The Sky in Amman is as blue as a sea.
As I took a tour around Jordan, though Castle Petra was the main target,I still had spent some time here on purpose to add up the fun for my trip.Winter here is extremely cold, but summer is sultry and scorchingly hot. Thus,I chose to visit Jordan in the end of Febuary due to the timing of the year was kinda slack for tourism.Every March - June was considered as peak seasons. This time of year,I could get some sweet price in time for hotels here. Though Jordan’s average income is not as high as its neighbor ,Israel(3 folds of Taiwan’s avg.income),Amman was not really cheap as dirt. So,be prepared that quality is not as high as its pricing here.
The bags claim at Queen Alia International Airport.
It will be faster and shorter going to airport from southern tourist site,Mt.Nebo, than you go back to Amman city ,and then from there transferring again to airport by taxi.
The main public transporting vehicle is buses in Amman. There are 3 major bus terminals.I went to northern bus terminal for my hotel was close to it,from where I transferred by a taxi that drove me to my hotel.I saw the bus ticket booth right away after stepping out the arrival hall.It generally takes 45 mins to 1 hour from airport to Amman city(depends on traffic).
Traffic on the way to my hotel.
Main public transportation is buses. However,if you don’t know the bus routes, then it’s all useless to you. Most people’s English was not good either. So you might not get the information you’d need.Shared cabs ran the same routes as buses, which would be the same uselessness, if they don’t stop at your destination. Thus, general taxi was my only hope, but the price must be settled first.
People in Amman were friendly to tourists, they might be curious about other Asians though. However, get alerted when in suburban area.I was surrounded once by local young pranks.Luckily there was a cab happened to pass by me,and I halted it and got on it right away to leave the spot of troubleness.
The restaurant of my hotel was decorated with mosaic tiles, which was full of Middle East’s ambience. The staff was also very nice to me.What made it weird was that its reception hall was at 3rd floor from the front of the building, but it’s at 7th floor if counted from the back of the hotel.Funny,it’s because Amman city was built on old 7 hills.Even the land had been cut into pieces for years due to urban development. It was still an arduous job for peopole to walk around. Thus, you couldn’t go far without taking a cab,and also a physical challenge to tourists.
Streets in City .
Before going,I had no any clue at all about Amman, for which,I particularly spent 2 days in Amman. There were two major sights in Amman, one was Temple of Hercules at the Park of Citadel(at the top of hill),the other was Roman Theatre(downhill). One day would be enough for both sites. From my map,I thought my hotel was quite close to the park, which turned out to be wrong.Amman was built on hills, which making you hike even you just took a casual walk outside. Quickly I stopped a cab that drove me directly to the entrance of the Park of Citadel. Thus, going somewhere?remember to take a taxi.
The Entrance of Citadel Park.
The ruins of Temple of Hercules.
There were taxis lining up outside of the park’s entrance. So,don’t you worry about no any taxi to hail. After the tour at the Temple of Hercules, you could just go down hill to the Roman theatre on foot. If you don’t want taxi service, you must act like real to turn down drivers’ offers,or you’d be harassed to die. From my experience, salesmen or businessmen of shops or vendors were quite sticky here, but people in Amman were all right on the other hand.
City views from hilltop.
The materials of houses are all yellowish, earthy plates,as I had heard, monopolized by big cartels.
The underground cisterns and waterways.
We can see many relics left from the times of Roman and Greece empires everywhere now in west.Temple of Hercules at Citadel Park was not exceptional, like I could still imagine its imposing and grandness. It was also the tallest spot in Amman ,where I was gladly to enjoy the panoramic view very much. The sky was absolutely blue, the color of Mediterranean Sea.My mind was content.
The columns were actually gigantic,I thought It might need 6 or 7 persons hand-in-hand to make a circle of it.

The Roman Theatre in downhill can be seen its kind everywhere in the world ,but its condition was kept well.Municipal activities still were held at this site as well. However, its stony stairs were very high and steep,I was so worried about other people’s safety,as they climbing up and down….

