Going to continue the RWBY watchalong textposts. 'Cause I will probably need them to cry over simpler times once I finish the show.

Thoughts on just the first three episodes of season one here because I had too many...

Season 01 Episode 01: Ruby Rose

- Very reminiscent of "I will show you fear in a handful of dust."

- That crime boss was in Yang's trailer. Now we know why he was there. He wanted it to rain men.

- The way Ruby made sure to check in with the shopkeeper before leaving. 🥹

- OOOOOOooooooooh! NOICE fight scenes!

- Hmmm. Villain with an obscured face. A mystery is being developed. Betrayal imminent.

- Blonde huntress. I too would want her autograph. She looks so pretty.

- The way she goes, "If it were up to me..." somehow reminds moi of both McGonagall and Snape.

- Silver eyes are worth calling attention to. Huh. If I remember what my sibling had mentioned once, this is important. Professor Ozpin notes it as well. I can't recall why though. Good thing, I guess.

- Cookies be so good Ruby can't help but stuff her face. Relatable.

- Ahhh. Uncle Qrow. I hope he didn't get too bullied for his name.

- Ruby is freaking precious. I love her. Noble little kiddo. Plus that high-pitched excitement... Cinnamon roll alert!

- Professor Ozpin's glasses are so extra. The heart monitor like thing beside the frames. The small little spectacles. The arch between the viewing bits akin to a parabola. I MUST HAVE THEM.

- Yang. Such a great sister. Almost suffocating her sibling with her love. Adorable!!!

- Ruby doesn't want bees knees. Do bees have knees?

- Yang coming in clutch with the truth. Special ladies, the both of them.

- I can't. Love how the headshots for Roman Torchwick look like the sketch equivalent of our world. Gave me a good laugh.

- Faunus rights. Must be important. Don't like the White Fang's disruption of the peace, but their logo is cool.

- From Signal to Beacon... They really want to shine a light on the guiding forces. Appreciate it.

- Blonde huntress is Glynda Goodwitch?! Is Elphaba coming too?!?!

- "Our world is experiencing an incredible time of peace..." Way to jinx it. Now we know where it all went wrong. 😂

- The ending credits song is so gooooooood!

- Looks like the vomit guy has a legacy to live up to. At least his team has his back. That's nice to see.

- "Victory is in a simple soul." Really honing in on the simple part. The introductory bit also stressed on it.

- Consider me intrigued. Who will Ruby and Yang meet in Beacon? How shall the peace be discarded? And will "Vomit Boy" ever get rid of his initial impression and nickname?

- Wait. Is Ruby the youngest because 'Little' Red Riding Hood is her character backdrop?

Season 01 Episode 02: The Shining Beacon - Pt I

- This opening song. Ugh. So good. Chef's kiss!!!

- Beacon is here. So are Yang and Ruby. And fangirl Ruby as well.

- Her weapon is called Crescent Rose?!?! 🤩👏🏻😍

- Pulling Ruby by the hood of her cape. Using it to cover her face and be an annoyance. Yang knows exactly why it was made and how to use it.

- Oh my Gods. Yang left Ruby spinning and she fell for Weiss. Well, her suitcases I guess. But still. Meet-cute!

- My bad. This is a meet-disaster. I love it! Plus, Weiss' points sank in a little too well. Both for Ruby and her. That sneeze proved it.

- Blake being buried in a book and finding the vial of dust with what can only be the Schnee logo. Huh. It's the same one which was present on the boxes Adam and her were looting. Snowflake. OOOOOOooooooh!

- Ruby is not just a dolt. She is a "complete dolt."

- Listen. Ruby called Weiss princess. Of course I am shipping it. TriMberly in a different bottle... Jokes aside though, I can't wait for Yang and Blake to meet soon!!!

- Whoa. Blake is really giving it to Weiss. NOICE!

- Weiss is pouty heiress baby, as well as a lowkey bully. Blake left. And Ruby is sad and lying on the floor. What a day.

- Vomit guy is Jaune. Ahhh. Motion sickness really out here kicking his arse. And now he is thinking of giving Ruby a nickname; "Crater-face." Is this what they call banter?

- Jaune wants the ladies to love him. Samesies my dude.

- The sword and shield fall out of Jaune's hands. That's what they do. 😆

- Wait. Ruby made that weapon?!? Holy mother of shirtballs. Does that mean Yang also forged hers? Coooool!

