Just Another Menace Sunday w/ Jon Brion!
Just Another Menace Sunday" radio thing today! Listen here: 1 pm PT/4 pm ET Bombshell Radio, Toronto bombshellradio.com Hour 1: An Archival Conversation from 2009 with musical impresario Jon Brion (first time it's aired since then!) Hour 2: New (and some old) Melodic Rock 'n Roll from: Airborne Toxic Event, Dramarama, The Guess Who, The Racer, Racey, Neon Trees, CHVRCHES, Madeleine Kenny, Annie Hamilton, The Delays, Moby, Lewis Del Mar, Seawolf!
Who is Dennis The Menace? The story goes something like this. DTM listened to a lot of legendary New York City radio as a kid. Top 40 WABC. Progressive WNEW-FM. He also won a lot of "guess the song contests" that brought him into real radio studios where he decided he would be as good as the D.J.s he idolized! In 1972 the tender age of 15, Dennis the Menace auditioned for and was given his very own "Top 25" show on the first cable radio station in the U.S. (His parents drove him to the station!). Soon after, he was written up in the local newspaper as "New York's Youngest D.J." and that was the beginning of over 40 years on the radio! He has been on the air in New York, Florida, and as co-host of "Music Scene" on KISS-108, Boston where his interviews for the show also were heard on the "Rolling Stone Continuous History of Rock and Roll.” Today he is host/producer of two syndicated specialty radio shows broadcast from his Menace Studio in San Francisco. Starting with the Talking Heads in 1977 and some 600 interviews later, he considers his regular conversations with rock and rollers of note one of the most joyous parts of his life - only second to his daughter Kate! When he's not on the radio, he's a Consulting Creative Director, Writer, Producer for advertising and brand clients, Founder and Creative Director of a music content company for brands: PopCult and Creative Director for a new treat called Cat Sushi! And yes, he sleeps. Read the full article

In his short life, which was plagued by health issues and the tumultuous political world of the '60s, he rose from a rock 'n' roller to a major interpreter of the American Songbook to an Academy Award-nominated actor who wrote over 200 songs and left an indelible mark on our culture.
Single tickets are on sale today for the 2018 season of Lyrics & Lyricists, the country's preemineNT American Songbook series.
Producer Ted Chapin is working with some of Broadway's top talent - including Jonathan Groff, Rob Fisher and Amanda Green, Lynn Ahrens, David Loud, Jason Danieley and Noah Racey - to create shows exploring the works of such songwriters as Leonard Bernstein, Frank Loesser, Irving Berlin, Bobby Darin and Lynn Ahrens herself.

Are any of you good at puns?
I believe that hobbies and interests enrich and bring balance to our lives, so i am always trying new things that peak my interest. Some things are constant; art, mineral collecting, freemasonry. But others, those like yoga, running, tap dance, biking; often come and go depending health, proximity, time, and resources. This past November, I started playing roller derby, once again. I took some time off leading up to and through part my first term in the East. During my absence, the local team folded; to no one’s surprise. In October I was recruited by previous team mates to come to “Boot Camp” with them the following month. A group of 4 of us are now skating with a neighboring town’s larger team.
In the past I skated under the alias, “Deep Schist”. Which I like, as do most people when they hear it. But i have been toying with the idea of changing my skater name… if i find something better related to my interests/tastes.
The main reason is that i don’t have any special affinity to the rock type schist… or even to that many of the minerals that form in schist. I collect minerals to display and to compete in competitions at gem shows, and my cases are ONLY black and/or metallic minerals. Common crystallized minerals that form in schist are garnets, quartz, emeralds and other colorful/gemmy mineral specimens. And while the schist itself may be metallic or black, is it massive rock, made of compressed course grain minerals…not exactly the same thing.
Within that range, there is all kinds of stuff neater than “schist”, IMO. I collect crystallized mineral specimens, not “rocks”.
Lots of sulfides, anatase, chalcopyrite, native elements, poisonous, systematic, and rare minerals. Basically rare black crystals or rare metallic minerals/elements. Weirder or more obscure, the better. I collect all thumbnail size (1.5in x 1.5inch) specimens that are competition grade “Master” or higher. Or micros, or grains in viles; some stuff is VERY RARE. And rare gemstones. And carved octopus and rhinoceros. And other stuff my husband and i field collect, or dig from our or our friends’ claims. And in all that i don’t have a single piece of extra rare fancy schist that i love… i have stuff i love that are IN the schist. And that IS the pun, “Deep Schist”.. and yes, i DO still like it. But IDK.. Maybe it is time for new team, new name.
But that is only one reason. The other is that from day one when i started roller derby, i have always wanted to have a derby name that was something masonic related. I have only been doing roller derby off and on for like 2 ½ years, i have been a freemason for 9 years. It would be cool to have a name that is a nod to my activity in the craft. Those of you who are members of a lodge, you know exactly how it is.
Or if not that, something occult or literature related might be col….but i already have my short list picks for those:
“H.P. Shovecraft” and “Aleister Brawley”.
But I can’t think of anything masonic, nor can anyone i know… at least not anything that was clever and not stupid obvious. I really need to ask a larger sample set of freemasons. We are a small lodge, you know.
Coming up with these kinds of plays on words, is just not my thing… all of my current name options were thought of by friends of mine.
We have our first open scrimmage of the season in about two weeks.. so i have to make a decision before then.
Can any of you all think of potential Masonic themed Roller Derby names? Or ANY Roller Derby names related to things you may think i will like?
Please, nothing too bawdy or excessively racey…nothing that wouldn’t be fitting for a freemason or a married woman. Like pg-16… Roller Derby bouts are considered family entertainment, and this is something that would be announced during game play. I am working toward playing Pivot or Jammer this season, because i am one of the smaller women at 5ft 3in/114lbs.. not really built like a blocker.
Can any of you all think of potential Masonic themed Roller Derby names?

