Novel Planning/Writing Programs/Sites
I wrote this mostly for myself as I've used many different things over the years with varying success, but I think it might be useful for others as well. Not sponsored. All below the cut. If you want the TLDR, scroll to the very bottom.
1. Google Docs
Free. Just regular ol' Google Docs for writing and organizing. If you lose a Doc, you can contact Google and they're pretty prompt about getting it back for you if you accidentally delete something and then empty your trash.
For writing, it helps to get one folder and then have a bunch of folders inside that folder for drafts. It also helps to make one Doc that's just for background information you might need or for outlining. For this, I've just made tables or used Google's built-in outlines. However, this is the model of an eleven year old and it can get pretty messy trying to keep track of too much.
2. Airtable
Free with paid version available. Not for writing, but good for organizing. There's a novel template as well. I like that you can link records together. I've been using it for awhile for things like species, scenes, locations, etc.
For family trees, I recommend changing the view from "Grid view" to "Kanban" and categorizing it by "Generation" (Gen 1, etc). This works really well for planning things out and world building in general. You can add images really easily as well. It's very user intuitive and I recommend playing around with categories and fields until you get it to your liking. Btw, if you sign up with the above link I get referral credit on the site! I'd appreciate it if this post proves helpful.
3. Notebook.ai
Free with paid version available. This is one of those programs that's technically free, but you need to pay for it to be really usable in some respects. I really like how it organizes characters and asks you questions that prompt you to think more about your character. Same with locations. So it's great for characters and locations, but not for stuff like species or races. If you want to write fantasy, I would not use this alone (but I would take a look to see if any of the questions help you with world-building or characterization). I'd use it in conjunction with something like Airtable.
4. novelWriter
Free. This offline software is great for novel-writing! You can move chapters around which is nice. It has all your work in this nice lil' collapsable list. It also has options for you to note stuff about the plot, characters, location, etc at the bottom. Not super user intuitive, but it's not very hard to figure out and their site can help you out. Also, the next several are very similar to novelWriter (similar features and are not browser-based), but with more features.
5. Manuskript
Free. Same as above, but it includes an analyzer that can tell you how often you used a word or phrase. It also has some neat features like a distraction-free mode you can customize and a novel assistant–though I have not used that feature. The devs recommend having backups because it's still in early development. However, you should have backups regardless. I’ve personally had some issues losing progress and my .msk file not loading completely within the program. I’m trying to play around and find a solution, but I might lose motivation since I haven’t had this issue with Quoll or novelWriter.
6. Quoll Writer
Free. Great for novel writing. It also has bonus features like a fullscreen distraction free mode you can configure and a guide meant to identify problems with your writing. You can easily do text annotations as well. It has stats to view your productivity AND an editor mode that includes sharing with others. There is also a warm-up feature that comes complete with writing prompts, though I’ve never used this feature.
7. Atomic Scribbler a.k.a SmartEdit Writer
Free. Great for novel writing, especially if you're super used to Microsoft Word. It has the same look and feel, so if you're considering transitioning, this is a great fit. Just like the ones above, it lets you go chapter by chapter and scene by scene so you can easily view your novel and rearrange it to your liking. Disclaimer that I have not used this because I hate Microsoft Word so much it's unreal.
8. yWriter
Free. yWriter seems pretty similar to novelWriter, but is only for Windows. I have Mac, so I haven’t tried this one but it looks nice and uncomplicated.
9. NovelEasy
Free. Browser-based, so you can use this if you have a ChromeBook (4-8 require Mac or Windows to run). It has a similar set up and some similar features, but it goes by chapters, not chapters and scenes. However, it does still have the option to see your daily progress with word count, time spent writing, etc. Disclaimer that I have not used this, but it looks like a good alternative if you can't run the aforementioned programs.
I haven't tried Scrivener (since it's paid), but I've heard good things about it. I'm not sure if there's anything included you couldn't get elsewhere for free. Campfire is free, but I'm unsure if it's free like Airtable or like Notebook. If I check it out, I'll update this post with my thoughts on it.
TLDR: What I’ve been using to write is Airtable (#2 on the list) for worldbuilding, characters, and outlining, Google Docs (#1) for at least the first draft, and novelWriter (#4) for the second draft onward since it’s so much easier to move scenes around and see what else you need to edit.

Hoseok stands alone in his salon staring down at the requested items Jungkook brought home. A wide tooth comb, a detangling brush, a large pack of black rubber bands, a child sized shower cap and a single silk bonnet that Hoseok will have Taehyung resize a little later before bedtime. Pursing his lips, Hoseok scans the labels of shampoos and conditioners, thinking of which would be best to help him keep as much as Imani’s hair as possible. Sadly, Hoseok doesn’t have many clients that like to keep their natural curls. Often coming in for touches up on their straight perms, so he’s a little rusty in the curl department. However, Hoseok is positive that Imani has 3b hair which needs a lot of lightweight hydration. Going over his game plan in his mind, Hoseok grabs a sulfate-free shampoo and finds a deep conditioner that he thinks will work best for Imani.
Later, when Hoseok has some time, he will sit down and order a few products just for Imani to better take care of her hair. Hoseok glances at his supply closet and tries to recall if he still has a manikin head to practice on. He is sure that braiding is just like riding a bike, it’s something that you can’t forget once you learn…but just to be on the safe side, Hoseok would like to study and practice a few styles. Setting up his station, Hoseok grabs a booster seat for Imani to sit on and double checks everything before he shoots Seokjin a text to let him know everything is ready.
While he waits for Seokjin to bring Imani down to the shop, Hoseok scrolls through his Spotify to find the perfect playlist to help Imani relax. Jimin shared with everyone that Imani’s mother was a Broadway singer, so he thinks maybe Imani might like a Broadway playlist. Seokjin’s voice catches his attention and Hoseok sets his phone down.
The salon is completely closed off from the upper levels, a decision that Yoongi readily agreed to for the safety of his pack. They never knew what strangers were capable of and no one wanted to give Seokjin and Hoseok’s clients access to their home. The elevator is passcode protected and is hidden away in the laundry room for an extra safety measure.
Seokjin walks out from the back of the salon with Imani in his arms, her little face tucked in the crook of his neck as she scents him lightly. Rubbing her back softly, Seokjin smiles weary at Hoseok unsure if this is going to work. Seokjin would like nothing more than to keep all of Imani’s hair, but he cannot fathom how Hoseok will manage it. Seokjin tried and he failed to find Imani’s ears in all the knots and curls. Hoseok smiles and cranes his neck trying to see Imani’s face.
“Hey, pretty girl.” Hoseok tickles Imani’s side and the little girl wiggles in Seokjin’s arms, her body twisting, as she pulls away from Seokjin’s neck with a giggle. “Are you all ready to get that hair washed?” Hoseok smooths a large hand over Imani’s bird nest and the little girl pouts. “Awe.” Hoseok mimics Imani’s pouting lips before he reaches out and carefully takes Imani from Seokjin’s arms. “What's that face for, pretty?”
Imani’s little fists ball the collar of Hoseok’s striped shirt tightly and she whines, “Gonna hurt?”
Hoseok frowns at Imani’s question. As much as he wants to tell her it won’t hurt, he cannot guarantee that, but he can promise to try his best. Hoseok bounces Imani up higher in his arms, holding her better so that they can look each other in the eyes.
“Seokie promises to try his best. Can you trust me, pretty girl?”
Seokjin watches the interaction and folds his hand together, twisting his fingers around as he chews on his bottom lip. Hoseok shoots him a comforting glance and puts his focus back on Imani.
“Jinnie is going to be here the whole time, okay? We can stop if you don’t like it.” Hoseok takes his time as he tries to soothe Imani’s fears. He may not be able to smell her but the worry melting from Seokjin’s face tells Hoseok that his words might have worked. Imani looks at the large sink behind Hoseok and she nods her head giving Hoseok permission to wash her hair.
Hoseok sets Imani down in the booster seat and grabs a tan towel before he drapes it over Imani’s shoulders and clips it together in the front. Grabbing a sage green cape, Hoseok quickly puts that over Imani’s shoulder and fastens it behind her neck to make sure her clothing stays clean and dry. He turns on the water, checking that it’s not too cold or hot before he tilts Imani back. Her head rests snugly against the neck rest and Hoseok grabs his phone, “What music do you like, Imani? Broadway?”
Imani’s eyes glitter at the mention of Broadway and Hoseok smiles, pressing play on the child-friendly playlist he chose. ‘He Lives In You (Reprise)’ from the Lion King starts to play and Imani chirps happily making Hoseok beam in delight. Hoseok quickly pulls an apron over his head and shoves two handfuls of hair clips into one of the pockets before he grabs the wide tooth comb and starts to gently search for Imani’s ears. Hoseok must be extra careful not to get water in the animal ears or hurt them with his comb. Seokjin sits beside Imani and starts to sing along to the song softly making Imani giggle.
The light pressure of the comb and Hoseok fingers makes Imani melt in her seat. She always loved when her mother did her hair. The scalp scratches and ear pats were lovely. Not to mention the scent of all the different products her mother used, they always smelled sweet. Hoseok lets out a small cry of victory as he finds one of Imani’s pitch-black ears and carefully clips the hair away before he searches for the other one. Doing the same thing to the other ear, Hoseok pulls out two small ear caps and places them over Imani’s ears. Imani’s ears twitch from the sudden feeling of plastic on her ears, the little crinkling making it hard to focus on Seokjin’s singing while Hoseok mutters to himself.
Imani mewls lowly and Seokjin grabs her hand, holding onto it gently. His thumb stokes over Imani’s little fingers and Hoseok tests the water one last time. “Okay, pretty girl. I’m going to wet your hair now…” Hoseok lifts the sprayer and eases it over Imani’s head, slowly wetting her hair in sections so that he doesn’t add extra weight to her head.
