Brisbane: Places to Visit and Things to Do
Brisbane is Australia’s third-largest city after Sydney and Melbourne. I moved to Brisbane for my studies at the University of Queensland in early January 2024. I must admit I haven’t travelled as much as I wished. But I have travelled around a bit. The commute is worthwhile, given the use of Go-Card for all services—ferries, trains, and buses—across Queensland. Travelling by ferry is one of the…

Uni of Queensland is planning to close their masters of museum studies.
On 10 May 2024, The University of Queensland wrote to students, industry representatives and alumni advising that it is proposing to phase out the Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from 2025. This is exactly 20 years after the course was established.
If this proposal succeeds there will be no tertiary qualifications offered in this specialised field in Queensland.
Queensland is home to a vibrant network of around 400 public museums and galleries, who operate with around 1,600 paid staff and over 15,000 volunteers.  Museums and galleries are also integral parts of Australia’s arts and cultural ecosystem which is a $111.7bn industry that contributes 6.5% of GDP.
The University of Queensland’s Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies programs are incredibly important in training the next generation of gallery, museum, archives and library (GLAM) professionals and filling skills shortages in our sector. Should the University’s proposal succeed, it will have a profound impact on Queensland’s arts and cultural heritage ecology, and future workforce.

Daphne Mayo
youtube
Daphne Mayo was born in 1895 in Sydney, New South Wales. Mayo was a sculptor who became known for public commissions, including the Queensland Women's War Memorial and the Brisbane City Hall tympanum. She co-founded the Queensland Art Fund in 1929 and Queensland's first art reference library in 1936. In 1938, Mayo received a medal from the Queensland Society of Artists. During World War II, she shifted her focus to portrait sculpting. In 1960, Mayo became the first woman trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery. From 1961 to 1965, she worked on her last major commission, a statue of Sir William Glasgow. Her work can be found in public collections throughout Australia.
Daphne Mayo died in 1982 at the age of 86.

San Myshuno MoMA

San Myshuno Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is the place to be if you're looking to increase your painting skills and looking for inspiration, or if you just want to take in some beautiful works of art for a few hours.
I'm very hesitant to do Community Lots because they still are a tad bit overwhelming to me, but I sat down on Saturday and tackled this bad boy. I did some perusing (Google is great for that), and got some inspiration from the exterior of the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane, Australia. The Hubby and I would love to go to Australia one day (we have a love for their psycho Cattle Dogs, too), so he approved of this build and gave me some ideas of how to incorporate ventilation and gave me the idea for solar panels and skylights on the roof. The Hubby, who thinks The Sims is a little silly (he's more of a console than PC gamer), even said he appreciated "the realism of the rounded duct work" from the Industrial Loft Kit. #ConstructionEngineerWifeLife
Anywhoser, I think this turned out really really well. When I grabbed Daisy Lockhart to play test everything out, I was THRILLED that more than three Sims were on the lot actually viewing the paintings and taking turns at the easels in the back. Hopefully, the MoMA will get a lot of visitors in the future!
Tray Files (including Packs Used + CC List) are below the break.
I'm having a lot of trouble deciding which area of this build is my favorite, but I'm going to be silly and say that all of it is my favorite!
San Myshuno MoMA has been uploaded to The Gallery; make sure to check ‘Include Custom Content’ when you search!

Artist: Billy Missi (1970-2012) Sapur Au Kubi (Dark Flock of Bats), 2006 linocut print 12/90 69x100cm Cairns Art Gallery
Artist info:
Place of Birth Mabuiag (Jervis Island), Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia Language Group Kala Lagaw Ya. Totem: Koedal, Kaigas, Dhangal Clan Group Wagedagam, Gumu, Pania
Artist notes:
"During mango, almond and cashew nut season a lot of Sapur (Flying Foxes) come to our village and gardens.
When the sun begins to set in the western sky, the Sapur usually come in flocks from the thick mangroves that fringe the coastline.
The Sapur only come out at dusk to raid the fruit trees so that people cannot see them. Otherwise they would be targeted by hunters and chased away. Despite this they do make a lot of noise as they feed.
The Sapur suck the juice out of the fruit and dispose of the rest making a lot of mess under the trees. They do this all night until morning breaks when they take flight back to their isolated, thick scrubs and mangroves.
Growing up in the islands in the 1970's, these sightings were common during fruit season.
It is our uncles who tell us that whenever flocks of sapur approach the gardens, the fruit is ripe.
This image shows a large number of Sapur flying to the village to feed on the fruit trees. They circle above the trees to choose where they will feed for the evening." - Billy Missi