Design Milk Travels to… Amman
The seven main hills of Amman stand sentinel to one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, one buzzing with the telltale signs of modernity at its core accompanied with the haunting hum of antiquity interspersed along its periphery. Tourists arrive in droves for short stays here within the capital of Jordan before heading out with plans for days to be spent floating weightlessly upon the saline buoyancy of the Dead Sea or navigating the achingly beautiful narrow passage into the heart of the ancient Nabataean city of Petra by foot. But in doing so, visitors forgo the opportunity to explore a city beginning to embroider the tapestry of its ancient past with a emerging art and design scene.
WHERE TO STAY
Motivated by hunger, my first morning in Amman was spent huffing and puffing up and down a series of serpentine streets, each interconnected to a see-saw of stairs. Imagine someone throwing a plateful of noodles onto paper and tracing the outlines to map a city, and you’ve got an approximation of Amman’s dizzying streets. I endured the Sisyphean butt-kicker in hopes of finding Salaheddin Bakery (مخبز صلاح الدين), an Abdali neighborhood staple specializing in kaek, a fingertip-scorching loaf of freshly baked sesame seed encrusted bread impregnated with a holy trinity of baked eggs, cheese, and za’atar. Perhaps it was a case of positive reinforcement by way of taste buds after devouring that unforgettably delicious sandwich, but afterward I felt confident and committed to exploring Amman by foot. Obviously a level of fitness is required to walk such demanding geography, but the reward is the ability to scratch the itch of curiosity tickled by Amman’s countless alleys, courtyards, and hidden gardens.
Staying at a hotel central to downtown is advisable for this purpose, allowing easier access to Amman’s historical sites, the souk, galleries, shops, and restaurants. Even so, be ready to jump into one of the 11,000 yellow taxis servicing Amman.
Photos: La Locanda Hotel
La Locanda Boutique Hotel, Jordan’s first themed boutique hotel, is nestled in the precipitous and picturesque neighborhood of Jabel Al Weibdeh, the artistic heart of Amman. The hotel is close to many of the city’s most vibrant galleries, most notably the center for contemporary Arab art, Darat Al Funun. The tree-lined avenues dotted with shops and cafes allow for leisurely walks with the opportunity to frequently stop.
Photos: Wild Jordan Center
Don’t let the name throw you off, the Wild Jordan Center is a hidden gem and our favorite accommodations for longer stays in Amman. Comprised of five “lodges” (really just apartments, complete with kitchenettes), the center offers guests an Instagram-worthy view overlooking Old Amman, with the iconic Citadel clearly visible from every window and balcony. The lodges are named after nature reserves protected by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. With the evocation of a lodge, one might expect rustic decor, but each room is actually decorated in contemporary furnishings. The adjoining restaurant serves visitors and guests alike local seasonal fare served with a health conscious bent; nearly every table presents a densely populated and picturesque view of city life below. I also remember the adjoining gift shop as particularly well stocked with small wares, clothing, handmade items, and foodstuffs.
Photo: W Amman
Those seeking the refuge of a recognizably global style of accommodations may find the contemporary 280 guest rooms and 44 suites of the W Amman in the Abdali neighborhood to their liking. If you’ve stayed at a W Hotel before, the financial district hotel won’t throw any surprises, sharing the identifiably sleek W-style décor that has made the brand a dependable beacon for vacationers and business travelers alike.

The Jordanian National Gallery of Fine Arts’ collection of contemporary art isn’t comprehensive, but it offers an excellent starting off point with a curated selection showcasing the diversity of styles, techniques, and subject matter specific to Jordan and the surrounding regions. The museum is actually comprised of two buildings separated by a sculpture garden in between, with temporary exhibitions housed in the smaller north side Building 1, with the majority of its permanent collection housed across inside Building 2. The neighborhood and museum are both surprisingly quiet, delivering unhurried contemplation and appreciation of the artwork on display.

