I wonder why'd you think that Keiwa not having a berserk form would be a proof of him staying kind and not sinking low compared to other cases? Because I thought those main Riders aren't culpable in what those berserker forms do (outside of probably Sento), the berserker form's actions outside of their control, and the main Riders like Touma always behave like their usual kind self outside of that form, thus they never actually lose themselves to darkness as it's completely separate.

Well, to me none of the characters in question had to suffer in such a manner to prove themselves above the darkness or whatever.

Across the board, berserker forms do represent Riders at their lowest point, psychologically and emotionally. It's not just the trauma the form itself causes, it's a physical manifestation of the Rider's mental state. When they come to terms with their issues, or otherwise resolve them, the berserker form also "resolves" itself.

Like, Sento got his berserker form when the war broke out and he blamed himself for it because he created the Build system. When he found his resolve to end the war and prove that science can be used for good as much as evil, he got RabbitRabbit/TankTank. Touma got his in the aftermath of Kento's "death" and his supposed friends, the SoL, abandoning him. When he earned back the trust of his allies and got Kento back, he got Elemental Primitive Dragon.

My take on it? You don't need the berserker form to show that. You certainly don't need to pile even more trauma onto the Rider before they decide to stuff it and do as they always do.

Just show it in the story. Just have them as they always are. Have them fight the good fight. Against all odds.

Yes, overcoming a berserker form effectively shows them as good people, but there are other ways to show the same resilience of character, without putting the character in such a situation.

It's just that they won't do it, because ~trauma~ makes for "good drama". And of course, berserker form that turns into another form = more toys to sell.

Also, while they certainly aren't culpable for what they do while their faculties are compromised, that doesn't mean they won't blame themselves like it is their fault anyway. Why do you think Sento spent a good chunk of the war arc damn near catatonic?

Right now, Keiwa is at his lowest point. He just watched his sister and his friend brutally defeated and their dreams cut short. His own dream is on the line. He wants justice for everyone who was killed in the DGP- and it's personal, because his parents were victims. Is that a guy you want to see getting a berserker form that will add on to all the pain and suffering he's already been through?

These forms use the Hazard Trigger, but are essentially the purified versions of what a Hazard from should be in a stable condition using advanced variants of the two base Fullbottles that Sento has the highest compatibility with.

As RabbitRabbit, Build has super agility and speed combined with Mr. Fantastic stretchy spring limbs! As TankTank, Build has high power and defense and can change his legs into tank treads to outmaneuver his foes!

After many years of pulling appearances at conventions, Kamen Rider Build's final form Genius has at last been confirmed for an S.H. Figuarts release. Featuring high levels of details across his body for all 60 of the Fullbottles on it, Build Genius comes with his Fullbottle Buster - exactly the same as Rabbitrabbit and Tanktank's - and is promised to come with a bonus Hazard Trigger part if a campaign reached over 6000 retweets on Twitter, which it already has.

Sooo what is a Putotyra-Esque Berserk Form, how is it different from the other berserk forms in the heisei era?

Well, this got long lmao. Putting things under a cut~

Putotyra is unique in that it's not just a berserker form, but also a final form. Literally no other berserker form before (i.e. FangJoker) or after also serves as a final form for any Rider. Most of them are upgrade forms obtained between the base form and the final form. In later series that have more upgrades for the main Riders, they're usually the second upgrade form (e.g. base Build -> Build RabbitTank Sparkling -> Build Hazard, or base Saber -> Dragonic Knight -> Primitive Dragon).

Also, unlike most berserker forms, Eiji never gains full control over it until he loses access to the form in the finale of OOO. In most cases, the Rider gets a secondary item that brings the form under control, essentially turning it into another form altogether. In Build's case it was the FullFull Bottle, which gave him the RabbitRabbit and TankTank forms. In Saber's, it was the Elemental Dragon Ride Book which gave him Elemental Primitive Dragon.

There are also rare cases where the berserker form is brought under control by the Riders themselves- for instance, Shoutaro finding Philip in the burning Gaia Library and reaffirming their bond/gay love for each other was what brought FangJoker into their control. Or the berserker aspect is purposefully triggered for the power boost and with allies well out of the line of fire, which I count as the Rider having control over it since it's being used intentionally (iirc Gou used Dead Heat in such a manner).

