those pictures give me rabĂ©'s vibes, mainly the style &. expressions, always littering her physique with rich garnements, not willing to submit, just genuinely fair, not apologetic when imparting sarcastic responses to potential menaces under her harpyâlike gaze. this side only appears if discussions touches a fragile nerve or if somebody humbly demands how to portray rabene's loyalty to padmĂ©, terms like unwavering engagement or voluntarily serving without complaints merely catch its full extent â her loyalty's equal to a true planner of remorseless vengeances, not ashamed to utilize deceit to garner military or political knowledge to level up in strength, not hesitating to pick up chocking methods to eliminate nuisances for the senator, chasing enemies to decipher their intentions &. having fun with getting rid of those abominations ain't frightening options but justified choices. her observant eyes resemble a warning's look to reminder others to not cross boundaries or swords will do the job. the voice of truth might rely on the genius of her spouse known as the fearless quixotic hero as her unconditional protector, but everyone forgets the wardrobe mistress who represents a phantomâlike tracker able to obtain the necessary instruments to ensure that people're safe, rabene's the unflinching warrior convinced to honor &. remains dutiful.

annoyanceâs visible in observant eyes that scour over the Founder. by inspecting the belt, tender fingers reach it to unbuckle it then suddenly pause, reminiscing about fashion. â i want to gift you the finest belts. â an impromptu claim that is out of the context but rabĂ© already makes up her mind.

naboo handmaidens
rabé (born rabene tonsort) served as a handmaiden and hair & makeup consult for queen amidala of naboo. additionally, she taught the queen and her fellow handmaidens how to pick locks and other tricks she had picked up from her criminal past. prior to taking up her position as a handmaiden, rabé was a music student with a penchant for crime and mischief. she was forcefully removed from school when her involvement with a forgery ring came to light.
following amidalaâs final term as queen, rabĂ© chose to continue her musical education, enrolling in a prestigous school in nabooâs capital city of theed.Â

Excerpt of Queen's Peril novel by E.K. Johnston
There were five of them altogether, including Tsabin, who already stood behind the throne. Panaka presented them to the Queen with minimal flourish at the end of the second week of her reign. They each bowed politely when he put them forward, and Amidala acknowledged them with an identical nod. Her face was painted for full court, and her elaborate headpiece extended from her head in both directions. She was carefully impersonal, a mystery in voluminous green. Panaka was decently sure she hadnât actually moved in several hours, but there was no indication that her attention was flagging.
It had been a long day with the regional representativesâthere was a projected labor shortage for this yearâs grain harvest, and debate was split over whether to bring in offworlders to help with the work or to simply buy food from off planet and let the grain become next seasonâs fertilizerâand they were all eager to wrap up. Still, Amidala sat straightbacked on her throne and looked each girl full in the face as Panaka introduced them.
âRabene Tonsort, gifted artist and actress.â Rabeneâs placid expression indicated there was a great deal Panaka left out of her biography. âEirtama Ballory, scientist and engineer; Suyan Higin, seamstress and maker; and Sashah Adovaââ
Panaka trailed off as Sashah bowed, unable to quantify why exactly he thought the twelve-year-old was qualified for this, even though there was no doubt in his mind that she was. Amidala caught his pause and risked half a smile, more emotion than she usually showed in public.
âThank you, Captain,â she said, as though the introductions had been completed without incident. âYou have done a remarkable job in a short time to find such excellent candidates.â
âIt is my privilege,â Panaka said, bowing.
âWe will go up to the suite and talk further,â Amidala continued, now speaking directly to the girls. âThere are a few things we need to discuss.â
Panaka ground his teeth. Amidala had been exceptionally firm about not allowing guards into the suite without a very good reason, and he had a feeling she would shut him out of the coming conversation quite deliberately.
The Queen rose and led the way upstairs. The girls followed her into her rooms, and Tsabin shut the door, doing her best not to smile at Panakaâs expression. In the sitting room, Amidala indicated that they should all sit down, and then she perched on a chair by the hearth and pulled her headpiece off. Tsabin was standing next to her before sheâd finished extricating herself from all the pins, and accepted the handoff seamlessly.
