Confetti are called “Räppli” in Basel as instead of paper confetti, as they used to throw fake money into the masses. As fake money used to oxidise much faster than the coins made out of enough silver or gold, these forged coins got called “Rappen”, so “black horse”. The diminutive then turned this into “Räppli”. In the rest of German speaking Switzerland, “Konfetti” is used

Fasnacht

I am sitting on my balcony on the fifth floor. I can watch the sky and am just a little bit above the classic old-fashioned swiss city apartment blocks in front of me. Yesterday, today and tomorrow are the three days the whole city aim for. Everybody is marching through the city with the bands, so called “cliques”. Some fast and rebellish, with a hard beat and loud trompetes. Some are cute and lovely with triangles and wagons. Families walk after the marching band with blue vests, old masks and playing songs sounding like they are telling stories about old fairytales, glorious victories, joyful days and a new spring setting in. Everybody just lowers the rules, take the days off and just does what they want to. As long as you don’t mess with the happiness and can handle a few “räppli” (tiny paper coins that will haunt your living space forever after you got in touch with some once) you can have a great day. I see people from young to old, everybody is just doing their thing, playing music on the streets and wear costumes. I can’t describe this amazing feeling i’m having right now because the thrill and excitement are spreading through my body. The wind is cold and yesterday it was really rainy. But right now. The sun shines on me. Although i’m alone on my balcony, i’m feeling so happy. It seems as if time stands still for these three days for everybody to have fun and forget a bit about their worries. It’s never silent, i can always hear drums and trumpets, people talking and screaming, “triller” (i’m not sure if it’s the same in english) pipes, clapping and cars. So much movement. I often get … - let’s say worried- … about the people and this planet and the news are often about bad moments and happenings. But this makes me think of how everybody is just trying to make a living at least a bit more joyful.

Play + Object + Exchange ! Come and join us for a playful energy pop-up workshop and arts performance during Fasnacht in front of Theater Basel, exploring the potential aesthetics of abandoned Räppli and finding new perceptions of everyday objects and behaviors.

6 Monday. 14:00- 15:00 pm. 7 Tuesday. 14:00- 15:00 pm. Children’s workshop - Confetti graffiti/drawing on a paper/fabric/clear film etc. - Confetti molding crafts(Balloon, small objects) 8 Wednesday 15:00- 18:00 pm. We are going to have a Finissage from 6:00 to 7:00 pm
