RW Lion: Nederlandstalige DC comics in alle formaten

Een tijdje geleden schreef ik al eens een stukje over uitgeverij Nona Arte. Vandaag is het de beurt aan RW Lion, wat eigenlijk de natuurlijke opvolger is van Nona Arte 👉

Meer zelfs, het is eigenlijk ongeveer dezelfde uitgever. Eind 2011 werd het Nona Arte van Andrea Rivi opgekocht door de grotere Italiaanse uitgever RW EDIZIONE. Die had net ook de Europese licentie voor DC Comics binnengehaald. De ‘Distinguished Competition’ bleek nogal een taaie klant te zijn voor haar licentiehouders. Die mogen niets anders uitgeven dan DC-materiaal. Einde dus voor de Marvel comics bij Nona Arte. Maar het team achter Nona Arte, met oa. ook oude bekende vertalers als Peter De Bruin en Olav Beemer, bleef wel gewoon aan de slag. Zij verzorgden vanaf 2013 de ‘RW Lion’ imprint uitgaven. Zo herken je bij een aantal van de eerste uitgaven van RW, zoals '100 Bullets’ of 'Transmetropolitan’, de typische TPB manier van uitgeven van Nona Arte.

Vertigo

Er volgden echter al snel veel meer uitgaven. Doordat RW Lion een Europese speler was, en de printkosten dus mooi gespreid kon worden door grote oplages, werd er veel mogelijk. RW wou dan ook het maximale uit hun DC licentie halen. 

Opvallend was dat daarbij voor een groot stuk ook naar het meer volwassen materiaal van Vertigo werd gekeken. Zo verschenen luxe hardcover uitgaven van klassiekers als Sandman, Preacher en Fables. Dat leek aanvankelijk nogal een wilde gok. Veel lezers van Nederlandstalige comics stonden wat aarzelend tegenover deze (mooie maar ook vrij prijzige) uitgaven. Na eerdere mislukte pogingen met mature verhalen van oa. De Vliegende Hollander zat de schrik er dik in om weer met een onafgewerkte reeks te blijven zitten. Gelukkig bleek die vrees achteraf ongegrond en werden deze reeksen (op Preacher na) wél volledig uitgegeven. 

Superhelden…

Naast het meer volwassen Vertigo materiaal verscheen er ook zéér veel superhelden materiaal van DC. Dat bestond uit een mix van echte klassiekers zoals Batman Year One, Killing Joke, Green Lantern Rebirth en zelfs Ronin van Frank Miller. Daarnaast ook recenter materiaal van de New 52 reboot zoals Wonder Woman en véél Batman uitgaven. Dat alles verscheen steeds in hardcover, maar wel op verschillende formaten al naargelang het verhaal. Een aantal verhalen verscheen zelfs op het oversized 'absolute' formaat.

… en uitstapjes

De inhoudelijke keuzes over wat een vertaling kreeg en in welke vorm, gebeurde in Italië. Daar zaten al wel eens vreemde kronkels bij. Zo verscheen toegankelijk materiaal zoals de New 52 Batman reeks van Scot Snyder en Greg Capullo in een duur hardcover formaat. Het behoorlijk ontoegankelijke ‘Multiversity’ van Grant Morisson verscheen dan weer als goedkopere losse comics. 

Ook inhoudelijk waren er soms uitgaven bij die, hoewel op zich wel goed en leuk, commerciëel toch niet altijd zo verstandig leken. Denk maar aan het eerder onbekende Vertigo verhaal ‘Ergens een God’. Of ‘Black Orchid’, dat in de jaren ‘80 al eens vertaald werd door Baldakijn, maar ook toen zonder succes. Zelfs bij de superhelden waren niet alle keuzes even logisch. Zo is de 'New 52 Green Lantern' écht geen goed instappunt voor nieuwe lezers.

En dan was er nog de plots nieuwe vertaling van ‘Hellboy’ en ‘Sin City’. Die waren nog maar enkele jaren eerder vertaald door De Vliegende Hollander. Wie echter hoopte dat het gewoon om de laatste deeltjes van die eerder niet afgewerkte reeksen ging, kwam bedrogen uit. Er werd opnieuw begonnen bij nummer 1 én in een ander formaat. Niet zo slim bleek al snel. 

Knappe hardcover uitgaven

Allemaal heel fraai materiaal. Het levert een mooi stukje boekenkast op 😎. Ik moet zeggen dat ik ook écht wel blij was met deze uitgaven destijds. Vroeger was ik stiekem altijd jaloers op al die prachtige Franstalige vertalingen van comics in knappe hardcovers. Nu was dus ook de Nederlandstalige markt eindelijk aan de beurt. 

