America’s Mach 3+ fighter, Bill Sweetman investigates
Hush KitFebruary 23, 2017
August 2, 2024
HOLY KEDLOCK by Bill Sweetman
If speed and range are your goals for an interceptor, you can’t beat the Lockheed YF-12. It’s hard to beat as a confusing story either. Technology demonstrator? Stalking horse for something quite different? Opportunistic effort to save a program in trouble? Possibly, all of the above.
North American’s F-108 Rapier Mach 3 interceptor was cancelled in September 1959. The F-108 was only eight months past mock-up review, following an on-again, off-again initial development. But the Rapier’s ASG-18 radar and GAR-9 missile combo, developed by Hughes, had started earlier than the F-108 itself and enjoyed more consistent support, and was not canceled along with the aircraft.
A few months later, in January 1960, the CIA awarded Lockheed a contract to build 12 A-12s. They would be purely photo birds, with a single pilot and one camera bay, and the goal was to operate them out of Area 51, thereby evading the British and German anoraks who had rumbled the U-2.
On May 1, 1960, Frank Powers’ U-2 was shot down near Sverdlovsk. No parades or hot hors d’oeuvres for him. Eisenhower approved a cover story that Khrushchev shot to smaller pieces than the airplane. The furious President banned any further overflights.
This left OXCART without a mission, barely six months into an expensive program, without a mission, and competing for money with the politically favored CORONA. Skunk Works boss Kelly Johnson proposed armed versions of the OXCART to the Air Force. It was risky because Air Force Chief of Staff Curtis LeMay was mounting a stalwart defense the XB-70 Valkyrie, but the interceptor version did not threaten the bomber. A contract was issued in October 1960 under which three A-12s would be completed as AF-12 interceptors with the F-108’s Hughes radar and missile system.
The AF-12, codenamed KEDLOCK, would feature some important differences from the CIA jets. Heavier and carrying more fuel, it would have a second cockpit replacing the camera bay, the massive ASG-18 radar in the nose, and four large weapon bays built into all-metal chines. (On the A-12, the chines were purely there to reduce the radar cross-section and were partly made of plastic material.) The GAR-9 was a 900-pound chonky boi and could carry either a high-explosive or blast-fragmentation warhead, with a range at launch up to 100 nm.
KEDLOCK benefited from the A-12 OXCART, which ran a year earlier and wrestled with the many basic problems of titanium use and propulsion development, and from the early start on ASG-18 and GAR-9. Wind tunnel tests showed that the huge ogival radome loused up the directional stability, so KEDLOCK acquired strakes under each engine nacelle and a large folding ventral fin.
Launching a weapon from a bay at Mach 3.2 was a challenge. Johnson’s deputy, Ben Rich, later said that the initial GAR-9 ejection system resulted in the missile passing between the front and rear cockpits, which would have been bad.
Flown in August 1963, the interceptor required little further work. Six out of seven missile shots were successful, the final shot from Mach 3.2 and 74,000 feet hitting a low-flying QB-47 drone—the first look-down, shoot-down interception and a trailblazer for the Navy’s AWG-9 and AIM-54 Phoenix programs.
KEDLOCK did a lot of the heavy lifting for the next version of the Blackbird, a reconnaissance-strike aircraft. First called RS-12, the project ran about a year behind KEDLOCK and emerged as the SR-71, with weapon bays converted to accommodate cameras and SIGINT gear.
The AF-12 had one more mission: deception. During 1963, as the pace of testing increased, observers started to notice the fast-moving A-12s and AF-12s, and the usual CIA/USAF tactic of confusing their reports with UFO sightings wore thin. Also, the project was far larger than the U-2 and involved more people and subcontractors, and many people in industry began to connect the dots. Bob Hotz’s staff at Aviation Week went to the Air Force with the news. Hotz would hold the story but not if anyone else got near it.
McNamara decided that the interceptor could be unveiled without compromising the A-12, and his view prevailed over the CIA’s caution. On February 24, 1964, two side-view photos were released of what was falsely described as the Lockheed A-11, and Johnson announced that a number of A-11s were being tested at Edwards Air Force Base. To keep the facts consistent with the President’s statement, two AF-12s were rushed from Area 51 to Edwards and quickly rolled into a hangar, where the heat from their airframes set the sprinklers off.
Had there been anything for it to shoot down, the YF-12 (as it was retrospectively designated, sometime before August 1964) might have been the ultimate interceptor. But the Soviet intercontinental strike force, even into the 1980s, amounted to a small and dwindling number of early Tu-95s, which Air Defense Command’s F-106s could cope with, and the YF-12s lived out their days as NASA test assets.