Putotyra actually actively resisted any attempt Eiji made to bring it under his control, like him trying to use the Medals in Combos with other Core Medals. It would also transform him against his will, and even shattered the King's Core Medals after Eiji used them to transform instead of the normal Core Medals. Eventually they even started turning him into a Greeed.

Eiji only ever used Putotyra intentionally once- in the summer movie, when he used it as part of a sequence where he used Gatakiriba to create clones of himself which then transform into the other Full Combos. Any other time he used it, he was either using it against his will or not really the one using it at all (i.e., it's some kind of summon of Eiji like in final eps of Wizard or Movie War Ultimatum or Over the Quartzer).

man i honestly can't think of a more noticeable case of them blowing their load on a upgrade design as early they did with dragonic knight. like i really hope saber's final form kicks some serious ass cause otherwise it's gonna be. really unfortunate.

yeah it’s so ass backwards. i mean, aesthetically i like rabbittank sparkling and flame dragon more than rabbitrabbit or infinity style, but i’ve also never felt like the designs were an active downgrade as they went along, you know? here it’s like... they came up with one of the sickest suits in rider history and then dropped it after five episodes for a mediocre berserker form :/

Kamen Rider Build, Episode 39: The Unstoppable Genius

Hello, and welcome to the Watchathon, a blog where I (try to) watch an episode of TV every day, with a blog post where I write down my thoughts afterwards.

And now that the introductions are over with, here’s my thoughts on Episode 39 of Kamen Rider Build:

One last time (for Build himself at least), let’s start out by discussing the new upgrade form:

Genius Form is... okay, I’m just gonna say it, it’s not the best-looking. The bright white and silver, and having every FullBottle on his arms and legs, it’s pretty clutteres. Not a very elegant way to present the raw power of Pandora’s Box. Not that it’s awful, but, RabbitRabbit is still probably my preferred powerup form of Build.

Onto story stuff:

If last episode gave us a look at what sets Katsuragi Takumi apart from Kiryu Sento, this is where we see the full picture. Katsuragi explicitly dismisses the entire idea of having trust in even his friends as something straight out of a children’s manga, ambiguous thinking with no rational basis, as a result of how Gentoku once betrayed his trust.

Meanwhile, thinking back to the very first episode, Banjou Ryuga was an absolute stranger to Sento and yet he still believed he could be innocent, saving him from capture by Gentoku and the Guardians. Let alone how much trust he had in Banjou once they grew closer as friends.

But when Katsuragi Takumi is back in control? He sees Banjou solely as a part of Evolt who could turn back into him at any moment. The way he sees it, it’s best to kill him before that could happen.

Even the stuff that they have in common is different. The remarks comparing Banjou to a monkey are delivered less as playful ribbing and more as an irritated statement. The delivery of Sento’s “Am I not great? Am I not terrific? Am I not genius?” phrase once he finishes development on the Genius Bottle is infinitely less enthusiastic.

But the biggest thing, that Banjou points out near the end? Katsuragi Takumi lacks Kiryu Sento’s sense of justice, and we can presume his sincerely and strongly held belief in love and peace. Sento fought to help people, to protect them. That was his biggest priority, it was what made him fight as a Kamen Rider before he even had a clue that Evolt existed.

Katsuragi doesn’t have a shred of that. He’s not the hero that Sento was, so much as he is an anti-hero who simply wants to destroy Evolt.

And all of these, combined... it makes you miss Sento. Between his time possessed by Evolt and the time with Katsuragi in the driver’s seat, you start to truly miss the narcissistic, egotistical, and righteous superhero.

And that just makes it all the more satisfying when Katsuragi lets the personality of Kiryu Sento take over again, and you hear his voice give a playful remark about Banjou being the supporting cast. When Sento, back in action, does what Katsuragi just couldn’t and activates the Genius Bottle.

It certainly brought tears to my eyes, especially with Be The One playing as the insert song.