The Darat al Funun could be considered the Jordanian equivalent of The Getty in Los Angeles – a hillside cultural center dedicated to the intersection of contemporary and ancient art, academia, and cultural outreach overlooking its host city. But how many museums can claim its own excavated ruins of a 6th-century Byzantine church sitting on its grounds? Just be ready to climb an endless ascension of stairs while exploring Darat al Funun’s intimate gardens, library, temporary exhibitions, and hopefully a stop at the hillside cafe. Each spot rewards curious minds with strengthened calves.

Tiraz sits on the outskirts of a residential section of Amman, and inside its unassuming walls resides the magnificent Widad Kamel Kawar dress collection, the most complete assemblage of both Palestinian and Jordanian dress, alongside the largest collection of Syrian dresses outside of the country. A deeper appreciation of the region and its people is revealed in inspection of the dizzying intricacy decorating the collection’s dresses, each fashioned to communicate the extended history of its wearer and their community through the craft of detailed embroidery. The museum also hosts temporary exhibits; during our visit the intricate pixel-like geometry of Jordanian designers Nisreen and Nermeen Abu Dail of Naqsh Collective greeted visitors from the courtyard, with a more extensive display within.

Arini is the physical outpost of the Arabic online architecture and design site, Herskhazeen, and one of the more important institutions focused upon the promotion, dialogue, and investigation of contemporary design and architecture in the Middle East. Visitors are bound to discover an ever-changing landscape of immersive installations like Dalieh – the Kinetic Canopy [shown above], alongside operating as a nexus of the city’s creative class.

WHERE TO SHOP
Photo: Gregory Han
When we slipped into Turbo for a breather during Amman Design Week, we weren’t quite sure what to make of the former abandoned car repair shop outfitted by graphic designers Saeed Abu-Jaber and Mothanna Hussein. Was it a graphic design studio? A coffee bar? A gallery? A pop-up shop? The answer is simply, “yes” (and also the answer to whether you should drop in). Their multidisciplinary studio is most easily spotted by their bright yellow espresso machine and an iconic tiger sculpture.
Photo: Kama
After spending an afternoon sampling Kama’s selection of gourmet local olives, oils, spices, nuts, chocolates, and snacks – each packaged in elegant contemporary Arabic geometric motifs – our evening was spent valiantly attempting to find extra room in our luggage to bring back home an assortment of gifts. Kama’s delicious design is a choice opportunity to bring back a taste of Jordan (or enjoy some in your hotel room, as I might be guilty of).
Photo: Shams Amman
Home décor, flowers and plants, food, and even a weekly yoga class all intersect at Shams Amman and their adjoining Al Balad Café. I discovered the shop after looking for the intricate and colorful art of Mo Rusan, whose arabesque prints would not look one bit out of place in a William Morris catalog.

Jordan River Foundation has two outposts – one inside the city and another within the Queen Alia International Airport, conveniently located just before the security gates at the departure lounge. Both represent the non-profit efforts of Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, each designed to spotlight a vibrant catalog of modern home décor and accessories handmade using traditional embroidery and woodworking techniques. Proceeds go to funding training programs to empower local women and children, making it destination for conscious consumerism.

FINAL WORDS
Upon arrival, Amman can seem like an overwhelming tangle of sights, sounds, smells, and textures. But by carefully pre-populating a Google Map with sights to visit, that seemingly impenetrable mass reveals a very walkable city. Download the rideshare app, Careem, and connecting those dots on your to-do list becomes even easier.