âJust put it on the table for now,â Amidala said. Tsabin did, and took her seat again. PadmĂ© took a moment to shake her hair out and look at the girls Panaka had chosen. They were all physically similar to her, except Eirtama, who was blonde, and they all looked politely interested. Even Sashah wasnât cowed by the apartment. PadmĂ© was impressed.
âMy name is PadmĂ©,â she said, by way of introduction. She wanted them to understand. âI imagine Captain Panaka has explained the dangerous aspects of this position well enough, but I am hoping for something else in addition to bodyguards.â
âItâs not an addition,â Sashah said. She had a dreamy voice. âItâs an expansion.â
âIndeed,â PadmĂ© said. âBut itâs also a collaboration. Panaka selected each of you because you have talents that I do
not. I want to take that beginning and make us into something even stronger.â
âNot just six parts,â Suyan said. âYou want us to gain each otherâs skills.â
âHe hired me to teach you how to cheat,â Rabene said. She spoke with such candor that PadmĂ© suspected she was keeping secrets. That was all right for now, at least. PadmĂ© had plenty of secrets of her own. âApparently he doesnât think you are deceitful enough on your own, but Iâm starting to think heâs underestimated you.â
PadmĂ© smiled demurely. This was going better than she had expected. Leaving the selection up to Panaka had run the risk of him picking girls who were talented and loyal, but who werenât compatible with her particular style and goals. Somehow, both captain and Queen had gotten what they wanted: a group of handmaidens who could, hopefully, evolve into a unit to be reckoned with. Assuming, of course, their personalities were cohesive. There was a difference between ambition and commitment, and wanting to serve was not the same as being part of the whole.
âPadmĂ© and I have already started combat training together,â Tsabin said. âAnd Iâve been teaching her breathing exercises, which help control physical reactions.â
Eirtama leaned forward and picked up the headpiece. Apparently she was the type who always wanted to be doing something with her hands.
âAre they all like this?â she asked, turning the piece over to examine the part that attached to PadmĂ©âs head.
âSo large?â PadmĂ© replied.
âSo stiff and ungainly,â she clarified. âIs this an original or a replica of a historical piece? It must be super uncomfortable.â
âIt is,â PadmĂ© said. âAn original and uncomfortable, I mean.â
âI can design one that looks exactly the same and weighs half as much,â Eirtama said. âNo one will know the difference except for us.â
âLet me see that,â Suyan said, holding out her hands. Eirtama passed the headpiece over without hesitation. âOh, yes, we can improve this. I think it was made before Karlini silk was imported in bulk, and thereâs no reason we canât duplicate it in a more wearable style. This one can go in a museum or something.â
âWeâll look at your dresses as well.â Eirtama examined the green gown PadmĂ© wore with a critical eye. Suyan nodded. âThat at least looks like it was made with modern materials, but weâll see if we canât make some modifications for comfort and functionality.â
Tsabin turned expectantly to Sashah, who hadnât saidnanything indicating why Panaka had chosen her yet. PadmĂ© looked at her curiously, too.
âThe captain thinks we work for him,â Sashah said. âHe thinks of us as an extension of the Royal Security Forces. He doesnât understand what you want from us. And he has something on Rabene that he thinks he can use to control her.â
That was not a surprise. Rabene shrugged.
âWhen he said âartist and actress,â what he meant was that I forge classic art pieces and then convince offworlders to buy them as originals.â Rabene buried a snicker. âHe left out the part where I am also an accomplished musician, though. I just had to pick something at school, before they kicked me out, and I pickedââ
âCrime?â Tsabin was openly laughing now. Suyan looked vaguely scandalized, but even she was smiling.
âI picked music because Iâd never used it unconventionally,â said Rabene deliberately.
âOf course,â Tsabin said.
âDid he threaten you?â PadmĂ© asked. She would not stand for that.
