Stillness, or Evening Reflections on Water

Rippling hills fading to flowing pastures.

Stand tall, friend, spread thy wings!

Bask in that settling sun,

Feel thee not time's scornful stings.

/

Violent crescendos, chromatic crashes,

Splashing about, a fight breaks out!

In seconds, friendly squabbling ends.

Calming, quiet chords, stillness once more stout.

/

Plunking ostinatos, calm but firm,

Waddling along the bank.

Marching to no destination,

In single file rank.

/

A splash! Descending melody falls

Below the surface, out of sight.

Bubbles - not quite stillness... and a return,

suitably sated for the night.

/

A beat of rest, a sip, or two, of drink,

Meditating in the shade of a young and browning tree,

Until a flash catches the eye, what beauty!

My lady white floats here before me!

/

What's this? A dash comes from behind

in frantic busy search

And gone just as soon

In one quick startled lurch.

/

Beautiful muse approaches, with her wounded wing,

Paying not a thought to me,

Then turns to peer into my eye,

And decides at once she will not flee.

/

From above, a stranger comes,

Flaunting his gallantry,

And more friends, too, stop by,

Why, it's me they've come to see!

/

And just as fast as they arrived,

All began to move away from I.

I, in awe, watch them go,

and at their beauty start to cry.

/

As darkness falls, retreat upon the bank.

Congregate in stunning flocks, black

and white and red. Fly thee far, foreign friend,

Lay thee down, till, at the morn, father is brought back.

/

The hills stand tall, though, yet,

As soft wind blows, and stragg'ler leaves his wake.

But slowly, as light recedes, so too

Do majestic crests fall, so stillness may make

/

A beautiful mirror of heaven above,

Rare at all feeling motion's gentle kiss.

Quiet is the pasture, tired are the fauna,

And all is in serene

/

RACHEL FLOWERS - "Inca Roads"  (Frank Zappa cover) - 2013

For those of you who don't know (or don't remember), Rachel Flowers first gained some notoriety by recreating Emerson, Lake and Palmer tunes on the piano/organ (Required Homework:  Go search YouTube for her rendition of "Tarkus" if you don't know to what I'm referring).  Rachel is blind, but that really is irrelevant when the cover is this great.

BTW, Rachel is playing everything on this track - keyboards, vocals, and yes, electric guitar!

If there's any justice in this world, Rachel should be a star any time now.........