Amman Design Week is only in its second year of existence, but what it lacks in history it makes up for in its immersive breadth, exploring design beyond the esthetic and deep into the realm of relevant social, cultural, and environmental issues. Examples include ‘Kutleh’ by Rula Yaghmour (left) a “carved” seat made with scraps from the stone industry and construction projects, and ‘Left of Passage, Right of Passage’ (right), an installation by Anmahian Winton Architects, inspired by Wadi Rum, the geological Jordanian wilderness immortalized by T E Lawrence as “vast, echoing and godlike”. A visit scheduled during this celebratory span presents Amman at its most festive and finest from an arts and design perspective.

DAY 06th: IN UDAIPUR

Beyond this is Haldighati Pass, a narrow defile almost a kilometre in length, running south to northeast and finally ending in a broad plain. An interesting geographical feature of the pass is its soft yellow soil, which when crumbled resembles the turmeric (haldi), which gives the place its name. It was here that the famous Battle of Haldighati was fought on June 18, 1576 between Maharana PRATAP SINGH of Mewar and the Imperial army of Emperor Akbar of Delhi. The battle of Haldighati has gone down in the annals of Indian history as one which showcased the great valour of the Rajput troops led by their scion Rana Pratap. The result was indecisive, but the battle was truly symbolic of the raw courage, spirit of sacrifice, and loyalty of the Rajputs in their heroic defence of their motherland..
Nathdwara:Shrinathji’s idol was brought to Rajasthan from Govardhana near Vrindavan to protect it from the hands of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb who in 1665 was bent upon vandalizing the area of Vrindavan by widespread destruction of Hindu temples. When the Mughal army came to Govardhana, the devotees of the Lord showed them the titles and gifts given to the temple by the previous Mughal rulers. The army commander then ordered the deity to be taken away from Govardhana. For almost six months the statue stayed in Agra after which the custodians of the idol of Shrinathji left that place with the idol in search of a new heaven.

