The Rabbitstick: The Not So Primitive Hunting Weapon
This is a fantastic example of how these weapons were used for hunting in many cultures!
(Also, please remember that the “returning boomerang” is a party trick, not an actual hunting weapon! Actual boomerangs were very much like these Rabbit Sticks, designed to be flung out to hit small game and stun or eliminate them so they could be caught and bagged for dinner, fur, etc.  Think of it like turning an actual hunting/war javelin into a lawn dart, it’s only used for fun!)

Again let's bring this out of the replies.
thebushcraftlab
9h
I bet you can't even name three survival schools like that. I work with instructors and majority of them are incredible people who routinely attend events like Rabbitstick where you can meet them, sit down and craft with them, etc.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
@thebushcraftlab I'm not here to promote any survival school, event, instructor or center so I will respectfully decline your attempted sophmoric taunt to name 3 schools. But, maybe if you re-read my prior reply to you; without give actual names, I advised over 900 institutions within the US alone, as an option for survival classes. Your local COMMUNITY COLLEGES. And there are several University Extension Offices in each state. So easily, I advised over 1000 different schools that darn near anyone, in any financial situation, can afford.
On to the second half of you reply, if you ask those instructors you claim to work with, I say claim because I have no current way to confirm or dispute what you said, not knowing who you are IRL, but, if you ask them if there are any survival schools and/or instructors that can be called fraudulent, disreputable, shady, dishonest or just plain lacking, I would say they can come up with a list as long as your arm. And that list will probably not include instructors who went to jail for fraud, endangerment or involuntary manslaughter. Or schools closed down for fraud.
In real life, there is not a subject being taught any where in the world that you will not find fraudsters, incompetent instructors or just plain idiots who call themselves an expert in that subject.
Just to make it clear, I AM NO EXPERT on the subject. I have never claimed to be an expert on any subject. I will share my experiences though. I never tell someone they HAVE to do this or that, or they HAVE to buy this or that. I will advise, suggest or recommend supplies or local CC classes, so if someone has the funds, they can make their own choice. I never demand or say someone has to buy or do such and such, or they can't call themselves a survivalist or prepper. I will never put down someone who is trying to become more self reliant/sufficient, no matter their age or disability.
Now I will bid you a great remainder of your week and end this conversation with you, seeing my posts may have came too close and hit a nerve with you, Besides I really don't want to continue wasting energy with sophomoric passive aggressive attempts to bait me to justify my opinion. And you do remember what they say about opinions. "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one". And as my grandpa use to add "There will always be someone there to tell you yours stinks, while theirs smell like roses."
Reply to several PM's I have been getting lately.
I see people talking about being a prepper or a survivalist. Then they go on about the thousands of dollars of supplies, tools, classes, fancy gizmos and so on and so forth. They talk about how they spend a week or maybe 2 every year living at home like it was grid down. Or hooking up their camp trailer and heading to the hills for 2 weeks in the spring or summer, to practice a "bug out" situation. That is all fine and dandy. Then they ask about me.
I tell them I'm not a prepper or survivalist. I go back to when I was growing up in the late 60's early 70's where "survivalists", rightfully, earned a bad name, just like many preppers have today. Being extremists of what you "must have" or you can't call yourself a survivalist (prepper). Where many talk about shooting on sight anyone not in their "squad", "group" or "community." Where they tell you that you need to join their group, giving them all your supplies, or you will die when the SHTF. Or that you're too old or your disability makes you a liability and will be dead in 2 weeks, so you should just give them your supplies so they can be a better survivalist (prepper). So I am proud to tell these people I am not a survivalist (prepper), I am survivor.
My parents taught me to stock up when times were plentiful. How to grow a garden. How to preserve the bounty from hunting, fishing and gardening. I not only learned how to live off the land, but have spent up to 4 months at a time, at different times of the year including the late fall and the deepest of winter (January/February), in the hills, with nothing more than a small pocket fishing line, a tarp a change of clothes, along with a pellet gun, a really cheap archery set, or just a knife to provide fresh meat. Basically, just what I could carry in a small day pack. When I've done this, I spent the entire time in the hills and not going into town for any reason.
So go ahead and buy the entire list of 10's of thousands of dollars of food and supplies, expensive guns, camping supplies to fill you bug out camp trailer and all the weekend or week long training classes that you want. I will stick with my basic training, basic plain jane supplies and skills that dates back to ancient times, on helping my loved ones and myself to survive. It has for the last 55+ years of my life.
Saying all that, there is one thing I always advise, not demand but advise for everyone to get or keep for hard times. Be it as simple as a flood, earthquake, tornado, hurricane or blizzard or as bad as a total societal collapse (Think The Postman or Book of Eli) from economics, war or whatever. It is a sense of humor. For even in the hardest of times, if you can find something to laugh about it will mentally make the hard times a lot easier.

Primitive Arts Today I'm prepping to present some primitive skills on Saturday, from raw materials to finished goods. I'm also getting some kid's activities together to draw in the latest generation. An assortment of stone-age technology laid out to take to the public.

Do you keep your old planner pages? I was just flipping through my on-the-go personal planner from March and was reminded of the time when my two baby sisters came over with their sewing machines for a day of crafty fun. We intended to sew ourselves matching aprons. And although we didn't get much sewing done that day, I treasure the conversations, laughter, and time together. I love looking back through previous planner pages. #DocumentedLife #memoryplanner 📒 #recollectionsplanner #plannerlove #personalplanner #craftmeetup #sewing #plannerlove #memorylane #archivedstories #planneraddict #rabbitstickers #hongeddinggu #wannathis #koreanstickers #cutekoreanstickers #stickerlover #diarystickers #plannerstickers #cutekoreanstationery #bringsbackmemories

I was just contemplating this blog and I don’t know proper etiquette how to start writing. In a letter I usually say dear so and so but here that seems strange....my dear friend and family...to whom it may concern...hello...
I’m clean!!! So exciting I just had to tell the world this fabulous news. Anyways we just finished cleaning up the Rabbitstick site and cleaning up the one and only me. Rabbitstick was wonderful as per usual. I played games with the multitude of kids(young and old), danced till my legs nigh fell right off and had a right jolly time. Rabbitstick for those who are wondering in a primitive skills gathering that is more like a family reunion for me. I sat in on several interesting classes and met some new friends(and old ones).
Tylor had to leave on Thursday morning and so missed mask night which is one of the best nights ever and the end of the week but he will hopefully be back next year(cough sneeze wink). Now I’ve sorted out my stuff and got a lovely backpack full of everything I might need for the next....well until I come back home. Now I’m off to bed so good night and sweet dreams.

Sandals
This post came from looking through a few class photos from Rabbitstick several years ago based on an inquiry. This is one of the years I taught my favorite sandal design, an ancient one though still cleverly marketed as a modern style.
Tumblr media
I call them saint sandals as they look like something you would see on a medieval depiction of some holy wanderer from Europe or the Middle East.  To me, these…
