apa² pun aku nak cerita masalah aku atau luahkan, mesti je aku kena cop kat dahi sebagai "beggar" atau pengemis. Aku luahkan kadar nak luahkan, bukan nak desperate mintak tolong ke apa. Ye, ada je mas aku luahkan pasal kawan aku rugi RM2k tapi korang dok label aku ni mengemis je kat korang. Ok fine, least you could do is just berdoa and have faith nanti dapatlah apa kita nak. Korang elok je bila kena timpa masalah kat korang, cite je kat aku and aku cheer up korang and have faith in korang, kalau aku cite masalah aku, dikena cop mengemis kaki rayu. Some friendship lah korang ni, semua nak puaskan pride, wrath and ego korang memasing. Ok takpe, aku just biarkan friendship aku run its course. Tak mati pun aku takde korang. In the end, sapa je yang meroyan? Korang kan?

witch's heart is a relatively modern release and very impressive for how much it pulls off in RM2K even though it uses extenders

rpgmaker without extenders (especially before it let you use anything besides the event system) is such an interesting experiment in how much you can expect someone to put up with before they either go completely insane or start constructing the Intuitive Visual Programming Language(tm) equivalent of piranesi's imaginary prisons

The Stairway

Hello, and welcome to “RPG Maker One-Hour Game Review #4,” where I’m exploring The Stairway, a visual novel by quiesphere. 

Engine: RPG Maker 2000

Background: I’m a sucker for monochrome. I’m also a sucker for games that take place in internal worlds and dreamscapes. The Stairway is my Kryptonite.

Overview: In The Stairway, you play as Stella, a young woman who thinks her friend just ditched her at a party; so she climbs a staircase into a mysterious world, and this leads her to the person she’s looking for.

Immersion: The music in this game is gently captivating. It matches perfectly with the game’s aesthetic: Alice-in-Wonderlandesque brightness compare-contrasted with nighttime mellowness. Different theme songs match the color schemes, and these themes reoccur in a variety of styles, so that an auditory narrative grows.

The NPCs are also loveable. Their weirdness pulls you in, and their strange, butterfly-effected requests propel you towards Stella’s final destination. 

Combine these elements together, and The Stairway is an authentic and compelling story, not to mention it’s free.

Takeaway: This is my favorite RPG Maker game so far! While I’ve enjoyed the other games I’ve reviewed, I felt shifted by the story of The Stairway. The ending creates a poignant burst of feelings that makes your soul snap in the right direction, like you’ve just gone to an emotional chiropractor. 

When I go back to Imaginary Friends, Ara Fell, and Wayfarers, I imagine their endings will touch me, too, as all good stories do. They had fantastic beginnings. I just need to play them to end-game.

Which is where I come to the neatest part: 

The Stairway is a short game—so it delivers its intense story in a one-hour night—kind of like reading a favorite short story. For me, it’s like reading Weir’s “The Egg.” And I’m inspired. If I like writing short stories, maybe I’d like making short games, too.

I’d recommend carving a night to experience Stella’s whimsical journey yourself.
