That the Daily Telegraph regarded this as the day's third most important news item - more important than anything in politics, more important than the latest self pitying bollocks from the Sussexes, more important than the latest football mini-riot - says it all.

Goodbye any lingering hope of a Smiths reunion, and perhaps it's better that way.

But fifty nine is far, far too young to be going. Goodbye Andy, and thanks for the music that will be remembered and enjoyed long after we've all turned to dust.

Let's leave things with the bassline that inspired a billion indie copycats.

Andy Rourke (The Smiths) (1964-2023)

As one part of the rhythm section of The Smiths (along side Mike Joyce) his basslines gave the band a danceable groove to the glitter of Marr and the melancholy of Morrissey. A Manchester lad to be missed by those who remember the better days of 1980s. RIP.
