In Memoriam: Blackie Onassis (1966 - 2023)

John Rowan, (1966 – 2023) drummer for ’90s Chicago rock band Urge Overkill who performed under the name Blackie Onassis, died on Tuesday in Los Angeles. He was 57. A spokesperson for the band confirmed his death to The Times. No cause of death was provided. Remembering Blackie Onassis 1966-2023

Drummer Blackie Onassis has died at 57. He was the drummer for Urge Overkill from 1991 to 2004. He was also the subject of their song "Today is Blackie's Birthday".

Chicago's Urge Overkill blew up during the Alternative Nation in the early 90s and their 1993 album Saturation was phenomenal! I re-listened to that album last week because there was a recent op-ed hailing it as the best album of the 90s on it's 30th anniversary. I wouldn't say it was the best of the 90s, but definitely one of the best of 1993. The drumming was solid and Blackie even sang on "dropout". The follow up album Exit the Dragon wasn't as good, but had some nuggets. The band reached their peak in 1994 when their cover of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon" was featured in Pulp Fiction. Not only was it on the soundtrack, but it played a role in the film itself as Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) turns on the song on reel-to-reel and dances to the song before she discovers Vincent Vega's stash.

Former Urge Overkill Drummer Blackie Onassis Dies at 57

Former Urge Overkill drummer Blackie Onassis died June 13, the band said.

The drummer, born John Rowan, was 57. No cause was given.

“Urge Overkill is saddened to report that Blackie has passed away,” the group, which reformed in the early 2000s without Onassis, said.

“Please respect our privacy at this time. We are sending much love to his family and all his fans. We know he will be missed.”

Onassis joined Urge Overkill in 1991 and left in 1996. He subsequently joined Motorcycle Boy before exiting the music business.

“RIP to … Blackie Onassis,” the group wrote on Facebook. “We had some fun times during his brief stint with us in the late-’90.”
