibilities, which makes the process even longer. Especially since between the FBI and them, they have only ruled out a few different things, including bacterias and viruses.
It has been many hours later and still no idea as to what it could be, even with testing as many vials of blood as both Claire and Rafael could spare. The heart monitor is the only thing Claire was able to use to be able to focus as her vision blurred and the room felt like it was spinning. Rafael letting out a soft moan let Claire know that he was still alive, breathing, and fighting helped to calm her nerves a little bit.
“..Claire? You look terrible right now.”
With his voice barely above a whisper, she was worried about him and how he was feeling. It was hard to see one of her best friends sick with an unknown problem right next to her and knowing that she couldn’t do anything to help it. Especially because at one point, she thought that her and Rafeal could’ve been something more, but they both felt love with someone else.
“Um… rude. I don’t want to hear that when I’m trapped in a room with an unknown fatal disease and surrounded by plastic. It may be honest but it’s not for me right now.” Claire said jokingly.
“Sorry. You look beautiful as always.” It made Claire blush and smile a little bit.
“That’s much better.”
Watching Rafeal get worse and worse is one of the hardest things Claire has experienced so far. As new symptoms came up, her fear increased, mostly for Rafael. Hearing Rafael say that letting the team know about his new symptoms may be able to save her only broke her heart. It felt that her friend was giving up and that he knew that he wasn’t going to make it.
“This is important. I may not make it, but if you track my symptoms, it may-”
“Raf, stop it! Please? I’m mad at you for throwing yourself in front of a hypothetical bullet and risking yourself.”
“But you were in trouble! If I hadn’t done that, I may have forgiven myself.”
“Raf, If you hadn’t done that, I would be in the same position I am in now and you would be safe. You would most likely be on a plane to Brazil right about now.” Claire said while tears streamed down her cheeks.
Raf then gently grabbed her hand and squeezed it as he used his other hand to gently try to wipe her tears.
“You know I care about you a lot, but I have to ask why you keep putting yourself in danger?”
“I honestly don’t know. It feels like it’s my only option when it happens, but now I can’t stop thinking about my vovo.”
His hand slowly starts to lose grip on Claire’s and her tears come back harder than they did before. She encloses his hand with both of hers as she is upset about the current situation.
“Raf, Please stay with me? Please?”
“I think you need to page the team Claire.” Rafael’s voice breaks a few times as he speaks, his heart rate slows down and his breathing shallows.
“I’m so sorry Claire, but this might be the way this ends for me. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you.”
Claire’s blue eyes meet his brown ones. She knows that they are as soft and warm as they were when they met for the first time. She then gently strokes his hair out of his face, feeling the cold sweat in it. Her tears become larger, almost to the point where she can’t see him through them.
“Please Raf. Don’t give up. I know you’ll make it through this. We both will.”
Claire watches him smile for a second and then watches as his eyes flutter closed and how his hand drops away from hers. She then pages the team and both Ethan and June quickly respond and hurry into the room.
“I was hoping the treatment would help buy us some more time.” Ethan said.
“We don’t know that it didn’t already.”
Ethan nods to Claire and both his and June’s eyes fill with sympathy for her.
“We’ll move him to the support suite. We still have a chance to fix this in time to help him, to help the both of you.”
Claire watches as Ethan stares at Rafael. She sees waves of emotion wash over his face. She doesn’t want to ask him but she decides to anyway.
“How is Danny doing?”
Ethan sighs before speaking. “We lost him. He asked to be autopsied before he died so he could help the two of you.”
Claire squeezes her eyes shut tightly. It causes the pressure in her head to be so great that it feels like it wants to explode at any second. She then takes a deep breath and opens her eyes to turn towards Ethan, who is busy prepping to transfer Rafael to the support suite. She then mentioned all of Raf’s symptoms to Ethan and June, which caused June to speak up about something she saw a while ago.
“Come on. We need to follow up on what you’re thinking. If we move fast enough we can help.” Ethan says as he looks down at Rafael.
“Stay strong for us Claire. We’ll come back with more info soon.” June said as she secured the barrier over the bed Rafeal was in.
Both Ethan and June carefully wheeled him out through the decontamination room and down the hallway, leaving Claire fully alone to her own thoughts. She was hoping it wasn’t too late for Rafael. She was also starting to panic. She didn’t tell anyone except for Sienna about her fear of the dark and her fear about rooms closing in on her. It was late at night and she was in a room on the side of the hospital that did not have much light, so it was very dark outside which creeped her out, and the eerie feeling inside of her didn’t help.
Claire started to curl up into a ball on her bed once they left the room. It had been a long while since Claire was in a hospital as a patient, but that was also back home in New York and one of her parents was with her, especially when the doctor or a nurse wasn’t in the room. But now she was in a city that was 6 hours away from home, with an unknown toxin in her body, and no clue if her parents were even outside the door. When Claire would get scared of the dark and feel that the room was closing in on her, her mother would come and try to help her through it.
She felt so alone and isolated in the room. With minimal lighting and plastic surrounding her, she was scared. It was hard to sit on the bed with having a fear that the team may not have an idea of what it could be and that both her and Rafael might die. Claire let more tears fall freely down her face. She hoped that everything will be okay and that they have a shot of staying alive.
She eventually calmed her crying down a bit to straighten her legs and wipe her tears. It quickly built up again as she started to think that all of this is her fault and her fault only. Claire feels that she is the only one to blame for Bobby and Danny’s deaths. Both of their families would blame and hate her for the rest of their lives. That is what her mind was telling her in the somewhat empty and quiet room. She tried to lay down and close her eyes to try and get rid of these thoughts but it didn’t work.
When Claire’s friends and fellow members of the diagnostics team arrived at the window of the room, they looked very upset. It caused Claire to worry a lot because it could have been about what she and Rafael had, or it could’ve been that Raf had died. She was thinking of all the worst possible things to explain to herself as to why they had those looks on their faces.
“So.. How doomed am I?”
“‘Doomed’ isn't the right word I would use Claire. Especially since the hunch I had was right.” June said.
“It is the right word. I can see it written all over your faces. Please just tell me what I have.”
“You have a maitotoxin. It’s one that I’ve never seen before. It was also still active in Danny’s body postmortem, including on his skin. It’s still dangerous.” Ethan spoke up. His expression was flat and kind of hard for Claire to read.
Claire begins to recognize the name and begins looking in her mind for any more information she can find on it.
“Maitotoxin. It’s taken from fish parasites, and there’s no cure for it either. So let it kill me.”
“You're okay with this?” Jackie said.
“What other choice do I have?”
Ethan then looks at Claire with sad eyes. He tries to stay strong for her as she looks at him through the window.
“Now is not the time to give up Evans. With Rafael stepping in, you didn’t get as much of the toxin, so the symptoms you have aren’t as advanced.”
“But there is no cure for it.”
“Yet. We are going to work around the clock to create one.”
“And you won’t be alone.”
Claire turned as much as she could to see Aurora, Tobias, and other doctors from Mass Kenmore approaching the door. She knew that Tobias has a heart somewhat. She also guessed that Aurora was a part of getting them here, which she is very grateful for, even after their argument.
“Tobias?”
“Save it Ramsey. This is bigger than any petty thing that is going on between us or the hospitals. We’re not letting Claire die on our watch.”
“Aurora… I can’t tell you how grateful I am for this.” Claire said as she turned to Aurora.
“So don’t. You can thank me by staying alive.”
“I will do my best.”
“We’ve set up a basecamp at the laboratory. We can lead you there now.” June says as she gets everyone back to focus.
“Count me in on this. Chemistry was my best subject at school.” Elijah said as he and many of the other doctors made it down to the lab.
A few other people still remained at the door including Sienna, who has fierceness in her eyes while many tears make their way down her cheeks. Claire felt bad for saying that she wanted to give up in front of Sienna, especially since one of the people she loved most at the hospital died.
“Don’t you dare die on us Claire. Don’t get into a coma either. Just stay alive. Do you hear me?”
“I hear you Sienna.”
Sienna slowly backs up and Bryce appears at the door next.
“Hey.” Bryce says.
“Hi.”
“Just don’t give up. Please.”
Bryce then backs up and Jackie appears at the door. Claire can see her eyes water as she approaches.
“We don’t need you leaving us. Not yet.”
She then backs up and the three of them wave to Claire before heading to the laboratory. She turns and notices that Ethan is still standing in the hallway. He then slowly approaches the door, similar to how her friends did and gently places his hand on the glass. Claire then held her hand up and placed it on the other side of the glass, directly across from Ethan’s. Her blue eyes then looked straight into his blue ones.
“Are you okay Ethan?”
“No. But you don’t need to hear about it. You need rest. Have you tried to get any sleep?”
“I tried. But with the thought of Bobby and Danny being gone already and wondering if Rafael is alright, or whether he’s already…” Claire couldn’t finish her sentence and it was silent for a few seconds.
“Do you want me to stay with you for a while?”
“They won’t need you?”
“Tobias knows what he is doing. Considering what we know about maitotoxins, Elijah was right about this being a chemistry problem now. This is where I can do my best, as long as you want me here with you.”