Foutjes en ergernissen

Toch liep niet alles van een leien dakje. Zo kwam er wel eens een foutje voor in het drukwerk. ‘Batman: Jaar Eén’ verscheen bijvoorbeeld per ongeluk deels in kleur, deels in zwart-wit. Daardoor was een dure terugroepactie en herdruk nodig. Het team vertalers werd ook uitgebreid met Hans Pols en Arco Van Os. En ook daar sloop al wel eens een foutje in het vertaalwerk. Allemaal niets onoverkomelijks, maar in een moeilijke markt en met relatief dure uitgaven is dat natuurlijk best te vermijden. 

Hoewel het management van RW in handen bleef van Andrea Rivi in Italië, was er uiteraard ook wel een ‘chef’ in Nederland. Die werd echter overladen met taken. Van het regelen van de distributie tot het voeren van marketing en communicatie. Dat is natuurlijk wel érg veel werk voor één persoon. En hoewel dat allemaal met de beste bedoelingen gebeurde, liep er onvermijdelijk wel eens iets mis. Zo liep de distributie bijvoorbeeld niet altijd optimaal. En er was ook eens een misverstand met een niet door DC goedgekeurde promotieposter. 

Vermoedelijk door tijdsgebrek kwam er van een échte website ook nooit veel in huis en gebeurde de communicatie van RW Lion met de Nederlandstalige fans vooral via Facebook en het forum van ‘De Getekende Reep’. Overigens wel knap dat ‘Bernard van RW' daar heel openlijk durfde communiceren. Oók over wat niet goed ging. 

Begin van het einde 

In 2016 besloot oprichter en boegbeeld Andrea Rivi RW vaarwel te zeggen. Dat had een grote impact op de uitgeverij. Zo gebeurden er heel wat herschikkingen binnen het bedrijf zelf en werden er ook heel wat contracten herbekeken. DC zelf nam de touwtjes ook veel strakker in handen van haar vertalingen. Dat leidde uiteindelijk tot een grote bijsturing van de koers van RW Lion. Waar ze eerder voor véél uitgaven gingen, werd dat aantal sterk teruggedraaid. Er werd ook besloten om volop in te zetten op de nieuwe ‘Rebirth’ reboot van DC. Dat maakte dat een aantal lopende ‘New 52’ reeksen zoals Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman en Green Lantern werden afgebroken om meteen door te springen naar ‘Rebirth’. Dat bleek geen te beste keuze, want veel lezers bleven zo wat verweesd achter met onafgewerkte series. Daarnaast was het voor de Nederlandse tak van het bedrijf ook knokken om de laatste delen van de Vertigo reeksen zoals Fables en Sandman er nog door te krijgen, want het hoofdbureau wou daar eigenlijk mee kappen. Voor Sandman en Preacher is dat helaas niet meer gelukt en is van beide reeksen het laatste deel nooit verschenen, al was het achter de schermen wel zo goed als klaar. Zonde.

In 2019 viel dan definitief het doek voor RW Lion. Het contract met DC liep af en werd vanaf 2020 voor de Nederlandse markt overgenomen door Dark Dragon Books. Hoewel de 6 jaar met RW best woelig waren, leverden ze toch een groot aantal zeer mooie uitgaven op. Met meer dan 230 titels op hun naam hebben ze zeker een waardevolle bijdrage geleverd aan de wereld van de Nederlandstalige comic.

Laios - Strength. Overcoming difficulty through fortitude. The traditional image reminds me of him choking Falin, and if that wasn't an incredible display of strength (physical, mental, spiritual) I don't know what is.

Chilchuck - I've seen that card that made him the Emperor and he genuinely works. He's both a family man (divorce notwithstanding) and an authority in his community. He also acts as a guide to his younger coworkers to some degree.

Senshi - the Empress. Look at me. He's nourishing, he's creative, he's capable of turning the sterile dungeon into a fertile source of food. Hes got his big senos de hombre. Hes coparenting with Chilchuck. Gender is nothing.

Marcella - the High Priestess. In the end the "harbinger of secret knowledge" aspect won me over to this one.

Falin - the XIII - Death. Death as transformation and reconstruction, as the end of a cycle and start of another. Something has happened. You will go on but you will never be the same again.

Kabru - this one was HARD AS HELL. In the end I choose the Hanged Man. Choosing the difficult way over the easy one. Suffering for the greater good. Looking at things from a different perspective than everyone else.

The Winged Lion - the Devil. This one is just a low hanging fruit tbh like... hes pretty much a perfect match.

The Canaries - the Hierophant. Here to enforce magical rules with any means necessary, custodians of knowledge and tradition.

Mithrun - the Tower. The fall from grace. A castle built on sand cannot last.