âNot in so many words,â Rabene said. It didnât sound like Panaka had her worried about anything. âThe school didnât press charges after they caught me, and none of the offworlders know better. He did imply he could make it difficult for me if I said no.â
âI will tell him thatâs inappropriate,â PadmĂ© promised.
âI donât think you should,â Rabene said. âNot yet, anyway.â
The six of them sat there, digesting what that meant.
âWhy does he think itâs so dangerous?â Suyan said. âThere hasnât been an attack, direct or otherwise, on a Naboo monarch in decades. Youâre brilliant, but so was Sanandrassa, in her own way. So was everyone who has been queen. What does he think is coming?â
âHonestly, I think heâs just paranoid,â PadmĂ© said. âHe was a clerk in the legislature when he was young, and then
he went into security instead of art. I know he has a passing acquaintance with Senator Palpatine, so he probably knows more about offworld politics than most other guards. I think it started as just a hunch.â
âAnd now?â Eirtama asked.
âIâm not sure.â PadmĂ© hesitated. âWeâre facing a labor shortage for the harvest, which is nothing new. Debate usually goes back and forth on which solution to take, and this time the offworld buyer faction seems to be the strongest, probably because Sanandrassa supported isolationism during her reign and Iâve had only two weeks to start changing things. The Galactic Senate is trying to change some taxation laws, and Naboo would definitely be affected by that if anything passes. But thereâs no way to tell yet.â
âSo itâs paranoia with a good direction,â Rabene said.
âI donât want it to get out of control,â PadmĂ© said. âI want to be ready for anything, of course, but I donât want to be so afraid of my own shadow that I give up the parts of me that want to stay idealistic and hopeful. Thatâs why I wanted to be queen, really. To show that Naboo can be strong in its own traditions and a part of the galactic community.â
âWeâll be your shadow,â said Sashah.
PadmĂ© looked at each of them in turn. As with Tsabin, she had already decided she was going to trust them. They had been honest with her, and they had agreed to Panakaâs original terms, which included a significant confidentiality promise. Theyâd all given and gained to get here, to this room in the palace where they could plan the future for millions at a time, and that was common ground to start from, at the very least. When PadmĂ© met Tsabinâs eyes, the handmaiden nodded once.
âIn that case, I think there are some preliminary precautions we can take,â Rabene said. âI think we ought to have new names. Weâre all keeping secrets from our families, and everyone else on the planet, and I am slightly notorious, after all.â
âDo you have any suggestions?â PadmĂ© asked.
âYou had to give up PadmĂ©,â Tsabin said. âWhat if we all chose names that sounded similar to that?â
âThat would be perfect,â Rabene said. âI guarantee you that most people will hear that many ehs in a row and literally never be able to remember how many of us there are, let alone who is who.â
Eirtama clearly had objections to giving up her name but said nothing. Padmé leaned forward.
âYou are allowed to disagree with me in private, you know,â she said. âEspecially when weâre brainstorming ideas.â
âI like my name,â Eirtama said after a brief silence. âI was going to make it famous someday, you know? Building things or at least fixing them. I donât want to give it up.â
âIt has to be all of us or none, or it wonât work,â Rabene said. âAnd you can make your name famous after, if you really wanted to.â
âIââ Eirtama hesitated again.
âItâs very strange, to hear someone call you by a new name,â PadmĂ© said. âIt took me a while to get used to. I didnât have a choice, so I wonât make yours for you.â
âThe point is to be invisible,â Sashah said. âIf you want to be famous, this isnât the job for you.â
Eirtama straightened up at the critique, like she had been issued a direct challenge.
âI can do both,â she insisted. She slumped in acceptance, not quite defeat. âBut youâre right about waiting. I wonât be the youngest to do anything, I guess, but I can still be the best.â
It was clear Eirtama wasnât thrilled, but the first obstacle had been crossed.
