Released on this day (12 November 1986): “Open Your Heart”, the yearning, irresistible and triumphant fourth single from Madonna’s True Blue album. Like so many of her best songs, the lyrics cast Madonna as the determined romantic pursuer or aggressor (“I've had to work much harder than this / For something I want, don't try to resist me” she wails), while the video (directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino) stylishly references Marlene Dietrich singing “Falling in Love Again” as Lola Lola in The Blue Angel (1930), Liza Minnelli singing "Mein Herr" as Sally Bowles in Cabaret (1972) and the erotic Art Deco paintings of Tamara de Lempicka. Now sing along with me: “I see you on the street and you walk on by / You make me wanna hang my head down and cry / If you gave me half a chance you'd see / My desire burning inside of me / But you choose to look the other way …”