From a fairytale I felt no need to summarize to one I probably should:

Snow White and Rose Red is totally separate from the much more famous Snow White story.  In this one, an old woman has two rosebushes, one white and one red, and two daughters.  Literally the whole description of them is that Snow White is like a white rose, and Rose Red is like a red one, so they tend to be drawn as a pale platinum blonde and either a brunette with rosy cheeks or a redhead.  In the middle of winter a giant fucking bear turns up at their house and basically settles in – lies around in front of the fire while the kids beat the snow off his fur and play with him like he’s a big dog.  In the summer he disappears to protect his treasure, and the girls go wandering around the woods, repeatedly saving a very rude dwarf who’s always in some kind of treasure-related trap and needs saving by way of cutting off bits of his beard.

Eventually the dwarf threatens the girls directly, the bear kills him, we discover that the bear was actually a prince cursed by said dwarf and he handily has a brother.  I particularly appreciate that in the Grimm version we end with ‘EVENTUALLY, Snow White married the prince and Rose Red married his brother’.  Thank god for one fairytale that remembers the lead girls are children – I’m going to choose to assume that the enchanted prince was also super young, please feel free to assume that with me.

Anyway, the RWS strength card is a woman holding a lion’s mouth closed, and I’m a fan of a slightly different version, where it’s about lack of fear and friendship and a little girl feeling totally safe braiding ribbons into a bear’s fur.

1: Esse is the god of creation! (BUT not life! Big difference here, similar to cosmos isn’t god of death she’s god of destruction) Its the counterpart to cosmos :3 and maybe I might tie it into being the tree of harmony spirit or filling a similar role, basically just the rws equivalent of a more traditional “god” figure think kinda like how Pokemon has arceus mlp rw has esse. It’s a calygreyhound (a mythological creature that’s usually described as having the head of a wildcat/lynx, antelope body , bird legs and hooves, lion tail, and sometimes horns/antlers or wings but that depends on the depiction) I took more from the lynx with antlers/wings side of it, if I draw a full body I might toy with the claws and hooves combo !

2: (I think you mixed up the names there lol I’ve not done anything s ember (yet?)) but yes! The school will be a small timeskip! Not in the Future future like from the last episode, but more like a middle ground between that and say s7, I wanna use the school to let twilight prepare for princess duties (being away from her friends/doing things on her own + deal with students (subjects) + paperwork)

The Crow Tarot By Mj Cullinane 🐦‍⬛

TW: Dead Crows (Death and Ten of Swords, the Four of Swords), Blood and internal organ like hearts (Devil and Three of Swords) very detailed like a human heart so if you’re squeamish just a warning!

I thought I wasn’t going to like this deck because I’m not so into all animal decks and the art isn’t my favorite. But I wanted a deck that represents deity work and most of the deities I was connected to had a Corvus bird associated with them like Odin, Lucifer, Apollo, etc. plus Ravens especially are like messenger birds.

It’s not dark at all but it’s not light I can’t describe it but the best way I can describe it’s realistic in the messages. Also it feels like I’m not talking or getting a message from one entity it feels like a collective answer from a community or group. It’s a deck that I love especially when I need a quick helpful response from an entity or spirit.

It does have a unique spread which I tried out which was lovely! A tarot spread that outlines a Crow. The guidebook is small but it gives good information keywords for the major arcana including elements but minors are small paragraphs. The system is RWS which I’m the most familiar with. I should mention there is other animals like fish, horses, lions, other birds for the courts and some major cards.

Cardstock:

It’s stiff but flexible, I can riffle shuffle but hard time bridging the cards.

Rating is 4.5/5 on shuffling, depending on your hands the cards are like size of oracle cards not big that I can’t hold it I have small hands it’s bigger than the regular standard RWS tarot card but not too big that you can’t hold them and shuffle them.

Art:

Not my overall favorite but it’s definitely unique and I can understand the symbols and the crows are visible but some cards it’s hard to tell what suite it is like the Three of Pentacles I keep mistaken for Three of Cups but it’s not bad I’m just not use to the depiction. The Roman numerals can be confusing but I can easily tell what card is what base upon the card’s scene.

Rating: 3/5 overall its unique and quite intuitive but I can see why people may not like the artwork it can be overwhelming and an eye soar. But I can bear the art for the message and that’s what important for me.

My overall rating:

8/10 I feel comfortable with that rating, I absolutely love this deck and the energy is so friendly but it’s trustful and genuine.

I thought the picture frame was suspect the second the friend gifted it to Maya. So for the friend to immediately explain it had a hidden camera was an unexpected early reveal. I don't trust anyone. Even the toddler is unreliable lol.