âWhen youâre in makeup, we should always call you Your Highness,â Suyan suggested, clearing her throat to change the subject. Sashah looked at her and then quickly averted her eyes. âThat will help establish boundaries and let us know when weâre allowed to argue about things. Even if weâre alone.â
âWeâll all wear the makeup at some point, I think,â Tsabin said. âEven if itâs only for practice.â
âWhoever wears the face gets the title,â Eirtama said. She seemed determined to help make decisions, if only to make sure they were the ones she agreed with. It was better than nothing. âAnd weâll practice not being shocked if some palace page addresses us in company.â
âSpeaking of pages,â Sashah said. âI think I should be one. Youâll need someone who can run errands and not be suspicious because people see her all the time. Iâm the smallest and the least likely to be the Queen. Iâm the best choice.â
Padmé turned over all the suggestions in her head. They were coming together better than she could have hoped, and they were only getting started.
âI think PadmĂ© should be a page, too,â Rabene said.
âHow would that work?â Tsabin asked.
âIf thereâs magically another girl around the Queen, someone might notice,â Rabene said. âPeople should get used
to seeing her. No one pays attention to pages.â
âI think thatâs a direct contradiction,â Tsabin said. âBut I also think youâre right.â
Panaka would never allow it. The idea of PadmĂ© wandering around Theed as herself would push the captain too far. She was sure of it. But perhaps he would understand why that role would be a good one for her to play inside the palace walls. He was a reasonable person, and Rabeneâs logic was sound.
âWeâll ease him into it,â Sashah said, discerning the problem. âAnd Iâll be the primary page, anyway, which will help.â
They were all grinning openly now, delighted by the scheme they were weaving, the secrets they would hold close between them.
âRabĂ©,â Rabene said. âYour wardrobe mistress, I think.â
That would give her access to the most personal items that protected the Queenâher clothes, jewelry, and other accessoriesâand provide a reason for her to always be on hand. It was perfect for an intelligence officer.
âYanĂ©,â said Suyan. âIâll be in charge of liaising with the palace staff and droids.â
She would have her finger on the pulse of everything that went on inside the walls. No one would suspect anything abnormal if she was to appear suddenly in the kitchens or gardens to talk to someone about the Queenâs needs.
âEirtaĂ©,â Eirtama said. âCommunications.â
Everyone would be used to seeing her with a variety of tech in her hands. They wouldnât think about what she was doing with it.
âSachĂ©. The lowly page.â
No one would think much about seeing her at all.
Each girl had chosen something that would make them seem completely harmless, yet would also allow them to have additional functions without causing anyone to look twice. Their skills could be brought into play without anyone being the wiser.
PadmĂ© smiled and looked at Tsabin. Her first handmaiden. In the two weeks since the election, they had spent nearly every moment together, though most people hadnât been entirely aware of Tsabinâs presence. She had offered opinions on a variety of matters, and PadmĂ© was already coming to rely on Tsabinâs good sense to temper her own idealism. They were friends, or they were on their way to friendship. And they were learning to navigate the power imbalance between them.  It wasnât perfectâSachĂ© seemed to be avoiding YanĂ© deliberatelyâbut it was a start.
âI will be everyoneâs assistant,â Tsabin said. âThat way people will get used to my stepping into random roles, and also not question my absence if Iâm not visible.â
âAnd?â PadmĂ© asked. Tsabin would always have to follow the choices of others. The least they could do was give her this.
Tsabin smiled.
âSabĂ©.â

NĂądune: The Handmaidens
The word for handmaiden in Nabooro is nĂądune, and is rooted in the same word as âwarriorâ (tonde), as handmaidens are meant to not only accompany queens (or princesses, when Naboo was not yet an elected monarchy) and offer them companionship, but also guard and protect them when necessary.
Traditionally, handmaidens were older than the princess, but as the tradition of enshuĂ© ân canĂąk (masks and disguises), developed out of the older traditions of facepaint and veiling, handmaidens slowly became the same age as the princess or royal they were protecting in order to disguise themselves as her better.
The handmaid who closest resembles the one they protect (or, if several of them look similar, the title is afforded to a handmaid who has been injured in her duty towards her princess) is known as the shĂąm nĂądun, and is the highest ranking of the nĂądune, though that rank is more a formality than anything else in the present day.
