Fail Better Premium: David's Thoughts (Part VII, 1/1)
Tumblr media
Creating a breadcrumb trail with David Duchovny's personal growth.
David Duchovny: "Hi, Fail Better premium listeners! This week I'm coming to you with something a little different.
"I talked with Patric Gagne for so long about so many different things; so, I wanted to share a little more from that interview. I love this moment when it happened-- and it showed an interesting side to her, I thought."
[Excerpt begins.]
DD: "Well, let me ask you: do you have feelings for the planet that's dying? Do you have feelings for animals? Do you have more feelings for animals than you have for people?"
Patric: "Probably. Yeah. But I've, I've noticed that I... the less I have to engage with that animal, the more I can experience those feelings. So--"
DD: "Hm."
Patric: "I... um, was recently-- this is such a dark story; but I was recently in, um, the humane society. And I had gotten there early, before it had opened, because I was doing something there; and a man came in. And he was very much the... based on the clothes that he was wearing, he was very much the spiritual opposite of me. He represented a lot of the things I do not represent-- and it was very overt. I mean, this was someone who was very clearly trying to cause a reaction by the clothes he was wearing: the things that were written on his shirt, the things that were written on his hat. And he came in and he had a dog with him.
Patric: "And... and as soon as they saw him, the people in the humane society really wanted nothing to do with him because of what he was promoting. But they finally got to him; and they said, 'Why are you here?' And he said, 'I'm here because I need to put my dog down. He's dying; and I need to put my dog down.' And, and she goes, 'Do you have an appointment?' No he didn't. And she goes, 'Alright, well, you can't do it without an appointment-- you're gonna have to come back tomorrow. I'm gonna go, and, y'know, gonna get some paperwork.'
Patric: "And it was just him and me in this waiting room. And he was so sad. And he was just petting this dog; and he had such... he was in so much grief. And the woman comes back and says, 'The appointment's tomorrow.' And he said, 'How much does, how much will it cost?' And she said-- I think it was, like, $300 or something. And he started shaking; and he said, 'I, I can't afford that.' And I remember saying, 'That's okay. I can. Go home, have a good day with your dog; come back tomorrow; and it's all taken care of.' And... I didn't have to engage with this person; I didn't have to engage with this dog; I didn't have to have a relationship with either of these beings to understand the pain that they were both experiencing, for completely different reasons. And I wanted to stop that pain. I wanted to take care of it so that they wouldn't have to suffer anymore.
Patric: "And so when you ask about the planet or animals, that's what I feel-- is that, that I do feel for the planet; and I think it's outrageous that, that.... Once again: choosing to deny reality doesn't make, y'know, that reality any less accurate; it just makes you less safe within that reality. And so, when I see the cognitive dissonance at play with the atrocities being committed to the planet, to animals, I am enraged by it.
Patric: "Now, is my reaction to curl up in a little ball and cry? Is my reaction to cuddle a bunch of animals? To, to adopt a bunch of dogs? No, that's not my strength. I'm not a dog person-- I, I have a hard time with being around... with need. Like with the man in the humane society, I saw pain, I saw solution. It was an easy solution--" [claps her hands loudly] "--let's take care of it and keep it moving."
DD: "Let me just say, um, nobody would know this but while you were telling that story, your eyes were actually tearing up. Y'know, so--"
Patric: "Yeah."
DD: "--You cry."
Patric: "Yeah, oh for sure. Sadness is an inherent emotion. I feel extreme sadness-- I just can't always connect to others while experiencing that. I can't always connect to others' sadness, in, in, in a way that's 'typical.' But I remember seeing that animal, and understanding that that animal was in pain. And this man, who, y'know, by virtue of what he was wearing was clearly trying to insult and enrage others; and I understood that because he was, y'know, because he had taken this position he probably wasn't getting a lot of help."
(Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV: 1/3, Part IV: 2/3, Part IV: 3/3, Part V: 1/3, Part V: 2/3, Part V: 3/3, Part VI: 1/2, Part VI: 2/2, Part VIII: 1/1, Part IX: 1/1, Part X: 1/1)

mid-year book freakout
tagged by @sapphicscience
number of books you’ve read so far: 57, i set my reading goal for 25 this year hoping it would push me to take my time with each book & be more reflective but then the unemployment hit and i got a little manic
best book you’ve read so far in 2024: poor deer by claire oshetsky is probably my sentimental fav so far! objectively the best were the spear cuts through water by simon jimenez and kindred by octavia butler both of which completely blew me away.
best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024: i very rarely read sequels, i think the only series i’ve read this year are dungeon meshi and beastars. i did read the first installments of dune, interview with the vampire (reread…shut up lmao) and the tainted cup by robert jackson bennett and will probably continue with all three!
new release you haven’t read yet but want to: i’ve had sociopath: a memoir by patrick gagne on hold at the library for months now, so that one comes to mind lol also really interested in picking up craft: stories i wrote for the devil by amanda lima, the haar by david sodergren, little rot by akwaeke emezi and private rites by julia armfield!
most anticipated release for the second half of the year: excited for the new charlotte mcconaghy, wild dark shore! honestly after migrations i’d pay to read her grocery list. also looking forward to hum by helen phillips (i loved the need, also by her!)
biggest surprise: this may just be recency bias but i picked up a good happy girl by marissa higgins not expecting to feel too strongly about it and wow, i felt seen (derogatory) lmao strongly recommend to all lesbians with dad and/or grandma trauma and a penchant for emotional self-sabotage ✌️
favorite new author (debut or new to you): so many! for a few not mentioned above: adora nworah, layla martínez, jennifer marie thorn, neil sharpson and andrew joseph white!
newest fictional crush: oh absolutely catherine from a good happy girl lol the second coming of lydia tár. etain larkin from knock knock, open wide is also up there (final girl turned shitty bitter traumatized mother? obsessed obsessed obsessed with her)
books that made you cry: i’m a robot, i don’t cry over media, i’m sorry! ducks: two years in the oil sands by kate beaton did make me a little misty.
most beautiful books you’ve bought so far this year (or received): working at the public library (and also having no money <\3) has sadly cured me of my compulsive book-buying habit ): i did buy a few physical volumes of dungeon meshi and all of them are gorgeous.
books that made you happy: again, dungeon meshi! & i had a really great time with the tainted cup by robert jackson bennett (fantasy + page-turning mystery with the most endearing cast of characters!) also found come and get it by kiley reid to be oddly delightful despite dealing with some pretty heavy topics.
what books do you need to read by the end of the year?: i’d like to finish emily wilson’s translations of the iliad and the odyssey. also parable of the sower by octavia butler, butter honey pig bread by francesca ekwuyasi and the first installment in the earthsea cycle by ursula k. le guin (all of which have been on my tbr for ages)
tagging @dykes4knights, @strangesmallbard, @thefinalpaperheart, @nicollekidman, @raffaella-cerullo, @jonismitchell , @tennesseewillams , @khukri and whoever else wants to do it!