“Wouldn’t it be better for me to hold her?” Seokjin offers as he eyes Imani’s ears leaning in his direction.
“Let me wash her hair first, Hyungie.” Hoseok smiles softly at Seokjin. “I think she’ll fall asleep halfway through the wash, anyway.” Hoseok’s eyes crinkle as he smiles, watching as Imani fights to keep her eyes open.
Seokjin’s heart pinches at the sight and he can’t help but coo as Imani yawns, a small squeak slipping out towards the end. Setting the sprayer down, Hoseok pumps some detangler into his hand and rubs them together. Keeping his movements in time to the beat of whatever song is playing from the speakers, Hoseok starts to work the detangler into Imani’s hair, starting at the back of her head. Reaching over, Hoseok picks up the detangling brush and gently starts to work out the knots in Imani’s hair. Imani’s fingers flex in Seokjin’s hold and he watches as all the tension on Imani’s body seemingly dissolves with each untangled knot.
Imani blinks slowly, her vision starting to waver as the soothing tug and pull of the brush combined with Hoseok’s fingers make Imani’s skin tingle. Hoseok detangles Imani’s hair, section by section, keeping his eyes on the sleepy little girl in front of him. He steps back for a short moment to change the playlist to something less busy, opting for Disney lullabies. A familiar beat plays, soft and calming before Phil Collins’ voice starts to croon the well-known lyrics of ‘You’ll Be In My Heart’ from Tarzan. Tapping his foot, Hoseok sings along and Seokjin joins in, their voices wrapping Imani in an invisible warm, weighted blanket of overwhelming affection and serenity. Imani yawns once more and she drifts off to sleep with a quiet purr rumbling in her chest.
Seokjin shifts in his seat and pulls a leg up towards his chest while still holding onto Imani’s hand. He rests his chin on his knee and watches her sleeping figure. “How can she be so perfect?” Seokjin whispers, his eyes bright in wonder and Hoseok starts to rinse the detangling cream from Imani’s hair.
“I think you’re just smitten, hyung.”
Seokjin’s ears on top of his head swivel slightly at Hoseok words and Seokjin smiles, “Yeah...I guess I am.”
Hoseok snickers and glances at his phone to check the time, “Hyung…can we reschedule Imani’s appointment? This is going to take a while.”
Seokjin watches as Hoseok starts to shampoo Imani’s hair, taking his time to wash each of the four sections separately and Seokjin agrees, this is going to take a while. Pulling his phone from his pocket, Seokjin takes a minute long video of Hoseok washing Imani’s hair before he sends it to the group chat followed by four heart eye emojis. His, as well as Hoseok’s phone goes off with different emojis that makes Seokjin smile.
Seokjin - We’re gonna be a while
Seokjin - Hobie says to reschedule the appointment
Seokjin watches as many text bubbles pop up before Yoongi is the first to respond with a simple okay.
“What did they say?” Hoseok questions, unable to look at his phone as he washes Imani’s hair.
“Yoongi will have Namjoon reschedule it for tomorrow.”
“Great…now I can really take my time!”
Grabbing the sprayer once again, Hoseok rinses Imani’s hair and starts to brush a deep conditioning mask onto it layer by layer and section by section. Grabbing the detangling brush, Hoseok again starts to detangle Imani’s hair, starting at the ends and going closer to her scalp. Once that’s done, Hoseok does a two-strand twist on the four sections of Imani’s hair.
“How long will that take?” Seokjin watches as Hoseok easily gathers Imani’s hair in his hands and skillfully places it all inside a plastic cap made for hybrids that have ears on top of their heads.
“Give me a hand, hyung?” Hoseok motions towards Imani’s sleeping body and Seokjin is quick to lift her into his arms, making sure not to let her head loll backwards as he walks over to the hooded dryer.
“Given the amount of hair that she has, I’m thinking 45 minutes, give or take a few if Imani doesn’t sit still.”
Seokjin nods his head and sits down in the chair with Imani in his lap. He gently wakes her up and smiles at her pouty lil face. “Hi, pup.” Seokjin nuzzles his nose against Imani’s and hums in delight as wild sunflowers stretch out wide in his heart. “Seokie is going to put a hair dryer on, okay? It won’t be too loud. It’s made for our ears.”
Imani’s lower lip starts to tremble, and Seokjin shushes her while patting her lower back, “You can go back to sleep.” Bringing Imani’s nose to his scent gland, Seokjin pushes out a little more of his lavender scent and Imani’s body relaxes in his arms. “Good girl…that’s my good cria.” Seokjin nods for Hoseok to get the dryer set up and Hoseok moves quickly. Easily placing the flexible hood over Imani’s head, making sure her ears won’t be crushed as he lowers the hood. There are two holes in the hood for Imani’s ears to be comfortable and free from the heat. As Hoseok starts up the dryer, Imani whines and tries to bury her face into Seokjin’s neck, and she starts to fuss when she can’t.
Bringing his hand upward, Seokjin boops Imani on the nose and leaves his wrist by her nose. Imani’s eyes flutter open and her head falls into Seokjin’s hand before she smiles and goes back to sleep. Turning the TV on, Hoseok puts on the k-drama that he knows Seokjin is in the middle of catching up on. He makes sure that the closed captions are on, so that Seokjin can follow in case he can’t hear and starts to clean up the wash station a little bit.
Upstairs in Yoongi’s office, Namjoon sits with a phone pressed to his ear. Having to reschedule Imani’s doctor’s appointment isn’t that big of a deal. One day isn’t going to hurt, but since she is a rare hybrid that is currently in foster care, their wiggle room isn’t much. Namjoon sighs and hangs up, rubbing his temples. From the other side of his desk, Yoongi chuckles, “Welcome to parenthood.” His voice is flat as he stares at Namjoon and Namjoon rolls his eyes.
“Tomorrow at 10 sharp. Do you want me to go?” Namjoon slips his phone into his pocket and stands, looking at Yoongi.
“I’ll go. I know you have a zoom meeting at 9.” Namjoon narrows his eyes and Yoongi smirks. “Not getting out of work that easily, Joon-ah.”
Back in the salon Hoseok offers to get Seokjin something to drink and Seokjin shakes his head, lost in his own world as he pats Imani’s butt in a steady rhythm subconsciously to the beat of whatever song is playing. Hoseok grins to himself and snaps a photo of Seokjin and Imani. He keeps it for himself, choosing not to share it with the group. Imani is small, but in Seokjin’s arms she looks so, so tiny. It makes Hoseok worry about Imani’s upcoming doctor’s appointment.
Will everything be okay? Will she need shots? Oh, God! What if Imani needs shots? Hoseok feels faint just thinking about it. He hates needles and wherever he gets stabbed always hurts so much worse the day after. Shaking the thought from his head, Hoseok goes to the first floor to grab a few snacks in case Imani or Seokjin get peckish later while they're down in the salon.
The elevator doors open, and Hoseok is greeted with the shouts of Taehyung and Jungkook as they fight over who is winning in Mario Kart. Jimin is in the kitchen making a smoothie and smiles when Hoseok enters.
“How’s it going?” Jimin takes a pause in cutting up some fruit and Hoseok makes a face.
“She has a lot of hair. Thankfully I was able to save it. Only a little came out from detangling, but nothing to worry about.”
“Are you going to trim it?”
“Yeah. I want to give her hair as much of a healthy restart as possible.”
“Smoothie?”
“Na. Do we have any coffee left?”
Jimin points to the coffee machine on the counter and Hoseok sighs in relief seeing that there are a few k cups left of espresso. He cannot wait to down a large, iced Americano. Grabbing himself a huge tumbler, Hoseok fills it halfway with ice before he places it under the nozzle of the machine. Placing a k cup inside and pressing the Americano button, Hoseok grabs some cream from the fridge and pours a small amount into the other side of the machine to make cold foam.
“Being fancy today, huh, hyung?” Jimin jokes and Hoseok rolls his eyes as he puts together his drink, quickly making one for Seokjin as well; making sure to add four tablespoons of sugar to his. “How fast did she fall asleep?”
“I don’t even know, babe.”
Jimin coos as Namjoon walks down the steps and heads right for the duo. “Having any luck?” Namjoon asks as he places a hand on both Jimin and Hoseok’s lower back, pecking their cheeks.
“Once I wash the mask out, I’ll hand dry the hair and trim it before I style it.”
“Oh!” Jimin’s eyes shine with wonder and promise. “What are you going to do?”
Hoseok frowns at Jimin’s question. He didn’t think that far ahead. Now is a good time to look for some idea as to what might work.
“Would you like to help me find a style?” Hoseok offers and Jimin’s whole face lights up, his eyes turning into tight crescent moons from how hard he’s smiling.
“Can’t wait to see what you do, Hobi.” Namjoon kisses Hoseok’s forehead and walks off to see what Taehyung and Jungkook are doing.
Standing together in the kitchen, Jimin and Hoseok scroll through their phones, showing each other different styles that might work for Imani. Jimin shouts in surprise when they show each other the same hair style and Hoseok nods his head impressed. It’s a very simple style but gives a lot of wiggle room if later Imani would like bows or barrettes in it. Hoseok gathers his drink along with Seokjin’s and Jimin loads him up with two containers filled with snacks. Back in the salon, Hoseok smiles seeing that Seokjin is still patting away at Imani’s butt with his eyes closed. His movements are slowed, so Hoseok knows that Seokjin is well on his way to falling asleep.
