One of my favorite carols, I always sing the Sussex Carol as boisterously as I can on Christmas Night, and I always tear up at some point, a fantastic thing for a heathen, eh? And I find this beautiful version by The Canadian Brass even more touching!
Happy Christmas Eve, friends; I hope you all have a lovely time with the people who are dear to you!

Grief-tinted memories: Reflections on Mother Muse Quintet by Naveen Kishore
The loss of a beloved parent inspires a tumult of emotion and weaves complex webs of images that fragment and coalesce over time. It is, I have learned, a living grief, something that ties us to our own past in ways that shift and change in a manner that cannot be mapped or predicted. Today, as I gather my thoughts about the latest poetry collection by my friend Naveen Kishore, my own mother has…

Art Tatum and Herbie Hancock
Tumblr media
Art Tatum was an American jazz pianist, who is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest jazz pianist of all time. Tatum is seen as one of the biggest influence for most, if not all, of modern jazz playing, due to his highly technical playing style and overall musical proficiency. Jazz critic Scott Yanow described Tatum as having,” …quick reflexes and boundless imagination [which] kept his improvisation filled with fresh (and sometimes futuristic) ideas that put him way ahead of his contemporaries.” It was amazing to learn that Tatum was nearly completely blind, but was still able to play with more mastery and accuracy than most of his fully sighted competitors. You can hear Tatum’s mastery on the piano through songs like Tiger Rag and Tea For Two. Although Tatum was nearly completely blind, he was born with perfect pitch, which often allowed him to hear a certain song and improvise it immediately without any additional background on the music. In fact, this is how Tatum learned to play the piano so excellently. It is often said that Tatum would just improvise on songs from his favorite Jazz artist Earl Hines, and create a sound of his own. Tatum’s unique style was developed mostly from Harlem stride and classical piano, which introduced a strong swing vibe to the jazz piano. Tatum’s style was widely known to have strong cadenzas that swept across the entire keyboard, and his innovative large chord voicings, which created harmonic sounds way ahead of Tatum’s time. Tatum passed away due to kidney complications in 1956, but was posthumously inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1964. His legacy still lives on as a small number of musicians, both in the jazz genre and in other music styles, still attempt to emulate his sounds.
Tumblr media
One of the modern contemporaries of Tatum is Herbie Hancock, who is also an American Jazz pianist to revolutionize the genre of music. Working with the Miles Davis Qunitet, Hancock helped redefine the role of jazz rhythm and section as one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound. Hancock was also one of the first jazz pianists to embrace the sounds of a synthesizer and bring a little funk in to the jazz sound. Apart from bringing the funk to jazz, Hancock, in Tatum’s style, covered many songs creating “cross-over” sounds that appealed to audiences both in jazz and pop. Much like Tatum, Hancock did not have anyone that taught him jazz specifically, and developed his own sound though his ear and sense of harmony. It was this skill set that made Miles Davis personally invite Hancock to join his Quintet, where Hancock became part of one the finest jazz ensembles in history. You can hear Hancock’s best compositions in Cantaloupe Island and Watermelon Man.

The Underworld, Terrangima, 1995, SNES, developed by Quintet, published by Enix in Japan (Nintendo in PAL regions, no North American release), composed by Miyoko Takaoka and Masanori Hikichi
It’s a shame we never got this title (officially) stateside -- it brings a lot to the table, like this quiet, mysterious theme I feel fits an “underworld” perfectly.