CBWA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
The Bogota Heat vs Too Cold Bogota & Big Donnie
Tumblr media
Big Donnie and OJ start with a lockup. OJ surprisingly is able to stand against Big Donnie, then shift to a headlock. Big Donnie actually goes toe-to-toe with OJ on the mat. Big Donnie takes OJ down, then almost punches his lights out, then holds back and lets OJ recover. A waistlock takedown from Big Donnie.
Big Donnie on his knees, OJ moves to kicks his head off, then pulls the kick and lets the foot rest against Big Donnie’s head. Big Donnie offers a fist bump, OJ takes it, they back to their corners and tag out. Wow. True sportsmanship there folks.
T.C. tries a shoulder block. Head scissors takedown, then a kip up into a dropkick sends Too Cold Bogota flying. A full brawl breaks out with OJ and T.C. getting the upper hand. Too Cold Bogota turns it around by himself and tags Big Donnie in, who body slams Too Cold Bogota onto T.C.. Big Donnie wants to body slam Too Cold Bogota onto OJ, OJ recovers, punches Big Donnie who ends up body slamming Too Cold Bogota onto the mat. Tag to T.C. who goes nuts on Big Donnie. Standing shooting star press gets T.C. two. T.C. actually tries to put Big Donnie in an abdominal stretch. Tag to OJ. Clothesline gives OJ only one. The crowd starts going nuts for something but I am not sure what. A “you deserve it” chant which makes no sense. Big Donnie gets sent to the corner but elbows T.C. off. Big Donnie takes a legsweep, rollup for two. Big Donnie with a sick knee to OJ, double tag. Backdrop sends T.C. to the moon, then a low crossbody. OJ catches a knee strike, roundhouse to the head, Big Donnie counters a splash with a knee, OJ with a knee, then a German suplex into a cover for a nearfall. Double tag. T.C. and Too Cold Bogota practically dance with each other, Too Cold Bogota ducks the handspring back elbow then hits one of his own for two-and-a-half. CBWA INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP  The Eye of Gibson vs The Ether Bunny
Tumblr media
The Eye of Gibson would make his way out to the ring first, along with his new stooge, his father actor Claude Akins.
Ether Bunny made his way out second, the obvious crowd favorite tonight. As he made his way into the ring, Gibson and his father bailed out of the ring and continued to complain to the crowd.
Gibson finally made his way into the ring, but immediately rolled back out, wasting everyone’s time. The bell finally rang, as Gibson finally came in and stayed. Ether Bunny went for a lockup, but Gibson kicked him in the stomach. The two traded evading moves while rope running, but Ether Bunny hit a one legged drop kick. Gibson rolled out of the ring to waste even more time, as his father Claude Akins checked on him. Gibson and Ether Bunny locked up again, after Gibson returned to the ring, and Gibson locked in a headlock. Ether Bunny slipped out, and the two men ran the ropes again, Ether Bunny hitting a headscissor takeover, and followed it with another one legged dropkick.
Gibson rolled out of the ring again, and Ether Bunny looked to be going for some sort of tope, but Claude Akins stepped in the way. While Ether Bunny was distracted by Aikins, The Eye of Gibson TRIED to sneak in behind Ether Bunny, but Ether Bunny saw it coming. Gibson had his front kick attempt blocked, but then ducked under a clothesline, and then his an enziguri for a one count. Gibson tossed Ether Bunny out of the ring and distracted the ref, as Claude Akins attacked Ether Bunny and then tossed him back into the ring for a two count by The Eye of Gibson.
Gibson missed a charge into the ropes, and Ether Bunny hit a springboard armdrag sending Gibson outside. Ether Bunny was going to try a suicide dive, but Gibson moved, and Ether Bunny slid out of the ring instead. Ether Bunny jumped back up on the apron and hit a wrecking ball dropkick onto Gibson, as Ether Bunny jumped into the ring. Claude Akins came into the ring and ran at Ether Bunny, but Ether Bunny back dropped him over the ropes onto The Eye of Gibson, taking both men out! Ether Bunny went for another dive, but the ref stepped in his way stopping him because he needed to check on Akins and Gibson. Ether Bunny decided he was going to dive anyway, and leapt over the ref and hit a tope con giro onto Gibson and Akins!
Ether Bunny grabbed Gibson and hit a stiff chop, before tossing him back in the ring. Ether Bunny made the cover, but only got a two count. Ether Bunny sent Gibson into the corner and followed him in with a clothesline, but as Ether Bunny went back across the ring Gibson followed HIM and hit a front kick into the corner on Ether Bunny. Gibson tried the same thing, but Ether Bunny followed HIM into the corner with a flying forearm. Ether Bunny whipped Gibson BACK across the ring, but Gibson reversed it. Ether Bunny slid out of the ring by the ringpost, and goaded Gibson to follow him out. Gibson did follow, and Ether Bunny immediately went back into the ring. As Gibson was sliding in, Ether Bunny hit a guillotine leg drop from the second rope on Gibson, getting a close two count.
Ether Bunny picked Gibson up, and attempted some sort of suplex, but Gibson countered into a botched stunner. Gibson then went up top, hitting a leg drop, but only got a two count. Gibson picked Ether Bunny back up, landing several stiff forearm shots. Ether Bunny fought back, but it was cut off initially.
Ether Bunny and Gibson exchanged rope running reversals, but Ether Bunny hit a Bogota fly out of nowhere for a close two! Calude Akins got up on the apron, but Ether Bunny knocked him off and sent him face first into the railing. That was a big distraction, though, as Gibson was up top waiting for Ether Bunny to turn around. Gibson came off the top with a spinning springboard South American uppercut for the three count!
WINNER and NEW CBWA INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION: The Eye of Gibson
Tumblr media
CBWA NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Bogota Blake vs Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert
Tumblr media
Headed out to the ring first, accompanied by The Gibson Agency, was Bogota Blake.
Pork Chop Cash on commentary labeled them the “Trust fund Express”, and made sure to let us know all of Bogota Blake’s horrible qualities.
Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert would be out next.
They traded lockups to begin the match, with the Gibson Agency (Lupe & Buford Pusser) constantly interfering on Bogota Blake’s behalf. The ref finally catches Lupe tripping Gilbert, which prompted him to throw both Lupe and Pusser out of ringside. With things on a level playing field, Gilbert took over the early going. Gilbert hit a nice dropkick on Bogota Blake, and used his speed to stay a step ahead. Gilbert got a rollup for a two count, but Bogota Blake pushed him off shoulder first into the turnbuckle. Bogota Blake followed that up with a shoulder breaker, taking control of the match. Bogota Blake worked on the shoulder and arm, using a combinations of knees, stomps, and a hammerlock to try and re-injure Gilbert’s shoulder. He continued to try and break Gilbert down, hitting a big overhead toss using the arm as leverage. Bogota Blake took Gilbert up top, but Gilbert fought him off before hitting a crossbody from the top rope.
Bogota Blake missed a flurry of right hands, just to get chopped for his trouble. Gilbert had taken control, though much of it with only one arm as he sold the injury. Gilbert landed a huge one armed powerslam for a close two count. Bogota Blake rolled into a corner and pulled himself up, as did Gilbert.
Gilbert went for the running dropkick into the corner, but Bogota Blake pulled the ref in front of him stopping the move. Gilbert was distracted, and Bogota Blake poked him in the eyes. Bogota Blake quickly went to the second rope, hitting a double stomp to Gilbert’s shoulder, and rolled him up for a very close two count of his own.
Bogota Blake wasted too much time arguing with the ref about the count, and when he went back to grab Gilbert, Gilbert rolled him up into a small package for the three count!
WINNER: Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert
Tumblr media
SOUTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP Buford Pusser vs Yakuzza
Tumblr media
Pusser would make his way out first, from  Adamsville, Tennessee. Pusser made sure to do all he could to agitate the crowd. Yakuzza was out next and has already become the longest reigning South American Champion in CBWA history.
Yakuzza charged the ring, but Pusser caught him as he came in with stomps to the back, and forearm blows to the back of the head and neck. The two men traded blows in the middle of the ring, but neither could gain a huge amount of momentum. Pusser backed Yakuzza into a corner, and hit a few strikes to the midsection. Pusser then whipped Yakuzza to the opposite turnbuckle, and followed it with a flying elbow and then a clothesline. Yakuzza rolled out of the ring, but Pusser followed him out giving him quick strikes against the railing.
Yakuzza fought back with chops, and then sent Pusser back first into the railing. Pusser then fought back with chops of his own. Yakuzza made his way back to the ring, and Pusser followed him back in. Pusser continued to hold the momentum with quick palm strikes, but Yakuzza reversed an irish whip into the ropes, and sent Buford throat first into the top rope. Yakuzza stood on Pusser’s throat, and then put him in short armbar. Pusser fought his way out with kicks to the head, but Yakuzza cut him off by pulling him to the mat by his hair.
Yakuzza then applied a half camel clutch, and raked at Pusser’s eyes. Yakuzza continued to use chokes on Pusser, and then pulled him up for a captured arm clothesline. Yakuzza continued to just wear Pusser down with a camel clutch, but Pusser finally made it to the ropes, Yakuzza used the ropes to choke Pusser after the break though.
Yakuzza climbed out of the ring, and used the ring post to choke Pusser again. He climbed back up on the apron, and tried to splex Pusser out of the ring to the floor, but Pusser fought until he reversed it.
Yakuzza back in control, but Pusser fished a spike out of his boot. Pusser tried to spike Yakuzza, but Yakuzza ducked, and the spike stuck in the top turnbuckle. Yakuzza hit a punch to the gut, and then a spinning heel kick, and then went to get the spike himself.
Yakuzza went to use the spike, but the referee tried to stop him, so Yakuzza tossed the spike into the crowd.
That gave Pusser a chance to attack Yakuzza while the referee was distracted. Pusser nailed Yakuzza with his wooden stick. The pin, 1-2-3!
WINNER and NEW SOUTH AMERICAN CHAMPION: Buford Pusser

