Brisbane: Places to Visit and Things to Do
Brisbane is Australia’s third-largest city after Sydney and Melbourne. I moved to Brisbane for my studies at the University of Queensland in early January 2024. I must admit I haven’t travelled as much as I wished. But I have travelled around a bit. The commute is worthwhile, given the use of Go-Card for all services—ferries, trains, and buses—across Queensland. Travelling by ferry is one of the…

SET THREE - ROUND TWO - MATCH TWO
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Exotic Bodies” (2003 - Aisha Khalid) / “Doubting Thomas” (2023 - Ian Stone)
EXOTIC BODIES: I don’t really have much to say about this painting because the title says enough to me. This is by a Pakistani painter and it just reminds me of how my mother and other women in my family talk about gender roles. Both hidden and exoticized. Besides that the technical ability of this artist is wild to me; I believe this is a miniature. (marwamarwa)
DOUBTING THOMAS: I've been raised christian and there's only one thing I want to keep: the art, because wow. And to me this is even better, because it references religious art but makes my heart flutter. It makes me want to cry for all these years I felt out of place, makes me want to laugh also because now I'm in a better place, makes me want to scream for all the pain the trans community goes through. Overall it gets me feeling a lot of things and I welcome it all. (silent-dreamy-one)
("Exotic Bodies" is a gouache painting done on wasli paper by Pakistani artist Aisha Khalid. It is 20 x 33.7cm (7.8 x 13in) and located in the Queensland Art Gallery in Australia.
"Doubting Thomas" is a oil on linen painting by Ian Stone. It is 12 by 16 in (30 by 40cm).)

Uni of Queensland is planning to close their masters of museum studies.
On 10 May 2024, The University of Queensland wrote to students, industry representatives and alumni advising that it is proposing to phase out the Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from 2025. This is exactly 20 years after the course was established.
If this proposal succeeds there will be no tertiary qualifications offered in this specialised field in Queensland.
Queensland is home to a vibrant network of around 400 public museums and galleries, who operate with around 1,600 paid staff and over 15,000 volunteers.  Museums and galleries are also integral parts of Australia’s arts and cultural ecosystem which is a $111.7bn industry that contributes 6.5% of GDP.
The University of Queensland’s Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies programs are incredibly important in training the next generation of gallery, museum, archives and library (GLAM) professionals and filling skills shortages in our sector. Should the University’s proposal succeed, it will have a profound impact on Queensland’s arts and cultural heritage ecology, and future workforce.

Daphne Mayo
youtube
Daphne Mayo was born in 1895 in Sydney, New South Wales. Mayo was a sculptor who became known for public commissions, including the Queensland Women's War Memorial and the Brisbane City Hall tympanum. She co-founded the Queensland Art Fund in 1929 and Queensland's first art reference library in 1936. In 1938, Mayo received a medal from the Queensland Society of Artists. During World War II, she shifted her focus to portrait sculpting. In 1960, Mayo became the first woman trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery. From 1961 to 1965, she worked on her last major commission, a statue of Sir William Glasgow. Her work can be found in public collections throughout Australia.
Daphne Mayo died in 1982 at the age of 86.