8.28.17 - 9.4.17
Short version: Lufthansa upgraded my seat but left my important suitcase in Frankfurt (mini heart attack). A random woman gave us a table dance at a bar but broke the overhead lights in the process. I’ve figured out the tram and metro system, but Czech people point, stare, and take pictures of my natural hair. And there are only two people in the screenwriting track so my professor might take us out to bars/cafes/pubs for class. So pretty much it’s been a week of highs and lows.
Long version: I'M LOVING IT SO FAR! I’ve met incredible people. An hour and a half into my flight I was asked by Katja, my German, surfing, flight attendant, to move from my seat (in Economy) to another (in Economy Premium). This was due to a language barrier between the man sitting next to me (he was being deported due to a failed visa application attempt) and the entire flight staff. This game of musical chairs allowed me to have a good conversation with six foot, German Gidget, and a Los Angeles sheriff onboard the flight. We discussed the complicated nature of international travel, visa applications, and catching waves. Katja, my Munich Barbie, wherever you are in Turkey, I hope the surf gods are being good to you.
Right as we landed, we were notified of a medical emergency on the flight which could possibly cause a delay at the gate. After the paramedics leisurely strolled on by (they had no sense of urgency...), some passengers and I rushed the door to make our connecting flights. I speed walked (a la the Macalister family in Home Alone) from gate Z to A, forgetting that I had to get my passport stamped since I was IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY!
Needless to say, I made it and I have 1 stamp in my passport to show for it. Sweaty and out of breath I waited at the gate, hoping to run into a CIEE-mate. And believe it or not, I did. Here is where I met Courtney, one of my flatmates, for the first time. She is a Golden Gopher, an incredible filmmaker, and resident picky eater. We bonded immediately over the fact that everyone around us was speaking German/Czech and that we both had medical emergencies on our respective flights!
Things started going downhill as soon as I bit into the weird cheese sandwich they gave us on our forty-minute flight. It was a sign. When we arrived at the baggage carousel, my pessimistic-self thought, “if anyone is going to get their bag lost, it’s me.” Courtney, a natural optimist, tried to lift my spirits, but as the number of bags dwindled down I realized I played myself.
The taxi driver appreciated my lack of luggage though! Everything fit snugly, especially me, Courtney, and Lawrence in the tight back seat. Lawrence is an adorable, little brother-like boy from Davidson. The three of us bonded over everything, from book-movie adaptions to the abundance of KFC’s in Praha.
Fast forward to the evening. I barely had to unpack, since I only had a carry-on full of shoes, and I felt absolutely gross. I gave myself a baby-wipe bath and went to dinner with my flatmates and some other film studies CIEE kids. I was stressed and anxious the entire meal, checking my phone every thirty seconds to see if the airport would call me about my bag (they gave me a pretty wide delivery window). I could not have been more rude and antisocial. Incredible first impression. Kristina, my lovely roommate/pixie cut queen, left the restaurant with me to wait for my bag. So while the other film kids bonded and went out to a bar, I slept, happy to know my bag made it safely to me. I would’ve died without my Shea Moisture by my side.
So after that night, I had to do something I absolutely HATE to do. I had to catch up. Thankfully, icebreakers hosted by sassy Olga, our fearless CIEE queen, helped me out. Everyone seemed pretty awesome. We discussed general rules, the culture shock we would experience, and learned random tidbits of information about each other. Then we walked around the city with our Czech buddies. They pointed out the tourist traps, good currency exchange locations, and that those tasty donut ice cream wraps are NOT real Czech cuisine (sorry Kelli)! A handful of us climbed to the top of Powder Tower (not easy) and took in the beautiful city from above.
That Wednesday night, I lost Austin for the first time and experienced quite the culture shock. The CIEE students on Chorvatska went to a cafe to meet with Jana (our red-haired CIEE gem), Olga, and the Architecture girls. A couple minutes before leaving, Austin had to go to the bathroom. I kept an eye out for him and saw him stop inside to talk to our resident Harvard boy, Tristan. I assumed Tristan told Austin that everyone was leaving, but I assumed incorrectly. The CIEE crew made our way out and I looked around for my buddy. Halfway down the block, I alerted the group, BUT NO ONE STOPPED. They all made a face like “dang that sucks” and KEPT WALKING. Suddenly we were on the tram and I turned to Austin’s sadboi roommate Rafi to tell him that we left his roomie behind. We shared a nervous laugh and simultaneously wondered what we could do since we both didn’t have wifi/data/cellular connection. The tram pulled away.
But the whole Austin situation couldn’t distract me from the Czech tram goers that kept staring at me. See, I had decided to wear my hair down. Yes, it was a little big and poofy, but my curls were defined and I thought I looked great. That was until the older woman next to me started whispering to her friend and pulled out her cell phone. She took a photo of me. I felt my stomach drop. I looked around for a friendly face, but I still had some socializing to catch up on and I had lost my only friend in a random cafe.
