ANONNNN YES! I thought about this a while back too when I was making a post about RWR/ATLA parallels (most of which I’m sure are intentional because they reference ATLA all the time, but I digress) but never had the motivation to write up the analysis for the Criss and Cross/Noise and Youngblood parallels, so I’m so glad we’re finally talking about it!

And not to make this post any longer than it already is, but I think it’s also worth mentioning as well that both Noise and Criss’s re-encounter with Youngblood and Cross ended with their friend under their blade:

And there’s even more to solidify the parallel between characters here as well.

Both Criss and Noise’s pronouns are he/they and Cross and Youngblood’s pronouns are he/him. But there also are some less obvious things in the way that Cross and Noise also visually parallel, i.e. Cross and Noise both having horns, and Cross and Noise both appearing to have some marking over one eye (Cross’s being the strike through his same eye that holds the key, Noise’s of course being the eye taken by the Bard King - though interestingly enough, they are the opposite eyes from each other). This might be a stretch (though it does fit in with the above), but the visual parallels alone between Cross and Noise might suggest that it’s highlighting rather the bigger accidental betrayal of Cross being stabbed and Noise being burned, for Cross out of fear of who was entering the cave and for Youngblood out of loss of control of his powers (this may even have actually been out of fear of what he could do as well, as Noise seems to hint toward this during their dinner conversation and Youngblood doesn’t have much solid argument back, suggesting more of a defensive and self-preserving argument rather than the whole truth [Noise: To be honest, I think you were.. just afraid of your own power.] [Youngblood: No.. I don’t- you don’t know- you don’t know- I don’t think you know as much as you should-] but I can’t be 100% certain about this). They’re both such similar stories of escape, accidental betrayal, and miscommunication, but ultimately of forgiveness in the end.. and I really hope that Noise can find the same happiness with Youngblood (as well as Roman) in the end with the courage to finally leave the Bard College and the Bard King behind.

criss & cross parallel noise & youngblood. allow me to explain. criss & cross both spent most of their lives in the cave, and then cross left to explore the outside world, while criss was too scared to do so. cross came back, and then a battle ensued. already, there are some obvious parallels to noise & youngblood's story. youngblood left the bard college, while noise stayed behind, youngblood returned and then they fought. 1/?

Criss and Cross representing plato's allegory of the cave has always been my favourite thing but linking that to Youngblood and Noise is genius you're so right!!

Like Youngblood realised the truth of the bard king at some point and he couldn't go back to worshipping him like it was nothing, so he ran even if it would kill him.

And Noise had plenty of opportunity to realise the bard king's true colours. He took Noise's fucking eye!! But even after realising the horrors the bard king is capable of, he chooses to stay and work for him as the first chair. Because it's easier, it's safer (in some ways) and it seems like Noise always wanted to be first chair anyway. It's hard to break away from a system like that when it's so ingrained into you. They probably can't even imagine a life outside of the bard king, it's easy to feel like staying is the only option.

And with Criss and Cross, Cross came back because he wanted to share all the wonder he'd found with Criss, to break the illusion of the cave. But Criss wanted to stay in ignorance, maybe not because he was happier exactly but because it was less terrifying. Which like yeah, when your world exists only as a cave, the idea of a sun and open air and a world outside of the rock would be almost too much for your brain to process.

Tbh I was hyped as soon as a saw the words "criss and cross" because I lobe them <33 but the actual analysis had me screaming

What color are most of the characters in RWR wear as ribbons or other clothes?

Blue.

Who are the only characters from Reston who don’t wear blue?

Roman, Ryker, and Burgundy.

Even AJ and Lyra wear blue.

My theory? Because we don’t know what their pasts are. We need to learn that.

We don’t need the pasts of the others. Aunt Patty is very straight forward with her adventuring. The kids are literally just kids. Dorian already talked about some of his past. The goat is a goat. Samuel is clearly just a guy who likes being vague and is bad at hiding it. AJ and Lyra are the DMs. We have no idea what happened in Ryker’s past even though Aunt Patty talks about hers. Burgundy hasn’t told us about herself either. All we know about them is she runs the bakery. With Roman, it could just mean that he doesn’t know Ryker’s past or doesn’t remember his own childhood. Maybe it’s less of a trust thing and more of what Roman knows about everyone?

Also, with the skeletons? Maybe one of them is that blond in the hallucination. This is honestly just speculation, but what if Ryker and Aunt Patty traveled with two other people? And when that blond tried to go back for their friend, they got killed (or the blond stayed in the cave and killed the other one). Criss did say “friends” after all. Just some thoughts I had about the new episode.

Ep 4: No Looking Back

Fanfic idea where Cross returned and instead of being killed by Criss, they went through the communicave as planned.

Watching back on that episode and there’s certain details that are really interesting to me about Criss and Crosses backstory that I think would make a really good fic to explore. We know Cross left to go explore the world and left Criss behind before coming back to get them. But Criss also says that them and Cross were starting to grow apart and that’s why he made the cave. There’s so many unanswered questions here! Why were they in the cave? Why haven’t they seen the outside world before and why was Criss so scared of it? Why were they growing apart and does it have anything to do with Cross wanting to leave? What would their answers and visions have been? Why the hell did Criss make a cave that fucks you up that much like damn Criss chill, you thought your bone-friend was gonna be the one going in there not some strangers.