The parallel figure to this for young princes is a cùnsag. Cùnsag have similar functions to nùdune, in that they are usually of an age with the prince or young royal or noble they protect so they can disguise themselves as each other in situations where it is necessary, though the forms their enshué take are different.
Regarding PadmĂ©âs nĂądune:
SabĂ© / Tsabin means âherald of new life/growthâ, translating literally as âmouth of the seed.â
EirtaĂ© / Eirtama means âpoetic.â
Ballory (Balori) is a vocational family name for those who were once royal or religious warriors, translating literally to âwarriors of the Six.â (More on âthe Sixâ soon!)
RabĂ© / Rabene means âdaughter of springâ.
Tonsort is also a once-vocational name for religious warriors, translating to âblessed warrior.â
SachĂ© / Sashah is a name with many meanings, generally understood as meaning âdeeper than meets the eyeâ, though can also be understood as âmysterious,â or âone who is less than trustworthyâ - translating literally as âto question what you see.â
Adova is a regional name for those from the Western continent.
While Sabé and Cordé are the nùdune who most resemble Padmé, Saché was given the title of shùm nùdun after the Invasion of Naboo.
YanĂ© / Suyan means âdiamond, gem,â though YanĂ© specifically is also a name in itself that means âlife, greenery.â
Higin is a historical vocational name for higher ranking tailors on Naboo, i.e. tailor.
CordĂ© / Cordyn is a traditional name meaning âprotector of the past.â
DormĂ© / Dorra means âcold,â and is one of several traditional winter names for children.
VersĂ© / Versaat means âblessed,â or, more literally, âdaughter of the Six.â
MoteĂ© is more of a metaphoric name/phrase that is best translated as âto bloom,â though it translates literally as âto grow wings,â kind of in the sense of... to come into your own?
As MoteĂ© doesnât have a canon âoriginalâ name i.e. before-she-was-a-handmaiden name, I came up with my own: Motil.
Most of these handmaiden names are actual names, though not all of them are particularly common ones (YanĂ© is the one that is most commonly in use in the present day). The -Ă© form is a presently somewhat old-fashioned way of constructing names used in previous centuries by royaltyâso, these names do mostly maintain their actual meaning, because the root for most of their names is the same.
* I do eventually intend to come up with more last names and assign them some, but thatâs... not a priority for me right now.

Naboo Review Day 4: Handmaidens: Rabé
Panaka had found Rabene Tonsort on a list of dropouts from one of Nabooâs more prestigious schools. She was, according to her record, brilliant in a variety of media, from music to acting to sculpture. Her teachers praised her creativity and adaptability. Her classmatesâshe had few friendsâenjoyed working with her, since she always seemed to deliver results. School administrators had thrown her out when it was discovered sheâd been running a forgery ring out of the schoolâs basement.

RABENE TONSORT attended a prestigious school on naboo, studying the arts. however, she soon began a forgery ring, selling counterfeit goods to offworlders. though she got away with this side business for a while, she was soon caught and forced to drop out. now with a criminal background, she had few options from that point on, and thought she would be reduced to abject poverty. however, captain panaka was recruiting handmaidens, personal bodyguards, for the new queen of naboo. the captain believed she could teach amidala to be deceitful, but rabene, upon meeting the new queen, did not think she needed much teaching. it was rabene that suggested the handmaidens take new names to confuse others and took the name rabĂ©.Â
during her service, rabĂ© served as wardrobe mistress, designing the queenâs wardrobe and makeup, and adding elements to the clothing and hairstyles that could be used by the queen (or any handmaiden serving as decoy) with tools for defense, subterfuge, or flight. she served padmĂ© during her two terms as queen, and when she became senator for naboo, gaining a reputation for being able to secure even the rarest of supplies astonishingly quick. she was devastated by padmĂ©âs death, and joined the amidalans in investigating her dear friendâs death. eventually, rabĂ© joined the rebellion, serving in logistics, getting supplied for the rebel forces. on occasion, she did her own share of spying and recruiting