Claire thought about it for a second. Maybe having Ethan there to help comfort her would help this feeling of loneliness she has.
“If this is my last night alive. I want to spend it with you here.”
“I would feel the same exact way about you if I was in your position.”
“Really?”
“Yes really Evans.”
Ethan then gently lowered his hand from the glass to go put on one of the suits before entering the room. She then dropped her hand to let Ethan take it and lead her over to the bed. Claire slowly got into the bed and he helped to cover her with a blanket before grabbing a chair and pulling it up right next to her bed.
“Now, I need you to lie down for me. I know it might sound weird but you need to try to relax and think of something happy.”
“I’ve been trying but I feel like there has been so many things that I have done wrong. Like I should have traveled more, I should have hung out with my friends more, I should’ve loved more.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that I have spent most of my life focusing on school and work. I guarded my heart because I was worried that it would break because of the way I do things. I didn’t travel because I wanted to be ahead of my work and feared that if I stopped doing that then I would fall behind. I was scared to meet friends because I wasn’t sure how long I would be in the area.”
Ethan then realized what she meant. He had done the same thing to himself when he was her age. It was mostly because of his family and his pettiness with Tobias but he saw many similarities between what Claire described of herself and what Ethan remembers from his 20’s. Two pairs of blue eyes met each other as they both wished there wasn’t the barrier of plastic between them.
“Since we are sharing our regrets, can I share one of mine?”
“Go ahead.”
Ethan then brought one of his gloved hands to hers and gently wrapped it around hers.
“I wish that I hadn’t pushed you away. I wasted so much time because I kept trying to get away from you. I should have held you every day and told you how much I… How much I care about you.”
“Ethan. You know you mean a lot to me. When we first met, I felt so intimidated by you. Now I feel that I can trust you with anything, no matter what it is about. You are a part of making the doctor who I am today.”
Ethan let out a light sigh as he looked at Claire. “I see a lot of myself in you. I mean it’s not exactly like looking into a mirror, but there are many things. I’m sure you will far surpass me someday.”
Claire gently touches Ethan’s arm as her smile faded. Her smile faded because her skin was only able to touch the plastic suit.
“What’s wrong Claire?”
“It just hit me that Rafael might be the last real human contact I ever get to have that is not through plastic.”
Ethan sighs again and gently joins her on the bed.
“Claire. Look at me please.” he then gently turns to look at his eyes.
“You can’t think like that. You can’t give up.”
“Ok. But I can kiss you… sort of.”
Claire then gently took his gloved hand in hers and gave it a small kiss. He then turned it over and cupped her chin gently. Ethan then used his thumb to stroke her cheek through the suit.
“Claire..”
“Can I speak for a moment?” Claire said which caused Ethan to nod.
“Even though there have been other people in this room. I have never felt more alone in my life today than any other day. It’s also not just about having the toxin either. I felt so alone even when Raf was in here with me. Then when you guys came in and wheeled him away… I felt so scared and alone with my thoughts. I kept thinking how all of this is my fault.”
Ethan looked very upset. “Claire. None of this is your fault. The blame is all put onto Travis.”
“But it is my fault. If I hadn’t stepped in Bobby would be at home with his family, Sienna and Danny would probably be talking each other’s ears off, and Rafael would be in Brazil.”
Ethan noticed more tears start to form and fall from Claire’s eyes. This caused him to wrap his arms around her and gently try to wipe the tears from her face.
“If you hadn't stopped this, Travis and Danny may still have been in the same situation along with the senator. The toxin would’ve also spread through the whole hospital, which would’ve hurt more people. While Rafael didn’t have to step in, he did it to help you. I don’t want you to continue to beat yourself up over this. I know I can’t control what happens but I want to be there and help you through all of this. I want you to tell me if there is anything wrong so I can try and help fix it.”
Neither of them said anything else as they laid there together. Claire’s eyes locked with Ethan’s as she felt sleep trying to slowly approach her. She then snuggled into his arms more.
“I am glad that I at least got to hold you one last time…”
“Claire.. I promise this won’t be the last time.”
Claire slowly fell asleep in Ethan’s arms. Once Ethan felt that she was definitely asleep. Ethan let the tears flow down his face freely. He was scared for her and not just because of the toxin.
When Claire woke up the next morning in pain, Ethan was in the chair next to the bed and immediately moved closer to help her.
“It’s okay Claire. You’ll be okay.”
Not much time passed before the team of doctors appeared outside the door.
“Claire! We did it!” Aurora said.
Claire was only able to see their outlines because her vision was so blurry. It made it hard for her to distinguish everyone.
“What?”
“You have an antidote?” Ethan said.
June and Baz then came into the room. They were coming in and out of focus as they entered. They were exhausted but they also looked hopeful.
“We’ve managed to create a compound that will bind to the maitotoxin and prevent it from attaching to your plasma membranes. It should keep this from progressing further while your body flushes out the rest of the toxin. We didn’t have much time to test it.” Tobias stated.
“What about Raf? He is more sick than I am.”
“We already gave it to him but so far there has been no change. We might be too late for him.” Sienna said.
“But he hasn’t gotten any worse so it has to mean something!” Elijah added.
“Either way this looks like it is the best shot I have.”
“Would you like to do the honors, Ethan?” June says as she gently holds out the injection.
“I would.”
He gently takes it from June as Claire presents her arm to him, barely being able to hold it up. Baz then comes over to help her and hold her arm as Ethan gets the injection ready.
“Ready?”
“It’s now or never. Let’s do this.”
Ethan then smoothly inserts the needle into Claire’s arm and dispenses the serum.
“And now we wait and hope.”
After everyone including Ethan left the room, Claire started to feel a little bit better about the situation. She still felt that it was her fault, but she didn’t show it when June would come in every hour to test her blood or when her friends came up to the window.
Everything slowly started to feel normal again. Her blood pressure stabilized, the nausea receded, and the world came back into a sharper focus. Then Ethan waltzed through the doors without a suit on and a smile on his face.
“Get up.”
“You mean it worked?”
“It did. There’s no trace of it left in your bloodstream, Even if there are still traces of it in the room, we know that we can-”
Claire then ran out of bed and wrapped his arms around him in a big and tight hug.
“What you’re saying is that I’m free to do this?”
“Yes. I am also saying that I am free to do this.”
Ethan then gently took Claire’s chin into his hand and pulled her in for a kiss. He didn’t even bother looking to see if anyone was watching and Claire didn’t stop him. She then felt a tear fall down her face, but she didn’t know who it belonged to. Eventually Claire was able to come out of the room.
Once the elevator opened for her friends. She saw their pale faces that needed very many hours of sleep. They all still greeted her with enough smiles and love to take her breath away.
“We’re so excited to see you outside of the bubble.”
“I agree.”
“We were so scared for you.”
“So was I. Last night was the worst night of my life.”
“Losing Bobby and Danny too.”
“And Raf…”
“Oh stop it. Raf’s in a coma, he’s not dead.”
All of her friends surrounded her and made her very happy. The love they were showing her was more than enough and it made her feel a lot better about this situation. It also made her realize that she had people to lean on and talk to about this. Especially Ethan.
A/n: I decided to stop it there for right now because I don't want to make it too long. But if someone does want me to continue this I can make a part 2/rewrite of 2.12

I don’t know how to flirt
Book/Pairing: Open Heart / Rafael Aveiro x F!MC (Octavia Blake) Word count/Warnings/Rating/Category: 895 / None / T / Fluffy Summary: Octavia doesn't know how to flirt and she doesn't know if Rafael feels the same, so she decides to go with her gut, and surprises herself in the end. If you want to read more of them you can check my Masterlist. 2- This is a submission for @choicesoctoberchallenge Day 18: Flirt 3- English is not my first language. Thank you @theclashofqueens for reviewing it and sorry for taking your time once again. ♥ 4- The characters belong to Pixelberry. / Feedback would be very appreciated.
Rafael was walking Octavia home after their date. It was not a romantic date, even though she wished it were.
They had hung out a few times ever since they met. He introduced her to his friend, a nice guy Raf used to dance with, at a nursing home where they are volunteers. He even introduced her to his grandmother. However, every time they went out, it always ended up on a friendly note. She thought that would change when he taught her a few samba steps. When they got closer. But she couldn’t be more wrong. Or at least, she thought she was fooling herself. She swore to herself he was flirting with her that night, but nothing changed between them after that.
She didn’t know what to think anymore. Maybe he was not interested in her after all.
She surreptitiously looked at and tried to suppress her questioning face.
But, to no avail, he saw it. “What’s on your mind, O?”
She mirrored his movement and put her hands in her coat pockets. “Oh, nothing... Just lost in my thoughts.”
He smiled and bumped her elbow with his own in a joking way, “Come on! I’ve never seen you so quiet.”
She tried to smile back. “Oh, it’s nothing. Don’t worry, I’m just feeling sleepy already, and we have to wake up early tomorrow.”
He was not convinced by her answer at all, she had this frown on her face like she was thinking hard about something. He knew this much about her, but if she didn’t want to tell him the truth he was not going to push it. He thought it was not his place.
