Romy Vager is an Adelaide-born Melbourne-based singer/songwriter with a remarkable backstory: Vager was a teenaged goth kid runaway, who left Adelaide and headed east to Melbourne. Upon her arrival in Melbourne, she joined her first band Sooky La La, an act that specialized in material rooted in anger and discordance. Unsurprisingly, Sooky La La was largely misunderstood, routinely cleared out…

Listed: Cable Ties
Tumblr media
Cable Ties, from Melbourne, formed in the mid-teens and has one self-titled and a clutch of singles and splits in its catalogue so far. A trio, the band is made up of guitarist/singer Jenny McKechnie, bassist Nick Brown and drummer Shauna Boyle. Band members are active advocates for women’s and LGBTQ rights. McKechnie co-founded Wet Lips, a Melbourne festival focused on inclusion of female, gay and non-binary musicians, and both she and Boyle volunteer for Girls Rock, an organization that promotes opportunity for women, trans and gender diverse musicians. Jennifer Kelly reviewed their second album recently for Dusted, observing that, “The easy thing would be to compare McKechnie’s vibrato-zinging vocals with those of Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker or her verbal agility to Courtney Barnett, but the blunt force and agile violence of the music, brings to mind post-punk bands like the Wipers, Protomartyr and Eddy Current.” Shauna Boyle contributed this cooking-themed list.
Ten songs to listen to while cooking vegan mac and cheese on an iso-Saturday night
I was chatting to a group of my mates online and I posed the question, “what kind of list would you like to read about right now?” We’ve all been discussing the elaborate meals we’ve been cooking and the bizarre TV shows we’ve been bingeing on so this list feels like something everyone could get behind right now. This mac and cheese is famous in my house. These are some songs that I hope will help to evoke the feeling of one of my most cherished and comforting meals.
Orange Juice–“Rip It Up”
youtube
Put this song on first to get limbered up while you’re prepping your ingredients. This song never fails to prop up my mood – there’s something about the rubber-y bass line and Edwyn Collins’ earnest declaration of his favorite song (with a cute nod via the single note solo in Buzzcocks’ “Boredom”) that melts my heart every time.
Dave Edmunds–“Down Down Down”
youtube
I found this song on a playlist recently and it was a delightful treat surrounded by a bunch of familiar suggestions. Sometimes you just need a little upbeat dad-rock for your evening. There’s something about the weird key changes towards the end of the song that are so unexpected but intriguing.
RVG–“Christian Neurosurgeon”
youtube
The most recent single from fellow Melbournians and a band that Cable Ties have always been huge fans of. This has an elegant simplicity to it that has literally drilled itself into my brain. The sound of the drill over the track might have something to do with it?
Pylon–“Cool”
youtube
By now hopefully you should hopefully have some progress with your cheese and it’s starting to get fun. This song is matched with my excitement levels as you start to imagine the meal ahead. A few jogs on the spot aligned with the verse riff will help it along.
Ty Segall–“Everyone’s A Winner”
youtube
Needless to say we’re all winners but this song will make you believe it. You deserve it! You’ve worked hard for this meal and it’s gonna be yours! I love a bit of grit in my guitar tones generally so this version of the Hot Chocolate hit is so satisfying.
The The–“Uncertain Smile”
youtube
Did you ever feel like a song can really give you that helping hand that you might need every now and again (ironically given the lyrical content is pretty dark)? If you ever needed a song to dance to in your kitchen, one of whimsy and sway, this is here for you any time you need.
The B52’s–“52 Girls”
youtube
Well you need to remember that you gotta celebrate the people in your life who make these meals special. Who made you your first mac and cheese? Was it one of these 52 girls? This song is also special to Cable Ties as it was covered by our amazing friends Georgi and Kim who play in a band called Shrimpwitch. Go listen to them!
Jen Cloher–“Strong Woman”
youtube
Jen Cloher is an artist who has been a supporter of Cable Ties from very early on in our career – so much so that she took us along on tour with her in Europe. Singing this on stage with Jen will forever be one of my favorite memories and hearing this song always reminds me of the joy and pride I felt up there. Much like my cooking.
Billy Idol–“Dancing With Myself”
youtube
You can’t expect to make a meal like this and not hear just a little bit of cheese? But look, we all secretly love this song and to be honest you are on your own so no-one cares. There are NO guilty pleasures.
Sheer Mag–“Expect The Bayonet”
youtube
You did it! You should be proud of yourself and your amazing skills. If anyone tries to tell you otherwise (or decides to steal your leftovers out of the fridge) then you know to steer clear. This song will always help me to turn off the negative talk and leave me with a feeling of resilience, tenacity and strength.

