unicorns exist in the setting of r2g. but they’re weird. of course.

ok so the ‘true’ unicorn (the Eurasian unicorn, aka Capra monoceros) was closely related to the markhor of the himalayas. those two spiral horns evolved to fuse into a single, forward-facing horn. both males and females grew horns, but males’ horns were much larger. they were once widespread across eastern europe, the caucuses, and central asia, but they were hunted to extinction for want of their ‘magical’ horns. it is believed the last one died in the early 1400s.

meanwhile, in north america, there was a similar animal roaming the plains- the North American tusked horse, Equus monoceros, often erroneously referred to as the ‘Wyoming unicorn’. an extant relative of the north american horses of the ice age, the ‘horn’ of the male tusked horse is, in fact, two canine teeth that have curved inward, grown up and out through the hard palate, and spiraled around one another to create a very effective weapon for fighting off predators and rival stallions. unfortunately, due to a combination of climate change and hunting, the tusked horse’s range was already greatly reduced by the time the european settlers showed up. the spanish conquistadors hunted the stallions, again for their horns, disrupting the structure of the wild herds and forcing the wild mares to seek mates within the introduced population of feral horses. these pairings produced fertile hybrids, but the gene for growing tusks is recessive and, according to genetic research, continues to be diluted throughout the north american mustang population.

in 1971, in the red desert of wyoming, a wildlife photographer was able to capture an up close photo of a lone tusked stallion. he was a red dun with a long black mane and ivory tusks. he was unusually tame, allowing the wildlife photographer to get very very close. the photo was published several months later, on the cover of national geographic. two weeks after publication the red desert unicorn was found dead, with his tusks removed. there has not been a single tusked stallion observed since.

Verkehrswende durchsetzen

Radverkehrsplan am Wahlsonntag möglich machen

📷Nachdem wir gestern, etwas am Rande unserer Themenbereiche über den Irsinn des Weiterbaus  der A100 mitten in der Berliner Innenstadt nachgedacht haben, hat uns heute eine Mail von changing-cities.org erreicht. Darin geht es um Erfolge aber auch um Hindernisse auf dem Weg zu einer menschlichen Großstadt. Darin heßt es:

So ist die Tour de Verkehrswende in Berlin angekommen (allerdings nicht mit dem links abgebildeten Rad, cc wikipedia). Gemessen an den Eindrücken aus vielen Städten unterwegs muss sich Berlin nicht schämen. Wir freuen uns über Beschlüsse zu zwölf Kiezblocks in Mitte, wir sehen stabile Bürger*innenenergie bei Demonstrationen für den Wandel und wir haben nun endlich einen Radverkehrsplan. Dieser ist besser als alles zuvor und trotzdem schlechter als erwartet.

Am 7. September 2021 hat der Berliner Senat den Radverkehrsplan in erster Lesung beschlossen. Eigentlich hätte der bereits vergangenen Sommer verabschiedet sein und Qualitäten, Quantitäten sowie Ausbaupfade für die Fertigstellung des Radnetzes bis 2030 festlegen sollen. So waren die Vorgaben des Mobilitätsgesetzes.

Wir ziehen nun ein durchwachsenes Resümee. Einerseits stellt der Plan durchaus einen erheblichen Fortschritt gegenüber allem bisher in Berlin Dagewesenen dar. Es werden Priorisierungen beim Netzausbau vorgenommen, quantitative Ausbau- und Zwischenziele ausgegeben, Maße benannt und – ganz wichtig! – ein Fokus auf das Sicherheitsempfinden gelegt, damit auch diejenigen zum Radfahren ermutigt werden, die sich bislang noch nicht trauen können. Letzteres war eines der zentralen Ziele unserer Initiative Volksentscheid Fahrrad, für das 2016 über 100.000 Menschen unterschrieben haben.

Auf der anderen Seite fehlt dem Plan noch immer eine klare Umsetzungsstrategie. Er kommt weitgehend ohne konkrete Maßnahmenliste aus, was wo genau bis wann auf die Straße gebracht werden soll. An vielen Stellen werden Ausnahmen von den Maßen für die Radwege zugelassen und vor allem fehlt die Benennung der Ressourcen, die notwendig wären, um diese immense Aufgabe strategisch anzugehen und abzusichern. Das ist vor allem der Blockade der SPD zu verdanken.

Changing-cities bedankt sich abschließend bei den "viele tolle und motivierte Mitarbeiter*innen in der Verwaltung, bei SenUVK und in den Bezirken", die die Arbeit zum Radverkehrsplan vorangetrieben haben. Außerdem verweisen sie natürlich auf den weiterhin notwendigen Druck, der nötig sein wird die Beschlüsse durchzusetzen und weiterzuentwickeln.

Ein erster Schritt wird am übernöchsten Wochenende, 18./19. September, sein, wenn n mehr als 130 Städten die Kinderfahrraddemonstrationen zum "Kidical Mass Aktionswochenende 2021"  starten. Pünktlich zur Bundestagswahl werden wieder Zehntausende Kinder und Eltern zu Fuß oder mit dem Fahrrad die Straßen erobern.