Giuda and MF Ruckus at The Bluebird
The Bluebird Theater is an East Colfax classic and a favorite of anyone who knows how to have a good time. They bring in a wide variety of local and touring bands with live shows almost every night of the week. I thought they might book some more mellow artists to recover from last weekend’s Hex Fest, but I was wrong. They’ve announced a show next Saturday that you should already be getting stoked for: September 14th, The Bluebird welcomes Giuda and MF Ruckus.
Rome is an ancient city known worldwide as a mecca for art, knowledge, architecture, and a pivot point for all of western civilization. Its heroes and villains are glorified in legends and shrouded in myth. Countless generations will forever remember the names of Romans like Julius Caesar, Marcus Aurelius, Gaius Marius, and of course, the guys from Giuda, Saturday night’s headliner.

Giuda is bringing their Junkshop Glam Rock extravaganza all the way from Italy. The band is the phoenix that emerged from a tragic conclusion to founding members’ former band, Taxi. Giuda’s music is rambunctious and irreverent, reminiscent of iconic 60s and 70s era British Glam Rock and enhanced with all the latest technological bells and whistles. Their first album, Racey Roller, was a huge success and was even named Vice’s album of the year. Spurred by the praise, they went on tour, playing hundreds of shows throughout Europe and North America. To date, they’ve released four full-length albums and a number of hit singles, including a cover of Elton John’s, Saturday Night’s Alright or Fighting. Their latest album, E.V.A., dropped in April of this year.

MF Ruckus is a five-headed rock monster stitched together from the remnants of Forth Yeer (AKA Forth Yeer Freshman), The STDs, Road Crew, and Home of the Brave. How none of their songs made it onto Guitar Hero is a mystery to me. Tony Lee and Parker Clark-Whitton absolutely shred over Logan O’Connor’s heavy bass lines. Tyrell Blosser’s percussion is unrelenting, and Aaron Howell draws audiences in with brawny vocals and exuberant stage antics. They’ve released two full-length albums, along with a bunch of live tracks and demos.
MF Ruckus has a ton of awesome side projects going on in addition to their music. They host a podcast aptly named The MF Podcast. It’s a Mutiny Transmission, done in partnership with Denver’s notorious Mutiny Information Cafe. Mutiny is the raddest of places, a coffee shop/bookstore where they host a myriad of events like live music, poetry readings, comedy, crafting activities, and a ton of others. If you’ve never been, you’re missing out. MF Ruckus is also working a graphic novel and concept album series called The Front Lines of Good Times. You can find the latest chapter on their website at mfruckus.com.
September 14th, Giuda and MF Ruckus are bringing The Bluebird a party for the history books. Tickets are available at bluebirdtheater.net.

