“CHURCH MAKES PLEA FOR MEN'S CLOTHING,” The Province (Vancouver). March 14, 1931. Page 4. ---- Welfare Department, First United, Has Application From Many Men. ---- St. Patrick's Day will be observed with a special service at First United Church, when Rev. Andrew Roddan will give an address appropriate to the occasion, and at the close will give a talk on "In search of Ireland." This second address will be illustrated with beautiful views. Special music will be rendered by the choir and the soloists will be Mrs. L. Todd and Miss Margaret Wright.
The welfare department is in urgent need of cast-off clothing for men. Many of the unemployed single men now leaving for the prairies appeal to First Church for clothing, and the demands on the stock and funds are so incessant that the department is compelled to refuse assistance to many who appear worthy. A phone to the church, Sey. 6266, will bring the wagon to the home.

Charles Chaplin and Martha Raye in Monsieur Verdoux (Charles Chaplin, 1947)
Cast: Charles Chaplin, Mady Correll, Allison Roddan, Robert Lewis, Audrey Betz, Martha Raye, Ada May, Isobel Elsom, Marjorie Bennett, Helene Heigh, Margaret Huffman, Marilyn Nash, Irving Bacon. Screenplay: Charles Chaplin, based on an Idea by Orson Welles. Cinematography: Roland Totheroh. Art direction: John Beckman. Film editing: Willard Nico. Music: Charles Chaplin. At the end of Monsieur Verdoux, Charles Chaplin, in the title role, walks away toward his execution by guillotine, just as his Little Tramp character used to walk away toward the horizon in his earlier films. It's a richly ironic moment, not just because Chaplin is parodying the endings of his other movies, but also because it would come to symbolize the beginning of the end of his career. He would make three more films, only one of which, Limelight (1952), would attract an audience (mainly in Europe) and earn some critical respect. Of the other two, A King in New York (1957) was not even released in the United States until 1973, and although The Countess From Hong Kong (1967) did get American distribution, it was generally panned even by critics inclined to favor Chaplin and was a major box office flop. Monsieur Verdoux is a key work in its revelation of Chaplin's strengths and weaknesses. His strengths are still there: He was, when he wanted to be, a very funny actor, and there is one scene -- Verdoux and Annabella (Martha Raye) in a rowboat -- that is among the most hilarious sequences ever filmed. His weaknesses stemmed from his desire to be more than funny: to make statements about the way he saw the world. The ending of The Great Dictator (1940) was marred when he shifted from satire to sermon, and the rather muzzy anticapitalism expressed by Verdoux in the final scenes strikes us today as banal. Unfortunately, in 1947 it struck many as worse than that. In the increasingly heated anticommunist fervor of the day it was at least heresy, at worst treason. Monsieur Verdoux was picketed and banned and eventually withdrawn from circulation in the United States, not to be seen here until 1964. It confused most of the critics in 1947 with its shifts in tone and its rather old-fashioned mise-en-scène and cutting, but it had its defenders, chief among them James Agee, who wrote a long, impassioned multipart essay for The Nation defending the film. "I love and revere the film as deeply as any I have ever seen," Agee wrote, "and believe that it is high among the great works of this century." Not many people would go that far today. Monsieur Verdoux has its longueurs and its unfortunate wanderings into Chaplin's particular brand of sentimentality, especially the wheelchair-bound wife and adorable child. It betrays Chaplin's perennial weakness for the pretty girl in his casting of the wooden Marilyn Nash in what seems to have been intended as a key role but which fizzles because it's awkwardly written and performed. Even the title role is inconsistently written and performed: Chaplin's dapper Verdoux suddenly turns into a slapstick clown and just as suddenly back into the suave and sinister serial killer, undercutting the high-minded pseudo-Shavian irony of his final apologia: "As for being a mass killer, does not the world encourage it? Is it not building weapons of destruction for the sole purpose of mass killing? Has it not blown unsuspecting women and little children to pieces? And done it very scientifically? As a mass killer, I am an amateur by comparison." Monsieur Verdoux feels something like a scene from Act IV in the tragicomedy that was Chaplin's life. If the first three acts were about his rise to success, despite controversy over his personal life and his politics, the fourth act finds his artistic instincts failing him and the controversies forcing him into exile. Only in the fifth act does the adulation that once surrounded him revive.