CBWA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH Big Bubba Bogota vs Steve Ryder
Tumblr media
Bubba was out first followed by the CBWA World Champion Steve Ryder, sans Jimmy Hart. Ryder fired Jimmy Hart last week when he joined the Gibson family.
As we already know, Bubba and Ryder don’t like one another.
The match started quickly as a brawl, both men love that style. They quickly rolled out of the ring and brawled on the floor. Steve hit Big Bubba with a beer can, but Big Bubba returned the favor. Steve and Big Bubba traded can shots again, but Steve won the exchange. Steve grabbed a chair, and dropped Big Bubba throat first on it. Steve tried to suplex Bubba on the concrete, but it was blocked the first time. After several attempts, Steve finally hit the suplex, but Big Bubba seemed to enjoy the pain. Steve set up a chair and ended up hitting another suplex on Big Bubba onto the opened chair.
Steve tried to rip off Bubba’s suit jacket, but Bubba stopped him and took it off saying give me your best shot. He did but Big Bubba blocked it and gave him a tough chop across his now bare chest, which put Steve on his knees. Big Bubba went for a second, but Steve hit one instead. Steve rolled Big Bubba into the ring, and followed him in with a chair. Steve gave Big Bubba a big chair shot across the back, and suddenly the bell rang. Steve was mad, and pulled the ref over to the timekeeper to see what had happened. There’s no real explanation for what happened, other than possibly an inadvertent bell, but Big Bubba used this distraction to recover.
Big Bubba floored Steve with a chair to the back, but couldn’t follow up because of the referee. Steve recovered enough to hit Big Bubba in the throat. Steve then set up a chair in the middle of the ring, and put Big Bubba’s head in it. He then tied Big Bubba hands up in his suspenders, and gave him a big chop across the back. Steve gave him another, but Big Bubba powered to his feet. Big Bubba kicked Steve in the face, broke his hands free, and then hit a series of right hands. He still had the chair around his head, which caused Steve to drop toehold him chair first into the mat. Steve set up the chair in the ring again, and tried for a Pileryder but Big Bubba blocked. He sat Steve in the chair, and then hit multiple headbutts on Ryder. Big Bubba came off the ropes, but Steve caught him and twisted him up into the tombstone position. Steve turned and dropped Big Bubba head first through the chair, but Big Bubba somehow kicked out at two!
Steve rolled out of the ring and grabbed a piece of wood, and brought it into the ring and set it in the corner. When he turned around, though, Big Bubba speared him through the wood. It only got a one count, as Steve kicked out mad. Both stood up, and Steve spit right in his face. Big Bubba hit a kick to the gut, and then a huge Lariat for a two count. Big Bubba set up in the corner and was about to hit a knee pad up, knee pad down, but in came The Eye of Gibson, his father Claude Akins, Lupe, Buford Pusser and Jimmy Reed.
The Gibson family are beating down Big Bubba. Gibson pulls out a bottle and smashes it over Bubba’s head. Bubba is bleeding everywhere.
The camera shoots to the back to see a forklift parked in front of a dressing room door. The Bogota Heat and Tony Atlas are stuck inside and can’t get out to help Bubba.
Lupe and Jimmy Reed are setting up a table. One dead center of the ring and the other, upright in the corner. Ryder runs full steam across the ring and spears Bubba right through the table. MY GOD, the destruction.
Ryder covers Big Bubba for the 1-2-3.
WINNER and STILL CBWA CHAMPION: Steve Ryder
Buford Pusser places Bubba on the table in the middle of the ring. Lupe goes up top with a steel chair and comes down hard across Bubba, crashing through the table.
Ryder calls for the Pileryder so Pusser picks up a half dead Bubba and hands him to Steve. Bubba goes up and Ryder delivers a devastating Pileryder.

Dust: Volume 3, Number 12
Tumblr media
Pessimist
In early fall, the pace of record releasing and reviewing picks up, and with the new chill in the air, we all realize that we are way behind on everything. So to clear the pipes and celebrate what we’ve been meaning to celebrate all along, here is a new back-to-school issue of Dust. This time, we had a really broad range of participants covering all manner of music -- Bill Meyer, Ian Mathers, Matt Wuethrich, Derek Taylor, Eric McDowell, Michael Rosenstein, Jennifer Kelly and Mason Jones.
176 — Music in Eight Octaves (Immediata)
IMM011: Music In Eight Octaves by 176
Ever wonder what Conlon Nancarrow’s music for player pianos would sound like stretched out over 50 minutes? If so, this is it. Pianist Anthony Pateras and fellow keyboardist Chris Abrahams of The Necks recorded this 50-minute performance in 2005, but are releasing it now as part of Pateras’ Immediata project, along with the series’ obligatory liner notes dialogue between Pateras and the other performer.
The only formal structures the two seem to rely on are a stacking of temporal layers, timbral density, and surging intensities. There are no quiet or reflective moments here, the sound being continuous and mostly very fast, but neither is this uncontrolled cacophony. At times, there is so much activity the piece almost reaches stasis; at others, the sheer amount of pointillist notes is overwhelming. The tension between these poles creates, however, an engaging contradiction: hyperactive music that demands absolute concentration.
Matt Wuethrich
 1982 — Chromola (Hubro)
It makes sense that the trio 1982 is named for the band’s baby, drummer Øyvind Skarbø. He was nervy enough to get the project rolling when he asked Hardanger fiddle player Nils Økland, 20 years his senior, to play an improvised gig together after Økland gave him a lesson. Ten years on Skarbø, Økland, and harmonium/pipe organ player Sigbjørn Apeland are still at it, performing music that is simultaneously true to the sonic signatures of their instruments and the impulse to play things their own way. Which means that Apeland doesn’t shy from the churchy sounds his instruments were conceived to make, but he’s also willing to tangle some tone clusters up in Skarbø’s rustle and rumble. Likewise Økland, who also plays a conventional violin, lets his melodies unfold patiently, all the better to let the overtones radiate from his strings and form a halo of sympathetic vibrations. But he’s also right in there with his fellows, complicating the dissonances and accenting the rhythms. Skarbø moves fluidly between measured cadences, pulse-free surges, and patient silences, contributing most by contributing just what the music needs.
Bill Meyer
Antoine Beuger — Ockeghem Octets (Another Timbre)
youtube
The title of Antoine Beuger’s latest for Another Timbre may mislead the uninitiated. Part of an additive series of homages to some of the Wandelweiser co-founder’s favorite artists and thinkers — Dedekind Duos, Cantor Quartets, Favery Tunings for Fourteen — Ockeghem Octets does reference the influential 15th-century Flemish composer of masses, motets and chansons, however obliquely. What Beuger distills from Ockeghem is the canon form: Each of the 25 pieces represented on this disc find the octet divided into two halves, each half playing a different line of four tones, entirely at each musician’s own pace. That playing through these micro-compositions takes nearly 70 minutes (over a single unbroken track) suggests the octet’s approach to the material — unhurried, to say the least. But when you consider that Beuger is the same composer who’s written a piece that asks audiences to listen to a solo musician “basically sitting in silence, very rarely playing one single very soft, rather short sound,” followed by anywhere from 20 to 80 minutes of complete silence, the Ockeghem Octets’ glacially shifting layers start to seem positively gaudy with harmonic and timbral colors. An exaggeration, of course, but phase one of the initiation into Beuger’s sound world is adjusting your perspective.

Dungen — Häxan/Versions by Prins Thomas (Smalltown Supersound)
A couple of years ago, Dungen were asked to create a new soundtrack to Lotte Reiniger’s early 1926 animated film "The Adventures of Prince Achmed,” which led to the first instrumental album from Dungen, Häxan. Here, Prins Thomas takes that album's music and creates a new experience, over an hour of songs constructed using more or less of the originals. Some pieces are based on a few sounds, while others are primarily rearranged from the original tapes.
When it comes to the recognizable pieces, Thomas mostly finds a way to accentuate the core. Just taking opener "Peri Banu vid sjön" as an example, the original is a slow, reverbed drum beat and floating synth tones, peaceful and vaguely pretty. The version here, stretched to five minutes, takes its time getting going, the warbly synth melody leading to the drums entering with a rather Floydian touch. In this version the reverb's gone, and everything's more immediate.
Elsewhere, there's some good steady space rock, and plenty of kosmische stylings, with parts that have the head-nodding mekano beats of Neu! and their descendants, and "Kalifen" is one of the most Floydian songs that's come along in some time, harkening back strongly to Atom Heart Mother-era synth scapes. Others, though, come off as kind of soft-psych filler.
Ultimately, although there's plenty of creative reconstruction here, nearly all of the songs carry on past the length they can support, not surprising given that a 40-minute album was rebuilt to 67 minutes. More aggressive editing could have honed this to a stronger core, but even so, if you're looking for a drawn-out hazy journey you could most definitely do worse.

