Just when we thought 2020 could not get worse... Rishi Ji was one of the best artists the country had ever seen. His battle with cancer was nothing short of inspiring. Despite being diagnosed with a terminal illness, he continued to maintain his charismatic presence on-screen. He was one of Bollywood’s legends. The void he has left shall never be filled. We will miss you, sir. We shall continue to love and cherish you. RIP Rishi Kapoor Sir 🙏🏻

In The Memory of Rishi Kapoor
On April 30th of 2020, Bollywood faced another loss after Irrfan Khan and this time it was Rishi Kapoor. This unexpected coincidence is questionable, but nevertheless I will celebrate his life and career instead of mourning similar to Irrfan.
Long Story Short
Rishi Kapoor was from a privileged family. The Kapoors have been in the film industry for the longest time now and now it was time for Raj Kapoor’s youngest to make his debut. He made his debut in the 1970 cult classic Mera Naam Joker as his father’s younger self. Three years later, he made his lead debut in Bobby, which was a super-hit and earned him a Filmfare Aaward for Best Actor. The rest of the decade, he starred in movies like Amar Akbar Anthony and Khel Khel Mein, which possessed similar light-hearted tones. In 1980, he starred in the iconic Karz, which was much more different than what he was used to. Although the movie was a flop at the time, the movie later gained a fandom and inspired some movies in the future (such as Om Shanti Om and Karzzz). His later movies like Chandni and Bol Radha Bol featured him in mainly romantic roles, but nothing really challenging. In the 2000s, he starred in movies like Fanaa and Love Aaj Kal in supporting roles and his performance was well-recieved. In the 2010′s, he transitioned into character acting pretty well. In Do Dooni Chaar, he played the role of middle-class father which earned him a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. He played the antagonist in Agneepath and a principal in Student of the Year. His most well-known performances of this area of his career were D-day, 102 Not Out, and Mulk. He also wrote an autobiography Khullam Khulla, which was well-recieved. His last film appearance was The Body and Sharmaji Namkeen was under production when he passed away.
Notable Performances
Raj Nath in Bobby
Akbar Illhabadi in Amar Akbar Anthony
Kishen Malhotra/Tony Braganza in Bol Radha Bol
Santosh Duggal in Do Dooni Chaar
Rauf Lala in Agneepath
Dawood Ibrahim in D-Day
Amarjeet Kapoor in Kapoor and Sons
Murad Ali Mohammed in Mulk
Legacy
Even though he was born a star kid, Rishi Kapoor exhibits good characteristics and goals for one to aspire to be. From questionable home life, to his love of cinema in general. He appeared charismatic in media and showed a mildly sophiticated taste in content on the later parts of his career. When he was diagnosed with leukemia, his candidness about the condition was inspiring and allowed many to look up to him. His long career is praiseworthy and may he rest in peace.

And then I wake up the next day to this news
Feels like it really has been too much mourning in 2020 already!
For days now I’ve been trying to avoid the news because so mugh death and sickness is reported - I found it hard to process it all and it all felt too much and too hard!
And now I’m thinking what’s the point? One way or another nature will take it’s course! There feels like no escape to this horror show!
There is so much loss! All the brave medical professionals, police and security forces, Covid-19 patients. So much potential gone so soon! And at a time like this when the world was turning to artists for solace, to hear such news really makes you appreciate everything that you have, everything that you can access that others cannot!
I feel so miserable I’m clearly incoherent in this post. Quite the reflection of how I feel inside!
This year feels like a supercharged game of Dodge Ball - and we’re not doing very well!
On a serious note, Irrfan Khan was one of THE best and versatile actor I’ve had the privilege to watch across the global cinema industry - hands down! But his death feels like a loss much more personal than that of a movie star! In his craft, in his conduct in and out of that world, he was an inspiration to all of us in how to keep hanging on and keep working on it - to not give up - and to not lose sight of where you’ve come from when you reach where you wish to! I won’t claim to have watched everything he’s in, I’m terrible at catching up to the films I wanna watch - but all that I saw endeared him to me!
As devastated as I was when I first heard of his illness, it’s nothing compared to how gutted I feel today!
A gem of a human being was taken from us too fucking soon and I guess all we can do is hold on to the legacy he left behind and learn as much as we can from it and remember him fondly, with a smile!
RIP Irrfan Khan!