“Hyung,” Hoseok calls Seokjin and the older male picks his head up. Eyes squinted as he turned his head in Hoseok’s direction. “I made you an Americano.” Hoseok sets the containers down and walks over with Seokjin’s drink in hand. He gives it to him and checks how much time is left on the dryer. Ten minutes won’t hurt. Turning the dryer off, Hoseok scoops Imani into his arms and carries her over to the sink once again. He wakes her up softly and Imani yawns as she rubs at her eyes with a closed fist. “Would you like some juice, pretty girl?” Hoseok asks and Imani nods her head.
Hoseok gives Imani a juice box from the container and is ready if she needs help opening it (she does not). He allows for Imani to finish her drink while he fiddles around with the water temperature again for the sink. Helping Imani lean back, Hoseok rinses her hair and wrings out the extra water before he jumps into trimming her hair. He takes an inch off, happy that Imani’s hair seems to be in much better shape after the hair mask. Taking his time, Hoseok starts to oil her scalp and apply moisturizer to Imani’s damp hair before blow drying it by hand using warm air. While blow drying Imani’s hair, Seokjin gives her a bag of chips and Imani vibrates in her seat happily as she munches away.
“Okay, you ready?” Hoseok asks as he grabs his rat tail comb. “Tell me if I’m pulling too hard, okay?”
Hoseok sections Imani’s hair into three sections, two squares in the front and the back is one large section. Using hair cream, Hoseok slicks down the first section of hair and brushes it into a ponytail that keeps in place with a black rubber band before he quickly braids the hair. He does the same for the other square and tugs the braids to the back of Imani’s head where he brushes the ends into another ponytail that he leaves out in all its curly glory. Grabbing the gel, Hoseok tames Imani’s baby hairs just like he saw in the picture making sure he lays any flyaway hairs down with mousse before he ties three pieces of wrap paper onto Imani’s head making sure her edges are covered.
“Are you done?” Seokjin asks in between a bite of banana chips.
“Once Imani is done with her snack we’ll be done.” Hoseok helps Imani down from the chair and she runs over to Seokjin to see what he’s eating. Hoseok laughs and goes about cleaning up after himself while the other two enjoy their snacks together.
“All done!” Imani shouts as she wipes her mouth the back of her hand and Seokjin tsks his tongue with a frown on his face.
“Napkin, Imani!” Seokjin scolds and Imani hurries over to Hoseok, ignoring Seokjin as he wipes the crumbs from the table into his hand.
Finished with his cleaning, Hoseok lifts Imani into the seat and carefully pulls the wrap paper undone. He tosses them into the trash can underneath his station and smiles at Imani. “Ready to see your hair?”
“Yesh! Is it pwetty?”
A large heart-shaped smile graces Hoseok’s lips, and he turns the chair around to show Imani her new hair style. Imani stares at her reflection with her mouth wide open, her black ears on display on either side of the braids.
“Whoa!” Imani turns her head from side to side trying to see the back of her head and Hoseok holds up a smaller mirror, showing Imani the large ponytail that sits at the base of her head a few inches above the nape of her neck.
“You like it?” Hoseok can’t help but to ask and Imani nods her head excitedly.
“Pwetty!” Imani jumps from the chair into Hoseok’s arms making him laugh and hug her tightly as she wraps her little arms around his neck. “You the bestest!” Hoseok’s face heats up at Imani’s words and Seokjin is sniffling, dabbing his eyes with the sleeve of his shirt. Imani looks over at Seokjin and grins, “Look it, Jinnie! Look it!”
Sitting in the waiting room of a hospital in the pediatric ward, Yoongi keeps his sunglasses on as he watches Imani sit in Seokjin’s lap while he reads Not So Different by Cyana Riley. It’s one of the five books that Imani packed in her comfort bag that Seokjin insisted on bringing. It’s filled with a soft blanket that the pack has scented, noise canceling headphones, two change of clothes, lollipops, water, and sunglasses, along with basic medicine and band aids. Imani is wearing a cute yellow short sleeve shirt that has white daisies on it with a denim button up cami on top that is styled like overalls if someone just wanted to wear the top half. The top is paired with a simple pair of jeans and yellow rain boots that have white hearts on them. Hoseok made sure to put white ribbons in Imani’s hair too. The medium sized bows make her look so stinking cute!
It was a long night for Yoongi. He put off his workload long enough and stayed up longer to get a decent portion done before sunrise. Anyone can tell with just one look into his eyes. They are normally chestnut brown with black circular pupils but today they are darker with black slits for his pupils. Yoongi isn’t self-conscious about his eyes, but having Imani with him, Yoongi doesn’t want any unwanted attention.
Imani giggles as Seokjin kisses her cheek, tucking her head underneath his chin to hide away from more kisses. Yoongi stares, taking the two of them in before he frowns. Seokjin has fallen into this parenting role so naturally that it makes Yoongi’s heart feel as though someone has ripped it out, dunked it in lava and poured acid on it before shoving it back into his chest. As much as they have always talked about adopting, Yoongi never really thought much of it. Looking at Seokjin with Imani, Yoongi wonders if Seokjin hid his true pain from him and if so for how long? Shaking the thought from his head, Yoongi turns his head at the sound of a door opening in the distance.
“Kim Imani?” A nurse calls out Imani’s name and Yoongi stands up, offering to carry the bag for Seokjin while he follows the nurse with Imani in his arms. “Aren’t you a cutie!” The nurse smiles at Imani, wiggling her fingers in a friendly hello. The nurse leads the family to a room that has large purple and green star stickers on it. They step inside and the nurse motions for Seokjin to set Imani down. “Remove your shoes and hop on up, dear.”
Imani giggles as Seokjin removes her rain boots and sets her down on the scale. The nurse quickly takes down Imani’s weight before she pulls down a metal bar to measure Imani’s height. After the height and weight check, the nurse asks a few questions as Seokjin sets Imani on the patient's bed. He holds Imani’s hand and smiles as Imani answers the nurse’s questions about what kind of hybrid she is, along with her age and favorite color (green). Checking Imani’s blood pressure, the nurse turns her attention to Seokjin and Yoongi.
“Any concerns that you have after Imani shifted? Has she voiced any discomfort?”
“I just want to make sure that she’s okay,” Seokjin scratches lightly behind Imani’s ears as he speaks. “She didn’t shift for about a month in total and at her age…” Seokjin’s face falls at the thought of anything being wrong with Imani and the nurse nods her head understanding.
“I’ll inform Doctor Choi and she will discuss your concerns in more depth. From what I’ve seen so far, Imani is underweight for her height and weight percentage, but that’s to be expected without shifting regularly for proper meals.” The nurse smiles at Imani and grabs her clipboard. “Doctor Choi will be with you shortly to explain the next steps.”
Alone in the room, Yoongi shifts the bag in his lap and sets it onto the floor beside him while Seokjin sits on the bed with Imani.
“Lollipop?” Imani requests looking over at Yoongi and Seokjin chuckles as he shakes his head.
“Be a good girl and you can have a lollipop when we leave.”
Imani pouts at that but nods her head, nonetheless. She fiddles with the bracelet on Seokjin’s wrist and sings a made-up song, filling the room with a scent of an endless field of sunflowers. There is a knock at the door, and it opens three seconds later. A small woman standing around five foot three steps into the room and shuts the door behind her. Yoongi takes notice of the reddish orange tail and when he looks at the woman’s face, he sees two small striped triangles on top of her head. No distinguishing scent is coming from Doctor Choi thanks to the scent blockers and Yoongi is thankful. He isn’t too sure how Imani would react to another hybrid’s scent that she doesn’t know.
Imani sees the doctor and her eyes widen, “Kitty!” Imani is delighted by the sight of the doctor and Seokjin is quick to grab her around her waist before she falls off the bed.
Doctor Choi smiles and sits down on a black stool with wheels. “Hello, Imani! I am a kitty, a red tabby! Neat huh?” Doctor Choi wiggles her tail and Imani giggles as she tries to wiggle her own tail just like the doctor. “Now, I hear you haven’t shifted in a while. You must have been really scared, yeah?”
Imani nods her head slowly at the doctor’s words and scoots closer to Seokjin. “Well, we’re all very happy to see your honey. Can I give you an examination?”
“What that?”
Doctor Choi grins and grabs a few tools from the wall behind herself. She takes her time in explaining everything that she is doing to Imani, using Seokjin as the model first before doing it again on Imani. Yoongi is impressed, he has never seen a doctor with such an open and friendly personality. Doctor Choi looks over Imani’s chart and double checks the notes left behind from the nurse before she turns her attention to Seokjin and Yoongi.
“We’ll have to do a full work up with it being so long in between Imani’s last shift. Looking at the files from her pediatrician, Imani is also due for her fifth dose of DTaP and IPV as well as her second dose of Varicella.”
Yoongi presses his lips into a thin line at the news. He may not know what everything is, but he’s counting a total of three shots so far. Seokjin’s face is a little green, he knew there was a chance of Imani needing shots but not that many. Doctor Choi pats Seokjin’s knee, “Don’t worry, you can hold her while she gets them. We’ll also draw two b-l-o-o-d samples. One from her finger and the other from her forearm.”
Seokjin might just faint. Blood? They want to draw blood from his baby girl? No, no. No. Seokjin doesn’t like the sound of that at all and his scent starts to dampen, mildew starting to come to the surface.
Doctor Choi offers Seokjin a kind smile, she’s been doing this for years. She can understand how scary it all might sound to the parent. “Today there are going to be a lot of tests for Imani. Because of how rare her animal counterpart is, we need to make sure that all our bases are covered and nothing is going on internally.”
“W-what else is there?” Seokjin’s voice is strained as he glances down at Imani who is starting to fuss beside him.