The Elks — This Is Not the Ant (Mikroton)
This Is Not The Ant by The Elks
The great thing about the Berlin/Vienna Improv scene is the quirky collaborations that pop up between musicians of disparate backgrounds. The Elks is a perfect example, pulling together trumpet player Liz Allbee, clarinetist Kai Fagaschinski, tape manipulator Marta Zapparoli and audio-visual munger Billy Roisz. Across four cuts (two around five minutes long and two over twice that), the four pile together shredded tones, corroded timbres, arcing oscillations and hissing static into improvisations that buzz and thrum with an unstable energy. What’s particularly striking here is how the four eschew any sense of improv arc, instead diving in to a bucking collective flurry that can break into muted calm or vault to thundering stridency at any moment. One minute, Fagaschinski’s low-end clarinet tones hum and drone against a low-level thrumming electronic pulse. The next Allbee’s sibilant hiss kicks in against a whorl of electronic scree. Overtones meld with feedback, burred harmonics and glitched tapes are scumbled together. Braying trumpet, quavering chalumeau and sputtering electronics coalesce and then break open to dark, tolling low-end reverberations. The seamless mix of acoustic and electronic instruments makes for a rich palette which bares glints of detail within the constantly shifting field of sound.

Footings — Resolver (Don’t Live Like Me)
Resolver by Footings
Hey, a local band! Not living in anything remotely resembling a “scene,” this doesn’t happen to me often, but Thing in the Spring proprietor Eric Gagne slipped me a DL of his alt-country-ish, slacker rock Footings’ latest recording, and what do you know, it’s pretty good. I caught them a month or two ago opening for alt-Baptist-roots-revivalists House & Land, and the main problem then was that the guitar drowned out everything else. Here, with a proper mix, the slash of indie guitar (think Sebadoh or Jason Loewenstein solo) still dominates, but there’s enough space for Elizabeth Fuschia’s viola to seep through, whether in resonant bowed throbs (“Hopelessly”) or pizzicato plucking (“Vibrations, Too”). You can also hear the singing, which alternates from a rough but rueful rock howl a la Silver Jews or David Bazan in the louder songs to a sensitive country croon in the soft ones, which may put you in mind of Richard Buckner. As in the live set, “Pajo” stands out, with its circling, swirling, enveloping melancholy, but stick around for the very acoustic “Pollen” which tamps down the mayhem to minimum and finds a quiet revelation in picked acoustic, string tones, soft duet singing and the roll of cymbals.

Joe Goddard — Electric Lines (Domino)
youtube
Goddard’s had plenty of side projects outside of his main gig at Hot Chip, but a listen to the accomplished, wide-ranging Electric Lines makes it clear why he calls this his solo debut. The warmth and dancefloor nous Goddard brings to Hot Chip are in evidence here too; the difference is more in sonic terms than emotional timbres. Here Goddard mostly takes the more traditional electronic producer's backseat to a rotating cast of singers (sampled and not) over an assorted but solid set of productions that range from the affectionate throwbacks of "Home" and "Lose Your Love" to the restrained digital ballardry of "Human Heart" and "Nothing Moves" to more purely banging "Lasers" and "Bumps.” The result is a kaleidoscopic but always endearingly humane tour through the various vistas of electronic music, culminating with the heart-rending, melancholy directness of his Hot Chip partner Alexis Taylor's vocals on the title track and singer SLO's joyful resolution on closer "Music is the Answer." That faith in his art form is one of the reasons that Goddard's work, in a band or here on his own, is so fulfilling.

  Lo Tom— Lo Tom (Barsuk)
Lo Tom by Lo Tom
David Bazan first played with the guys in Lo Tom — that’s Trey Many, TW Walsh and Jason Martin — about the time they all started shaving, as part of a surprisingly fertile NW enclave of Christian-centered rock (that also included Damien Jurado, but forget him for the moment, he’s not in Lo Tom). All four of them have gone on to other bands, Bazan maybe the best known of the bunch for Pedro the Lion and his solo discs, but Many in Velour 100 and Starflyer 59, Walsh with Pedro, too, and Martin, also in Starflyer 59. Lo Tom is a kind of low-stakes, tossed off side project, performed mostly for the love of the game, but executed with a loose, comfortable, red-meat-rock brio that bends big guitar licks and rough poetry to the task of exploring mid-life issues. Bazan is in very fine form in these eight songs, exhibiting a trademark mordant directness, which is blunt enough to make you laugh, though you’re never sure whether he’s trying to be funny. The protagonist in “Bubblegum,” for instance, is mystified when he repeatedly wakes up with rubbery clumps of gum in his hair, “You blink your eyes and wonder how did it even get there/it’s not even the flavor of gum you chew/but either way your head’s stuck to your pillow, what’s wrong with you?’  You tell me, humorous or tragic? The lyrics, delivered in Bazan’s buzz cut baritone, are wrapped in a big-shouldered indie guitar racket, reminiscent of early aughts indies like Silkworm and Built to Spill. It’s loud and abrasive on the outside with a soft emotional center, the tough guy with a wry self-deprecating smile and a dog-eared copy of Seamus Heaney poems in his back pocket. What more could you want?

Milked — Death on Mars (Exploding in Sound)
Death on Mars by Milked
Chicago punk rocker Kelly Johnson has sweetened his sound since his Geronimo! days, kicking up a fizzy, rackety, ear-wormy sound that recalls the Rock A Teens, Red Kross and Exploding Hearts. “White Punks,” which bemoans the life-art balancing act of indie rock wage slavery, churns to a start with monster bass and a careening guitar vamp that owes a little to “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”  “Caledonia” is fizzier, more melodic, jangling like a particularly tuneful key ring in a working man’s pocket. And “Death on Mars,” the title track, is a punk romantic anthem, blaring in hearts-on-sleeve endearing-ness with slow, syrupy, overblown guitars with a plan for life partnership spanning the solar system. All nine tracks are irresistible hits of power pop aggression, rough on the edges and likely loud as fuck in the room, but bursting with a hand-drawn valentine’s worth of good feeling. Death on Mars came out early this summer as part of Exploding in Sounds’ tape series, and if you missed it, stay tuned for the next one. Johnson doesn’t sound like he’s anywhere near done with this exuberant project.

Shane Parish—Ballad of an Unarmed Man  (Self-released)
Ballad of an Unarmed Man by Shane Parish
Musicians rarely get to capture their epiphanies in a shareable form, but Shane Parish lucked out. The Asheville NC guitarist, who tours and records with Ahleuchatistas and keeps a variety of other duos with players such as Michael Libramento and Tashi Dorji, has cultivated a formidable variety of playing modes, which has also come in handy in his day job as a guitar teacher. One night in February 2016 he sat down with the charts to a few American folk tunes, an acoustic guitar and the digital recorder that he uses for study. He started playing and found himself in a psychic and musical zone that felt simultaneously new and familiar. He was, at least for the time, home. Parish went on to develop this material into Undertaker Please Drive Slow, a superb solo album that Tzadik released at the end of 2016, but has decided to put out the original flash of inspiration as a download-only release. What’s remarkable about these performances is how at home he already sounds with a fairly personal approach to traditional material. He doesn’t exactly play it straight, nor does he prioritize a particularly improvisational language and he certainly doesn’t hew to the raga-tinged fingerpicking contemporary of American Primitive practice. Instead familiar melodies slip in and out of focus in a matter that feels akin to memories being recovered, even though that’s not what Parish was doing. You could get all speculative and say that maybe he was locking into something unconscious, or that you’re hearing a lifetime of skill-building aligning with the music on some sheets of paper in ways that the player could not foresee. What is clear is that Parish was onto something that night, and that this release provides a timeline node we can look to as we consider what he’s doing now and what comes next.

Anthony Pateras & Erkki Veltheim—The Slow Creep of Convenience (Immediata)
IMM010: The Slow Creep Of Convenience by Anthony Pateras · Erkki Veltheim
The title does double duty here as aesthetic and social statement. Aesthetically, “slow creep” captures the duo’s formal strategy: Veltheim’s electric violin and Pateras’ pipe organ are deployed as generators of long, continuous sounds, which flow over and against each other in dense layers of overtones and beatings through all levels of the frequency spectrum. Despite the single-minded approach, the performance is full of tension, energy and variety, with the duo having ample time to probe each subtle shift in timbre over the piece’s 50-minute duration. Socially, the title encapsulates the duo’s dialogue in the liner notes, where they dissect current contemporary musical and cultural practices, the discourse surrounding them and the effect technology has on both. This “formless” piece, they suggest, is one effort to reclaim our most valuable commodity: time.

