DARKFACE (CARAOSCURA)
Having played at Screamfest 2023, this horror short that hails from Spain, is very much in the vein of a Grimm's fairy tale, but heavy on the terror aspect. Filmmakers Raúl Cerezo and Germán Sancho are able to delivery a high quality viewing experience that's smartly-paced, well-acted, and delivers the right amount of fright!

[:hu]The Elderly (2022)[:]
[:hu] M. Night Shyamalan 2015-ös The Visit című filmje óta tudjuk, a nagyszülők sem minden esetben azok az ölelgetnivaló kedves lelkek, akikre gyerekkorunkból emlékszünk.

Movie Review: In this heat wave, "The Elderly (Viejos)" don't suffer alone
The Spanish thriller “Viejos,” aka “The Elderly,” is a creepy, doom-laden sci-fi parable that doesn’t quite close the deal, a film of slow-building suspense whose climax lacks the clarity of intent and the level of terror in the performances to pay off. But filmmakers Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez give us something to chew on, even if they haven’t wholly digested their ideas…

"The Elderly"
“The Elderly”
This film was screened at Fantastic Fest The startling and horrific opening scene in co-directors Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez’s “The Elderly” where a senior woman leaps from her apartment balcony in a graphic, bloody suicide sets the tone for what’s the come. The film blends psychological and body horror in a way that’s extremely unsettling, and I became quickly and fully engrossed…

THE PASSENGER - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Dark Star Pictures
SYNOPSIS: In order to cut down on expenses, Blasco but’s an ad in Craig’s List. Joining him is a Mexican woman who has cancer, and a business woman taking her teenage daughter to her father as she can no longer control her. Blanco is clearly an eccentric character who is set in his ways and beliefs. Not a bad guy, just a man from a different era. On their way to Valencia their trip is interrupted when the driver hits a woman hiking in the dark of night. They decide to help her, but quickly learn that something is wrong and maybe they shouldn’t have let her in at all.
REVIEW: It’s rare when a film comes along that creates a must see genre event. THE PASSENGER blends numerous elements and mixes in Spanish cultural elements, borrowing cues from the original “The Evil Dead” and “Bad Taste,” to deliver on hell of a horror thrill ride.
I loved the screenplay. The story focuses on Blasco, a Spanish Ash from “The Evil Dead” with his own unique set of catch phrases and tools. The film starts with him preparing his van for the trip. He clearly treats it lovingly. As other characters join the party Blasco emerges as a “man’s man.” He once was a bullfighter, he was in a rock band, and he may have been in pest control.. The cassette deck in his van has a stuck tape, which plays classic Spanish music. His passengers are strong female characters with contemporary views. They find him abrasive, but Marta, the teenager, goes along with his stick to annoy her mother. I wouldn’t call him a misogynist, but he does have an Archie Bunker quality. As he says of his van, “It’s not old, it’s experience.” After the encounter on the road both Blasco and Marta begin to step up to the horror at hand. The other characters are nicely written. There is enough dialogue to help flush out who they are and make them engaging. I enjoyed the premise for the peril and was satisfied with the ending. Amusingly written, I would nominate it for a genre screenplay award.
THE PASSENGER features an excellent ensemble cast. I have to applaud Cristina Alcázar and Cecilia Suárez for putting up with the gore. Paula Gallego does an amazing job of creating this intelligent teenager with Moxy. Still, Ramiro Blas steals the show as Blasco. He is charming, offensive, an old codger who steps up to the plate when needed. A fantastic performance that I’d say is award worthy and has me hoping we might encounter him again.
I savored the practical effects and how they were enhanced by the visual effects. I had fun with the gore, it never crossed a line. They lingered on it just enough but never felt gratuitous. Hats off to the production team who created some amazing sequences in the van. It felt like a motorhome version of the cabin in the woods from “The Evil Dead.” I admired the framing, editing and cinematography of all the effects, but the witty banter between the characters was dynamic and delightful. The music and score create a fantastic tone to the film and enhances Blasco’s character.
I loved THE PASSENGER! It’s nostalgic. It’s fresh. It’s horrlarious! There is an essence to the screenplay, filmmaking and cast that embodies what a horror classic is. Here’s the thing, it never goes over the top as a Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, or a Spierig brothers film. There is just enough. The filmmakers strike a perfect balance that creates a fun thrill ride and one hell of a memorable character. I’m excited to see what these filmmakers deliver next and hope there is a second encounter with the extraordinary Blasco.
