The very first Asian drama (Taiwanese) I ever watched was Mars. Someone uploaded episodes on YouTube way back in the early 2000s and I was enamored. I thought it was the coolest show ever.

The female lead was Barbie Hsu. She was one of the most beautiful girls I had ever seen. The perfect little face and her voice was pleasant too. She had that certain type of feminine energy that I always wanted to invoke. I was an instant fan.

Waking up this morning and finding out she passed feels like a piece of my childhood has been wiped away. Of course it's not about me. And my heart breaks for her husband. But I still felt like speaking about her.

Back in November another original in my life Song Jae Rim passed and the same feeling overtook me.

I always harp about not worshipping celebrities. And I don't think I do. But I can't help but mourn them. I need to mourn them.

As an Irish girl in college discovering Asian dramas for the first time, Boys Over Flowers was the first series that caught my attention. Originally from the anime, and then to the various live action drama adaptations.

Meteor Garden (the smash hit 2001 Taiwanese adaptation) was one of the first Asian dramas that really captured my heart. I remember watching all of the episodes on YouTube with English subtitles, and falling for the story all over again. Both Barbie Hsu and Jerry Yan as Shan Cai and Dao Ming Si gave their all over the two seasons, and they led me into watching other dramas that they appeared in - especially Barbie Hsu as Qi Luo in the Taiwanese drama Mars with Vic Chou of F4 and Meteor Garden fame.

Today I woke up to the news that Barbie Hsu has died at the age of 48 due to pneumonia caused by complications from influenza.

I'll never forget the impact that Barbie Hsu's acting had on my love of Asian dramas, and I know others will not forget her either.

Domyouji, Daoming Si and Gu Jun Pyo were spoiled brats with a domineering mother and a cool sister. It's his sister that raised him and gave him a good beating when she thought he needed one. So let meet them.

Number 1: 1992 Hana Yori Dango Anime. Since the 1995 did not complete the full story meaning Domyouji's family was not a part of the abbreviated movie version I am including the anime where Domyouji's sister whacked him in the kisser.

Number 2: 2001 METEORGARDEN. Daoming Si's mother made her appearance around Episode 14 appearing for her son's birthday and meeting Dong Shancai whom she hated immediately. His sister arrived around Episode 9 to give him some love and a beating.

But she was keeping the business running for Domyouji Tsukuba to take over. She was mean. His sister stepped in to protect Makino from her brother.

Number 5: 2018 Meteor Garden China's Remake had one mean mama. She was willing to let her son suffer a hunger strike because she would not allow him to marry Dong Shancai. She had him kidnapped and even cut him off financially (briefly) but I do believe she truly loved her son. They gave her vulnerability as she almost lost the business and needed Daoming Si to marry to get out of it. His sister arrived to whoop his ass when she saw him manhandling Dong Shancai