Pessimist — Pessimist (Blackest Ever Black)
Bristol's Kristian Jabs, aka Pessimist, has been releasing EPs for several years now, but this self-titled album is technically his first full-length. Blending bits of drum and bass, techno, dub step, and cold, chilly experimental sounds, it works best when dealing in the combination of complex beats and warehouse ambience. It's difficult to describe the songs here without resorting to words like "cavernous" and "murky", though often the mechanical beats pull things out of the mud and onto the dance floor.
As the score for an end-times dance, the reverb-laden factory floor beats here will do the trick. But while you can let these songs flow past in the background, they too often resort to the same tricks if you focus more closely. The result is that the first few pieces -- "Bloom" with its skeletal warehouse rhythms, "Grit" blending shadowy tones with mechanical beats, and the murky, panned tick-tocks of "Spirals" -- start the album pretty strongly, but as it continues things get more predictable. The rhythms, while often intriguingly layered, tend to be unchanging, and the move from beats to quiet floating to the sudden return of the beats is an overused trick.
Taken individually, though, and certainly in the clubs, these tracks mostly work, with the shifting, interlocking beats of "Peter Hitchens" and the aforementioned "Bloom" particular standouts. The mix of sounds and attitudes Pessimist brings has a lot of potential. It shows through here and there, and the future holds yet more promise.

Saltland — A Common Truth (Constellation)
A Common Truth by Saltland
Rebecca Foon is (or ought to be) well known to fans of various Constellation acts; in addition to cofounding Esmerine, she and her cello have played with Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Set Fire to Flames and others. With her almost entirely solo project Saltland (here aided subtly and well by the Dirty Three's Warren Ellis and producer/Besnard Lakes frontman Jace Lasek on some tracks), her voice and cello take center stage and prove more than capable of holding that ground. It's relatively rare for an album split between instrumentals and vocal pieces like A Common Truth to be equally strong on both sides of the equation, but whether it's the foreboding drone of the opening "To All Us All to Breathe" or the layered cello and voices of the darkly pulsing "Light of Mercy," Foon's work consistently displays a darkly-hued beauty coupled with an intense, almost liturgical focus that marries the sound of the record with these songs' concern with the perils and complex nuances of climate change. With the summer much of the world is currently having, those issues need to be addressed more than ever; few reminders of this fact will be as enthralling as A Common Truth is.

Triptych - Michael Thieke : Tim Daisy : Ken Vandermark (relay 019) by Tim Daisy Michael Thieke Ken Vandermark
Michael Thieke/Tim Daisy/Ken Vandermark — Triptych (Relay Recordings)
Triptych is the latest in a series of fleeting encounters that Tim Daisy has documented on his Relay label. The Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist (drums, percussion, radios) invited Ken Vandermark (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet) and Michael Thieke (clarinet) into the studio to play three compositions and a handful of improvisations by the constituent members. It takes a bit of digging to grasp the title’s implications. While Daisy’s pieces celebrate the three musical personalities involved, they all seem to be very much on the same page. While the music shifts between stated and implied swing time, it does so quite cohesively, and the melodies make a case for Daisy’s growing elegance as a composer. But when you factor in the improvisations, it makes more sense. There is a pair of duets, one between the drummer and Thieke and the other between two clarinets, which display more elbows-out jostling than the compositions. There are also three solos that let you into the relationship between instrumentalist and instrument. Three ways of working, connected but separate — there’s your triptych.

 W-2—Fanatics (Astral Spirits)
Fanatics by W-2
The notion of battles between instrumentalists is built into jazz. You’ve got Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon on Tenor Titans, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane on Tenor Madness, and these guys on the New York subway, all battling away. But W-2 say screw that divide and conquer shit; they may be going into battle when they play, but they’re pointing their weapons in the same direction, not at each other. Tenor saxophonist Sam Weinberg sounds like he’s taken a few lessons from Roscoe Mitchell. He’s got a similar affection for his horn’s extremes and a corresponding commitment to occupying the outer edges of pitch. Chris Welcome has his jazz guitar chops down, but in W-2 he sticks to synthesizer, blasting out dirty sputters and catch me if you can squiggles. Surrender while you can; these guys had you in your sets from the second you walked in the door.

Judith Wegmann – Le Souffle du Temps (hat[now]ART)
Critic Brian Morton contributes a pithy and starkly simple piece of advice at the conclusion of his notes to Le Souffle du Temps. Make requisite time to listen to the music, as the musician made time to prepare for it. Play it again. Follow those simple instructions, and Morton confidently contends you’ll be playing it for years. The fourth dimension is a central aspect of pianist Judith Wegmann’s musical conception. Though she started playing at the age of six and studied jazz classical and improvised music earning two Master’s degrees along the way, this disc marks her debut as a leader. The training is evident, but what’s more striking is her mastery of pacing and placement. Preparing her instrument with an undisclosed array of objects and devices, the disc’s 10 pieces (delineated on paper by Roman numerals and temporal durations) transpire with a sustained air of both deliberateness and spontaneity, however incongruous that might sound. The clack of rocks or marbles, the brittle scraping of strings and the whistling creaks of metal on metal join sparely deployed keyboard notes and patterns to create a depth of field that becomes very easy to get lost in.