- Jaune does not only seem like a good guy, but also someone who has a name to live up to. Hmmm. Is he okie?

- "Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet." So sweet! Jaune's mom should consider adopting me.

- Basically Ruby and Jaune are those biatches who look at each other and go, "Exactly!"

- The end credits song... 😍

Season 01 Episode 03: The Shining Beacon - Pt II

- Opening song. Love you always... Ruby is behind a white caped lady emitting white roses. Her mum am assuming. Also, the winged figure and other assorted monsters with what I think are bones at their back are giving major zombie vibes.

- Yang saved Ruby a seat. Of course. She be a good sibling. The cycle of leaving folks behind continues... Jokes!

- Poor Jaune though. He really be complaining out loud. Someone heard him it seems. Maybe she is "nice and quirky."

- Yang really thinks Ruby is dramatic enough to call a possible meltdown an explosion. LoLL! I can see it.

- Ruby's snort was cute and now she is recalling her encounter with "a crabby girl," while said crabby girl is right behind her... Why is this so funny. It's been done before. But this is somehow better.

- "Oh my God. You really exploded." That line delivery was goooood.

- Weiss just carries a pamphlet titled "Dust for dummies and other Inadequate Individuals" on her at all times?! And of course she has the disclaimer memorised.

- Jaune is catching strays, Ruby is a sweet bean who cannot understand sarcasm and Weiss needs to be not so mean.

- Why did I just realise Professor Ozpin is supposed to be the Wizard of Oz? Still don't know what fairytale character Jaune is though...

- This isn't a first day toast. It's a roast paired with an almost sinister call for action. Hmmm. Maybe Ozpin sounding like he isn't there will play a major role later.

- Jaune. You lovable dork. Who questioned your natural blondeness?

- Sleepover alert!!! Ooooooh! Love Ruby's eye mask.

- Not the boys showing off and preening. Ugh. At least Yang likes it. Also, Jaune is actually wearing a onesie?! Little baby!!!

- Ruby writing a letter to her friends back home is ADORABLE!!! Awww. She is also feeling lonely.

- Yang's pause when trying to describe Jaune isn't fooling anyone. And Ruby. You precious kiddo... Negative friend. 😆

- "You just made one friend and one enemy!" Yang really does not pull her punches. 😂

- There should have been a drinking game going on in that hall for every time Yang gets hit by a pillow. The doggie cushion was extremely cute though.

- Yang giving good advise. Love to see it!

- Oh my Gods. Ruby is the reason Yang meets Blake for the first time here?! AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! If this somehow parallels to Weiss and Ruby also getting together, I will throw a party.

- Just realised Blake is reading by the candlelight. This girl. What a nerd. (said as affectionately as possible)

- On an unrelated note, I really like both Yang and Ruby's tanktops. And what Blake's wearing. The fashion in this show is on point.

- Ruby was so nervous she almost asked Blake to call her Crater-face... Been there.

- Yang is extrovert extraordinaire. Blake will not budge. War of attrition, anyone?

- This "lost cause" will be your future girlfriend Yang! Funny how that works... 🤩

- I would totally read the book Blake's reading. Sounds pretty interesting. Is it a real thing?

- Awwww. Ruby has such a good heart. Happily ever afters for everyone. Gods. I hope she never loses her belief system.

- The fact that Yang used to read to Ruby as a kid reminds me of how the blonde practically raised her sister. She should be proud. Of both Ruby and her own self.

- Weiss and Yang saying the 'you again' dialogue together, while aiming it at someone else entirely was so good. Made me laugh.

- "...that's how I met your mother. And aunt." Blake someday, probably.

- Different ending song. Featured only Weiss. I want to hear all of it. Why did it stop like that?

- Wait. Is Jaune supposed to be Joan of Arc?! If so, NOICE!!!

Edit: If you saw the original 'Juane,' which I then proceeded to turn into Jayne here and there when I tried to fix his name... No you didn't.

Edit Edit: Added the 'Season 01' prefix along with episode names to each header of them thoughts, and changed their colours to blue while turning them bold... 'cause am nice like that.

So, what happened here? For this to go from-

Raven: “The creatures of Grimm have a master named Salem. She can’t be stopped, she can’t be reasoned with, and she will not rest until humanity crumbles at her feet.”