Thursday was a blur. We visited the CIEE study center (it was BEAUTIFUL) and had an extremely in depth, and LONG tour of the city. We hit the tourist traps, with a very detailed guide, even telling us that windows were smeared with pig bladders... I don’t remember the context of the conversation or if the information was necessary to our understanding of Prague as a whole, but I just remember it happening. After the tour, the CIEE crew collectively cradled their sore feet and napped for a solid 3 hours. Then came my first bar night.
After getting turned away from two establishments, due to the number of people in our group, we found a nautical themed place that was willing to offer shelter to a brigade of rowdy, American college students. And that’s when the random table dancer arrived. It was unexpected, unwelcome, and ultimately... unsettling. However she was very flexible and talented, but the majority of us were worried about her safety. She would fearlessly flip and do impressive backbends, but she was obviously HIGH OUT OF HER MIND. She even left her purse behind, visibly upset that no one had tipped her. She returned for an encore performance (mostly as a thank you) when Bara, my magnificent and chill Czech-mate, brought the lost belonging to her attention. And that’s when she cleared our beers off of the table, kicked shot glasses on the floor, and got tangled in the overhead lights.
Friday we had our first Czech class! We struggled but Ludek, our very intimidating but lovable professor, was very patient. We had semi conversations, unable to make the proper sounds or move our mouths, teeth, and tongue like native Czechs. In short, it’s not an easy language. It’s definitely up there with Chinese, Hungarian, Finnish, and English.
Then we ate lunch at a nearby pub/cafe/restaurant establishment. It was filling, meat-filled, and heavy, like every Czech meal I’ve had so far. We dragged ourselves back to Vinohrady and napped during the afternoon rain. For some reason, rain is just more beautiful and relaxing in Europe... What’s their secret?
Then I binge-watched GoT, successfully extracted myself from my computer to socialize upstairs and get a free home-cooked meal from the boys of apartment 6, and then returned to binge-watching GoT. It was a night meant for staying in.
Saturday was a big, wake up bright and early, day. The group took a train to Karlstejn, a castle in a more rural region of Prague. It was BREATHTAKING. It was old, ancient, and oozing with history. I got closer to Alia, a cool, indie LA music girl, and drank mead for the first and last time (are we sure it wasn’t straight cough syrup?). We got a workout trekking up and down the hill but gained back all those calories with our five-course meal at lunch.
And that night... we partied.
We pre-gamed, I tried some Czech beverage our Czech buddy couldn’t translate to English (it tasted like raspberries) and played some games. It was very laid back. Then we all migrated outside since it was quiet hours (which start at 10 pm?!) and took roomie pics by the tram stop. We made it to a bar, drank some more, played more games, and then walked to a club. Our adorable Czech buddy, Jakub, served as our fearless leader, successfully navigating us through Prague at night. Then we all stopped to take a group picture on a beautiful bridge, illuminated by the dainty, twinkling street lamps.
The club was completely my type of place. It had portraits of famous artists (Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, etc.) on the wall and there was a big screen at the front of the dance floor playing music videos. When we walked in Green Day’s American Idiot was playing. It was a perfect moment. The DJ’s taste varied, which led to some jarring transitions and dance moves that didn’t fit in certain genres. Song choices ranged from "Hit the Road Jack” to "Wonderwall” to "Sweet Home Alabama.” Once people started spilling their beer on me, it was time to go. So my roommates, Lawrence, and I left and went to KFC. When we got back at 3 am, I passed out.
Sunday was very lazy. The roomies and I went to the grocery store to get stuff to make smoothies (they were delicious). That night the film girls made a gourmet meal (maple salmon, steamed broccoli, rice, and pineapple salsa). It was the most healthy, light, and refreshing thing we’d eaten all week. We bonded, cleaned, and then I binge-watched more GoT.
The next day we had Czech class, academic advising, and a tour of FAMU. In class, Ludek taught us how to ask for directions and then directed us all to venture outside, into the REAL WORLD, to ask REAL LIFE Czech people for directions. He warned us that people might grab us and lead us to the location but, due to the language barrier (and our limited knowledge of Czech), we would be unprepared/unable to tell them that this was just for a school assignment. Most people ignored us, others we were just too scared to approach. When it was my turn, I asked a teenage girl, who was very nice, where the nearest metro station was. She replied sweetly and then watched as I walked away, completely ignoring her instructions.
Then came academic advising. Mary (an NU alum!), our advisor and professor, talked to me and Austin (the only 2 people on the screenwriting track) about the core classes we were taking. So basically our feature screenwriting class is just going to be me, Austin, and our professor. How amazing (and crazy!) is that?! She told us that we might have class meetings in pubs or cafes due to the small class size.
We then had a tour of FAMU and the rest of the crazy kids got advised. During that time, Austin and I ventured into Old Town, enjoying the sites at a slow pace. I was told by my roommates that even though Austin and I are only two people, the room felt “significantly empty.”
Well, that’s it for the first week! My posts will DEFINITELY be shorter than this in the weeks to come, and I’ll have more free time to actually post stuff more frequently. Stay classy. Ahoj!