Can you do more headcanons about tma?
i can try but some might be a little random because those were specific ones about jon so here have a few radome ones some of these are a bit sad
SOOO.....
1. Jon is some form of neurodivergent ie either autism or adhd and when in a hyperfocus will sing/hum any song he hears and in this state is very impressionable so Tim will take advantage of this ie sing toxic by Britney Spears
2. Sasha and Tim would make bets on Jon and Martins arguments in season 1
3. Again this is a common one TIM WEARS HAWAIIAN SHIRTS, HEELYS, AND HAS DYED PINK OR BLUE HAIR
4. This is a sad one after escaping the lonely when martin makes tea it can stay warm and comforting for very long because he's unintentionally lonely this does have a plus side because Jon can't make tea for anything so in the safe house martin teaches Jon how to make both their properly and Jon gets to pay martin back for all the times Martin made him tea
5. Jon and Tim both love Monty Python and the two before the transfer to the archives would quote it to each other
6. Sasha and Tim are each others support system so if tim has a nightmare about Danny he will call her and if Sasha has a very bad day Tim will come over and just give her a shoulder to cry on
7. the archival assistants dragged jon to a pride parade in season 1 and there was a Polaroid taken that is one of the few photos that Jon, Martin, and Tim had of the true Sasha and Jon regrets that he wasn't truly smiling in that photo even though he was having actual fun and jon also risked every thing to get the photo and brought it with him and martin to the safe house

Air Show Radom 2023
Honestly, yesterday was one of the best days in my life! Just... Just looook. The night part of the show was my favourite. The airplanes looked like kind of eastern dragons with those fireworks and flares 🥺.
The rare moment when I truly miss having a good camera instead of taking photos with my phone because the captured moments are awesome but the quality of photos not so much.

Title: Sengoku Astray Jason
Here's an upgrade from Jason's armored OG "Astray Red Frame" 🔴⚔️, which we'll to get that, very soon. American-Japanese lived Nils Yajima 🇯🇵🇺🇸🧑🏿🦱 (formerly known as Nils Nielsen) created his owned masterpiece of a "Samurai Spirit" decked on inspiration from an actual Japanese armor and all its J-cultural glory. ⛩️🏯👹 He calls it, the "Sengoku Astray" and Jason 🐶⭐ obliged to wear! 😁
IMPORTANT NOTE: The word "Sengoku" (in Romaji "戦国") means "fighting throughout the country".
Sengoku Astray Jason Based on: 侍ノ弐 (trans: "Samurai No. 2") Sengoku Astray Gundam [CLICK ME!]
Armament(s):
Samurai Sword • The Sengoku Astray's primary weapons, called Kiku-ichimonji and Kotetsu, they are stored on top of the shoulders when not in use. By swinging the swords, the Sengoku Astray can launch shock waves, giving it ranged attack capability. This attack is strong enough to split the beam blast fired from the opponent who uses energy-based range weapons. The blades of the Samurai Swords have a particle alteration coating, and can be used to block beam attacks as well as cut through particle-based attacks and barriers. The Samurai Swords can also be used as throwing weapons.
Oni No Tate • A shield in the form of a demon face, it is normally mounted on the Sengoku Astray's back to provide rear protection. It is dismounted when additional frontal protection is required, such as when the suit is faced with heavy frontal attacks. This rarely happens to use the Samurai Swords for both defense and offense. The "eyes" of the shield can function as thrusters.
Radome Yo-Yo • A weapon given to the Sengoku Astray at random during the Original Weapon Battle. The yo-yo's string was used to wrap around an enemy's neck, and then pluck to emit an electric shock that knock the enemy out.
Axe • A normal wielded weapon that can also be used as a throwing weapon.
Hammer • This special hammer has three thrusters located at the back of its head. When the thrusters are activated, they increase the hammer's power and allow it to easily disperse multiple enemies.
Special Equipment(s)/Feature(s):
Sengoku Yoroi • Sengoku Yoroi refers to the new armor parts on the shoulders (which can also be referred to separately as 'Kata Yoroi') and around the knees that Nils created for the Sengoku Astray. They remedy the lack of armor on the original armor Astray Red Frame. The armor placement takes into account battling style and are fitted in areas where the suit is likely to get hit. The side armors of the shoulder-mounted Kata Yoroi also function as hidden arms that can be deployed to wield the Samurai Swords, or be used to perform the 'Particle Fa Jin' attack.
Particle Alteration Coating • A special coating that Nils applied on the Samurai Swords' blades. This coating changes the swords' Plavsky Particle band based on the direction of the blades, allowing them to cut through beams. The coating also allows the sword's Plavsky Particle band to match the Battle Field's control particle band, granting the Sengoku Astray the ability to cut through particle-based barrier. However, this coating can be a double-edged sword the particle band was transformed by the acceleration and this caused the blades to break as they were not adjusted to the new particle band.
Special Attack(s):
Particle Fa Jin • A melee attack derived from Chinese martial arts, it allows the Sengoku Astray to send its own Plavsky Particles into the opponent’s and destroy it from within. However, the Particle Fa Jin can be stopped if the Plavsky Particles cannot flow through. This attack can be performed using the main arms or the hidden arms.