They walked in silence for a while until they got in front of her building. She turned and looked at him. “Well, that’s me…”
He felt her uneasiness and touched her arm in a caring way. “O, whatever is on your mind I hope you feel better tomorrow.”
She looked at him with a questioning face.
He said with uncertainty in his voice. “You had that frown on your face like you were really worried about something. Is that something I can help you with?”
She sighed thinking that maybe that was not the right time, but she was tired of not knowing if what she was feeling was real after all. “You know what Raf? You can.”
His eyes widened. “I can? Why didn’t you say something sooner? Please tell me already how I can help you!”
“So…” she didn’t know how to start talking about it, but she needed to get it out of her chest, “maybe I’m crazy, or I’m seeing things, but the thing is, I like you, Raf.”
He smiled. “I like you too, O, you know that!”
“No, I don’t. The thing is I don’t know how to flirt, but I’m interested in you.” She tried to hide the panic in her voice. There, the cat was out of the bag.
He beamed as she had never seen before, she could see a sparkle in his eyes. It was infectious. “Do you mean it, O?”
Her uneasiness had turned into something else she couldn’t explain. “Of course I do! Why would I lie-”
She couldn’t finish what she was about to say because of Raf’s lips on hers. She didn’t even know how it started. She just knew that what she imagined so many times before sleeping was really and finally happening.
The kiss had a hint of shyness at first but it didn’t take long to turn into something passionate. After a while kissing each other, Raf smiled against her lips. “You have no idea how long I waited for this to happen.”
She smiled back. “You mean it?
Raf hugged her peppering kisses on her neck, “Are you kidding? Just since the first time I saw you!”
“No way! I was a mess that day!” She laughed.
“Are you crazy? You were the most beautiful intern I saw.” He kissed her again until they were out of breath.
After trying to catch their breath they looked into each other’s eyes and Raf cupped her face. “So, is this what was worrying you before?”
She blushed. “Yes, this whole time I was going crazy without knowing if I was seeing or imagining things and you were only interested in being friends.”
He kissed the tip of her nose. “And if I say to you that I was feeling the same way? Every time we went out together I wanted to let it all out and kiss you, but I didn’t want to screw things over between us and be the guy who doesn’t respect women and would be hitting on you even if you weren’t interested at all.”
“See? As I said, I don’t know how to flirt! If I knew, you wouldn’t have doubted that of course, I am crushing on you.”
They laughed together.
“So, do you wanna come in?” Octavia asked, pointing to the elevator.
“Are you sure? I don’t want to overstep.”
“No way, I really don’t want to let you go back now, I want to enjoy this tonight.” She smiled and kissed him.
“Ok, if you insist.”
They put their arms around each other and caught the elevator to her dorm, where they enjoyed the first time the date ended how they expected.

Nightmares
Pairings: Rafael Aveiro x F!OC (Jennifer Daniels)
Word count: 2.4k
Summary: In the wake of the Senator attack, Rafael is coming to terms with what he went through
Rating: Teen
Category: Angst, Fluff
Warnings: mentions of PTSD, references to chapter 11 of book 2
Daylight was peeking through the curtains but Rafael had been awake for hours. Every time he shut his eyes, he was transported back into that hospital room, the sounds of the monitor beeping and the distressed looks of his friends and colleagues staring at him through the window.
He hadn’t slept properly since that night, constantly tossing and turning in his bed with great difficulty due to the stiffness of his muscles, another side effect of the maitotoxin.
He wished he would just get better, that he wouldn’t have to take this long road to recovery.
With a big sigh, Rafael sat up and got out of bed, it took him much longer than normal but it took him even longer to get dressed. He grabbed the frame in the corner of his room and slowly made his way into the living room.
His Vovo had left a plate of food on the counter with a note saying she had gone out for the day. Rafael smiled softly as he took the plate, she always made the best food.
He sat down on the sofa, the silence bugging him. He was never one for quiet, he always liked being around noise, the silence was not something he was used to.
Coming from a big family meant there was always a big family meal and the chance to catch up with each other. They had arranged that soon, for now, Rafael was being given space in order to come to terms with what he went through.
He decided to turn on the TV, flicking through the channels, not paying attention to what was on. He settled on a news channel, the local Boston news scrolling along the bottom.
It’s all your fault Rafael.
He turned around, but there was no one there. He was certain he heard a voice.
You weak, pathetic man.
He heard the voice again but there was no one in the room. Rafael grabbed the remote, turning the volume up to max, the sound echoing off the speakers at an alarming pitch.
It won’t work Rafael. You don’t deserve anything.
The loud noise from the TV did nothing to drown out the voice. He could still hear it, tormenting him with its snide comments.
He put his hands over his ears, trying to see if he could block out the voice even further.
You pathetic little boy. You don’t deserve to live.
The loud banging of the front door averted his gaze. Rafael muted the TV and got up to open the door.
“Bloody hell Raf when’s the rave?” Lucas, his neighbour asked. “I could hear the music all the way down the street.”
“Ah sorry mate. I was… I was just testing the new speakers. I ordered them before… well you know what.” Rafael shrugged.
“No worries mate. I thought you were hosting a recovery party! When you’re feeling up to it we’ll go out sometime, but no rush.” Lucas smiled.
“Sounds good.” Rafael smiled back. He said goodbye to his neighbour and closed the door, leaning against it with a heavy sigh.
You don’t deserve to live your life. You let two men die, two brave men who deserve more than you.
“No… I did everything I could. I know it wasn’t enough I’m sorry.” Rafael cried, putting his hands over his ears.
You should’ve acted like a man! You’re nothing but a coward!
Rafael sunk to the floor in tears. Each sob was louder than the last, tears rolling thick and fast down his face. The voice was still talking to him, tormenting him with nasty words.
He got up and ran to the bathroom, turning on the shower and putting on the hot setting. He took his clothes off and opened the door to the shower, shutting it tightly.
He covered his ears again, hoping that the noise of the shower would block out the voice even more. So far he couldn’t hear anything, only the loud noise of the shower above him.
Rafael slowly uncovered his ears. The voice had gone, disappeared even. It wouldn’t torment him. He turned off the shower and dried himself off before heading back to bed.
He looked at his phone, the picture of the most important person in his life smiling up at him. He smiled at the photo, it was one she had sent him the other day before succumbing to sleep.
By the time Rafael woke up it was dark outside, the moonlight shining brightly through the window. The clock on his bedside read 1:34am. He sighed heavily as he laid on his back.
He thought about calling Jennifer, she was an avid night owl despite being what time it was. He grabbed his phone and found her name in his contacts. He hovered over her name before pressing dial. It rang for a few seconds before she picked up.
“I knew you’d be awake.” The voice he loved hearing so much chuckled.
“Same goes for you. I’m not disturbing you am I?”
“No I couldn’t sleep. I was thinking about you. I miss you.” Jennifer said.
“I miss you too. I wish you were here.”
“I do too. This long distance shit sucks. How are you doing?”
“To be honest I’m struggling. I keep hearing voices, they’re tormenting me, telling me I don’t deserve to live. That I should’ve died instead of Danny and Bobby.” Rafael said, fighting to hold back tears.
He could see Jennifer’s heart break as he spoke. “When did this start?”
“Yesterday. It kept telling me how I was weak and pathetic, how I should’ve died.”
“You know that’s not true don’t you? You know you are the most strong and courageous person I’ve ever met. What happened that day was a tragedy and it is not your fault.” Jennifer said.
“I do. But it’s hard. Some days I believe it and others I don’t. I feel so helpless sometimes, like I should be doing more.” Rafael sighed.
“Do you want me to come visit you?” Jennifer asked.
Rafael hesitated. He needed her more than anything. But she was 3 hours away. He couldn’t possibly ask her to come all the way here.
“No. It’s too far away. Come and visit when we originally planned.” Rafael replied.
“You need me Raf. Now more than ever. I’ll be there soon.” Jennifer said, she got up out of the bed.
“Jen it’s fine honestly.”
“I don’t care. I want to be with you. The roads will be quiet at this time. I’ll be there in no time.” Jennifer gave him a small smile.
“Jen…”
“Yeah?”
He wanted to say those three words, they were on the tip of his tongue. The more he spoke and spent time with her, the harder he was falling. He would say them soon, when the time was right.
“Drive safe.” Rafael smiled.
“I will.” She smiled back.
The call ended and Rafael went into the living room and sat by the window, waiting for her arrival.
He saw various cars in the distance, little balls of light moving down the road but he didn’t recognise the car she was driving. He felt bad for bringing her here, for dragging her out of her bed late at night. Even though she insisted on coming, there was a constant feeling that he was being a nuisance.
You are a nuisance Rafael. She doesn’t really want to be here. She’s being nice for your sake.
“No stop! Stop you’re lying.” Rafael cried, covering his ears.
I never lie Rafael. Everyone else is lying to you. You are not worthy of anything.
“You’re not right. Everyone has been so kind. Everyone is still grateful that I’m here.”