Raven: To Ruby with disdain, “You sound just like your mother.”

Let me lay some of my cards on the table. I’m in the “Summer is still alive” camp and I got thoughts on: if Summer is still alive, why has she not been in Yang and Ruby’s life?

Not even a peep? For 14 years?

Something BIG had to have happened to her to keep her away from them.

Now, a lot of folks will go straight to where Ruby jumped to: Summer got Grimm hound-ed by Salem

But I think that’s takes a lot of agency away from Summer and the building revelation of her character and the purpose she serves in the narrative.

If Summer has been grimmified, I posit it was by her own doing, by choice. And her choice alone.

Qrow: “You’re special the same way your mom was…The creatures of Grimm were afraid of those silver eyed warriors.”

Salem: “Do you feel it? Don’t fight it girl. It can sense your trepidation. You must make it dread you.”

How does Salem illustrate the melding of Cinders flesh with the Grimm arm and mastery over it?

In the few instances we get, how are silver eyes described in their effect on Grimm? Obliteration, yes. Resistance to their influence? Possibly (see Ruby & the apathy). But command over them? Let’s explore that.

We are working with a pretty small dataset here, so you’ll forgive me for mostly drawing from Cinder for this (separate post I think the hound is a reanimated corpse and so different from true living hybrids like Cinder (& hypothetically Summer)).

Grimm evolve and Grimm hybrids, like Cinder, adapt.

From vol4 to vol8, Cinder’s Grimm arm grows. It spreads. And she becomes more comfortable with it as time progresses.

Cinders Grimm arm has become an integral part of her and, side note, I dislike theories that revolve her hypothetical redemption around her being purified of evil (Grimm) by silver eyes.

[But that’s just me, I want the monstrous to stay monstrous rather than erased or watered down for easy digestion. Let the monster stay a monster in its appearance and still be worthy of love, and so on and so forth.]

So, we come back to Summer Rose.

Summer confronted Salem, learned something earth shattering, destroyed Raven’s faith and trust in her, and did something that prevented her from returning to her daughters for more than a decade.

What did Summer do? Agency, we’re thinking strong choices here.

Choices that are radical but in line for a character with strong convictions, an alluded to pedestal she stands upon and all the complexes that comes with, perhaps a little self destructive, and a big heart. Big enough to sympathize with the devil and do something about it.

The thing that could be preventing Summer from returning home could be as simple as:

After she learned the truth about Oz’s shadow war, she joined Salem’s side, and won’t return until she’s seen it through to the end.

But I want to put some spice on there because what if:

After learning whatever it was Salem told Summer, that turned her world upside down, Summer looked down into the pools of black and took the plunge

To understand Salem on a molecular level

To be Grimm as Salem is Grimm

To be a world changer

In the world of Remnant, that’s what the Grimm are. A force of destructive change, like hurricanes and wildfires, they shape the world through calamity. Disaster doesn’t feel any one way about you, it just is. It is devastating, but it doesn’t hate you. And it doesn’t love you either.

So, what would that make Summer?

How do you think that’s changed her, fundamentally?

Bloody evolution indeed.

And that’s why she stayed away. Summer changed, and now she looks a little more on the outside how she feels on the inside. But to the rest of the world, she is something horrifying. Unspeakable.

She didn’t want to give her girls nightmares.

Yeah, Summer was the inspiration for the Hound, and Cinder’s Grimm arm. But not in the way Ruby thinks.

Imagine being made a leader while being 15 at the time and having no experience in the position. You have to be responsible for others, not just your teammates, but for the people who trust you as well. But then you see those people get hurt or killed, and there's nothing you could do about it. But despite that, you continue to fight because if you don't, then who will? But even then, people you care about get hurt.

Then you learn about the ancient evil that wants to destroy everything you know and love and it wants you because you pose an actual threat to it, and you also learn that this evil took your mother from you.

But despite that you try to make the right decisions to save as many people as you can, but you fail anyway, and once again people you care about are getting killed, which hurts even more when this is the second time you lose them.

And then you end up in a place where nothing is like it's seems. You and your friends must fight to get home, but there's really not much you can do because of everything that happened. And the worst part is that you don't know who you are anymore. And then people think you'll give some inspiring speech to make them feel better, but after everything that happened you're done with being the leader and you're tired to be the one who always has to say something to make things better when you're the one who actually needs it.