Eric Bischoff: Wrestling’s Most Controversial Figure
Eric Bishoff has made the rounds over the years since leaving WWE in 2005 to tell his tales of the business. He wrote a pretty good biography under the ‘WWE Books’ banner in 2006 called Controversy Creates Cash that ranks high up on the wrestler autobiography curve. He has done countless DVD ‘shoot’ and podcast interviews over the years, and he is currently a co-host of the 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff podcast alongside acclaimed wrestling podcaster Conrad Thompson. Needless to say, there are a lot of ways to find out about Eric’s life in wrestling. In 2016, WWE released their official BluRay/DVD with a documentary of Eric’s life and career with the standard array of full-length bonus matches and promos. It is called Eric Bischoff: Wrestling’s Most Controversial Figure (trailer). First off, shame on WWE for that awful home video cover art. When this video was first announced it showed a serious looking Eric on the cover, but I imagine Vince McMahon must have had one last grudge he was fuming over and went out of his way to find the most smug, arrogant looking headshot of Eric and slapped it on the cover. Worst off is the disc cover art where it is modern-day Eric duct taped and hands tied. I would not put it beneath Vince to be of the mindset of ‘Dammit, if I am going to make money off of Eric we are going to at least make him the most pathetic looking person all over the box and disc artwork!’
Bizarre artwork aside, this is actually a surprisingly respectful and serious documentary about Eric Bischoff. The feature interviews Eric on his ranch in Wyoming which provides a serene backdrop throughout and it is apparent the production crew went out of their way to interview Eric in several different spots on the ranch, including a great closing scene with Eric reflecting on his legacy around a campfire. The 95 minute feature is the perfect length for covering his career. The prerequisite ‘before-wrestling’ part of the doc is handled well with Eric detailing how he bounced between Detroit and the Twin Cities and his early business endeavors in landscaping, modeling and aspiring entrepreneur. I forgot about him making a commercial deal with the AWA to promote his Ninja Star Wars game which was the catalyst to him forming a relationship with Verne & Greg Gagne that eventually lead him to receiving a job in the AWA which paved the way for him landing in WCW. There are a lot of interviews with family, friends and peers of Eric throughout. Most prominent are Kevin Nash, Diamond Dallas Page, Sonny Onoo, WCW boss Harvey Schiller, business partner and Wonder Years alumnus Jason Hervey and Eric’s wife Loree. Nash and DDP have a lot of insight on Eric’s rise up the ranks in WCW and how he revolutionized Monday nights with WCW Monday Nitro. They and Schiller also have a lot to say about Eric lost control of WCW first with Time Warner/Turner acquisition and eventually all together with the AOL/Time Warner merger. There are also archived past clips of Eric’s detractors stating their side. I have seen countless takes and read just as many perspectives on the rise and fall of WCW, but to see Eric’s side-of-view is still worth seeing as how he ultimately blames backstage politics with the mergers and acquisitions for the fall of WCW and his eventual ousting from the company in 1999.
I dug Eric looking back on his three and a half years as the first RAW General Manager, and there is a nice montage of moments Eric was part of along with interview snippets from Steve Austin and Chris Jericho sharing their memories of Eric being their boss. I was not surprised to see them omit and not even mention Eric’s four years in TNA/Impact. I was thinking there would be a passing reference like in the Dudleyz or Sting’s WWE documentaries, but it was probably for the best that his time there trying to reignite the ‘Monday Night Wars’ with the Hulkster be best forgotten. One part in the documentary I got a ton out of I always wanted to know more of was Eric’s friendship and business partnership with Jason Hervey. I know the two have been longtime friends and formed a business together, but not much beyond that. Here they have a candid interview with the two breaking down their history and entrepreneurial ambitions and projects they have worked on over the years. Really good stuff here and it shows how Eric is keeping himself busy. It is apparent that Eric is not dwelling on the past and has obviously moved on from his tumultuous days in WCW, especially with that pivotal closing scene with him being introspective around the campfire as a great way to close the documentary.
As with most WWE Home Video releases, the BluRay is packed with bonus content. There is 37 minutes of bonus ‘stories’ aka deleted scenes that were not deemed worthy of the main feature. Highlights include Bishoff’s hunting tales, reflecting on the Turner/Warner merger and Jericho’s memories of going 17 months in WCW without a contract. A couple years ago WWE Network ran a two part Eric Bischoff interview special with JBL that ran for just over 90 minutes combined. It hits a lot of the same bullet points as the documentary, but in a different ‘shoot’ style format with JBL pressing Eric on some of his most controversial decisions. It is highly recommended supplementary material. To finish off the first disc there is another Eric Bischoff feature from WWE Network where Eric counts down and analyzes his top ten most controversial moments. On the second disc there is nearly four and a half hours of full-length past interviews, promos and matches from Eric’s career across AWA/WCW/WWE. About an hour and a half of those are BluRay exclusives. Some of these extras are followed up with brief, modern-day reflections on that moment/match from Eric. There is a lot of gold in here from when Eric was a junior C-list announcer for the AWA and his early WCW years with him interviewing Sid, Larry Zybysko, Vinnie Vegas, DDP, Vader and attempting to get an interview out of Missy Hyatt in the shower. There is a lot of great content here from his days leading the nWo from 97 and 98. I completely forgot how awesome the sketches with Bischoff firing referee Randy Anderson were and Eric went on in the extras to share how WCW got complaints how some fans thought it was legit. Bishoff’s calling out Vince McMahon to a match at Slamboree ’98 and Vince no-showing the match are both standout moments of the Monday Night War that I was delighted to see make the cut for this compilation.
There is a wide array of his top moments as RAW GM in their entirety, and there quite a few standout spots here I completely forgot about. Eric donning the disguise that fooled everyone as the pastor who ruined Billy & Chuck’s wedding is priceless and must-see. Austin messing with Bischoff at Judgment Day 2003 from their time as co-GMs of RAW is also amazing material. The best moment/match on this second disc is easily ‘The Trial of Eric Bischoff.’ It is 35 minutes of gold where WWE’s style of comedy rarely worked where Vince McMahon presided as the judge to determine if Eric could build a compelling argument to keep his job as RAW GM. After nearly a half hour of off and on witnesses throughout RAW, the episode culminated in one of the best sendoffs of an authoritative figure in WWE history! Amazing work that holds up tremendously today! There are a handful of matches included that Eric participated in such as his much anticipated bout with Larry Zybysko at Starrcade ’97, squaring off against Vince on a 2004 RAW and putting his hair on the line against his nephew Eugene from Taboo Tuesday ’04! Sadly, the times Eric did the honors for Ric Flair at Starrcade '98 along with celebrities Jay Leno and David Arquette in tag matches are not included. High marks for this collection! Just keep in mind this is Eric’s take on his side of history, so expect a little bit of spin from him on justifying his actions. The documentary covers all the pivotal points of his life and career (sans-TNA/Impact) and there is a treasure trove of extra features to get lost in and relive a ton of great moments from the ‘Monday Night War’ and Eric’s run as RAW-GM. Final Instructional Design and Technology Project: Reflection
How well were you able to utilize the concepts and techniques you learned from the program (theories, systems design, interface styling, and the creation of multimedia content) as you designed, developed, and implemented your Final Project?
For my final project, I found the Training Needs Analysis document to be very helpful to plan each asset and ensure each met at least one learning objective. It was this document that allowed the theories, design and styling used throughout the project to be developed and detailed. I developed a style guide of colors, graphics, and fonts that would be appropriate for the subject matter and audience to ensure all of the learning objects would maintain continuity. I was also certain to have each piece be minimalistic, ensuring that each graphical element had purpose to prevent any distractions from the content or learning.
To see my final project and other project created during my time at Full Sail University, please visit https://heatherdelagardelle.myportfolio.com/
How has each course contributed to your personal and professional development as an instructional designer? Describe your most outstanding personal triumph in each course.
Mastery: Personal Development and Leadership This course set my expectations for the hard work and dedication it takes to master a craft. It also helped me to envision the year ahead at Full Sail, by allowing me to write down my goals for each upcoming course and my ideas for how I would achieve those goals and excel in the Instructional Design and Technology Master’s Degree. My most outstanding personal triumph was finishing the entire book, Mastery. I was happy that there was audio available for the book to be able to listen on my long commute to and from work.
Strategies for Learner Engagement This course provided a basis of knowledge for several models of instructional design, such as the ADDIE, SAM, Gradual Release and Rapid Prototyping. My most outstanding personal triumph was being able to use my previous graphic design experience to make posters that showcased my newly learned concepts in a way that was both educational and appealing.
Visual and Verbal Communication in Instructional Design This course taught me about how Adobe Illustrator could be used to display information in a more visual way, transitioning data into graphs and charts. I’d had loads of experience with Illustrator prior to this, but rarely have had opportunities to try out the program’s graphing capabilities, so I enjoyed learning something new about a program I’ve used for years.  My most outstanding personal triumph was not just learning about Adobe Illustrator’s data visualization capabilities, but also learning to use Keynote to make the renewable energy presentation.
Corporate Training and Motivational Development This course taught me about creating professional videos, script writing and storyboarding. This was really the first video I’d created in over a few years, so it was challenging to get back into the swing of things, using proper lighting, a green screen and editing. My most outstanding personal triumph was putting together the video to my full satisfaction. This course allowed ample time to plan, produce, and revise. Looking back at my video, I know it’s not perfect, but it really laid the groundwork to me getting back into video production and learning lessons that I applied for the videos I would continue to make during my time at Full Sail.
Instructional Design and Evaluation This course gave me some of the information that I was lacking, creating media for education. It provided a basis for several learning theories such as the Schema Theory and Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction. It also included some best practices for designing learning environments that motivate and compel learners to explore the material. My most outstanding personal triumph was being able to use my love for psychology and previous graphic design experience together to make posters that showcased my newly learned concepts.
Digital Media and Learning Applications This course gave me an opportunity to utilize my experience with coding and how coding can be used to enhance the user experience. My most outstanding personal triumph was creating interesting questions from the NASA video and successfully troubleshooting some of the issues that came with coding the interactive quiz
Music and Audio for Instructional Design This course gave me a deeper understanding of the purpose and use of a audio equalizer. My previous audio knowledge only reached as far as adjusting levels and cutting audio together, so this course pushed me deeper into the audio world. My most outstanding personal triumph was my adaptation of the Brothers Grimm story, “The Straw, The Coal and The Bean”. I altered most of the story so it would be more suitable for children. While it seemed like a really challenging project initially, it was so fun to be able to rewrite the story for children, narrate it and use voices for added interest.
Filmmaking Principles for Instructional Design This course reminded me that good videos can still be created in a DIY environment. With the help of my husband, some can lights and my computer and cell phone as cameras, I was able to create a video that was both professional and educational. My most outstanding personal triumph was allowing this video to really be the foundation for future projects in the program. It was also my first real attempt at a storyboard and that helped me tremendously when I was ready to produce the video.
Game Strategies and Motivation This course taught me more terminology and theory behind the creation of gamified learning experiences. While this course was nothing like I expected, it allowed me to think outside of the box and create a game that could actually benefit the work done at my full time job. My most outstanding triumph was sticking with this course and not getting discouraged when things got tough. While this wasn’t my favorite course, overall, the terminology was what kept me going and I enjoyed learning about the benefits of adding games to a learning experience.
Learning Management Systems and Organization This course showed me that I had a lot of experience with Full Sail’s LMS, but that there were several other LMS environments available. It allowed me to become aware of other features and possibilities that are available in other LMS’s. This was also the first time I personally built a course in an LMS and I’m glad to have that experience. My most outstanding personal triumph was utilizing the video I created in Filmmaking Principles for Instructional Design to be the inspiration for my LMS. It was fun to dig into my love for plants as well and really allow my passion to drive the overall success of my project.
Media Asset Creation This course allowed me to take my interest in health and apply it to an instructional design project. Overall, I learned so much about how planning is imperative to a large project and how each asset must work together to ensure that the project’s learning objectives are being met. My most outstanding personal triumph was researching and compiling all of the data about my chosen topic. My project relied on a lot of data, so ensuring that my resources were reputable and reliable really set the foundation overall. I also enjoyed utilizing a minimal aesthetic style throughout that was complimented on several times.
Instructional Design and Technology Final Project This course helped me to become more familiar with Behance and introduced me to a new Adobe product, Portfolio. I’m also more aware of communities and networks out there where I can learn and connect with other instructional design professionals. My most outstanding personal triumph was seeing all of my hard work from the past year assembled into one place and reflecting on how my dedication has paid off.