They’re lying to you. You deserve to be six foot under. The way Danny and Bobby are.
“No! NO!” Rafael said standing up and rushing out the front door.
Just as he looked up he saw Jennifer’s car pulling up towards the side of the sidewalk. He rushed over to her, pulling her out of the drivers seat and pulling her into a big hug, as if holding her would melt all his troubles away.
He couldn’t fight back the tears he had desperately been holding in, he sobbed into her shoulder as she held him up.
“It’s okay, it’s okay I’ve got you.” Jen soothed as she rubbed his back.
“I’m so sorry.” Rafael sobbed.
“What are you apologising for? You’ve done nothing wrong!” Jennifer made him look at her, cupping his face in her hands.
“It’s all my fault. Everything’s my fault.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I couldn’t save them. It’s my fault they’re dead!”
It suddenly clicked for Jennifer. He was blaming himself for Bobby and Danny’s death. He was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
“Oh Raf it isn’t. I promise you no one blames you for what happened. Come inside and we can talk about it.” Jennifer held out a hand.
“A-are you sure? Are you sure people don’t hate me?” Rafael asked.
“Do you trust me?” Jen said. He nodded. “You are entirely blameless in this. Nothing that happened that night was your fault. You were so brave with what you faced. And I’m really glad you’re still here. And I know so many other people are. Talk to me Raf, let me in.”
He took her hand and led her inside and to his room, pulling her down onto the bed.
“I’m glad you’re here with me.” Raf said quietly.
“Me too.” Jennifer smiled as she held him in her arms. “Open up to me Raf. I want to know what’s going on. Tell me about this voice.”
“It keeps talking to me. Telling me that I don’t deserve to live, that I should’ve died that night. Bobby and Danny should be here and I shouldn’t.”
Jennifer tightened her arms around him, running a gentle hand through his hair. “Every time I think of that night I think of you, terrified for your life. I’m so glad you and Vic got through it. We wouldn’t have found each other otherwise.”
Rafael chuckled a little. “At least something good came out of all of this.”
“And not just us. I knew Vic would get Ethan eventually. She talked about him all the time.”
“They are perfect for each other. And I’m inclined to say we are too.” Rafael smiled.
“I have to agree. Will you promise me something?”
“What is it?”
“Will you talk to someone about what you’ve been through? I know it’s tough at first, but opening up really helps you understand how you’re feeling. When I lost my Mom, I was recommended a therapist. She really helped me process her illness and how to cope afterwards.”
“Okay. I’ll do that. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that in the first place.” Rafael replied.
“Don’t worry about it. This can be the start of you trying to move forward. And I’ll be with you every step of the way.”
“I don’t deserve you.” Rafael sighed.
“You deserve everything and more. I am so proud of you. Now let’s get some sleep.”
Rafael cuddled up to her, sighing happily as Jennifer ran a gentle hand through his hair. In her arms he felt safe and warm, like she was his light in a world of darkness.
As long as she was by his side, he could get through this.
They walked hand in hand towards the therapists office in the hospital, Jennifer squeezing his hand to bring him comfort. The closer they got to the room, the more nervous Rafael became.
“Do you want me to come in with you?” Jennifer asked.
“I’ll be okay on my own.” Rafael smiled.
“Alright. I’ll be outside waiting for you, good luck.” Jennifer smiled as she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
Rafael took a deep breath before he headed into the office.
“Hi Rafael, take a seat.” Lucy, the hospital therapist smiled at him.
“Hi Lucy, thank you for seeing me.”
“No problem. Now I know what happened in this hospital a few weeks ago but I want to hear it from you. Can you talk me through that night?”
“It still seems like a blur. I tried to stop him but it all happened to fast, the next thing I know I’m lying on a hospital bed, struggling to breathe. There’s a heart rate monitor next to me and the entire world is swimming.”
“And what had happened?” Lucy asked.
“The toxin had taken over my body, I was fighting to stay alive. And I did. I fought like hell and won.” Rafael said.
“That’s why you’re here today. What about after the attack? How have you been coping?”
Rafael took a deep breath. “Not good. I’m having frequent nightmares about the attack, reliving them every moment. And then there’s this voice, tormenting me, telling me that I don’t deserve to live, that I’m weak and pathetic, that I should’ve done more.”
“Does this voice sound familiar? Was it someone you knew?” Lucy asked.
“No, it just kept tormenting me, wishing I was dead.” Rafael said.
“The main thing to remember is that opening up is the first step. Telling me what you’ve been going through has allowed you to be honest. How much more do you feel comfortable sharing?”
For the next half an hour, Rafael opened up even more, from his early days as an EMT to his new relationship with Jennifer. He was surprised at how honest with himself he was being, how he wanted to get better for the sake of his family and friends. When he finished his session and scheduled another one for next week, he headed out the room.
“How was it?” Jennifer asked as she stood up.
“Really good. I’m glad I went. Thank you for the recommendation.” Rafael smiled as he took her hand.
“If you listen to me more often this relationship will always be happy.” Jennifer smirked as they walked out the hospital.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Rafael chuckled. “Fancy some lunch?”
“Lead the way.” Jennifer smiled as she pressed a kiss to his cheek.
For weeks, Rafael’s world had been full of darkness, voices torturing him at night with hurtful words. But having Jennifer in his life brought colour back into his world. After the attack, he didn’t know what direction his life would go in, he was struggling in silence. He didn’t know how to reach out. But now he was getting the help he needed and someone was going to be with him all the way through it.
He may still have some nightmares but with Jennifer by his side, he could cope with anything.
I teased this ages ago and I finally finished it! I hope you like it!

Angst Prompts
That I may or may not use in future fics
1. “Come on, say something. Please, just say something, anything.” A’s voice broke, “Just fight back, I’m begging you.”
2. “I love you,” A pleaded.
B lowered their head, disappointed by the reality of it all, “No you don’t.”
3. “Don’t make this harder than it already is.”
4. “Stay, please.” A begged.
B’s face turned up in a sad smile, “Where else would I go?”
Those words rang in A’s head all night, those 5 little words comforted them. But when they woke up the next day, those same 5 words were only a reminder of all the lies B told.
5. “Did you ever love me? Or were you just lying to us both?”
6. “When were you going to tell me? Or were you planning on lying to my face for the rest of your life?”
7. “You caused this pain, all of this is your fault, and you didn’t have a single clue.”
8. “What happened to forever?”
9. “I didn’t mean the things I said”
“Then you wouldn’t have said them”
10. “I thought we meant something--I thought I meant something to you.”
11. “I hope you don’t regret me.”
“How could I?” B’s eyes were filled to the brim with tears, “You were the best thing that ever happened to me.”
12. “I was worried.”
“You don’t get to be worried, not after what you did to me.”
13. “I want to be happy but I don’t think I deserve it.”
14. “Stay, please. Just for tonight.”
15. “For once, just tell me the truth!”
16. “I don’t want to lose you.”
“You already have."
17. “When did you stop loving me?”
18. “Stop looking at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like you still give a damn about me.”
19. “You deserve better.” “But I want you.”
20. “You were everything to me, but I meant nothing to you.”
21. “Sorry doesn’t fix anything.”
22. “I can’t keep pretending to be something I’m not.”
23. “I can’t do this anymore.”
24. “We were never going to last, our due date is long past expired.”
25. B stood there in the silence, covered in blood that wasn’t theirs, as they watched the nurses wheel a lifeless A away, and for a second, nothing in the world mattered anymore.

Waves of sadness
Pairing: Bryce Lahela x F!MC (Klaw Craig)
Word count: ~2.7 k
Category: Angst
Warning: Language
A.N: This is actually my first Bryce fic that I write, thanks to the comeback of @blazerina who inspired me. Anyways here I’ve described Bryce’s feelings about Klaw despite knowing she has feelings for someone else, but who? I’ve tried my best tho… and please forgive me if I didn’t portray him as you may have wished.❤️
—————————————————————————————————
Seashore.
It reminded him of his home.
Where he felt his confidence higher than everyone else. Where he could forget all of his worries that were past the walls of his house that he hated so much. Where for once he could feel as himself. Acing the grades and keeping to himself the most beautiful ladies with his devastatingly handsome features. Everyone envied him and wanted to be like him in everything he did or say. He smiled sadly to that idiocy of copying someone else and swapping in his body. Truth to be told it was a reckless move and a wrong idolatry. He was considered as the only guy in his neighbourhood who didn’t have any other thoughts rather than being perfect.
Unbeknownst to his friends circle Bryce Lahela had a weakness that was growing slowly and painfully inside of him that brushed it off with his infamous megawatt smile.
A woman.
Who’s close to him but in the same time far away from his reach.
It’s like she had imprisoned him in a cage that he couldn’t find the key to escape. It haunted him every single night while drifting to sleep or when he was with another woman in his bed. This pain was constantly reminding him that things were going out of his control and he needed to find a way to fix it.
While his eyes are glued in an undefined spot in the sea, he was playing the little memories in his head that he always kept them safe like the pearl in its shell.
