Various things none of which deserve their own post.

1. This short drama drops today and I can’t wait! Honestly short dramas are where it’s at lately:

Speaking of short dramas, I finished Lovesickess and Rise from the Ashes - the former was a gender swapped Ancient Love Song with a happy ending (tho not as good) and I truly truly enjoyed it - it would have made a great proper drama circa 2010. Our protag accidentally time travels to the past and meets and falls in love with the powerful 28 year old Duke who seems to know her. When things end as badly as they can, she attempts to travel back to save him but now she meets 21 year old him and when that ends, her last attempt is to meet him for a small bit of time when he’s 7. (She has no control of where in the timeline it ends up.) Unlike ALS, they do give them a happy ending, despite the gloriously emo line from his tomb letter to the effect of “I was running towards loving you and you were running towards losing me” (paraphrase.)

Ashes was total insanity in the best way, like The Double on speed, where our FL after being murdered by her husband in conjunction with her half sister, transmigrates to her younger self and sets out to revenge. She’s ably assisted by the ML who has his own grudges against the bad guys and who the OTP decide pass as her uncle - and all the other characters buy it. One of the most deliciously demented parts of this drama is that for a large chunk of it various characters believe an uncle and niece are having an affair (because the OTP ain’t subtle) and either try to use that to bring them down or, like FL’s slimy father and husband, go “oh well, it would be more scandal if this came out, gonna ignore.”

Between all the stuff in these two dramas, if they were regular dramas, censors would probably spontaneously combust.

3. Dashing Youth continues to be great. There are all those hijinks but they have a seriously seriously dark undertone - like the scene where BDJ’s master dies and he loses it and BDJ’s doting grandpa comments matter of factly to the dad that now the kid has seen the true face of jianghu - it’s not chivalry or friendship or glamor but this (death and loss.)

4. Olympics are coming which means slim pickings for dramas for a few weeks. Not being much of a sports fan, I am just happy I have a long reading backlog.

Huan Zhu Ge Ge (还珠格格), explained

Vox, don’t sue me for using this title.

Background: the other night, I suddenly had the OST stuck in my head. And I amaze my self by able to somehow sing the entire soundtrack?

Anyways, for those who either grew up in mainland China in the 90s or part the Chinese diaspora, Huan Zhu Ge Ge, princess returning pearl, was probably the OG idol historical. It’s adapted from a Qiong Yao novel. Huge hit across Asia. Influenced a whole generation.

Background plot — Xiao Yan Zi is a street orphan who met a girl named Zi Wei. Zi Wei turned out to be the daughter of Qian Long. Xiao Yan Zi accidentally gets mistaken as Zi Wei, takes on the title of princess, and hijinks ensues.

Perky, spunky, not super smart academically, and with a heart of gold. You know that female lead in idol cdramas these days? Xiao Yan Zi was the prototype. But also, she’s hilarious about Chinese proverbs.

This is Zi Wei

The prototype Ruby Lin character. I found Zi Wei rather corny when I was 7, TBH. Angsty back story involving being the unknown illegitimate daughter of the emperor, and then later getting whumped/tortured repeatedly by the empress.

This is the 5th Prince, Yong Qi

The emperor’s favorite son. The guy you thought would be the next emperor until you read anything about history. Smart and earnest. Xiao Yan Zi’s love interest.

(My first ever OTP!)

This is Fu Er Kang

Qian Long’s bodyguard. Zi Wei’s love interest. Done with Xiao Yan Zi and Yong Qi’s nonsense since episode 3 of season 1. He and Zi Wei had a lot of angsty moments that 7 years old me definitely was not into.

This is Jin Suo (on the right)

Zi Wei’s maid and BFF. Doubter of Xiao Yan Zi’s antics. Honestly not sure what personality she has other than “Fan Bing Bing is really pretty!”

This is Qian Long

Huang Ah Ma! The drama is Qian Long’s best publicist. Somehow manage to perv on women and threaten to off his kids, and is jovial enough that you spend your childhood going “what a loving father!”

This is Ling Fei

Yes, the same Ling Fei as Wei Yingluo from Yanxi. Super nice and motherly. The reason why my brain could not compute Ruyi for the longest time.

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.

A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.

We Need to Talk about My Uncanny Destiny

My latest obsession in the cdrama world! It's a gem!

Summary: Ye Zhaonan, a woman, has been raised as a man to lead Muxi City. Through an accident, she loses her memory and starts to work as a palace maid for Liu Xuanming, the lord of the Xuanyue City. Xuanming HATES Zhaonan (because reasons...). But since he believes that Zhaonan is a man he has no idea that she is actually working for him. And to make things even more complicated, Zhaonan is tricked into thinking that Xuanming killed her family, and she has to kill him to avenge them. Oh, and there's an assassin who was hired to kill her, but he gets captured by Xuanming's younger sister.

These 4 together are so funny. They are hired to kill Xuanming but they bungle it each time, so they get her in on it. With her memory gone, Zhaonan has no idea that these men are lying to her and believes them to be her brothers and father, so she goes along with their strange and hilarious antics and all the while contributing her own crazy stunts into the mix.

Come for the comedy...and stay for

The Chemistry

I have a new favorite CP and it's these two. She is a tomboy with knowledge of how to run a city and he's a pretty boy with a mission of... you know what? Watch the show and learn what he wants to do. Her wild and crazy ideas turn his straight-forward brain into a puddle of mush of love. He goes bananas for her.

But they're not the only ones with Chemistry:

Princess Yunluo and her assassin boyfriend Tan Yang. The boy is out to kill Zhaonan, but falls for Yunluo who is a character herself. She tortures him then falls in love with him (love is weird like that). Tan Yang is a bit broody but it's that sexy kind of broodiness because he's got the hots for a cute princess and carries a sword.

And What else to love about this show?

>Its pacing is 100% perfect. I haven't been bored since I started watching, even during the slow scenes. >The whole drama is beautiful: costumes, actors, and the settings. >All the characters are fun. Even the evil ones, even the side characters, even the old nurse, even the oiled up general! >The story is easy enough to predict but has the tendency to throw curveballs at you. I love that! >Each episode has a title screen that's cleverly been added in the show scene.

Please watch it! You will love it. This is my new Qing Qing Zi Jin. And if you have read enough of my stuff, you know how obsessed I was with that show.