RVG- FERAL (FIRE RECORDS)
Tumblr media
Also known as the Romy Vager Group named after it’s fearless leader who crawled out of Melbourne, Australia in the last decade with some great ideas and better tunes (Reuben Bloxham and Marc Nolte round out the trio). This one comes three years after the bands 2017 debut A Quality of Mercy and ups the ante, for sure.  On this sophomore effort you’ll know from the first 30 seconds of the first song, “Alexandra” whether you like it or not. It’s like it Grant McLennan or David McComb (RIP to both, two Aussie greats there) had the Bad Seeds backing them and Vager seems like she’s singing as if her life depended on it (maybe it does?).  She feels everything and so do we listeners. The guitar playing on “Christian Neurosurgeon” fits in the Marr-esque category and is one of the best songs on here while another marvelous song (with a great title) is  “Little Sharkie & the White Pointer Sisters.” Vager doesn’t seem to have any problem coming up with yet another great hook on each song as “Help Somebody” and the stunningly gorgeous “I Used to Love You” both knock it out of the park. Someone said of this record- “Both a cry for help and a call to action.” And there you have it (and kudos to Victor VanVugt for a stellar production job). Good? Very, very good.     www.firerecords.com

Singles reviews - FIRE special
https://www.firerecords.com/
A super batch of new music from FIRE recordings recently landed on my doorstep and, in summary, I’ve captured the essences here, as we edge towards Spring and warmer weather. Singles marked out of 10.
First up, MODERN STUDIES, with an impressive cut of substance. ‘Run For Cover’ is darker than Roxy Music and punchier than David Byrne. Out in May, as is the four piece’s 3rd album, ‘The Weight Of The Sun’. This single and album should do really well, as the music world at the moment is crying out for different sounds, not the same old formulas, and this wonderful band certainly provides an antidote to all that.
Rating : 8.5/10
Next, the new one from RVG, which has very jangly guitars and flippant (in a good way) vocals. ‘Christian Neurosurgeon’ is taken from their new album, ‘Feral’, released on 24 April. It’s catchy, indie, and fans of Iggy Pop, Julian Cope and The Cure are likely to embrace this new music with attitude. As the Rolling Stone (magazine) say, “Easily one of the most vital bands on the Aussie scene today”. I’d like to add to their quote, “ Next : The World”.
Rating : 9/10
Spinning around to ‘Closer’ from LAS KELLIES - and my first impressions are, cool, and if John Peel wasn’t gigging in that great radio studio in the sky, he’d surely be playing this dreamy-indie-pop on his Radio One show. But of course, essentially BBC 6 Music , and Lauren Laverne in particular, have taken on JP’s mantle, and so it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if they immediately playlist this, as we all look forward to the new album its taken from, ‘Suck This Tangerine’. I can assure you this mellow groove does not suck!
Rating : 10/10
BRIGID MAE POWER is bringing us her splendid new album in June, but ahead of that, is this single, ‘On A City Night’. The title refrain is oft repeated, so becomes a little repetitive to hear, but she has succeeded in singing sweet torch & twang (in the style of a Laura Cantrell) over a backing of interesting twilight chord manoeuvres. So pleasant enough, and like the name of her long player it keeps its ‘Head Above The Water.
Rating : 7.5/10
Finally, we have THROWING MUSES. They first hit the music scene in 1981 and continued until 1997, before relaunching in 2003. ‘Dark Blue’ is a thumper of a tune from Kristin Hersh, David Narcizo and Bernard Georges. All three combine well and make quite a noise - it’s a precursor to their new album, ‘Sun Racket’ due out on 22 May, which is the band's first new album for seven years. Muses followers’ will finally be able to scratch... that 7 year itch!
Rating : 8/10

RVG — Feral (Fire)
Tumblr media
youtube
Back in 2017, you couldn’t turn on Melbourne community radio without hearing songs from RVG’s cracking debut album, A Quality of Mercy — and for good reason. The band’s sound blends the immediacy of classic Australian guitar pop, such as The Go-Betweens and The Church, with the moody edge of indie bands such as Echo & The Bunnymen and Siouxsie & The Banshees. Three years later we have Feral, and despite what its title suggests, RVG’s second album sounds like it’s had its claws clipped. Romy Vager is an engaging presence, as ever, yet A Quality of Mercy’s blueprint has been smoothed out, creating a sound that’s shinier and simpler, but with fewer rough edges to catch the ear.
Though the production on Feral feels like a step forward towards a warmer, brighter sound, there are some odd structural similarities with its predecessor. After opening with one of its strongest cuts in “Alexandra,” Feral’s second track, “Asteroid,” is a dead ringer for “Cause and Effect,” the second track on A Quality of Mercy. On “Christian Neurosurgeon” we hear the sound of a bone drill, harking back to the dial-up modem sound effect used on “IBM.” And Feral’s closer, “Photograph,” echoes A Quality of Mercy’s “That’s All,” where the band slows things down and stretches out. On the one hand, these feel like knowing nods to what’s come before; on the other, they feel a little like a band running short on fresh songwriting ideas.
That said, when RVG get it right, the results are deeply affecting. Standout single “I Used To Love You” deploys the band’s arsenal with economy and precision: two electric guitars playing slightly different voicings of the same chords, the rhythm section driving hard down the middle, Romy Vager’s voice bleeding into an aching howl at the ends of phrases. There’s a definite magic at work when the directness and familiarity of the chord changes is shadowed by deeply pained lyrical sentiments and powerful vocal delivery from Vager.
The weaker moments — “Little Sharky & The White Pointer,” “Prima Donna” and “The Baby & The Bottle” — could easily have been excised for a sharper listen. It’s not that anything here is cringe-inducing, it’s just that because the band’s sound is so straightforward, the songs need a little spark to make them stand out. While the main tune of “Help Somebody” is relatively lightweight, the song is redeemed by a long, spaced-out coda, which points to a potentially fruitful new direction for the band.