She clearly is a hard working woman. Every single day that passes she gets more and more recognisable by attendees and he is proud for her because he is in the same shoes and he knows what is that feeling. They both understand each other so well. He jokes to her when he remembers the first time they’ve met in the supply closet. She will always slap his arm and hide her face from blushing that he adores so much. He is rendered speechless countless of times when she would drink without even blinking many shots of tequila as a water. And not getting drunk after that. Well aren’t you something Craig? He admitted to himself. When they say ‘good night’ before separating to their streets and he receives that contagious smile of hers and right in that moment he wants nothing more than to pull his lips into hers.
Or how they’ve exchanged looks in the halls of hospital but always interrupted by a certain attending that everyone including him despised so much.
Ethan Ramsey.
Bryce couldn’t understand how strong Klaw was to keep up with the grumpy doctor who had terrified almost ten generations of doctors in his hands and yet she was still standing tall. Not that it was a problem, but he got a strange feeling every time they worked together. She was always busy especially with the Diagnostics competition and they hadn’t a little free time to spend together. He could spent with their other friends but not with her. Sometimes he had tried to talk to her by going to Dr. Ramsey’s office to give them both a minute much to the latter’s disapproval as if he was cutting off something important.
Even her closeness with another guy had raised to him many questions.
Rafael Aveiro.
It was without a doubt that the newest guy in their group had a crush on her- but did she? Whenever he would caught them laughing together for unspecific reasons he had felt a tightness in his chest like something that belonged to him was slowly falling from his hands. Bryce couldn’t call Rafael a bad guy or not a charming one despite his timidity character but when it was about Klaw Craig- he had to think every obstacle in front of him.
Jackie Varma was the first person who warned Bryce that he had to be careful of what he chose. She had seen his behavioural change since Klaw appeared in the closet room right after their sex. The playful glint that was obvious in his eyes once, was turned into affection and she was afraid of the consequences that would come after that, knowing fully well these two fools (as she called them). Even though it wasn’t her job to intrude into their lives, she felt as a friend to somehow fix this complicated thing that was going on, hopefully not ending in hurt.
Another scene that he played was of his latest conversation with her. Face to face. Nothing hiding anymore. As the sky was starting to get haze he closed his eyes this time for good.
“Bryce, I need to tell you something.” Her face remained passive and blank. This was the right time for her to tell him the truth. The harsh and the worst one.
“Go on.”
When she saw his wide smile she asked herself that how was he going to cope with it. Despite his high confidence especially in operations, Klaw knew damn well that he had a sensitive side and the mere thought of it would break his heart. Nonetheless her voice remained again court and distant, something that he noticed. “You’re a nice guy and I’m really but really lucky to have known you all this time.”
His heart was starting to beat fast and he was pleading that it wasn’t what he was thinking about.
Please Klaw don’t say it.
“Wait,” he asked with a mock confusion. “Are you leaving?”
“No.” That was a relief on his shoulders but that was only momentarily. “I don’t want to exceed my words unnecessarily so I’m going to be straightforward with you. Probably you’re going to hate me after this but I hate lying to you.”
Hate lying to me? It seems like you’ve enjoyed it.
“I know your intentions Bryce. You want me more than a friend,” the tension between them was hanging in the air as each second passed and they could understand it with their fixed gazes. “But I’m afraid that I can’t be more than that.”
Bryce felt a gulp on his throat and clenched fists while digging his nails in his palms. He wanted to be more serious and to solve this diplomatically but his mouth opened before his brain told him not to.
“Who is he?” He heard himself ask. Maybe it wasn’t the right question but he needed to know. How, when and where had she met him? And most importantly… his identity. He knew she wasn’t into women and that was undoubtedly something not new.
Her lips parted in shock and furrowed her eyebrows trying to find better words and to not end this conversation in a war. She didn’t want to hurt him but with that he hurt her.
“What I’m trying to say is-”
“Save it,” he gives up because he knows that he can’t handle it but in the same time he wanted to know it. God he thought everything was too much to him. “You don’t have anything to explain to me.”
“Yes I have to! Don’t you dare skip it because I know you need it!” She shouted and thankfully there was no one in the beach to hear them because it was well past midnight.
“No,” he waved his hand and his voice was much louder now. “I don’t need any details from your special boyfriend who makes you clearly happier than me!”
Her eyes were welling and her heart wrenched at his words that hit her so hard while seeing him in that state. And not long after that she heard his humourless laugh that made her even more concerned.
“When I first saw you I thought we could be a power couple. A couple everyone would be envied of. I would never hurt you Klaw and I would always make you happy. Whatever you wanted I would make that wish coming true. I wanted to take things slow with you… whenever you were ready to take the next step.”
That’s when Klaw understood that she didn’t deserve him. This sweet, generous and golden heart guy that would take any risk for her. But she didn’t forget a sad thing after those words.
“You said the same thing to Rachel and let me rephrase that: ‘We’ll take things easy and slowly my sugar just not to upset you’ and she said ‘Okay’. But what happened the other day? Huh? You fucked her brains out Bryce and you broke the promise!”
“That was different…”
“Is this your excuse for all of this? Please save it because you know it’s not different from the other girls you’ve been with and I-”
“It is fucking different! It is damn different because it’s you who makes it!”
“What?”
“Klaw you’re…” he sighed exasperatedly. “You’re different and everytime I am around you… you make me feel a different person. When I’m around you I’m not the Bryce Lahela or the Scalpel Jockey that everyone knows. I’m just Bryce but only with your voice when you call me.”
“Bryce…” she whispered while the tears were continuing to roll down on her cheeks.
“See?” He pointed with his finger to her lips. “That voice. Do you know what that sweet voice does to me?” Then whispered softly. “It makes me weak.”
Her lower lip trembled while clasping her fingers together not knowing what else to add up. Everything that he confessed to her came from such purity and honesty that he was only able to show. She looked up to the sky as if searching for the last help and finally she collected herself.
“I wish I could feel the same about you Bryce but… in front of me I can only see my best friend. I won’t apologise because we both know that this relationship didn’t even start. We’ll still remain friends right?”
“If you tell me the reason why or more specifically the person behind this… we can still be friends.” He said without blinking.
Her shoulders slumped in defeat. “Wasn’t this all convincing enough for you?”
“No,” he added in determination. “Because I want to know what that guy had more than me!”
She narrowed her eyes and warned. “Bryce watch out your words.”
“Or what? Are you going to call him and say ‘Honey, Bryce is harassing me please help me?’”
“Bryce stop it!”
“Then why goddamn it?” He reached forward and shook her shoulders while digging his fingers. “WHY?”
“Because I’m in love with him!” She grasped out of his hands and took a step back.
The last line hit like a brick in his head and he wanted nothing more than to throw it somewhere far away. Bryce Lahela didn’t know how to move a muscle in that moment because that confession was beyond his expectations. How in the hell did she fall in love? Wasn’t she the one who told her friends that love at first sight is nothing? That love and relationship wasn’t in her cards right now as she wanted to focus solely on her job? His face was showing mortification and defeat now knowing that the pearl wasn’t in the shell anymore. It was stolen by an unknown bandit.
“You should accept even rejections Bryce. Not every girl you face is going to stay with you. But,” she inched carefully closer. “I believe with all of my heart that you’re going to find your half who’s going to be much better than me.”
No one is going to be better than you Klaw. No one.
Whoever the woman was going to be in his arms in the future, she should be thankful. Even though he didn’t admit it now, he would do it later, Klaw thought. That she wasn’t the woman that he wanted to be with.
“Good night Bryce.”
When he opened his eyes rain was dropping rapidly and his clothes got wet.
Frustratingly he started to unbutton his shirt and his trousers and tossed them carelessly in the sand. He was running towards the sea without thinking twice until his body was dived into the depths of Nahant Bay. Every time he lifted his head above water her face would appear again; her laughs, her tears literally every thought of hers was distracting him.
And he did a mistake.
He turned accidentally his head to the wrong side and a big wave engulfed him inside of the water. At the moment his body was aching and everything was getting blurred. That was it he thought. Maybe he would have the same fate as many lovers who jumped in the ocean to leave forever the sad reality they had to face. As his breathing was nearly stopping, his quick instincts of a surfer came back reminding the rules he learnt when he was a kid. He pushed his legs and arms while fighting with the fast stream that wasn’t letting to get on the surface.
C’mon Bryce do it again. It’s not the first time.
Another attempted move and luckily the cold wind hit his face and if his ears heard well a voice called behind him in the shore.
“Bryce!”
While his eyes were spotting a figure he wiggled his earlobes and heard himself ask. “Is that Raf?”
“Bryce, get the hella out of there!”
Bryce made an affirmation sign and swam until he reached the top.
If someone would’ve told that Rafael Aveiro had gone pale no one would believe it. Not even Bryce and for instance he would’ve shrieked in laughter.
“Are you nuts or what? What were you doing out there? You got me freaking scared and I couldn’t call anyone because my battery ran out!And thanks to my fractured leg I couldn’t even swim.”
“Don’t worry about me. Look?” He motioned to himself. “I’m here and most importantly, how did you find me? Or let me guess,” he let out a snort. “Did your girlfriend tell you?”