CREATIVITY 27.08.23
I attended an air show in Radom and decided to make a souvenir for myself. So, I recorded the jets not only flying, but also passing by, very close to people. That gave me an opportunity to see the jets carefully and spot their detailes. So I gathered and edited my clips and photos together. The clips here contain: F-18, F-16, Billikens, P-51, JAS 39 Grippen

Doctor’s Orders-
Send me “📨” for your muse to blackmail mine into doing something lewd~
Also specify what the blackmail is/what they’re being forced to do if possible. @return-to-the-lewdiverse said: 📨 from Dr Quinzel~
Upon hearing of Tim's release from Arkham after an undercover stint, albeit one that went off the rails, Dr Quinzel took it upon herself to continue Tim's training and further push his mind into depravity, as well as wanting to see just how much her reconditioning of the Boy Wonder worked. She had slipped manilla envelope under his door containing various photos of Tim dressed up and feminised by the doctor. The envelope also contained a letter with a QR code upon it. Linked was a video from the Doc herself, with footage from the various sessions they enjoyed together, ones with Tim admitting all the shameful turn ons he had, his filthy fantasies, all sorts that would be extremely compromising in the wrong hands~! "So pretty boi, it's time to see just how much you took away from your stay at Arkham~! If my therapy has actually worked you'll obey perfectly even if you think you don't want to~! If not, well you've already seen what I have and I'm sure you can use that once clever brain of yours to figure out just what I'll do if you disobey~! Your task is simple really, fun too. Go out on patrol~" The wicked doctor sang tauntingly, "Though ditch that costume of yours. Instead go under your bed into the box you talked about, you know the one with every female vigilantes panties in, the ones you borrowed without them knowing, and pull out Batgirl's. Along with a skimpy little bra to match. Cape and cowl are a must and the utility belt~! Let's see how you fair patroling in that~!"
Radom manilla envelopes showing up at his door seemed to be quite a regular thing, but the context they have can definitely differ. He opens it to see the photos, remembering the times he spent with Doctor Quinzel and how special she made him feel while he was stuck in the asylum. Safe to say, he’s very fond of her approval, eager to please the Doctor. The threat was empty, because he felt so compelled to obey. As ordered, he went to that box, taking a pair of panties, and picking a bra to match. The set was purple and lacy, what one might expect from Barbara. Dressing didn’t take long, slipping into the garments. Next was the essentials- belt, cowl, cape- except it seems his cape was modified recently, more akin to Batgirl’s, short with the gold interior. Seems like only one thing was missing. Footwear. Tim recalled that Harley had given him a parting gift at their last session, echoing the sentiment to walk on the wild side every once in a while. He’s so by the book, kind of uptight- of course she’d catch onto that. The walk was literal, she had given him a pair of boots with a rather chunky heel, seemingly perfect for Gotham City’s rugged terrain. Once prepared, he strolls in front of the mirror to check out the reflection, posing as he inspected all angles before heading out for patrol. Hopefully it isn’t too cold tonight...

Frustracija odjekuje dok to govori. Nema ugovor o radu, nema određeno radno vrijeme. Tportal.hr Photo by Mikael Blomkvist Read the full article

8th Fighter Squadron Honors F-117 with Striking New Matte Black F-16 Flagship
The 8th Fighter Squadron has unveiled a new flagship: an F-16 painted matte black to resemble its iconic predecessor, the F-117.

