Day #285: Today I Listened to ‘For Once In My Life’ by Stevie Wonder. Talk about a breakneck pace! I don’t like pausing songs on the first listen so I had to type as fast as I could to get down my initial thoughts.
It’s interesting because, with its dense arrangement and schmaltzy modulations, I could see this being a nice down-tempo ballad if you played it at half the speed. It’s easy to miss some of that nuance (like the lovely maj7 chord at 0:37) if you’re not paying attention. But at least this way it’s not generic.
Do harmonica solos work outside of the blues? I suppose it depends whether you like the timbre. But that last note is horribly piercing. I might have to take this song off the end of month-highlights playlist for that one note alone.

1953 - Bear Cat (The Answer To Hound Dog) - aka Walking The Dog by Rufus Thomas. Answer song to Big Mama Thornton's Hound Dog
An answer song, response song or answer record is a song (usually a recorded track) made in answer to a previous song, normally by another artist. The concept became widespread in blues and R&B recorded music in the 1930s to the 1950s. Answer songs were also popular in country music in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, sometimes as female responses to an original hit by a male artist or male responses to a hit by a female artist.