Instructional Design & Evaluation
Tumblr media
1) What did you learn from the reading assignment about the field of instructional design that you were not previously aware of? Why is this important to your goal of achieving mastery and your future as an instructional designer?
Lowther and Ross (2012) state, “Technology integration practices are influences by national policies and funding sources” (p. 214).  As a current educator, I see first-hand how national polices and funding have a direct effect on the education system and our youth.  Unfortunately, the goal of educating is not a priority when the higher ups are making decisions.  As funding is cut, class room sizes are growing larger and teacher have access to less and less resources.  If more time and effort were put into the education system, I believe we could produce a better, more engaging educational environment that would be more conducive to learning.
Lowther and Ross (2012) state, “As our nation attempts to address global changes to ensure economic stability…pervasively in education our youth” (p. 214).  This could not be more true.  As we are educating our students based on standardized tests, we are not educating them or preparing them for the real world, life after school. This lack of knowledge process adults that lack financial education, lack how to apply what they learned to real life, and lack how to think critically.  As the adults begin their life in the world, they are creating bad habits that are being passed along to the generations that follow them.
Lowther and Ross (2012) state, “…Two models that have a strong ISD/ID foundation: ASSURE and NTeQ” (p. 210-11).  After reading this section, I realize how this model puts the learning environment into a manageable subject.  As an instructor, I can drill down to the needs of my students by having a model that I can follow.  It will help me to make sure that I am creating objectives and activities that will benefit my students.
2)  If creativity in instructional design refers to the use of special human talents and imagination in generating original ideas, how did you use your creativity to expand your work beyond the limitations imposed in this month’s design projects?
My creativity came from prior knowledge.  Each week I tried to use the applications suggested to complete the given assignment. By the end of each week, I turned to what I was more familiar with to create a better product than the original draft.  I wanted to make the product more engaging and with such a short turnaround time, there was not much room for trial and error.  Given more time, I may have been able to get a better grasp on the new applications.  However, when designing for a client, it will be my duty to work with applications that will allow me to get the job done.
The use of special human talent came in handy when working in a group.  Each of us have strengths and we used to those strengths to create our group project.  Playing to each other’s strengths allowed us to create a presentation more swiftly, rather than everyone stumbling along.  When working in groups it is better to talk about each other’s strengths and weaknesses to see where each can better fit in.  In the end, it will allow for a better flow and creativity because no one person will be stuck doing something that they are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with.

3)  List at least 3 main takeaways from this course and how they may apply to your monthly milestone and long-term goals.
Please note, I do not have monthly milestones, as I did not attend Mastery for this program.
During this month, I learned a lot about the history of instructional design.  Even though this month’s program focused on history, I was able to find some relevant information for today’s use.  Being a high school teacher, has allowed me to see first-hand some of the effect of technology, both good and bad.  During one of our GTTs, I voice my opinion on how technology is beginning to produce students/citizens that have become accustomed to having immediate access to information.  Before technology, students had to research information and build their own opinions. Today, they can find anything they want with the click of a button, no thinking required.
Although the technological portion instructional design does not seem to be a major influence on education (based on the reading), it does present relevant information for me to use today. After reviewing Gagne’s Nine Events, I am able see how I can use it when creating lessons and learning objectives for my students.  The Gradual Release method is one that we currently have in place in my school. Using this information during this course has given me a better understanding of how to implement it in my classroom.
My last takeaway is how to make projects more engaging.  While my projects have some engagement in them, seeing how my peers used some of the same tools has fueled a fire in me.  With each class and each project, I am trying to work outside the box and create something better than before.  I can see my peers’ perspectives in how they created interactions in their projects and can begin integrating that into my own practices.  Everything that I have learned in this class can be used in my future endeavors as teacher and/or when creating content for my business.  I now have a clearer understanding of creating objectives and how to keep the students centered during those objectives.