The English name for this creature is frowned upon over here. An old hang up from a more seafairing time when it was considered bad luck to call certain land animals by their true name whilst out at sea. Local socially acceptable alternatives for the superstitious also include longtail, joey, ringie, queerfella, iron fella and the Manx Gaelic - roddan. Kenny: ‘Light-hearted joke’ at Kennedy Awards ended in trouble
Kenny: ‘Light-hearted joke’ at Kennedy Awards ended in trouble
The Australian Financial Review’s Michael Roddan made a “light-hearted joke” at the NRMA Kennedy Awards last night, but apparently, it was “too much of an insult,” according to Sky News host Chris Kenny. While receiving an award for financial journalism, Mr Roddan made a joke about the Kennedys being the “Bogan Walkleys”. Mr Kenny said the crowd seemed to think the joke was “pretty funny,” but…

Today, me and Joanna visited the RSA New Contemporaries 2018 exhibition. There was a lot of great work, with my favourites being Alexandra Roddan, Edith Pritchett and Alan Aitken. It was an interesting experience to visit this kind of exhibition with a friend and discussing all the pieces. We have liked completely different works, with mine being mainly drawings/ paintings with crazy colours and Joanna liking more architectural/ construction pieces in dark colours.
The only thing I was not too sure about is the amount of work displayed. There was so much work, I could only concentrate on the first couple of them. Later, as we visited rooms and rooms full of art, I felt tired and could not engage with the artworks as much as I would like to. Sometimes, I feel like there should be only a few pieces of artwork during an exhibition, so that the viewer does not feel overwhelmed by the amount and variety of art.
But overall, it was a nice way to spend an afternoon, and even better, the exhibition is free on Mondays!

In 2013, Michael Roddan interviewed Dr Elspeth McInnes as part of a feature on myth-making and misogyny for The Citizen. In response to the question of "what about the men" following discussions of women's experience of violence, Dr McInnes replied, "Thank God you asked! I mean, it's a big problem, isn't it? One that no-one is really talking about.
"How do we get men to stop hurting other men, women and children? Like, oh my God, it'd be a different planet."
In a society that increasingly discards facts for feelings, it's easy for people to say that violence is a crime equally perpetrated by men and women, but the statistics simply don't support that statement.
As Jane Gilmore outlined, the 2013/14 Victoria Police crime stats on offenders showed that men were the perpetrators of:
87 per cent of homicides
98 per cent of sexual assaults
83 per cent of non-sexual assaults
90 per cent of robberies
92 per cent of abductions
The pettiest of pedants might argue against the use of four-year-old statistics to demonstrate current social trends, but a more rational mindset dictates the extreme unlikelihood of these numbers being totally overturned in such a short space of time. We are not seeing dramatic levels of retaliation against men occurring at the hands of women, nor are women responsible for the homicides of men in anywhere near equal numbers.
None of this is to pit men and women against each other or to characterise men as innately violent, no matter what outraged opponents might say. It is merely to point out the statistical reality of harm done to men and experienced by them; and to ask this vital question: how can that harm be minimised to the best of our ability so that men stop wounding or killing each other?
Because this is the fundamental truth, and it's pointless to continue looking away and pretending it doesn't exist.
A small proportion of men might be responsible for the majority of the world's worst violence, but they are men nonetheless and their actions have devastating consequences for the people and extended communities of those they harm - a considerable proportion of which will be other men.
It isn't misandry to want to talk about how we can prevent our sons from being punched in the back of the head or beaten while out having a celebration. Nor is it an attack on men to encourage gentle behaviour between men while critiquing the laddish displays of machismo that are so often heralded in this country as an example of red blooded masculinity.
Surely enough families have been woken in the middle of the night with the news their sons are on life support in hospital? And what of the families of those boys and men who put them there? Which do you think it would be more devastating to be – the parent of the boy killed by a single punch, or the parent of the boy who killed him?

Rev. A. Roddan and others distributing food to unemployed men at the City Dump, Vancouver. September 1931.
The topmost photos show Roddan giving out food, while the remainder are a kind of ‘ethnography’ of the shantytown, showing different huts and ‘types’ of unemployed men. The bottommost photo is probably the most ‘public relations’ of these, with Roddan jovially talking with a photogenic unemployed worker.
More information on Roddan here.
