Audi - RS3 Sportback: Birth
This short but highly visually interesting ad by BBH includes imagery from the iconic sports car by Audi, the R8. The R8 is gradually dismantled, while sounds from the car’s engine can be heard. The revs of the R8 show how powerful the R8 is as well as all the technology being shown around the car to dismantle it. Behind the car there is a dreary tunnel with a window showing that this is highly secretive and technical.
From the dark outset, you can tell this ad was designed to attract car lovers and speed freaks alike, although no driving is shown. As the ad carries on it becomes apparent that the car is as the title of the ad suggests, is giving birth, to the new RS3 Sportsback.
This is highly suggestive that the RS3 holds all the power of the R8 but being smaller and likely less expensive as well as the better option. The RS3 is seen in a stunning red with black and carbon fibre accents. The car then speeds towards the viewer and screen fades to white.
I feel although this advert is missing crucial points of a successful car ad, although very visual the ad gives no insight to how the car drives, feels and although it is suggestively a sports car, it seems naïve to think it is purely for race car drivers. Adverts like these show no concept of quality apart for appearance. The ad is purely received on previous ideas on Audi which limits the ads and cars audience, for example if someone hated the look feel and idea of the Audi R8 they are less likely to be interested in its “child” even if being a completely different car altogether.
In conclusion, although this car is a personal favourite and one of my favourite ad agencies being BBH London, I feel this ad is highly lacklustre. If it were to be 1 minute longer showing it driving in everyday situations with a contrast of pushing it to its limits, although this would in some ways ruin the surrealism of the ad itself, it would appeal to a much wider audience, that of which probably isn’t reached by the “Birth” aspect of this campaign.