On Jun. 12, 2024, the social media account of Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, posted on Instagram the first photos of the new flagship of the 8th Fighter Squadron: an F-16 Fighting Falcon (or “Viper” as the type is nicknamed within the fighter pilot community) sporting a black color scheme that is inspired by its iconic predecessor at the unit, the F-117 Nighthawk stealth jet.
Indeed, the aircraft, an F-16C Block 42 #88-0517, is primarily painted in a matte black color, giving it a stealthy appearance. The nose cone/radome and the underside of the fuselage appear to be painted in a lighter gray. The tail features the emblem of the 8th Fighter Squadron, also known as the “Black Sheep.” This is depicted by a graphic of a black sheep standing on a white thunderbolt.
The tail of F-16 #88-0517.
The tail code “HO” is visible, indicating the aircraft is based at Holloman Air Force Base. The top of the tail has a tail flash with a stylized F-117 and the text “Black Sheep” written in yellow on a black background, which is part of the squadron’s identity.
Overall, the combination of dark and light gray tones as well as the unmistakable squadron markings, give the aircraft a unique appearance.

The F-117-era
“The Nighthawk was transferred to Holloman in 1992 and was here longer than any other base. If you look at the history of this amazing aircraft, you’ll see why we’re so excited to honor its legacy,” says the text accompanying the photos of the new 8th FS’s flagship.
The 8th Fighter Squadron is still today an active unit of the United States Air Force, assigned to the 54th Fighter Group under the Air Education and Training Command, and stationed at Holloman AFB. The squadron currently operates F-16 and its role is initial training, transition training, and instructor upgrades on the Viper.
In 1992, the 8th FS, depending by the 49th Fighter Wing retired its F-15A Eagles and received the first Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk stealth fighters from the inactivated 416th Fighter Squadron.
After converting to the F-117A in May 1992, the 8th deployed fighters and crews to Southwest Asia in the 1990s for Operation Southern Watch, supporting UN weapons inspectors in Iraq and enforcing the no-fly zone to curb Saddam Hussein’s WMD programs. In 1998, the squadron’s F-117s were sent to the Gulf during Operation Desert Fox to enhance strike capabilities against high-value targets, although the operation concluded before their arrival due to the long flight from Holloman AFB to Kuwait.
On February 21, 1999, the 8th deployed F-117s and crews to Aviano Air Base, Italy, and Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, for Operation Allied Force, a NATO mission to stop ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. The squadron’s Nighthawks played a crucial role in the initial airstrikes against Yugoslavia’s air defenses.
But on March 27, 1999, “VEGA 31“, the F-117 Nighthawk #82-0806, flown by Lt. Col. Darrell P. Zelko, was shot down by SA-3 Goa surface-to-air missiles while returning to Aviano airbase, after a strike mission against a target near Belgrade. A US search and rescue team recovered the pilot a few hours after the crash. This incident marked the only loss of an F-117 in combat. Following this, Defense Secretary William Cohen ordered 12 additional F-117s to join the operation, bringing the total to 24.
After Allied Force, F-117s of the unit were also involved in OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom), during which the stealth jets deployed Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, and supported the invasion’s opening night, targeting a bunker believed to house Saddam Hussein. Despite not eliminating Hussein, the strike allowed the coalition to gain a strategic advantage, and the EGBU-27 bomb became the F-117’s primary weapon.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom, F-117 pilots flew over 80 missions, deploying nearly 100 enhanced guided bombs against key targets. Approximately 300 personnel supported these missions.
In 2006, it was announced that Holloman AFB would cease to host the F-117A, with the aircraft retiring by 2008. The planes were sent to Tonopah Airport, Nevada, for long-term storage due to the continued classification of their stealth technology. The last official flight of the F-117A was carried out in late April 2008, leading to the inactivation of the 8th Fighter Squadron after 67 years of active service on May 16, 2008. As we have explained in details for several years now, the retirement of the F-117 was not final and 16 years later, the Nighthawk still flies.

Viper unit
The squadron was reactivated and equipped with the F-22 on Sept. 25, 2009. In May 2011, the squadron ceased its operations, and on July 15, 2011, the 8th Fighter Squadron was officially deactivated. It was reactivated once again, at Holloman AFB, on Aug. 4, 2017, as an F-16 unit under the 54th Fighter Group, which at that time was a geographically-separated unit of the 56th Fighter Wing from Luke Air Force Base, Arizona.
In October 2018, the Fighter Group was realigned under the 49th Wing when Holloman was assigned to the Air Education and Training Command (AETC).

blue ghost
(Radom photo)

Blue Ghost Fireflies,
I have been photographing Blue Ghost fireflies for more than a week in North Carolina and Tennessee. In this photo from last year I have seen true peak, with hundreds of fireflies, which was very mesmerizing, almost dizzying. So much movement in almost total darkness. Absolutely incredible. Blue Ghost fireflies are unique species that doesn't blink and stays lit for many seconds or even more than a minute. This photo is called Blue Ghost Warriors, since in some cultures they believe that fireflies are souls of the deceased.