CBWA BOGOTA
MATCH EVENT: CBWA Wrestle Rock At Sea 3 Pay Pay-per-view Date: Saturday, March 28, 2020 Location: Love Boat off the coast of Colombia
Tumblr media
BOGOTA “TIGER” BUFF VS STEVE BLACKMAN
Tumblr media
Blackman took out Buff early, but Buff came back and worked on Blackman’s injured shoulder. Blackman was injured earlier this week while performing some bail bond work (his other job). Fans were going for the newcomer, Blackman even though Buff’s gotten a lot of chants lately.
Blackman fought back and locked in the sleeper. Buff fought, but fell and Blackman hit a Kick. But instead of pinning him, Blackman went for the choke again. Buff fought again, but eventually passed out and Blackman was awarded the win. Nice finish to a pretty good match.
WINNER: STEVE BLACKMAN
-
JUANITA VS MARYSE
Tumblr media
Juanita and Maryse exchanged grappling attempts until Maryse was able to move into a cross face. Juanita countered with a roll up, but only got a two count. Maryse hit a snapmare and then a kick to the back of Juanita, and Juanita responded with one of her own. Maryse went for an elbow, but Juanita laid down to duck it and rolled Maryse up for a two count.
Maryse was able to get back into it attacking the arm of Juanita. She kept this up for several minutes. Maryse continued with a brutal submission on Juanita, but she managed to make it to the ropes. Maryse slapped the crap out of her, which led to Juanita hitting several strikes to the stomach and then both women exchanged running forearms.
Both women hit double boots and were down. Maryse hit a flying clothesline into the corner and then followed up with double knees to the chest.
Maryse rolled up Juanita, but Juanita kicked out and hit a neckbreaker, a clothesline, and then a big boot before hitting a Jackhammer on Maryse for a two count. Maryse countered a wheelbarrow with a stunner for a two count, and then hit a Colombian suplex for another two count. Maryse hit a Death Valley Driver, but Juanita still managed to kick out.
Maryse hit a flapjack into the top rope and then rolled Juanita up and managed to get the pinfall!
WINNER: MARYSE
BUFFORD PUSSER VS COLOMBIAN DRAGON
Tumblr media
Colombian Dragon tried to do the double footstomp off the ring to the mats on the floor, a new move in his repertoire, but Pusser got out and drilled him with a big boot. They spent a lot of time early just brawling around the ringside area and outside of it, too.
Pusser took off the Colombian Dragon’s shoulder tape (coming off surgery), but the Dragon came back with a Bogota suplex on the big man, with Pusser’s head bouncing against the turnbuckle. Ouch.
The Dragon came back with a snap dragon suplex and reverse rana for a good near fall. Pusser shot back by hitting the Big Stick from the second rope. Pusser then came right back and hit a powerbomb for a near fall.
Pusser threw the Dragon against the ropes but the Dragon came back with a flying forearm, knocking the big man down. The Dragon went to the top and nailed a moonsault for the win.
Really good match!
WINNER: COLOMBIAN DRAGON
SOUTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
IAM VACATED VS BIG BUBBA BOGOTA
Tumblr media
Big Bubba has a choir singing his theme. Hot crowd from the bell, chanting "This is awesome" before they even locked up. The match started with Vacated destroying Bubba on the arena floor for three minutes, but Big Bubba took over back in the ring by back dropping Vacated over the top rope.
Bubba used a schoolboy with his feet on the ropes for a near fall and Vacated used a Sharpshooter near the end. As the two men tied up, Bubba grabbed something from his back pocket and nailed Vacated between the eyes. He then slipped it into his pants.
Vacated struggling to stay up was then the recipient of a Bubba Drop. Bubba covered for the 1-2-3.
WINNER: BIG BUBBA BOGOTA
STREET FIGHT ON A BOAT FRANK CONVERSE VS BOLTSY
Tumblr media
Everyone is banned from ringside according to Ken Resnick.
Frank started the match by pushing into Boltsy, tossing him out of the ring early on and following through to the floor for the brawl. Frank spat water on Boltsy’s Boltsy, but Boltsy recovered for a bit until Frank hit a suplex on the ramp.
Frank brought out a garbage can of weapons, which he slammed on Boltsy’s back. Frank’s first weapon was a crutch while he used a Mexican sombrero. The brawl went into the stage area where Boltsy started going into the crowd, only for Frank to chase after him, choking him across the rafters.
After some brawling around the crowd, Boltsy caught Frank with a kick, sending him down to the floor and back into ringside where Boltsy hit a huge crossbody over the crowd. Boltsy followed up with punches and chops, but Frank came back and dropped him while Boltsy did his apron headstand tricks.
Frank pillmanized Boltsy’s wrist. Frank went for a DDT on the chair, but Boltsy blocked it and did the paper cut on Frank’s forehead, busting him open pretty bad. Boltsy followed with chair shots to the back of Frank. Boltsy then went for a table.
Boltsy went for another chair shot, but Frank kicked it into Boltsy’s face, but was smart enough to follow with an elbow drop on the chair, which probably hurt him more. Frank hit the Bionic Elbow. Frank hit a cutter for a two count.
Frank rushed at Boltsy with a Kendo stick, but Boltsy dodged and took him out with a famouser for a two count. Boltsy started swinging at Frank with the kendo stick until Frank connected with a side Russian leg sweep with the kendo stick. Frank went for the top rope kendo shot, but Boltsy caught him with a kick as he came down. Boltsy continued with paper cuts, but Frank hit the groin claw and a huge DDT for a two count.
Frank whipped Boltsy into a chair in the corner and used the momentum to go and power slam Boltsy into the chair, but he only got a two count. Out came the ladder.
Boltsy hit a Backstabber, went to the top rope, but Frank stopped him. Frank set up the ladder in the middle rope where Frank stood to superplex Boltsy, but Boltsy hit him with his magic stick, dropping Frank onto the ladder. Boltsy followed with The Fold and picked up the win.
WINNER: BOLTSY
OLE ANDERSON VS PN NEWS JR
Tumblr media
The impressive PN News Jr made his return to the ring after taking some time off to nurse an injury and to teach at a local Bogota high school.
Ole has been a regular in the thread over the last month and has looked somewhat rejuvenated. His matches have been very good and his new cross armbar submission hold has been inescapable until now.
Ole went for the move within the first 30 seconds of the match and they did it so well that it looked like total chance that PN News Jr was close enough to the ropes to get his legs over them to break the hold. PN News Jr worked 100 mph before eating a big boot to the outside; Ole stood smoldering and we went to a break.
It was actually pretty impressive what they managed to fit into such a short match. Ole really helped to get PN News Jr over again. They did a cool spot outside where PN News Jr flipped over him into a handstand on the apron and then fell back onto Ole and planted him in a DDT.
PN News Jr tried to finish things off, but Ole rolled out of the way when he came off the top rope. PN News Jr landed on his feet, but Ole wasted no time in locking in his new submission move. This time, PN News Jr managed to stand up to reverse the hold into a cover. Ole released the hold and kicked out at two.
PN News Jr then put Ole in position with a spin kick and came off the top rope with a moonsault for the win.
WINNER: PN NEWS JR
Tumblr media
This match built well as it went along. At first, it was just some decent back and forth but evolved into a pretty good match after Roddie Hart sunk in his double armlock submission.
Klondike took him out, but Roddy came back with a lariat and a senton for a really close near fall. He followed that with the half nelson driver that he calls The Pogey Drop for the win. Really good match.
WINNER: RODDY HART
RICK RUDE VS GREG GAGNE
Tumblr media
Gagne was taken out early, but came back and really took it to Rude, who had great facials as he was selling. Rude came back with this cool kick from the corner and did his own backdrop suplex for a near fall.
Greg got him in the green beret arm bar and laid him out with the backdrop suplex for another near fall. Gagne tried for another, but Rude laid him out with a kick, then another. Gagne slid under Rude and hit him with a dropkick to take him off balance. Gagne then nailed a knee to Rude’s head followed by the brainbuster for the win.
WINNER: GREG GAGNE
BUDDY LANDEL VS RIC FLAIR
Tumblr media
Collar and elbow to start the match, both men seem at the same level. They do a couple of Japanese shoulder tackle challenges to each other until Landel gets the better of the exchange, only for Flair to return with one of his own and send Landel to the outside, where Flair tries to follow, but gets tripped out by Landel.
Both animals brawled outside the ring. Landel accidentally clotheslined the ringpost and ran back in the ring, but Flair was right behind him as he started working over Landel’s arm. Flair took out Landel’s knee and hit a shining wizard for a two count. Flair followed with a twisting moonsault, but Landel moved out of the way. Both men traded chops and Landel started his comeback with clotheslines and a belly-to-belly for a two count. Flair hit a Diamond-giri for a two count. Landel came back with a big Spinerbuster, then set up the figure four, but Tim Horner came down and attacked Landel for the DQ. Landel hit a headbutt sending Horner backwards through the ropes. He then grabbed Flair and applied the figure four. Flair tapped right away but the match was already over. Flair slipped through the bottom rope and Horner helped him to the back. Landel grabbed the microphone and challenged Flair to a LAST MAN STANDING MATCH at CBWA Drugwars in April.
WINNER: BOGOTA LANDEL BY DQ
CBWA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH  MIZ VS YAKUZZA
Tumblr media
Once again, they used live violinists to play Yakuzza’s theme. The match started with a series of leg kicks by both men, which culminated in a hard inner thigh kick by Yakuzza. Yakuzza worked on the knee the bulk of the match, with Miz trying to fend the challenger off with his other foot, including up-kicks to Yakuzza’s face.
Miz seemed to forget that his knee hurt while on offense as he used hard knees to Yakuzza’s ribs. Yakuzza used a Kinshasa from the middle rope, but sold that he landed hard on his head and couldn't make a cover. Miz knee'd the turnbuckle when Yakuzza moved and Yakuzza rolled into Miz's knee to further injure it.
Miz hit a second dropkick to the back of Yakuzza’s head, which sent Yakuzza outside the ring. As Yakuzza attempted to get back into the ring, out came Junaita. She grabbed onto Yakuzza’s leg until he jumped down off the apron to confront her. As this was happening, Miz laughed it off in the ring but Miz turned around to find Maryse standing behind him. She hauled back and slapped Miz across the face.
The referee called for the bell as Miz pleaded with the referee to keep the match going. While Miz had a meltdown Maryse slipped under the ropes and tackled Juanita. They brawled around the ring. Yakuzza with a smile on his face grabbed his belt and headed to the back. Miz still in the ring arguing with the referee had enough and gave the referee a skull crushing finale.
WINNER: YAKUZZA
INFERNO MATCH  EXOTIC EYE OF GIBSON VS BOGOTA ORTON
Tumblr media
Exotic Roberto Gibson came out to the ring with Lupe and Zombie Robert Blake and 2 full grown tigers on leashes. The tigers seemed a bit nervous because of the flames surrounding the ring.
The flames were on the ring apron and they were below the bottom rope except when somebody hit the mat, which led to them shooting up.
Gibson hit Orton with a splash in the corner. Running body attack by Gibson knocked Orton down. Orton was able to hit a sidewalk slam. Lupe was going to give Gibson a kendo stick, but the flames kept going up to prevent Gibson from grabbing it.
Orton knocked down Gibson with a slam. A fireman used a fire extinguisher to stop the fire that was on the kendo stick. Zombie Robert Blake used an extinguisher on the Ring of Fire. It didn’t totally kill it as the flames shot back up. Orton hit a Chokeslam on Gibson and then another one. Lupe & Zombie Robert Blake used a blanket to cover one side of the ring with the flames.
They are a smart bunch of crazy guys. Lupe & Zombie Robert Blake destroyed Orton with a slam and then a big splash.
The ref couldn’t do anything because there were no rules in a match like this.
Gibson hit his drop kick for the victory at 7:49.
Gibson ordered Lupe and Zombie Robert Blake to drag Orton’s body into the flames but security rushed down to the ring and pulled Orton out of harm's way.
Exotic Gibson then ordered them to let the tigers off their leashes. The tigers chased the guards and Orton up the entrance way. One of the guards was pounced on and both tigers bit into his legs as the camera pulled away. Gibson laughed in the ring while stomping and clapping to his theme song.
WINNER: Exotic Gibson