“The basic procedures. A CT scan, a movement, sight, and hearing test. Depending on the results we might need to do more, but these tests are simple and will be stress free for Imani.”
Seokjin doesn’t believe Doctor Choi at all. A CT scan doesn’t sound stress free at all.
“Thank you, Doctor.” Yoongi is quick to dismiss the woman and she leaves the room, giving Imani one last smile. “Hyung.” Yoongi’s voice is firm as he warns Seokjin to rein it in. His scent is starting to make Imani finicky, and it will be harder for everyone to do their jobs.
“Jin-ie?” Imani crawls into Seokjin’s lap and Yoongi watches as Imani wraps her tail around Seokjin’s wrist. Her fresh sunflower scent slowly decaying, and Seokjin is quick to pull himself from his thoughts, his scent heavy and soothing as he forces the lavender to wrap around Imani tightly.
Yoongi watches Seokjin closely as he starts to nuzzle his nose into Imani’s hair, breathing in deeply to drown himself in her scent as he self-soothes. Imani giggles as Seokjin’s puff of air tickles her ears and she buries her face into his neck, nosing at his scent gland.
“One test at a time, Hyung.” Yoongi folds his arms across his chest and blinks slowly behind his sunglasses. “I’m sure they will let you stay by her side the whole time. No one wants to harm Imani or put her through any more stress.”
Seokjin sighs, he knows that. He understands that completely but looking down at the little girl in his arms, Seokjin’s omega is crying. What if she gets scared? What if something goes wrong and they take Imani from him forever? Seokjin tightens his arms around Imani and kisses the top of her head. No. Nothing is wrong, everything will be okay. They will do their tests, the results will come back negative for whatever and they will leave the hospital together, all three of them. There is a soft knock at the door before it opens and the same nurse from before smiles, clearly not able to scent the room since she’s human. Yoongi wonders if it was wise to have her work with them.
“We need Imani to change into a gown, please keep her underwear and socks on.” The nurse offers Seokjin a colorful gown that looks like it will swallow Imani whole. “I’ll give you a few moments before we head to the ENT department.”
The testing goes relatively fast in Yoongi’s opinion. Imani took part in an obstacle course in her human and animal form, played a few games while answering questions and she didn’t waver at having to be separated from Seokjin. Though Yoongi suspects that because Seokjin was within sight the whole time. The only issue they had was when Imani needed to get the CT scan and Seokjin wasn’t allowed to be with her. Yoongi smelt Seokjin’s anxiety as if it were a custom perfume rolling off Seokjin in waves as they waited for the CT scan to be finished. Once that was done, all that was left was for Imani to get her vaccines and blood drawn.
Back in the room, Seokjin sits with Imani in his lap whispering sweet nothing to the small child as he rocks from side to side. He knows what’s coming and he wishes that he could just run away with Imani and never have her feel the pain that is to come.
“Do you need me to hold her?” Yoongi questions and Seokjin’s heart is at war with his mind. He wants to comfort Imani, hold her through whatever pain is sure to be felt, but Seokjin knows the moment he sees those needles he will lash out at the nurse. Silently, Seokjin nods his head, and he nuzzles his nose into Imani’s hair, once again breathing in deep lung fulls of her scent to soothe himself.
“Go to Yoongi, Imani.” Imani stares at Yoongi, her large brown eyes skeptical as her tail tightens around Seokjin’s wrist. Seokjin kisses the top of Imani’s head and rubs her back. “Go on pup. Alpha won’t hurt you.”
Yoongi sighs and removes the sunglasses from his face. He looks Imani right in her eyes and she shrinks back into Seokjin’s chest.
“Imani, come here.” Yoongi’s voice is firm, and he refuses to look away as she tries to curl into Seokjin’s soul. “Now.” Yoongi’s eyes flash a fluorescent yellow and Seokjin’s body tenses as Yoongi’s scent of fresh laundry shifts, smelling like it’s been left out in a thunderstorm. Imani deflates in Seokjin’s arms and slinks down onto the floor with her head down. “Jin-ie just needs to use the bathroom,” Yoongi lies and Seokjin is quick to jump to his feet. A knock at the door catches their attention and Seokjin nibbles on the skin of his bottom lip. “Go.”
The door opens and as the nurse comes in, Seokjin hurries out with a rushed apology. The nurse looks over at Yoongi who is now holding Imani and her eyes widen with a gasp at the sight of his eyes. “Oh!” The nurse’s face warms and she quickly apologies. “I-I’m sorry I didn’t realize you were a hybrid as well.”
Yoongi blinks slowly and shifts Imani on his lap, putting her onto his right thigh. “Can you do everything from here or should I move?” Yoongi questions choosing to ignore the ignorant comment from the nurse.
“T-The bed, please. You may still hold her.”
Yoongi secures his hold on Imani and stands, walking the short distance to the bed and sitting down with her back in his lap. Imani is facing outwards with her back pressed into Yoongi’s stomach and chest, her ears twitch and smack him in the face as the nurse pulls three needles from her pocket. Seeing the needles, Imani whimpers and tries to jump from Yoongi’s lap but his hold around her waist is strong.
“Easy, pup.” Yoongi forces his scent down on Imani heavily and Imani’s tail wraps loosely around Yoongi’s slender wrist. “Alpha is here. I’m right here.” Yoongi repeats his words over and over, rubbing the side of his thumb against Imani’s knee as the nurse carefully takes hold of Imani’s left arm and starts to clean the crook of her elbow with an alcohol pad. Imani presses herself flush against Yoongi’s chest, her heart pounding so harshly in her body that Yoongi can feel it from behind. Rancid water and decaying happiness drifts to the surface of Imani’s scent slowly and Yoongi frowns. Using his free hand, Yoongi grabs one of Imani’s hands and starts to drum a beat softly into her palm.
“Imani?” Yoongi’s voice is soft as he calls to the little girl in his lap, shaking like a leaf in a harsh breeze. “Do you wanna build a snowman? Come on, let's go and play!” Yoongi keeps his focus on the sound of Imani’s heart beat but he doesn’t miss the way the nurse freezes at his words. “I never see you anymore. Come out the door. It's like you've gone away!” Yoongi continues to tap the beat into Imani’s hand as he sings the popular song ‘Let It Go’ from that Frozen movie that Jungkook and Hoseok are strangely in love with.
The nurse pricks Imani’s arm with the long needle and Imani hardly feels a thing, completely engrossed with Yoongi’s deep, timbering voice as he sings above her head. Keeping up with the distraction, the nurse easily fills two small glass beakers with Imani’s blood and removes the needle. Cleaning the spot and placing a small smiley face sticker on it. The nurse slides Imani’s gown upwards to reveal the right thigh.
“It gets a little lonely all these empty rooms. Just watching the hours tick by...” Yoongi continues to sing as the nurse cleans Imani’s thigh.
“Tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock!” Imani joins in on the singing, giggling as Yoongi makes the clicking sound with his tongue. The nurse gives Imani her vaccination and puts matching band aids over the small wounds.
“All done!” The nurse announces with a large smile. Imani pays the woman no mind as she continues to sing the rest of the song by herself and Yoongi smiles, his eyes lighting up as Imani’s little hand wraps around his thumb tightly. Nodding her head, the nurse gathers some paper from behind her and sets them on the foot of the bed. “These have information of the shots that Imani received as well as what to expect and how to treat any symptoms that might come about. We’re waiting on the test results, so you are free to check out and head home for the day.” The nurse places her hand on the door handle and smiles at Yoongi and Imani. “You both did wonderful today. You’re a good father. Good luck with the adoption, Mister Min.” Twisting the handle, the nurse walks out the room and she isn’t surprised to see Seokjin pacing around in the hallway.
“You can head in now, sir. Imani could use a good snuggle.”

i got nothing to say here just wanna share this playlist of Quoll Alone.
youtube
I cannot believe there's absolutely no way to watch free shows and movies anymore, there are too many paid streaming platforms and pirating websites have viruses and ads preventing you from watching it uninterrupted((.)) id rather follow the rules and purchase media moving forward because it is too inconvenient. Seriously, free and no ads or viruses with 1080p streaming is DEAD.