“My girlfriend?” Rafael furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.
“Stop acting with me Raf. We both know that Klaw sent you here to check out for me.”
“I really wished it was true but I’m afraid it’s not.” Bryce blinked twice in a stunned expression. “I’m not her boyfriend Bryce and… I’ll never be.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like you my friend I was let’s say,” he tried to find the right words while letting a sad smile across his face. “Rejected. Apparently she has feelings for another man. You wanna know what I thought?” Bryce gave him a nod. “I thought you were her boyfriend. I mean seeing you two seemed like you were born to be together because you know each other so well and have such a good chemistry y’know… it made me realise that I don’t have a place in her heart. Especially after her introduction with my grandma…” he let out a chuckle. “Dude I thought that we were really deeply connected with each other like… something was linked to us. But what’s that saying? Good things must come to an end.”
Bryce locked his eyes thoughtfully again to the sea while listening to Rafael. “Whoever he is let’s just hope that he doesn’t break her heart.”
I’ll kill him if it’s necessary.
But Bryce knew it and couldn’t tell his friend about it. Not now. After listening to his confession he couldn’t help but feel bad about him. Just like he said in the first time Klaw Craig was full of surprises and now he realised she was very and madly in love with him. Maybe it was late to figure out but somehow it was better than never.
“I feel you man and I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For lashing you out before and for keeping a distance with you because I was jealous. And honestly?” He huffed. “I’m still jealous.”
Rafael sighed in understanding. “It’s quite normal Bryce. It happens to everyone of us but you should put this behind and take some days off. Trust me, it works.”
“I’ll keep in mind, thanks.” He patted on his shoulder with small smile while his friend did the same back.
“Anytime, Bryce. Anytime.”

one last goodbye {Open Heart}
pairing: Rafael Aveiro/ MC (Grace Sullivan)
word count: 765
rating: General Audiences
author’s note: this is inspired by this confession ; i wanted to write the goodbye scene between Rafael and Grace in book two, chapter 10 with Grace actually being honest about how she still had feelings for him.
synopsis: Rafael was about to say his goodbye to her, and Grace was running out of time.
tagging: @choicesficwriterscreations and @robintora
The busy atrium of the hospital was most definitely not the right place for this. But Rafael was about to say his goodbye to her, and Grace was running out of time. One option was of course to simply not say anything, hug him goodbye, wish him the best and move on with her life as he was with his. Grace had debated with her own thoughts for hours the night before; Rafael was leaving no matter what. She didn’t believe for one minute anything she could say would change his mind. He was also in a relationship with Sora and Grace did not want to ruin everything.
When she’d fallen asleep, she had decided she wasn’t going to say anything. It was the safest option. It was the right thing to do. Now that he was standing in front of her however, her resolve was crumbling; Grace did not have it in herself to just let him go. She wished she could, and she had tried for months; but now he was leaving her for good, and there would be no more saying hi at work, going for lunch with Elijah or going to concerts with their friends. Grace was sure she was about to ruin their friendship, that she was about to ruin everything. Her heart was breaking all over again.
Yet, Grace didn’t know how to stop the words from leaving her.
“Don’t go.” Grace whispered.
Rafael stopped in his tracks right there and then.
“Please don’t leave. I know I should be telling you how happy I am for you, and I promised myself I was going to. I just … I just can’t. I’m not strong enough.”
“Grace, wait …” Rafael started.
“It’s okay. I have no expectations, I swear. I just … I need to tell you, because if I don’t, I never will, and you’re leaving and things will never be the same anyway …”
Rafael took a small step towards her, placing his hands on her shoulders. The way he was looking at her, Grace imagined he could read right into her soul. And he wasn’t turning away.
“I know things won’t be the same, but it doesn’t mean I won’t be there for you when you need me. I’ll always be there for you.”
“But you won’t. You’re moving to another country, Raf. It’s not like you’re just moving to another neighborhood. This is goodbye for real, and you know it.”
“I’ll come back to visit, and you can visit too.”
There was the ghost of a smile on Grace’s face but also tears forming in her eyes. If she ignored everything around them, and focused solely on him, she could almost believe him. Grace wanted to believe him so badly. She could see the sincerity in his eyes, the belief he held in his words. Did he have any idea how much she loved him? How much she wished it could be enough? Rafael was moving on and she was stuck at the starting line. She had been stuck there ever since he had told her he was getting back together with Sora.
Grace was losing the love of her life, and he had no idea.
“Raf …”
“I still want you in my life. That’ll never change.” He said.
“Me too. Because you’re one of my closest friends but also … Also because I love you. I haven’t stopped having feelings for you.”
Rafael was speechless.
“Don’t worry, I know that won’t change anything … I just needed to say it and I hope I haven’t just ruined everything.”
“You haven’t ruined a single thing.” Rafael found his words again. “You should always know you can be honest with me.”
Grace nodded, but the regrets were slowly finding their way into her heart. Sure, honesty had lifted a weight off of her shoulders, but that weight had been replaced with the knowledge their friendship would probably never be the same.
“I … I wish I could know what to say. I’m sorry.” Rafael said.
“Don’t be. As long as I haven’t lost your friendship…” She said, trying to convince herself as much as him.
“Never. I promise you that.” He replied.
Grace hoped it was true, but she doubted it.
“When you need me the most, I’ll be there. I promise.” Rafael said.
Rafael opened his arms to her, and she stepped into them. One last hug before they parted ways. Grace savoured this moment, not knowing how much her life was about to be turned upside down. In a way she never expected.

TOLERATE IT
Book : Open Heart book 2
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x mc(Diana Ramirez)
Rating : General Audience
Category : Angst
Warning : None
Summary: Left alone to her thoughts Diana(MC) rethinks her relationship with Ethan in the course of time.
A/N : So here's the song fic that I promised to write and @genevievemd here's your tag, this is my first time writing a song fic and I hope it is to your liking.
I sit and watch you reading with your head low
I wake and watch you breathing with your eyes closed
I sit and watch you
I notice everything you do or don’t do
You are so much older and wiser and I–
28th April, 2019, 4.30 a.m.
Two more hours.....
Exactly a hundred and twenty minutes more.....
And every thing goes back to as they were before Miami....
But is that still possible? Can there be any turning back from the precipice of the cliff that is the embrace of Ethan Ramsey? To Diana, this was the point from where one only tumbled down and further down. She took in the sleeping form of the man tangled in her sheets, she lets her gaze softly graze the features of Ethan's face, the sharp jawline, the slightly puffed lips, a reminder of their passion, the rise and fall of his chest and the lines of experience, softened at sleep, adorning his incredibly handsome face. Ethan must have felt her stare as he spoke groggily, "Rookie..."and then slung his arm on her, eyes still clossed in an all consuming sleep. Perhaps for two more hours she could pretend everything was just as she wanted and Diana drifted back to sleep in the safe space that was Ethan's arms.....
For two hours more.......
28th April, 2019, 8.30 a.m.
She was happy....
She had her medical licence back.....
She had a spot in the diagnostic team just as she dreamt.....
Yet was she? It has been two hours since her game of pretend with Ethan had ended, they were back to being an intern and an attending and now the interns had their rounds with "Dr. Ramsey", and she had to pretend last night never happened, she had to forego all the lingering touches and the scorching gazes. He made it seem easy when he asks her about her patient, but she can't. She finds it impossible to not stare at him when his eyebrows get all scrunched up when he reads the patient chart or the way he pinched the bridge of his nose, when someone annoyed him and it takes every fibre of her being to stop herself from reaching out to him and as she took her patient's chart from him, she could feel the warmth of his gaze on her and for an infinitesimal moment their gazes meet and his eyes soften for a fraction of a moment, which he quickly masks with his stoicism and clearing his throat he says, "Make sure that your first day back doesn't go wrong and all your patients are still alive and breathing at the end of the day. You will leave detailed notes on Mr. Goldstein's condition at my office before the day ends. Have I made myself clear Dr. Ramirez?"
She tries to pretend that it doesn't affect her, she tries to make herself believe that it doesn't break her heart into a million little pieces but she can't, yet she is nothing if not stubborn and she puts up that mask of an overwhelmed intern who is standing before her medical idol as she utters, even as everything inside her shatters in the blow of an immense heart break, "Yes, Dr. Ramsey"......
I greet you with a battle heroes welcome
I take all your indiscretions all in good fun….
1st July, 2019, 12.03 a.m.
Two months...
That's how long she hasn't seen or heard from him....
Her friends gushed about how brave he had been while fighting an epidemic at the Amazons....
But she knows that all this bravery was just a façade, just a show for hiding the coward that is Ethan Ramsey.
And he has the audacity to call her "Rookie", she should have just turned her back on him but she didn't, she welcomed him back like the hero everyone considered him to be, for she was weak, a little part of her still believed that they could reverse the time and find the connection which they had. She could hardly control her exultation when he invited her to stay past the last call with him, maybe, just maybe their two months apart had helped him to realise his feelings.....