Interview With Giuda
“I think of Giuda as a modern band that has sunk its roots in rock and roll”
Provided by Nina Molica Franco www.barleyarts.com
Italian glam-punks Giuda are gearing up for a U.S. tour this Spring and Summer. That includes gigs at Punk Rock Bowling Las Vegas and Asbury Park. They also released a two song single Bad Days Are Back, which epitomizes the band’s raw medley of classic punk and retro glam-rock. After corresponding with Giuda, the band discussed their upcoming tour, Punk Rock Bowling and a forthcoming album in the works.
SR: For those who may not be familiar with Giuda, how did it all start and how did the band get to where they are today?
Giuda: Some of us played together for many years in a band called Taxi, but we broke up in 2007 after releasing our second album and following the sudden passing of our drummer Francesco. Later that year we reformed as Giuda and went through a couple of lineup changes.
Our first record, Racey Roller, came out in 2010. Since then we’ve recorded two more albums and gigged constantly in Europe and the USA.
SR: How would you describe your sound? Who are some of your influences?
Giuda: Over the years we’ve been described as glam, power pop, punk, hard rock and compared to various different groups.
I think of Giuda as a modern band that has sunk its roots in rock and roll and is influenced by bands from the past such as Move, Slade and Slaughter & the Dogs, but that now has a recognizable and -dare I say –unique sound.
SR: What is the songwriting process like for Giuda? Who is usually involved?
Giuda: I usually come up with an idea when I play on my own at home, but it can happen anywhere if something strikes me and stimulates my imagination.
Everything then takes a more concrete form in the studio with help from the others. We’re very maniacal from this point of view and if something doesn’t totally convince us it’s immediately discarded. I think that in recent years we must have thrown away an entire discography.
Provided by Nina Molica Franco www.barleyarts.com
SR: I noticed that you guys have been hinting at a new album? Is there something new in the works, and when can we expect it?
Giuda: It ‘s true, we are writing new songs but we’re still in the early stages and it’ll be a while before a new disc sees the light of day. However, I think we should manage it sometime in 2018.
SR: Did you recently change drummers? How did that come to be?
Giuda: After six years Daniele decided to leave the group. It was a difficult but necessary decision for him.
We don’t lead regular lives and very often we’re far from home. I think this weighed him down in the long run.
Fortunately, we’ve already found a replacement. Alex, besides being a great drummer, is one of the boys and the determination with which he’s embarked on this adventure has given the band a new enthusiasm.
Provided by Nina Molica Franco www.barleyarts.com
SR: How did you get hooked up with the upcoming U.S. tour and spot on both Punk Rock Bowling club show? Who will you be sharing the stage with on the road?
Giuda: We took part in Punk Rock Bowling in Las Vegas and Asbury Park last year too.
In the last few years we’ve done about 350 gigs and played in many festivals, some very popular and well known, and thanks to that our name has been splashed around a lot. We’ve built up a reputation as a live band that’s been consolidated over time and is probably why we were invited back to Punk Rock Bowling this year.
At Asbury Park we’ll be playing with Sick Of It All, but unfortunately I can’t reveal who we’ll share the stage with in Las Vegas.
SR: Describe the typical Giuda show.
Giuda: Maybe you should ask someone who’s seen us play live!
Our shows are very “physical”, there are no pauses between songs and the setlist is carefully chosen so that there are no slumps. On stage we’re monolithic!
SR: Is there anything else we should stay tuned for? Anyone you’d like to give props to?
Giuda: Obviously! We’ll be in the United States soon and on our return we’ll have several dates around Europe before again leaving for the US where we’ll be staying for more than a month.
So, while waiting for the new studio work, don’t miss our concerts!

«RACEY ROLLER»
Orig. 2010/ Re. 2012
DEAD BEAT RECORDS / DAMAGED GOODS
Decibelios, sudor y cerveza. C’mon let’s do it!

Giuda - Racey Roller [2011]
genre: pub rock, proto punk, rock 'n' roll
"Racey Roller" seduces you from the very first track, called "Number 10" (watch the video!), the number of the football aces. All you need is inside the record: 70's glam lechery, anthems, melody, true lyrics, hands slammin', hatred against modern fooball, criminal riffs, sweat, smoke, friendship, Borghetti's taste in your mouth, will to dance, burning throaths. Giuda are actually on tour through Italy; they'll play in Florence at Exfila (see upcoming shows) on december 21st. Come on, let's die happily together.