Alone with a Tasman Tiger (Chic Charlie) by Jane Ellyson I am pleased to welcome Jane Ellyson to Escape With Dollycas today! What is so enchanting to people from North America about the Australian Bush? by Jane Ellyson A significant chunk of Alone with a Tasman Tiger is set in the Western Tasmanian wilderness during a survival competition. The Australian bush holds a certain allure for many North Americans because it offers a wild, untamed landscape that's unlike anything found on the North American continent. There are several things that make it captivating including the exotic wildlife, its remoteness, indigenous cultural heritage, and the potential for danger. The Australian bush is home to unique creatures like kangaroos, koalas, quolls, wombats, and the elusive platypus—animals most North Americans only encounter in zoos. This diverse, sometimes quirky wildlife seems both familiar yet very foreign, offering a mix of fascination and wonder. The vegetation is distinct as well. Eucalyptus forests, ancient cycads, and colourful wildflowers create a plant life panorama unlike the forests of North America. The sheer remoteness of the bush, along with its vast open spaces and dramatic landscapes, brings a sense of mystery and adventure. Many places in the Australian bushland are sparsely populated, rugged, and somewhat dangerous, which appeals to the American sense of frontier spirit and the quest for untouched wilderness. Aboriginal cultures have a deep connection to the land, and their art, legends, and spiritual practices often evoke curiosity and respect. This rich cultural heritage, tied intimately with the bush, adds layers of meaning and history to the landscape. For many, exploring the bush feels like connecting with one of the oldest living cultures in the world, learning about Dreamtime stories and sacred places embedded in the landscape. And finally, there is adventure and potential danger. Australian bushland has a reputation for being a challenging, even dangerous environment, filled with venomous snakes, spiders, and other unpredictable wildlife. This adds a thrill for many North Americans who seek adventure. Whether it’s the idea of surviving in the outback, going bushwalking, or learning bushcraft skills, there's a rugged appeal to the Australian landscape. Iconic images from movies, television shows, and literature about the bush and outback often paint it as a vast, golden, sun-baked expanse with dramatic skies and rugged terrain. Films like Crocodile Dundee and Mad Max (albeit set in more barren parts of the outback) have romanticized it as a place of adventure and resilience. Who knows if Alone with a Tasman Tiger: A high stakes race, a missing friend and a search for the impossible will make it to the big screen. The author is ever hopeful and would love to know who you would recommend to play Sebastian Warn and Galina, ‘Betty’ Ivanof. Thank you Jane for visiting today with such a wonderful post. ______ Keep reading for more information about Jane, and Alone with a Tasman Tiger, including my thoughts about the book. About Alone with a Tasman Tiger Alone with a Tasman Tiger (Chic Charlie) Australian Cozy Mystery 2nd in Series Settings – Brisbane, Sydney, Tasmania and London Publisher : Stanley Press (September 23, 2024) Paperback : 398 pages ISBN-10 : 0648660788 ISBN-13 : 978-0648660781 Digital ASIN : B0D6Z31ND7 (314 pages) A high stakes race. A missing friend and a search for the impossible. In the Tasmanian wilderness six contestants battle it out to win $250,000. Only five finish. In Bass Strait the Blue Gazelle yacht tackles fierce winds, huge waves and a phantom vessel, in its race to win the Tattersall Cup. In London a fashion designer learns about a Belarussian scientist, possibly involved with a deadly technology. In Hobart a search party is launched for a missing sailor. At the centre of investigations are two feisty sleuths, Galina Ivanov and Charlotte Harmon, who are looking for clues which could save their partners and stop the spread of a devastating weapon. Can they find them before all hope is lost? Dollycas's Thoughts A contest in the Tasmanian wilderness pits contestants against the elements each on their own. A yacht race has its contestants battling each other and the elements too. A fashion designer finds herself in the middle of an investigation that could have deadly consequences. Hang on tight . . . _____ I have not read the first book in this series where a few of the characters were introduced but that did not hinder my understanding or enjoyment of this story. The author provides a list of the main characters at the beginning of the mystery. Sebastian Ward (Seb) had some time to kill before participating in a yacht race so he signed up to be a contestant on a reality show, held in the Western Tasmanian wilderness. The object is to survive the longest before giving up or being taken out of the game for medical reasons. The show is called Alone. It started with 20 contenders but was quickly cut to 6 contestants who were each delivered to their own plot of land where they must wear a tracker, film for at least 5 hours a day, not kill any bandicoots, Tasmanian devils, platypuses or eastern quolls, and try not to kill any snakes even if they are poisonous. They also can't travel away from their plot of land or try to communicate with other contestants. They could only have clothes, a first aid kit, and 10 items selected from the things the show has provided like a blanket and cooking pot. The first half of the book follows the contestants day-by-day in their quest. Part 2 takes readers along on a yacht race adventure where dangerous things happen. Part 3 takes readers to London where clues come together to explain what happened earlier and also takes us back to the wilderness. Some days overlap and I didn't catch that at first but quickly caught on. Ms. Ellyson has written a very compelling fast-paced story. I liked that it was told continually without jumping back and forth between times and places. I completely immersed myself in the day-to-day adventure in the wilderness. The pages just flew as I was not only entertained but learned things about animals, fishing, setting traps, making camp with accommodations to sleep, and storing food. Each contestant had different strengths and weaknesses. That could have been a book on its own. Then readers are on the yacht observing everything it and the sailors encounter to reach the end, hopefully, to win a prize. The pages were still flying. Then Part 3 brings everything together. People work together to find a missing person and find answers. Again the pages flew. Because of the length of this book, I allotted 3 days for it. but I stayed up late and read the whole thing in one night. Yes, I had a book hangover the next morning but I couldn't put it down. It would make a great movie. Alone with a Tasman Tiger was a very entertaining read with interesting characters in unique settings that grabbed me from page 1. This being the first book I have read by this author I am looking forward to more of her work, maybe the next book in her Chic Charlie Series. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC. Inbox clear!
As usual, please resend anything you think got eaten, our next run will be on Sunday.
There's three things I want to mention!
Firstly, as you might've noticed, we're on Bluesky and are now accepting Bluesky as a form of contact! Say hi!
Second, if you have a muse still living in the tents, please check the #announcements channel! The tent situation is getting a bit out of hand and it'd be incredibly helpful for us if people considered moving their muses--muses can move even at rank 0 without paying any money, can choose to have roommates or live alone at their preference, and there's now a (work-in-progress) system to assign random roommates for those who want their characters to deal with that kind of chaos. Remember, your muse can always move again later if a spot opens up in a sector they really want!
And lastly, activity check starts at midnight this Sunday! Remember that activity made during the activity check itself will not count, so if you think you're a little under, send a couple of messages in chat over the next couple days!
That's all, have a great weekend!
- Assistant Quoll

Yuji heard Taz say this but he nods, moving away from the door quickly while hearing the banging but cries of pain from Kang. Seems even the glitch was hurting them but he didn't like to hear that. The cries of pain and sorrow. As he was moving along, he stops to hear a feminine voice.
"Hello? Is anyone out there?" A feminine voice. But it isn't their friends. It's someone else. "This is Mothra. Can someone talk to me? Please?"
Mothra?! This is the animatronic that gave Nobara and the two watches. "Please! If you can hear me, you need to leave or find some way to get out of there."
Taz wonders if Mothra is okay but then she hears from Yuria that Mothra isn't affected by the glitch. "Hello? Mothra?"
"H..Huh? W..wait......can you hear me? Is someone there!?" Mothra was hoping she heard right but Yuji looks to also help.
"Yeah! It's Taz and her brother! Can you hear us!" he said but Mothra sighed.
"Oh thank god. Some still are alive here....listen, I want to help get you out of this area. It's not safe right now. The glitch or whatever is happening is effecting my friends. It's not safe to be in that location..you have to move to a safer location as soon as possible."
"We know. Do you know a way out of this area?" Yuji asked.
"..I can guide you but please be sure you hear me. Even if your on the move, I get the feeling the mini's will be hunting you down. Just please follow my guides as I say because they might trap you and take you back to one of my friends..." she said. That's when she heard banging from the door as a bigger dent is made. This made the small Quoll scared while the tiger snarling at the dangerous threat. Yuji sweatdrops but he didn't put his baby sister down.
"Please move alone. That door won't hold Kang back for long.....You need to quickly head down and leave this area. When you do turn right.."
Yuji kept following the Quoll but he ducks seeing another table being thrown. He winces seeing it break on contact. Pieces flying everywhere. But he was still worried. Kang was trying to fight the curse user's control. Even feeling bad for Ghidra.
He knew the sooner they find this curse user, the faster they can stop this! As he gets to the door, he heard a loud slam to see Kang's head against the wall. He sees some cracks before it shuts down?
"......"
That was scary but Yuji kept holding Taz when seeing the little quoll hoping. It found the exit! He quickly goes to it before...

"!?!" Yuji quickly runs to the EXIT door and when he did, he heard Kang rushing over reaching for the two. Yuji even saw a baby tiger show up to quickly pick up the Quoll as the groups rush through the door and Yuji slamming it with his foot. He then heard a loud crash noise against the door that was dented along with a pained glitching Howl.

Are there any relatives of the Thylacine still alive and if so could we use the power of
Friendship
I mean science
to bring them back to life
with the loss of the thylacine, the quoll and tasmanian devil are its closest remaining relatives!
they'll have to carry on their legacy alone, but I think they're up to it.

Okay…so I have this idea for a BTS!Hybrid story that won’t leave me alone. With the guys being in Vegas and living their best lives I thought about them interacting with regular people who have no idea who they are.
It starts with them all waiting in line to get ice cream. There is a little girl in front of them who has black ears on top of her head and a long spotted tail. Jimin catches her staring at them which makes him smile at her and she is so happy. The little hybrid plays peek-a-boo with Jimin and Taehyung joins in. The babysitter is totally oblivious to it all as she talks on her phone, but when she hears the girl giggling, she checks to see what is going on and quickly stops the little girl.
They see the same little hybrid again when they are watching the water fountain show, but she is no longer with the babysitter and she looks upset. The guy she is with looks shady and Taehyung convinces the others that something is wrong. Events happen and they save the little girl from being kidnapped.
Taehyung, Jimin and Seokjin stay with the little girl the whole time while the police are getting involved and they find out that the little girl’s father sold her in Vegas. The ‘babysitter’ was just around to make sure the sale went smoothly. (There’s more to it, but I don’t wanna spoil it all)
From there it would be a series of events of Taehyung trying to get custody of the girl and becoming her legal guardian.
Can you imagine them all going back to South Korea with her? Everyone teaching her Korean. Namjoon taking her for bike rides and making sure her ears aren’t squished by her helmet. Seokjin baking cookies and cracking hella dad jokes. Jimin dancing with her and let her burrow into his hoodie pockets. Hobi spoiling her with gifts and braiding her hair. Jungkook being the best uncle always giving her sweets and letting her chill on his shoulders. Yoongi having his favorite cuddle partner and letting her take naps in his studio. Taehyung just being head over heels in love with her, dressing her up in cute little matching outfits and showing her the word.
I’m thinking she would be a rare hybrid around the age of four or five, a Quoll.