But the fates were cruel, they sneered at her hopeful heart and they jeered at her when he said that she should consider them "reset", through her tear glazed eyes she could see her hopes being dashed into the dirt and as she ran out of donahues that night, she missed the blue eyes which shone with conflict between the heart and head, all of which was lost in the night that enveloped the two warring hearts......
While you were building other worlds, where was I?
Where’s that man who’d throw blankets over my barbed wire?
I made you my temple, my mural, my sky
Now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life
Drawing hearts in the byline....
12th July, 2019, 10.30 a.m.
Of all lives that could be complicated, for some wierd reason her's was the only complicated one she could find. Everything had spiralled out of control when she broke her own rules, when her heart decided to fall for the only man with whom she wasn't supposed to be. When the one person who didn't want anything to do with her was the one with whom she had to spend most of her working hours. When that very same man asked her to join him for a home visit to the Stevenson home overlooking Quincy bay and when without a moment's hesitation she said yes. She told herself that she was excited for the chance if learning something new from her "mentor", but she knew she wasn't being truthful, because her answer had little to do with the learning experience and had everything to do with the company and Diana hated herself for that. She and Ethan tried to make small talk while driving to the Stevensons' place but promptly they fell into silence, which was nothing like the comfortable silences they once shared in a different lifetime. Now the silence carried the burden of millions of unsaid words and feelings that bubbled under the surface, Diana found herself slipping into the confines of her memories of the days of her med school......
14th March 2014, John Hopkins University, Library, 9.30p.m.
All she wanted was to study for the class tomorrow.
Was that too much to ask for?
And all the other girls did was giggle and disrupt her peace
Most of her friends had gone out and she had happily stayed back her trusty copy of Diagnostic Principles by Dr. Ramsey keeping her company. That man was something of a God, the theories and explanations in the book far surpassed any other book that she could find. She could very well tell that Dr. Ramsey didn't consider medicine as just a profession but as a passion and she strived to be like him and train under him once her three years of residency began. Dr. Ramsey was something of a legend here at his alma mater, but his fame mostly was contributed by his good looks and not his academic achievements, when confronted to be attracted to Ramsey by his looks, Diana vowed not once to look her idol up in the internet and meet him when she attained her goal of getting her residency at Edenbrook.....
She would find him....
She would learn from him.....
And she would be the best diagnostician of her time.....
Back in the present
Our fate has this irritable habit of reminding us of the things we would never get...
Of the things that are just out there, taunting us....
Near enough to see and crave for it....
But far enough to never reach....
And as brown met the blues as Diana held on to him for dear life and their eyes never once left the magnetic trance of the other's eyes, she could see the longing and pain in his eyes, the lament of not reaching the manga that lay before him as divine providence and she knew that her eyes reflected the same conflicted emotions, on one hand she wanted this moment to last forever and on the other hand she wanted to run, far away where his gravity didn't influence her anymore – far away from the feel of his gaze, of his lips on her that once was pure heaven turned now into her personal hell of eternal damnation and suffering....
As the moment ended and they turned to sit on the edge of the bed, both could not help but be riddled with the overwhelming question of "What could have been?"......
Always taking up too much space or time
You assume I am fine, but what would you do if I–
Break free and leave us in ruins
Took this dagger in me and removed it
Gain the weight of you then lose it
Believe me, I could do it
If it’s all in my head tell me now
Tell me I have got it wrong somehow
I know my love should be celebrated
But you tolerate it.....
16th May 2020, 9.30 p.m.
Edenbrook had closed....
Her home - the place where she almost died - the place which gave her back her life - the place where she fell in love after guarding her heart for ten years - the place which tied her to the man she loved–Ethan– Boston.....she was leaving everything behind, she had received an offer from Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Centre at Chicago. She had been refraining from giving them a reply for Ethan's sake, after all this time of hiding emotions, he had finally given in to it..... but there always was a 'but' in their relationship, if you could call it that, she was scared of asking him about what exactly they were, she was scared that if she became too forward he would run away once again and she was confused about his actions. At times he would be caring and a man who is utterly and irrevocably in love and the next moment he would be cold and aloof, with him there was no gurantee of a future together but a promise of a tomorrow, he was a paradox, a riddle, a mystery which has not yet been solved completely. It frustrated Diana, she wanted clarity and confirmations but she couldn't hurt him. She wanted to run, like he did last time, wanted to see what he did if she broke free of the– the thing they had, would he hurt the same way she did? Would he realise that he loved her the way she did? Or was all of it something, that she had made up in her head? Something that was built on the foundation of a one-sided imagination–something that consumed every part of her being but hardly touched him? Something that wasn't meant to be at all.......
But could she ever fill the void in her heart that is Ethan Ramsey?
Could she ever think of another person without comparing them to him?
I sit and watch you.........
17th May,2020, 2.30a.m.
Diana sat with her laptop open before her, she had just sent her word to AIMMC, she had turned down their offer. Boston was her life now, Ethan was her future, no matter how hard he tried to tell her otherwise, she would have both her career and him in her life. Her brain had told her to run away but the heart has it's reasons of which reason knows nothing and she followed her heart.To Diana Ramirez, Ethan Ramsey was her destiny, fate, kismet, call it what you may and if she had to wait till the end of the time to reach him, she would and in all the realities that the universe could whip up, she would choose him everytime.......

Seizing Opportunities
Author's note: Yay! This is one of my favorite prompts of CFWC Silly Love Stories and I could write several fics for all my pairings. But I’m a slow writer so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe the other ones will be posted later. [All characters are owned by Pixelberry Studios] Book: Open Heart Pairing: Rafael Aveiro x F!MC (Evelyn) Rating: E Word count: 1369 Summary: Rafael’s usual morning jog to clear his head gets a little sidetracked as a song brings back vivid memories of his previous night. Based on the prompts: CFWC Silly Love Stories: Day 10 - Songfic / Outra Vez
A chilly wind blows against Rafael's face the minute he steps out of the building of his apartment. He looks at the GPRS on his phone and scans his surroundings, following the directions to find the nearest open space where he can go for a jog. Though he's still adjusting to the fact he no longer lives in the neighborhood he was raised, he's certainly taking advantage of the perks of living by himself.
Once he arrives at the location, Rafael opens the music player app on his phone and puts on his earbuds. Looking around his new neighborhood, he takes his time during his warm-up walk to see the sights before he starts to jog. It's rather early and the city is quiet, but he always enjoyed watching the sunrise. Any opportunities he has to appreciate it whenever he can must be seized.
Once he begins to run, the music player changes to a rhythmic song. As the singer describes his feelings towards his lover along with the lyrics, he can't help but smile. Soon, memories of the previous night flood his mind.
Previous night
The rich scent of meat and spices of Caribbean chicken curry seeps through the air as Rafael opens the package of take-out food he brought home when the front door opens.
"I smell arroz con pollo al curry¹!" Evelyn chants.
A slow smile plays on his lips as her voice reaches his ears. It wasn't a surprise to either of them when they learned they have similar tastes in food, music, or hobbies. It felt more like a confirmation. These are just a few of the many reasons why it feels so right for them to be together.
"Hey, gorgeous," she says strolling into the kitchen.
"Right back at ya, girlfriend. Hungry?"
"Very! My mouth is watering right now."
"Then let's dig in."
She's about to reach for the plates when she stops herself. "Ugh… I can't. I have to take a shower first."
"Subway germs?"
"And the many unsanitary situations I had to expose myself today during my rounds. I feel so dirty..."
"I bet you do..." He mumbles with a smirk as he ogles her.
"Oh my God, Raf! That's not what I meant!" She shoves him playfully.
"But it is what I meant."
She purses her lips but doesn't hide her amusement. "I'm going to ignore your naughty remark for now and take a quick shower."
"For now? Does it mean you won't ignore it later?"
The doctor narrows her eyes. "I'll think about it."
Rafael chuckles and watches her sashay to the bathroom before he sets up the table. His attempt to wait for her to come back fails spectacularly just a few minutes later. As he goes to his room and searches for the one shirt of his she likes to wear, the fruity scent of her body wash fills his lungs. His eyes darken at the thought of lukewarm water cascading down her body, the loofah caressing her curves, her smile humming any random song that comes to mind.
Following his impulses, he minces to the bathroom, removes his sweatpants, and walks into the box.
She turns off the shower, presses the loofah against her body, then looks over her shoulder and smirks. "Didn't you have a shower an hour ago when I called to know if you're already at home?"
"I did. But I'm here to help you think about what I said," he says, moving closer to her and pressing her back against his chest.
"Is it really what you want right now?" She asks as he nuzzles her hair, his lips brushing against her wet skin.
"It is. But if it’s not what you want…" he whispers and threatens to step back. Before he could leave, one of her hands pulls him by the neck.
"Don't you dare," she hisses.
He smiles, knowing full well it wouldn't be wise of him to disobey.
The weather has kept most morning joggers away from the streets, but to Rafael, the cold feels refreshing. His body temperature has been rising more than usual and he's not entirely sure the only cause is the exercise. The vivid memories of intimate moments with her have certainly contributed to increase the sudden heat taking over his senses.