Ruby has been through a lot, so it's understandable she's done with being a leader since her decision ends up making things worse. She's just a child with the responsibility no one is really ready for, and she can't get others out of the mess they're in because she's in it too.

Wrapped up season one of RWBY with episodes thirteen to sixteen. Excited for what's to come!

Season 01 Episode 13: Forever Fall - Pt I

- "I don't wanna hear your absolution."

- I too would like to jump on beds. Nora should exchange places with me for the duration of this scene

- Okie, so the entire team shares one bedroom. No matter the sex. Huh. Aren't these folks teenagers?

- Jaune. I can forgive everything. Everything, BUT disappointing Pyrrha. How dare you.

- He has already locked himself out once. LoLLL!

- Am glad Jaune at least told someone about his situation. Thank Gods for nice neighbours.

- Holy shikes. Ruby's pep talk was good. However, am scared for her mental health now. Being a team leader doesn't mean you are not human. Not allowed to be a failure... She is just a kid. Let her be that!

- Cardin's such a douchebag. Those rapier wasps should be set on him.

- I am moving to the Forest of Forever Fall now. See ya!

- A field trip with stakes so high, you can die. This place needs a chill pill so bad.

- The scene where Team RWBY and Team JNPR sans Jaune are collecting sap... Looks straight out of a cottagecore magazine. Cute!

- Jaune. Don't do it. Don't you dare throw that jar of sap at Pyrrha... Oh thank Gods. Wonder what's about to happen with him.

- Team CRDL ending. The music here was so mystical!

Season 01 Episode 14: Forever Fall Pt - II

- "This will be the day we have waited for..."

- Jaune. Shite. This is bad. He is black and blue.

- WHOA. Aura glows bright, saves Jaune from Cardin's hold of tight.

- Big Grimm monster Ursa has entered the chat.

- Jaune-y boy is saving Cardin. Good man!

- The tune playing in the background is the introductory song's instrumental! AGHHHHHHHHH! So gooooooood!!!

- Semblance must be special moves people can do. Ruby's happens to be speed. Weiss' are the stepping stones or glyphs. And Pyrrha has control over magnets. WoWie.

- Am not going to lie, my honest reaction was Ruby's line too. Pyrrha can control poles... 😂

- Pyrrha really knows what Jaune needs. She is so freaking good. Pyrrha; the person that you are. 🤩🤌🏻

- Jaune. I hope you never stop being a lovable idiot. At least Cardin will get off his back. Hopefully.

- YASSSSSSSS! Apologise. Am so glad Jaune can see the bad macho whatever nonsense.

- Awwww. He's actually asking for them classes now. Good on him! 👏🏻🤧

- The Grimm ending. Pun intended, 'cause the music was serious. Always good though.

Season 01 Episode 15: The Stray

- "Welcome to the world of new solutions."

- Vytal Festival is here. Weiss is harping on its importance by showing everyone how much of a Type A personality she truly is. Such me core.

- Blake knows why Weiss wants to be so nice to the students of Vacuo. Awwww! They know each other better now!

- Dust robberies be happening a lot. White Fang proves to be a point of contention between Blake and Weiss.

- Ahhhh. Weiss is prejudiced against the Faunus. At least Yang doesn't hold the same beliefs.

- Cue Faunus guy running off with a banana. He is good at Parkour though.

- Did he just wink at Blake? While in the process of running away?! Kudos for pulling that off!

- Weiss wants to observe him. So does Blake, mayhaps.

- Bye-bye blonde guy! Weiss falls on someone while chasing after him. The someone is Penny. Ahhhh.

- Team RWBY introduces themselves just the way their initials are ordered. Not before Yang checks in on Penny though. Head injuries are nothing to scoff at... That elbow budge from Blake made my day.

- The no look high-five Weiss and Ruby shared was so cool!

- Penny is back, Weiss is confused as to how she made it in front of them so fast. Her expression's priceless. 😆

- Awww! Penny wants to have a friend so bad. Thank you Ruby for going along with it. Even though the rest of your team definitely didn't want that. 😂

- Much banter. Weiss really needs to re-evaluate a lot of her stances. Blake to the rescue... Excellent points raised as well. No such thing as "pure evil."

- Holy hell. Weiss' childhood must have been horrible if she still cannot blame her family for it.

- This is how it comes out. Shite... Blake was also a part of White Fang. Should have seen it coming honestly.