Here's my response as a fellow Australian who likes animals and has met a fair few of these.
Bears: I mean fair. But it's basically a large quoll
Moose: Moose are genuinely terrifying I agree. The deer here are already terrifying Moose are even more so
Oxen: they're just big cows with horns
Alligators: Alligators are dumb. They're like if a freshy had the brain of chicken.
African Animals: this is fair but I have to disagree with you putting lions on this list and then not saying Tigers aren't terrifying. Tigers can and will bite you
Brazilian spiders and scorpions: I agree with the scorpions. The spiders in Oz also aren't particularly the smartest so I have to also agree. But I have to counter point with our tiny scorpions that hurt to be stung by and our funnel webs that have snake like venom. (I am passionate about my spiders. Could care less about the scorpions but they do hurt.)
Apes: I understand this completely.
Zebras: don't have much of an opinion on them but the fact is neat. Didn't know that.
Rabies: Whilst we don't quite have it we do have a few things that are similar. Don't know what they are off the top of my head but they exist
Parasite: sounds gross, cool, never want to deal with it.
Snapping turtle: did you know that we actually do have a few species of snapping turtle. I think the one you're more picturing is the alligator snapping turtle which I agree with. That thing is terrifying.
I agree that to us our stuff isn't scary because we've grown up with it so I'll make an extra list of Aussie stuff that should scare us more.
Blue ringed octopus. I go to the Beach a few times a year and have come across 2 in the last year.
Our sealife in general: so many deadly things live nearby
Snakes. But to be fair unless its a brown or a tiger snake and you stand still, they'll leave you alone.
The stupid orange spider wasps. So many please leave me alone and stop following me. (Read wasp related trauma)
Kangaroos. Greys and reds scare me deeply despite how much I want to hug one.
Cassowaries: they have wary in the name. They will follow people.
Don't forget drop bears
Deer: They do not back down
Cockatoos: now I know what you're thinking. "Cockies what ever are you talking about" Those birds have beaks with bolt cutter strength and will try to bite fingers every chance they get
Tasmanian devils: they have the strongest bite strength of mammals proportional to size
Dingos: dingos have and will eat your baby
I agree stuff is scary but we also have scary things
As an Australian I love the whole "Australia is a death trap full of vicious deadly animals" cultural myth. Every place has some deadly animals in it who will fuck you over if you don't understand them; we're not more dangerous than anywhere else. BUT we get to look badarse by existing when people pretend we are. No downsides.

Aussie Wildlife FAQ
So here's questions I'm frequently asked as both a wildlife rescuer and carer and keeper at a wildlife sanctuary. Heads up, this is a long post, I've made the questions stick out so you can easily skip through. I've tried to make it as easy to read as possible, and to find what you're after, whilst also providing lots of info.
Poison Vs Venom, what's the difference?
Well, mostly, poison just never stops killing. Like if you poison an insect, then a bird or small mammal eats that insect and they slowly get poisoned by all the poisoned insects they eat, then something eats them, like an owl, and that gets poisoned, then as it rots the poison goes into the environment, etc. Poison never dies. Venom has to be injected, so yes you can be envenomated by a dead animal, if you are stupid. Poison can be inhaled, eaten/drunk or even through touch. So if a cow is poisoned you have to dispose of the body safely, if a cow is bitten by a venomous snake, technically you can still have steak for dinner.
Are all Australian animals out to kill you?
Maybe.
They could want to kill us, I mean as a species we aren't that great. Their ability to kill us however is limited. So are all Aussie animals able to kill you? No. So we have lots of cute small mammals, like antechinus, dunnarts, pygmy possums and the like, that can bite and scratch but are very tiny bois. We even have lots of non-venomous snakes, pythons and blind snakes. Most lizards outside of Goannas can't cause too much damage. Echidna's are completely defensive, have no attack whatsoever. Lots of birds have no interest in you, unless you get near their nest. Freshwater Turtles, Little Penguins and Tawny Frogmouths all main defense is shitting really stinky shit at you. Even our venomous snakes, as long as you seek medical attention you should be fine. Considering we have the top 10 most venomous snakes in the world but average only 1 death a year that's pretty good.
But you still have lots of dangerous animals right?
Yes.
Maybe I should elaborate. Any animal is dangerous, including you, if given the right circumstances. I'm a lovely person but hurt my dog and you better run. Most animals don't want a bar of you. However, if you are a threat to them, or their babies, they will defend themselves. A lot of animals get tagged with the word 'aggressive' which I don't like, aggression is a human emotion that I've never seen in wild animals, or even pets and things. Mostly it's defensive behaviours that people read wrong. For example, the most venomous snake in the world is the Inland Taipan (found in Aust.), however the most dangerous snake in Australia is the Eastern Brown snake, less venomous but also less shy and lives in suburbia. Still, it only ever strikes at people when it feels cornered and needs to get you to back the hell off. And lets be real here, what else can they do? They can't yell and scream, they can't punch or kick. Legit their only option is to bite, and even then mostly it's a closed mouth strike to freak you out into stepping back, and most people bitten by snakes are given a 'dry bite' where no venom is injected, as they want to use it on their food not waste it on us. And 90% of snake bites that happen in Australia are people either trying to catch or kill a snake.
It's fairly simple. Don't threaten animals, don't give them a reason to be dangerous and you are fine. Crocodiles in the water? Don't swim there. Sharks around? Avoid swimming at twilight. Snake? Leave it alone. Nest with baby birds? walk away. You don't randomly show up in some strangers home and expect them not to react, so why do we expect different from animals?
What animals are on the most 'dangerous list' then? Which animals should I really avoid pissing off?
Start with the obvious. Crocodiles, venomous snakes, sharks, some jellyfish, venomous spiders, stone fish, blue ringed octopus, birds of prey (our Wedge Tailed Eagle WILL attack drones, hang-gliders and helicopters if they come into their territory) Then you've got the less obvious. Ants - like meat ants, they will swarm over you then all bite down at once. 1 bite isn't so bad, a whole colony biting you, deadly. Then there's other ants in the Myrmecia family (bull ants and the like) that are just HUGE, and have massive mandables for biting and also can sting you, and are one of the most toxic insects in the world.
Wombats - Can run at 40km/hr, skull so hard it's the only thing a Tassie Devil can't eat, able to bite your calf muscle clean off your leg, oh and they have killer booty. A hard cartilage plate in their lower back that they use to block their burrows, and if threatened can lay down and as the animal tries to get past jam their legs straight and crush the skull of a fox against the roof of their burrow, easily break a dingoes jaw or even destroy your hand.
Kangaroos - yes they box, hahaha wouldn't it be funny to box with a kangaroo. NO. Kangroos box for fun but also to defend themselves and their mob. The Alpha male is the big buff one that looks like he's on steroids. He looks like that for a reason, to defend and protect his mob. DO NOT MESS WITH ANY KANGAROOs, but really don't mess with Big Daddy (for being the alpha he gets all the ladies) Kangaroos are made for this. A punch from a Kangaroo can easily break you ribs. They can lean back on their tail and bring both legs up to kick you, easily tearing you open, which they can do with the claws on their toes, and so basically dissecting you from sternum down. Oh and if they gran you round the neck for a 'Cuddle' DUCK AND RUN. They will hold you in a kind of choke hold and then bring their legs up to kick you and basically snap you in half. Don't even mess with Wallabies man, they may be smaller but can still do damage.
Tassie Devils - are extremely shy and slower than you, like you can actually run away from them. BUT. They have the strongest bite strength compared to size of any animal. The have a PSI of 1200 and males weigh around 8 kg. For perspective, Hyenas have a PSI of 1100 and males weigh around 50kg
Brushtail Possums - They may be cuter than the American Opossums but trust me, they don't want you around. They are solitary so most people have heard them fighting of a night, screeching, shrieking, hissing, growling and making darth vadar noises. Heads up from someone who has had to rescue them from awkward places (fire-places, BBQs, closets) They are stronger than you and they will f*** you up. Even without them meaning to I've gotten injuries from my joey Brushies, they get so keen on their milk when you put it in that they climb your arm and their claws are sharper than cats. Also the sheer strength of them. I'm stronger than I look but if they are clinging on to a tree you are gonna need all your strength to get them off. The can also bite your finger clean off. And I've seen injuries from people who feed wild ones and for some reason have been late to put out the food or something and they've climbed their leg or even jumped on them - stitches were required in a few of those cases (human skin is not thick like tree bark)
What's with Magpies and swooping?
Simple, they have nests/babies and are protecting them. Australia Magpies are very smart and can recognise faces. If they think you are a threat they will try and scare you off. Just like if you're walking along with your toddler and there's a weirdo doing something strange you hold the kid tighter and closer to you and move through faster. But these guys can't just move their nests or their babies. The spot is chosen based on food availability and shelter from sun and rain, but also not being too cold. It's their spot. I've never been swooped by Magpies, other birds yes, but not Magpies. My local birds know me as the lady that cleans and fills the bird bath. Legit the Magpies sing a specific song when it needs filling to call me out to do it. So don't be a threat. If they are swooping in that area, try to avoid it or go through quickly. We used to have Plovers at my school, in the bush at the end of the oval. Never a problem. One day some kids go into the bush and stomp on their nest and eggs. After that they would swoop anyone who came close to there. So the school blocked off that end of the oval. Fair call. Wasn't the birds fault.
Why is everything named so basic?