Previous night
His hands run down her sides, taking in every curve of her body as they kiss. He moans in delight when she grinds on him, but he's quickly silenced as her tongue invades his mouth in a searing kiss.
A wave of aching pleasure courses through his body while his manhood throbs against derriere. Pulling away from the kiss to come up for air, his hands grip her waist and his hips move in tandem with hers. "God, Eve! You're killing me…"
"Am I?" She asked, wiggling her backside against his shaft, still growing in response to the tortuous movement of her buttcheeks on his cock.
One of his hands digs into her hair and he pulls her back to his chest. "You have to stop torturing like this. I don't know how much longer I can hold it."
She smiles slyly and purrs. "Then don't."
Rafael decelerates and stops to drink some water and catch his breath. With so many lustful memories, he's glad there aren't so many people in the park or he'd feel too self-conscious. He looks down at his pants and chortles. One of the perks of cold weather is the fact that his arousal isn't as visible outdoors and he could stop by the convenience store nearby to buy a couple of things for breakfast.
He isn't completely sure he couldn't say the same about the moment he returns home. But the idea only brings a smile to his face as he walks towards the exit of the park. He knows there won't be any complaints on that matter.
Previous night
Gasps echo inside the bedroom as Rafael sinks into her. The smell of her hair, the smoothness of her skin, her plump lips kissing his neck. Every little detail he notices, every single one of her traits makes him crave her more.
Their lips meet again after a few slow but powerful thrusts. Legs lock around his waist, pulling him closer. Hands clutch his back, nails bury into his flesh, but the corners of his mouth move upwards as he groans. Jolts of pleasure build up within him, sending shivers down his spine. As he lays her on the bed, his hips increase speed. His urge to please her is as intense as his need for release. The familiar warmth of her walls, hugging him tighter, in a way only he knows how good it feels. It’s simply not the same with anyone else.
"Amor²..." she pleads between moans. "I'm so close."
"Good." He looks back at her, cupping her face glistening with sweat. "So am I."
After turning off the burner, Rafael takes the milk and coffee to the table then proceeds to look for the eggs. As he turns back to fry the eggs, his eyes land on Evelyn sitting on the table, lips twisted in a scowl. "Everything okay?"
"No…" She folds her arms. "You left me."
"I just went to the park for a jog. You know it's part of my routine."
"The bed was cold without you." Evelyn fake pouts.
He leaves the ingredients in his hands on the counter and saunters over to her, taking her hand in his. "If it makes you feel any better, it was so cold outside I regretted it the minute I left. But I was already out. And I was out of coffee. We need our morning cup of coffee."
She looks away to hide a smile. "Yeah, we do…"
"Will you forgive me?"
"It depends how much you're willing to make it up to me," she says, glancing at the more evident bulge in his pants.
"I'm so eager to prove I am sorry, amor," he whispers and goes down on his knees, lifting her knuckles to his lips.
"We'll see about that after breakfast."
"Whatever you say," he replies, dotting kisses along her arm, shoulder, and neck. As he reaches her cheek, she tries to escape, but he refuses to stop until she's smiling again.

New memories
Book/Pairing: Open Heart / Rafael Aveiro x F!MC (Octavia Blake) Word count/Warnings/Rating/Category: 991 / None / T / Fluffy Summary: Octavia and Rafael finally got time for a vacation, but how their first day goes?
1- This is a submission for @choicesficwriterscreations Vacation Prompts, Prompts: 1- Time to spare and 7- Dream trip. 2- This is kind of a follow up for Holidays Memories. 3- Thank you @tombraidxr for helping me with the review ♥, and sorry for taking your time! 4- English is not my first language / The characters belong to Pixelberry. / Feedback would be very appreciated.
Two years after that almost tragic snowstorm on Christmas day, Rafael had invited his now fiancee to go to Brazil with him. They would enjoy not only the vacation they have been planning, after almost two years of hard word on her residency and his changing of job, but also making new memories in the Summer, on a beach, together.
They were in Raf’s family house when Octavia was awakened with a kiss on her forehead.
“Morning babe.” Raf smiled.
Octavia had never been a morning person. She only woke up early when she had to. And being awakened after hours and hours in a flight and not a single appointment that demanded her presence, she was ready to fight him, but she contained her feelings when she remembered they were not in their house and it was not a typical morning, so maybe she could forgive him.
He caressed her hair. “I know babe, I know you don’t like to wake up so early, but I really wanted to enjoy this trip with you to the fullest.”
She pouted. “We can fully enjoy our trip after a good night of sleep, you know?”
He chuckled.
She opened her eyes against her will and looked at him seriously.
“I promise we’ll sleep as much as we can, but you have to come with me today!”
His excitement was so contagious, she couldn’t deny his invitation and got up, took a shower in minutes and followed him.
After a few steps walking in the sand they were already on the beach.
“Damn! I knew your family lived near the beach, but I never thought it was right next to it!” Octavia said, amazed.
Raf smiled and squeezed her hand. “See? I told you, you would want to see it!”
She smiled back and looked at the sea in front of her, the sand on her feet, the smell in the air, just like in her childhood memory when she travelled with her family.
They spread the canga on the sand and sat down on it, she leaned and rested her head on his shoulder and squeezed his hand too. “Damn babe…”
He smiled. “I know… I know.”
It was amazing how there was no need for complete sentences for them to understand each other.
She closed her eyes, enjoying that little moment for a few minutes.
Between the sound of the sea, Raf said: “As much as I love this, I think it’s better if we put on sunscreen or we’ll get a sunburn.”
“A real bad one I believe.”
They laughed and put sunscreen on each other's bodies, spreading it on their skin interspersing between fun and teasing moviments, or as much as teasing they could be in public.
Half an hour later lying on the sand and sunbathing, Octavia poked Raf’s waist. “Raf…”
“Hmm…?” He didn’t open his eyes.
“I wanna get into the water, are you coming?”
“I thought you’d never ask!” He smiled and ran. “The last one is the rotten egg!”
“Oh come on!” She ran after him to the water.
They threw themselves in the water like they were kids all over again, splashing water on each other, playing with the little waves that hit him.
When they were already breathless, one looked to another saying: “Truce?”
“Deal.”
Breathing and enjoying the water’s movement they approached each other and Octavia put her hands on his neck looking into his eyes. “Babe, I know I’m not the easiest person in the mornings, but this is totally worthy!”
Raf held her by her waist and closed the gap between them as much as he could in the water. “I know! Right?”
She kissed him sweetly, his lips had a salty taste but it didn’t matter, she loved the beach even though she was a grown woman now, and thank God the feeling was shared with the love of her life.
He deepened the kiss but a wave got them separated. “Ok, maybe we should get back to the sand now.”
They smiled and agreed.
With dried faces they were lying down again, but this time with an sunshade above their heads, time had passed and Octavia was almost falling asleep when she got a little startled. “Raf?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you feeling this too?”
“Feeling what, O?”
“This. All this calmness and lack of schedule to fulfill… I…I’m not used to it.”
He smiled. “I never pictured you as a workaholic before.”
“No, I’m not!”
“Well… I’m not the one complaining about being relaxed and with nothing else to do, on the beach!” He said, teasing her.
“Hey!” She poked him. “I’m not complaining, ok? I just… It has been so long since I had so much free time that now it feels kinda weird… Don’t you get it?”
He smiled and turned, leaning his body over hers, and kissed her sweetly. “I know babe, I feel you, I was just messing with you, but I’m trying not to think about it.” He looked at the water and looked back at her. “I missed this so much, and having both the beach and you together feels like a dream coming true, so I couldn’t be happier.”
She couldn’t feel her heart more warm than it was at that very moment, she smiled. He couldn’t help but stare at her in a silly way, since that smile was the kinda smile that illuminated his whole world as nothing else could do.
“What?” She asked, blushing as he was staring at her.
He smiled, put his arm around her neck and adjusted her body against his. “I... I love you. That's all.”
She hugged him in return and kissed his neck. “I love you too, silly!”
“Now forget about everything, and just enjoy all of this with me, ok?”
She smiled. “Ok, I can do that.”
She pecked his lip and they enjoyed the rest of the summer of their lives.

Happy Sunday Six! I’m currently stranded on the side of a road because my dad punctured the car tyre so what perfect time than to share two Sunday six’s
Nightmares (Rafael x OC)
A Loyal Companion (Ethan x MC)
“He’s barely left your side all evening. Well apart from when we were in the bedroom, celebrating our news.” Ethan broke through the silence.
“He was like that all day as well. Maybe he sensed something.” Victoria smiled looking down at the golden retriever.
“Actually that is possible. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell which can include smelling hormone change. He must’ve known before you did.” Ethan replied.
“Well that would explain why he snuggled up to me on the sofa and laid his head on my stomach.” Victoria chuckled, giving Jenner a few scratches behind the ears.
Jenner rested a paw on Victoria’s stomach right next to where Ethan’s hand was. He looked up at his owners with a happy smile resting his head against Victoria’s side.
“I think you’re going to have one fierce protector throughout this journey.” Ethan smiled.