- Wait. Will the White Fang partner with the bad people? Adam and Blake stole a lot of dust from the Schnee train. Oh Gods.

- Thank you Yang and Ruby for focusing on what's important. Blake has been gone for two days. 😢. Glad she has someone to lean on at least. Both her and Weiss must have a lot of trauma to deal with though. Fucking hell.

- Penny and the Faunus guy ending. Penny's symbol looks like the pointed end of a key. And the Faunus dude's happens to be a monkey like figure. Nice. The music is so somber and good.

Season 01 Episode 16: Black and White

- This must be the Blake and Weiss episode.

- "Victory is in a simple soul!"

- So this is Sun. He looks like a surfer dude. His character backdrop must be the Monkey King. Especially considering Sun Wukong is his name.

- Awww. Blake. No one should have to live like that. Having to resort to violence to receive equal rights. Fuck... Little her was so cute! But imagine needing to attend protests from such a young age to ensure people didn't treat her kind like lesser folks. Choosing to move away from a group that was succeeding in achieving what must have been a huge driving influence her entire life... Especially when people still discriminate against the Faunus. The fact that she didn't let hate consume her and set herself on a different path because she knew the other one wasn't right... Mad respect.

- Weiss. You have so much apologising to do. At least she has Ruby and Yang to guide her a little. Even if she will be snobbish about it every time.

- Penny is here! She is so sweet. I love her already. I am aware she ain't human. Hmmm. Her allusion could be Pinocchio. Something unlikely is living and all that.

- Blake likes tuna. LoLL!

- The wind carrying the tumbleweed at the perfect times... And Penny actually commenting on it. 😂👏🏻

- Yang and Weiss have paired off, leaving Ruby with the orange haired sweetheart.

- Ahhh. So the White Fang does steal dust. But not in such large scales. Gotcha.

- Sun is trying his best to help. Cool!

- Weiss has a really black and white view of the world. I too wish it was that simple sometimes.

- Awwww. Penny's really nailing the tail on the donkey with that one. Ruby too wants Blake to talk to them because they be friends. 🥺

- Blake's keeping watch at the Schnee crates. Sun stole apples. Witty back and forth and now a big flying machine. This would a great first date, if one were to ignore the circumstances.

- So it is the White Fang? ...And the bad Torchwick guy. Shikes. They are working together.

- Blake has him in a deadly position. And gets surrounded by the White Fang people. Shite.

- More airships, and Blake! The guy shot on the ground. Explosion was big enough that Ruby and Penny see it.

- Oh thank Gods, Blake's alright!

- Shootout, glad Sun's there. One vs many. The one wins.

- Blake and Torchwick showdown. Sun's stick-like weapon can turn into nunchucks AND a gun?! COOOOOL!

- Torchwick really shouldn't shoot Penny's friends. She is combat ready. 🤩👏🏻

- Fucking fuckity fuck. One woman army. Shikes. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing... At least the bad guys couldn't steal any dust. Bye-bye fancy ships! Your hasty retreat is much appreciated.

- Awwwwwwwww! Weiss has been thinking about it for twelve hours. Probably longer, am sure. She was worried. I should have been giving her more credit I guess. She be evolving.

- Weiss really is trying to be the best teammate. For everyone. 💖. It is difficult to unlearn years of bad rhetoric. Am glad she is giving it her all. Actually referred to Sun as a person too. 🫶🏻

- Penny has been picked up by someone she calls sir. Driving away now... Her time will come. As it should. She is adorable.

- Ozpin is monitoring Ruby?! Huh. I guess you cannot escape surveillance no matter the universe.

- Qrow, must be the uncle, sent him a message. "Queen has pawns." 🤔

- Hogwarts or not, that scenery is nothing to scoff at. Beacon truly looks amazing at night.

- This ending song is giving me an existential crisis. It's amazing though. Lullaby like.

- There's some person called Katie "Hot Wife" Newville in the credits... 😂👏🏻❤️‍🔥

- The song is picking up pace. This may be my favourite so far.

- Ooooooh! After credits scene. Torchwick got spooked by someone. Don't know his allusion still. Hmmm. This lady who scared him is the same person from the first episode. Them glowing eyes... Her name is Cinder? Subtitles be working overtime here. She has two henchpeople behind her. This is their ending. Can't figure out that symbol.