Oh you mean the snake that's black with a red belly being balled a Red Belly Black Snake, and the tree with all the doodles on it being called a Scribbly Gum? 80% of plants and animals found in Australia are found NO WHERE ELSE. So the early Europeans had a lot of things to name and when they tried naming it themselves they would get it wrong. 2 good examples are: The Death Adder (only considered highly venomous, not deadly, and not an Adder). Also you're only likely to get bitten if you stand on it or try to pick it up. The Australian Magpie, they saw a black and white bird so it must be a magpie. Nope. Actually not in the corvidae family but in the butcherbird family - Artamidae. So their solution was to either take the Aboriginal word, for example, Quoll, Kookaburra, Koala, Quokka, Taipan. Or name it after what it looks like/sounds like/ is found Boobook Owl - makes a sound like booooo-book Squirrel Glider Eastern Water Dragon Grey Headed Flying Fox Flaky Bark Tea Tree Old man Banksia This can cause confusion though as not every brown coloured snake is a brown snake, and not all Eastern brown snakes are brown. Squirrel Gliders aren't related to squirrels. Flying foxes are bats not actual foxes that fly.
What do I do if I find injured wildlife?
Well, depends on the wildlife and where it is. If it's in a dangerous position, like the middle of a highway, don't try anything. First thing, call a wildlife rescue group, there are plenty around and they have trained people who know what to do. A quick google search should show you all you need to know, also the IFAW's Wildlife Rescue App will identify the closest group to you.
If it's a snake, adult wombat or kangaroo, or any other animal that can cause you serious injury, leave it be. The wildlife rescuers you call can give you basic info on how to help but mostly calling them is the main thing.
If it's something smaller, like a young animal or glider or baby bird and you are able to put it into a cardboard box that will be perfect. The 3 main things injured/ill wildlife need are warmth, dark and quiet. You don't need to worry about food or water. The rescuers will organise that. If you give food or water to an animal in shock you can cause more damage.
THE BEST THING IS TO DO NOTHING. I know this sounds stupid. But so many problems can occur from people who don't know what they are doing helping out. You know what they say about good intentions. For example, picking up a Koala like you would pick up a human child (under the armpits, around the chest) you could actually break their ribs. Also so many Koalas end up needing vet care during heat waves because people pour water into their mouths - they can get pneumonia as the water goes in too fast, it is not a natural way for them to drink. You can also get yourself injured or make the animals injuries worse. I have seen Kangaroos with broken legs get up and try to hop away from people. I have seen severe scratches on other people because they tried to pick up an animal.
What diseases can wildlife give me?
Well. I only know about Australian wildlife, and it's very different to other parts of the world. If you get a bad bite or scratch from wildlife you should see your doctor ASAP, get the wound cleaned properly and make sure your tetanus is up to date (same as if a pet gives you a bad bite or scratch).
There aren't that many Zoonosis that are around in Australia that are easy to catch. Mostly you have to be dealing directly with sick wildlife to get them.
The main thing is Australian Bat Lyssavirus. ABL for short. Now our bats can carry it. About 1 in 1000 bats may have it and you HAVE to be bitten or scratched for it to be transmitted to you. If you are bitten or scratched by a bat your chance is 0.1% of getting ABL but it is related to Rabies, so head straight to hospital for treatment. If you don't touch a bat you won't get bitten or scratched and so your chance of getting it is 0. Hendra is the other virus our bats carry, however it has to go through a horse before it mutates enough for humans to get it.
Basically it's only when you get involved with wildlife that your risk of getting a disease from them is higher than VERY unlikely. If you happen to help some wildlife, and you maybe wrap them in a towel or jumper, even if they urinate on it. You can just chuck it in the wash (I usually add a little extra disinfectant) and it will be fine. Treat it the same as if a pet had used it or urinated on it.
What's some Good Wildlife Apps to have?
Well, there's so many out there now hey? Here's some that I've found handy or know people that use. WomSAT EchidnaCSI PlatypusSPOT are all for recording sightings of these animals (wombats/echidnas/platypus) this helps researches track where they are and how they are going which means we can help them more as well. OzAtlas - record a sighting of anything Australian, animal, plant, fungus, insect. FrogID - need to identify a frog? This is the app for you. Use photos or sound recordings, Field Guide to *insert state/territory* Fauna - Have a field guide on you wherever you are without having to carry a book. Seek by inaturalist - Helps you identify any animals, plants, insect, fungus. IFAW Wildlife Rescue - wildlife rescue app (currently for NSW only but soon expanding) will give you advice on what to do and put you into contact with the local wildlife rescue groups.
Besides Cats and Foxes, what other invasive species have you got that cause problems?
First up, any invasive species causes a problem. In Tasmania they have issues with Sugar Gliders, because they are not naturally found there and use up tree hollows that other animals need. Invasive species cause competition for food, water and shelter. They can also bring in diseases that didn't exist in Australia before and that our natives have no defence against (like cats and Toxoplasmosis) Here's a quick list of invasive animal species in Australia. Cats, dogs, foxes, pigs, water buffalo, ferrets rabbits, horses/brumbies, goats, camels, Cane Toad, European Honey Bee, Common Myna bird, deer, donkey, common starling, common pigeon, black rat, brown rat.
There's more, there's reptiles, and weeds and fish but those guys ^ are the main ones that cause problems.
I am an animal lover but unless we get rid of these animals you loose more in the long run. I'm 100% against use of poisons, I prefer having people hunt them to be honest. If you know what you are doing and have the right equipment you can give them a quick, painless death. To give you an idea how bad invasives are:
The introduction of the rabbit is the main cause the Lesser Bilby became extinct.
The introduction of cats and toxoplasmosis is believed to be the main reason Eastern Quolls became extinct on mainland Australia
Rats led directly to the extinction of 5 of Lord Howe Island's bird species
30% of our land snakes and Goannas are at risk as Cane Toads are rapidly spreading and eat their eggs.
The Common Myna Bird is the 2nd greatest threat to Australian native birds (habitat loss being the 1st)
The fox population has been estimated at 72 million and consume around 190 million birds a year
There's an estimated 23 million wild pigs/boars and an estimated 2.6 million goats - all eating whatever they come across.
How can I help Australian Wildlife?
There's the stuff we already know, like reduce/reuse/recycle and don't litter. But there's other things you may not know about.
Turn off lights at night - any lights that you don't need, don't have them on, especially if they are outside. Lots of animals require insects in their diets, particularly moths, which can be distracted by lights. Zoos Victoria have launched educational stuff for this https://youtu.be/ZAcL4FKPtHw
Learn about them - It's not hard, there's multiple ways you can do it. There's books, tv shows, pod casts, you can follow sanctuaries and other people who work with wildlife on social media. Planting flora that's native to your area is great as different plants can attract different animals and it's much lower maintenance, being made for that environment. You can even find cool life-hacks like Lemon Scented Tea-Tree doesn't just smell amazing and feed lots of wildlife, it keeps the mozzies away! There's different kinds of nesting boxes out there specific to different species that you can put up to help 'foster' that species. You can even become friends with your local Magpies! Mine know me as the lady who cleans and fills the bird bath and all I had to do was whistle to them when I was done and now they are really chill around me and I get to watch their antics. Debunk Myths! - In learning about wildlife you can debunk lots of myths like: a mother bird won't take it's chick back if you've touched it (fake news!) or that snakes dislocate their jaw to swallow their prey (that would be soooo painful!)
Put out water - have a bird bath and keep it clean and full. Or if you don't have one or want to get one just put water out on hot days. Summer's getting hotter and hotter and our animals really suffer. So put out a nice pot or container of water. Don't forget to put a rock or a stick in it if it's a slippery surface (like plastic or metal) so that little animals and bugs don't fall in and drown, and keep it out of the sun if it's likely to heat up.
Check roadkill - it's not pleasant but needs to be done. Don't do it if it's a motorway or somewhere dangerous, but if you can PLEASE do. Roadkill sometimes looks dead but isn't and you don't want them laying there suffering. They may have pouch young if they are a marsupial or young nearby that will need care without their parent. And where possible get it off the road. Species like Tasmanian Devils, Goannas and Wedge Tailed Eagles feed on roadkill and can then end up as roadkill themselves. Even if you have to drag it, it's dead and not gonna feel any more pain. 100% of people I have attended a rescue for who have called because they stopped and found a joey or young in a pouch or hiding nearby have not regretted their decision at all. Even if they were late for work, they saved a life and it was worth it.
Avoid using poisons - insecticides, pesticides, snail bait and straight up rat poison. Like mentioned in POISON VS VENOM, it just keeps killing. There are so many other options out there and they aren't hard to find. There's stuff on the internet but also at Bunnings I've found more environmentally sound options that use Tea Tree oils and Eucalyptus instead and work just as well.
Don't feed them! - Most Aussie animals are gluten and lactose intolerant. BREAD IS REALLY BAD! and if not eaten it gets mouldy and causes disease. Putting out bird seed is the number 1 problem when we talk 'feeding wildlife'. WHY?
The 'wild birdseed' that you buy in shops isn't actually for wild birds. JUST LOOK AT IT, you don't see those seeds growing out in the wild. The main seed wild birds eat are Bottle-brush, She-oaks, Banksias, Wattle and Eucalypts. None of those are found in these bags of seed.
Even for seed eaters that seed you buy is too fatty and unbalanced
For those that don't usually eat seed, like Lorikeets, eating the seed destroys the specialised bristles on their tongues that they need to eat their natural food - nectar and pollen.
If you don't keep it clean you will spread diseases, especially psittacosis (beak and feather) for which there is no cure just a slow, drawn out death. You can also catch it and end up in hospital.
You cause an imbalance. Animals breed based on food availability, if you make food available they will breed but there might not be enough space or trees available and you create more competition and also they end up relying on you and if you go on holiday or anything they can die without that food.
You can cause health issues in other animals. Possums love bird seed but it makes them fat, making it harder for them to escape predators.
You will be feeding non-natives. For example, the Common Myna bird cannot survive on wild plants, but if there is a food source around they can. Got rid of Common Mynas in my neighbourhood by convincing my neighbours to stop putting out bird seed.
RATS LOVE BIRD SEED. Specially feral rats. Mice also love bird seed.
You make a predator hot-spot. It won't take long for predators to realised animals they prey on visit your feeding station and they will come. The most common predator I find around bird seed? Snakes. Snakes love rats and mice, rats and mice love bird seed. You do the maths.
If you want to feed them just do some research and plant trees that are food for them.
How many species are endangered?
Sadly, it's almost quicker to list what's NOT endangered in Australia.
That's hard to say as there is different ways they can be endangered. In one area they may be common, but in another they could be disappearing. You can have Endangered lists at different levels; local, state, national and international.
But the most used list is the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global extinction risk status of animal, fungus and plant species. AKA the IUNC Red List
Here's a bit of a breakdown: EXTINCT 26 mammals 7 birds 4 amphibians CRITICALLY ENDANGERED 7 mammals 8 birds 15 amphibians 13 reptiles ENDANGERED 18 mammals 29 birds 18 amphibians 21 Reptiles VULNERABLE 51 mammals 40 birds 23 amphibians 35 reptiles NEAR THREATENED 43 mammals 37 birds 9 amphibians 21 reptiles
Then there's the "data deficient" category where they really just don't have the info. 10 mammals 11 amphibians 42 reptiles
I will continue to update this post as I think of other things. Feel free to send me any questions you have

I remember you once talked about dead rats clogging your sink 😳😳😳
thats only when Quoll, my Real Life Not Fake Anime Husband, gets mad at me and goes on a genocidal pest control spree. even then though he knows to leave Jack the Pet Rat alone. rest assured I do not allow my Incredibly Real Manga Man to hurt my pet.

hi!! idk if you're still doing these but i thought they were super interesting and i was hoping you'd be able to help me with my daemon analysis? i'm an INTP, enneagram 5w6, Virgo sun and Aquarius moon, and a Slytherin. i'm introverted and not approachable, i tend to be awkward around people tho i do care deeply about my friends. i can be outspoken when i notice something i consider injustice tho. i consider myself logical. i got a domestic cat on ur quiz but the exact type kept changing. thanks
hey! i just wanted to apologize to you and everyone else who has been waiting — this has been a pretty rocky month, but i miss writing these so i’m going to try to ease back into it!
i’ve been working on a write-up on some INTP suggestions; you’re very much the “classic” INTP with a 5w6, really playing into the beautiful thoughtfulness and reservation and logical aspect (like you said) of the INTP, but prone to feelings of incompetence and self-doubt. domestic cat is an interesting thought and i can absolutely see it fitting in a more pullman form or symbolic nature, which makes sense for the quiz. if you’re attached to the cat form i’ll suggest some breeds that come to mind, but also other animal suggestions that might fit better from an analytical perspective.
for domestic cats, i do have a tendency to think of them as more Ni than Ti, which might just be the stereotype of the cat as being particularly insightful, seeing things beneath the surface, visionaries, etc. Ti’s strength is much more in logical and analytics, leaning more into wanting an objective structure and model to explain the world around them. if you’re interested in the domestic cat as a form, i’d highly recommend breeds that are going to be more independent and efficient. honestly maybe look into hybrid breeds or small wild cat species? the african golden cat, scottish wildcat, or leopard cat could be potential options for wild species... i think even hybrid breeds (i was looking close at the sokoke) are just going to be too approachable and friendly for you. if you’re someone who would describe themself as ambitious, driven, opportunistic, and focused, some bigger species might be applicable to you like the serval, though with wild species of cats definitely consider how loose-bonding you are.
i say this a lot with wild cat species especially: humans are social creatures, and it’s unrealistic to think that you or anyone else considering a solitary species wouldn’t have friends. instead think about the role those friends play in your life. are you emotionally dependent on them and do you welcome their emotional dependence on you? do you need your friend group for a sense of security? are you able to make new friends and move between friend groups easily? does naturally drifting apart from friends deeply upset you?
cats aside, my first thought was actually the crested porcupine. a gorgeous animal and seems to check a lot of your boxes: independent and selective, highly dutiful to loved ones, prefer to be left alone but will assert themselves, and straightforward and logical. capable of being adaptable like most porcupine species, but prefers to stick with tried and true methods and only move out of their comfort zone when forced. their unique devotion to their family members would suggest a dedication to your friend group and a sense of empathy and duty reserved for those you truly care about. otherwise very unapproachable, doesn’t like to be disturbed when focused, and while tolerant at first, will not pull punches if someone repeatedly crosses their boundaries.
an alternative that came to me western quoll: they’re independent and reserved, logical and resourceful, and assertive and direct. the only caveat to them is they might be too loose-bonding and detached as well; they’re going to fit the description of someone who doesn’t rely on their friend group for emotional support and needs that sense of independence, alone time, and being able to pursue their own interests without intervention. similarly they’ll have an easier time moving on from friendships and finding new companionship.
i was also looking at members of afroinsectivora for you... elephant shrew and tenrecs specifically. this clade strikes a really nice balance between introverted but socially dutiful, cautious but assertive, and efficient but modest. - elephant shrews are going to be rather independent and unapproachable but very devoted to their select group; they're naturally anxious and cautious individuals, who struggle with rest and relaxation and like to stay busy. paranoid and wary streak, rather adaptable, observant, and curious. very devoted to their work and are likely perfectionists. can be protective and will be extremely vocal and assertive when their personal boundaries are crossed. - tenrecs are very diverse and if you're interested i can go into specific species, but generally speaking this is an independent animal who doesn't do well with sudden change or socialization. the spines on their back (they curl up into a ball when threatened) makes me think it might suit your unapproachable nature. very assertive when someone repeatedly bothers them. otherwise fairly adaptable, inquisitive, and perfectionistic, though again the sort who would prefer to stick to routines. selectively dedicated to their loved ones. more patient and less of that "busy body" energy that the elephant shrew will have.
finally maybe look into butorides (small herons)? they’re all going to be reserved, socially tolerant, dedicated, private, opportunistic, and assertive... definitely think someone who's highly independent and focused, willing to work with others, and has high standards when it comes to their work and those they consider deep friends. this is definitely a group that only fits if you see yourself as someone who's ambitious and can be confident, which may go against what you mean by awkward. but overall they fit the INTP well as they're great problem solvers and love thinking through issues. the green heron in particular is an exceptionally intelligent and resourceful animal, though the striated heron and lava heron are both very applicable.

This is probably a weirdly specific question, but I need it for OC purposes -
Does anyone know where I could find reliable size references of Australian wildlife? Preferably in the form of a chart comparing the species to a regular 5 ft. tall human. I could REALLY use the help.
My main focus is currently on things like quolls, possums/gliders, reptiles (namely crocs/goannas/snakes), and avians, but truth be told I could use just about any animal reference considering I don’t even know exactly how many species will wind up being utilized in the story XD
Again, I know this is weirdly specific, but unfortunately I’m having a hard time finding decent references. Any time I try to find out the size of a certain animal, all I get is “it’s so-and-so inches high and weighs such-and-such pounds” and there’s usually NEVER a side-by-side human comparison to give a better idea of how big or small it is. Sorry to sound stupid, but measurements aren’t helpful to me unless there’s an image to go with it. Numbers alone don’t help me draw, it takes actually seeing the size difference for me to scale the animal properly x.x” Not sure if any other artists have this problem, but it’s frustrating to say the least and somewhat embarrassing to admit.
So far the only Australian species I’ve managed to get proper size reference of are Thylacines and Tasmanian Devils, that’s about it.
Anyways, if anyone happens to know of any images or sites that may be useful, please don’t hesitate to comment in the notes or even message me privately if you prefer ^^ Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i downloaded Quoll Writer at the recommendation of a friend and im REALLY liking it so far, it’s super handy for sectioning things and ideas. big recommend
anyway that means im organizing some Lore(tm) from my original setting, so here’s that copy-pasted from quoll
Multisidera Station υ (Upsilon)
One of the newer, but nowhere near the newest, stations in the Multisidera Torchbearer® line of Sun-Drive class artificial satellites. Staffed with over 4,000 Torches (a specialized class of stellar engineers and workers), and a massive 35,000 person on-station permanent civilian staff. Upsilon orbits a black dwarf star, and is charged with harvesting the remains of its degenerated matter for use in the station's sun drive.
Torchbearer
Torchbearers, often called Torches themselves and by some "lighters" (though never on paper), are the people who live and work on the Multisidera station. Not all of the station's residents are Torchbearers (for simplicity's sake from hereon out refered to as "Torches") in fact the vast majority are civilian workers, educators, even station politicians.
Torches are tasked with the maintenance, upkeep, and depending on the circumstance and command from above revival or harvesting of stars. Specially trained for 9 stellar cycles (standardized from the home government; irrelevant to cycles of current station) Torches are the direct and literal engineers of the stars. Using an aptly, doubly named "Torch," a specialized, staff-sized castiron stylus to move, defuse and collect stellar particulate, they ensure active, life-supporting stars are in top function. Their second-most common function is in safely harvesting the remains of Red Giants before they can go supernova in their own life-supporting systems. Giants are typically left alone by Torchbearer colonies unless they pose a threat to a habited planet or satellite.
Torch
The name for both the people who work the Multisidera station, and the specialized spear-like tool they use when handling stellar particulate matter. Resembling an actual cast iron torch, it also lights up and holds a faint glow in its receptacle when in use.
Often casually, affectionately refered to as "lighters," "lights," or "sticks".
